CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS! Welcome to the 19th Annual
Readers’ Choice Awards, it’s one of our highlights each and every year at The Record. As you may recall, we published ballots during the month of May and offered a $750 shopping spree at Royal City Centre as an incentive for you, the loyal reader, to cast your votes for the best in New West in 120 business categories. While our contest does not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation definitely lends credibility to the outcome as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify every ballot. Each ballot must contain a minimum of 25 businesses voted upon, only one ballot is accepted per individual, and only original ballots cut out of the newspaper or entered online were counted. All other entries were disqualified. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the businesses who received this year’s Readers’ Choice Award. They are all deserving of our recognition as The Best in New West. But please don’t just take our word for it; visit as many of the winning businesses listed in this special feature and decide for yourself. The Record would like to congratulate this year’s winner of the Royal City Centre Shopping Spree, Matt Green, We also sincerely thank all of your who participated and entered this year’s contest and we look forward to counting your votes next year.

QUEEN’S PARK DENTAL Best Dental Clinic
The award-winning Queen’s Park Dental has earned a reputation for its unwavering dedication to its patients. This simple, yet leading concept, has been one of the guiding principles here for nine years. Founded by Dr. Darcy Murphy, he and his team offer a comprehensive range of dental services in an environment that is relaxed and inviting. “I have a laid-back management style and try to keep a happy and comfortable atmosphere here for my team and our patients,” he notes. “I feel that if my team is happy we can all provide the best care to our patients.” His clinic specializes in a wide range of services and the most up-to-date advancements in general dentistry, including dental implants, dental veneers, sealants, as well as teeth whitening and more. In keeping with its ethos of providing cutting edge technology, a few years ago Dr. Murphy introduced a New Gum procedure, Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). This scalpel-free, suture-free procedure is used to correct gum recession. “It is an excellent alternative to traditional grafting techniques, and much more comfortable for the patient,” he explains. Dr. Murphy comes with exceptional credentials. The highly skilled professional graduated in 2003 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the well-respected Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. While at Dalhousie, he was elected Class President, President of the Dental Society and Class Valedictorian. In addition, Dr. Murphy was accepted into a one-year Dentistry General Practice Residency (GPR) at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. After that, he went on to practice in New Westminster for a few years prior to purchasing Queens Park Dental from Dr. Lyle Agar. “I see myself as a lifelong learner and endeavour to provide top notch care by participating in continuing education to learn the latest techniques,” he adds. Besides its state-of-the-art dentistry, Queen’s Park Dental is a practice with “Heart.” Dr. Murphy regularly donates to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation and has established a yearly scholarship to a graduating student at New Westminster Secondary. It doesn’t stop there. Dr. Murphy personally takes time out of his busy practice to volunteer at the British Columbia Coroners Service (BCCS) as a Forensic Odontologist. “My team also donates a day to ring the bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas,” he says. Your smile is the first thing people notice – let Queen’s Park Dental. make it the best ever!

Everyone has a vision of how they want their life to be – but do you ever visualize good health for yourself and your family? In New Westminster, award-winning Royal City Health & Manual Therapy Inc. is your one-stop wellness centre for skilled massage therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, and clinical counselling. Founded in 1995 by Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) and partners in life and business, Jeanie Bezdan and Rick Tkach. Their wellness centre offers exceptional service along with personalized care, a holistic healing environment, and the latest techniques and treatments in the field of alternative medicine. It’s no surprise the clinic has garnered several accolades, including Best Business of 2017, Three Best Rated Physios and New West Record’s A List for Favorite Physio. Both credit their success to their great front-end staff and practitioners, a team of talented, professional and friendly people who have helped to create a positive, welcoming environment for their clientele. “Our location, our atmosphere, and service have also helped make us successful,” says Jeanie, adding they have patients whose whole families attend. “It really is about giving clients the start they need to get on the road to physical health, so they can return to the life they enjoy.” Royal City Health & Manual Therapy Inc. also provides its clients with state-of-the-art technology, including its new Shockwave machine, which helps resolve chronic conditions. Also new is the Student Intern Clinic on Saturdays, offering professional treatments for $30.00, as well as a massage therapy graduate intern. “Our massage therapy interns offer treatments for a reduced fee,” explains Jeanie. “These new services help make treatments more affordable for those without extended medical insurance.” Both Jeanie and Rick come with a wealth of experience and education. Jeanie received her degree in communications from Simon Fraser University (SFU) with a minor in kinesiology. She then went on to graduate from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1995. Rick completed three years in Kinesiology at SFU before graduating from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1988. “Together, we have over 50 years of combined experience,” says Jeanie. “We have a lot of experience running a clinic, but we still have a lot to learn. We remain open minded, approachable, interested in and encourage ideas from staff.” Philanthropy is also important to the couple. The team regularly raises funds for local non-profits, such as the Food Bank, Children’s Hospital, Variety Club, and Empty Stocking Fund.

