T

he atmosphere of today’s society has heightened the sense of the ideal body image and setting unrealistic beauty standards. Social media is continuing to rapidly grow and gain popularity and there are still many unknown effects and unanswered questions.

A survey done within Fairview shows that 86.2% of students have social media accounts.

Out of all the survey participants, 68.4% claim that social media has impacted their mental health. Many students found that media has heightened their levels of anxiety and depression, and others found it has affected their body image. The gender identity of the participants of the survey were varied with 50.9% female, 46% male, 1.6% prefer not to say, 1% transgender, and 0.5% non binary. Many studies claim that females’ body image is influenced by media much more than males. However, the study within the school shows that males’ body image is influenced only a small percentage less than females.

The amount of people media influences and the mentally draining side effects are shocking.

For the participants who have or had body image issues, 41% said it was developed by social media. The other main contributors to negative views of self-image were sports and comparisons to others in day to day life. Although social media, sports, and comparisons were large factors in body image issues, they were not the only contributors that have caused problems. Some students said that parents and family members are what led to their problems with body image. These negative views were caused by issues at home or comments on their weight and size. Many students stated that their unrealistic standards are caused by themselves and the flaws they see while others

said that they “honestly have no idea.”

The media’s standard of the “ideal” body type is a malignant mirror. The promotion of these unattainable goals due to basic biology leave people empty and ashamed of their bodies. In response to these feelings, many highschoolers turn to dieting, excessive exercise, steroids, laxatives, and more.

These toxic behaviors often lead to consequential eating disorders.

The Mental Health Foundation with YouGov conducted a survey in 2019 that found that “among teenagers, 31% of teens felt ashamed in relation to their body image.”

When scrolling through social media, it is easy to see that many users post photos that have been carefully edited and selected, making sure to only highlight the best of themselves. In turn, highly doctored images receive tons of likes and comments which makes it easier to compare yourself to people with unrealistic body standards. After going on social media, many teens tend to internalize goals to lose weight or look different without even knowing it.

The most recent body image issue studies were conducted in 2018 and 2019 which demonstrates a lack of attention for this issue that is sweeping the nation. The Mental Health Foundation said, “over one in five adults (22%) and 40% of teenagers said images on social media caused them to worry about their body image.” Comparing this data and the data collected from the high school, the information is consistent and demonstrates the negative effects of media.

mutual aid brings new community and perspective to activism in Boulder maia penuel // audio editor

O

n a cold Sunday morning, a spirited group spreads out tarps and folds out tables in front of the Boulder Bandshell. As more people arrive with boxes of clothing, pieces of cardboard, and food, the bandshell fills with conversation and the supplies that will help Boulder’s homeless population survive through the winter.

The group, Boulder Valley Mutual Aid (BVMA), was started in 2020 with the goal of bringing justice and direct support to Boulder’s unhoused communities. During the pandemic, in a time where many lost their means of survival, mutual aid provides community and resources for everyone.

“Mutual aid puts the people most affected at the center of the decision making process of [...] how we’re using resources,” said Ellory Boyd, a freshman at CU Boulder, and one of the organizers who started BVMA. “To me, mutual aid can be summed up as ‘give what you can, take what you need,’” said Alli Sanders, a Fairview junior.

In the Denver-Boulder area, where, according to the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, Black and Indigenous people make up disproportionately high numbers of the homeless population (see graph), there is little official support for homeless populations.

In addition to the overall lack of support, the City of Boulder is cur-

rently facilitating “sweeps,” where police and city workers force those living in encampments to vacate the area with all of their belongings.

“People are losing their only possessions, what keeps them warm,” said Boyd. “It’s extremely disruptive to anyone’s life to have to move like that all the time.”

The sweeps are also in violation of guidelines from the CDC, which advised at the beginning of the pandemic that “clearing encampments can cause people to disperse throughout the community and break connections with service providers. This increases the potential for infectious disease spread.”

