CHANGE.

Freshman to senior year. Braces to nose piercings. Gun laws to gun reform. From one standardized testing acronym to another. Renovations to revolutions in political ideology.

Change is many things. It’s difficult, fueled by passion, ushered by time, beautiful by its destination. We cultivate these changes and they affect our community in nearly every aspect. In this issue our staff chose to focus on the how and why.

The fight to bring change to gun policy has consumed the nation. From Parkland, Florida, to Washington, to our very own football field, students fought in protest and stood together to voice their own beliefs. Teenagers are leading the fight to bring on a new type of change, no matter their political affiliation.

Our halls are about to begin their own transformation. Starting with construction this summer, language arts will move to what is currently the cafeteria and 300 hallway, intensive learning and counseling will move to the 800 hallway, and other modifications will occur.

From CSAP to TCAP to PARCC and now the PSAT and SAT, not only have the different standardized tests changed but also students’ attitudes towards them.

Looking back on these past four years, seniors can see and feel all the tangible ways they’ve changed.

Our community has changed, in many ways, and we hope that those reading this issue will see just how important change is to this school.

RENOVATIONS The changes coming to the school in the next year

BY ELLA WAWRZYNEK Starting during spring break and through August 2019, RTA Architects will renovate parts of the school to improve both security and the use of space with a budget of roughly $20 million.

This will be the fourth time since the school was built in 1970 by the Hobart D. Wagner Association that the school will be renovated. The 1996 bond expanded the science hallway and added the library, and the 2008 bond redid administration, added the new wing of the 600 hall, and added windows to make the senior balcony the senior lounge.

“The biggest change is the library,” said Terry Bradley, the TAG Coordinator and former Fairview Student. “We didn’t have that gorgeous huge sun-filled library, we had what were called ILCs, Individualized Learning Centers.”

The spaces that will be redone or updated in the 2018 bond are being done so for different reasons.

Next year the hot lunch will be served where the opening of the 300 hall is now, and there will be seating and a window where the police annex is. The triangle lockers will also be taken out of the student center, and new furniture and more skylights will be added.

“Some of the places where kids kind of hang and congregate, we’re going to add some natural light there,” said Stensrud.

Language Arts

The language arts department is moving to the bottom of school, with double doors

from the new cafeteria into it. There will be approximately 10 language arts classrooms, and they will occupy the space where the current cafeteria is, the area where the drafting room is, the film and newsroom, and where the current business classroom is. The catering classroom will remain, but the back stairs to art will be removed.

“I’m hoping that when they move us down there maybe I’ll have a window,” said language arts teacher Angela Hunt. “But I heard that they’ll probably just put me in a storage closet, like I already am in. But seriously, that’s what I’m hoping, because

The floor of the cafeteria is already gone, and construction was supposed to begin over spring break, but has been delayed.

Students will get hot lunch from food carts in the student center for the rest of the current school year.

The 800 Hall and Office

Some special education will move to the outer edge of the 800 hall, where rooms 811 through 813 are now.

Some of the biggest changes include the front office and counseling center, mostly for security reasons. Counseling is moving upstairs to the 800 hall, and will connect to the main office. The post-grad/counseling and career center (CCC) will move to the

center area in the 800 hall, where 844 and the connected offices are. The IB office will move to where the offices in room 855 are now, by the main stairs to the 600 hall, where the original IB office was.

Counseling is moving to the top of the school so if visitors come they cannot walk throughout the whole school.

“We’ve seen [someone] come in this way.

Anyone coming to see counselors, admin, or IB have to come in this way,” said Stensrud. “So multiple sets of eyes on you as you go through.”

The security desk will be where the front desk is right now, and the campus monitors will be able to buzz people into the school from the anteroom. If a suspicious looking person walks in, or someone comes in making threats, security can hide behind and bolt some doors in the office, and the only place for the person to go is

“Makes us a little more secure,” said Stensrud. “That’s part of the security stuff, every school has to do that.”

