THE COVER: More Than A Chant

It’s hard to not have “I’m rich and white I must be a knight,” drilled into your mind as the opposing school chants it across the field. But that is not our true culture. We sent two reporters to ask students and faculty, “If you could describe the Fairview culture in one word, what word would you pick?” The adjectives that they chose are featured on the cover, and differ greatly from the stereotypes that surround our school. We believe that these words are what truly characterize our school instead of just a chant.We are a culture of individuals who each have a unique story to tell. Generalizing the socioeconomic status and race of Fairview students is not only unfair to those who do not fit the mold but blatantly untrue.

While Fairview is 74.4% caucasian, after exploring BVSD demographic data, we realized that Fairview is quite a bit more diverse than we may think. We are also changing.

In 2008, 85% of students identified as caucasian and 4% of students were on free and reduced lunch, a leading indicator for low-income families. Eight years later, 9.3% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Compared to four other large high schools in our district, we neither have the highest percentage of caucasian students nor the least on free or reduced lunch. However, there is so much more that defines Fairview than statistics.

To be a knight does not mean that you have to be rich or white. Our culture of acceptance and our “red and white” blood makes each student at home here with an identity that no chant can break.

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS: Rich. Privileged. White. Subaru-owner. Most of us have heard this stereotype that supposedly defines Fairview.

Yet these words can not define 2,153 students who come from drastically different backgrounds and experiences.

We derive much of our identities from our cultures, and much of our culture reflects who we are. Though we may have set out with this issue of the Royal Banner Newsmagazine to find out how our cultures define us, we instead found that on many levels, especially within high school, we have the power to craft a culture of our own.

To cultivate a culture of respect, we must learn to consider different perspectives. To cultivate a culture of understanding, we must listen more. If we don’t like aspects of our culture, it is our responsibility to change it. Culture is always developing and reshaping. It ecompasses everything from history, to traditions, to trends, to how we treat each other. What we choose to value shapes the world around us.

The Royal Banner gathers as many stories as we can to dig beyond the generalizations about our culture. For the past couple of issues we have focused on small but meaningful stories, hoping to illuminate the various experiences and opinions that contribute to our school’s diversity. Our goal for this issue is to ask big questions of every level of culture that unites Fairview. Do students feel safe at school? Why does Boulder cultivate a culture of entrepreneurs? What does it mean to be an American?

We encourage our readers to ask similar questions of their own cultures and consider the impacts culture has on how we interpret, interact, and innovate. As a student body, we get to decide what type of culture we want, and this is a power that we should not underestimate.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN AMERICAN?

America is changing. It’s not uncommon to appreciate and reconize diversity. No matter where you go, you are surronded by someone who has a different backegroud than youself.

Political issues involving social relations remain a popular topic with the integration of different cultures and perspectives.

What does it mean to be an American today? How do the changing demographics affect the American culture? Do people who immigrate here consider themselves Americans?

These questions affect so many issues and relations in this country today.

In an attempt to get a better understanding of this debatable topic, students and staff from all grades and backgrounds gave their perspectives on what it means to be an American, and how the culture in their eyes has changed.

“Because of all the diverse groups in America, we are able to have and contribute many different ideas, and therefore our culture is able to reflect and change from that diversity. ”

“[Being an American,] I would say somebody who was born in the United States of America who has grown up specifically in this culture… I’m Mexican and I don’t consider myself an American at all. I think I’ve just gotten used to the culture of like celebrating the Fourth of July, Christmas, Thanksgiving and stuff like that… When I think of an American, I think of someone who has blue eyes, someone that has blonde hair, but I also see different people from different backgrounds. They’re all different.”

“To be an American is a mess and I say that in a good way. It’s so many different things all at once. The best thing about being an American is that we are constantly growing and constantly changing.

There’s a piece about being an American of striving to be your best and with that said, that means we should not be satisfied about where we are…. I think being an American means we should be trying to be the best in all realms. The American culture is always changing and that’s a good thing. We’re always do things that every generations look back and thinks of the ‘good ol days’ and that it was better back then. But it really isn’t.

