It is surreal to look back on one year-- a mere 365 days -- and realize just how much has happened. London hosted the Olympics. A Korean man started a worldwide dancing phenomenon. Overall, 2012 has been an insane year. And it has a lot more to show than simply one day in December...

How to Conquer the Dreaded Finals Week By Owyn Cooper and Rebecca Vickers

Do Go over Your Notes. Most likely, the stuff on your final will be on there. Drink Lots of Caffeine. But not so much that you will explode. Study with Friends. But try to get something accomplished instead of just talking. ;) Cocoa and Cram. If you are a Freshman you should have gone! Even though you are learning, you get free food. You win some, you lose some. Talk to Your Teachers. If you are struggling, regardless of what you may think, your teachers actually do not want to see you fail. Turn Off Your Phone. Your phone will miss you but your grades will thank you.

Don’t Don’t start a new show on Netflix. You will convince yourself that watching “How I Met Your Mother” is helping you study. If this happens, seek help right away. Don’t spend the whole weekend before finals hanging out with your friends. Don’t text while studying. Especially not that special someone. If they really love you, they will wait. Don’t be aware of the new songs that are “blowing up the charts.” If you do, it will be stuck in your head for the whole week or it will turn into a dance party, which I think we can all agree is for the end of finals. Don’t talk to your teacher the day before the final. Take responsibility and talk to them in advance. You will be less stressed and your teachers will, of course, like you more... giving you the edge. Don’t stress yourself out too much! Everything will be fine. Just figure out what works best for you to do your best, i.e. study methods.

A Night as a Homeless Teen

Principal Don Stensrud at Attention Home’s Sleep Out. Photo by Sharone Goldman.

By Shoshana Pollack Tonight, when it gets late, I will go home. I will brush my teeth, take a shower, and go to bed. You will probably do the same. Most people do this, and most people take it for granted. It seems pretty simple. After all, it is what most of us do. At least, that is what I used to think. Then I learned about Attention Homes, an organization to help homeless and runaway youth in Boulder County. Early on the morning of Friday, November 16th, around forty people could be found outside on the lawn between the First United Methodist Church of Boulder and the administrative office of Attention Homes. Some were still asleep, huddled in sleeping bags on top of collapsed cardboard boxes. Others could be seen walking sleepily towards the church, eager to get inside where it was warm. All forty people, including Fairview’s Principal Dr. Stensrud and Fairview student Hadley Dorn, had spent the night sleeping outside in the freezing cold. I had the privilege of joining them and participating in Attention Home’s Sleep Out, an annual event to raise awareness for youth homelessness in Boulder County. Many people consider Fairview “the rich kids school.” Even though we all know that not everyone at Fairview is rolling in cash, it is easy to fall into the trap of assuming that everyone is privileged and well off. In reality, there are Fairview students who are homeless. It can be hard to believe. Every single year, Attention Homes serves students from Fairview. There are Fairview students who do not have a place to go home to at night, do not have a bed, and some who do not have a family to support them. I spent one night sleeping outside. I am not going to pretend I suddenly know what it is like to be a homeless teenager, but it did open my eyes to a problem I barely knew existed in Boulder. Youth homelessness is a serious issue, even around here. When I woke up the morning of the 16th, I was cold, tired, and sore. Unsurprisingly, the last thing I wanted to do was go to school. Homeless youth have so much standing in their way. Not only do they lack a home, they lack safety and security. Many of them do not have parents to tell them what to do. But some of them still manage to go to school. I could barely manage school after one night outside, yet there are people who pull it off every day.

Pay Attention to Attention Homes By Natalie Bowes

Attention Homes is a shelter in Boulder that cares for runaway and homeless youth in the area. Katie Green is project manager at Attention Homes. Her job at the shelter is to raise awareness about homeless youth in Boulder County. As Project manager she oversees Sleep Out participants play backgammon as they try not to the Street Outreach Team, the dropin shelter and overnight shelter that freeze. Photo by Sharone Goldman. runs every night of the year. Youth can come to get shelter and case management, which may include trying to get back to their families or establish independence. Currently there are nine kids living in the overnight shelter. The shelter serves 75 kids a year in the overnight shelter and expect to serve a total of 433 kids. “Every kid is different. Some of the reasons that kids end up on the street are substance abuse in the home, emotional abuse, physical abuse, or any kind of trauma,” said Green. “Kids age out of foster care or social services. Kids that identify as lesbian or gay are sometimes not accepted by their families and there are problems in the home due to that. And also there are kids who are just plain kicked out of the house by their parents.” The shelter offers a variety of important resources to its occupants including help enrolling in school or doing homework, submitting job applications and writing resumes. Many kids may have a home situation unfit to live in, but it is comforting to know there is a place to seek refuge.

