Haunted.

The classic definition of “haunted” refers to all those creatures that go bump in the night: bloodsucking vampires, ghosts, and other monsters and entities feared throughout October. With Halloween quickly approaching and Fright Knight: A Haunted Homecoming behind us, The Royal Banner staff wanted to contribute to the horror. However, we chose to not only investigate the quintessentially haunted parts of our school but also delve into a deeper meaning. Dictionary.com defines haunted as: 1. inhabited or frequented by ghosts; 2. preoccupied, as with an emotion, memory, or idea; obsessed; 3.

Disturbed; distressed; worried.

Does our building have a secret pool?

Did someone really die in the math hallway? Is there a ghost that lurks in our halls? This issue takes on these conspiracies and more. We also studied the more metaphorical definition of “haunted”. Allumni discussed with us their homecoming horror stories that disturb them to this day. Teachers and students comment on alcoholic use among students and how we are combatting it. With President Trump’s recent announcement concerning DACA, our community is in a state of distress. Our reporters explored how our school and district are responding.

These are the things that haunt our everyday life, not just the creature that goes bump in the night.

A Tradition

of Superstition

Most students and staff members say they don’t believe in ghosts, but that doesn’t stop the standing tradition of superstition. Stories have passed through students and staff, speculating whether it’s the supernatural or if they’re all just exaggerated tales of electrical failures meant to give our community something to bond over.

Students and staff who have spent a substantial amount of time in the building’s odd hallways know that sometimes strange events occur. The second floor art room’s haunting is one of many rumors that has led to precautionary behavior.

Two custodians, Oscar and Xeng Her,

had their respective encounters in said art room with what they believe to be ghosts.

“I don’t know the full detailed story, only that [Oscar], who was cleaning [the second floor art room] after dark once, swears to God that he saw a figure go through the room and out the two levels of the windows and out to the roof,” said pottery teacher, Sarah Halstead.

“And [Oscar] truly believes that it wasn’t a prank or anything like that; that’s truly in [his] gut.”

After word of Oscar’s run-in spread, custodians, whether they believed in the ghost or not, treated the room differently.

Years later, the custodial staff still rushes to clean that room before dark.

From that art room a private hallway connects to the catwalks above the auditorium. Resting in the rafters, among the catwalks, there is a plastic skeleton. This glorified halloween decoration symbolizes a long standing belief among the members of The Technical Theater Crew that any show could go horribly if they didn’t give the ghost of Harold (the skeleton in the rafters) the attention he desires.

It has become custom to blame any odd occurrences on and around the stage to these spirits. Nicolas Pederson, a Junior in marching band and an actor, spends countless of hours on that side of the school, in and out of the dark. He has a few spooky stories that he and other actors credit to Harold.

“Occasionally the lights in the pit will turn off and on at random times,” Pederson said. “You would be half way through a monologue and suddenly lights would come on underneath you.”

Anna Steere, a junior in The Tech Crew, has spent a lot of time around the stage. She has had a number of technical difficulties but some she’s left with no practical explanation for. Because of the tradition of paying respect to Harold, she’s able to joke that it’s the long rumored ghost’s actions.

“All of the doors were locked, we knew that, and suddenly all of the lights just turned off,” said Steere. “There are five different switches, no one can hit them all at the same time. It was kind of sketchy.”

Whether you believe these legends or

not, they connect us with the current and previous student bodies. Before you graduate, spend some time in the odd hallways and attempt to answer a question that years of students and staff, including Halstead, have asked: “Is it the very bad wiring in Fairview or is it something else?”

Was the Building a Former Prison?

Our school was built by a man who also built prisons, right? That’s what the theories say.

When talking to students, the most common theory that people knew of was that the architect of the school, Hobart D. Wagener Associates, also designed prisons.

“Oh yeah,” said Blaine Biediger, junior. “[I’ve] heard that one before” And this isn’t a new theory.

“I remember hearing that it was a former prison.”

“I remember hearing that it was a former prison,” said Terry Bradley, a teacher and graduate of the class of 1976 “and that’s why it was built like a fortress the way that it was.”

