n March 12, the 2019/2020 school year ended abruptly when we received an email telling us that we would not be returning to the building.

Our community has suffered so much loss since that point: loss of loved ones, of jobs, of the opportunity to say goodbye to friends, of prom and graduation.

COVID-19 uprooted every plan we had for the remaining two months of school.

But the virus also brought along resilience: students finding new ways to connect from afar, people volunteering and essential workers fighting on the front lines, teachers and administrations adjusting their curriculums and grading systems, the community finding new ways to celebrate our graduating seniors.

The year has come to a close, and for some students, so has their entire high school careers. Though it was not punctuated by its usual ceremonies, we wish this year’s seniors good luck on the next chapter of their lives.

Congratulations; you made it!

This school year was like nothing the world has seen before. COVID-19 may have changed everything, but we are learning to get through it together (in our own homes, of course). We hope you are safe and well, and have an excellent summer.

CELEBRATION AMONGST ADVERSITY Senior celebration amid Coronavirus restrictions AVA SVOLOS // CO EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

hen the school doors closed on March 12th, the class of 2020 was not aware that it was their last day walking around the crowded, uneven halls of Fairview.

The second semester of senior year is by far the most exciting one, with college decision announcements, spirit week, prom and graduation. When it was obvious that would be taken away due to the rise in coronavirus cases in Colorado and across the world, students and administrators alike decided to attempt to rectify the situation by creating safe ways to keep up with some traditions.

Senior Molly Wyss asked her fellow classmates to send in videos saying where they were going after high school to have a virtual commitment day, a day where students would traditionally wear merchandise to school on May 1st. In the video, some students wore their merch and said their school’s motto. The video can be found at: https://bit.ly/3b0ELH0

“Ever since freshman year, I've always looked forward to commitment day, on May 1st, and I think it's a really cool way to show you've gone through all this work all these four years and then you finally get to this next chapter in your life,” said Wyss. “I think it would be very cool to kind of still have a piece of that, even though we're not really at school right now.”

The video does not solely feature students who are committing to college. Students who are taking a gap year or are traveling submitted videos as well. Wyss completed the video on May 1st, which would have been the day of celebration if school was in session. However, this deadline also came with complications.

“It's a little hard because some colleges have pushed back their commitment days because of all of this, but even if it's just an idea, it doesn't have to be totally final and you don't have to have, obviously, your merch to be in the video,” said Wyss.

Additionally, the counselors were active

on the google classroom page for the Class of 2020. They provided information about virtual college visits, deposit deadlines and scholarships.

“It would have been really nice to come back and see people, especially our seniors, I think that it feels like such an unfinished closure, and it's really sad,” said counselor Ashley Houston. “I just love the last couple weeks of school where the seniors are sort of in that excitement mode.”

Administrators passed out graduation celebration lawn signs to every senior on April 30th and May 1st, to honor the seniors who lost most of the ceremonies of the final semester of school.

"Embrace plan B" Teachers also put together a video giving well wishes and advice to seniors, things they would have said in person if they had a chance. The video can be found here: https://bit.ly/2xw4lpq “We wanted to do something to show how much we love you guys and how much, no matter if we're together or not that, ‘hey you know what, like we've been thinking of you this entire time,’ and while Amy and I are maybe quote on quote leading the charge, everybody wanted to do something,” said Spanish teacher Rikki Keiser.

Keiser had some words of advice to seniors about making the best of this unusual time.

“Embrace Plan B,” she said. “Because obviously this isn't anything that any of us planned to do, this wasn't our plan A through Z, but just embrace it, learn from it, enjoy it.”

O

h, the college search. It is one of the most exciting, stressful and confusing decisions of a person’s life. The best way to learn more about the process is to get tips and advice from counselors and seniors!

The Fairview counseling department said that “the college application process for the class of 2021 will be unlike any we have seen before with many colleges now waiving test scores and having less concern for 2nd-semester junior year grades and activities.”

