With Fairview High School’s 2012-2013 academic year in full swing, it is evident to returning students how this school has transformed. New teachers fill the classrooms. Fresh student leaders inspire the student body. Hallways are more cramped than usual, and there are numerous physical modifications to the building. These aspects contribute to Fairview’s identity, differentiating this school year from all the previous ones. On teaching: I teach Pre-IB LA 9 and College Prep LA 9. Origin: Huntington, West Virginia. On Fairview: I love Fairview, specifically for the I.B. program and the high standards set by both faculty and students. It’s amazing to have so much support from the community, and the students themselves.

What do you hope to bring to the school? My passion, my knowledge, and my desire to make our world a better place.

My students have been calling me “Mrs. Hunt” and that’s fine with me. As a new teacher at Fairview, I suppose I would want my students to use whatever is standard.

Once I have my Ph.D., I may try to think of a cool nickname. Similar to Dr. Z, maybe I could just become Dr. H? Or maybe Dr. Angie?

Interesting fact? My mother was Mrs. America in 1984, and my family was invited to the White House to meet Ronald Reagan. During the photo shoot, I wouldn’t stop picking my nose, so now we have this lovely, signed picture of my family with President Reagan, and my finger is halfway up my nose. I was three, but really, is that an excuse? Hobbies? Creative writing, reading, playing piano, all forms of dance, and the equestrian sports of eventing and dressage.

I’m a polyglot, I’m an Anglophile...I am obsessed with Downton Abbey and Sherlock! I was such a yearbook nerd. My old teachers remember me running around everywhere with my camera. Mysterious Quotes Appear on Walls This year positive, motivational quotes have been placed on the walls all around Fairview. Inspired by this year’s Knight Crew Commissioners, Lead Commander Merritt Lealman decided to start the project to help clean up the school and bring people up if they are having a bad day.

“Looking and staying positive in an environment that is so stressful,” said Lealman, “is a main reason why the quote project began.”

More quotes have already been ordered for the walls to inspire students everywhere in the school. “Life without music would be ‘flat’” and “Give yourself back to the world each day” are some examples of the quotes that will cheer people up.

The quotes are not placed at random around school, but instead in very strategic places. They are placed by subject with the 600 hall being the easiest to find quotes because you can take inspirational quotes throughout history.

Along with the quotes, Lealman and Principal Don Stensrud organized bulletin boards around the school in hopes of making the school look more clean and polished.

“If we want to change the culture of what our school looks like, we have to start with the leaders of our students and staff,” said Lealman.

“So far, the cleanup seems to be working quite well. I’m very excited that kids have respected them,” said Lealman.

Lealman is already excited about the changes happening throughout Fairview and believes that this years changes are just the start to making Fairview a cleaner and better place.

“Through actions we can make change,” said Lealman.

Fairview Athletic Department and District Invest in New Gym Floors After 17 years with the same main gym floor, the Fairview athletic department, with help from the district, invested in a new floor for the athletes.

The old floor warped due to water damage from a leaky roof and after various attempts to fix the problem the best solution was to install a new floor.

According to Athletic Director Frank Lee, it took only one day to remove the old floor and two weeks for the new wood to cure and get used to the Colorado climate.

“It took them probably two or three weeks to lay the floor, paint the floor, and then to seal the floor,” said Lee. The process of installing the floor was much quicker than expected.

“It was pretty remarkable,” said Lee. The new gym floor cost roughly $80,000 compared to the expected cost of $150,000$200,00, according to Lee. “With the help of the district, and the help of the district athletic director, we were able to buy it,” said Lee. “The Fairview athletic department was excited about the inexpensive cost for the floor, especially after participating in an auction for CU’s old gym floor but failing to purchase it because the auction price became too high,” said Lee about how Fairview finally got a new floor.

Lee said that during the installation of the gym floor there were relatively few problems.

New Head Boy and Head Girl Lead the Student Body Kate Cuddington

Kate Cuddington, Fairview’s new head girl, expressed her feelings about being a student leader this year: “We have such a great group of kids at Fairview and I am honored to be part of it!”

On Homecoming, Cuddington said “We are really ramping up for the big dance on September 22nd.

