Spring Break Camps: Focus On Nature Aspiring shutterbugs can develop their skills by participating in a photographyinspired camp. Each week-long session will include a visit from a winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Campers will learn about photo composition and storytelling, venture to Beacon Hill Park to capture dynamic nature shots and explore the Royal BC Museum’s Natural History collection.

DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES Predator and Prey: The Art of Chauvet Over 36,000 years ago our ancestors painted and engraved images of their lives onto the rocky surfaces of their natural environment. Some of the best examples of this rock art can be found in southern France, at the Chauvet Caves. Join Dr Jean-Michel Geneste, Chief of Scientific Studies of the Lascaux and Chauvet Caves in France, for an in-depth presentation on some of the finest examples of these remarkable works of early art.

Gold Rush Film Festival Two BC filmmakers screen their documentary films on Gold Rush era topics with contemporary perspectives. Following each film there will be a forum with the director/producer.

Eva Wunderman Canyon War: The Untold Story Canyon War uncovers the tumultuous events of 1858 in British Columbia, a previously untold story of a war swept under the carpet for 150 years.

It was the days of the Fraser River Gold Rush, which saw some 30,000–40,000 thousand gold seekers flood into the Fraser Valley, culminating in the Canyon War in August of that year. (53 minutes, 2009) September 18 I 7 – 9 pm 10

Karin Lee Cedar and Bamboo; Small Pleasures; Little Heaven and Earth Cedar and Bamboo explores the relationship between Chinese immigrants and indigenous peoples through the stories of four people of Chinese and Aboriginal ancestry.

(22 minutes, 2010) Small Pleasures follows three women from different worlds in 1880’s Barkerville as they try to convey complex ideas about feminist resistance to each other through a common language: Chinook Jargon.

Little Heaven and Earth (Ats ságh-il-lie pee il-lá-hie) investigates the great fire of 1868 that reportedly burnt down the entire town of Barkerville, but the Chinese community had a different version of events. Thanks to the antics of two young kids, Chinatown is saved from the devastation of the fire which destroyed most of Barkerville.

An Evening with James Daschuk Join James Daschuk for a discussion of his book, Clearing the Plains, which examines the roles that Old World diseases, climate, and, most disturbingly, Canadian politics – the politics of ethnocide – played in the deaths and subjugation of thousands of aboriginal people in the realization of Sir John A. Macdonald’s ‘National Dream.’ It was a dream that came at great expense: the present disparity in health and economic well-being between First Nations and non-Native populations, and the lingering racism and misunderstanding that permeates the national consciousness to this day.

ocean every time one needs to study a deep water clam is neither feasible nor efficient – hence the value of visiting a museum collection.

Prior to his visit, Dr Kamenev was in the process of studying a group of clams inhabiting the deep waters of the Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, Kuril-Kamchatka and Aleutian Trenches. Surprisingly, he discovered a number of species remarkably similar to those living in the Northeast Pacific. By comparing his findings to specimens within the Royal BC Museum’s Invertebrate Collection, he expects to learn whether these species are either the same or unique.

Regardless of the result, each would tell an interesting story about deep-sea fauna across the vast North Pacific: either certain species are more connected than previously thought, or these species, if unique, have changed relatively little since divergence.

Such visits to our natural history collections are not rare. In addition to the thousands of specimens sent out as loans each year, more than 100 researchers from around the world travel to Victoria to use the Royal BC Museum’s collections and ultimately, to answer important scientific questions, ranging from traditional taxonomy and systematics to biodiversity, species at risk, invasive species and climate change.

It is always a pleasure to host visiting researchers. Our collections benefit tremendously from the shared expertise and knowledge, and as researchers, we broaden our own scope and understanding. But perhaps more importantly, this is what the collections are for – to share, to study, and ultimately, to learn more about the natural world.

Lest We Forget: Remembrance Commemorations

Lest We Forget: A Musical Tribute to The Great War

Look for free performancebased presentations by musicians, singers and storytellers, outreach school programs on November 10 & 11 in Clifford Carl Hall.

Join the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy for a musical tribute commemorating The Great War. The diverse musical program includes video footage from the First World War. This performance is part of the Victoria Symphony’s “Lest We Forget” concert series.

Victoria Children’s Choir The Victoria Children’s Choir will perform music on themes of war and peace. The awardwinning Victoria Children’s Choir, founded by Artistic Director Madeleine Humer, comprises over 70 talented singers aged 8 – 17, and are known for their performances of wide-ranging repertoire both around Victoria and on tour.

Story Theatre Company

Christmas in Old Town

The Story Theatre Company and the Royal BC Museum have teamed up to present a very personal vision of the young men and women who served on the front line. This dramatic storytelling event is drawn from actual letters and reports of those who were there. Music, poetry and news clips of the time are woven into the personal stories to give an overall vision of the times and the people who lived in them.

Carol-Along with the Carillon Bring your family, friends and pooch and gather under the Centennial Carillon. Provincial Carillonneur Rosemary Laing will climb the 75 stairs to the top of the carillon where she commands the 62 bells. The crowd down below, led by the Newcombe Singers, sings along.

Hot chocolate and cookies help to make the season bright and at the end of the 45 minute set, the Carillion is lit for the holidays. A unique event.

Helmcken House Old-Fashioned Christmas Step through the doors of the oldest house in British Columbia still on its original site, and experience what Christmas would have been like in Victoria over 100 years ago. Decorations, music and first-hand accounts will take you back to Christmas past.

Researching “Stewards of the People’s Forests” Presented by Dr Bob Griffin and Dr Lorne Hammond The creation of the British Columbia Forest Branch in 1912 marked the start of more than a century of service by the many staff who served as stewards of BC’s forests. Road to Ruin: James Douglas and the Obfuscation of the Cariboo Wagon Road Presented by Frank Leonard, Ph.D. This presentation explores the finance, construction and early operation of the Cariboo Wagon Road. By reviewing Governor James Douglas’s dispatches to London, and the private comments that officials attached to them, Dr Leonard reaches a conclusion which challenges the traditional, celebratory view of Douglas’ government of the mainland colony.

An Artist of Rare Ability: The Life and Photographs of C.S. Bailey

Presented by Jean Barman Drawing from her prizewinning French Canadians, Furs, and Indigenous Women in the Making of the Pacific Northwest, Jean Barman will explore French Canadians’ contributions to Fort Victoria, explain their relationships with indigenous women, and argue for their critical role in the establishment of British Columbia.

This will be a special meeting offered jointly by the Friends of the BC Archives and The Association Historique francophone de Victoria.

Presented by David Mattison C.S. Bailey was the first Vancouver photographer to specialize in landscape and marine photography. Every year between 1888 and 1892 he documented the city’s growth from different vantage points, making him the eyes of the city. Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age Millions of years ago, giants roamed the earth.

Often standing more than 14 feet tall, mammoths and mastodons towered over the lands of Europe, Asia and North America, including British Columbia, from as long ago as 1.8 million years in the past to as recently as 10,000 years ago, during the Ice Age. In 2016, the Royal BC Museum will present the rare opportunity to see the larger-than-life exhibition Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age.