Security

Next year, the inside doors will lock after the first half hour of school, as will the back doors, but students will have swipe cards in their student IDs to unlock the doors if they are coming any other time of day.

Boulder High School and Broomfield High School have already implemented this system.

Right now there are 2.8 security positions held by 4 people, but there might be funding for another security guard who watches the 38 outside cameras. Security will also be able to lock any door from the security station, and administrators will be able to lock the doors from any computer.

According to Stensrud, there is a 95% chance of getting 80 cameras in common areas (such as the halls, cafeteria, student center and gym) that security will watch, and that will wirelessly link to the police in case of an emergency situation where the police need real time knowledge of a situation in the school. The cameras would also link to some admin, such as Stensrud, Jim Lefebvre (the Dean of Students) and Ross Sutter (Assistant Principal), who could access the footage 24/7, even from their houses, in case an alarm went off in the middle of the night.

The Student Resource Officer will move to the current IB office, and will most likely have a gun safe for their rifle (right now they have to leave long rifles in their car, which is inefficient in the event of a school shooter or other time imminent threat in the school).

Fine Arts

I had to make a tough decision. We could have shut down the auditorium right after spring break, and then we’d be done by August 1st. The ramifications of that are no pops show, no final band, orchestra or choir concerts, and there’s no place to do the awards nights,” said Stensrud. “If you take out the back side of the year you take all those things away from kids.”

The green room will also become one big room with a door onto the stage, so students do not have to walk out through the hall to get onto the stage. The green room can also be used as a classroom.

“

The auditorium is getting entirely redone, with all new seats, stage, lights and sound system. The renovation of the auditorium will take 5 months, so it will not be complete until partway through next school year. However the decision to not begin the renovation over spring break was conscious.

The art rooms will be combined with the area where special ed is currently to become one big art galleria, with 2 to 3 classes happening at a time. The upstairs art will stay the same, with glass windows looking down on the rest of the art classes.

Miscellaneous Changes

The senior lounge will remain, as will the senior lot. After spring break some of the staff parking will move from next to the kiln to behind the softball field, but the number of spaces will not change.

The spiral stairway from the senior locker bank to counseling will be removed, and the counseling offices will become a custodial storage, a teacher lounge and the business teacher’s office. The business classroom will move to the current CCC. The mat room will also become a multi purpose sports room, like a “24 hour sport facility” according to Stensrud. The weights and bikes will move up and be in the same room.

The outside changes will be small, only a tiny little press box at the 50 yard line of the football field with an announcer, a new sound system that includes speakers pointed to the senior lot and field, and some rooftop units.

The official and cultural changes to standardized testing in Colorado

BY EMMA O’LEARY AND KINDRA RODEN The standardized testing in Colorado has undergone several changes in recent years, including the introduction of the PSAT 9 which will begin this April. There has also been a general change in the public’s attitude towards testing.

The test for the Freshman is the PSAT 9, sophomores will take the PSAT 10, and Juniors will take the SAT and the CMAS science test.

“The state assessment system, as well as those at the local level, are evolving,” said the Assessment Unit of the Colorado Department of Education in an email.

The interim superintendent of BVSD, Dr. Cynthia Stevenson, has been encouraging BVSD students to “take the test” to increase BVSD’s recent low participation rates.

“For the district, I think [the purpose is] to see how well their students are retaining the information [...] and also to see what the teachers need to work more on,” said freshman Trinity Rieck. “For the students, [the purpose is] probably to lessen their anxiety about tests, [...] also so then the students know what they need to work on for the actual SAT so they don’t bomb it and have to take it 4 times.”

Rieck is taking the PSAT 9, but only because her parents will not allow her to opt out. “[If I had the choice] I would not take it because I have really bad test anxiety and so it stresses me out a lot more than it needs to,” Rieck said.

