ADVENTURE.

The word itself promises excitement, thrill and satisfaction. It offers new, enriching experiences, and quenches the basic desire for good, plain fun. As with every year, the distant promise of a summer full of freedom and adventure has propelled us through this school year from the moment we first walked through the doors in August. Whether it be the exciting prospects of college, a trip abroad or exploring the opportunities here in our very own city, we are all ready to feel the sun on our faces and the sense of choice and independence that inevitabley comes with the conclusion of a school year.

We reflect on stories of past experiences studying abroad, and share our hopes for future adventures to cross off of our bucket-lists.

Not only students anticipate the excitement and freedom of summer; this year, we say goodbye to several wonderful staff-members who are ready to embark on well-deserved adventures of their own.

And, of course, the seniors, who have been waiting for four years for a fresh start, for the chance to step out into the world on their and create their own stories. They, more than anyone else, are ready for whatever adventures the future may bring.

We look forward to an adventure of our own as the new EICs for the 2018-2019 school year.

CURING SENIORITIS Senioritis has become a pressing issue across the school and desperately needs a cure. I set out to find a solution through high-quality investigative journalism

BY NOAH FINER | HUMOR “They’ll just make everyone hate school even more,” said junior Sabrina Lasica.

Though Lasica’s comment may seem like criticism, she is most likely suffering from the negative side effects of the other seniors around school with senioritis, and meant to say the exact opposite of that. The same situation is probably true for the rest of the students I interviewed.

Another way to fuel the seniors with massive motivation is to send them possibly fake letters from their dream colleges rescinding them.

“I think it would be funny to see people’s reactions. I would feel bad but not bad enough,” said senior Jillian Shively.

As Shively is already in support of this idea, who wouldn’t be (other than the seniors who would receive these letters)?

School Board officials will vote on May 8th to change regulation to allow for security cameras in common areas (e.g. hallways, entrances and exits) of schools and will vote in the future whether or not to appropriate $1.3 million to their implementation in all BVSD high schools.

The existing regulation (BVSD Superintendent Regulation ECA-R) only allows for video surveillance equipment to be “installed on outside grounds or in areas inside district buildings where students are not permitted,” and prohibits the use of concealed cameras. The proposed regulation allows for security cameras to be installed in “entrances, exits, lobbies, hallways, administrative office areas, stairwells, cafeterias, and other common areas.”

According to Principal Don Stensrud, the existing exterior security cameras will already be upgraded and increased in number through the Bond Program.

A unanimous recommendation of high

school principals is what prompted the BVSD School Board to consider this change. In addition to school principals, a significant number of other school officials, police officers and community members have advocated this change because they feel that it improves school security. Out of the 10 largest school districts in Colorado, BVSD is the only one that prohibits the use of interior security cameras.

In instances such as vandalism, stolen items and bullying, they argue that surveillance systems would help track down the perpetrators of such acts more efficiently.

The school administration would be able to view actual event footage instead of depending on second-hand accounts.

“If you have cameras in the student center, you could see the kids breaking into lockers. And all of a sudden, your stuff becomes safer,” said Stensrud.

Some question the necessity of security cameras in an environment such as Fairview’s, where acts of bullying, vandalism and stealing are less prevalent than they do at other schools.

“Fairview isn’t the place where the security cameras are absolutely vital,” said Stas Irisov, junior. “I don’t think that implementing security cameras on the inside [...] gives enough of a benefit to give enough reason for us to spend that amount of money, that could be spent in a variety of other ways.”

There are about 25-30 incidents each year of vandalism and stealing, the majority of which are cases in which the perpetrators are not able to be found, according to Dean of Students Jim Lefebvre.

In addition to this, cameras would be useful in potential security incidents.

“We spend a lot of time on these investigations, as you might know,” said Lefebvre.

“We have to talk to a lot of people [...]. And if I had a camera, and I could look, and I knew that [the incident] happened in and around this time, I could pinpoint it and it would take me a fraction of the time we currently spend.”

In cases of an active situation within the school, first responders and security officials would be able to determine the location and description of the threat.