We’re always making changes.“

“From my point of view, I think being an American is to be accepting, open minded but also to have pride in your country. American culture is always changing, but I think it’s changed more drastically in the past year than ever seen before in a one year increment, considering the fact that there’s a nationalist or maybe a populist even in the White House, so I think that’s kind of polarized the nation and changed our culture to be a little more, at least for some people, a little more negative and a little more exclusive. Being an American is more than having a U.S. passport; it transcends your place of birth and citizenship status. To be an American is to withhold values and ideals that better both yourself and your community. To be an American is to have a voice, to be able to protest and express your opinions, whatever they may be. Above all, to be an American is to be kind and be accepting; to care for others even if you disagree with them - that's what counts.

There has been a lot of division in our country regarding politics, especially in the last year, which served as the inspiration behind this piece. I have seen drawings and paintings similar to this, and after hearing one specific story, I was motivated to recreate it. The story was about a girl who’s hijab was taken off in school, while students yelled about their actions being justifiable in “Trump’s America”. I was left speechless after reading that… it was shocking to me that someone could blatantly disregard another person’s beliefs. On both sides of the election, people have been dehumanizing others based on not only their political affiliation, but their religion. -Ellie Troller 5/16

SAFE CULTURE SAFE SCHOOL

by Sara McCrea // @sara_mccrea Five years ago, a boy came to TAG coordinator Terry Bradley’s office and explained that he wanted to go to his senior prom with his friends but would not go unless he could wear a dress. Bradley’s first priority was to make sure everyone was informed that he was doing it for the right reasons, and that his actions wouldn’t disrupt his or anyone else’s good time.

They walked upstairs and found Assistant Principal Sarah DiGiacomo.

He said,“I just want to alert you all that I want to go to Prom with my friends and I want to wear a dress. I want you to

Without missing a beat, Ms. DiGiacomo said, “What color dress are you going to wear?”

“It was one of those moments for me that I was most proud of working at Fairview, being in the environment that we’re in, and having administrators that support our students in all ways,” said Bradley. “It was a beautiful example of holding a space for students, whatever their unique situations are, and realizing that they just want to belong, they just want to be accepted, and they just want to be who they are...It ended up being a fabulous, amazing night.”

Fairview faculty is constantly making efforts to create a safe environment for all students, yet in a time where minority students may feel targeted by the government, the question that must be asked is, “Are they doing enough?”

Boulder Valley Superintendent recently released a statement to district leadership, reaffirming BVSD’s commitment to support transgender students and defend their rights to use a restroom which aligns with their gender identity, not their biological sex.

“Our policies and practices meet our community norms and needs of our students,” Bruce Messinger told the Daily Camera. “It’s never been about a legal issue for us, but about being supportive of our students.”

Messinger also addressed “uncertainty and fear among some members of the community regarding federal immigration policy” in an email to BVSD parents, guardians and staff, stating that, “Our district celebrates and values the rich diversity in our community” and undocumented immigration status has no impact on a child’s education.

It’s hard to miss the new circular stickers adorning teachers’ doors that read, “Undocumented, unafraid. Student Safe Space.” In the 600 hall, signs in a multitude of languages say, “No matter where you’re from, you are WELCOME!” And on the Amnesty International bulletin board, a neon yellow poster board seems to scream, “Fight like a knight for human rights!”

to ensure that Fairview remains a safe space for students of all races, ethnicities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, socio-economic backgrounds, religious and political beliefs, and abilities.

“It doesn’t matter what language you speak. If you’re here in America, this is where you should feel safe to be, and you should feel proud of your heritage.”

President Trump’s immigration ban and recent legislation on transgender bathroom use has made Fairview faculty and students evaluate the role of educators and administrators in political tension.

While some teachers have chosen to work political discourse into their curriculums, others rely on their material as a much needed distraction from the polarized political environment. But as former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, “Effective teaching and learning cannot take place unless students feel safe at school.”

For two weeks in February, different students recited the Pledge of Allegiance in ten different languages, which Principal Don Stensrud said was a way to start looking at all of the cultures present in Fairview.

“It doesn’t matter what language you speak. If you’re here in America, this is where you should feel safe to be, and you should feel proud of your heritage,”

Stensrud said.

While students’ native languages differ, the variations of the Pledge served as a reminder that as Americans we have more in common than we may think.