According to Assistant Principal Rose Lupinacci, who is in charge of testing at Fairview, many students do not see the purpose of the CMAS science test and have come to her with questions about it.

“The CMAS, I have to say, is still a hard conversation [to have],”said Lupinacci, “It’s a hard sell.”

In November of the 2014-15 school year many Fairview seniors protested the CMAS social studies test.

Rachel Perley was one of the leaders of this protest, and according to Perley, there were three main reasons behind their protest: the time that the tests took away from school,

“The CMAS, I have to say, is still a hard conversation [to have].” the fact that the test results would not be available for seniors until after graduation, and how the tests did not effectively test the students’ knowledge.

“The tests and example questions we found online were not effective measures of what we knew, nor were they good measures of our teachers’ skills,” Perley said in an email.

“It’s a lot of time that we’re taking away from learning new things,” Rieck said about the standardized tests.

However, according to Lupinacci, the CMAS science test has been cut down by

30 minutes, and the PSAT 9 is 3 hours long, while PARCC used to be 10 hours long.

In 2015, seniors in Colorado were no longer required to take the CMAS test.

“I think it was [a direct result of the protest],” Lupinacci said. “It was a dramatic response.”

“I think that the decision to get rid of CMAS testing for seniors was a result of many different pressures that the state legislators felt during the time of the test,” Perley said. “It is likely that our protest at Fairview and its publicity played a small part in encouraging this decision, [...] however, it definitely took the entire community’s support to push the legislature to repeal the tests.”

While many community members supported the protest of the CMAS test for seniors, some members of the community might be using the scores of these standardized tests, according to Stevenson.

Stevenson said in an email that testing scores are used by “community members [...] to compare our schools with neighboring districts.”

However, Lupinacci said that she thinks that parents use of the test data and ratings has changed.

“Back in the day, when you had the CSAP, more people looked at those ratings much more. They [reflected] some data that people respected,” Lupinacci said. “I don’t think [people] look at them as clearly as they used to.”

shifting the attitude towards testing at Fairview. According to Lupinacci, more students question whether or not they should take the test, and participation rates are lower than they used to be.

The Assessment Unit stated in an email that “Fairview’s participation rate decreased between school year 2013-2014 and school year 2014-2015,” as a result of the protest.

However, they did not indicate whether the protest impacted any aspects of state testing policy.

The deadline to officially opt out passed in early March, and with the current numbers the participation rates for this year’s assessments coincide with the predictions of the CDE and the hopes of Stevenson.

“When the shift was made from CMAS [PARCC] to PSAT in 10th grade two years ago, there was a significant increase in the number of students participating in the as-

sessment,” the Assessment Unit said in an email, “If 9th grade students re-engage with the state testing system in a similar way, participation rates should increase.”

At this moment, we do not have the data from this year to know how the shift to PSAT 9 has impacted the participation rate.

However, Perley wrote in the email that the PSAT tests may not cover important information that students are learning.

“I think that standardized tests should test skills such as critical thinking and communication rather than fact recall,” Perley said.

While the new tests may have flaws, Lupinacci sees that the have improved upon the older tests.

“I think with this new series, [...] you’re going to see a reemergence of some data that’s going be really important to look at,” Lupinacci said. “Now that you have this progression, I think that you’ll have a better system.”

THE NEW WAVE OF PROGRESSIVISM How the progressive movement is impacting the political landscape of the United States and what it means

BY CARTER HANSON Since Donald Trump’s election victory in 2016, hundreds of democratic activists and disaffected voters have joined the political fray and announced their campaigns for Congress. This new wave of progressivism, built on grassroots activism and anger at the current political system, is sweeping across the nation, from rural Pennsylvania to Houston, Texas, and has the potential to impact the 2018 midterm elections in November.

Many of these new candidates are campaigning on the platform of fighting the party establishment and building the progressive movement on “grassroots activism.”