“The addition of cameras in common areas of the school would provide security and first responders with accurate information concerning the location and description of an active threat,” said Sheriff Joe Pelle of Boulder County, in a letter to the BVSD School Board.

According to Stensrud and School Board member Kathy Gebhardt, the security camera footage will only be viewed in reference to a specific incident or complaint, on an ad-hoc basis. School officials will not actively monitor camera footage.

“We’re not looking at it as a ‘gotcha’ mentality,” said Stensrud.

Some people have concerns about potential student privacy violations. According to Gebhardt and School Board member Tina Marquis, School Board member Shelly Benford has raised concerns over the installation of interior cameras. As of press time, Benford had not responded to The Royal Banner’s interview request.

However, some of the proponents of interior video surveillance systems argue that interior security cameras are a logical step from the already existing exterior security cameras.

“As long as it’s limited to the hallways, and we’re not doing audio recording, I’m not sure how different it is anymore to an exterior camera,” said Marquis.

Both Marquis and Gebhardt said that most community feedback they have received has been in support of interior security cameras. “[Security cameras] would feel a little weird, I think, at first,” said Riley Maitland, junior. “But everyone would just ignore them over time.”

STAFF RETIREMENTS Three staff members say goodbye to the school they love

Sharyn Corson has worked at Fairview for 17 years, since 2001. Originally, Corson worked in the attendance offices at Fairview before joining the counseling staff.

“I really like the student contact,” said Corson. “It was more [oriented] to my sensibilities.”

When starting at Fairview, Corson had children who went to Boulder High.

“I had to be careful to say ‘Fairview won the game’ instead of ‘we won the game’ and align myself more with Boulder until [they] graduated,” said Corson.

Corson will miss Fairview and its students.

“You high school kids are pretty awesome,” she said. “You can be frustrating, but that’s just a learning experience for people.”

Corson will also miss organizing events for the volunteers in the Counseling and Career Center.

She said, “I love working with our volunteers in the CCC, and we would do a lunch every year to thank them. That is always a highlight.”

Besides that, Corson had trouble picking a favorite thing about Fairview.

“Everything is great, it just goes day by day,” she said.

Corson had some words of wisdom for the graduating class of 2018.

“Don’t sweat the small stuff,” she said.

“There is a whole world out there, and you get to shape it.”

Terry Bradley has been part of the Fairview community her entire life. She attended high school here, graduating in 1976, and came back to work here for the last 13 years.

“It’s hard to walk away from something you’re so proud of,” said Bradley.

Bradley said the students are still as high-achieving in academics, performance and athletics as they were when she was in high school. Some aspects of the school, however, have changed.

“I know there’s more pressure now than when I went to school here,” said Bradley. “I admire the way that the students here have a real desire to learn, and they want life beyond school to also be really meaningful.”

Bradley works as the Talented and Gifted coordinator and teaches the Theory of Knowledge class every Tuesday. Along with her job at Fairview, she gives workshops and talks around the state.

“I mean, people know the name, we have such an amazing reputation. And inherent in that we know that there are underlying issues with being a school that is so rigorous, and so highly demanding,” said Bradley.

“That’s where I hope I’ve come into play.”

That is where the majority of Bradley’s job is focused—helping students navigate high school. And that is also what Bradley will miss the most—the students.

“I am going to miss, even more than the scheduled classes that I was teaching, I am going to miss the random conversations in my office with students,” said Bradley.

Kathy Hicks will be retiring after 21 years working at Fairview. When first hired, Hicks worked in the Language Arts (LA) department, teaching American Literature. After working in the LA department, Hicks moved to the Social Studies department before working as a counselor for four years. After that, Hicks realized she missed teaching and returned to the Social Studies department, teaching American History, Freshman Government and World History.

“One of my favorite things is when a student is struggling, and you see that lightbulb moment for them, and then they gain a little confidence and they get better at what they’re doing,” said Hicks.

Hicks also coached the Fairview Mock Trial team for a year, and she’s tried to bring that experience to the classes she teaches.

“One of the big assignments I do in class is a Mock Trial and I’ve had… a few of my kids go into law because of that Mock Trial,” said Hicks.

