T

he room was full of energy as Senior Zach Schwartz grabbed the mike. Taking a glance at the crowd, Schwartz began to deliver one of his jokes to an eager audience. Schwartz appeared completely natural and at ease on the stage, as the audience began to laugh and react with his set.

Schwartz is an aspiring comedian that often participates in local comedy sets.

On Saturday, September 7th, Schwartz delivered some of his material to the audience at local bar and bike repair shop, “The Tune Up.” Every Saturday night, the establishment hosts a comedy night, where comedians can sign up to deliver their material to the packed crowd. Schwartz’s set was extremely popular, prompting laughter from the audience.

“I like hearing the laughs. I like making people laugh,” said Schwartz. “And it’s just fun.”

Senior Paul-Kaan Chulliat was also at the open mic, delivering his first standup show. His set focused around his own experiences and thoughts about growing up as trilingual.

“I did a skit about languages,” said Chulliat. “That’s inspired by myself and my personal experience [be]cause I’m trilingual and my family’s very culturally diverse.”

“I like the [shows] where people laugh,” said Schwartz. “I like the bar we were at [on Saturday]. That was a nice one.”

Schwartz “won” the night. The crowd determined he would win the sought-after $25 bar tab.

Schwartz has been involved in comedy for several years and hopes to continue it

“I pretty much just like wrote down ideas that I got on a daily basis,” said Chulliat.

“Like whenever I got them, I would just take out my notebook and write down those little ideas and, slowly by slowly, I pieced things together.”

Schwartz and Chulliat demonstrate the talent and courage that students can encompass. The student body should look forward to their upcoming endeavors as stand-up comedians.

“Go to a mic. Go to an open mic and just try it out,” said Schwartz. “Because you don’t know if a joke will work unless you try it out.”

HOME RUN DEAL A Deep Dive into Life as a Committed Athlete NOAH EDELMAN // ASSOCIATE SPORTS SECTION EDITOR

R

ecently, the NCAA released a set of rule changes that allowed juniors to officially commit to college. Traditionally, only seniors could take official visits and sign their letter of intent, but now a select few juniors have made the cut.

Among them is JD Jones, who is committed to the University of Miami. He verbally committed as a sophomore, but signed this September. He will be taking his official visit this November.

Baseball head coach David Castillo is passionate about his players finding the right fit.

“I would always tell an athlete: 'go to each college, find the right fit for what you want to achieve outside of the sport,'” said Castillo.

For athletes who have committed,

a new level of pressure reveals itself.

Between honing their craft at practice and keeping their grades up, being a committed athlete is no easy task.

“Communication with the college, while complicated, is regulated well.”

Jones, a junior originally from Chicago, is part of a new wave of athletes who have been affected by the NCAA’s new regulations.

“I like the way that the NCAA handles this process,” he said. “ Communication with the college, while complicated, is regulated well.”

Traditionally, in-person coaching was the go-to for colleges. However, in the last few years, athletes have begun to transition to online highlight platforms.

“Nowadays a lot of things are online, obviously. Which is also good and bad. Kids will upload all their hits, and there's some talent.

But really good coaches that know mechanics, they can see through that,” said Castillo.

Jones expressed his opinion on the highlight platforms as well.

“For recruiting I made a video with Louis Birch that showcased my skills. He then posted that video on

YouTube and sent it out to a lot of colleges,” said Jones. “Although that is not what got me seen by Miami, it was a great tool in getting me exposure.

Video is a great way of doing that.”

According to MaxPreps, Jones scored 14 runs, had 8 RBIs, and had a fielding percentage of .981 last season.

Jones was disappointed but is raring to go at the new season’s opportunity.

“Both I and the team underperformed last season, but I

think that has given us more drive to win this season,” said Jones.

Life as a baseball player in Colorado isn’t particularly easy.

Scouting and recruiting opportunities are considerably more common in

Southern states.

“Sometimes you have to go play in a warmer state in the summer, or travel, or be in a tournament to hopefully get in front of that coach,” said Castillo. “You can play maybe 3 to 5 games and [the college coach] can make a judgment of what he wants to offer you or if you’re the right fit for his university program.”