“Except for our students who are Native Americans, we are all immigrants. We may not be immigrants from two months ago, but we may be immigrants from 20 years ago or 80 years ago, so we need to make sure that we are keeping all kids safe,” Stensrud said. “Every kid is a kid, and every kid has a right to be here.”

Stensrud said that he observed a classroom in which they were dealing with some racial issues in the material. Some students began giggling at an off-color joke, and looked across the classroom at an African American student. The student said, “Why did you look at me?”

The teacher acknowledged that it was a legitimate question, but then moved on by continuing to lecture.

“That could have been a very powerful teaching moment, if they had taken two or three or four more steps,” said Stensrud. “We have to realize that it’s okay that as teachers we take the time to work through the conversation. Everybody was fine, but we needed to have the conversation. Those are the moments that are uncomfortable, but we have to use them to grow.”

Social studies teacher Daniel Niedringhaus encourages his students in his Politics and Problems class daily to share their views on controversial current events.

“It’s incredibly important,” Niedring-

“Conversations that you hear on television are different now, conversations that you hear at home are different now, and the conversations on the street are different now,” said Lupinacci. “We’re seeing an uptick of aggression and threats on certain segments of our population. Our whole society is trying to figure things out. We’re seeing an uptick in students of things that I haven’t heard in a long time

and wish to never really hear again.”

Lupinacci added that despite the uptick, she has also seen Fairview students cultivating a culture of tolerance.

“Everybody feels safe here,” said Terry Bradley. “I know there’s bullying in our school. There’s bullying in every school.

But of late, and since the election, I was prepared to hear more of it, and I have not.”

Counselor Matt Mowen, the man behind the “Student Safe Space” stickers, hopes that people would see the sticker and know that he will do whatever he can to to help them.

“I’m a public employee, but those are my values,” Mowen said. “No one is making us do this, but this is who I want to be. This is who I want my children to be.

We’re here because we care about people.

It doesn’t matter where you’re from, it matters that you’re a person.”

Some students have expressed concern that the posters and stickers posted in the halls are a form of the school overstepping their political impartiality, but Dean of Students Jim Lefebvre argues that keeping undocumented students safe is a separate issue completely.

High school is thought to be made up of strict social cliques that put labels on everyone. There are band geeks, math nerds, popular kids, and musicians just to name a few. But does Fairview fall victim of this classification system?

I am a dancer, swimmer, tennis player, part of Net-Zero, NHS, Knight Crew, and an IB student. You can’t describe me in one word or put me in one category. Growing up I’ve had friends that had their “thing” and that was that, but not with me.

I was thinking about just how many subcultures there are here, and decided to ask around to see if people felt the same way about identity as I do.

“There are a lot of different subcultures, but also a lot of mixed culture where there’s a combinations of theatre kids,

I know that there are groups of people in Fairview that I’ve never met before. People who I don’t share any common activities with, but would still love to meet.

I decided to go and talk to Mrs. Lupinacci to get a second opinion from an adult’s point of view to see how it differed from a student’s.

“I’ve noticed that a lot of kids can become very insulated and stay within their niche,” said Lupinacci.

“You don’t really find a lot of choir kids that are athletes, so you could say there is segregation between the arts and sports because you usually try to put most of your time into one set group,” said junior Luka Visnjic.

Maybe what we chose to do with our time is what separate us all into these different groups. Still, I personally want to meet as many people as possible in all different subcultures because I believe it gives you a larger perspective of the different opinions and passion in our community. Time doesn’t seem to be a large part of it.

So there you have it. Fairview’s culture is more or less excellence. It is not defined by being rich or white or an IB kid or a JV athlete. It’s just about doing your best at whatever you want, and trying and failing and trying again and succeeding. The Fairview culture is a culture of growth and experience and I am so lucky to be apart of it.

BOULDER STARTUPS

oulder used to be famous for its hippy and carefree vibe. Though there are still plenty of kombucha drinkers, Boulder is now a hotspot for new innovators and it hosts a culture where new business startups thrive. The innovative culture of Boulder trickles down to the younger generation, including Fairview students.

“Boulder is unique in many aspects,” business teacher Michael Mowen said. “It brings a lot of young, innovative, smart thinkers, and it brings them together into a networking style supportive environment. It allows for these people to interact and… build up these businesses that have become fairly successful.”