The theme is going to be Mardi Gras! I am really excited about this theme because the decorations are going to be like a night on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. We are going to have lots of beads and music and everyone should wear a colorful mask.”

Cuddington said that she hopes to bring the school together and get everyone excited about Fairview High School. She has positive sentiments about this upcoming year. “I’m looking forward to an amazing year with all of you.”

“There are a few glitches in the paint, like rough spots,” said Lee. The main floor design was originally going to be a knight placed in the center of the court and similar to the knight painted on the gym wall.

Instead Fairview’s athletic department opted for a more simple layout with crossing swords.

“It has more bounce to it and its more of a true floor than we had before,” said Lee. Frank Lee and the Fairview Athletic Department plan to keep this as the floor in the main gym for 70 years to come. In the near future, the Fairview Athletic Department plans to add holes for an additional volleyball net in the main floor along with major changes such as new bleachers.

Bridger Tomlin

“Fall 2012: the start of a new school year. Freshmen beginning to grasp the realities of high school, sophomores thinking they already know it all, juniors realizing they’re in for a long hall of hardships, and seniors enjoying their last glory days.” This is how Head Boy Bridger Tomlin described the start of this academic year.

Tomlin said, “As Head Boy this year, I hope that all students enjoy this year and take every opportunity to experience all of the great things that are at our fingertips here at Fairview.” He continued to say, “While high school should be a time about living in the moment, it should also be a place where, as young adults, we set goals and try to achieve those goals.”

He added, “I urge you all to utilize Fairview and push yourselves to do something impressive, whether throwing the winning touchdown of the football game, doing well in a history test, making a breathtaking painting, or representing Fairview and yourself in some other way.”

“On my honor, I have never given nor received unauthorized assistance as described in the Academic Honesty Code on this work and I have fully acknowledged the work and ideas of others.”

This year, posters bearing this Academic Honesty Pledge have been posted in every classroom.

Darren Bessett, head of the IB program at Fairview, spoke of the growing trend at Fairview High School to try and reduce the cheating culture we have at this school. These posters are a part of this trend.

Besset said, “A few years ago, former students from National Honor Society came to me. They told me how tired they were of being asked by their peers if they could copy their homework.”

This statement kicked off a schoolwide program to try and lessen the incidents of cheating.

IB teamed up with NHS in an effort to develop an academic honesty culture. As part of this effort, the academic honesty code was added to the planner, and teachers began using turnitin.com.

Bessett said, “We are under no illusions that cheating occurs on a daily basis. We know we didn’t solve the problem, but the posters were another step of this effort.”

Start Taking gay relationships seriously

I am in a relationship with a girl. And you know what? We’re not dating to be hot. We’re not dating so guys will find us sexy. And we are not-- I repeat, not-- ever letting any guys be a part of our relationship. Do you get what I’m saying?

I’m not being stuck up here. I promise. Guys ask to be a part of our relationship more often than you would expect. For some reason, a lot of people don’t understand the meaning of a lesbian relationship. It is a relationship between two women. Not two women and some lucky guy. So please stop objectifying us. We are in a serious, committed relationship. We’re dating because we love each other.

As junior Molly Marcus said, “Yes I am, and no you can’t watch.” This basically sums it all up. Gay relationships, like all other relationships, are for the people in them. They are not for the benefit of others. “My bisexuality is for my sex life, not yours,” said junior Esme Rodehaver.

A gay relationship is just as meaningful as a straight relationship. Many people don’t think that way. If someone does not consider a gay relationship to be a legitimate relationship, how are they supposed to consider a gay marriage to be a legitimate marriage?

Just as relationships are not there for the enjoyment of others, people who are not in a relationship have no right to try to control that relationship. Julian Bond, an American social activist, once said, “If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t get gay married.”

It’s that simple. It’s not like making gay marriage legal would mean everyone had to marry someone of the same gender. It would only mean that those who wanted to could.

It doesn’t really matter, in the end, if you think that gay marriage is right or wrong. What everyone has to understand is that it’s really none of their business who someone else dates or marries. Marriage is a right that should belong to everyone, not just people who happen to fit into the current social norm.

