It’s been a long semester. The first semester always is. But as we move towards the end of this first chapter of the school year, we can reflect on our proud accomplishments and look forward to what the future holds. In this issue, we look back on the March to the Polls and an exciting soccer season. We also give a glimpse of the coming winter season in sports and choir. Lastly, we give thanks to some of the staff that are an integral and sometimes underappreciated part of this building.

We hope that this issue provides you with an excuse to take a break from the grind, relax and enjoy yourself.

Recapping the Men’s Soccer Team’s unforgettable season

S

hock and dissapointment hung in the air as the Knights walked off the soccer field for the last time this season. Dozens of students quietly filed out of the bleachers, shaking their heads in disbelief. The seemingly impossible had happened. The undefeated men’s varsity soccer team lost to Arapahoe High School 1-0 in the state quarterfinals.

Up until the night of Nov. 3 the season was nothing short of perfect. Undefeated.

Ranked first in the state. Ranked fifth nationally. All signs pointed to a strong performance in the playoffs and and the Knights winning their first ever state championship.

Despite the ultimate playoff exit, this was still a season that few will forget.

The Knights started the season in dominant fashion, out-scoring teams 18-2 in their first six games. The team’s confidence was high, but they became sure of their ability to win state after two key rivalry games at the end of September.

Fairview overcame a 1-0 deficit and scored three goals in the final 20 minutes to beat Monarch High School. Senior Myles Ellis scored an incredible header to defeat the arch-rival - then number one ranked - Boulder High School in double overtime.

“After the last 20 minutes against Monarch and after beating Boulder, we knew that we

had something special,” said Ellis.

The leadership of the seniors was instrumental in the team’s success. Not only were Cooper Harmon, Sajji Singh and Myles Ellis among the team’s top performers, they also motivated the underclassmen and juniors to step up all year long.

“The way that they execute the game together, you don’t often see at the high school level”

Harmon said, “I felt that the group of seniors that we had leading was sort of a perfect combination. We had leaders vocally and leaders, like [Myles Ellis], who would just work all day. It set an example for the younger guys and it just set our team up for success. The seniors knew that we would be a good team, but we needed everyone to perform.”

Talent from multiple grade levels was certainly an area of strength for the Knights.

Junior goalkeeper Carter Melton was rock-solid, allowing just one goal in 925 minutes and largely contributing to the team’s mere 0.188 average goals against.

Sophomore Sebastien Mazur led the team with seven assists, playing a significant role in the team’s strong midfield.

“We were all bought in to the common goal of winning a state championship,” said Ellis. “This year kids were able to buy into their roles and we started playing for each other and the results just came that way.”

“It was inspiring to me to see such high quality play,” said Athletic Director Terrin Kelly. “The way that they controlled the ball and the way that they execute the game together, you don’t often see at the high school level.”

Fairview students and teachers attended every home game, and with each win they came in greater numbers to witness the undefeated Knights’ quest for a championship.

“Once it became clear that we were going to into the tournament as the number one seed, the that energy level picked up,” said Kelly.

Senior super fan Didac Garcia-Grau said, “The team was really good and really fun to watch. To have a team that was number

PREVIEWING FAIRVIEW’S WINTER SPORTS TEAMS

Girls Swim:

Well, this no doubt is a very talented group of athletes. With seven girls having already committed to Division-I schools and three committed to Division-III schools, there’s plenty of buzz around this team. It’s clear they rely a lot on senior leadership, but that’s not all that defines them. They are very talented swimmers. “Our best event is the 100 fly as we have the most people that score in it,” said senior Mya Drost. We can expect this talented team to make a really strong push for a state title.

Monarch Hockey: five in the country was pretty cool, just to be able to tell people from others schools that we were undefeated.”

The Knights were cemented as a top team in the state, and never lost their edge in the following weeks. They finished the regular season with an undefeated 15-0 record, improving to 17-0 after defeating Mountain Vista and Rock Canyon, both in overtime, in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

However, on Nov. 3, the magical season came to a sudden end. The eighth-ranked Arapahoe Warriors emerged victorious over the Knights, shocking every player, coach, parent and student.

Despite the disappointing finish, this remarkable season will never be forgotten.