Boulder’s Teens Who Don’t Go Home at Night The Homeless Shelter By Melissa Cuddington

Unlike Attention Homes, the Boulder Homeless Shelter provides homeless adults with “safe shelter, food, support services, and an avenue to self-sufficiency.” The organization states on their website that: “we believe that all people deserve the basic necessities of life, and the community in which we live is called to serve this purpose.” The Homeless Shelter, located in North Boulder, serves up to 160 homeless people at a time. Many Fairview students volunteer at the Homeless Shelter on a monthly basis. This effort is organized through Fairview Student Council, with Junior Jessica Huang heading up the effort. “I coordinate a Homeless Shelter Breakfast Team that is comprised of both Fairview students and staff. We cook and serve breakfast for the Shelter residents on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month,” said Huang. These participants wake up at around 5:30 am about once a month to help out the homeless adult population in Boulder. “The shelter's core mission is to provide individuals who are homeless an avenue to self-sufficiency [unlike many other shelters around the country]. This shelter has case managers who work with the residents on securing a source of employment and income. Eventually, these individuals will no longer need or depend on the Shelter's services,” said Huang. Many of the homeless organizations in Boulder require people to be 18 years of age in order to volunteer. This is also the case with the Homeless Shelter, although there is one main outlet for youths that are interested in volunteering with the program. The morning breakfast is a good way for Fairview students to be involved in this amazing organization. According to the Homeless Shelter’s website,“with only a handful of paid program staff members on duty each night, volunteers play a crucial role in delivering services to up to 160 homeless residents. Their presence not only helps to expand the services that can be offered, but also brings fresh energy and enthusiasm to the staff and clients.”

Cardboard Boxes and North Face Jackets By Sharone Goldman Youth homelessness is an awful reality that means more than not having a roof over your head: It means loneliness, no support system, and huge vulnerability. My experience as a “homeless” youth during the Sleep Out event was definitely eye-opening. As a passionate backpacker who spends most summers under the stars, I figured one night alone would be a piece of cake. But this was November, and instead of expensive, R.E.I. thermal-insulated sleeping pads, the program gave me a cardboard box to sleep on. The entire night, I lay awake shivering, counting down the hours until dawn. I am not going to say that somehow I became enlightened about homelessness because I spent a few hours in the backyard of a church on a school night, but it made me just a bit more aware. I did not really spend a night homeless. I spent a night outdoors. It was chilly and uncomfortable. I did not sleep a wink. But I was safe and it was so, so temporary. The teenagers who actually deal with homelessness on a daily basis have to overcome so much adversity. I cannot imagine thriving and learning after spending nights consistently homeless. Shockingly, there are many teens- some of whom go to Fairview!- that do. Furthermore, society places them on the same playing field as all the youth who do have a safe place to go at night. I was inspired by the kindness, patience, and graciousness of the people who work at Attention Homes. It was encouraging to see so many adults who care. But there are so many teens who do not have any support and resources, and I hope citizens of Boulder can give their needs a greater priority.

How You Can Help By Shoshana Pollack

As surprising as it may seem, youth homelessness is a huge problem in Boulder County. As a student body, lets do what we can to help. If every student donated just one dollar, we could easily raise over 2,000 dollars for Attention Homes. Go to the Attention Homes Website, click on Donate, and give as much as you can, even if that means giving a dollar. Cookies And BlanketsSenior Women’s Club Helps Out With the Homeless Fairview Students Giving Back By Shoshana Pollack

“It’s a good time of year to give back,” said Taylor Kessock, Co-President of the Senior Womens Club. She and Co-Marketing manager Sarah Timm helped with a project to help the homeless in the community. Thirteen girls got togehter, baked over 500 cookies and made eight blankets. Dani Escobar, a memeber of the Senior Women’s Club, gave out cookies and blankets on her way to school. “When people saw me giving to the homeless, it made them want to give too,” she said. “Almost everyone around gave money.” It does not take much to help out. A dollar, a couple of hours making blankets or cookies, or donating a couple of items you do not need anymore. It is pretty simple and it might not seem like a big deal, but if everyone does a little bit, it can make a huge difference.

What is this Gangnam Style?