However, the climate situation is not an ultimatum.

“The Northern states will come down and recruit a lot of players,” said Castillo.

Northern interest has lead to an abundance of committed athletes, especially in baseball. About five years ago, the baseball team had fourteen committed seniors. It is worth noting that a baseball team only includes nine players on the actual field, meaning the depth of talent extended to the players on the bench as well.

This is no issue for Castillo.

“Out of those few those guys not playing, they still have great ability,” said Castillo.

This depth of quality shows in the

SPORTS 24 player-deep roster this year, and Jones is definitely ready for the new season.

“I feel really good about this upcoming season. With Adam Moser committing to Oklahoma, Brett Jones to Trinity, and Greysen Carter getting heavily recruited, I believe we will be a serious contender for state this year,” said Jones.

Head coaches at any level live an intense life. College coaches are in weekly contact with their players, which sometimes can mean at least 30 calls a week. Coach Castillo is inspired by these hard-working coaches.

“They work a ton. Those are the good ones. Those are the ones that really are involved,” he said. “You want that communication.”

For the players and coaches, commitment is a daunting task, but always a welcome challenge.

Jones is ready to give it everything he’s got this season.

“I want to be able to outplay anyone on the field at any time,” he said.

“Because of this I am pushing myself even harder than before.”

T

oday, high school students all over the world are both blessed and cursed by social media. While social media helps people connect with each other and builds stronger ties, it also reduces many social interactions to a tiny screen.

“It’s addicting, obviously, but I think it also just keeps people together. I mean, there’s people I don’t contact with in real life that I can contact over social media,” said

sophomore Jayden Anderson. “You get stuck to it sometimes.”

Anderson isn’t alone in the feeling of overusing social media.

According to the Pew Research Center, a 2018 survey revealed that 54% of teens aged 13-17 believe they spend too much time on their cellphones, and 41% of teens believe they spend too much time on social media. What’s more, 57% of teens say they have taken steps to cut down on social media use.

Freshman Sarah Robinson said, “[Social media] has gotten addicting, that’s for sure. There’s times I try to delete one of the apps, just because I find myself on it too much.”

Other students felt the same way.

“I probably use it a bit too much,” said junior Ali Koss of her social media usage.

Still, despite the addictive nature of social media, it continues to be an important place to exchange information, including news, activism and school events. Now more than ever, social media is becoming an important news source for young and old generations alike.

“Current events, like [...] the Brazil Amazon forest fires, that’s been going all over Instagram,” said Anderson. “I wouldn’t have checked a news source because I don’t think a lot of people check news sources, but they’ll check their Instagram.”

Social media also helps keep people together and connect people within communities.

“I go to camps every year, so I

have friends from other states,” said Koss.

She uses social media to stay in touch with people from past experiences.

All of this melds into a complicated relationship between teenagers and social media, which became a common thread between Koss, Anderson and Robinson.

“If I see my friends doing something and I’m not there I guess I just feel like I’m not in the group,” said Robinson.

Between seeing others online posting pictures of a fun time without her, to stereotypes and social standards perpetuated through social media, Koss said that although social media is good for staying informed, but for people’s mental health, it is destructive.

“I just feel like I’m not in the group.”

This is just one way social media has been destructive to students’ mental health.

Anderson said, “I think that people who [...] only see the positive can say, ‘why am I not meeting that level?’ and ‘why am I not doing that?’ and it can really hurt selfesteem.”

As a generation, we have learned - or at least tried to learn - to take away the positives of social media: getting news, staying in touch with friends and finding communities, while also remembering, that social media, as Koss said, is “kinda [...] just a picture on a screen.”

he administration has been working hard recently to ensure the safety of every student at this school. One area that has proved to be a major obstacle in this effort is the 100 Hall, which is where many Language Arts classes take place.

There are many positive aspects of the new wing, including open areas to hang out in and plenty of natural lighting, as most classes in the hall are modern and well-lit by many windows.

