A

T

he Unified Basketball Team kicked off their season in a tournament on Jan. 17 at the Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood, taking fourth place out of 30 schools. This is the team to watch this year with experienced seniors and excited new players.

In the tournament, they won four games, advancing to the third place game based off of the amount of points they scored in total. In the third place game, the team lost to Smoky Hill, 24-16.

The team is coached by special education teacher Ken Bean, and paraeducator Lyle Krebill, who had a lot of positive takeaways from the tournament.

“It was a good experience,” said Krebill.

“We had 11 students from the ILC class that played. And then we had eight general ed students who played with us. There’s three

ILC students on the court at one time, and two gen ed students. The gen ed students help facilitate the game.”

Help from the general education students really enhanced the experience for the Intensive Learning Center (ILC) student athletes around them. There were eight gen ed students who attended the tournament, including seniors Vince Gordon and Nate Gann who have been helping the team out since their freshman year.

“I just like making those kids feel like they’re apart of a real varsity team,” says Gordon. “They deserve the same experience we get on varsity basketball or varsity soccer... They [should] experience high school just like we do.”

Some standout performances at the tournament included senior Kohlor Von Eschen, senior Mary Cruz Lopez Flores and senior Quinn Pruitt. Unified started four years ago, when the current seniors were freshman, so for them, this last season is very special.

“So much fun,” was the way that Florez, an experienced senior, described her time playing. “I was like the leader,” she said.

There were plenty of new players as well, such as sophomore Burke Adams and freshman Ty Reilly.

“It’s always nice to see new kids come out,” says Coach Krebill. “And they weren’t even necessarily freshman. They just haven’t wanted to join in the past but then they said ‘Hey, this looks kinda fun we want to get involved.’ Leo and Eddy were new as well, but they were the two freshman.”

Ty Reilly, freshman, manages the Varsity boys basketball team and is a huge fan of the Golden State Warriors. Going into the tournament, he had high confidence in the team and was excited to play with his “two best friends, Kohlor and Eddy.”

Von Eschen is playing his fourth season for the Unified Basketball Team.

“The king of the three-point bomb,” said Krebill about Von Eschen. “He does not take anything inside the three-point line. He made two or three and it’s fun to see him running down, playing to the crowd. He loves it. He likes to do the Ezekiel Elliott celebration: feed me.”

Overall, the Unified team had an amazing experience at the Field House, preparing for their four league games that they have this Spring.

Ponder said that Monarch is one of their hardest opponents, so be sure to show out during that game later this year.

TOO MUCH DRIP

Following the Girls Swim team’s pursuit of their second state title in four years

fter winning the state championship in 2016 and finishing second in both 2017 and 2018, the Girls Swim team looks stronger than ever. With a deep and talented roster that features a senior class loaded with NCAA Division I, II and III commits, the team is primed to make a run for its second state championship in four years.

“We’re very excited,” said senior Mikayla Seigal. “We’re motivating each other each day. We’re just working towards our goal of winning state.”

Ranked first in the state after defeating the reigning state champions, Fossil Ridge High School, on Jan. 8 in their home-pool at South Boulder Recreation Center, the team has been performing at an elite level all year. After beginning the season 1-1 in league competition, the Knights took first place out of 55 teams at the Rex Abelein Memorial Invitational on Dec. 15. They tallied points in every race, using their deep and experienced roster to their advantage.

“Our depth is one of our biggest strengths as a team,” said senior Kim Lanaghen. “We have a lot of people who are so talented in

so many different races. That’s really special because a lot of teams don’t have that.”

The team didn’t slow down after its first tournament win, easily taking first place at the Boulder County Invite on Jan. 5 with 859 points and placing second in the Mountain Range Invite on Jan. 12 and the Fountain-Fort Carson Lady Trojan Invite on Jan. 18. Throughout the season they’ve prided themselves on their unity, teamwork and selflessness.