Hicks said she loves Mock Trial because she loves taking “the understanding of whatever the issues are and trying to find a way to apply it to real world situations.”

Hicks hopes that the 2018 seniors won’t “be afraid of the inevitable bad times that will come. It’s an opportunity for growth.

Just go for it.”

EIC GOODBYES

As the year comes to a close, and the juniors become seniors, the former Co-Editorsin-Chief must say goodbye

Wowzum. That’s one of my new invented hip words, but I think it’s a good description of how this year has gone. As the issues continued coming along, each magazine continued to impress me, but especially when we got to the Red Issue in March, the staff completely blew my expectations away.

As the year comes to a close, I’ve been incredibly grateful for the amazing work we’ve all done, from interpreting my confusing suggestions on the smallest design details to the late nights of doing absolutely nothing when we’re supposed to be doing a lot more than nothing. I’ve also loved making my impossible Spot-the-Differences and laughing from our readers’ suffering when only circling three out of the ten differences after an hour of looking.

We’ve had so many fun days, that I’ll be missing, and which more than make up for any of the unfun days we’ve had. It’s been a joy taking newspaper-related classes for my four years at high school and I’m grateful for the experience I’ve had. I’ll miss everyone so much and am unbelievably excited to see what the Royal Banner does next year!

Three years in the J-Lab and you learn a lot. A lot of useful stuff, like how to design a spread or sell an ad or write a good article.

There’s also another set of skills you’re forced to acquire when you spend a large sum of your teenage years pouring over bylines and style guides.

For example, how to handle students in distress when they can’t find the last Spot-the-Difference, or the best technique to use when pushing a grocery cart with a wonky wheel full of newspapers up the ramps.

I’ve figured out exactly why everyone gets so enraged by the use of comic sans or papyrus and which pizza place delivers the fastest to Fairview past six.

I discovered that journalism attracts the strangest, most wonderful people you will ever meet. People that will teach you how to interview the principal and be a good person. I’ve met my best friends and favorite people through late nights spent perfecting stories and early mornings distributing issues.

And of course there’s Doc Z, who pushes all of us to find our edge and discover the truth in journalism. I’ll miss you all so very much.

IMMERSION Three stories of academic adventures abroad

BY EMMA O’LEARY From Italy to Bali, spanning from six months to two years, Fairview students and teachers alike have embarked on adventures that are greater than a summer vacation: they have studied or taught in a foreign country.

Senior Marcella Mason studied in a town called Agrigento near Sicily, Italy, the second semester of her sophomore year.

“For my program I chose Italy as a whole, and I thought, ‘oh, I’ll probably be in Tuscany, and eat gelato with a beautiful Italian boyfriend on the back of a Moped,’” Mason said. “It did not even cross my mind once that I would go to Sicily, but it ended up being perfect.”

While in Italy, Mason lived with a host family and attended an Italian school.

For Mason, the language barrier presented many difficulties, as she only knew four words in Italian upon arriving in Italy.

“My host family didn’t speak any English, and my classmates weren’t very good at English, [so] I really didn’t have the option not to learn Italian,” Mason said. “I didn’t connect with anyone at school because I didn’t know Italian very well and they didn’t know English.”

Junior Rebecca Hoyt is currently studying abroad in Belgium and is nearing the end of her 11-month exchange program.

“

barrier would hold me back from lots of things,” Hoyt wrote. “Once I got here I realized it was nothing to be scared about.”

For teacher Mike Mowen, who taught in Bali, Indonesia, the language barrier was not a challenge, but he did face several difficulties while teaching in Bali.

The electricity would go out very frequently, and even then the backup generators were not very reliable. Teaching multiple classes with different material also posed a challenge for Mowen. “[For] teaching, I just learned [to] always roll with the punches,” Mowen said. “I taught five different classes, so five different preps and things would constantly change, and the students were very different from any students I’d ever dealt with.”

Despite the difficulties, Mason, Mowen and Hoyt all have made memories that they are fond of. For Mowen, it is surfing before school. For Mason, it is realizing how far she progressed in Italian when she understood a classmate’s joke, and for Hoyt it was making Thanksgiving dinner for her Belgian host family.