“I was just shocked after we lost because it was my last time playing on a team that I loved,” said Harmon. “A little bit after I just felt happy that I went through the season with the players that I went through it with.”

Although, not directly affiliated with Fairview, the Monarch hockey team has four fellow Knights: Ian Capdeville, Shin Steinbarth, Jordan Finney and Alex Scatena. It’s a team that doesn’t get a whole lot of attention in the hallways, but they are a force to be reckoned with in 5A hockey. “We have a great group of guys who work hard all the time. Our captain Jordan Finney really pushes us to keep up that work ethic on and off the ice,” senior goalie Ian Capdeville said. “We are always having fun together.”

Boys Basketball:

With five seniors and all five returning starters, this team has no shortage of experience.

I mean “no shortage” literally, as there are only three players on the roster listed under six feet tall. The only thing on the team’s mind this year is State Championship. To get there they will rely on experience, shooting, and size. “We just compete every day and we are gonna continue to come out ring chasing the whole season. We want the whole state to know about our ‘lights out’ shooting ability,” senior Nate Gann said.

Girls Basketball:

This team is a relatively young team, experience-wise. However, they aren’t afraid of any team or program. With just three returning players from last year, they will need to rely on senior Kate Lampert’s leadership and experience. “The strengths on the team mostly come from a leadership standpoint.

Having been on varsity the last two years, I’m confident with our skills and I am able to guide some of the younger players,” said Lampert. A couple other players to watch on the team are the other two returning players, Izzy Munson and Adaya Richmond as well as freshman Kailey Paige.

NOT SO SILENT NIGHT A preview of the upcoming Holday Concert

T

here are many reasons to attend this year’s Holiday Concert—the diverse selection of music, the gorgeous venue and the festive spirit floating through the air.

The concert will be located at Macky Auditorium Concert Hall this year (instead of the auditorium at Fairview) due to delays in construction. This also means that it is happening for one night only, instead of the usual two. However, this seems to be a suitable substitute and a new challenge for the choir students as Macky Auditorium is massive and beautiful.

“We’re going to do some cool things with it, we’re actually going to have choirs seated in parts of the audience... we haven’t fully worked through it all, but because the backstage area isn’t like ours here, we need to be creative with that,” said Zachary Strand, the director of Jesters, Troubadours and Kingsmen. “I expect it to be a really full, fun house and... I would love for people who aren’t just [in] the choir community to be coming and checking this out because it’s going to be be a pretty special night.”

Senior Ali Stewart, who is in both the Festival and Excalibur choirs, gave her opinion on the location change.

“Obviously I would prefer to have my last

winter concert at Fairview, but I feel like Macky is such a great alternative because it’s such a beautiful space,” said Stewart. “It doesn’t bother me as much because it’s at Macky. If it was at Boulder High, I’d probably be a little sad.”

This new setting is also exciting to the choir students, as the choir teachers purposefully pick songs for this venue so they can fully take advantage of the new location and can make the music sound its best.

“It’s a space where the sound really travels and it’s very resonant,” said senior Sarita Narayanswamy. “We’re picking songs that especially pertain to the space that we’re given, so I’m really excited to hear what that’s going to sound like.”

The setlist for the concert is something that not only the choir students are looking forward to, but something the audience should get excited for.

“Troubadours, they’re doing pieces from the musical ‘Finding Neverland,’ which will be sweet, Kingsmen’s doing this really cool reflective set, Jesters are singing about far distant love which will be pretty fun,” said Strand.

Throughout the concert there will be many holiday classics such as ‘Jingle Bells,’ ‘Silent Night’ and ‘New Years Day’ but with

“new twists on holiday songs that you’ve never heard before, some really cool people singing good music,” said Maria McMillan, a senior in Festival and Excalibur and a pianist for Chivalry.

The audience can also look forward to the favored Mass choir. In this tradition, choir students and alumni can participate in singing holiday songs and surrounding the audience as they’re singing to guide their path outside the auditorium after the concert.

“Mass Choir gives you the opportunity to get to sing with all your friends” “The alumni are allowed to sing ‘Silent Night,’ and so they usually stand by a sibling or a friend if they recently graduated, and then they all go out into the hall humming the song, and people usually leave to the humming,” said Strand. “We might have to adapt that this year, but we’ll still do ‘Silent Night’ and I’m sure we’ll still have people join.”

