New West voters and candidates were really sinking their teeth into the election campaign during the final full weekend of campaigning.

Burger Heaven is carrying on its longstanding tradition of offering a (b)unofficial burger poll for the civic election. If the burger poll is any indication, it could be a tight race for the New Westminster mayor’s chair.

“Wayne Wright had taken a huge lead right from the beginning. Over the past three to four days, Cote is making a strong comeback,” Chris Geib, the restaurant’s general manager, told The Record late Friday afternoon. “As it stands right now, it is basically a tie between Cote and Wayne Wright.”

The tie had disappeared by Monday morning, when the Cote burger took the lead with 294 votes, with the Wright burger just nine votes behind at 285. Trailing behind were the Crosty burger at 73, and the Krasnogor burger at 45. Undecideds were at 96.

It would appear that some candidates needed a little sustenance on the campaign trail, as several candidates’ vehicles were seen outside the eatery on the weekend and others tweeted photos of themselves dining at the restaurant at 77 10th St. “We had a really phenomenal weekend,” Geib told The Record Monday.

Does district need seven school trustees?

In the Surrey school district there are upwards of 70,000 students and an annual budget of $600 million, and it has seven trustees on the school board.

New Westminster is under a tenth of the population and the budget, but has the same number of school trustees making decisions about management, money and education.

Is it necessary? Could New Westminster make do with five school trustees, who earn

an annual stipend of approximately $21,500 each? Dropping two, for example, would free up enough cash for at least an extra education assistant to work with students who have special needs.

Trustee candidate Mark Gifford said it’s a question he heard when out door knocking recently.

“The range of issues doesn’t change much on the scale,” Gifford said, referring to neighbouring Surrey.

“One concern with moving to five trustees is that there would be fewer new faces, unless we can increase voter turnout,” candidate Cort Ray Caldwell wrote in an email to The Record.

Mayoral candidate Vladimir Krasnogor hopes to topple three other candidates in his quest to become New Westminster’s next mayor.

Krasnogor garnerered 1,098 votes in the 2011 civic election, when he sought a seat on council. This time around, he’s set his sights on the mayor’s chair.

“I am a realist. When I started, I had two points. I wanted to be elected. My second goal was to make a difference in the debate and to make a statement,” he said. “I know I will definitely make a difference in the debate.”

Krasnogor, who has always been interested in civic affairs, immigrated to Canada from the former Soviet Union.

“I was looking for a free country, a country with democracy,” he said. “I value democracy. Immigrants, usually they have an appreciation of democracy more than Canadians who were born here. Canadians who were born here, they don’t have that comparison. I know when there’s no democracy.”

Krasnogor moved to Canada from the Ukraine when he was in his mid 20s, settling first in Winnipeg, then moving to Vancouver when the recession hit and he was laid off. Twenty years after moving to New Westminster, he’s decided to run for mayor.

“If you are on council, your voice only counts if you have another three councillors agreeing with you. You are not sure you have the power to deliver because you need that agreement from other councillors. The mayor has more power,” he said. “He has one vote, but he has the gavel. He decides what goes on the agenda. I didn’t think staff really put something on the agenda that the mayor doesn’t approve. That’s my opinion.”

If elected mayor, Krasnogor wants to find ways to reduce taxes, deal with a lack of transparency and accountability at city hall and improve what he believes are strained relations with neighbouring cities because of traffic disputes.

Krasnogor believes the city’s first step to addressing traffic congestion should be to stop approving projects that put more cars and trucks on the city’s road network.

“ridiculous pet projects” such as public art installations as part of Vancouver Biennale, including blue trees and artwork on the waterfront made of shipping containers.

Instead of building a pedestrian crossing from Queensborough to the Quay, Krasnogor would prefer that the city put those funds toward a new library or aquatic centre.

When the city accepted a destination casino in New Westminster several years ago, it negotiated casino revenues known as development assistance compensation that would go into specific projects in the downtown and Queensborough, which are the two neighbourhoods where the casino has been located.

City officials have stated that changes to the agreement are unlikely, as all parties would have to renegotiate the funds and agree to changes.

“I don’t really buy that. This is a trick they use to convince people,” Krasnogor said. “It is still people’s money.”