Seriously. Think about it. What we need to change, in the end, is more than just some stupid laws that take away the rights of a minority. We need to change our mentality. Just because someone is different from you, in any way, from lifestyle to sexuality, it doesn’t mean that their choices, decisions, and preferences are any less legitimate and valuable than yours.

Freshman Friday Gets Out of Hand

Freshmen Friday; A day meant to celebrate seniors’ authority while publicly enforcing the role that every freshman plays in high school. Upperclassmen must uphold certain responsibilities involving how appropriate their planned practical jokes and events are for the day. In many cases, when Freshmen Friday is over, students of the junior and senior grades are left with warnings about their behavior that day. However, this year the punishments for minor discrepancies were much too harsh.

In an interview with senior, Sebastian Harvey, he said that for carrying an empty can of silly string he was threatened with daily detention for a month. This was rightfully taken back. Most likely the school recognized how ridiculous of a punishment they had made up for simply having silly string.

Could anything be more harmless?

Jeff Colburn, senior, unfortunately suffered the original consequences of his actions. He says, “I had to get searched for all things used to mess with freshmen and then mop the student center and go clean it all up.” This punishment is justified in some ways because Jeff contributed to the mess in the student center. However, several other students participated in the destruction as well but weren’t forced to clean the floors.

The consequences of this year’s’ Freshmen Friday were harsh and inconsistent. It seemed that some people were punished and others were conveniently ignored. In the future, a more structured system should be put in place to reprimand students who have done wrong. All of the consequences will be respected as long as they are fair and reasonable.

This year’s Freshman Friday ended in catastrophe. The seniors parked along the road instead of the senior parking lot as they usually do on this day. But this year the juniors, outraged that they did not get to park in the spaces they felt entitled to, vandalized the senior’s cars with condiments, water balloons, feminine products, even car keys causing permanent damage.

While parking in the streets instead of their personal lot does affect the juniors and sophomores more than the freshmen on Freshman Friday, what the juniors did was a gross overreaction that crossed the thin line betwixt tomfoolery and vandalism.

“We’ve taken it for the past four years” said senior Delaney Romyn, who says her car was assaulted with ketchup, water balloons, and tampons. She says that the juniors had no justification for retaliating against the tradition that happens every year.

Seniors feel they deserve to park in the streets once a year on a very Friday as a reward for dealing with it for three years. “They’re going to do the exact same thing when they are seniors” said senior Jamison Howe, one of the many seniors who said the juniors should not be able to do the prank next year as a punishment for their actions this year.

There is a valid concern of what will happen to this tradition of preventing other grades from parking near the school in the years to come. Some seniors, like Howe, fear that the juniors will “inspire” future classes to retaliate against the seniors, and possibly in a manner that is just as destructive.

This is one of the few forms of mischief that the seniors are still able to do, all forms of hazing are against the rules, and the administration discourages senior pranks with the threat of not wearing a cap and gown with everyone else during graduation. The juniors’ actions this year may be the beginning of the end for yet another Fairview tradition.

Every Friday on the first full week of school, the Seniors exercise their newfound superiority over the Freshmen, more formally known as “Freshman Friday.” However, this year the real controversy occurred between the Junior and Senior classes.

It is more than fair to say that within the unexpected battle of Junior vs. Seniors, the Junior class received the short end of the stick.

Juniors were upset and annoyed upon arriving to school on August 24 and discovering that their normal parking spaces along Greenbriar were occupied

by Senior vehicles.

Finding a parking spot was nearly impossible and many Juniors had to park on side streets as far as a ten minutes away, sparking the first conflict of the day.

News flash; the 14 and 15 year old Freshman class cannot drive cars!

“On Freshman Friday I arrived at school at the time i normally do, 7:40. When i got there I saw that everyone was purposefully being obnoxious by parking their cars so some cars even took up two spots per car on both Greenbriar and Gillespie,” said Emma Ward, Junior.

“By the time I finally found a parking spot on one of the neighborhood streets I was already so late for first period,” said Ward.

However the war between seniors and juniors did not stop there. Several unidentified Juniors retaliated, admittedly taking things a step too far and messing with the Senior’s cars.