So far, no evidence has supported this theory and there is no record of anything related to the myth.

“That’s a myth. Yeah, [there is] no proof he did,” said Principal Don Stensrud, “When you look at the older sections the ones with the gun-turret windows and a lack of windows in the building the rumor was that, you know, [they look like] prison windows. A lot of it was based on the fact that we didn’t have the glass technology in 1970 to withstand the winds up here.”

Is the Art Room Haunted?

While so far nothing has been proven, things have happened at the school in the past.

Is There a Swimming Pool?

Now, you may have heard theories about there being a basement. Maybe you’ve heard that this basement has a pool in it.

“I do remember hearing as a freshman here,” said Bradley “that there was a swimming pool underneath the basketball court.”

However, this is also false.

“There is not an official basement. There are crawl spaces,” said Stensrud. “[There is a] crawl space [that] goes [under] the entire 800 floor.

There’s also a crawl space under the 600 and the 400 [halls], for most of it. 200 is slab and the student center is also slab. There’s a big crawl space under the gym. That’s the biggest of them all over there. And you can actually walk into that one.”

Has a Teacher Died Here?

“There was a teacher who died at the bottom of the ramp,” said Billington.

Barbara Carlson, a language arts teacher in the 1970s and 80s died at Fairview in 1982 of an aneurysm acording to the 1983 “Lance”.

“She had a heart attack in the halls of Fairview High School.”

“She had a heart attack in the halls of Fairview High School,” said teacher Tracy Brennan “So that’s one reason why I work part-time instead of full-time...because I don’t want to die from a heart attack in the hallways of Fairview High School. So she’s been an inspiration for me in a different sort of way,” Carlson’s family started scholarship here in honor of her and all of her years of teaching.

“She was...a much-loved teacher who had been here I think for like 25 or 30 years. She worked here a long time, even before Fairview was Fairview here,” said Brennan.

Club Spotlight:

Humans vs Zombies

Coming into its twelfth year at Fairview, the Humans versus Zombies club continues to provide a fun, active and stress-relieving community for students. One of the only high school HVZ clubs in the country, the group meets every Wednesday after school to play a version of extreme tag mixed with a video game.

“The simple way I always put it is zombie tag with Nerf,” said senior Brendan Abernathy, president of the club. “After school, we run around with Nerf blasters and fight in the halls for whether humans or zombies will win.”

The game, though it has many variations, is won either when the zombies infect every human by hitting them with a Nerf dart, or if humans are able to survive the entire game without getting infected.

When the idea was originally proposed by student Markus Leben twelve years ago, Principal Don Stensrud was enthusiastic about the club as way to get students to exercise while also having fun.

“The idea is if we’re all going to go home and play video games and shoot zombies anyway, we might as well just exercise [and]

have fun,” said Abernathy.

HVZ provides a much-needed break in the busy schedule of a typical high school student.

“You will learn the halls, and you will learn them quickly.”

“I like it because it’s sort of just something enjoyable to do after a long day of school, [to] just relax, have fun,” Abernathy said. “I’ve always said it’s a great thing to do if you’re new to the school, because you will learn the halls, and you will learn them quickly.”

Additionally, the game changes each week, so no two games are exactly the same.

“It’s exciting because we do different game types and different types of zombies every week,” said junior Erin Medler. “It’s a different experience most of the time.”

HVZ club sponsor and math teacher Annabelle Merg also enjoys seeing students participating in a fun activity outside of school.

“I really do like this club a lot,” said Merg. “Especially as a core academic teacher, [I like] seeing students outside of the classroom… being a little more loose than they are in class, and seeing some of those personalities come out.”

place where they can find other students with similar interests to themselves.

In a school of over 2,000 students, HZV allows many kids to find a place where feel like they belong.

“I think it’s just a really special group of people that’s willing to come here and chase each other around with Nerf blasters,” said Medler.

Abernathy said that many of the students in the club describe themselves as “nerds,” though in a positive connotation.

“Everyone’s a nerd about something.”