“I feel like Washington has gotten really disconnected from the rest of us, and that, to me, has been one of the real problems that has led to what’s going on here,” said Mark Williams, a Boulder native running for Congress.

Williams, an example of the burgeoning “progressive movement,” is running for Congress in Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District, the constituency where Boulder and Fort Collins are located.

His defining issue as a candidate is staunchly anti-establishment.

“Money in politics is the most important issue, not just in Colorado but the country.

In Colorado, if you want to put a finer hair on it, it’s oil and gas money in politics. That’s the unique spin in Colorado,” said Williams.

In fact, in order to fulfill this resolve, Williams has refused to take any money from PACs or corporations.

“For me, money in politics is the bane of our existence and I believe it’s led us to where we are,” said Williams, “I’m not taking any money from corporate PACs. I won’t take money from corporate PACs. I’m building this from the grassroots up because I think the people need to lead.”

This has been both a blessing and a curse for Williams’s campaign, as it has helped him attract anti-establishment voters but also has made it harder for him to financially compete with Joe Neguse—the mainstream Democratic candidate who is running against Williams for Colorado District 2— who has accepted corporate money.

However, Williams continues to stand by his resolve to refuse corporate money because he believes that the issue is too important for him not to address, even if it is harder for him to financially compete.

“If I were of the philosophy of the ends justify the means, I would take the money. But I’m not of that philosophy,” Williams said.

“I think too many people have been in that school of thought where the ends justify the means, and I refuse to abide by that because that just leads to the same kind of garbage.”

This stance on campaign finance is what sets Williams apart from Neguse. As a staunchly progressive candidate running against a mainstream candidate, Williams is using his distance from the mainstream as a campaigning issue to attract voters who have been alienated by mainstream partisanship.

People like Mark Williams are joining the political landscape throughout the entire nation. In fact, during this election cycle, 209 Democratic candidates for the US House of Representatives raised $5,000 or more prior to June 30, 2017, compared to 28 Republicans. In contrast, in 2016 only 44 democratic candidates raised $5,000 or more prior to June 30 of 2015 compared to Republican’s 28 candidates.

Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 Presidential election cajoled many of Bernie Sanders’s supporters into taking political ac-

tion and therein forming the “New Wave of Progressivism.”

“I have not done politics as a career: This is new to me. The beginning of all this happened in November of 2016 when Donald Trump got elected,” said Williams. “I saw what happened in 2016 in terms of the splintering of the Democratic Party, and I saw what happened in 2016 in terms of the splintering of the United States.”

Williams, like many other progressives, is relying on Bernie supporters, disaffected Democrats, and unaffiliated and independent voters to elect him to office.

Though this strategy may be less effective in some parts of the country, in Boulder and the rest of Colorado District 2, this may prove to be just what Williams needs to be elected to Congress.

“You look at 2016 and the Democratic Primary; Boulder County, and Larimer County—the biggest counties here—went almost 70–30 for Bernie,” said Williams. “That shows there’s a lot of folks in this district who are interested in a different kind of political dialogue. They’re interested in a candidate who’s not necessarily a mainstream establishment candidate.”

Some progressive candidates have a real shot at winning in other states as well. Democrats are beginning to put forward candidates around the country in areas where they have not previously had a chance of being successful.

This is especially true in the South where Democrats and progressives are fighting for states such as Texas and Georgia, which, following the shocking victory of Democrat Doug Jones in the 2017 Alabama Senate Race, could be contestable.

In Georgia, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and progressive Stacey Abrams has a real shot at defeating her Democratic Primary competitors and, subsequently, the Republican challenger. Abrams is the first African-American woman to be Georgia state House minority leader. She is aiming to unseat Republican control over the state governorship of Georgia, which has lasted for fifteen years.

minority turnout and by getting the entire Democratic voting base to vote in force, she can beat her Republican opponent. In 2016, Trump won Georgia by only five points, paving the way for a possible upset.

In Texas, Democratic Senatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke may have a chance at defeating Senator Ted Cruz during the 2018 midterms.