Mia Parnaby, a junior who’s been in choir since freshman year, spoke highly about Mass choir.

“As an underclassmen, you don’t always get to sing with the upperclassmen or you don’t get to sing with kids older than you or younger than you,” said Parnaby. “Mass Choir gives you the opportunity to get to sing with all your friends.”

McMillan said, “It’s a very peaceful way to end the night and [it] makes me feel warm inside.”

The evening is filled with many exciting performances, which adds to the length of the concert, but with each performance differing in musical approaches, it’s difficult to get bored.

“It’s really long, but it’s worth it. It’s not excruciatingly long in the sense that you’re ready to go home after the third choir,” said McMillan.“Everyone has something to share and it’s really valuable if you watch everyone perform.”

During the concert, you can expect each choir to sing two to four songs, and for the styles of music to vary, as each choir has their own character. For example, Troubadours choir is performing musical theatre pieces to honor its past as a show choir. Jazz and a capella music will also make an appearance, alongside themes such as women empowerment in Enchantment’s songs.

Stewart has a message for the audience.

“We all love to sing; that’s why we’re in choir,” she said. “I think that the audience should just know that we’re just having a great time because we’re finally sharing this stuff that we’ve worked so hard on.”

oing in to see “Bohemian Rhapsody,” I had no idea what to expect.

On one hand, critics gave it mixed reviews at best. On the other, it earned $51 million during opening weekend (according to Deadline.com) and received 8.4 stars on IMDb. Whatever I expected, I most certainly did not anticipate turning up to the theater only to find literally every single seat sold out in the entire theater except one. And I saw it four days after it came out!

There’s no denying “Bohemian Rhapsody” has nearly become a cultural phenomenon, despite barely being out a month.

From giving new life to the classic Queen hits to fueling people’s fascination with the enigmatic legend that was Freddie Mercury, this film was a long time coming (and rightly so!) But did it live up to the hype? Sort of. The film was incredibly strong in some parts, yet weak in others.

The main issues lie with the beginning of the film, the pacing and the film’s focus. At the start of the film, rather than a slow start gradually introducing us to Freddie and the rest of the band in kind, we are immediately launched into Freddie joining the band and producing hits with them; they release their smash-hit “Killer Queen” less than 15 minutes into the film. This issue ties into the focus of the film: is this a movie about Freddie? Or the origins about Queen? Is it about their journey to the top of the charts? Or is it about the band members’ personal struggles? This issue could have

been fixed one of two ways: either focusing a lot more on the band as a whole at the beginnings of their career, or cutting the opening entirely, merely introducing us to the band after they have already become famous. This would have clarified the themes a lot more and made it feel less convoluted.

In addition, the pacing is difficult to keep up with. As I mentioned, the movie starts at lightning speed, taking Queen from a college band to an international hit-maker within a matter of minutes. Around the halfway mark however, the movie slows to a near halt, examining Freddie’s personal life in great detail and at great length. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciated a deeper, more introspective take on Freddie, but this once again made the film confusing and muddied the director’s intentions.

There was, however, a great deal the film did right. Most outstanding was Rami

Malek’s at times charming, at times perplexingly weird, yet altogether captivating performance as the incomparable lead singer of Queen. He gives the character his all, bringing charisma, quirks, and above all a real humanity that every actor aspires to bring to his or her character.

In addition, the look of the film was exquisite: the color, the costumes, the sets, the unique camera techniques all perfectly complimented the mood. Not only did the look excellently capture the 70s/80s nostalgia the film was so clearly aiming for, it also highlighted the confusion, the glory, the frustration and the triumphs so common in the lives of these rockstars. It really put the audience in the minds of Queen; it brought dimension, depth and genuine empathy from the audience.

One of the most notably good aspects of the movie: it’s funny. It’s so funny. This film has no pretense of being some jaw-dropping, epic, greatest-movie-of-all-time drama; it perfectly balances its more poignant moments with jokes that had the entire theater roaring with laughter.

All in all, “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” comedy, its music and its endearing portrayals keep the film an entertaining audience pleaser through and through despite its flaws.

The overall best thing about the movie, however: the hair. Absolutely brilliant.