Mr. Mowen thinks socioeconomics plays a huge factor in the success of these businesses.

“One thing Boulder has is wealth, so there’s money available and there [are] venture capitalists who are willing to invest in these companies.”

Sean Maher is the CEO of the Downtown Boulder Partnership, which coordinates with landlords to help businesses get licences approved. According to Maher, the high socioeconomic status of Boulder

can be detrimental to small businesses.

“The negative is that it means Boulder is more expensive, so what actually happens to some companies is that once they start growing in Boulder, they move to Denver because it’s cheaper,” Maher said.

“The culture of the region is very inclusive and inviting to other people.”

However, Jose Vieitez, the Co-Director of Boomtown Accelerator, a company which helps entrepreneurs launch their businesses, claims that “60% of the companies that go through Boomtown are not from Colorado, and of those that come from out of town, 80% end up staying here.”

The abundance of local businesses in Boulder comes from the local employees at tech companies such as IDM, Google, and Twitter, who usually have an innovative mindset.

“The fact that we have a lot of successful tech companies in Boulder has created a lot of spin off companies of employees who go off and do their own thing,” Maher said.

CU graduates also contribute to Boulder’s role in startup culture.

“CU produces thousands of grad students who don’t want to leave Boulder,” Maher said. “So they figure out a way to start a business.”

The breathtaking backdrop is not the only reason why entrepreneurs are drawn to Boulder; there is also a great support system and sense of community.

“The culture of the region is very inclusive and inviting to other people,” Vieitez said. “Whenever someone comes here, 10/16

people are willing to help that company get connected and make them feel like this is their home.”

Boulder has developed a sense of community that is attractive to many new businesses. There are a number of organizations in Boulder, including Boomtown Accelerator, that support startup companies, financially. They also help companies by providing their professional advice and input.

“That’s part of our culture where people are very open to supporting others. In other cultures, unless you can help them or you can pay them, they are not going to help you,” Maher said.

Mr. Vieitez, Co-Director and Co-Founder of Boomtown Accelerator, saw a need in the region for more support for entrepreneurs.

“The goal is to empower entrepreneurs, and to be able to execute their vision for their company,” Vieitez said. “Our goal is to give all the entrepreneurs the tools and resources they need to grow their companies and to build successful businesses which then can impact the region.”

Boomtown has helped 70 companies, and around 25 within the last year.

“I think Fairview is a product of what’s happening in Boulder.”

Boulder’s startup culture is reflected within the Fairview community. Because of our encouraging environment, several alumni and current students have started their own successful businesses.

“I think Fairview is a product of what’s happening in Boulder and it’s an example of Boulder in that there’s just a lot going

Living in Boulder, students are exposed to a local business-friendly and supportive environment at a young age.

“FHS is a great place, and it’s a very supportive place… if kids have ideas, they have the ability to pursue these ideas,” Mowen said. “There’ a lot of clubs, and there’s a lot of organization to help kids find their passions. A lot of entrepreneurial ideas and the growth of these businesses is based on passion.”

“What inspired me was that I’m really into clothing and fashion... so I decided to express my creativity.”

Alumnus, Ryan Atallah (who graduated in 2012) is the CTO and Co- Founder of ClearGraph, a tech company which “provides enterprise search solutions to make data accessible to business users on a massive scale” according to their Facebook page. Alumnus, Lucas Siegel (who graduated in 2009) spoke in front of the Harvard Business School and is the Co-Founder of AlternaScript which sells over- the- counter drugs. Alumnus, Kai Kloepfer (who graduated in 2016) created a “smart gun” with finger print recognitions. Alumna Maddie Leh (who graduated in 2014) started her own cupcake

business. In addition, freshman, Tucker Catlin carries on the Fairview reputation for business founders, and created his own hoodie business, Blakkout Boulder.

“What inspired me was that I’m really into clothing and fashion and so are most of my friends, so I decided that it wasn’t that hard to make clothing, and I decided to express my creativity,” Catlin said.

Similar to the Boulder community, Fairview is filled with supportive students and faculty.

“I do find that [my friends and teachers] are very supportive. My friends are always willing to help me out and they all buy shirts, and it’s really nice to have them there to support me and help,” Catlin said.

