Opinion

here are a lot of things I think about. I mostly think about life, about the future and what the it holds in store for me. This is actually something that is very hard to think about.

I never know if I am going to be able to do the things that I plan and want to do.

It’s hard to face the world with my condition. A lot of kids I knew who also had this condition have passed away. Most of them were younger than me.

My family and I are so happy that I am still going strong. I make the best of my situation as much as I can but it really is a hard thing to live with.

I try to not show how scared and upset I am sometimes. I am happy mostly, but not always.

I go to the hospital a lot. It’s hard when I get into the hospital during school and I miss a lot of things and I come back not knowing what is going on.

I get very behind and have a hard time catching up.

Last school year during spring break I got sick. Spring break ended and I wasn’t able to go back to school.

I got into the hospital, I had… a blood infection.

It was a very hard time for me and my family. None of us knew if I would get out of the hospital. My little sister was not allowed to see me and I was upset because I didn’t know if I would ever see her again.

Thankfully I did get better but like I said it was a really hard time.

I guess it would be easier if I could forget about all of this once in a while but in a way that’s just not possible.

I am who I am.

I am happy with my life.

I have a great family who loves me just the way I am. I know that they are always there for me.

It’s the outside world which I am always hesitant to approach. I never know how people will react to me.

Most of the time people will stare at me and if I try to approach them they seem very uncomfortable.

Also, people just assume things about my condition without knowing what it is. I don’t understand why they won’t just come up and ask instead of acting like I have the plague or something.

Others are very accepting and welcome me and make me feel like part of the group. It helps when people treat me like a normal person but at the same time if I need help they don’t mind helping.

The Royal Banner has not had an advice column for a couple years. This year I am bringing it back.

I will be your “Ask Anna”. Come to me with all your troubles and I will try to help you solve them.

Nicki Minaj’s new song, “Anaconda,” has its place.

That place is not at a school dance.

I attended the Back-to-School dance for the first time in late August. I loved

it and am disappointed this is the only year I’ve ever gone.

The D.J. was incredibly skilled, but I found the message the music conveyed, especially to girls – many of whom were freshmen – to be inappropriate.

Many of the songs sexualized and ob-

jectified the female body. Additionally, the songs generally promoted drugs and alcohol.

“Some of the music was a little vulgar and a little out-there with the messages,” said freshman Ingrid Cooper, “I heard a lot of sexual messages.”

5 This choice of music at a school dance is irresponsible and sends mixed messages to girls and boys in their first week of high school.

Classes, such as Health, focus on addressing drug and alcohol abuse, among other issues, so it seems illogical to have music that promotes drugs and alcohol at a school dance.

For example, “Now where my alcoholics/ Let me see yo hands/ up” (from LMFAO’s “Shots”) blaring at a dance on the first full day of high school gives the underlying (if not blatant) impression that drugs and alcohol are an expected part of high school culture. How exactly is that helping address the problem of substance abuse?

What is “Their [women’s] panties hit/ the ground every time/ I give them shots” (LMFAO’s “Shots”) teaching to a second-day freshman girl? That a girl’s body is not her own?

These messages translate into disrespect towards girls.

I understand that people like to grind. Cool, good for you. But it is 100% inappropriate for a guy to come up behind a girl and just start grinding with her.

Guys, you MUST ask permission, because you are not entitled to a girl’s body. It is her body.

Guys, if you don’t understand what it feels like to be made into a sexual object and to not ‘own’ your body, imagine if every one of those songs were talking about men. Imagine being bought for a ‘shot’.

Songs like this send the message to boys that girls can be bought and that girls are there for men’s pleasure. This is a deeply dysfunctional message. Why are we not reacting?

“With the songs in general, it definitely, when you’re singing about it, it affects how you’re seeing things and how you’re thinking about things,” said Leeburg.

“They have a powerful impact on people.”

Dances are wonderful and fun, but the music needs to be regulated.

“We have asked for the students to guide us, and have the students come up with a task force and discuss with us ways in which to address safety… and model appropriate behavior at the dances,” said Vice Principal Rose Lupinacci, “I think that was incredibly successful.”