Despite this, at a city council meeting on Tuesday, January 19, Boulder City Council discussed further plans to establish an “Encampment Coordinator,” who would, according to the council’s meeting agenda, “oversee the operational function of encampment cleanups.”

lems that exist,” said Boyd. They said that sweeps are just one example of this disconnect, which is a result of a “chain of events that puts a lot of stigma on people with severe mental health problems and who may be using drugs.”

them to fill this gap and address the needs of those experiencing homelessness.

“A big impact [of mutual aid] is that it’s much more face to face. I’m learning what people want to have rather than what I assume that they want,” said Ileana Rivera, another organizer for BVMA and a CU student.

Rivera organizes hygiene kits for distribution at BVMA’s events.

The kits help to get unhoused people back on their feet after sweeps, where it’s necessary to focus on larger belongings like tents.

“Being able to actually speak to the people I’m trying to help has been really eye-opening,” Rivera said. “The human aspect of actually having conversations with people is so huge. That’s the difference between mutual aid and charity — connection.”

To newcomers, this connection is a large aspect of what’s so attractive about mutual aid.

“It’s a way to get out into the community and connect with people,” said Claire Zhang, a sophomore at Fairview. “It’s hard to find spaces where I feel welcomed and mutual aid is a great way to experience that.”

For the organizers, volunteers, and the unhoused people who seek help at BVMA’s events, the impact of mutual aid is direct.

“It definitely feels a lot more directly impactful to our local community than [larger movements]. While doing large scale things is really cool, it can sometimes feel like you don’t have much of an impact, but with mutual aid, you can see the direct impact you’re making,” said Sanders, who also organizes in Sunrise Movement, a national youth climate movement.

This form of community work is a much-needed addition to Boulder, as it helps to dismantle the systemic

inequalities that are perpetuated with top-down charity work.

“A lot of us, speaking as a white middle-class person, grew up [hearing], ‘don’t give your time to [unhoused people] because they chose this lifestyle, they’re not worthy of your time and energy.’ I just want to point out that that really is upholding white supremacy and upholding class structures that keep us from valuing

people outside of their wealth status,” said Boyd. “Talk to your family and the people in your community who have those outdated attitudes around unhoused communities, because [unhoused communities] really are the frontline of the people getting f***ed over most by our political systems right now.”

A

s a kid, I had always wished that I would one day witness a historical event, so that I could say “I was there.” In my mind, I envisioned a rocket launch to Mars or the discovery of a cancer cure. However, when I picked up my phone on the morning of January 6th and saw the United States Capitol building being invaded and defiled, I realized this was the historical event my younger self was waiting for. The gravity of the situation didn’t immediately strike me; only when I saw the American flag being lowered and a Trump flag being raised did I start seeing what was truly happening. A coup attempt was in progress — and “I was there.”

On live television, I saw a woman (who would later be identified as Ashli Babbitt) bleeding profusely from her neck, being wheeled out to an ambulance. I saw the mob taking selfies and livestreaming friendly conversations with police officers inside. I saw innocent journalists being harassed and assaulted.

“Murder The Media” was carved into the Capitol doors. I saw zero masks, and people jokingly coughing on each other. And what stuck with me the most wasn’t any of that. It was the laughter and the smiles of those participating.

I was born a few miles outside of

Washington, DC. I have grown up around, and returned many times to visit the Capitol. In my eyes, it was always a mythical palace of democracy. I remember vividly shaking with fear as I walked past the all-black armored security guards, my eyes fixed on their glossy assault rifles and my ears pestered by the growling of a bomb-sniffing dog.

Based on this experience, I would assume my first thought was similar to many other Americans: How does this happen?

Truthfully, the answer probably lies under layers of partisan bureaucracy. That is something a common American will never be able to unlock. All things considered, the police (while still partially at fault) are not the catalyst in this event. Hours before, I had watched President Trump’s remarks at the “Save America Rally,” and stupidly thought very little of him encouraging a protest in front of the Capitol. I put my phone down for a while to attend class, and when I picked it back up to check in on the news for my other article, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Do you associate these things with the Capitol? Well now you do.

