LACROSSE TALK Womens lacrosse comes to Fairview

019 will be the inaugural season for the new Fairview women’s lacrosse team. After years of playing as part of the district-wide Centaurus team, Fairview lacrosse women will finally get to wear the Knights’ red and black.

Lacrosse, called “the Creator’s game”

by Native Americans, is one of the fastest growing youth, high school and college team sports in the country. As more traditional sports struggle to attract new players, lacrosse participation numbers go up annually.

Women’s lacrosse is especially popular right now and according to US Lacrosse, the national governing body of the game, participation in girl’s high school lacrosse rose from 65,244 in 2006 to 140,944 in 2017.

It was only a matter of time until Fairview High School would have its own program.

First year Head Coach, Kelsey Sheridan, will be in the unique position of starting a program mostly from scratch.

Sheridan’s playing and coaching careers are quite extensive. She was a two-time all-Atlantic Ten defender at UMass, and currently plays for the Baltimore Brave of the Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL), and also trains with the US National Team.

Her coaching career began at Amherst College where she was the defensive coordinator, and then prior to coming to Colorado, she was assistant coach at George Mason University where she again mentored the team’s defensive core.

Coach Sheridan is excited to give a preview of the Knights’ upcoming season.

What are you most excited about for the inaugural season?

KS: I'm excited to see the girls play games.

I've only ever seen them play against each other so I'm excited to see them in games competing hard and celebrating goals.

What are your goals for the first year?

KS: The goal for the first year is to take it one day at a time. We aren't thinking ahead.

Each day we are working hard and chipping away to get better and better.

Are there players from other schools playing for Fairview or is it all Fairview students?

KS: Our team is the only girls lacrosse program in the district so the players are from all over Boulder Valley and some players are out of district because their district doesn't have a team.

Can someone with no experience tryout? Will they pick the game up quickly?

KS: All players with no experience are welcome to join! Most new players play other sports so they are able to transfer a lot of their skills from that sport to lacrosse.

Where will the home games be played?

KS: Platt Middle School.

How should we expect a Kelsey Sheridan team to play the game?

KS: The team is going to play fast but composed. We want to push the tempo of the game. We have a lot of speed and we want to capitalize on that.

How can the Fairview students support the team?

KS: Fairview students can support the team by coming and cheering us on at our home games. We open the season on March 9th at Platt MS against George Washington.

SPRING INTO ACTION Previewing this year's spring sports

Girls Lacrosse With a new change, it will be interesting to see how the season plays out for the girls.

In previous seasons, the team combined with Centaurus High School’s BVSD-wide program. But for the first time this season, Fairview has its own girls lacrosse team.

So far the move has certainly come with its hiccups, as team practice field is all the way at Platt Middle School and the field doesn’t have lights, making practice particularly difficult in the early spring daylight. However, the team is still eager to make a splash this year under new head coach Kelsey Sheridan.

“Our team is awesome this year we’re really excited,” said senior Sammy Denninger. “Our new head coach is awesome and she’s going to push us hard in order to get us in shape and where we need to be.”

The girls’ season kicks off March 11, when they’ll take on a tough opponent in Air Academy. To read more about the new girls lacrosse team, check out the story on page three!

Baseball What a way to hit off the spring sports.

With a rough season last year, the team expects to come back with a bang this year.

“We have a lot of returning players, and we have a very strong senior class... all the dudes are really close,” said junior David Hopkins.

With a team built on brotherhood, great things are sure to turn out for the team this season. Unfortunately there were some setbacks that occurred last spring that led to a losing season. The team went 5-7 in league last year, but their combined experience is bound to help them improve this year.

“We know what’s coming and what to expect. We’re more prepared,” said sophomore Greysen Carter.

“We’re just stepping up our mentality, we’re going to just be competitive every game,” said Hopkins. “No ‘I’ moves, everyone’s going to be playing for the team, playing for each other this year, so I’m really excited for that.”

Girls Soccer Despite graduating seven seniors last year and a undergoing a coaching change, the girls soccer team is optimistic about the upcoming season and hope to improve upon last season’s round of 16 defeat.

“With four seniors leading the way and a strong core of returning players the Knights look to be an exciting [team] in the Front Range league,” says new head coach Steve Griggs.