HYACK EXCEL TIRE
Thank you New Westminster residents for this honour! Along with my wife Alix and our three daughters, I am proud to call New Westminster home— and since I began serving on City Council in 2005 I’ve been grateful to be part of making our city a great place to live, work and play. My three terms on Council and the past four years serving as Mayor have been a time of tremendous change and opportunity here. Thanks again to your support, here’s some of what we’ve been able to accomplish in the past decade: • Moody Park Outdoor Pool & Youth Centre • Westminster Pier Park • Front Street Mews & Ewen Avenue Streetscape Program • Redevelopment of Sapperton & Quayside Park Livability also means being able to afford where you live. To that end we can all be proud of New Westminster’s efforts: we’ve permitted laneway housing, created a new rental housing program that so far has seen 1,000 new rental units, we’ve protected existing rental buildings, and started the Rent Bank. We’ve also launched small-lot affordable housing projects in downtown New Westminster and Queensborough. The mayoral election is coming up in October, so please get out and vote! I’m excited to continue working with all of New Westminster’s citizens to keep up the momentum we’ve built together. And if you ever have questions for me, feel free to send me an email at: firstname.lastname@example.org
In order to keep your car running at its best, it’s important to keep up with routine maintenance and inspections. By properly maintaining your vehicle, you’ll reduce future repair costs, optimize your car’s performance, maintain its value and extend its life. In New Westminster, residents have trusted in Hyack Excel Tire to do just that since 1991. At the helm of this award-winning automotive shop is owner/general manager David Klassen, who received his industry education at BCIT and comes with more than 25 years of experience. Prior to purchasing the popular auto shop in September 2012, David worked as its head technician for 14 years. He is extremely proud of his team of highly skilled trained professionals, who on a daily basis, provide the best in automotive repairs and tires. Therefor it doesn’t come as a surprise that Hyack Excel Tire consistently wins the Reader’s Choice award every year, as well as the A-List Award for Top Mechanic and Three Time Air Care Quality Repair Award. “Our business is about building a trusting relationship with our customers,” says David, adding they have added initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint. He also credits his staff for Hyack Tire’s continued success. “I have a knowledgeable, hard-working and caring team who are committed to quality workmanship and service,” he adds. Keeping you safe on the road is critical to everyone at Hyack Tire. They make sure to provide every customer with the best for all of their auto repair needs, including auto part replacements and tires. The auto shop utilizes state-of-the-art computerized equipment to ensure maximum life for your vehicle. From tire replacements and oil changes to brakes and catalytic converters, its experienced mechanics offer reliable service and support.