To desecrate the halls where the nation we love was built should be

deeply offensive to every American.

Regardless of your reservations or political grievances with the humans who work in that building, no change in any direction happens without it. Two of my grandparents are immigrants, and the other two belong to arguably two of the most persecuted groups in history: Native Americans and Jews. What they taught me was that America was not something to be taken for granted. The internal peace we have maintained is, in the context of global history, quite remarkable.

My family learned the value of democracy through risk and refuge.

My generation has learned it through consequence.

The million-dollar question has become “what now?” Now, I am not very religious, but I am praying that we make it through Inauguration Day without incident. Joe Biden has selected a diverse, progressive cabinet that many people are excited to see in office. Pete Buttigieg, Deb Haaland, and Merrick Garland are among these names. Only time will tell if Democrats can capitalize on a newfound majority in both houses of Congress, but many are hopeful

that easily-solved issues that Trump neglected will be dealt with swiftly (i.e. COVID). My own feeling is hesitant. Republicans are fuming, and after having many in their base suffer the consequences of inciting violence on social media, will be out for revenge. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a newly elected congresswoman from Georgia (also a documented supporter of far-right conspiracy group QAnon), appeared on the proTrump channel Newsmax on January 14th to inform the American people that she planned on filing articles of impeachment against Joe Biden on the 21st. This would not only be Biden’s first full day in office, but also the first day of the full Democrat Congress.

In response, host Greg Kelly paused for a second confusedly, then asked, “How is that gonna work?” I don’t know, Greg. I really don’t. It made me question how rational these people actually are. During my research for my online article, I had access to Parler, the unmoderated Trumpist echo chamber Twitter clone.

I thought I could casually scroll through the feed,

just seeing right-leaning ideas and personalities. It was 6:30 in the morning where I was, and all I saw were graphic plots for more violence. Someone had created an “execute Mike Pence” thread (in response to him not legally being able to overturn the election), and comments below were going into excruciating detail on how it should and will be done. Emphasis on “will” because while I couldn’t stomach any more, I did notice people planning time, place, method, etc. I put my phone down.

There is a famous spoken-word piece (and Kanye West song, but I digress) by Gil Scott-Heron titled “Who Will Survive in America?” that is still very poignant. While full of raw, occasionally vulgar emotion, the piece asks an important question: who is this country built for? And when an all-white mob strolls down the Capitol steps after breaking in and defacing artifacts, and is home for dinner, the answer becomes painfully obvious. Being multiracial, I have felt threatened yet overlooked, which is enough

to keep me safe. With the country so deeply and violently divided, it feels like we are crossing the Grand Canyon on a shoelace tightrope.

Whether we fall or make it to the other side together is up to time, and all we can do now is hold each other close and hope for the best.

My dad told me one thing on the day of the insurrection: at least it’s over, and now the entire world and most of the country is united against a clear evil. I’m an anxious person, so my attention remains on those not included in that “most.” Being an opinion and politics journalist during this time has been a test of my moral resolve, but also a blessing.

I am still a bit high-strung when I do public interviews or talk to Trump supporters (important distinction, some Republicans have been very open-minded) these days. But I am not deterred. I have an incredible opportunity to interpret the world journalistically, and having people better understand current events because of it is all I can hope for.