“We’re a huge community and we’re really excited to come together as a team,” said senior Mya Drost-Parra. “Our relays are really good and not only do we have top finishers, but we have a lot of second or third place finishers as well who stack up points.”

end of the lane for each freshman’s first swim or simply setting a goal for everyone to swim in a meet, the program’s inclusiveness and sense of community sets it apart from other sports at Fairview.

“To build that camaraderie from top to bottom, it’s not easy.”

“I think that certain sports lend themselves to that natural support network for the lower level kids,” said Athletic Director Terrin Kelly. “Some of our other programs are spread out. As an example in football, our freshman team practices over at Southern Hills Middle School, so the physical layout makes it more difficult to do that. And so I think being forced into one pool helps that.

To build that camaraderie from top to bottom, it’s not easy. I believe it matters a lot.”

This year’s phenomenal senior class boasts eight NCAA Division I committed swimmers, including Mya Drost-Parra (Tulane University), Kim Lanaghen (University of Nebraska), Amelie Lessing (University of Kansas), Una Forsythe (University of Miami), Kaia Reznicek (Dartmouth College), Mikayla Seigal (University of Wisconsin), Riley Tapley (San Diego State University) and Alex Schwier (Air Force Academy).

“Coming in, we had the biggest freshman class, so we knew our senior year would be special. It’s just such a strong group,” said

The Front Range League Championships took place on Feb. 2 at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton, Colorado. The CHSAA 5A state championships took place one week later on Feb. 7 in the same venue.

NEW SCHEDULE WHO DIS? Students and faculty give their opinions on the new 2019-2020 high school schedule

n Monday, Jan. 14, Superintendent, Rob Anderson, announced the school board’s decision to implement a new schedule for the 2019-20 school year. All BVSD high schools will start at 8:35am and end at 4:05pm, extending the school day by 10 minutes.

During an average Colorado winter, the sun starts dipping below the Flatirons by 4:05.

In a poll that was conducted, 85.5% of people surveyed were against the new schedule changes, while only 14.5% were in favor of the change.

Sophomore Miles Brown was blatantly opposed to the new schedule.

“It’s horrible. I hate it,” he said.

Evidently, many of his peers shared his view, as many of the comments in the polls took a hostile tone.

Brett Reamon, junior, was more collected than most in expressing his opinion.

“The extra time we get to sleep isn’t significant enough to really make the change worthwhile.”

“I think that everyone will eventually get used to it and be alright with it, but I also think that it interferes with after school activities and extracurriculars,” Reamon said.

The majority of the 14.5% of students in favor of the schedule change were in support of more time to sleep. However, opposing students say that they would only get 5-10 minutes of extra sleep, because they wake up too late anyway.

In a July 30, 2018 article, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) said that teens don’t get enough sleep due to early school start times. The article references a study done by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends that high schools and middle schools should start at 8:30 or later.

“Not getting enough sleep is common among high school students and is associated with several health risks including being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and using drugs, as well as poor academic performance,” said the American Academy of Pediatrics study. “During puberty, adolescents become sleepy later at night and need to sleep later in the morning as a result in shifts in biological rhythms.”

Owen Cope said, “I think that we didn’t need half an hour they just needed to push it back 10-15 minutes. It’s a problem for after school activities. It will be hard to show up on times for things.”

Some of the participants in the survey voiced their concerns about the fact that Southern Hills Middle School starts at the same time, and that the traffic getting to Fairview would become worse than it already is.

“We’ve got to move traffic. Southern Hills is going to have to change their time,” said

Principal Donald Stensrud. “8:30 and 8:35, that’s not going to fly.”

Another issue that will be caused by the schedule change surrounds sports and extracurriculars. With school ending at 4:05, the earliest that any practice could start is around 4:20 to 4:30. Unfortunately, teams have to practice at different times due to the lack of fields. By the time the last practice is over, it will have been dark for hours.

I guess we’ll see what the schedule finally turns out to be, and whether those ten extra minutes are worth it or not. I personally feel that the school day ends too late and starts too late. We’re going to have the same amount of homework, so with the later end time we’re going to have to stay up later doing homework anyway. Since I also play school sports, those practices will start too late and have to end early because it will be too dark.