The girls went 13-3 last season, losing to Fort Collins in the postseason. Seniors Brooke Berdan and Sarina Russ are rejoining the team after playing club last season, and are looking forward to leading the team along with seniors Emma Carter and Talia Hatami.

“The team’s better than we ever have been,” said Carter. “We have a really strong senior class, and we’re just a big group of best friends so I’m really excited to see what happens.”

Girls Golf Hoping to improve after failing to finish in the top 15 in tournament play this year, the Girls Golf team is looking forward to the season.

Junior Anna Bergman said, “The coaches and girls are so much fun, I finish every school day looking forward to getting on the range.”

The girls have qualified for state for the last 6 years under their experienced coach John Zerwin, and hope to keep that streak alive this year.

Girls Tennis Last season was challenging for the girls squad, as they went 2-8 in the regular season, including an 0-7 record in league play.

However, the season ended on a high note after the team rallied to finish third overall in the Front Range League Tournament. Last year’s strong finish brings plenty of reason for optimism this year, namely because of the performances of the team’s underclassmen in the the league tournament.

Natalie Stone and Alexis Bernthal, both freshmen last year, finished runner-up and first in No. one and No. two singles respectively. The girls on this year’s squad have experience and talent, which should make them very fun to watch.

“We work really well together,” said senior Skylar Cotter. “We communicate and we just have fun which makes everything a lot easier.”

Boys Swimming/Dive The boys swim team ultimately came up short in the 5A state meet last year, finishing in 24th place overall. However, with a young roster ready to prove themselves under new head coach Joey Pedraza, a former Division I swimmer at the University of Florida, the boys are ready to make a strong run for state this year. When senior Joe Casebolt described the main area of improvement for the team this year, one word came up: consistency.

“Just more kids showing up to practice because it’s an everyday grind. If you miss a couple days it really counts,” said Casebolt. “So, just getting on the grind and working for it. That’s what we’re all about.”

With a senior class eager to instill a culture of hard work and dedication and a group ready to perform under their new head coach, keep an eye out for the boys this spring.

Track and Field Let’s jump right into it. The girls squad certainly headlined the program last year, finishing 15th in the 5A state championship while the boys finished 42nd. However, this year there is plenty for both teams to be excited about as many star athletes return to the track.

The girls placed first in 19 different events, and they’re ready to exceed that number this year with several key athletes returning.

Girls to watch are Marlena Preigh, Emily Hopkins, Carina Kehoe, Vanessa Haggans, Caroline Harmon, Stella Noble and Shannon Kenny.

Additionally, the boys are eager to build on their 18 first place finishes last year. Senior Cooper Harmon is looking forward to the season.

“I’d like to shout out my sponsor, Aquafina,” he said. “I’d like to thank them for supporting me even though I was hurt last season and I’m just glad I have another season under my belt.”

Boys Lacrosse The lacrosse team had an up and down season last year, beginning with five straight losses but heating up in the second half to finish 6-9 overall on the season. But many of those tough stretches were likely rooted in inexperience.

The team’s top four scorers and top five assist leaders were all in the junior class or lower. This could be a sign of big things to come in 2019, as the Knights have retained most of their players who’ve had a full year to reflect and improve.

They certainly have much to prove this year, but with an experienced roster and a strong late-season finish to build off of, this team could be dangerous. Their season begins at Cherokee Trail on March 13.

WHAT ARE YOUR SUMMER PLANS? Explore the option to travel the world with friends

S

tudents are looking for something to occupy their summer, and traveling the world is a good option.Rikki Keiser, a Spanish teacher, offers students the opportunity to travel with her and a group of leaders and other students in activity-filled adventures around the globe.

This summer she is leading a trip to Costa Rica and Panama, and next summer Australia, New Zealand and The Cook Islands.

Typically, there are around 25-35 students and 5-10 adults that go on each trip.

The company that manages the trips is called EF (Education First). According to the EF website, their primary goal is to “combine language training with cultural exchange, academic achievement and educational travel to deliver courses and programs that transform dreams into international opportunities.”

All of the tours are filled with adventures specialized to each area. For example, on the Costa Rica and Panama trip, the group will be snorkeling, kayaking, ziplining and white water rafting, but in Spain, they toured cathedrals and museums.

Keiser has been traveling the world every year with EF since she was nine, as her father was also a Spanish teacher and has led 37 of these tours.