In addition, two of the classrooms are equipped with fully functioning garage doors. These garage doors, mostly made of glass, help to create more space between the classroom and the hallway when opened. However, there is one major concern: the safety of these classrooms.

Some teachers are concerned about what would happen in these classrooms in the case of a lockdown.

“There’s no way during a lockdown to get out of sight because we have just walls of glass. And they told us they were going to be bulletproof and things like that, and they’re not,” said Angela Hunt, a Language Arts teacher with a classroom in the 100 Hall.

Originally, the plan for a lockdown was for teachers and students to flip the tables on their sides and crouch behind them.

However, many people had concerns about this plan because of the height of the tables.

“The individual tables are like two feet tall. So you can still see every single student,” said Hunt.

These unforeseen drawbacks of

the new classrooms have caused administration to rethink their approach to protecting students and staff during a lockdown.

“They’ll be bolting out [of the Langauge Arts classrooms], but you can get out of there pretty quickly

“There’s no way...to get out of sight because we have just walls of glass.” because, again, that door going into that hallway seals off that whole sector,” said Principal Don Stenstrud.

During construction, the school installed new doors at the entrances of each hall coming off of the student center. In case of a lock down, the doors will self lock, preventing any shooter from entering into a hall if they are in the student center.

However, the new plan of evacuation has some flaws of its own. During a recent fire drill, the back door in the Langauge Arts hall jammed, making it hard for teachers and students to carry out the drill.

“When we tried to do a drill, we couldn’t even get out the back door,”

said Hunt.

Even after getting the door fixed, the lockdown procedure still has some obstacles, including yet another problem with that very same door.

“It’s hard for me [to open the back door] though [because] I’m short,” said Hunt.

Despite the work of the staff to make sure there are reliable plans in place in the case of a lockdown, some students are still unaware of the possible problems concerning the safety of the classrooms. Freshman Ella Tolar is one of these students.

“This is the first I’ve heard about it, and I’m a freshman so I haven’t really talked to anyone about it. But this is the first time anyone has ever mentioned it,” said Tolar.

In contrast, many students — upperclassmen especially — have heard about the new plans, and are uncertain about how safe it actually is.

“I feel that they would clearly notice. If they’re near the L.A. hall, they’ll hear a lot of people running away,” said junior Molly Herz. “It would be an easy target too. There would be a lot of students running out of the school toward the same place. They could easily shoot down a couple of kids,” As the lockdown procedure continues to be revised, students and teachers alike worry about the safety of the school.

Herz said, “I’m just frustrated.”

MARCHING MADNESS The excitement of competing in marching band MORGAN HUNT // ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT SECTION EDITOR

lanning for the Marching Knights’ season starts early.

Last December, band director Travis Keller met with designers to start thinking about a theme for the 2019 season.

They chose “Tango del Toro,” a bullfighting theme inspired by a scene from the movie “Moulin Rouge.”

This fall, the band will be performing five pieces of music, which range from classical pieces to pop music.

Marching band practice also starts early.

In August, when most students were lounging at the beach or resting at home, 106 band members assembled on the hot turf. One of the top priorities was introducing newcomers to the world of marching band. They began to learn how to stand and walk, which are the basics of marching.

“Here’s how you stand up. Here’s how you put your feet. Here’s how you do literally step one,” said Keller.

When it comes to the band’s prospects for the current season, he added: “A lot of it has to do with the kids and the performance and how they come together.”

The first Marching Knights performance was at a home football game on September 13. The band played at the homecoming game against Rock Canyon on September

27 as well. However, football game performances are a small part of the band’s season. Though band members like performing at games, they only play a few every year.

“The band really enjoys playing pep band music at football games and performing during halftime, and it’s something I think we would enjoy doing more,” said junior Jamie Lutes, third year band student and saxophone section leader.

One of the reasons the band does not play more games is the cost.

“We get $1,300 from the district to run our whole program, but that isn’t enough to get the band to one football game. It doesn’t even scratch the surface for what we have to raise,” said Keller.