Stensrud said, “All we know is we’re starting at 8:35.”

KEEP THE CASTLE GREEN Becoming the first full sized Green Star high school in the nation

O

ur school has not only joined the initiative to reduce trash, it has now become the first full-sized Green-Star high school in the nation.

Becoming a Green Star school is a serious change, for the students, the employees and the environment.

Green Star is a program implemented by Eco-Cycle, a nonprofit recycler based in Boulder County. Among other objectives, they seek tow reduce waste in Colorado schools and to educate students about conserving resources. A Green Star school has a separate bin for compost and an additional educational program that seeks to inform students about proper trash sorting. In addition, schools may take up projects each year that seek to further reduce waste.

“Typically, we’ll see about a 60% diversion from landfill once you’re recycling and composting.”

Starting in the spring of 2005, the Green Star program has since been implemented at 50 schools.

“The whole hope of the program is to reduce your trash, your landfill materials, your recycling and then [add] composting into that,” said Kim Orr, the project manager of Green Star Schools at Eco-Cycle.

“Typically, we’ll see about a 60% diversion from landfill once you’re recycling and composting.”

A group of student representatives from Student Council, National Honor Society and Net Zero club created a student advisory board to aid in the implementation of the new program by helping Eco-Cycle inform all of the students in the school about the new changes and what and what ramifications it could have on their typical day at school.

“The goal of [Green Star] is to get students involved… so that more people are aware and more people know what exactly is going to happen and how they can contribute,” said junior Ainsley Hutchinson, a member of the student advisory board.

Members of the student advisory board have helped in advertising the introduction and concept of becoming a Green Star school, coming up with ideas for an assembly, half-time event and a video.

introducing it, showing how easy it is, that it’s actually something that we all can do, and hopefully building a crowd around it because it’s what we can do for the Earth,” said senior Lea Martinson, a member of the student advisory board.

Our school will see some major changes to its waste disposal habits, but these adjustments will not require students to put in any extra effort except taking a extra few seconds to think about what they are throwing away and where it should go.

The sorting of waste is crucial, as incorrect sorting can produce detrimental impacts by contaminating composted and recycled material.

“At the recycling center if we make a mistake there is a human to fix it, but [at] compost facilities there’s not. So when we add things to the compost that should not be there, there’s no human there to fix it,” said Orr. “If you’re adding the contaminants like plastic, metal and glass, that stuff is being added back into your soil, that’s then growing the plants that you’re going to eat, and then those contaminants end up in you.”

In addition to the normal recycling bins and trash bins, students will see the addition of compost bins. The Cafe will also see major changes with the replacement of the recyclable containers and plastic utensils with reusable materials. This was a huge investment by the Boulder Valley food services and also means that there will be stations around school for the used dishes to be put in once students are finished with them.

The introduction of the Green Star program also indicates major changes for staff.

Although using reusable dishes may benefit the environment, it means that the lunch servers have much more work to do, such as collecting all of the dishes out of the stations around the school and then washing them after lunch periods.

requires more work for custodians. However, head custodian Mick Port has hopes for the program.

“Hopefully, the composting and recycling will improve here, which should cut the trash in half which means less stuff going to the landfill, which is better for the environment,” said Port. “I’m all for it, I think it’s a positive thing.”

A change that the students will not see first hand is the economic improvements that this program will bring.

Port has been monitoring the trash levels so that he can report a baseline amount of trash that is generated. After the program launches, he will monitor it again to hopefully see reduction. If that reduction occurs, the trash trucks will be coming less often which saves the school and district money.

Fairview has three large dumpsters in the back of the school: a four-cubic yard, a six-cubic yard and an eight-cubic yard.

“They’re completely full every night,” said Port. “That’s a lot of trash.”

Although the Green Star program may affect the lives of students and staff, there is also hope it will inspire students to conserve resources and think about their waste.