Best Family Dining White Spot New Westminster has become synonymous with great service, great food and great people. Once again, local residents have proclaimed White Spot as Best Family Dining in the 2018 Reader’s Choice Awards. “We feel a great sense of pride for winning the Reader’s Choice Award” says Mathew Oommen, General Manager. Oommen says the legendary restaurant has an unbeatable combination of affordability, proximity and a menu offering something for everyone. “Another key to our success is that we promise to do whatever it takes to keep our customers happy”, says Oommen. White Spot is truly considered part of our province’s heritage and pride. According to White Spot’s story, it all started when founder Nat Bailey transformed his 1918 Model T truck into a traveling lunch counter for hungry sightseers at Vancouver’s Lookout Point. One day, as the young industrious Bailey was doing his runs, a customer leaned out of his window and asked him, “Why don’t you bring it to us?” So, Bailey hired three strapping young guys to take orders. And thus began one of the most enduring stories of phenomenal success in the industry. Nat’s energy and his passion for service set the stage for the first White Spot drive-in, which he opened in 1928 on Granville Street at 67th avenue in Vancouver. That commitment to excellence is echoed at New Westminster White Spot, and is evident in the number of awards the location has gathered over the years. This summer, enjoy your favourite White Spot fare while taking in some sun on their great outdoor patio. For breakfast, lunch or dinner, White Spot is the place to be for great eats in a fun, casual atmosphere. White Spot New Westminster is located at #134 610 6th street in Royal City Centre with plenty of free parking. For more information, visit www.whitespot.ca or call 604-522-4800. FRASERSIDE COMMUNITY SERVICES THORNBRIDGE GARDENS Best Community Service Organization
Best Retirement Residence
Fraserside’s 45 years of community service began when a small group of people living in New Westminster saw and responded to a need in their community. This group found ways to help people help themselves, and our current team continues this approach to support over 1,800 people every year in six communities across Metro Vancouver. One major way we help people help themselves is by providing housing and residential support. In 1990, when the Woodlands institution continued to downsize, and its former residents with developmental disabilities needed homes, we responded by opening residential group homes in the Tri-Cities area. In 1992, when an apartment building fire in New Westminster left its inhabitants homeless, we contracted with the Ministry of Social Services to create an emergency family shelter. In 2000, when many adults living with mental health issues in New Westminster were having difficulties finding and sustaining suitable living arrangements, we contracted with Fraser Health to provide a transitional housing program. The success of that program led to additional contracts to purchase more homes and open more supported housing programs in Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. And in 2007, when individuals living with both mental health and substance use issues in Surrey were struggling for housing, we opened a supportive housing program. The site of this program has since expanded to provide low barrier housing for adults who are at risk of homelessness. Today we provide housing at 11 of our 14 facilities. But more is needed, especially in light of the regional housing shortage. Fraserside is actively assessing opportunities to expand our housing portfolio, seeking funding opportunities and recruiting personnel to meet this need. We invite you to join us! Consider donating to our registered charity or joining our team as an employee, practicum student or knowledge philanthropist. Read more about our plans at http://www.fraserside.bc.ca/about-us/publications/

For more than four decades, New Westminster’s small, medium to large-sized businesses have relied on the expertise of Brookes & Co., CPA. Founded in 1976 by Raymond (Ray) Brookes, the firm specializes in providing a broad range of professional accounting services – financial statements, tax, payroll, and bookkeeping services. Ray received his Bachelor of Commerce from UBC in 1968, then went on to graduate from the Certified General Accountants Association program, acquiring his CGA designation in 1974. From 1968 to 1976, Ray honed his skills working as an accountant in the manufacturing (of locksets), the wholesaling (of specialty building products), and the management and real estate development industries. Today, the award-winning firm has built a stellar reputation for its genuine desire to help, along with excellence in customer satisfaction and its small-town welcoming atmosphere. Brookes & Co. is committed to finding customized financial solutions for each and every one of its clients. “We have quite a casual and relaxed atmosphere in the office and I believe our clients pick up on this,” he says. “Being open (unofficially) on Saturdays and throughout the year has also attracted those clients who cannot take the time off from work during the weekdays.” Ray or his daughter, Liana, takes the time to explain in detail each client’s annual financial statements – thus enabling them to make better strategic decisions in a timely and informed manner. “We are about satisfying our clients ... relieving them of the stress of dealing with the mountain of paperwork (which they create) and with the various regulatory bodies and taxing authorities, such as the CRA,” explains the seasoned professional. “Our six-member team seems to have developed a successful synergy of people skills together with technical knowledge.”

