Project Update: HVAC Project—3N On May 16, 2010 the winds were calm and Vancouver Island Helicopters (VIH) were able to lift the HVAC equipment on to the roof. If you missed it, it was a spectacular sight to see….. this picture is courtesy of VIH.

The HVAC equipment, is now being installed and connected. Start up and commissioning of the equipment will begin early this fall.

Many have been wondering what that big very hole on the east side of the building is for…. we are constructing a new concrete emergency generator room for our new emergency generators.

The fuel tank for the generators has now been installed and they’ve started on installation of the mechanical piping. The concrete work is nearly finished; installation of new railings is out for tender on BC Bid; planning is underway to relocate plants from the native plant garden to the concrete new planters and the transplanting will begin in

( CON ’ T ) What else is new and other “Stuff”: The picnic area has been shifted around to open up an area in the middle of the area to accommodate programming (summer kids camp).

Visitors and staff are still welcome to use it. Now that the sunshine has arrived, many more folks are venturing outside to enjoy it. The planters are also starting to come alive now that they are getting some sun.

New carpet tiles have been installed in CCH, the temporary gallery and Newcombe Hall. Some of the carpet was taken away and recycled by the installer and the useable carpet from NCH will be donated by the installer to some charitable organizations.

Painting, painting and more painting—it is a never ending!

The red benches are being repainted, the pergola at the front the entrance has been redone in black, more wooden doors are being refinished.

Have you had a chance to try one of the new Dyson Airblades yet? If not, you should check it out—it really does dry your hands in just 12 seconds. In addition to the ones we’ve installed in the Exhibitions building, we’ve now installed one in the 2nd floor washroom in the Fannin building.

Sustainability says…. we participated in Earth Hour again this year. We kept off all non-essential lighting off for the entire night.

Install a ceiling fan. A fan uses one-tenth of the energy of an air-conditioner.

•

Don’t run a clothes dryer during a hot day—try hanging it! If do need to run your dryer, do so in the early morning or late at night.

The BC Government’s 2009 Carbon Neutral Action Reports are now Live under www.livesmartbc.ca These reports highlight the thousands of activities and actions government organizations are taking. Our report is there but you can also find it on our sustainability page at http:// www.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/ About_RBCM/ sustainability.aspx In June we received notification from BC Hydro, our Power Smart Partner, that we achieved our Power Smart targets! We have pledged once gain to do our part to save energy and commit to continuing a consistent path towards sustainability. Don’t forget, you too can join Team Power Smart (and best of all it’s free to sign up-and just a few keyboard clicks away!) http://www.bchydro.com Now that summer has arrived (let’s hope!), here are some BC Hydro’s tips on how to conserve in this hot weather (which is also on their website): •

Turn off all unnecessary lights. Take advantage of our longer and brighter days,

Limit the amount of heat from entering your home or office by shading your windows. Using blinds and drapes can block up to 65% of the heat that would come through the windows.

Tip of the day….. the best way to save money when it

comes to water use is simply to reduce the amount of water you use!

Did you know that our Corporate Catering Partner, Truffles Catering was the winner of the Climate Change Category, Capital Regional District Eco Star Awards 2010? In 2009, Truffles kitchen reduced their landfill waste quantities by 95%. Their left over event food that is safe is donated to “Our Place”.

DID YOU KNOW ?

An Earthquake Strikes—what do you do?

Duck, Cover, and Hold: take cover under a desk/table and away from windows or potential falling items—protect your head and neck, and count to 60 after the tremor stops. Turn off electrical appliances and water. Only evacuate after the tremor stops, and after being directed to do so, or if the fire bells are sounding.

As with all evacuations, do not use the elevators. Check for people in your area and that they are safe, and report all injured people to your floor warden when clear of the building at the muster area.