“It starts with just coming up with some ‘musts’” Counselor Todd Eagles said, “in my opinion, I really think it starts with just coming up with some ‘musts’ you want in a school that is individualized based on your personality and interests.”

Going to a college that you’re interested in, and that has what you need, is important.

Eagles said, “just because the name of the school is popular, does not make it a fit for you to be happy and have an amazing college experience.”

“Trust the process [...] and start early!”

This is an important message because even though many colleges are known as the “best,” it doesn’t mean it’s the right fit.

“The most important thing is not to give in to what other people think is right for you,” she said. “It’s going to be a crazy time, so trust the process, that you will find a college that fits you, and start early!”

It is easy to procrastinate when it comes to such a stressful process like studying for testing and applying to colleges. A key piece of advice from many seniors and counselors is to avoid putting things off and to get a head start.

How many schools should you apply to? Counselor Ashley Houston said, “Some students apply to one or two schools because they know they are likely to get in and know they want to go there. Other students who are applying to selective schools apply to more schools to increase their odds.”

The average amount of schools that students apply to is 3-7, but it varies from person to person, as it depends on what they are looking for.

Margot Jessen-Hegelbach kept her advice short, sweet, and concise.

“Utilize your resources” She said to “utilize your resources, plan ahead in order to stay on top of deadlines, and remember that college is what YOU make it!”

Admissions in the era of COVID

he college admissions process can be daunting at any time, but it is especially so in the face of a pandemic. Nationwide, colleges have adjusted their processes in order to face the difficulties of the coronavirus, which have included the loss of college visits.

“When the pandemic hit Colorado, university staff began working remotely in the middle of the campus’s annual visitation season,” said Clark Brigger, Colorado University’s Executive Director of Admissions.

To combat this, CU has created new ways to interact with its campus online. It is not alone in doing so, and most colleges’ virtual tours are available on their websites.

The majority of colleges, including CU, have also agreed to accept this year’s modified AP exams as viable scores. They are also prepared to deal with the ways that high schools have decided to adapt to the pandemic individually, such as pass/fail grades.

“We already complete multiple holistic reviews of every student application we receive and take many factors into consideration when it comes to a student’s academic profile,” said Brigger. “So, we will train our staff to take the information that is provided to us and make their best assessment of every transcript given the context of the situation and the high school.”

One group of students that has been particularly affected by the pandemic in regards to admissions is student athletes.

The cancellation of spring sports, including tournaments that could’ve been recruitment opportunities, has been devastating.

CU’s Athletics spokesman, Josh Lindenstein, noted the other ways that student athletes will be able to connect with college coaches.

“Within NCAA rules, our coaches are still able to contact recruits remotely, watch films and otherwise interact in the ways they normally would outside of in-person

visits,” said Lindenstein. “So prospective student-athletes still have many avenues for interacting with coaches during the recruiting process.”

“We will train our staff to take the information that is provided to us and make their best assessment of every transcript given the context of the situation and the high school.”

COVID-19 has shifted many of the processes for admissions, and colleges — like the rest of the world — are creating new solutions in this unprecedented time.

ADAPTING TO ONLINE Redefining education with remote learning KRISTEN SHENG // STAFF REPORTER

VSD has adjusted all schools to online learning through the end of the 2019-2020 school year. This has forced multiple teachers to modify curriculums in order to fit the new guidelines. Some are finding it easier than others.

“Considering I own a dumb phone and have never used websites for teaching, besides a few apps,” said Edgardo Parada, who this year is teaching Spanish 2, 3 and PIB 3, “I have been learning a lot.”

Many teachers, such as Dan Albritton, who teaches IB Chemistry 1 and IB/AP Chemistry 2, are experiencing the same thing: struggling with the internet, posting assignments, and interacting with their students.

Susan Stensrud is working on keeping spirits high in her Government/Geography, AP US History, and Anthropology classes.

“I like having class competitions so I came up with the Raffle. I try to throw in a quote of the day, trivia of the day [and] interesting videos,” said Stensrud.