“They keyed them and put hot sauce on multiple cars,” said Jeff, Fairview High School security guard, who dealt with the days drama.

“It created an uncomfortable tift between the two classes as kids started pointing fingers saying, ‘you did it,’ ‘no you did it.’ Since it’s an ongoing investigation people shouldn’t be accusatory,” said .

As Jeff mentioned, when cars were messed with accusations began flying toward specific juniors. These accusations were untrue, underserved and unfair.

“I got blamed for squirting hot sauce and putting tampons and ketchup on the Senior’s cars which isn’t true,” said Junior Sophie Crespi.

The bottom line is that this year's “Freshman Friday” was full of drama and controversy with wrongdoings on both sides. It is evident that the Senior class shouldn’t have been so relentless about parking or place all the blame on certain innocent Juniors. However, all Juniors and Seniors can do now is leave this in the past and that hope it will not define the relationship between the two classes in the upcoming year.

Top 3 Reasons to go 1. Homecoming is one of the biggest events of the year and even though it costs money, it’s worth it!

2. It’s an opportunity to ask that special someone sitting behind you in class that you’ve been eyeing for weeks 3. No matter your relationship status; single and ready to mingle, in a committed relationship, in progress, undetermined, or even long distance, going to homecoming will be worth your time

2. Girls, don’t wear heels at the dance, they will stab you (Harrison Burns) 3. Don’t arrive to the dance on time, be fashionably late 4. Don’t dance with others if you go with someone specifically clarified as a date, but if you’re going “just as friends” talk it over before hand so there is no miscommunication.

6. Bust out those mardi gras beads and rock the shiny colors!

According to Mr. Billington, head of the student council, Principal Don Strensrud approved the use of masks. “We are actually providing masks with tickets,” said Billington.

Wearing masked is not allowed on Halloween, so why now?

Masks were banned in schools due to the fact that they hide the face from being recognizable. The masks given to students “are not covering the full face,” Billington said.

7. Support the football team by attending the homecoming game 8. Use the restroom before you start dancing. It’s not fun having to stop dancing when you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of dance (Forrest Freeman) 9. Try to avoid parent transportation. If it’s the only option then don’t sweat it, but if you can book a limo or party bus it’ll be a more exciting way to go

What’s going to Happen at Homecoming?

10. Remember to be respectful and polite by asking before dancing with someone, this applies to everyone; boys and girls.

You walk into the student center. The flashing lights illuminate the beads around your neck. You feel heat radiating from the crowd. The blasting music fills your ears and the beat pounds in your heart. For weeks you’ve been anticipating this day and the reality of it happening brings a smile to your soon to be sweaty face. You see colors. Look at your date, then back to the crowd.

Look down, look back, look at your feet. You are now dancing.

Frozen Yogurt Wars

The Aspen Leaf at Table Mesa shopping center is the most superior place for Fairview High School students to get yogurt for many reasons.

The first reason is the proximity to Fairview. While visiting Aspen Leaf during block lunch, Fairview students of all ages were able to get the delicious treats. Those who can’t drive can take a short bus ride and those who can drive can get there in less than 5 minutes.

Another reason to go to Aspen Leaf is the punch cards. If you order 10 frozen yogurts and get your punch card punched, then you get a free frozen yogurt! Who doesn’t like free things?

Entertainment-wise, this place has everything. It has a TV that hangs near the window so you can comfortably watch Cartoon Network. Popular music is playing in the background, loud enough to be heard but quiet enough so you can actually talk to the people you came with.

The best reason to go to Aspen Leaf is the 20 percent off discount for Fairview students on Thursdays. All you need is to show your ID to the cashier and your $5.00 purchase becomes $4.

Abandon all other Frozen Yogurt dispensaries, Aspen Leaf is the best choice for you!

Variety and flavor are two things to think about when choosing a Frozen Yogurt shop. Red Mango, located in the Flatirons shopping center has not only Frozen Yogurt, but also smoothies, yogurt parfaits, frozen lemonades, and frozen coffee chillers.

