Student leaders set to excel in the new year By LEO LEONG
By JENELLE WINTER
Starting from the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, I.T. (information technology) lifted the web filter from computers throughout Students now have access to the school thanks to the persistence of Fairview administrators. Facebook in the library According to assistant principal Sarah DiGiacomo, the program that (Whitcomb). consistently blocked what it considered to be inappropriate and unsafe websites was not benefiting anyone. “It was getting in the way,” DiGiacomo commented. “This was long overdue.” The Fairview staff pushed for the removal of this filter for educational purposes for quite some time, but I.T. did not listen until recently. Originally, the web filter proved to be a perfect way to keep students on track while they use school computers. However, as the program was blocking distractions such as YouTube and Facebook, it also restricted some sites directly related to a school subject, not allowing students full access to the information they required. Email accounts, such as Hotmail, Yahoo, and Comcast were also inconveniently blocked when a student needed to email work to his or her home computer. While most of these previously blocked sites may be a distraction, teachers are hoping for enough responsibility and respect from the students to do what they need to do. “We trust you guys,” said DiGiacomo. The new freedom of the computers comes with much responsibility. “Hopefully kids are aware of the social norms.” DiGiacomo said. The administration would expect that a student sitting on a computer updating his or her Facebook page would willingly let another student use it for school purposes. The web filter affects hand held devices differently. Almost every other student owns an object that has access to a 3G network. However, if the device is connecting through regular Wi-Fi, the web filter will still be active. The difference between 3G and Wi-Fi is that connecting through Wi-Fi is directly connecting to the school, while when using 3G, you are connecting outside of the school, mainly using celluar networks. Kids are on their personal devices constantly. Most do not need the school’s computers for unlimited access to internet. Fairview is currently the only school testing out the filter free internet. “I don’t know why other schools aren’t doing this,” DiGiacomo stated. She believes the teachers at Fairview are all for it. If Fairview does not report any serious problems with the new system, other schools may be more willing to try it. On all computers, some extremely school inappropriate sites will continue to be blocked.
Banner’s believe it or not By NELLIE QUINN
Armed with toy guns, two women attempted to rob a central Pennsylvania adult book store around one a.m. on Sept. 23. Unable to fool the store clerk, Shannon Cheripka and Angela Crook failed to rob the Adult World store located in Duncansville. The clerk chased the women out with a hammer, and soon after the authorities arrested them in a van the clerk described. The police held Cheripka and Crook in the Blair County Jail the next day on robbery and other charges.
Homecoming dance, prom, and sport games are some of the annual events that students at Fairview look forward to every year. Those occasions are often the highlight of the students’ school year. It’s hard to imagine how those events would turn out without student council. Every school year, student council members organize and plan school activities and oversee the rest of the student body. For the 2010-2011 school
year, Head Boy, Zach Strand, and Head Girl, Kate Travis will not only maintain excellence, but they make sure the entire student body is represented and being heard. One of the new programs that student council is planning this year is Student Advocacy. “The student advocacy committee will consist of several senate members on student council and the goal is to keep track of student issues,” said Travis.