Teachers are also learning how to create a balanced workload with the limited time

for classes whilst being online.

“As an instructor, I have tried to find a balance between a daily routine that does not take too much time and yet still continues the students' learning,” said Albritton. “Everyone has many issues to deal with during these challenging times, so I hope my classes are useful but manageable.”

“I was hoping to have online classes more often, but I have found that they are not as productive as I'd like,” said Stensrud.

IB and AP classes have been trying to adjust so that students are prepared for the exams in May. Although IB has canceled all its exams, AP has modified their tests to be shorter and online.

“Since IB canceled their exams, the focus in our second year course has shifted to preparing for the AP Chemistry Exam,” said Albritton.

Similarly, Stensrud said, “AP [is] mostly impacted by the change in the exam — and to my chagrin they selected the portion of the test that I like the least — the DBQ. It is good practice for writing an essay but provides an awkward and overly specific rubric for grading.”

With all music concerts and shows being canceled, music instructors have been trying to find ways to still learn and

perform music.

“We've had to figure out how to get part tracks to all students, how to create part tracks, how to find people that can help us put it all together since we do not own the equipment,” said Janice Vlachos, who teaches choir. “It's extremely difficult to try and make it all work.”

In the end, teachers are doing what they can to get the most out of school being moved online.

“I think that most students miss being in a classroom with their friends, hanging out during off periods, playing sports and all of the other things that go on during an average school day. Teachers, I know, miss seeing their students every day as well,” said Jim Lewis, who teaches IB 11 LA. “Everyone, from admin, to parents, to students, has been really supportive throughout this whole process.”

ocal businesses are struggling to stay alive, and don’t know what life will look like after the pandemic.

Sage Wirth, owner of local business Liberty Puzzles said, “When Governor Polis shut down the state, we had to send all our employees home. And so, we had to turn off the website, […] we stopped the orders from coming in, but we also sent all our employees home, so that left the owners to fill over a thousand orders, which we had to make and ship.”

Coronavirus caught many businesses by surprise, leaving very few employees to do the job of many.

“It left us with about five people doing seventy-five people's jobs,” said Wirth.

Liberty Puzzles is finding new ways to adjust by trying to sell already made puzzles that weren’t needed for previous orders.

And so, it was sort of like a spiderweb, and now, the shelves are empty.”

For many of these local businesses, the future is unclear, and trying to plan ahead has been extremely difficult.

“We were trying to really really grow this year, and make more puzzles, take on more employees, sort of double our manufacturing capacity, and we're not gonna be able to do that anymore,” said Wirth.

Similarly, local business owner, Dr. Clinton Kay, is working hard to keep his vet clinic, the South Boulder Animal Hospital, open through hard times.

“We have limited our hours for appointments and have rotating days of just one team (1 doctor/1 technician/1 customer care rep), we are only accepting curbside check ins whereby only pets are allowed in the clinic, not clients. We then either call

or video chat the client from inside,” said Dr. Kay. Even with the clinic working hard, future plans are up in the air, and Dr. Kay knows there is still a lot of hard work ahead.

“I do think we will survive but it is going to be challenging to build up our cash reserves again, pay off the debt we are accumulating, and get our staff back to work, which will depend on the financial stability of pet owners in general to spend money on their animals,” said Dr. Kay. Although coronavirus has toppled plans and depleted the income of many, the Boulder community continues to have a positive outlook and work hard to rebuild

ART OF MASKING Students find creative ways to help out their community.

e’ve been stuck at home with a purpose at this point,” said senior Kendall Baldwin. “And if I can help out in any way, that just gives me more sanity in a way.”

On April 3rd, the Centers for Disease Protection and Control (CDC) recommended Americans wear face masks in an attempt to further contain the coronavirus in addition to social distancing measures that had been put in place.

“CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission,” said the CDC.

“CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings” On May 9th, Boulder County mandated that every person over the age of twelve is required to wear a face mask in public when social distancing cannot be maintained.