Krasnogor would also like to see the planned demolition of a portion of the Front Street parkade cancelled.

necessary at this time,” he said. “We cannot beautify that stretch of Front Street with the trains going by. “ Protecting Queen’s Park is a priority for Krasnogor, who objected to the proposal that would have seen a Whitecaps farm team use Queen’s Park Stadium for its home games.

He was concerned that the plan would have seen trees cut down and deviated from the Queen’s Park master plan that had included public input.

“One of my goals is I will develop stronger protection for Queen’s Park,” he said.

In recent years, Krasnogor has spoken as a delegation at council meetings about the proposal for

Queen’s Park and election reform.

He’d like to take action to improve communications between the city and the residents.

“The problem with open delegations is the council looks at you.

Maybe they will listen to you. They say thank you and nothing is done.

You don’t get a reply. You are basically allowed to come and talk, they say thank you,” he said. “There is no exchange of ideas at all.”

Krasnogor, an electrical engineer, hopes people will choose to vote for independent candidates on Nov. 15 and put him in the mayor’s chair.

“I believe that I will make a good mayor,” he said. “Now let’s see what people think.”

Police seek witnesses

New Westminster police are asking any witnesses who may have observed a dangerous driving incident in Queen’s Park on Halloween night to contact investigators.

Officers with the department’s operational support unit spotted a car at about 6:55 p.m. on Oct. 31 speeding down Queens Avenue near Fourth Street, according to a media release from New West police.

The officers pursued the vehicle as it sped northbound on Third Street, hitting a street sign at Third Street and Townsend Place.

Instead of stopping, the car proceeded to drive across the lawn of a home on Third Street, narrowly missing a police officer who was attempting to stop the driver, the release added.

“The vehicle continued driving erratically north on Third Street where another member attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued on until the driver abandoned the vehicle at Fourth Street and Regina Street,” the release stated.

Officers arrested the driver at the scene.

While charges are expected, none have been submitted to Crown counsel yet, and until that time, the identity of the suspect won’t be released.

As the investigation continues, police are asking for any witnesses to come forward, the release added.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 14, 2015.

City parents’ group backs five candidates

A local parents’ group has deemed five candidates to be the “parents’ choice” in the Nov. 15 election.

Parents for Public Education New Westminster (P4PE) has endorsed five candidates who are seeking seats on school board: Jonina Campbell, Mark Gifford, MaryAnn Mortensen, Jeremy Perry and Kelly Slade-Kerr.

According to a press release from P4PE, the endorsements were made at a Nov.

6 membership meeting and were based on responses to a detailed questionnaire sent to all candidates. The responses were evaluated against the priorities identified by parents at P4PE’s inaugural meeting in April.

“P4PE was formed by a group of parents concerned about issues such as the replacement of the high school and financial accountability,” said P4PE co-chair Sandra Coll. “We believe these candidates have the right skills and experience to restore parents’ confidence in the district.”

“New Westminster, because it’s such a small town, it’s difficult getting people without connections … so given that fact, there is a possibility for conflict,” Cook said.

“I have huge problem with undeclared conflict, and the reason you have seven trustees is so people can absent themselves.”

Still, in terms of cost savings, slicing the number of trustees could be looked at, Cook said.

Incumbent Jonina Campbell said she has considered the pros and cons of reducing the number of trustees.

“Obviously, the pro is a financial one,” she said. “In terms of how it’s challenging, we still have the same number of committee responsibilities and trustee responsibilities that have to be divvied up between the trustees we have.”

Losing two seats would mean less diversity and representation on the board, she said.

“It’s not something I wouldn’t consider, it’s just I think not as simple as a financial gain to the district,” Campbell said.

Fellow incumbent James Janzen said seven trustees is standard throughout the province, though if there were a groundswell of people wanting to change the number, the board could look into it.

Under the School Act, the Minister of Education has authority to vary the number of trustees in a school district. Boards wishing to vary the number of trustees in their district must follow the trustee variation guidelines, which are intended to assist the board in providing the minister with the information necessary to make a decision on the request. The procedures set out in the guidelines include consulting with the public on the proposed changes.

Incumbent Michael Ewen said he likes the number seven.

“It allows us to have a wide variety of people engaged in the process and have a wide variety of opinions,” he said.

Surrey, where he works as a teacher,

is too big, in terms of its overall size, he noted.