“Peru is my favorite country in the entire world … it’s just fascinating, the people the culture, I love it,” said Keiser.

Mackenzie Grace, junior, has been on three trips with EF to Spain, Costa Rica and Nicaragua and Ecuador. She is also going to attend the trip to China.

“I really like to see other cultures and ex-

perience other parts of the world because it’s so different from what we have in the United States but especially in Boulder, and just getting to experience what their life is like and having them share their culture with us,” said Grace.

Keiser believes that what a student gets out of a trip is a personalized.

“What you get out of these trips and what someone else gets out of them can be totally different, I think the biggest thing is just a sense of independence,” said Keiser.

“It’s just a totally different travel experience when you’re traveling with your family versus when you’re traveling with 20 of your friends or people you don’t even know from high school. You just get exposure to the world in completely different ways that you would have never gotten otherwise.”

Grace loves the trips because she gets to meet new people, become close friends with the people that she travels with and be immersed in a different language.

The length of the trips vary depending on the destinations. The tour to Costa Rica and Panama is nine days, slightly shorter than usual because the flight is not as long as other trips. The trip to Australia, New Zealand and the Cook Islands is twelve days. Trips typically occur in the first weeks of June, with the exception of destinations that have opposite seasons as the U.S., such as Australia, because the goal is to get the warmest weather possible.

Keiser said that EF is very good about managing the group’s security, as they do not allow travel to any countries that are on the international travel watch list and are re-

liable about providing help if there is trouble when the group is already in the country.

Keiser also has her own set of regulations to assure safety, such as no drinking or drugs.

“The biggest thing for me though, I would say, would be kids traveling in groups, because there’s always safety in numbers,” said Keiser. “Kids never go anywhere in groups less than four, one of them will at least always have a cell phone, they have my cell phone number they know the lay of the land a little bit just because we’ve been touring around that place all day.”

“It’s something that you’ll remember for your whole life.”

Grace has some words of advice for those who are looking for an adventure to occupy their summer: “Definitely go on [the trips]. It’s something that you’ll remember for your whole life, and it’s just an amazing experience, so go.”

SAFE2TELL... IS IT USED How exactly is Safe2Tell being used? Is it achieving its goal?

afe2Tell is an anonymous tip line for students to report bullying, harassment and other occurrences that may be harmful to themselves or others.

According to the Safe2Tell website, the mission is to “ensure that every Colorado student, parent, teacher and community member has access to a safe and anonymous way to report any concerns to their safety or the safety of others, with a focus on early intervention and prevention through awareness and education.”

This statement certainly sounds great, and it is only intended to do good things for the community. However, do we use Safe2Tell to prevent harm or do we use it to report on each other?

If students used Safe2Tell to report something that is directly affecting or hurting them, then sure, I would support it. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case.

I have had many friends fall victim to this system of punishment, leading me to believe that it does more harm than good.

Senior Alex Kang said, “It’s your word against the word of someone you most likely don’t know, and that person tends to get the benefit of the doubt.”

The unreliability of Safe2Tell’s method raises the question of whether the school should be allowed to pursue an anonymous tip about a student.

When a student is reported through Safe-

2Tell, every administrator statewide has to follow the same protocol, according to assistant principal Ross Sutter. The tip first goes to the police who are in the jurisdiction of the school, and then the school is notified.

No tip goes unpursued. The school, by state law, has to investigate every tip through Safe2Tell.

The school has to do this for two reasons, said Sutter. The first reason is so the school doesn’t get sued if the tip is real and they fail to act on it. The second is to keep the students safe from harmful people or messages.

According to Sutter, the school can’t just suspend a student based off of suspicion, but they can issue suspensions based off of one’s appearance and how they act. If a student looks like they are high, the school does not need to have any evidence of this.

If a student seems drunk, the school doesn’t need to perform a breathalyzer test. They can simply proceed to suspend you for either three or five days… if it is your first

If you don’t take the class, you are looking at a five day suspension. However, for your second offense, you are looking at two weeks out of school. Does this seem reasonable if you only appear high?

The answer is no.