As most surgical-grade masks are reserved for people working in the health sector, Americans can now be seen wearing bandanas and homemade masks. Many

“The first [mask I made] was really rough but from then on I’ve gotten better with each one. One of my teachers actually ordered 10 from me and I was really pleased with how all of those turned out,” said Baldwin.

The efforts of Baldwin demonstrate the immense effect making the masks can have on individuals. “[My teacher] ordered [...] masks [online] the day after school was cancelled and she still hasn’t gotten them, but her son is now able to go to work again because of the ones I gave [her],” said Baldwin.

Currently, a shortage of masks and mask materials has hindered the efforts of many people hoping to follow CDC guidelines, forcing people to create their own solutions.

“The toughest for me is distributing them while maintaining social distancing,” said Baldwin. “And elastic actually is in high demand right now [...] so I’ve been trying to engineer ways to wear the masks without elastic.”

The Fairview Red Cross Club is also playing a part in donating masks to organizations and local businesses, who may rely on volunteer-supplied masks in order to re-open safely.

“Our goal would just be to make sure every organization that needs masks can get them,” said senior Mia Torrence. “And the [Denver Museum of Nature and Science] has a lot of people working for them and when they do open up, they will definitely need masks for all of their workers and they might not all have access to the materials

to make a mask or the opportunity to buy some.”

Individuals who did not have much prior experience in sewing made many masks, and learned the basics of creating them in order to contribute to their community.

“The way you make them is fairly easy, even if you’re not an expert sewer,” said senior Aparajita Kaphle. “I just found a template online that basically [said to] cut up any old fabric, but it has to be cotton I believe.”

Students are utilizing a variety of materials and designs in making masks, and although this is certainly not the second semester students envisioned, such efforts can have an impact.

“Making masks, you kind of realize [...] what the situation is.”

“It’s a little bit of a jarring realization to have, but it’s also very important that you’re doing it.”

YOUR QUESTIONS UNMASKED Why are we recommended to wear masks?

The CDC recommends people wear masks in public, and adhere to 6-foot social distancing protocol, in order to reduce the spread of coronavirus, but why can these masks be effective?

The virus spreads in various ways, including through droplets.

These droplets can be expelled when people sneeze, cough, or talk. When a person inhales these droplets through their nose or mouth, they can come into contact with the virus. Multiple studies have demonstrated that individuals that are asymptomatic or presymptomatic contribute to the spread of coronavirus, and the masks provide a barrier that can help inhibit the spread.

What is a good material to make masks?

Cotton seems to be an accessible, effective material to use for masks, and can be cut out of old sheets or t-shirts.

Do I need a sewing machine to make masks?

Sewing machines and hand-stitching can both be used to make masks.

KEEP CALM AND PASS IT ON

Instagram challenges and online positivity during the Coronavirus

F

or the past few months, if you’ve tapped through the stories in your Instagram feed, you’ve probably seen a handful of tags, challenges, and chains for anything from favorite utensils to self-love. In the challenges, someone posts a picture or message and tags their friends. Then, their friends follow along and tag

more people until the chain grows. While they may not be new, the challenges have become ubiquitous during quarantine.

“The main reason that I’ve been doing these challenges is that we all have nothing better to do,” said Syd Mei-Dan, a sophomore. “I can’t go out and see my friends, I can’t go to school, so I think the reason behind all of [the challenges] is that they’re just fun.”

Mei-Dan has participated in many different challenges, including challenges about spreading body positivity and Bill Clinton holding her favorite albums.

Many others also participate in challenges.

“I mostly have done ones that my friends tag me in, but one of the ones that stood out was about awareness of how we spend our time on social media,” said Sabrina Feld, a sophomore.

Feld said that the challenge pointed out that “a lot of time is spent on social media just blindly scrolling through and absorbing information.”

She added, “it was kind of like a check-in as a way to reconnect with people.

because it was a way of using social media other than just a form of entertainment.”