But for the band, the season is really about competitions.

In a typical competition, there are 30 bands that compete in two rounds, preliminaries and finals. There are seven judges who evaluate each band on different elements of the show and give a score based on 100 points. Some of the judges are on the field judging individual music, and some are in the press box judging the visual aspects, such as marching formations. Depending on the competition, roughly ten bands advance to the finals.

This year, the marching band will attend four competitions and the state championship. The Marching Knights have never won a championship, but they have finished third place in five of the past six years, including last year.

Learning the show also poses difficulties, especially for band members who do not have a dance background. To succeed, the band must learn choreography, including dance moves such as tondues and chassés.

“It used to be just play some music and march around, but now there’s lots of dance and performance. So it’s almost like a theater production on the football field,” said Keller.

One of the band’s iconic moves is the jazz run. Every performance includes a sequence with one of these challenging runs and it is one of the hardest moves to learn.

“The jazz run is the highest level visual technique we do, where the upper body is still but you are running,” said senior Chelsea Ekins, a drum major. “But they are really epic and cool.”

Leaders are also important to success at competitions. There are three drum majors in charge of conducting the band during the performances, Chelsea Eakins, Paul-Kaan Chulliat and Emily Balog. This

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT is a high stakes job. Any mistakes by the leaders can confuse the band and ruin the show.

“On podium we are there to give instructions to the band. The most important thing is that both Paul-Kaan and I are in time with Emily, and Emily is in time with our center snare so that we don’t have any major issues,” said Eakins.

With the greatest stakes come the greatest rewards. The drum majors do not let the pressure ruin their band experience.

“My favorite part is when I give the band

my energy and passion, they give it back.

I love the feeling of how the audience responds when we put our heart and soul into what we are doing,” said senior Emily Balog.

One of Balog’s most memorable band moments came during competition last year, while conducting “Africa” by Toto.

The band played the opening chords and the crowd started screaming.

“I couldn’t stop smiling,” she said.

Band is more than the medals. The program brings joy to over 100 students

per year.

“There are just some reps that you can tell the band is having a fun time and they are enjoying what they are playing. My entire goal is to make sure that they are having a good time,” said Eakins. “The freshman, by the time they get to school, they have a bunch of friends.”

“It is just a really kind and supportive community. We all really care about each other,” said Balog. “All 106 of us are friends.”

NO HALO

The newest album by BROCKHAMPTON

Los Angeles rap collective BROCKHAMPTON built a devoted fan base out of thin air with 2017’s “SATURATION” trilogy of albums, released within months of each other and promoted with a variety of tours, music videos, and merch drops. The group created the trilogy independently, and when BROCKHAMPTON announced that they had signed to RCA Records in March of 2018, fans were skeptical.

A series of breakup rumors, cancelled projects, and the forced removal of founding member Ameer followed.

BROCKHAMPTON survived and released their major label debut “Iridescence” that September.

While Ameer’s absence weighed heavily on “Iridescence,” August 2019’s follow-up “GINGER” shows the group maturing and filling the gaps he left.

However, that doesn’t automatically make it good. Aspects of the project fall somewhere between predictable and uninteresting.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the “SATURATION” era was how instantly memorable songs were. Early cuts such as “GOLD” and “ZIPPER” featured infectious hooks and warranted countless listens. “GINGER” lacks this quality almost entirely. Aside from the singles, the only track that stands out after my initial listen is “HEAVEN BELONGS TO YOU,” a minute-and-a-half-interlude with vocals provided entirely by UK rapper Slowthai. That’s not to say that there weren’t any enjoyable songs, but there was nothing to immediately return to.

“GINGER” showcases BROCKHAMPTON at their most mature, sometimes crossing over into sounding weary. “GINGER” is their most laid-back album to date, lacking the high energy tracks of previous projects. The lyrical content of most BROCKHAMPTON music has always centered around not fitting in, depression, and insecurity.