“I think we want to have reasonablesized school districts,” Ewen said. “New Westminster is medium-size school district in the province. It’s right on the average.”

The benefits of having a variety of people engaged in the process outweigh the “minor” savings of reducing trustees, he added.

Incumbent MaryAnn Mortensen questioned the number of trustees needed to reach quorum (a minimum number of people needed to conduct business). If quorum is three, she said, then “it’s three people making the decisions for the entire community.”

“But I’m not against trying to save money at the board level at all,” she added.

Candidate Jeremy Perry also worried that reducing the number of trustees would mean less diversity, expertise and fewer voices on the school board.

“I don’t think I would be stringently opposed to the idea but would have concerns about losing the diversity of thought off the board,” he said.

There should be a correlation between the size of a district and the number of trustees as well as the amount trustees are paid, candidate Kelly Slade-Kerr wrote in an email.

“While Surrey has the same number of trustees as New Westminster, Surrey trustees receive almost 50 per cent more pay than their New West counterparts,” she wrote, noting this is likely a reflection of the increased workload for those trustees.

If a reduction in the number of trustees means an increase in trustee pay, her preference is for a larger number of trustees and the increased likelihood of a board with a broad range of skills and perspectives, she wrote.

Meanwhile, candidate Jim Bell asked “Why not eliminate it completely?”

“If that district doesn’t start to get really innovative right away, it might as well join up with Burnaby,” he told The Record.

Newspapers and journalists are facing increasing questions about their credibility and bias. It seems to us that a newspaper endorsing a candidate only amplifies those concerns.

Yes, newspapers are not clinical, scientific devices. They are staffed by human beings who, by their very natures, have biases. We try not to have those biases impact our decisions. And we clearly label opinion pieces when we do enter the fray.

We also try to make sure that as many voices and viewpoints as possible appear in these pages, and on our website.

We get heck from all sides in elections – and that, we believe, is a good thing.

We’re not going to tell you who to vote for, but we will say that it is almost always better to trust one’s own thinking than follow someone else’s.

At least then you have only yourself to blame if you’ve picked the wrong candidate.

Here’s who I’m voting for IN MY OPINION

n my mind, there are very few decisions I can make that are more important, and that will have more impact on my day-to-day life, than the names I mark my “x” beside on Nov. 15.

The people who run our city and our schools have the power to do great good, or great harm, and it behooves us all to choose wisely.

For candidates who may be wondering, I came up with this guide to how to win my vote.

First, some background about who I am and where I’m coming from.

I’m 44 years old, married with a small daughter, and I’ve lived in New Westminster for 16 years.

I tend to lean left, with a sometimes contradictory libertarian streak that says government should just plain butt out of certain issues.

I believe in public support for the arts, both in schools and in the community, because the arts are fundamental to our experience as human beings and to our existence as a society.

I believe that my tax dollars should be spent on the essentials – not just infrastructure and utilities, but parks, playgrounds,

sports fields, theatres, art galleries, greenways, cycling paths, because all of those things are an integral part of the fabric of the community.

I believe in development.

Development that is properly planned and sustainably executed is crucial to our future as a city.

I believe in building a greener world. I believe municipalities have a key role to play in the future of the planet, from helping residents to reduce waste to providing options that encourage us to leave our cars at home.

I believe that civic governments and school boards are critical players in the area broadly known as “social services” – in combating hunger, poverty, domestic violence, addiction, homelessness, isolation and exclusion of all kinds.

But you know what? I don’t want a council that thinks exactly like me. Tempting as it is to consider what a utopia we could create if only everyone were just like me, the reality is that I want a council and a school board that represent a variety of lifestyles and philosophies.

I want a bleeding heart, someone who operates from a place of compassion and empathy for the downtrodden, who exists to create a better and more equal world for all.

I want a dreamer, a visionary who’s willing to say, “Hey, here’s a crazy idea, let’s __________” – and then fills in the blank with

I want to thank you for your detailed coverage of those running in our local election. With 38 candidates, one cannot get out to see every one of them.

It helped to know if they had a vested interest in New Westminster, where they live, and if they are running in another district. In this day and age it is important to know if they are computer literate.