While many people are participating in challenges passed on by their friends, a few people have started the chain.

“All [the challenge] was was that you took your favorite utensil, and you took a picture of it, and then tagged a few more people to do the same,” said Noga Margalit, a junior.

“I can’t go out and see my friends, I can’t go to school, so [...] they’re just fun.”

Margalit and two of her friends created the challenge with a different mentality than many others who were following challenges.

“We hated all the challenges, but in the process of making fun of it, we became who we were making fun of, which was kind of unexpected,” said Margalit. “Still, I’m happy that out of all the challenges we could have picked, it was the weirdest one possible.”

The common thread between the three was that the challenges helped them feel

“Some of the challenges were just more fun, like ‘draw a thing,’ or ‘pick a piece of music you like,’ and I think those are fun because they’re a way to engage with people in a time where you don’t really get to see your friends, or interact with them other than FaceTiming,” said Feld.

“While this can be a time of loneliness and isolation, it also can be a time where we reestablish connections.”

Despite some of the annoying aspects of the challenges, each person noticed the positive sides as well.

“I think some of the challenges can keep you connected because they spark a conversation, so they do keep you connected in a way,” said Margalit, despite her hesitation about many challenges.

Overall, Instagram challenges have been a way to put a positive spin on quarantine “I think the challenges offer a way to take your mind off things for a little bit.

It’s really important right now to have positivity and not just look at all the bad news rolling in,” said Mei-Dan. Feld pointed out that the point of the challenges is not to save the world, but to foster small connections.

“While I think it doesn’t really impact how we change the ways that we need to help people in the hospital or avoid getting sick, I think it can be a way to make people aware that while this can be a time of loneliness and isolation, it also can be a time where we reestablish connections with people who we didn’t

have connections with before,” said Feld.

It’s clear that positivity and optimism are hard to maintain during a global pandemic, but social media challenges seem to be uplifting people and keeping online spaces positive.

“It’s really important right now to have positivity and not just look at all the bad news rolling in.”

“I know social media can also be a place of negativity,” said Feld. “But I’m glad that during the difficult times we’re in, people are turning to positivity and lifting people up, rather than using it as an opportunity to tear people down.”

STRIPPED AWAY COVID-19’s effect on exchange students

S

tripped away from the experience and memories they had signed up for, exchange students have been forced to drop everything and find a way to head home.

Junior Annaluna Grandt was in a small program in Spain called Seville Abroad.

“I had to pack very quickly so I wasn’t able to see anyone from school and my teachers,” she said.

For most of the school, quarantine meant isolating from the rest of the community and navigating a new system of education from home.

But for students on exchange programs, coronavirus changed everything.

Senior Alice Lacroix had high hopes of experiencing the American senior prom, not to mention walking across the graduation stage, seeing Boulder’s summer beauty and sitting on the sand in Miami.

“It was so hard to accept and let go of the rest of the year,” said Lacroix.

Lacroix was on an exchange to Boulder from her home city of Paris, France. She lived with a loving host family while attending Fairview.

“My experience in Boulder was just amazing in every aspect,” said Lacroix.

But as the coronavirus progressed, all exchange students were sent home. Not only did it crush the rest of her trip, but she came home to “France in a lockdown, and I can’t do anything and I can barely see my friends.”

Robbed of the rest of the American Spring semester experience, Lacroix cannot be

welcomed back to her home as well.

“I wanted to spend more time with all the people I love in Boulder.”

“I wanted more time with all the people I love [in Boulder],” she said.

Across the Atlantic, junior Ruby Brown was studying abroad in Seville, Spain when she was suddenly told she would have to leave in 10 days.

“At first, coronavirus really didn’t affect my experience. In fact, I didn’t even think about it up until the first week of March,” said Brown.

“I’m so incredibly grateful that the situation worked out like it did and we were able to get home.”

“Overall, I’m happy to be home because I definitely would not like to be in Spain during this,” said Brown.