S

eeing “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” interestingly, I had the exact opposite experience as I did seeing “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I was the only person in the entire theater. (Granted, I did see it on a Monday night at 9:00 PM.) Although this was probably largely due to the fact that it’s a Christmas movie and I saw it in mid-November, I think there’s probably a larger reason for the fact that there was no one else there.

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is further evidence that Disney doesn’t need to make a live action remake of, you know, literally everything. It was a film no one really asked for and few people were super fired up to see. After watching it, I can say that there’s nothing awful about the movie… but there’s also nothing great. It’s not an abomination of filmmaking, but it’s not really worth the time or the money either.

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” has its good parts of course. It features some truly impressive and creative visuals, and despite the overwhelming amounts of CGI, is very pleasing to the eye. I also appreciated the ways in which the film pays tribute the the ballet it came from. The filmmakers put effort into respecting the source material despite taking some heavy creative liberties.

Unfortunately, however, there are many parts that detract from its few high points.

It’s super-clichéd, and many of the dialogue moments felt flat and uninspired. From a predictable plot to a silly, by-the-numbers climax, there’s no genuinely tense moments.

In addition, the attempts at humor were not very well written and didn’t make much sense. I think I yawned more often than I laughed, if I’m being honest.

Even the three A-list actors in the film couldn’t do much to save “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.” Dame Helen Mirren gave a surprisingly uncompelling performance as Mother Ginger (though this may have been the fault of the script) and Morgan Freeman was barely in the movie.

But unfortunately the worst part was Keira Knightley (who I normally love) as the Sugar Plum Fairy—she was just kind of annoying. From her high-pitched voice to her awkward mannerisms to her straight-up

A MARCH FOR CHANGE Student groups unite to change the voting demographic

By Anya Aidun and Sara George Chants rang throughout the hallways on Thursday, Oct. 25 as students eagerly walked down to the ballot box to cast their votes. The Net Zero and the Students Demand Action clubs led the movement with the intent to increase youth voter participation in Boulder County.

The number of youth voters has been historically low this year. In fact, according to The New York Times, in the last midterm election in 2014, less than 20% of eligible youth voters (aged 18-29) cast their ballots. Students Demand Action is hoping to change that.

“We are the future. We are the generation that’s inheriting the country and so we need to really make sure that we are being active and we are creating the country and democracy that we want to live in,” said senior and vice president of Students Demand Action, Gray Freeman.

Fairview’s chapter of Students Demand Action belongs to a national organization that advocates for common-sense gun safety in the United States. The organization originated from the March for our Lives movement in the wake of the Parkland Shooting last year. Today, they work to not only register students to vote, but also to promote common-sense gun legislation.

Gun violence is a hotly debated topic in

the US. According to SocialSphere, which was founded by the Director of Polling at Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics, school shootings are among the most concerning issues for people aged under 30 when considering America’s future.

Fairview’s March to the Polls was part of a nationwide surge of young voters who were expected to cast their ballots in this year’s midterm election. According to a study by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School, young voters aged 18-29 were much more likely to vote in the 2018 midterm election than they were in the 2010 and 2014 midterm elections.

“Especially after the results of the last presidential election … it’s kind of like a wake up call for us,” said senior Avery Gillespie. “I think it’s just increasing a lot of awareness and a lot of youths are actually noticing what’s actually important about going to the polls.”

Among many of the march’s participants were students who were not even eligible to vote, such as junior Ainsley Hutchison.

“I figured the more people that come out here and show support, the more people will be motivated to vote,” said Hutchison.

Many teachers also came to the march to show support for youth voter participation.

“It was neat to see a whole group go down

there and all vote at once,” said history teacher Scott Peoples. “It wasn’t the solitary affair that it normally was.”

When asked about how to increase voter participation, senior Aria Mundy emphasized the importance of movements such as March to the Polls in increasing youth voter turnout.

“I think movements just like this show us that we really do have a voice and that we really do matter and that when we come together like this, we can really do awesome things,” said Mundy.

One thing is certain. The efforts of groups like Students Demand Action and Net Zero may have a significant impact on politics and the way voting is viewed among the next generation of the country “Movements like this show voting as something that people can do together,” said Hutchison. “It’s not something that should be a chore or something that you should take lightly. It’s a privilege and it should be something that’s celebrated.”