I hope you were very careful with what you wrote about each person. For example, if it appears that a candidate is running because of a personal agenda, I might not vote for them. I might choose someone who is looking at a larger picture of the future of our city. If they seem to be relying on past accomplishments, I might choose someone who is looking forward. to be eight storeys, 12 storeys, 16 storeys and 28 storeys. These buildings were to be architecturally significant. A nice glossy brochure was distributed by Wesbrook, and everyone was more or less satisfied.

Although not really happy with the tallest buildings, as a compromise, the MSRA endorsed the concept and wrote a letter to council at that time.

At the latest MSRA meeting, Wesbrook indicated that the buildings will be 18 storeys, 18 storeys, 18 storeys and 30 storeys.

We were shocked, to say the least. This is, I believe, the zoning that the current council put in place after receiving the letter from the MSRA. From the renderings, the buildings are pretty nondescript, and indeed are a “Great Wall.”

How is it that this occurred? Seems to me that, either it was a bait and switch on Wesbrook’s part, or council had plans of its own. Maybe both? I don’t know, but the upshot is that, once again we are being run over roughshod.

The jewel of the community that is Sapperton is being sacrificed on the altar of density. It seems that the current council won’t be happy until we all live in condos and Sapperton is a Metrotown clone.

The current council seems to be either bending over backward to accommodate developers, or blindly ideologically driven,

to make decisions directly opposite to the wishes and well being of residents. It is time for change. The current councillors have a culture of entitlement and arrogance.

Consider that when you mark your ballot.

Keep WOW monstrosity out Dear Editor:

As a resident of the Albert Crescent area and frequent visitor to Pier Park with my wife and two grandchildren, I object to the ridiculous WOW proposal. It seems highly ironic to glorify the container, a device which is largely responsible for the massive increase in global shipping which directly affects New Westminster in the form of truck traffic with its noise and pollution, particularly on Front Street and Royal Avenue.

Furthermore, the design of this so-called art reminds me of nothing more than the effect of a good storm at sea when containers frequently fall off ships and float around waiting to sink smaller craft. I wonder what the message of this installation will be. To me it says “WOW, what an ugly eyesore on our beautiful Fraser River.”

Please let’s not be hoodwinked into accepting this monstrosity but instead use this considerable amount of money for something attractive and meaningful for the community.

a plan so insanely ambitious that a lesser mortal would never have dared to give it voice.

I want someone hardheaded and practical – the voice of reason who can look across the table at the bleeding heart and the dreamer and say, “That’s great, guys, but let’s get real here. How are we going to make this work for the taxpayers?”

I want someone who represents those who are under-represented – whose background and life experience give them a genuine understanding of what it’s like to not be part of the white, straight, middle-aged, middle-class male experience.

I want a troublemaker.

The one who’s willing to stir the pot, to poke the hornet’s nest, to play devil’s advocate and prevent their counterparts from becoming settled and complacent.

I want a peacemaker.

The one who listens without judgement, who hears from all sides before making a decision, who finds the middle ground when the debate is becoming polarized, who understands the value of cooperation and compromise.

You may be one of those things. You may be a few of those things. You may even be none of those things, and I might still vote for you.

Because the real musthaves are just these: I want a candidate with integrity. I want one who tells the truth, for better or for worse. I’d rather you disappoint me honestly than mislead me with what you think I want to hear.

I want one who accepts their own fallibility. You are human. You will make mistakes. Just know how to apologize, to clean up the mess you made when you can, and learn from

that mistake so you can go on to make a new one the next time.

And, above all, I want someone who cares.

Whether you’re relatively new to New Westminster or whether your family roots go back generations, I want to know that this community matters to you. That you’re involved in it, that you’re working to make it better, that you want to do your best for it and for all its residents – whether they voted for you or not.

So now you know how to get my vote. That’s one down. Just think how many thousands more you have to get.

Good luck out there – and may the best candidates win.

Parents: Five candidates get nod ◗ continued from page 5

Thor Borgford, co-chair of P4PE, said the five candidates endorsed by P4PE expressed support for the values of the parent group, such as transparency in decision-making and sound financial governance.

“These candidates bring a range of experience and new ideas,” Borgford said.

“We need both to get this district back on track.”

Twelve of the 13 candidates running for school trustee submitted responses to the P4PE questionnaire.

All of the responses can be found on the group’s website at www.p4pe.ca.