Lifetime Eyecare has won both of these distinctions almost every year since 2008! How in the world do they do it? For starters, Dawn Drever, the manager of over 12 years, helps navigate the waters on behalf of a wonderful team of experienced and friendly Opticians, Optometrists, Eye Specialists and customer care staff. You can really tell that these people enjoy helping people! “Whenever someone comes into Lifetime Eyecare, we really try to give them the best experience every single time.” Dawn says proudly. “That is why we often have more staff on the floor than we need, to make sure that every eye care patient and customer gets the very best service.” Then of course there is the amazing designer eyeglass frame selection. Lifetime Eyecare restocks almost monthly to ensure that they have the newest, coolest frames alongside with the most popular timeless styles. So, there is no question that they are best in eyeglasses. They have won that distinction every single year since 2008! But no eye care centre can be complete without a distinguished team of very experienced and talented eye doctors. Dr. Bachra, Dr. Zhou and Dr. Diep (Eye Specialist) work together seamlessly to give you the best care, the best service and of course effective and intelligent advice on how best to address your vision health concerns. On top of all of that, Lifetime Eyecare has an A+ Rating with BBB.org, the only eye care centre in New Westminster to carry that distinction. Call them today at (604) 522 – 1120 or visit them at 614 6th Street at the corner of 6th Street and Princess Avenue.

1. Music Lessons Are Number One. Do you want to learn music at a place where the music education is the most important thing? At Music Box Music Academy your music lessons are our business. Giving you a great learning experience is our # 1 priority. We are not a piano store or dance studio that also has music lessons, or an instrument retailer that has lessons in tiny little rooms with little or no accountability from the instructors. At Music Box our mission is providing you with a great music learning experience. 2. Free, all inclusive recitals & masterclasses! We are the only music school in New Westminster that offers not only free recitals, but also free masterclasses. Every parent just wants to know how their child is doing and if they are really progressing. The best way for a parent to understand if their investment in lessons is really worth it, is to have their child participate in a recital, many of our students choose to perform in our optional biannual recitals. This can only be found at Music Box.

ANGELINA’S DUTCH CORNER RESTAURANT
Best Breakfast & Best Brunch & Best Sunday Brunch
Based in the Quay by the Fraser River, Angelina’s Dutch Corner is a solid favourite with locals and visitors who frequent here for breakfast, brunch, coffee, or lunch. And no wonder, with the natural scenery and stunning views just outside their doorstep, many people can be frequently found queuing up for a place to eat. This family-friendly restaurant features contemporary and traditional Dutch cuisine along with West Coast favourites. This popular local neighbourhood hangout serves fresh food at great prices in a casual atmosphere that keeps customers coming back again and again as shown on many positive online reviews. “At Angelina’s, we really appreciate our customers . . . we truly believe the customer is boss, and should be treated like royalty.” says Eric Missouri, who wears many hats– owner, chef and manager. Since Eric took over the trendy restaurant five and a half years ago, this busy entrepreneur has not only increased sales by a whopping 300% and still climbing. He has turned the restaurant into one of the most popular spots in New West. Everything is made from scratch, with Eric sourcing the freshest local ingredients. Renowned in the Royal City for its signature Dutch pannekoek, waffles and pancakes, Angelina’s also makes a mean bennie and sandwiches for the lunch crowd. Now, a pannekoek is larger and thinner than a pancake, but not as thin as a crepe. They can have slices of back bacon, apples, cheese or raisins. Plain ones can also be eaten with treacle (a syrup made of sugar beets), appelstroop (an unspiced Dutch variety of apple butter) or just plain powdered sugar. Angelina’s Dutch Corner also feature a wide selection of omelettes, breakfast plates, sandwiches and soups. Lunch items are also available for take out or catering. The full menu can be downloaded and viewed on angelinasdutchcorner.ca. Bon appetit!