“We’re all nerds. It’s a fine label for me,” said Abernathy. “For me, a nerd is someone who enjoys something. Everyone’s a nerd about something.”

Medler added, “We’re just nerds about running around with Nerf blasters, I guess.”

Homecomings Past

From being stuck in an elevator, to heartbreak, to ugly dresses, to fun dances or going bowling, teachers who also attended high school here have no shortage of stories to tell of their own Homecoming experiences.

Homecoming is a classic tradition that dates back to a time when the school was located on Baseline, where Platte Middle School is now.

Compared from then to now, homecoming week hasn’t changed too much. Everyone still attends the homecoming football game decked out in red and white and dresses up in their most outrageous clothes for spirit days, the girls don their gowns and the guys their suits, and everyone packs into the student center to bust a move.

Janice Vlachos, choir teacher, described her senior year homecoming dress.

“Such an ugly turquoise silk dress with a high collar, and [it] was knee length, just really ugly,” said Vlachos. “But I remember at the time thinking it looked really good.”

Ugly dresses aren’t the only things that haunt the teach-

ers at Fairview. Heartbreak was big on the list as well.

Zachary Strand, choir teacher, said he “definitely had one homecoming with full on heartbreak, so that was fun. So that was a rough year.”

Nicholson said, “we got in the elevator in the parking garage to drive back to the dance, then all the power in the parking lot went out and we were stuck there for like three hours.” When her group of friends got back to school they ran inside and danced to like two songs, and then they turned on the lights, and said homecoming was over.

Not everyone is drawn to the dancing aspect of homecoming.

Up untill the year ‘84, people of the age of 18 could leagaly buy and consum alchol of 3.5% (Usually Beer).

“My junior year, I didn’t go to homecoming,” said Vlachos. “I went with a group of friends bowling and it was way more fun.”

Strand attended the dance all four years, and said that the whole week of homecoming was “just a good experience.”

Strand, when he attended the dances, would goof off with his friends and do “dances from the musical to whatever song was playing.

So we would change it up, and then remix our beats, especially ‘Footloose,’ because ‘Footloose’ had a lot of choreography that was adaptable,” Strand said. “We would do ridiculous stuff like that, or ball room dance to rap, on the side and just the silliness of that. It started with about ten of us the first year, and grew to, like, thirty or forty of us.”

Homecoming has always been a fun tradition and always will be. It is a great time to hang out with old friends or make some new ones.

Vlachos said, “I … don’t remember it being very fancy, I just remember it being really fun.”

Recently, a group of students known as the Student Leadership Council have taken the initiative to redefine our culture to encourage leadership and reflect more positive values and behaviors.

Seniors Emily Bechtel, Eva Cursley and juniors Laura Ruby and Leah Martinez came up with the initiative, called “Take Back the Knight”.

While sobriety is only a small portion of the campaign, Athletic Director Terrin Kelly said in reference to alcohol consumption, that “something [needed] to happen.”

Kelly is one of the administra-

tors involved in the campaign, and said that based on the feedback from other administrators, the problem with alcohol consumption at school events has worsened.

“We’ve had more suspensions and we’ve had more incidents of alcohol usage at school events,” Kelly said.

One aim of “Take Back the Knight” is to reconstruct our culture.

“I was hoping to get a lot of people involved ... and recreate a culture that wasn’t so focused on negativity and more about positivity,” Bechtel said. “I really wanted to come up with a plan [...] so people could redefine culture in a way that was honest and kind, and so that we don’t have so much drinking.”

“The goal of the ‘Take

Back the Knight’s initiative is mostly to get people that aren’t used to being leaders involved in the leadership community,” Bechtel said.

The Royal Banner conducted an anonymous survey of 281 students about the use of alcohol within the student body.

“Instead of saying that drinking is a problem, I think we should educate students, especially underclassmen, on how to act if put in dangerous situations,” a senior said in the survey.

“Educating them is not condoning the behavior, it’s possibly saving a life or preventing an accident.”

Dean of Students Jim Lefebvre commented on the “Take Back the Knight” initiative, “We can’t do something that we make at the administration level, it has got to be organic, it has got to be from [the students].”