P4PE formed in response to concerns about the school district’s fiscal management and invited community members to attend its inaugural meeting in April.

Borgford said various parents were having discussions about the district’s deficit and the high school project. Those parents came together as a result of the “angst” parents were feeling about the school district.

“We decided we needed to mobilize outside the PAC system because that’s not a political animal – it cannot be a political animal. It was just to find a place to give parents some voice in this whole process of selecting school trustees,” he said.

“The feeling at the time was that school board was not functioning well and the trustees were not working well together to solve our problems.”

Borgford said P4PE has endorsed some incumbents, which reflects some improvement in how the board has functioned over the course of the past six months.

“A lot of the angst has dissipated in the past while but we still do want to have some voice with the school board and we want to hold them accountable, not just at election time, but beyond election time,” he said.

“Our major job, I think has been done. We wanted to identify candidates that we feel could make some informed decision with respect to their candidacy for school board. I think we have done our major job in that sense. Are we disbanding and packing up our tents for the next election?

No. … I do think we have staying power.”

Borgford said he was pleased to see that 12 of 13 school trustee candidates

completed the questionnaires, which is, in a way, an endorsement of P4PE. “You’ll note that we endorsed five candidates, not seven,” he said. “At the beginning of our meeting we said ‘we need to have some type of threshold for endorsement, we want our endorsement to mean something.’”

At its selection meeting, the parents reviewed the questionnaires, had a fulsome discussion about the candidates and unanimously agreed to select candidates by a show of hands rather than a balloting process.

Turnout ‘steady’ at advance polls CAMPAIGN TRAIL

dvance polls have attracted quite a crowd in the days leading up to the Nov. 15 election.

The City of New Westminster’s election staff wouldn’t comment on reports that more people had voted in advanced polls by Nov. 8 than all of the advanced polls in 2011.

“All I can say is the turnout was good and it was steady throughout the day at all three of the advanced polls,” said Isabell Hadford, chief election officer. “We encourage people to come out and vote at the rest of the two advanced polls on Wednesday and the regular polls on Saturday.”

In addition to advance polls on Wednesday, Nov.

5 and Saturday, Nov. 8, residents are also able to vote in an advanced voting opportunity on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at the New Westminster Lawn Bowling clubhouse (710 Eighth St.) and city council chamber in city hall (511 Royal Ave.).

In the lead-up to the Nov. 15 civic election, special voting opportunities were also being offered at Dunwood Place, Thornebridge Gardens, Royal Columbian Hospital and Queen’s Park Care Centre.

“I am proud of the hard-working campaign we have run,” he said in a press release. “I have taken the time to talk directly with residents about my vision for the future and listen to the concerns and aspirations of our community.”

According to Cote, he got a chance to hear about the issues and concerns of New Westminster residents, but he also got in shape, lost several pounds and travelled enough ground to have walked to Portland and back.

New Westminster man charged in fatal crash

A 49-year-old New Westminster man is charged with driving without due care following a fatal collision with a pedestrian last fall.

Brenda Moffat was killed while on her way home on Oct. 30, 2013. Moffat, who was driving a motorized scooter, was crossing the street at Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue when she was struck by a

pickup truck, stated a media release from New Westminster police.

Paramedics were called to the scene but Moffat succumbed to her injuries a short time later, the release added.

Following a “thorough investigation” by officers with the department’s traffic unit, police have charged the driver of the pickup, David Wilson, with one count of driving without due care.

Wilson’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 12.

James Bryson is at the helm for inaugural extravaganza at new Anvil Centre theatre

Sure, directors are supposed to say they’re thrilled about whichever new show they’re at the helm of.

But when you see the smile on James Bryson’s face and feel the vibe of excitement that surrounds him, you know just how genuine his enthusiasm is.

Bryson is at the helm for Just Broadway!, a large-scale showcase that’s the first musical theatre production – and the first large-scale production of any kind – at the new Anvil Centre theatre.

“This is so exciting!” Bryson announces, casting his eye around the shiny new theatre – where, even as he chats to The Record, workers are putting the finishing touches on a few of the final details.

It’s particularly special to Bryson to be involved in the launch of the new theatre because his affiliation with New West stretches back some 25 years – he’s been with Royal City Musical Theatre for all of its productions at the Massey Theatre.

When he was asked if he was interested in having his company, James Productions, stage the first show at the Anvil Centre, there was no hesitation.