“GINGER” follows suit while seeing BROCKHAMPTON finally sounding less preachy and more self aware. On “DEARLY DEPARTED” Dom McLennon raps, “When somebody that you know throws you in the fire/how do you survive?” painting a picture of betrayal and loss. McLennon feels bleak, searching for an answer that isn’t really there.

4th single “NO HALO” starts the album strong, with acoustic strumming over a slower beat giving the members of BROCKHAMPTON room to discuss their shortcomings. Matt Champion, one of the most skilled members, spits the first verse, detailing a failing relationship and being replaced. It’s classic BROCKHAMPTON, but different enough that it feels fresh.

Not all of the slower tracks live up to “NO HALO.” Their shtick becomes stale on tracks such as “LOVE ME FOR LIFE,” with the same topics rehashed

without interesting enough production or lyricism to stand out. There’s no growth from previous projects. Thankfully, member Joba has managed to ditch some of the over the top, dramatic persona used on previous albums. Earlier verses by him were hit or miss, sometimes standing out and other times making tracks nearly unlistenable. On “GINGER,” he’s much more personal, his emotional performances down-to earth-and human.

The album shows BROCKHAMPTON moving in a new direction while still maintaining elements of their original sound that made them unique. They sound polished without being commercialized.

But a cleaner sound comes at the cost of losing some of the more risky moments that made the group interesting in the first place.

CIRCLE OF LIFE A review of Disney’s latest remake

and actors that were included in the movie were incredible. The character Zazu created a comedy aspect in the movie that I greatly appreciated. Zazu is voiced by John Oliver, and the fit for the role is great. Other recognizable voices include Beyonce, Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, and Seth Rogen. I enjoyed being able to recognize these famous voices during the movie.

Even though the cast was great, I thought the movie lacked aspects that I loved from the original film. I found that some of the magic and fun of the original movie has been turned into realistic wildlife situations, and it transformed everything for the worse. hen I decided to go see “ The Lion King,” I had no idea what to expect. I loved the original Disney version, and had heard mixed reviews about the new version.

Some people told me they loved it, while others said it was boring and not what they expected to see.

According to Variety.com, the movie earned a total of 191 million dollars during opening weekend, but the movie earned a low rating of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes. After seeing the movie, I can understand why.

The movie theater was mostly empty

when I walked in, but I expected that.

It was September when I saw the film, and it was released in July. The movie began with a beautiful scene of an African savanna full of animals and wildlife. The graphics were incredible, to the point where the animals and plants almost looked real. The trouble started when the animals started talking. When talking was added over these hyper realistic images, something didn’t quite fit. It felt more like a documentary rather than a classic children’s movie.

Although the graphics did not fit the aura of the original movie, the characters

I found the movie to be uninspiring and average. I give props to Disney for the incredible graphics and a great cast, but other than that, I will stick to watching the good old Lion King from 1994.

ELECTION PREP A look into election year

A

s 2020 rapidly approaches, the political scene begins to explode, similar to what we saw in the months leading up to the 2016 election.

With a nation as politically divided as the United States, the 2020 election will continue to rock the country. Amidst the current political turmoil, we are left with many questions: who will challenge the incumbent, Downald J. Trump, in such a strong economy? Why are there so many Democratic candidates, and does this show a lack of unity?

To help give insight into this, we have chosen six candidates from the nearly two dozen presidential candidates across the political spectrum to focus on and hopefully address the many questions and perspectives of the upcoming primary elections.

Social studies teacher Dan Niedringhaus advises, “If you hear solutions you like, start investigating that candidate.”

As seen in the 2016 election, there can often be “hurt feelings” following a primary election resulting in a lower general election turnout.

“Whoever you support, on either side,

whatever, if your candidate doesn’t win [in the primaries] it’s not an excuse for apathy or for tuning out [in the general election],” said social studies teacher, Aaron Hendrikson.

“If you hear solutions you like, start investigating that candidate.”

With an overwhelming number of candidates, the current polls do not show a clear Democratic candidate dramatically pulling ahead of the others to compete against President Trump himself.