UNWRITTEN HEROES Meet the women who run the library

very day on average, around 1000 people visit the library studying, talking, laughing and making a mess.

With 1500 square feet and many windows, the library is easily one of the more popular places in our high school.

However, with all the time people are spending eating lunch, chilling with friends and doing homework, the librarians who help keep our library intact often go without recognition.

So who are they?

Meet Maura Rhodes

I

f you have been here for at most the last four years, then Maura Rhodes is a face you might know from time spent in the library.

However, she is more than the person who straightens the shelves and cleans up after students who have left their trash.

Growing up in Florida with a mother from Philadelphia and a father from the midwest, Rhodes has found herself in almost every nook and cranny of the United States.

“I actually came here in 2014 and was on vacation,” said Rhodes. “We fell in love with the area.”

resided in Asheville, North Carolina, where she was a librarian and teacher at a local elemetary school for 12 years.

“I don’t know if the kids are so much different” As she transitioned into managing a high school library, her conditions and role differed slightly. But the kids she encountered remained the same.

“It is different. I don’t know if the kids are so much different, other than they were smaller,” said Rhodes.

However, Rhodes is more than a librarian: she is a mom of three, a dog owner, and an avid gardener.

“I love to be outside, I know that's kind of crazy because I’m a librarian, but I love to

be outside,” said Rhodes. “When I am not at work, I am outside in the yard or taking my dog for a walk.”

Being the librarian that she is, of course, Rhodes is also very fond of reading.

She said, “I'm not a very fast reader which bugs me sometimes. But I love to read.”

Meet Tasha Brennan

T

asha Brennan, on the other hand, has only been roaming our bookshelves since last January. However, as she is a former student, she has still spent a considerable amount of time at this school.

“I graduated in 2009,” said Brennan. “I heard that there was a position in the library, which is my favorite place in the building and always has been. So I thought, ‘let’s try it,’ and last January they let me come back and play with my books all day!”

From her time here as a student to the present, the library physically has not altered much. However, the spirit of the room has changed drastically.

“When I was here, no food, no drink, no talking,” said Brennan.

Students are now allowed to eat and drink in the library, so long as when they leave, they clean up.

This past July, Brennan, formerly Anastasia Barnett, became the second Mrs. Brennan in the building, marrying English teacher and Student Council Advisor Tracy Brennan’s son, Connor.

“I need to make a dress out of paper” Brennan got married wearing a dress she made from scratch, constructed almost entirely out of book pages.

“I woke up from a fever dream just like ‘I need to make a dress out of paper,’” she said.

Although she initially wanted to make the dress for a convention, she realized that it was too soon, so she ultimately decided that her wedding was further out, which gave her more time to create the work of art that became her wedding dress.

Brennan put in an estimated 700 to 1000 hours of work on the piece, using more than 10 books. The elaborate project turned out exactly as it should have--flawless.

“I picked some of the ones I really like:

THE DRESS-MAKING PROCESS ‘The Canterbury Tales,’ one of my favorites, I made my bodice out of that,” Brennan said. “There’s boning and corsetry which is the stiff stuff that helps hold it up and for that... I used ‘Cells: The Building Blocks of Humanity.’ But I also used Shakespeare... a couple different books on artistry. I used Native American myths and legends, I used Dante’s ‘Inferno,’ which is actually Connor’s college version that he wrote in.”

Brennan’s mother taught her how to sew when she was younger.

“It sort of just came together,” she said.

lthough many people spend lots of time in the library, few actually take the time to roam the bookshelves. If they did, they might find themselves lost in a whole new world of imagination and discovery.

“If there is one thing I would like to do,” said Brennan “[It] is [to] encourage people to come in here so they can just sort of enjoy all the things we have for them to enjoy.”

Many hours went into fan-folding what would later become the train of the dress.

The train of the dress, though it had some fabric underneath it, primarly consisted of many fanfolded pages from various books.

The bodice of her dress was made using “The Canterbvary Tales” and the frame was made from “Cells: The Building Blocks of Humanity” which where all sewn together by hand.

The bottom half of the dress was constructed using different Shakespeare plays and a coffee table book on Monet .

Her head piece was made from “Where the Wild Things Are”, and the back of the bodice is made of pages from “Alice in Wonderland”.