“I said, of course!” he says with a grin.

Bryson has been mulling the idea of a Broadway-focused show for a couple of years now – a show that would pull together some of the favourite songs he has encountered as RCMT’s musical director over the years.

Spotlight on talent: James Bryson is excited about the new theatre at the Anvil Centre, where he’s producing the first large-scale show, Just Broadway, coming up Nov. 20 to 22. ers. He envisioned the same sort of production, but focusing on Broadway music. So, he says with a smile, he started pulling in all his markers and recruiting some of the best talent he knows.

“I said, ‘Everybody come and let’s gather together and do a great show of Broadway music,” he says.

The result is a show that includes three top professional singers: Steve Maddock, Tracy Neff and Jennifer Hayes.

Bryson has worked with them all before – in the case of Hayes, he in fact taught her when she was a student at Centennial

Secondary School in Coquitlam – and enthuses about their level of talent.

Getting all three to agree to be in the show, he immediately started thinking about professional instrumentalists to join them.

“With Steve Maddock and company, I wanted to have somebody playing for him who is as outrageously good as he is,” Bryson says.

He found that in the person of pianist Diane Lines – “She quite possibly is the best pianist that I know,” Bryson says – plus percussionist Rob Ferguson and

Jenn Hodge on bass.

They’re joined by an eightmember vocal ensemble and 15 more instrumentalists for a lavish evening of vocal and instrumental music that will delve into the Broadway canon.

“I chose 22 of my favourite Broadway show tunes, and that was the fun of it,” Bryson says.

The songs – which will all be tied together by host Mark Turpin as the evening progresses – include such favourites as Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat and Luck Be a Lady from Guys and Dolls, On the Street Where You Live from My Fair Lady, All That

Jazz from Chicago, and I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables.

Also on the bill will be Written in the Stars from Elton John’s musical Aïda, Too Darn Hot from Kiss Me Kate, and This is the Moment from Jekyll and Hyde – the latter being a power ballad originally made famous by Broadway star Colm Wilkinson.

The evening will feature solos, group numbers choreographed by Melissa Assalone, and instrumental-only renditions, as well as appearances by some special guests – including Julia MacLean, who starred as Annie in the Royal City Musical Theatre production last year.

“This is just kind of special to me, I get to work with all these fabulous people,” Bryson says. “It is so exciting, I can’t wait.”

For it all to be happening in the new Anvil

Centre theatre just adds to his excitement. Bryson notes he was surprised but pleased by the city’s decision to include a first-class theatre in the new centre.

“It’s very progressive for the Lower Mainland,” he says “This is a real – I don’t know if you’d say coup for New West, but this is really nice.”

Artist shares journey of recovery An artistic journey towards recovery is on exhibition at the Arts Council of New Westminster gallery.

The gallery is hosting Struggling Towards Utopia, paintings by P. Thomas Wood, until Nov. 22.

Wood was a high school art teacher who, one day on his drive to work, was broadsided in the snow.

“I never could have guessed, when studying to become an artist, I would need to act as my own art teacher,” he says in a write-up about the exhibition.

Wood says that without art as his therapy, he would have become like many patients he still sees who

remain frustrated and unable to cope with the aftermath of serious injuries.

“Art provided the proper and much-needed stimuli to allow the plasticity of my brain to reconnect and heal damaged synapses,” he says.

“Finding new paths around severely damaged areas in the early stages of post-accident recovery was vital in the encouragement towards survival.”

Wood notes that, while dealing with the loss of sight in his left eye, he became fascinated with visual perception – and let his art pursue that field of investigation.

Guy Black, a Port Moody resident, organized a recent walk from the Port Moody cenotaph to the legislature in Victoria to remember the five men from Port Moody who died in the First World War. They walked through the area on Wednesday, Nov. 5 – wearing period military uniforms on loan from Parks Canada.

The walk recognizes the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War this year.

Question: When I pruned hydrangeas I stuck several stalks with healthy buds into pots.

The four lace ones grew enormous this summer, but not a bloom on one. The one mophead grew very modestly but produced a huge white bloom. Can you give me a tip on being more successful?

Beryl Wilson, Vancouver Answer: The fact the lacecap hydrangeas grew very large indicates they were concentrating on vegetative growth. I wonder if you put them in very rich soil or laced their soil with high-nitrogen fertilizer.