The first thing I thought when I looked at the video for Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was what on earth am I looking at? Why is this man dancing as if there is a horse? (There’s not a horse.) What is he saying? Why are all those people dancing with him? What is actually happening in that elevator? Where can one obtain a bright banana-yellow suit anyhow? Did you notice when the song totally stops for a few beats and then starts up right where you’re supposed to do that horse dance thing? People love that kind of thing, and this song does it several times. And that’s pretty much all I could say about the song when I first encountered it. I’ve always believed that I should work to understand something before making any sort of judgement about it. So I hit the Internet to see what I could learn. I discovered that Psy is an artist out of the K-Pop movement from Korea. I discovered that there IS a K-Pop movement from Korea. I discovered that the song is in Korean, hence why I could not understand it. I also learned that there is a Gangnam district in Seoul with a lavish lifestyle akin to what people think about the lifestyle in Beverly Hills. I learned that Psy might actually be making fun of the people who claim to live that Gangnam style. What’s most fascinating is the viral, world-wide sensation the song has become. Go ahead and search “Gangnam Style parody” on Youtube and you’ll see parodies starring everyone from the University of Oregon Duck to Mitt Romney to a father and his daughter dancing Gangnam Style in their living room. You’ll see flash mobs from all over the globe doing Gangnam Style. There are literally invisible horses everywhere that people are gleefully dancing upon. How is it that such a goofy, simple dance move and a catchy, totallystuck-in-my-head-for-hours song could sweep the globe so completely? Dare I say it has the power to unite us all? Is “Gangnam Style” the route to world peace? I’m not sure, but I can be certain that we’re not finished with this. Ready? Get your invisible horse: “Oppan Gangnam Style.”

For example, the Twister wrap features avocado and lettuce with “Native Chicken” in a whole wheat tortilla. For someone feeling more adventurous, the Earth Bowls offer a combination of flavors that are impossible to imagine, but are guaranteed to taste good. For example, the Rockin’ Moroccan Bowl features quinoa and Native Chicken (or tofu upon request) topped with cooked veggies, currants and almonds. These bowls are massive and filling, which should be expected with the price tags hovering around $10 each. In addition to healthy, vegan main dishes, Native Foods offers vegan desserts that lack dairy, cholesterol and refined sugars, while not sacrificing indulgent flavors. The drinks are the most exciting addition to each meal, as Native Foods features three delicious housemade beverages: Lavender Lemonade, sweetened with organ-

ic sugar, Wildberry Iced Tea, and Watermelon Fresca, both sweetened with organic agave. This visible-but-hidden restaurant found the right niche in Boulder, however even the non-vegans and non-quinoa-freaks of the town should not shy away from this quick, tasty, and healthy food option.

Cafe Aion is an open and bright restaurant that serves a variety of tapas and platters perfect to share with a large group. Although their menu changes frequently, one regular lunch dish is the tagine. Tagine is a mixture of fresh squash, chickpeas, and spices that can be put on flatbread. It is a bit on the pricier side, costing $14 for a semi-small portion, but completely worth it if you have the extra cash.

Another popular dish is the paella with rice, sausage, chicken, and muscles. This entree is big enough to share with two or three people and is presented beautifully. Cafe Aion serves food that may seem simple, but with every bite new flavors are experienced. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with a happy hour menu which has some of the same dishes but less expensive prices. The main complaint towards Cafe Aion is their steep prices coupled with small portions, but I would definitely recommend trying it out for a different experience than the traditional restaurants on The Hill.

To Ski or Not To Ski?

Opinions

By Elise Maclean Colorado’s snowy winter draws in tourists and residents to the mountains to enjoy a full day of skiing. Whether the day is sunny and warm, or windy and cold, skiing in Colorado is a must. According to Colorado Ski Country USA there are 29,426 acres of ski area, 220 lifts, and 1,762 trails at 21 resorts, so if you are into skiing or snowboarding, there is a sure guarantee that you will find a ski resort that you love. On October 17th, Arapahoe Basin kicked off the ski season with their season opening. Following A-Basin’s opening was the opening of Loveland. Does this make A-Basin the better place to ski? “It’s the best, there’s not too many lines and there is good terrain,” said Alan Sheuermann, junior. Loveland ski area sits atop the Continental Divide and averages 400” of snow per year. This is more than any Front Range or Summit County ski resort. “I like the runs [at Loveland] better than any other ski area”, said Ben Brooke, freshman. “Loveland is pretty great. I really like the park, but the backcountry is good too,” said Gabe Tavarez, junior. Eldora is only a short 39 minute drive from Boulder. Nathan Newbury said that he goes there the most because “it’s the closest.” According to USA Today, Vail Ski Resort “is the largest and most popular ski resort in the United States.” “It has a lot of terrain and I like the bowls,” said Ryan Mettler, junior. Vail Ski Resort has three terrain parks, seven bowls, 196 trails. Vail has three times the number of hotel rooms as Steamboat, which is ranked second best by USA Today. By December 15th, all ski resorts in Colorado will be open. The last to open is Buttermilk in Silverton. Now that all ski areas are open and running, don’t miss the opportunity to get out of the house and go skiing at your favorite resort.