However, there are some challenges that come with starting a business at such an early age.

“My age does get in the way sometimes, especially with opening bank accounts… most of those services require you to be 18, so it’s kind of hard to get around that, and I definitely had to have some help from my parents,” Catlin said.

“Managing school and making clothing at the same time is hard, especially with homework and sports,” Catlin said. “That was probably the hardest part, still making new designs constantly and getting stuff and releasing stuff, while also trying to focus on school and sports.”

Maple Leaf Massacre On February 25th, things got MontREAL when the world’s largest supply of maple syrup was attacked by terrorists in Canada.

The culprits, three people, were able to infiltrate the compound using their brand new fake passports from Somalia. They passed into the center of the storage facility and were able to plant bombs in some of the syrup vats before being caught by security and forced off the premises. The bombs exploded soon after, causing widespread pancake.

“A few fires got going real good. So me and my man Edward had to go out and fight the thing. We were just getting going and it all stopped because the syrup went and dowsed it all,” said William Hender, a first responder who was on sight at the incident.

The Bratwurst Battle The latest in terrorist attacks around the world happened merely a week ago. Due to Germany’s totally crazy policy of letting refugees in instead of banning them, a group of picnickers were brutally attacked by ISIS. The picnickers, a group comprised of the club called “Seniors Can Still be Cool People”, had decided to have an outdoor grill in the Bavarian Alps. With classic bratwursts on the grill, the group decided to frolick in the grass and drink beer.

However, the cheer was soon crushed when a group of refugee ISIS people ran up to them, stole their bratwursts off the grill, and began chucking them at the elders. The elders began to flee and scatter in all directions.

“The sausages were flying everywhere so we just decided to run away. I got a bratwurst in my hair and the sausage juice decided to drip down my luscious locks of hair.”, said Karl Müller, an elder who fell victim to the Bratwurst Battle.

These incidents are not mere domestic crimes, they are ISIS attacks all over the world. If Angela Merkel takes no action to stop more Bratwurst Battles from occurring, she should be removed from power.

Conclusion All of the very scary immigrants have shown themselves to actually be ISIS and evil people in these totally real stories of terrorism around the world. If we don’t stop the refugees and ban all of them then we will all be killed like they were in the Bratwurst Battle, Maple Leaf Massacre, Bowling Green Massacre, and the Swedish Slaughter. Sneaky liberals have allowed ISIS into America for too long.

Social media. The Webster dictionary defines it as “a form of electronic communication through which users can create online communities to share information, ideas, messages, and other content.” But to our society, it’s more than that. It’s choosing the perfect profile picture, stressing about the number of likes we get, chatting with internet friends, comparing filters, comparing friends, comparing lives, updating ourselves constantly, cultivating your ideal self one post at a time. It gives us a way to control how we’re seen, something generations before us never had.

As millennials, we are navigating and creating a community of our own via Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. About sixty percent of Instagram users are young adults, so as the majority we are governing the establishment of online culture.

With this power over social media, we’ve created our own constantly evolving set of

not to talk to strangers, we are reminded not to chat with people we don’t know online.

But this doesn’t mean social media isn’t just as prominent in their lives.

As a teacher, Boyer believes we are missing out on a great opportunity.

“I think that there is great potential to use social media within an academic setting but the nature of public education is not ready to use it,” said Boyer.

“When you get to unregulated emails and unsupervised meeting areas, there’s a lack of control. There’s a lack of accountability so now you’re living up to the standards of only the students’ moral code as well as the teachers’ moral code to abide by. I don’t believe we have that trust,” said Boyer.

With all the positive effects of social media our world appreciates–the spreading of ideas and cultures, the possibility of further developing our classroom–we are also aware of the downsides.

“Social media has a negative side but everything in the world has a negative side,” said Boza.

The students I spoke to were quick to recite a long list of laws: how many Snapchats are acceptable to have on your story, the number of likes you get compared to your follower count, what’s considered an “annoying caption,” the list goes on.

“I feel like I’m annoying if I have two snapchat stories up at once,” said Grace Tompkins. “I went to the Justin Bieber concert and I had three on and I was like ‘everyone’s gonna hate me tomorrow.”
