Race to the End of the Earth Feature Presentation

Race to the End of the Earth

May 16 7:30 – 9 pm IMAX Theatre $30 per person. 10% member discount. Tickets available online or at the RBCM box office.

The race is on! In 1911, two Antarctic-bound explorers, the Englishman Robert Falcon Scott and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen, led teams through harrowing conditions against a ticking clock. Who would reach the pole first? And when they got there, could either make it back home? This new exhibition recounts one of the most stirring tales of exploration – the dramatic contest to reach the South Pole.

Join Dr Ross MacPhee, curator of Race to The End of the Earth, American Museum of Natural History, as he recounts a gripping tale of Antarctic adventure and tragedy, going beyond the exhibition. Dr MacPhee will sign copies of his book, Race to The End, at the conclusion of his lecture. Exhibition preview follows the presentation.

A Gentleman Naturalist Carolyn Webber Archives Technician, BC Archives May 1 The British gentleman James Edward Hepburn made important contributions to the understanding of BC’s natural history, yet he is arguably the least known, and least recognized of the province’s early naturalists. Drawing on previously published work, as well as new material from the BC Archives, from Hepburn’s own notebooks and from his relatives in Scotland, this talk will highlight the background, character, interactions and activities of this remarkable scientist.