The stores logo, a red mango, symbolizes mangoes turning red only when they are perfectly ripe. At this point the mango tastes best.

This logo is a symbol of the shops best and all-natural ingredients.

After opening in 2007, the store was rated number one Frozen Yogurt and Smoothie shop in 2011, according to Red Mango’s website, www.redmangousa.com.

The atmosphere is calm and modern with a cozy feel, however, it does not have very many places to sit inside. Red Mango’s slew of flavor combinations creates endless opportunities for the frozen yogurt buyer who wants a new experience each time. The chain has 45 flavors of frozen yogurt to ensure this diverse experience. According to their website, eating their frozen yogurt, which is full of probiotics, can result in better digestive health and a strengthened immune system.

Similar to most other frozen yogurt stores Red Mango is a self serve frozen yogurt store and the cost is measured by weight. The average cost for a small cup is around $6 at $0.45 per ounce, according to www.redmangousa.com.

If you are looking for a variety of frozen and cold treats, try Red Mango for endless award winning frozen yogurt flavors full of probiotics as well as fruit filled, delectable smoothies. this store may be farther than other but the amount of flavors and the diversity in the flavors beats out Aspen Leaf, Ripple, Boom, and Spooners all together!

Ripple’s atmosphere is fun and upbeat with a modern decor and a bright pink and purple color theme throughout the store. It is difficult to go to Ripple and not see someone you know there as well.

Not only does it have the traditional toppings such as cereal, candy, and warm toppings but Ripple also features fresh, warm baked goods to savor with your froyo!

Crosswalk Kids Generate Indie-acoustic Hype

An up-and-coming new band has joined the pantheon of Fairview Student groups. The Crosswalk Kids, as they call themselves, are bringing a distinctive indieacoustic sound to their fans via covers of well-known artists along with original material.

Luke Schneider and Cole Scheifele, seniors, had been playing together for a couple of years prior to the group’s formation, but The Crosswalk Kids didn’t really come together as a band until Charlie Bowers and Nico Schweiger, also seniors, began jamming with them. The four then decided officially to form the group, with Scheifele and Schneider on guitar and vocals, and Bowers and Schweiger on keyboards and percussion respectively.

“Luke and I came up with the name of the band. We write a lot of lyrics about childhood and the different cross roads and paths you take in life,” said Scheifele.

The band’s music definitely reflects this nostalgic angle, with songs like the Fray’s “How to Save a Life” and their own “Southern Coast Escape” weaving melancholy tapestries through the jangling blend of guitars and the gentle thump of Schweiger’s Cajon, a wooden percussion instrument.

Scheifele described the band as having an acoustic-oriented indie-rock sound, with echoes of John Bonham and the Milk Carton Kids (whose name Scheifele was careful to point out was not actually the inspiration for their own group’s moniker). In keeping the acoustic influences on the group, the two guitarists usually play acoustic, and Schweiger often plays the cajon.

For the most part, the members of the band learned their instruments on their own time. “I have only taken two piano lessons,” said Bowers, “and now I usually learn songs by ear or by seeing videos of other people playing the songs.” Their ability to lock in together after only a few short months as a group belies a strong musical sensibility in the band’s members. Scheifele mentioned that the band has only really played together 3 or 4 times.

The highly acclaimed boy band already has a huge following on their Facebook fan page as well as upward of 900 views for the videos they have posted on Youtube. The fan page was originally constructed by Schneider, who intended to use it exclusively between band members until it eventually attracted scores of fans.

As the hype around the new musical group picks up, many fans have been curious as to whether or not the foursome plans to make a public appearance in some sort of concert setting. According to Schweiger, the rumors of an engagement at the Fairview High School annual barbeque taking place on September 19th are true.

Even though the band has already caught the attention of many Fariview-ites, they intend to keep their audience entertained by incorporating more exotic instruments and potentially pursuing an indie-folk-rock type of sound similar to Mumford and Sons.

As of now, the group rehearses in Schweiger’s basement but have already recorded their original piece, “All That I Can Get” in a professional studio. As for the future, they hope to write and record more of their songs as well as put on concerts on a more regular basis.