T

his December, about a month after taking the PSAT, Junior students at Fairview received an email. It read, “Next week you will be receiving your score reports from the PSAT/NMSQT administration from October 29. We wanted to let you know that due to miscommunication with testing date changes in October, these score reports are going to be used for guidance purposes only.” This meant that the scores from the PSAT taken on October 29th could not be used to qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

The National Merit Scholarship is important to many high school juniors because if you score well enough on the PSAT, you can be awarded scholarships to many colleges. For some students, this was an opportunity to retake their test and gain a higher score, but for others, it felt like a write off of all their hard work. Many students blamed Fairview for the mishap, but the stem of the problem was actually caused by the College Board, who administered the PSAT. There was not much information released regarding the issue, but we know that it was the College Board’s decision to not accept PSAT scores this year. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation agreed to accept students’ scores only if the College Board did so as well. All we know is that there was

a miscommunication with test dates and the curve used to grade the test, so therefore the College Board deemed Fairview’s tests illegitimate. The incident was not solely specific to Fairview, and similar situations happened at many schools across the country.

You would expect the majority of Juniors at Fairview to be angry about their tests being disqualified, especially if they scored highly on the PSAT, but instead, multiple students seemed to not even be phased by the mishap.

Junior Ian Ortman said, “I don’t care that much because the PSAT doesn’t really matter for colleges and other stuff like that.”

Another Junior, Ruby Smith, took a similar viewpoint saying, “I don’t really care because I know I wouldn’t have won the National Merit Scholarship anyways.”

In spite of the large population of Juniors that didn’t seem to mind all that happened, there were a few students that thought the incident seemed unjust.

“I think it’s really unfair that they’re not counting the first score because people study for these tests, and also because of the risk that we took going to school to take the test and sit in a room with other students,” said junior Lola Brunner.

Junior Emily Maran had mixed feelings about the test.

“I’m happy that I have the opportunity to improve my score, however, I am not super excited about sitting through

a three hour test again. They are super long and take up almost half of my day,” said Maran.

The PSAT has been rescheduled for January 29th, and many students plan to retake the exam in order to possibly qualify for a scholarship.

But even though millions of students are taking the PSAT every year, it is becoming less and less popular, and students are beginning to take note of the issues they find within the test.

The PSAT has become a very competitive test, and more students have started to feel the pressure behind the seemingly meaningless assessment.

Many students feel standardized testing reduces them to a number, and the PSAT is just an addition to the stress that comes from more important exams such as the SAT and ACT. Maran said, “I believe that stan-

dardized test scores are not an accurate representation of a student’s ability to perform in tests in school or a reflection of their character. Most everyone that I know is spending thousands of dollars on an SAT or ACT tutor in order to get the scores acceptable for applying to prestigious schools. While we are privileged to have this opportunity, I think it’s completely unfair for students that come from lower income families.”

Maran, along with many other students, believes that these tests, including the SAT and ACT, should not be a determining factor in college admissions. Due to covid, many colleges have made testing optional for students in the next one to two years. Some California schools are even saying goodbye

These factors do make you wonder, what is the future of standardized testing in the United States?

It seems as if the importance behind these exams is starting to die out, and we may see an entirely different college admissions process for teens in the years to come.

W

ith school being largely online, school traditions have mostly been cancelled or rearranged. Among these are choir concerts. This past winter, the choir department adapted their annual winter concert to be virtual.

During the semester leading up to the concert, the choir directors, Janice Vlachos and Zach Coles, kept the core values of the choir department.

“Throughout this whole thing, a sense of community was the most

important thing to us,” said Vlachos.

Likewise, Coles said, “We’ve [...] gone with the sense of making sure our students have ownership, connections, and community.”

Shifting to an online concert called for adjustments during classes as well as for how the concert was to be presented.

“Every day, we do vocal warmups and then we rehearse our music as we usually would, but we can only hear the piano and ourselves. It’s definitely pretty depressing singing in your room by yourself,” said senior Hayley Touhig.

Staying online during rehearsals felt limiting to some, and contrasts between online and in-person choir rose to be evident.

Junior Annessa Buggy said, “It’s

hard to create [...] bonds and friendship when you can’t even see all of the choir students.”

“I most disliked the loss of team spirit in choir that we don’t get as a result of us not

meeting in person. [Singing online is] a very lonely and isolating experience. One of the most vital aspects of any choir is human connection, the synergy that the entire group develops when we’re singing together,” said Kohav.