Better vending machines. But another facet of Fairview’s inner workings has been pulsing through the veins of the student body. Some students argue that if the school schedule were to change to a four day school week, with longer weekends and ample time to finish school projects, students would be less stressed and earn better grades. The extra days off would have to be accounted for somewhere, so these students suggest that summer and winter break be axed altogether, asserting that without the gap in curriculum that summer and winter break bring, students would be able to retain more information. Would we be better off without semester breaks? Though we could all use an extra Sunday-workday as the fall semester comes to a close, would you be willing to trade your freedom after the semester to get it? Fairview students weigh in. Fairview students are set on keeping their rights to semester break, and argue that the importance of extended time to destress after several months at school outweighs the benefits of a shortened weekday.

I would be willing to give up winter and Thanksgiving break but I wouldn’t want to skip summer.” -Steele Mercer, Sophomore “Fairview gives us a lot of opportunities with off periods to get things done.” -Bianca Parato, Sophomore “I don’t want school year round, and I want to travel on breaks. I’m fine with going to school five days a week.” -Liz Query, Senior

Crisis

Infighting and Commercialism Threaten a Cherished Tradi tion By Eamonn Morris Christmas, no matter its origins or current manner of celebration, is supposed to be a bright spot in the otherwise cold and dark winter months; it’s a time to come together with the ones we love, and to give and receive gifts as expressions of goodwill. That is why it is so discouraging that the holiday season has become such a battleground. Every December we rush around constantly, deciding what to buy whom and where to get the best deal. Pundits on television duke it out as to who is in the wrong over the use of the words “Christmas” in their store displays. In reality, Christmas is not the eye of the storm of an otherwise gloomy winter; it’s a time of intense anxiety for almost everyone. The crisis Christmas is facing today is two-pronged. One is that people are sensitive about the holiday; after all, it is one of the most sacred days of the year for Christians, and its religious associations run very deep, although the holiday

has always been celebrated secularly as well. Another problem is that rampant consumerism is threatening to engulf Christmas’s more humble aspects. Christmas began as a celebration from the Christian faith. But throughout its history it has also been a secular holiday. Dickens’s famous Christmas Carol refers to church-related activities only once, and the celebrations within are much more in the spirit of the Yuletide of the ancient Germanic tribes (this is where we got Christmas trees from.) The pendulum has swung back and forth since then, but since the 1950s we have definitely been in a secular period. This is not a bad thing-- since people don’t feel excluded on religious grounds, they are able to celebrate a beautiful holiday regardless of their faith. But the approach has drawbacks: devout Christians feel that the masses, who tend to be more centrist, are gutting the sacred center from their holiday. We have to find a balance between the religious and sec-

ular approaches so that everyone feels included. I don’t think using the word “Christmas” in your ad is necessarily bad, but we also have to be careful not to push out people who love Christmas but are not all-in on the religious portion of the holiday.

this year. Then the true spirit of giving is gone, and we’re left with a soulless retail purchase frenzy that lasts a month. It’s obvious that something needs to change when it comes to Christmas, but I will not advocate an end to present-giving and community celebration any more than I will advocate for an “It is so discouraging that abandonment of the holiday’s more conthe holiday season has be- servative fundamentals. Ski Catch-up

Sports Fantasy Quiz By Luke Schneider and Cason McHose

By Brett Matissen

Boy oh boy are we out of snow. After the winter of 2009-2010, it feels as if winter is never coming back. I will still hold up my end of the bargain and say we will have an average ski season...after all, you have to keep your fingers crossed and do the snowdance NIGHTLY. So, terrain updates, Keystone opened up Flying Dutchman and Jackwhacker on Friday, November 30th. Copper opened additional terrain over our Thanksgiving Break. New lifts include the Super Bee Express, Timberline Express and the American Flyer. Breckenridge is still having difficulty opening due to the warm temperatures. The colder and drier the air, the easier it is to pump out snow. Locally, Eldora opened for the 2012-2013 ski season over break with access to Hornblower and International. All of the resorts have “white ribbons of death, so do not expect much. So, number one rule this year, do not waste your time with your fat powder skis, use the rock skis. We are all hoping for a storm to come through soon, so hold on tight!