Fall Sports Preview

Football: The Fairview football team started off their season the week of August 27th. Having lost many seniors, the team is still hoping to have a successful season. “We want to win all of our non league games, and we would like to win our league and we would also like to win the state,” varsity coach Tom McCartney said.

Besides varsity, John Michael Thisle coaches JV and John Zadigian coaches freshmen team. “We really like to throw it this year,” McCartney said of his team this year.

Players to watch: Cole Scheifele, Victor Gallo, Anders Hill, Johnny Feauto, Sam Martin, Cameron Frazier, and Aaron MacArthur. The Varsity captains for the 2012-2013 year are seniors Cole Scheifele and Victor Gallo, and Junior Anders Hill, along with a fourth captain that is picked at each game during the season.

Volleyball: Volleyball lost many valuable graduating seniors last year which can sometimes lead to problems later in the season. According to Odette Edbrooke, assistant Varsity coach, this will not be a problem. There is “young talent on the team” and a “huge talent pool to pick from,” said Edbrooke.

Just like years past, the volleyball program consists of two Freshman teams, Sophomore, JV, and a Varsity team. Volleyball is the “highest cut sport in the school,” forcing the coaches to cut 30%-40% of the athletes every year. The Varsity team captains this year are seniors Paige Lindgren, Alex Flynn, and Tori Anderson. With only four returning players from last year’s squad, this year’s Varsity team lacks experience but is looking forward to a great season nonetheless with strong leadership and young talent.

Tennis: “We have a very deep, talented team this year,” Chad Tsuda, Fairview High School varsity tennis coach, said. The team looks to have a repeat of 2007, which was the last year Fairview won the 5A state tennis title.

“Impact players will be the whole team,” Tsuda said of the standout players for the upcoming season. Yet no matter what people say, the season will not be a cakewalk. “Everyone is still finding their game under pressure and we all need come together at the right time; in order to win we will need everyone,” says Tsuda.

Many tennis teams focus on technique over physique, and the FHS adjusted their plan this year by taking this into account and requiring every team member participate in league tennis as well as competitive tournaments.

This mix of preparation and experience will be essential during the long fall season.

Softball: Softball appears off to a better start this year with the help of their two leading players Teresa Prinster and Alicia Lanzoni. “To come together as a team and control what we can control” is one of their goals this year Prinster and Lanzoni said. Their other goal is to make it to the state playoffs at the end of the season.

Ryne Willis, Varsity head coach, took over the program just two years ago.

His main goal for this season is to change the culture and play more professionally. After a rough season last year, the Knights softball team hopes to

pick it up and win more games than last season. It is a “numbers game this year” Willis said, with a maximum of 15 on Varsity at one time.

Along with the more experienced players, Julia McQuie and Rachael Perley are some of the underclassmen standouts. The team is already off to a great start this year and hope to carry their winning-streak to playoffs at the end of the season.

Soccer: Varsity is led by head coach Stan Jozwiak, a coach for more than 33 years. Helping him is Dan Niedringhaus, the JV soccer coach and assistant varsity coach. Like all other coaches, they expect the Varsity squad to not only make the playoffs but to “go deep into the playoffs,” Niedringhaus said.

This year there are nine seniors on Varsity with two of the seniors, Jackson Wojciechowski and Eric Kronenberg, leading the team as captains.

“We are excited for the younger players potential and we are also happy about how our seniors have been leading,” said Niedringhaus. The team could improve on finishing their shots, playing solid, organized defense, and composure in the midfield, Niedringhaus said. Other than that, hopes are high for the team with the senior’s leadership and the underclassmen potential.

Poms: Fairview’s POMS team is known to impress the audience, whether it be students or teachers. This year the team is better than ever, with seniors Lindsay Barnes and Allie Vaughn leading the dance team.

Their main goals for the year include winning state and performing to the best of their ability. The captains and coaches are “very excited for the season.”

After football season ends, the team heads to Florida the first week of February to compete at Nationals. Every season consists of a couple additions to the team, with Alex (freshmen), Laura (freshmen), and Madelyn Patterson (Junior) joining the team this year.