The administration could create a strict policy on music at dances. But this may not be the best way to address the issue.

“Using students to help would be better,” said Leeburg, “because that would still keep the atmosphere fun and not have people feel like they’re being told what to do or what to listen to or censored by the adults.”

Club Spotlights

Need to find a way to get more involved? Not sure where to start? Many students aren’t aware that there are over 40 clubs at Fairview that they can easily be a part of.

Clubs vary from atheltic to educational, some raising money for larger organizations while others are soley based in Fairview.

The Royal Banner reached out to five clubs, all of which have been founded in the past several years by Fairview students. Clubs are still welcoming members, as it is early in the year, so get involved while you can!

Teens for Oceans

By Alli Williams @allijoyw Teens for Oceans focuses on ocean conservation and raising awareness of harmful activities that affect oceans’ ecosystems. This year, the members are emphasizing the importance of reducing plastic waste.

“We’re going to sell reusable water bottles that say ‘Teens for Oceans’ on them,” said Sierra Asmussen, president of the club.

“We’re going to try to raise money to get a water bottle re-filler station installed in the school that tells you how many water bottles you’ve saved.”

The club plans to travel internationally so they can tag turtles, participate in coral reef preservation, and become scuba diving certified.

The club meets on Wednesdays during block lunch, in room 811.

Taekwondo

By Rachel Grushan @rachelgrushanrb Taekwondo Club is a new club this year lead by juniors Daniel Kim, Andrew and Chris Choi, as well as senior Youngji Kim. The club will be held in the cafeteria after school for an hour on Mondays and Wednesdays.

“We’ve been doing [taekwondo] for a lot of years now,” said Daniel Kim. “We wanted to share it with the Fairview community.”

Students do not need a background in martial arts or any experience with taekwondo in order to participate.

“We’re gonna start small… It’s fun just learning and teaching,” said Chris Choi.

The club will be held in the cafeteria after school for an hour on Mondays and Wednesdays.

UNICEF Club

By Izzy Zuniga @izzy_zuniga Created last year by Angela Fei and Anjing Fu, UNICEF Club helps fundraise for the national organization.

“UNICEF’s goal is to diminish suffering and really help these children, like gain access to education, food, clean water, shelter, etc.” said Fei, co-president.

Last year, the club participated in the Tap Water Project, where all the proceeds went to getting clean tap water for children around the world.

“Fun fact: a dollar can provide 40 days of clean water for a child in need,” said Fei. This year the club plans to raise awareness about issues not commonly known, such as human trafficking.

“It’s such an undermined issue really,” said Fei. UNICEF Club holds their meetings every Wednesday after school in room 628.

By Izzy Zuniga @izzy_zuniga The goal of Fairview Lead to Change, previously known as Women Lead to Change, is to create positive social change in the world.

“It’s important to join if you have motivation to try to make a difference,” said Maya Dayan, the club president.

Fairview Lead for Change is entirely run by its members. The club campaigns, or projects, work with an outside organization to raise funds or awareness.

“We’re doing movie nights this year which will be so much fun,” said Dayan.

The club meets during CAT Wednesday in room 659.

Phyte Club

By Alli Williams @allijoyw Despite its often misinterpreted name, Phyte Club is all about gardening and collecting organic food that the members grow.

“It’s a bunch of friends eating and gardening,” said Emma Beck, co-president of the Phyte Club.

Many students aren’t aware that the school has a greenhouse and a garden.

“I think it’s really important to have people here with us for the developing,” said Julia Jenak, the co-president.

This year, members are interested in expanding the garden and even adding some trees. They grow organic food in the garden and the greenhouse for eating, selling, donating to the homeless shelter. Phyte Club meets after school on Fridays in room 411, or in the greenhouse.

How Athletes Get Their Game On

@harrisonyoung6 f you’re an athlete, you probably have some sort of ritual you consistently do before each game. However weird, crazy, or nutty it may be, you still do it. Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one who does it. Everyone has their pre game routine, but athletes do different things throughout different sports.