The unsung hero of our Canada Day Fireworks
READERS CHOICE AWARD FOR
BEST ANNUAL FESTIVAL Thank you for voting us Best Festival
Year after year, New Westminster residents and tourists alike, eyes upward and faces aglow, marvel at the stunning display of fireworks, lifting the spirits of our community in this timehonoured Canada Day tradition. The spectacular display overhead is reflected on the surface of the Fraser River. On the river, one man, alone in the elements, works his vessel with the current. Each year, solely to serve his community without seeking anything in return, he takes it upon himself to fuel his tugboat and barge, and pilot his vessels to be positioned in front of the New Westminster Quay. This man, understated and humble, is Kim Alipradini. He is as elusive as he is reliable, and he is the unsung hero of the Fireworks. As the owner of Valley Towing, the selfless service he provides makes it possible for our diverse community to enjoy this annual event. We would like to acknowledge and thank Kim publicly on behalf of the New Westminster Hyack Festival Association. His service and commitment to our not-for-profit and also to our community make him invaluable, and a much-appreciated neighbour and friend. We are lucky to know him and to have him in our community. What happens when you combine leading music teachers, top music programs and young and old aspiring musicians in a music studio in New Westminster? Magic! That is what Music Box – New Westminster’s Music Academy has been doing since 2013. The popular school has attracted local students as well as those who choose to travel in from Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver and Richmond because of the professionalism of its instruction and highly dedicated teachers. With a proven track record showcased by quality music, voice, theory, violin, flute, drums, ukulele, singing, guitar, clarinet and piano lessons, its no wonder Music Box is a Reader’s Choice award winner, four years in a row. “We have great music teachers, all with University training and professional performance experience,” says Vashti Fairbairn, Owner, Director, Teacher. “Our music teachers are dedicated to learning about your personal musical goals and helping you to achieve them.” As a boutique Music School, they offer personalized lessons and classes in Music to aspiring students as young as newborns to seniors. “We are happy to say we have office staff solely dedicated to scheduling music lessons… This is very unusual for a music school,” adds Vashti. “This means parents are taken care of promptly and with flexibility.” Vashti comes to the industry with a wealth of experience, most notably as a decade-long music teacher and performer. In addition, she has performed at international jazz festivals across the USA, from Florida to California and in-between. She completed her studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and received an ARCT from the Royal Conservatory. She has also received numerous musical awards and nominations. Music Box is a music school that cares deeply about their students and the community. Music Box regularly donates to charities Music Heals and Burnaby Safe House and loves to pop up at community events like the Farmers Market and send students to sing O’Canada at Salmon Bellies Games in-between music lessons.

Independent pharmacies offer a wide range of services that many of the larger, chain pharmacies and big box retailers do, but they also offer something else - down home friendliness and exceptional personal customer care. Those are just a couple of reasons why Imperial Pharmacy is a multiple award-winning pharmacy. Just as important to Imperial Pharmacy’s success is that everyone takes the time to get to know its customers – they get to know what they need and understand their health challenges and conditions. And that builds trust. Since 2003, residents have trusted the professional team here. Imperial Pharmacy offers a wide variety of prescription and non-prescription items including herbal products, vitamins, nutritional supplements, pharmaceutical compounding, home health care products, pressure stockings, medical supplies, blister packs and compliance packaging. The independent pharmacy also provides flu vaccinations, Diabetes counselling, glucose monitor training, medication reviews and free blood pressure monitoring. “We care about people’s health and we care about their kids’ health...we are proud not to sell tobacco,” says owner and pharmacist with more than 25 years of experience, RidaBazzi. Rida comes with a wealth of education and experience. He obtained his bachelor’s Degree in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences in 1992. Since then, he has worked in the industry as a pharmacist, and pharmacy manager as well as he is involved in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Distribution and Export.. He also taught part time in the faculty of pharmacy and is a member of several prestigious Canadian and International Associations. Residents know that at Imperial Pharmacy, everyone is committed to developing long term relationships with each customer, ensuring everyone receives the best possible care. Health care at its best is right here in your neighbourhood at Imperial Pharmacy.
When someone is injured in a car crash, has a problem with a renovation, or been left out of a Will, New Westminster residents can rely on Kinman & Associates to help them navigate these complex legal issues. Founded in 2007 by Ian Kinman, Barrister & Solicitor, the firm’s commitment to its clients has earned them a Reader’s Choice award. As an experienced litigator with more than three decades specializing in personal injury, construction litigation and corporate/commercial work for small businesses, Ian has earned a reputation as a well-respected local lawyer. Although the subject of death and wills can seem morbid, intimidating, and sometimes confusing, the expert lawyers at Kinman & Associates will make it much easier. “With an aging population, we are seeing a lot more cases dealing with estates and their aftermath,” Ian says. “We are witnesses to an unmet need for proper estate planning. Even homeowners who lived modest lives can leave behind multi-million dollar estates. Many of the cases we see could have been avoided if the deceased had properly planned their estates in advance of their passing. Every person should have a Will. We recently held a 10 percent off promotion for new Wills at our Hyack Festival booth.” The well-established, multi-disciplinary firm succeeds because, Ian says, everyone at the firm truly listens to the needs of its clients. Having a mix of senior and junior lawyers helps Kinman & Associates deliver cost-effective legal services in accordance with each client’s budget. “Many services are available at fixed cost, avoiding the uncertainty of ‘billable hours’ and allowing clients to create a realistic budget for their legal issue,” he adds. “Appointments are available outside of usual business hours. If there’s an emergency and I need a plumber, I can find one. Why should finding a lawyer be any different?”