“We all have tons of things going on in our lives,” said Orr. “Generally, if you tell someone the impacts... then it hits them, and it may have an effect on them.”

rom October to February, seniors gather years of work and emerging passions to comprise a neat presentation of the self they’ve discovered.

Then, applicants present all of this to their dream schools and ask them to validate their hard work -- but more truly, them.

Those tense months until April waiting for dreams to come true are best understood through the perspective of the Schrodinger’s Cat paradox. It’s the concept that if poison and a cat are sealed in a box that the cat is both dead and alive until opened.

However, an applicant’s dream college aren’t always dependant on the best fit for them. “When students are applying to colleges, they have certain names in mind -names they’ve heard all their lives,” said college counselor Carol Diebel. “It actually narrows their dreams.”

On Dec. 14, I opened my decision letter from Northwestern University. Although I knew it was a long shot applying Early Decision to a school with an 8.6% acceptance rate, my dream was still very alive. When I opened the letter and failed to see “Congratulations!” sprawled at the top, I instantly closed my laptop and stared blankly.

I wasn’t mad or sad -- just empty. Suddenly all of my work and passions felt invalid because a top university didn’t want me.

And though it took me some time to work through it, I recognize that the path in front of me is likely the one I’m meant to walk.

OPINION “At first, I was heartbroken,” said Anya Aidun. “But I was also confused and kind of angry because [deferral isn’t] really an answer.” After being deferred from Northwestern University, Aidun reflects on her past four years and urges underclassmen to “[not] live [their lives] for college.

They’ll see right through that. Follow your interests; follow your passions; get involved.”

“Deferral doesn’t mean that they don’t like your character,” said Nikaash Maheshwari. “It just means that you might not be a good fit at the school.” While waiting to learn his acceptance status after being deferred from Harvard University, Maheshwari reminds himself and other seniors in a similar position that it’s most important to “[not] get senioritis; keep working hard.”

“You get tunnel vision from the process because you have to decide the place you want go the most, if you’re doing Early Decision,” said Mariah Menaker, who was rejected from Yale University. “There are a lot of places that would be a really good fit for you and I think it’s easy to lose track of that.” To ease the pressure of applications and the potential heartbreak, Menaker urges future college applicants to “[not] get overly invested in one institution.”

“[After being rejected from Emerson College] I learned that I don’t know what I want to do with my life,” said Luca Lajeunesse.

“I felt pressured by society to go to college, and I think that’s a good thing to be open to but it’s not for everybody.” Lajeunesse reminds everyone to “stay open and positive” as they navigate through the process of determining their path.

“Don’t listen to people who put so much pressure on this,” said John Parker. “[College is] one of the least important parts of who you are.”

After being deferred from California Institute of Technology, Parker found himself discovering other schools that could be a better fit. “In being deferred, I did more research on other schools. I’m almost interested in the other schools more than the one I was deferred from.”

VAPE NATION? Fairview’s dangerous vaping epidemic

BY SARAH SMITH AND ILANA BAUM According to National Institute on Drug Abuse, 37.3% of high school students reported that they have vaped in the past 12 months in 2018, which is an increase from 27.8% in 2017. Though Boulder seems to be at the top of charts concerning health, smoking, and physical activity, is our town that different from others around the country when it comes to vaping?

Michael Flood, the Dean of students said, “I would say it’s pretty popular in Boulder maybe even a little higher here than in other cities. Other schools in our district have problems with the volume of kids who vape too.”

I go to school with. There are many people that vape here and I see it almost every day in the bathrooms. It’s not like anyone is trying to make me vape, but I feel a lot of pressure to.”

But peer pressure isn’t the only reason high school students vape.

Flood said, “One of those juul pods contains the same amount of nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, maybe even more. And they go through it much faster than they would with a normal pack of cigarettes so it’s a much faster addiction.” He continued, “at that point they want to do it more and that’s when we start to see it here at school during school hours because they need that fix.”

Rob Vandepol, a gym and former health teacher said, “I think vaping as a problem is pretty comparable to drinking or anything else [students] doing behind the scenes. It