“The best part is hard to say,” Hoyt said.

“The best part is pretty much everything.”

All three agree that studying or teaching abroad is a valuable experience.

“I think whenever you can [...] put yourself in other people’s worlds or cultures, I think

it’s very advantageous and gives you a better perspective of what the world is and what you have and where you fit in that world,” Mowen said.

“It’s a great opportunity to figure out how to self-advocate as well as embracing yourself for who you are,” Hoyt said.

“I think it is incredibly valuable to get out of your comfort zone and experience life in a new way in a new place.”

Mason emphasizes the value of becoming bilingual while studying abroad.

“I think it is incredibly valuable to get out of your comfort zone and experience life in a new way in a new place,” Mason said. “I really, really recommend studying abroad if you can, and go somewhere where you don’t know the language [...] because I think being bilingual is one of the best things you can ever do.”

In fact, studying abroad made Mason realize that she wants to go to school for international affairs to learn languages. “[Studying abroad] really put me on a path to a future that I’m excited about,” she said.

“Once I got here, I realized it was nothing to be scared about.”

“I love the feeling of experiencing something new and exciting for myself and I felt like an exchange year was a great opportunity to not only visit and learn about a different culture, but to participate in it as well,” Hoyt wrote in an email.

Like Mason, Hoyt was not fluent in French before arriving in Belgium.

From the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific, Maclaine Reeder is headed across the ocean to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The draw to the school, besides the “really chill atmosphere,” said Reeder, is the unique major the university offers.

Reeder will be studying kinesiology and rehabilitation science. The major focuses on the physiological dynamic principles and human body movement. Reeder hopes she can use what she learns about anatomy to assist others. “[I want to] help the human body by exercises and knowing about your body,” said Reeder.

Next year Shea Wood is attending the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kingspoint New York. The choice is a unique one, as Wood is one of 500 seniors going into the military as their next step in life.

The academy offers a distinct experience that other colleges do not. “The opportunity to be at sea and explore the world a little bit,” is what interested Wood in the first place.

Along with the chance to travel abroad while serving, Wood wanted to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

“I wanted to pursue a similar path,” said the senior.

As excited as he is to begin his service, Wood is aware of what he will have to give up while at Kingspoint. “I have a lot of freedom now but a lot of that is just going to be different when I get there,” said Wood.

As he moves on to the next chapter of his life at the US Merchant Marine Academy, Wood is thankful for all that Fairview has taught him.

“I’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons that I will be able to carry over,” said Wood.

Since second grade, Denali Pinto has pushed herself on and off the court. As her high school basketball career came to a close, Pinto knew she wanted to continue playing.

“I definitely did not want basketball to be over after high school,” said Pinto. “I knew that I wanted to play in college, that’s been my goal since I was really young.”

The process of choosing a college for anyone is difficult. In addition to deciding on location, academics and tuition, those who want to participate in sports have the athletic aspect to think about.

Pinto’s choice came naturally to her. “Colorado School of Mines felt like a really good fit for me academically and athletics-wise,” said Pinto.

Eleven years of basketball later, Pinto will continue to give the sport her all as a Miner.

“I’ve loved basketball my entire life. I really enjoy the sport, the team aspect,” said Pinto.

According to the New York Times, 67% of American high school graduates attend college immediately after high school, though the 33% that goes on to pursue a different path is growing. Johnny Garcia is one of the many that choose to work towards a different goal other than a college degree.

“Next year I’ll be working on my car detailing business which I started last summer and hopefully expanding it,” said Garcia about his next adventure.

Garcia stumbled upon his passion when his father introduced him to the business.

“When I got my own car, I started cleaning it a bunch and my friend wanted me to clean hers, which turned into her mom’s, then her mom’s friend, and then I was booked for the summer,” said Garcia.

Once Garcia graduates, he looks forward to being able to fully commit to his business.

“I’m excited to leave because I want to see what I can do in a year without having to be at school five days a week,” said Garcia.