O’Rourke’s policy regarding campaign finance is similar to Williams’s, as they both have refused to take PAC money. However, O’Rourke has still raised enough money to support an aggressive statewide race against Senator Cruz.

With a combination of shifting demographics, Senator Cruz’s low approval rating, and the fact that Trump won only Texas by nine points in 2016, O’Rourke has a real chance at competing in the 2018 midterms.

As the midterms draw closer, the new wave of progressivism will face a real test confronting both the Democratic establishment and the Republican Party.

Only time will tell to see if this wave will shock the political system or relent against the orthodox establishment.

GENERATION CHANGE From Florida to Fairview, students are leading the way to change in gun policies

BY HENRY LARSON AND EMI AMBORY Throughout history, high school age students have often taken action regarding issues that dominate the national conversation.

“It comes in waves. [Fairview] had a walk out about the Iraq war in the early 2000s and student-run protests about standardized testing,” said history teacher Amy Paa-Rogers. “When there’s something that fuels the student population they have a passion and they seize it.”

Young activist’s campaigns are often effective.

“

“It grabs the attention of every adult in the country.”

“When students come out [to protest], it grabs the attention of every adult in the country. There’s a sense of shame adults have when they see kids trying to change policy. It’s a wakeup call,” said Raffi Mercuri, a speaker at Fairview’s #Enough Rally on March 14th.

From the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Littleton, CO, to to the more recent Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL, gun violence in schools is all too familiar to current high school students.

“This movement has been building up for a while because of these previous shootings and the Parkland shooting was the last straw,” said #Enough Rally organizer senior Ayesha Rawal.

Gun violence is a prevalent threat in schools across the nation and is a threat specifically to young students. Since it directly affects them, some students believe it is essential that students use their voices and foster change.

“The discussion needs to start here,” said junior student activist Gray Freeman. “It’s important that we are the pioneering voices of [the gun reform] movement because we understand how it feels to go to school with the constant threat of a school shooting.”

Even though this issue involves the safety of high school students, some adults still are not sure of teenagers’ ability to form educated, individual opinions and represent those opinions in the polls.

Stoneman Douglas students were flown out to Fairview for the #enough rally.

“Politicians are underestimating us tremendously because […] historically we don’t have a large voter turnout,” said Stoneman Douglas sophomore Talia Rumsky.

Some believe it is a difficult time to be involved in the national discussion.

“If we were speaking to the entirety of America, I think a lot of older voices would

want to overpower us,” said senior and #Enough rally organizer Edden Rosenberg. “[Some adults] don’t think we know what we are talking about so they all want to speak for us.”

The discussions in media and in politics are particularly abrasive, subsequent of the confines of a bipartisan discussion.

“People have learned [from the discussions in media and politics] that the best way to be heard is to yell the loudest but that’s not the best way to effect change,” said gun reform advocate, speaker at the #Enough Rally, and CNN correspondent Mark McKinnon.

“That just creates more chaos.”

Some students believe that this change in behavior is a request to put emotions aside, even though that is not the example presented by some adults.

“We as teenagers are, in a way, being forced to take the pathos out of our discussion and shift to logos,” said Freeman. “In order for

people to take us seriously we need to put our emotions aside and focus on facts. But emotions are scarier than facts.”

This change in behavior from students, although may be considered essential for the movement, is not necessarily fair.

“It’s not necessarily fair but it’s also not necessarily unfair,” said Rawal. “Yes, we shouldn’t have to be tasked with fighting for our safety in a place that is meant to be safe. But, historically, change has come from young people, and that’s how it’s going to come around now.”

However, students respect that to foster change in policy they must approach this movement from a mature and educated front.

“We must learn to rise above a good amount of the negativity, because it’s rarely constructive or well-thought out,” said Rosenberg. “But it’s important to stay level-headed and open-minded, [...] because our goal is to make change.”