Hendrikson recommends to be careful reading too far into polls so early in the process:

“[Don’t] pay a ton of attention to national polls right now because it's mostly name recognition,” said Hendrikson.

With so many Democratic candidates supporting similar versions of policies and belief systems, it often attracts voter pools which could back multiple candidates this will prove to be very interesting as the number of candidates begins to thin out.

“I could see Joe Biden flaming out and a ton of that support going to Kamala Harris...I could also see either [Bernie] Sanders or [Elizabeth] Warren, but probably Sanders, dropping out and Elizabeth Warren having tremendous support,” said Hendrikson, on the possibilities of a narrowing democratic nominee race.

Warren, a progressive, sits to the left of the political spectrum. Her background is in teaching law, however she has been a U.S. Senator since 2012. As President, her three major goals are to end corruption from capitalistic policies, drastically change legislation on gun violence, and expand social security.

Some may be seeking a candidate that

POLITICS believes in some radical issues, but appeals to moderates and progressives. That candidate is Kamala Harris.

Harris, the former Attorney General of California, is a current first term Senator who labels herself as a candidate “For The People”. She has a controversial history as attorney general surrounding marijuana but she has recently shared how she strives to fix the current criminal justice system, and lower taxes for the American middle class.

“The majority of the student population [is] not necessarily moderate.”

According to one politically active Junior, Rachel Tseng, “The majority of the [Fairview] student population, especially since they lean left, are not necessarily moderate. The more outspoken people I do see tend to rally around candidates such as Bernie and Harris- those kind of candidates that lean radical.”

Biden continues to support his campaign

and uphold his vision for the country: Rebuilding the middle class- the class that built America, according to Biden. Through the “power of Our example”, Biden plans to meet the unavoidable challenges of the world.

While Biden’s vision is powerful to some, “I fear many young voters will find Biden too white, too old, too male to be able to appeal to them.” says Rachel Tseng.

One closer to home candidate is currently running as well. Michael Bennett is a moderate Democrat and Senator from Colorado who hopes to better the economy, reduce taxes for parents, and restore integrity in the government. He also hopes to raise opportunities for all Americans alike. Although he is performing at under 1% in the current polls, he poses moderate views on 21st century issues.

In contrast to the Democratic party, Republicans have it down to a compact four candidates.

The school undoubtedly leans liberal, but for those who are open to a moderate Republican candidate who has taken the challenge to run to replace Trump, some may be interested in William Weld.

A former governor of Massachusetts, Weld strongly opposes mass deportation and is pushing for moderate reform surrounding immigration. He wants the USA to reenter the Paris Climate Accords due to his interest in climate challenges.

Weld supports abortion rights, and he

includes in his campaign message about the acceptance of LGBTQ communities.

Current incumbent Donald J. Trump continues to campaign for a second term.

He believes in maintaining a strong arm on increasing immigration reform. Trump is an avid corporate tax cut supporter and wants to continue to pull back on regulations. He introduced a ban of transgender troops who serve in the military. Trump also greatly opposes Obamacare and wants to introduce a new health care system. He withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accords which aims to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

“After Parkland, unfortunately it took something like that, we’ve seen a huge increase in young people voting and student activism which for me as a teacher is just wonderful, and it gives you hope. It really does,” said Niedringhaus.

“Each vote matters.”

The upcoming primaries will provoke a lot of thoughtful discussion and debate both in our school and out in the community.

We hope seniors will use their vote wisely.

ew teachers. New bathrooms.

New colors. The common saying is that “new is always better.” And, at least for this school, it might be. Student activists are standing up for new ideas; student athletes and artists are redefining our worldview. Our world is not stopping, it is constantly rotating its way around the sun, time is passing by, and suddenly our surroundings are completely different.

Life is going to be filled with many new experiences, people and places.

It’s important that with these new changes, we take action in things that are unacceptable, because now we are the ones who can change it. We have an opportunity to be united in making the world a better place. It’s our turn to affect our surroundings the way we want to. We hope The Royal Banner helps you make informed, conscious decisions.