One of the longest running premiere non-profit arts and cultural festivals in British Columbia has garnered another Readers’ Choice award. The 47th Annual Hyack Festival has become an iconic local celebration, featuring multicultural activities for all ages, free live performances by well-known Vancouver-based Indie artists, great food, as well as the beloved Hyack International Parade. Brunella Battista, Executive Director with the multiple awardwinning Hyack Festival Association, credits the amazing pool of volunteers - from directors to event volunteers - who year after year, come and support this popular family event. She believes the success can also be traced to festival attendees’ interest on enduring themes such as being the Royal City, a place of significant history, and proud tradition of preserving heritage. “In 2017, the brand new Hyack Float, its Theme and Team were awarded the International Award at the Daffodil Festival in Tacoma, Washington,” Brunella adds. In addition, Hyack represents New Westminster in different communities throughout the province and the Pacific Northwest during parades and other events. Another reason for its phenomenal appeal is that the association strives to keep the festival fresh. Brunella went on to say Hyack is truly invested in the community, so to that end they are inviting new partnerships with local stakeholders. “We are also striving to become more accessible online and ensuring that residents know that the Hyack Festival Association is inclusive and embracing of our diverse population,” Brunella explains. “Look out for updates on our new activities and events at hyackfestival.com or on Facebook.”

PATTI GOSS Best Realtor
There are no short cuts to success in the real estate business, and few realtors know this better than Patti Goss, who has close to 30 years of experience in this highly competitive industry and tight market. She has developed a level of expertise and leadingedge approach to buying and selling homes that has won her a legion of clients who have voted her best realtor in New West. The fact that more than 70 per cent of her business is referrals from past clients is significant and speaks to the trust and excellence in service she provides. “My business is all about people and helping them through the buying and selling process,” says Patti. “Because we are a team of three, (her son Wes Goss joined her team in 2011), we can provide exceptional service and coverage seven days a week.” The other member of her team includes Annabelle Steffler, who helps with the all-important social media communications and administrative duties. “Being a team allows us to provide better coverage and to pay close attention to the details, such as offering detailed buyer and seller guides, attending all showings and preparing the home to be shown at its best,” she says. “We do not use lockboxes or ask the realtors to pick the key up at our office.” With a focus on minutiae as well as the big picture, Patti has earned the respect of those in the industry, having been honoured numerous times by a panel of her peers with awards from RE/MAX of Western Canada and RE/MAX International, as well as Outstanding Performances awards for several years. In addition to having lived in New West for over 40 years, Patti has also committed hundreds of hours of volunteer work, sponsored worthy community causes and contributed to charitable organizations in the municipality and beyond. Summer’s in full swing. It’s hot, it’s sweaty. But there’s one saving grace, and that’s a trip to the local ice cream shop. In New Westminster, when people want to indulge in sweet, velvety ice cream, they head to New Westminster Dairy Queen. For nearly three decades, the multiple award-winning Dairy Queen has been an integral part of the community under leadership of the Sam family. “We make everything in our store fresh to order, which is a big part of our Fan Food motive,” says Amanda, Store Manager. “We like to ensure that our fans are getting the best service.” Amanda credits DQ’s continued success on friendly, helpful staff, a great tasting product and that good old-fashioned service, where clients are greeted by name. “We’ve been a part of the New Westminster community for many years now and have many fans that have been coming since they, themselves, were children,” adds Amanda. “Our focus has always been the customers and ensuring a positive atmosphere making us a place our customers enjoy visiting.” But don’t be mistaken. Dairy Queen is more than just an ice cream parlour. DQ offers a wide variety of hamburgers, chicken wraps, salads and much more. Meanwhile, community is ingrained in the philosophy of Dairy Queen. Each year, DQ is involved in local charities, sports teams as well as the Children’s Miracle Network’s, raising thousands for Children’s Hospital through its Miracle Treat Day selling Blizzard, raffle baskets, 50/50 draws, face painting, and games. “We take pride in giving back to the community through donations to New Westminster Police and Fire Department, New Westminster Little League, local churches and elementary and secondary schools, just to name a few,” adds Amanda.