This fertilizer stimulates leaf and stem growth but not flowers. Nitrogen is the first number listed on soil enhancers.

Light may be another issue. Hydrangeas like very bright light but not direct sun. Also some hydrangeas tend to hold back flowers until they are closer to their maximum

!

Question: Is it still all right to eat my chard that has turned dark red? These leaves were green this summer. Will it be bitter? Why did it turn red?

Should I just pull them all for this year or just cut the tops off, leaving the roots?

Koko, Coquitlam Answer: The heat and perhaps drought associated with heat has turned your chard red. Also, it’s quite old at this point and chard doesn’t improve with age.

Yes, it could be bitter, possibly too bitter to eat.

Even if you have to leave your chard unpicked in summer because you have so many other vegetables, it can be good to keep the older leaves picked anyway. This keeps young, sweet, tender leaves coming.

You could take a cautious nibble of your chard and see for yourself if it’s edible. !

Question: Last May, we put ground cover plants in our front yard instead of grass. They have done very well. We planted wooly thyme, white thyme, Veronica Whitley and Golden Bird’s Foot. We think it will

turn out amazing, but it was quite costly.

Now winter is here much earlier than expected, and the green leaves on the trees in our yard haven’t fallen yet.

We expect the snow to melt over the next while, which will allow us to remove the leaves. What should we do with the leaves? Should we leave them on top of the ground cover plants as protection, or could you offer us any other alternative?”

David and Paulette Smith, Calgary Answer: Yes, you should leave them on top of your ground cover plants. I’m sure your plants will spend some of the winter buried under insulating snow. But Calgary also gets Chinooks which remove snow and winds that redistribute it.

If you get a major Chinook, you could get frost heaves, which are very hard on plant roots when freezing returns. In case you get high winds, you should hold in your leaves with prunings or wire. Next spring, you could rake the leaves off your ground covers and dig them into a vegetable garden.

The wheels came off the gold-medal train for Trinity Western University’s women’s soccer team.

The defending two-time Canadian Interuniversity Sports national champs were denied a record sixth Glady Bean trophy following a 5-0 loss to host and first-time national finalist Laval Rouge et Or in the championship final in Quebec City on Sunday.

Kashima, who was named a CIS tournament all-star foward, assisted on the game-winning goal by Jennifer Di Nunzio in the 33rd minute of play, earning her first of two player of the game honours for the Spartans.

In the championship final, the South Burnaby product missed a chance to tie the score 1-1, when Laval keeper Marie-Joelle Vandal robbed her on a rebound off an Alessandra Oliverio shot on goal in the 39th minute.

TWU juniors Lindsey Pulice and Isabella Di trocchio, both of Burnaby, were denied a third straight CIS title with the Spartans.

“It’s a tough result. … We didn’t play very well today and it’s probably the part that we are most disaappointed with,” said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh in a CIS press release.

“We didn’t give them a game. They were clinical and we knew that if we didn’t defend well they had weapons and those weapons showed today.”

Fraser Valley’s goalkeeper Kayla Klim of Burnaby was named the team’s player of the game, making eight saves in the match, including two huge reaction stops on Ottawa’s Pilar Khoury.

Khoury finally beat Klim on a penalty shot in the 71st minute to tie the game 1-1.

Later in stoppage time, the Gee-Gees got a break off a mistake by the Fraser Valley backline and Curtis took full advantage, getting

to the loose ball first and beating Klim to the short side.

In the semifinals, Laval defeated Fraser Valley 3-0 to earn a spot in its first-ever national final.

Klim earned her first team player of the game honour with a game-high eight saves in the Fraser Valley goal.

In the quarter-finals, Fraser Valley eked out a 2-1 victory over Memorial University in overtime with Klim holding the fort with two of her six saves coming on great efforts in the extra time.

Douglas not up to gold standard at nats

Sheridan College proved an unfriendly place to the Douglas College Royals last week.

The PacWest provincial men’s soccer champs returned home from the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association championships with just a seventh-place finish to show for it.

Junior Hyacks defeat Jugglers remain unbeaten

Eighth-seeded host Sheridan surprised everyone at this year’s nationals, taking the gold-medal final 5-4 in penalty kicks against PacWest regular season champs and playoff runner-up Vancouver Island University on Saturday.