Students’ responses to the anonymous survey about the presence of alcohol varied.

27% of the students survyed said that they did not think that drinking was part of the culture, while 43% said it was. 72% of students surveyed said that drinking was not a problem.

Students also shared different beliefs about how drinking reflects upon the school.

One student said that “[Drinking is] a part of the high school experience, it doesn’t reflect on Fairview badly because of it.”

Another senior said in the survey that “drinking on school campus, or at school events shows a lack of respect towards faculty and other students because it is a distraction in our shared learning environment.”

Bechtel’s initial take on “Take Back the Knight” was a campaign based solely upon sobriety, but has grown to

encompass the overall culture.

“Sobriety is definitely a big piece of it because we do want to increase sober attendance to events,” Bechtel said.

According to Kelly, at this year’s Boulder-Fairview football game, there were a total of nine students, from both high schools, who received suspensions due to intoxication.

“It’s just another signal that something has to happen,” Kelly said.

However, some students believe that it is not necessary to attempt to change the behavior.

“Let teens be teens. Many of us are expected to be adults in less than a year and all of this coddling from the administration [and] freshman parents is not a productive way to enter into adulthood,” said an anonymous response to the survey. “How are we expected to be successful with this blanket-like environ-

ment?”

In response to the survey, a senior acknowledges that students will never stop drinking completely, but an effort can still be made to change the behavior.

“Encouraging kids to take care of each other, offering safe environments to let loose and destress (dances and sporting events), and creating a supportive environment will absolutely help the behavior at Fairview,” the student said.

However, as stated before, “Take Back the Knight” isn’t just about sobriety.

“The real goal of Take Back the Knight [is] to redefine the Fairview Community ... and create space so that everyone can be a leader,” Bechtel said.

A key component of the campaign is that it is stems from the student body. “[Take Back the Knight] feels like more of a community bond and almost like a movement rather than a ‘you have to do this’ kind of thing, which I think that students respond to better,” Bechtel said.

As Kelly said, “I think sometimes ... when you have someone that is dictating rules, it’s less likely to be accepted then if that movement comes from the people it impacts the most.”

The Haunting Effect of the DACA Decision

During the past few weeks there have been heated debates about a program instituted under the Obama administration in 2012 named DACA as well as the plans surrounding its future.

It is BVSD policy that the district and its schools do not ask about the immigration status of students, their parents, or their gaurdians.

DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a program that grants individuals who were brought to the country as minors a renewable two-year waiver to protect them from being deported, and a valid

On the afternoon of September 5th, President Donald Trump announced his plans to end the program. On this same morning, the new BVSD superintendent Dr. Cynthia Stevenson released an email addressing his plan, and how it could impact BVSD families and students.

“We understand the fear and uncertainty that the decision to rescind DACA will have on some families within our school district. I want everyone to know that nothing has changed in BVSD,” wrote Stevenson in her email.

As mentioned in her statement, this uncertainty caused lots of fear and anxiety among BVSD families.

“We need to have our voices heard.”

“I think that we’re going to be ... a sanctuary school. We are not under any obligation to work with ICE or immigration,” said Principal Don Stensrud.

“Children have a constitutional right to have equal access to education regardless of their immigration status or their parents’ status and we never ask for a student’s citizenship or immigration status,” wrote Stevenson.

Even though education is not a fundamental right by the Constitution, the equal protection clause in the 14th amendment says that when a state creates a public school system, no child living in that state can be denied equal right to be enrolled in that school system.

The decision to rescind this program could have a haunting effect on some families as their future is now as not as certain as it once was.

DACA is not the only program of its kind. There is another program named DAPA or Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and lawful permanent residents. This granted persons who had lived in the US since 2010 and were undocumented immigrants with children a waiver of protection from being deported and a three-year work permit.

“When midterms hit next year [we’re] going to have 500 600 voters,” said Stensrud.

“They represent their families other students and themselves. We need to have our voices heard.” said Stensrud “We remain just as committed today as we were yesterday to educating each and every student in Boulder Valley School District,” said Stevenson.