A superb piece of hand-crafted jewellery is very special. The care, thought, exclusive materials and sheer craftsmanship that goes into custom jewelry makes the final creation incredibly personal and beautiful. This is exactly what Cartwright Jewelers Ltd has offered, and more, since 1933. A Readers Choice award winner for 19 years running, owner Susan Cartwright-Coates says its success also lies in the fact that “In this day and age where everything is going bigger and less personal, we excel in servicing the customer and making them feel like a somebody. Everybody who walks through the door is treated like a personal friend.” In fact, this landmark jeweler is synonymous with exceptional customer service. Since its founder James Daniel Cartwright began as a watchmaker and jeweller in downtown New Westminster, they have been dedicated to creating the finest shopping experience. “Excellent customer service and experience has been and will always be the cornerstone of our family business, combined with consistent top-quality craftsmanship and design,” adds Susan. As a full-service jewellery store, this third-generation familyowned business does everything from jewellery repair to the most stunning custom design work. Its design team creates timeless pieces of jewellery you will be proud to pass on for generations to come. Meanwhile, Susan is extremely grateful to the community, which has supported Cartwright Jewelers over the last 85 years. She regularly donates to more than 40 different local non-profit organizations a year, including several local festivals. “Our yearly fundraiser supports the CKNW Kids Fund (formerly The CKNW Orphans Fund),” she adds. “We have raised over $150,000.00 in the past 18 years.”

For more than four decades, the Rivers Reach Pub has been New Westminster’s flagship pub - a destination for locals and visitors alike. Part of its phenomenal success lies with its owner/ proprietor, George, who comes with a long history in the hospitality industry. You could say that running an award-winning pub - one that consistently wins Chamber of Commerce and Reader’s Choice nods, as well provincial awards, service and business awards - is in the blood. That’s because George learned from the best; his father, Christos, is one of the founders of Boston Pizza. The pub boasts its very own award–winning liquor store with an in house wine store as well. River’s Reach Pub continues to bring in large numbers of locals and out-of-towners, who are attracted by the cozy atmosphere, delectable fare and an excellent range of imported and craft beers. This combination makes this pub one that has people talking - even celebrities. You might be lucky enough to catch sight of local sportsman or a famous face! “We offer consistency, impeccable service, great atmosphere, great quality food, great pricing,” says George, adding they offer weekly meal and drink specials in the pub and seniors discount on Tuesdays in the liquor store. It’s loyal clientele also love the pub’s prizes, promotions and giveaways consisting of trips to NHL destinations, BBQs, patio sets, televisions and more. George likes to stay ahead of the game, be it business or entertainment. Coming soon to the pub, you can request your favorite songs from your table through your smartphones! As a longtime resident of New Westminster, George is truly invested in the community. They regularly donate or sponsor local sports teams, schools, fire and police departments, food bank, the Michael Cuccione Foundation, Salvation Army and many other local charities. “A big thank you to the community for their continuing support and highly efficient staff that work tirelessly to make River’s Reach the best neighborhood pub in New Westminster,” adds George.