Lucky for Grandt, her parents were visiting her for a week in Seville when Spain started shutting down.

“My parents came the day Italy closed its borders. Obviously, we could see the writing on the wall and decided that it would be safest to all go home together,” said Grandt.

For Grandt, however, the journey home totaled 28 hours of travel, along with the stress of trying to call airlines with 11 hour hold times.

“Overall, I’m happy to be home.”

“President Trump’s United States/Europe travel ban was put into place the day after my parents came,” said Grandt.

Despite the major difficulties, exchange students are happy to be home.

“I’m so incredibly grateful that the situation worked out like it did and we were able to get home,” said Grandt.

LOST MY MIND MORGAN HUNT // CO EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

S

o goes the chorus of “Lost My Mind,” a song written by junior Bella Sherry back in February. The lyrics were particularly poignant to Sherry.

“I was dealing with a lot and I was just a really broken person after my breakup...

Music for me is a massive coping mechanism.”

“Lost My Mind” was not the first time Sherry had turned her personal experience into music. Once she got her Ukulele in eighth grade, Sherry was inspired to write songs.

“Everything I was writing was so gross and they were all love songs about my eighth grade boyfriend,” said Sherry.

Since then she has worked on the craft of making music, learning to play both the guitar and the banjo. With practice, Sherry’s first public song “Lost My Mind” has had over 700 listens in the month of

April.

But Sherry’s personal definition of success is about more than numbers.

“My goal when I write is to always get it stuck in people’s heads. I was proud of myself when I had people texting saying ‘it’s stuck in my head’” said Sherry.

The creation and perfection of “Lost My Mind” can be partially attributed to the COVID quarantine. She had finished some of the lyrics before the quarantine, but due to the excess of time, she was able to finish the song and record all of the intricate harmonies. The bridge alone is 14 parts.

As for the future, Sherry is constantly working on new songs.

In reference to the pervasive disappointment relating to COVID closure, Sherry said: “And of course I’m writing a ton right now because I’m sad, which is great for inspiration.”

estside Gunn is a businessman first and a rapper second. He co-founded Griselda Records with his brother and fellow rapper Conway the Machine in 2014, their East Coast style drawing comparisons to Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep. Initially focusing on merchandise and the label itself, Gunn started rapping seriously when Conway spent time healing from a gunshot wound.

Since its inception, Griselda has grown into a staple of the underground rap scene, with critical acclaim and cosigns by the likes of 50 Cent marking their progress.

“Pray for Paris” is Westside Gunn’s 14th full-length project and his most fully realized album to date. Gunn’s unique style oozes wealth, with motifs of fashion and high art permeating every corner of the album. Gunn rattles off brands and famous designers like he invented rapping about clothes, his fervor for expensive fabrics contagious. Even the album cover was designed by Off-White founder Virgil Abloh.

opulence is set and immediately capitalized on by track “No Vacancy,” with fuzzy strings and bright piano riffs providing the background to Gunn’s introspection on lost friends and his rise to success. Gunn settles himself into the throne he built from scratch.

Westside Gunn’s love of wrestling has been a distinct characteristic of his music throughout his career, and “Pray for Paris” is no exception. “Allah Sent Me,” featuring Conway and their cousin and labelmate Benny The Butcher, is the grittiest track on the album, with graphic descriptions of crime and violence from all three rappers.

“Pray for Paris” sends Gunn down new pathways, pushing his sound and challenging him to develop his persona.

Standout track “French Toast” is about as elegant as braggadocio can get, and the first love song of Gunn’s career. But even Gunn’s infatuation isn’t immune to his fashion obsession, lyrics like “big V on you, that’s for Valentino / heard you just killed ‘em at the Raf show” reminding us

of his true focus.