“It’s a very lonely and isolating experience.”

Although choir students were unable to interact with one another face to face, some felt more driven and took advantage of the creative opportunities presented by the situation.

“I was more motivated to learn my part in depth because I knew that if I sang something off it would be much more noticeable,” said sophomore Sara Moran.

“I liked that we had some flexibility to be creative and do what we wanted for the videos,” said senior

Quinn Hirschland.

An annual tradition at the end of the choir winter concert is for every student from all of the choirs to sing the holiday classic Silent Night.

Fortunately, this tradition was able to be continued, despite this different circumstance. Many of the choir students are beyond pleased for the opportunity to continue their love for music.

“I’m so grateful for Mrs. [Vlachos] and Mr. Coles who relentlessly try

and make this year as enjoyable as possible and advance our musical educations,” said Touhig.

Similarly, Kohav said, “Knowing how much time Mrs. Vlachos and Mr. Coles have spent outside of the school hours putting together our videos, recordings, and lesson plans is so inspiring — their hard work is unmatched.”

I

n the ten months that the coronavirus has plagued our lives, the use of mainstream food delivery services has skyrocketed.

GrubHub, Doordash, and Postmates are three of the most successful firms in the remote delivery industry. According to MarketWatch, these businesses, along with competitor UberEats, have doubled their sales from April to September of 2020. This earned them a collective 5.5 billion.

These services are very popular, but we wanted to find out if they are truly worth the enthusiasm.

Royal Banner editors Aria Wozniak, Lauren Hirschhorn, and Morgan Hunt set out to compare GrubHub, DoorDash, and Postmates.

Their study factored in accessibility, pricing, delivery time, and overall experience to determine the most favorable app.

In this investigation, the editors each tested a different business: GrubHub by Lauren, Doordash by Aria, and Postmates by Morgan.

To obtain the most accurate data, several factors were held constant.

First, they all ordered from the same restaurant from the Hill, Kung Fu Tea. They all purchased Rosehip

Lemonade and were set to be delivered to Fairview High School.

Second, the purchases were all made at the exact same time.

All of the apps were laid out very similarly, with a tracking map, ability to contact the driver, and easy accessibility.

People want to be able to track the arrival time of their food, and luckily, each app has that feature. Doordash and GrubHub had a ten minute range of when the food would arrive, while Postmates estimated down to the minute.

Updated tracking on the food status is a valuable tool for customers.

Interestingly, each app used a different map service, which made for a different look: Apple Maps for GrubHub, Google Maps for Doordash, and a custom map for Postmates.

The real race is in delivery time. All drinks were ordered at exactly 12:53.

Doordash took home gold with a time of 25 minutes. Postmates came in at a close second and they both arrived at 1:18. However, GrubHub took its time, and delivered at 1:26.

Each company’s price model varied, though the editors ordered identical products.

Food delivery is an exorbitant indulgence.

Off the store menu, the Rosehip Lemonade is $4.35, a mere drop in the bucket compared to the steep price of a food delivery service. The drink cost $5.05 on both GrubHub and Doordash while it cost $6.09 on Postmates. The services build in extra costs in addition to the product cost, delivery fee and tip.

After tip and tax, the totals rang in at $11.02 at GrubHub, $11.43 at Doordash, and $21.15 at Postmates.

Compared to the in-store price, ordering from these apps is definitely a splurge. In this case, it was 3-5 times more expensive than the normal boba price.

The experiment reveals that Doordash is the best delivery service with relatively low pricing, speedy delivery time, and solid service. Note that this is only one experiment, and superior data would involve multiple trials.

Although ordering from these apps is tempting, ordering directly from a restaurant that delivers is better for your wallet. In addition, it benefits the restaurant’s profits, a much needed contribution during the Covid-19 pandemic and there is no restaurant fee that delivery apps take away.

Most importantly, it is still possible and important to support local restaurants from home, especially during such trying times.