I was in court on Feb. 27, 2019 for a speeding ticket, and the justice system there is more reasonable. I was caught speeding 20+ mph over the limit and was facing a 6-point ticket. However, after pleading my case with a prosecutor, they lowered it to 2 points with the option of taking a class so I can learn about the dangers of speeding. What is different from the school is that I was able to give the prosecutors my side of the story and they greatly lowered my punishment.

Here, you will be punished no matter what your story is. According to Sutter it is a district policy that students under the influence receive an automatic suspension.

Safe2Tell should not be used to report events that aren’t directly harmful to a student. Vaping is harmful, but if you’re washing your hands in the bathroom, does someone vaping in the stall really harm you?

We, as a school, should use this resource to report bullies, kids who may hurt themselves or students who are blatantly disregarding the authority of teachers or students.

The whole point of Safe2Tell is to prevent one from harming others and themselves, so we should stop calling in kids who are vaping because that ultimately will just make the bigger issues of bullying and self harm seem smaller.

Reviewing the newest album by pop star hit Ariana Grande

R

ecorded just months after the release of her previous project, Sweetener, Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next” captures the pop singer in an emotionally messy place. Grande’s ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, had recently died of an overdose, and alongside dealing with her own emotions about his death, Miller fans unfairly blamed Grande for his passing. Around the same time, Grande split with her fiance, actor and comedian Pete Davidson.

The album features a number of tracks dedicated to the exploration of her mindstate at the time of recording. Opener “imagine” finds Grande hoping for a perfect, impossible relationship, perhaps combining the best parts of past relationships and holding on to none of the bad. Stale lyrics like “get in the car like skrrt” and “drip-drip-dripped in gold” take away from the song, but her vocal performance on the string-heavy outro balances things out. Lead single “thank u, next” focuses on Grande’s growth and development after past relationships, name dropping Big Sean and Davidson in the first verse, among others. She addresses her relationship with Mac Miller, with the line “wish I could say thank you to Malcom/‘cause he was an angel” acknowledging how difficult his death was for her. “fake smile” sees Grande refusing to hide her emotions over a minimalist beat sampling Wendy Rene’s 1964 soul classic “After Laughter (Comes Tears)”. The production is solid but the paint-by-numbers lyrics seem like they’re actively trying to avoid originality.

“Grande is irritatingly nasally, sounding like she’s singing with a bleeding nose.”

It wouldn’t be an Ariana Grande album without some “girl power”-type anthems, and thank u, next delivers. Fan-favorite “7 rings” features her unabashedly bragging about diamonds, cars, and houses to the melody of “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music.” The repeated “I want it/I got it” is catchy, but otherwise, the track isn’t bringing anything interesting to the table. “bloodline” is a much more successful example, with jazzy, dense production and a killer hook from Grande making it one of the most memorable songs on the album.

The theme of female independence is present in the song, with Grande describing a friends-with-benefits relationship that she

won’t let become anything greater.

The instrumentals on “thank u, next” vary in terms of quality, but are coherent throughout the album. Every song is very cleanly mixed, without sounding sterile or lifeless. A club banger song like “bad idea” contrasts strongly with the more ambient “ghostin,”, but both sound like they belong on the same album. “in my head” is relatively boring, with an uncreative beat and a groaning background sample, only redeemed by Grande’s excellent vocals. But while she manages to impress on a lot of the album, on some songs, Grande is irritatingly nasally, sounding like she’s singing with a bleeding nose.

Grande is at her best when she’s over creating beats and being true to herself, rather than marketing herself as a product for the masses to enjoy, and “thank u, next” has a moderate amount of both. Nonetheless, it’s a decent addition to her discography and a time capsule of late 2010s-era pop.

IB LA 12 teachers Karen Nieb and Tracy Brennan critique “thank u, next”

ess than six months since her fourth studio album, Ariana Grande released a record-breaking song titled “thank u, next.” Amongst the younger population, this song rose to popularity very quickly.

This is probably because this generation has no taste in music, and of the music we do listen to, we don’t necessarily look for a deeper meaning in songs.

But the two IB Language Arts 12 teachers, Karen Nieb and Tracy Brennan, have something else to say about the song.

Every fall, Brennan and Nieb teach their students how to properly analyze a poem by Derek Walcott using diction, imagery, syntax, structure and tone. This prepares their students for the IB oral commentary that Nieb and Brennan will record and grade later in the year.

We asked them to do an oral commentary on “thank u, next.”