Cross Country: Head boy and head girl Kate Cuddington and Bridger Tomlin are the captains of the FHS cross country team along with Margot Clyne and Kyle Lund. The team is excited for this season and with great leadership, they’ll be sure to win state. The goal for this season for the boys is to win state, says Tomlin and the goal for the girls is to get top ten in state. “To pull the team together and to have lots of team bonding time” is a collective goal of captains Tomlin and Cuddington. Some runners to keep your eyes on include Kyle Lund, Cory Munch, Bridger Tomlin , Rich Sanchez, Zach Swenson, Scotty Davis, Nate Gilbert, and Lily Stumb. It will be an interesting season with FHS fielding a great array of talent.

Ultimate Frisbee: The Ultimate Frisbee team this year has high expectations to live up to. In 2011, FHS Ultimate took state by storm with a first place title for co-ed and a 3rd place girl’s title. Ultimate prides itself on its inclusive environment for all. The team trains two hours, four days a week to prepare for the challenges they will face. After a successful 2011 season, Ultimate has no lack of confidence. They plan to win state this year.

Boys Golf: No matter the sport, Fairview athletics always holds to the highest standards. Golf is no exception. Last year, the FHS golf team finished well.

However, they were still disappointed with their performance at state, as they know they could do better.

This year they are looking to improve on last years performance. Boys golf this year has a very young, enthusiastic team. At the end of the season, only three seniors will graduate and the young players will lay the groundwork for a successful program in the years to come.

To anchor this team in the long season to come, they will look to brothers Matt and Jackson Vacek as well as Kevin Wolfarth for leadership.

With this combination of youth and experience, it will be a season to watch for FHS Mens Golf.

Sports Siblings: A note from Frank Lee

As the fall season for athletics is underway and the Knights prepare for the league schedule that awaits them, I would like to commend our teams for the work and effort they put in every day to try to reach their lofty goals. Fairview has seven fall sports: Cross Country, Football, Boy’s Golf, Boy’s Soccer, Softball, Boy’s Tennis, and Volleyball. I encourage our student body and staff to continue to support the athletes in the hallways and at our competitions. We have the best student body in the state and the support shown for our teams is second to none.

I would like to highlight two teams that have bonded to support each other’s efforts. Paige Lindgren is one of the captains for the volleyball team.

Jackson Wojciechowski is one of the captains for the soccer team. They have been friends for a long time and this year they brainstormed ideas in order to have their two teams become more supportive of each other. They decided to have a team dinner for the varsity volleyball and soccer teams. They wanted to pair off the members of each team and make them “siblings.” Their hope was that by doing this they would form groups that would lend support to each other during games and at school.

Due to the relationships built by years of competing together, Paige and Jackson had little problem pairing team members to form sibling groups.

Since volleyball has fewer varsity members than soccer, some of the groups are made up of two boys and one girl, but each member of the team belongs to a group.

The beginning of the dinner had feelings of a middle school dance as the boys and girls stayed somewhat separate. After dinner, a game was played that brought out the competitive juices in the athletes and eventually helped them bond with their siblings. Since that initial dinner, the two teams have felt a special spirit between them. They work together not only in supporting each other’s teams, but also in supporting each other academically. It makes the teams feel motivated to do the best they can knowing that each team has the back of the other. Although most of their games are played at the same time, they have tried to get to each other’s games when one finishes earlier than the other. They have made banners for each other and built a foundation that they hope will turn into a tradition.

Another effect of the sisters and brothers coming together is that the soccer and volleyball teams have grown closer not only with each other, but within their own teams. According to both Paige and Jackson, the teams are closer than they have been in the past and they look forward to their competitions more than in previous years.

The teams plan to continue having fun activities throughout the season. They plan to do something each weekend as a group, including scavenger hunts and study tables. Other teams have taken notice and in the spring, girls soccer and lacrosse hope to do something similar.

I again want to take his opportunity to wish our teams success this fall. We have a tremendous group of athletes representing our school in fall sports competitions. Continue to support them and know that the support you show is greatly appreciated. Paige and Jackson, the efforts you have made and continue to make are special. A leader tries to continually make the environment they are in better, and you have definitely done that at Fairview.