Guest appearances by a variety of mainstream and underground artists act as concrete evidence to Gunn’s growing notoriety. Tyler the Creator’s verse on the understated track “327” proves the easy chemistry between his and Gunn’s very different brands of rap. Freddie Gibbs makes his mark on the album with “I got skeletons in my closet, right next to Balenciaga / call me Fred DiBiase, garage is a million dollars” encapsulating every theme of the album in two bars on “$500 Ounces.”

It’s impossible to predict what heights he’ll rise to Westside Gunn is known for his prolific output. By the end of 2020, it would be reasonable to expect two or three more full-length releases. Improving upon the achievements of “Pray for Paris” is a tall order, but with the consistent growth of his label it’s impossible to predict what heights he’ll rise to.

e have been talking about the devastating effects of coronavirus for two months with still no foreseeable end. It is important to remind ourselves that we are not in this alone.

For our graduating seniors, this year is more crucial than ever as students across the country are struggling with not only the pandemic, but the loss of graduation and goodbyes to the place many have called home for four years. Unifying despite the uncontrollable is vital, so we talked to several students from different places in the United States to share their feelings.

A senior at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California, Carmen Bordofsky, talks about how important it is to try our best to maintain a positive perspective.

“I enjoy getting to spend time with my family, especially leaving next year [for

said Bordofsky.

Maximillian Deshotel, a junior who goes to Léman Manhattan Preparatory School in New York City, has seen the intensity of COVID-19 and can’t New York understand why so some people are still refusing to take precautions.

“The longer we don't comply, the longer we’re not going to have any freedom,” said Deshotel.

The role the media and people in power/leadership positions play on how many people react to the pandemic shows a clear information disconnect.

“I think they're doing a bad job of completely informing people because everyone is hearing different news,” said Deshotel.

Many people have seen pictures of big cities across America looking like ghost towns, but students like Deshotel have seen college], I’m taking it as a blessing, because I’m viewing it as a blessing and no it first hand.

“I understand it’s a really, really crucial depends on the demographic. The college year to spend with your friends and students who are home don’t really seem experience what you've been working to be taking it seriously, but everyone else towards and it's understandable and that does,” said Bordofsky.

Editor Goodbyes...

I

f you told me at the beginning of the year about even half of the things that were going to happen in these short twelve months, I’m sure I wouldn’t believe you. What’s really hard to fathom, though, is how much a person can change in a year. I’ve never been more challenged, motivated and happy than I was in this position. I have learned so much from my co-editor Henry Larson and Advisor Doc Z, and I genuinely have no idea what I would have done without them. We tackled some substantial topics, and endured animosity from pretty much every direction, but I want to thank them both for being by my side through it all. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I started this not comprehending how much change students could make, and now know that that opportunity is endless. The staff never failed to surprise me with their determination and excellence. You all deserve big, inflatable dinos. I am so proud of everything we’ve accomplished, and I'm very excited to see what happens next for the Royal Banner. And to the readers, thank you for showing me that change starts with us.

eddy Roosevelt once said, “Far and away the best prize life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” My three years at the Royal Banner have made it abundantly clear just how true that is. I’ve had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people I’ve ever met, and the closest friends I’ve ever had. This has been a hard year, for too many reasons, and the staff of this newspaper have given everything to tell your stories during it. Thank you Ava, for being my partner and ally. Thank you to Doc Z, for being my port in a storm. Thank you Tessa and Morgan, for allowing this publication to keep growing in unforeseen ways. And Hellos...

W

e have no idea what next year is going to look like. We don’t know if we’ll be learning in our classrooms or in our bedrooms.

We don’t know if the hallways will be filled with half of its usual traffic at a time; we don’t know if there will be our usual sporting events, and dances, and graduations. 2020/2021 is, for now, a question mark.

The job of The Royal Banner is to provide the answers to that question.

Next year, we want to continue to investigate topics that affect our community and communicate their nuance simply yet fully.

We want to work with you to find what you care about, provide you with information and insights and create conversation.

We want to tell your stories.

If we know anything about next year, it’s that you’ll have plenty of stories for us to cover. We hope that you’re as excited as we are to see what that entails.