“I would speak to structure first,” said Nieb. “The mirror from ‘one taught me love, one taught me patience,’ there she is referring to them, but then recognizing that she is the one who had to deal with all of [it], she was the one responsible for her response to what is going on.”

So far so good. The way one of today’s biggest pop singers structures her songs seemed to impress our hard-to-impress

teachers.

The message of the song rang clear with the teachers as well, who were impressed with the overall message of “okay I’m over it and still awesome.”

“The way we read it, the way we interpreted it was that she needed to take care of herself first,” said Brennan. “And she is glad that all these guys are her exes and that she is gonna take care of her own issues and her own problems first.”

Although the structure and message seemed to resonate well enough with the two teachers, the problem came with Grande’s word choice.

The song has its fair share of F and S bombs...

“It’s not the highest register ever of diction.”

“Certainly she is using a colloquial diction,” said Nieb said on the cursing.

She was quickly followed by Brennan, “it’s not the highest register ever of diction.”

So what gives the song its appeal? Why is it so well received?

“She is showing herself as a strong woman

making strong choices, and she doesn’t rely on a man to uphold her public image,” said Brennan.

Nieb added, “the fact that she is telling a story, we get caught up in other people’s stories, which is why it is also effective how she refers to herself in the third person.”

Though their opinions on the song may be more sophisticated than our own, and they were able to analyze the song deeper than any of us were able to, the conclusions they came to were not so different from our own.

“There is a message underneath some of the language and the repetitions,” Brennan said.

If their analysis of the song’s lyrics was not enough for you, fear not. Both teachers went the extra mile and watched the music video for the song as well.

“She was quite sensual, she was like someone of out Player’s,” Brennan said about the video, referring to Tom Stoppard’s overtly sexual character the Player, in his play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.”

“She wasn’t putting it out there that she was totally off-limits to guys,” said Brennan.

However when it comes to listening to the rest of the album, thanks to a surplus of papers to grade that come with the IB curriculum, I don’t think they will be listening to it in the upcoming months.

Brennan said, “I’m probably not going to rush out and buy it.”

Bernie Sanders Probably the most well known figure on this list, Bernie Sanders had an unsuccessful run for President in 2016, losing to Hillary Clinton. Sanders, who serves as Senior Senator for Vermont, is well liked by many progressives.

However, Sanders has struggled to find an audience in African American and Latino communities, which make up a significant portion of the progressive demographic. His campaign resides on a platform of Medicaid for all and free college tuition, directly appealing to many concerns of younger voters. Many political analysts consider Sanders to be the frontrunner for the primary race, at least for the time being.

Kamala Harris “She...has a high chance of winning the nomination due to her hardline stance on many progressive issues.”

Kamala Harris, the former Attorney General and current Senator of California, is considered another top candidate in the running for the 2020 election. Senator Harris strongly supports gun control and abortion and has co-sponsored Bernie Sanders’ “Medicare For All” bill.

Harris has plenty of support from women’s groups and minority communities.

She, along with several others on this list, has a high chance of winning the nomination due to her hard-line stance on many progressive issues. It’s likely that the coming primaries will focus on further-left progressives, considering how motivated the Democrats’ base is at the moment.

OPINION AND POLITICS

Elizabeth Warren Another well known Senator, Elizabeth Warren is popular among young progressives, appealing to many for her focus on the environment and corruption.

Considered by most pundits to be a early contender for the 2020 election even immediately after the 2016 election, Warren announced her campaign to mixed reactions throughout the political spectrum. Recently, she has garnered controversy for a DNA test she took, which she said proved her long standing claim that she was of Native American descent.

Regardless, her policies and critique of President Trump have earned praise from hard-line Democrats, making her a solid pick for the nominee.

Amy Klobuchar is currently a 3rd term U.S. Senator for Minnesota. Klobuchar has one of the most impressive legislative resumes, having sponsored and co-sponsored a total of 111 pieces of legislation during her Senate career, meaning voters have a lot information regarding her stances on policy. However, Klobuchar has drawn criticism from climate change advocacy groups over recent weeks for her refusal to support Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s “Green New Deal” bill and has been rebuked after reports of her mistreatment of campaign staff caused a stir in the media. Klobuchar has the lowest chance of winning the nomination of anyone on the list of candidates.