As soon as you walk through the doors of the multiple award-winning Royal Tandoori Indian Restaurant, you are in for a culinary journey through some of the best dishes that draws from its roots in East Africa and the Middle East. In the heart of New Westminster’s uptown district, Royal Tandoori has been in business nearly two decades and has consistently enjoyed a reputation for the best East Indian Food in the city. That’s because Royal Tandoori Indian Restaurant is well-known for its high quality of food and friendly service, thanks to owner/chef Jasminder Singh, and his wife Kulwinder Sandhi. An exceptional chef, Jasminder has been in the food industry for more than three decades, having run a successful restaurant in India for more than 20 years. Voted one of the finest in Indian cuisine by loyal fans across the Lower Mainland, start your adventure with some of Jasminder’s famous Nan bread. He prepares it fresh every day and offers a choice of regular Nan or Nan with garlic, onion, chicken, potatoes (Allu) or spinach. Spread some of his signature Dhai Bhalla, which is ground lentil balls in yogurt, or some delicious Raita, made of yogurt and cucumbers, on the bread for a tasty appetizer. If you prefer, go for some authentic samosas or vegetarian Pakauras to start your meal. One of Jasminder’s family recipes is the mouthwatering mango butter chicken, which is a culinary delight, prepared in clay over with herbs, tomatoes, cream and a delicious mango butter sauce. For those who are vegetarians, the Royal Tandoori offers several choices. Relish in the mouthwatering Jalfrezi Curry or try the Veggi Korma, a blend of mixed vegetables cooked in creamy sauce made daily in the restaurant’s kitchen. No matter what you order, Royal Tandoori will delight all of your senses.

NURSE NEXT DOOR
THE TANNING STUDIO
Many “Boomers” must make decisions about their aging parents’ housing options. As our lifespan increases, many seniors are able to remain independent but others will require assistance of some sort. For many seniors, staying in their own home is the best. At Nurse Next Door Home Care Services, Wendy J. Scott, co-owner and Director of Care, understands that all too well. A registered nurse for over 41 years, she co-founded the award-winning home care business out of a very personal reason – her beloved father. After her father was discharged from hospital, Wendy suddenly realized the benefits of care delivered within the home and a Nurse Next Door home care franchise was the best way to deliver on her passion. “Nurse Next Door senior home care is not just about finding someone who can come when you need them,” she explains. “We go to great lengths to make sure we have the perfect match and will make it right if we don’t get it the first time.” Nurse Next Door brings expertise and peace of mind to families and their loved ones through a wide range of senior home care, from housekeeping to palliative care. Wendy also provides learning opportunities for seniors on a variety of topics at the Seniors Active in Living Program, Bonsor 55+ Community Centre, Century House, and Cameron Community Centre. She teaches for the Canadian Diabetes Association and provides written information on this chronic health condition. Wendy participates as a nursing consultant for an addictions rehabilitation program and for a centre for marginalized women. Wendy runs a wellness program in independent living residences. She participates in 2-3 community events a month such as Senior Fairs, the Hyack Festival, and Sapperton Days. Wendy sets up and runs multiple flu vaccine clinics throughout the fall and winter.
Most of us want that coveted sun-kissed skin without exposure to harmful UV rays. For many in New Westminster, there is only one place to go - the multiple Readers Choice award-winning The Tanning Studio. Opened since 2009, the salon offers several options for customers’ unique wants and needs. “For those who are more focussed on holistic skin care and fitness, our Beauty Angel Red Light Therapy is perfect for them,” says Chantal Dawes Owner/Operator, who purchased the popular salon in February 2015. “For those looking for an even premium spray tanning experience without going in the sun, we have the Versa Spa with our very own TTS Glow clear and bronze solution. As well as our staff is trained for custom hand held air brush tanning.” There are several benefits to tanning salons, including improved appearance, enhanced mood, and increased vitamin D levels. The Tanning Studio showcases a variety of sun beds - everything from a level 1 to 5. Chantal explains that Level 1 provides more UVB to produce vitamin D, while Level 4 is a seven-minute stand-up for those on the go, and its Level 5 high pressure bed offers more UVA browning rays. The studio also prides itself on being a customer-service driven company, which offers state-of-the-art equipment in a facility that is clean and welcoming. The Tanning Studio experience begins the moment you walk in the door and are warmly greeted by one of its courteous and professional employees, all of whom are Smart Tan certified. New clients get a tour of the facility with each bed’s features explained. Meanwhile, Chantal comes to the industry armed with 17 years of experience, including 14 as an air brush artist. Smart Tan certified, she managed several salons before realizing her dream of owning her own. When you want that glow of health, discover The Tanning Studio.