In an uncharacteristic wide open final that was in doubt right up to the final penalty shot, both teams traded goals in a 2-2 first

half, before VIU sent the game into extra time with a successful penalty shot goal in stoppage time.

The Ontario league bronze medallists took the lead in overtime, but Vancouver Island again silenced the home crowd with a goal in the 115th minute to send the outcome to a shootout.

Sheridan sent six shooters to the penalty spot, finally winning the

school’s first men’s soccer title 6-5 on Chris Di Vixio-Mendez’s shootout winner.

It was the Ontario college’s first CCAA men’s soccer title and first medal in more than two decades since taking a bronze in 1992 and a silver in ’90.

Behind a partisan home crowd, Sheridan upset the second-seeded Royals 3-0 in the tournament opener last Wednesday.

Douglas was then eliminated from the medal round following a 2-1 loss to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology on the following day.

Last year, NAIT knocked the Royals out of gold-medal contention at the CCAA national championships.

The Royals salvaged some pride, edging Holland 2-1 in the match for seventh place.

The New Westminster Hyacks will take some bragging rights into the upcoming B.C. high school junior varsity football playoffs.

The Valley division champion Hyacks defeated previously unbeaten West division champs and No. 2 seed Notre Dame Jugglers 26-24 in an pre-playoff exhibition game at Mercer Stadium last Friday.

New Westminster is seeded third in the 12-team provincial high school playoffs behind top seed Terry Fox Secondary.

The Hyacks gave up the opening touchdown to the visitors but went ahead 7-6 on Trew Dancey’s threeyard run in the first quarter.

Josh Olango put the home Hyacks ahead by a converted touchdown on another three-yard rush.

Quarterback Lucas Sabau set up Olango’s score, connecting earlier on a 26-yard pass-and-run to Sammy Sidhu that took the ball down to the Jugglers’ six-yard line.

Sabau started the second quarter with New West’s third, short TD run after Dancey went 70 yards on a running play before being brought down on the Notre Dame one-yard line.

Olango scored his second TD of the game later in the quarter on a 30-yard run to give New West a 266 advantage at half time.

Prior to the game, the two teams agreed to play the entire second half with the backup teams.

Notre Dame outscored New West 18-0 in the second half and Robertson Yagyog stopped the Jugglers’ comeback drive, intercepting a pass in the final minute of play.

Linemen Yanni Angelopolous and Isaiah James both had solid outings, while Nick McDermid had three tackles for the Hyacks in the second half.

Both New West and Notre Dame have firstround playoff byes this week.

Varsity up against first-round hurdle

The New Westminster Hyacks toughest game of the year is also the program’s most difficult hurdle.

The varsity Hyacks have not won a B.C. high school AAA football playoff game since 2009, and this Friday’s first-round matchup against fifth-place Eastern division opponent Mt. Boucherie appears on paper to be no walkover for New Westminster.

“We need to win a playoff game,” said Hyacks head coach Farhan Lalji.

“I think (Mt. Boucherie) is better than any team we’ve beaten this year. They’re physical, and we’re going to have to work hard to beat them.”

Mt. Boucherie’s quarterback tandem haven’t exactly lit it through the air, and the pair have been sacked a total of 10 times during the regular season.

The West Kelowna team has two capable weapons in the backfield in Aiden McLeod and Zac Callaghan, who averages nearly 85 yards rushing a game, but

has a tendancy to drop the ball with a league-high six fumbles this season.

New West has not lost to Mt.Boucherie in two earlier meetings.

The Hyacks beat them 29-7 in a 2011 Homecoming Game, and the following season scrapped out a 3633 win.

New West also holds the edge against common opponents this season, but its exhibition wins against Notre Dame, Centennial and W.J. Mouat all came in the month of September.

Mt. Boucherie lost a close encounter with Notre Dame early in the season.

Winning in November takes a different mindset, said Lalji.

“We have to get used to that single-elimination environment. It’s important regardless of what happens later,” he said, alluding to a second-round matchup with No. 1 Terry Fox awaiting the winner of Friday’s playoff. “That’s the focus of this week.”

The 4-3 Hyacks meet 3-4 Mt. Boucherie in a firstround playoff on Friday at Mercer Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