9 All of you guys probably think that soccer players just throw their uniforms on, and call it good.

Starting junior defender Jesse Andringa told me otherwise. “Before each game, we group up and get dressed. We watch highlights from a professional game for visualization,” Andringa said. He followed up, saying, “Once we finish with film, we go over our game tactics.”

Andringa also said how the whole team huddles up, and talks about the game plan, along with chanting Knights as they run onto the field.

Football, as you may have heard, has some wild rituals and traditions. Especially starting senior linebacker Luke Miller. “I have earned the nickname ‘Pukie’ because I puke before every game,” said Miller “And it rhymes with my name.” When asked about how the nickname came about, he said, “It started ever since I was little. I try not to, but I just can’t help it.”

game ritual that we do after we win is we sing our fight song as we pass our field goal post at Fairview. It’s so much fun,” said Miller. “I have noticed that some kids put their jersey on their shoulder pads before the put their shoulder pads on. I think that’s a pretty smart idea.”

The volleyball girls have different rituals all together. “Before we play, we all scream ‘yasssssss’ because it pumps us up,” said junior Cree Lawrence. “On the way to away games for team bonding we always sing, and then we walk into ‘Bring em Out’ at home games.”

Lawrence mentioned a funny pre-game ritual a fellow teammate does, saying, “Bailey MacInnis always does high kicks before each game.” When asked if there was anything else the team loved or did consistently, Lawrence said, “Most of the team loves Noodles and Co.” Whether it’s puking, singing, or watching highlights, clubs and sports at Fairview do what they need to do to win.

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” to “A Most Wanted Man,” Summer 2014 housed an extensive number of bookto-movie adaptations. “The Fault in Our Stars” and “The Giver” proved the most anticipated novels in film form, but the real question is, did these movies live up to their highly renowned novels?

The novel, “The Fault in Our Stars,” won over the hearts of thousands of teenage girls all over the country since John Green authored it in 2012.

“I thought ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ was a very good read because it tears up readers’ heartstrings into smithereens,” said sophomore Caelyn Kinderman. “Also, because it was very intellectual and beautiful.”

Similarly, “The Giver”

caught people’s attention with its fascinating story, containing a dystopian setting and meaningful truths.

Sophomore Ben Nielsen said, “I really liked ‘The Giver’ because it made you take a second and think about what you were reading.”

The complex and heartbreaking relationship of Hazel Lancaster and Augustus Waters, illustrated in John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars,” is both painful and profound in the way the young couple strives for a normal, healthy life in the face of overwhelming uncertainty paired with almost certain death.

Sophomore Audrey Cheng thought differently than most about the novel and the movie, “Honestly, it was gross and cheesy.”

Of course, many readers loved both the story and the movie no matter their age. Junior Lauren Adler said, “‘The Fault in Our Stars’ [film adaptation] was very deep, and it matched the book very well.”

Another summer box office hit, “The Giver,” began as a novel that captivated readers with its deep meaning and mind-blowing text although people were disappointed with the evident discrepancies in the film version.

“They made the movie to attract viewers rather than follow the best and real part of the story.”

The truth is that it is hard for a movie to outlive the greatness and beauty that comes out of a beloved written novel.

The Giver, The Fault in Our Stars, and many other cherished novels are remembered not because of their film counterparts, but because of the captivating themes and deep connections that they made with their readers, themes that rise above special effects and celebrity casting drama drenched over magazines in the supermarket checkout aisles.

reshman Anthony Savely stumbled into the student center last Tuesday after four weeks surviving against all odds in the 300 hallway and was immediately placed into intensive care.

“I wandered around looking for Room 367, but became totally lost,” Savely said after he had recovered, “It was like a maze!”

The freshman, who was initially marked as absent during 3rd period of freshman orientation, was unable to locate the room and forced to live by himself for four weeks, eating scraps from the catering classroom.

Questions still remain about how he survived in such desperate conditions.
