Man sentenced in New West woman’s death ‘Our family has been destroyed; our dreams have been shattered,’ says Ma Cecilia Loreto’s family Cornelia Naylor cnaylor@newwestrecord.ca

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for manslaughter and accessory after the fact to murder in the killing of New Westminster resident Ma Cecilia Loreto, whose body was found burning in a Burnaby park one year ago.

Carlo Castillo Tobias and a 15-year-old who cannot be identified under theYouth Criminal Justice Act were originally charged with first degree murder and indignity to human remains after Loreto’s body was found in Greentree Village Park in the early morning hours of March 18, 2021.

On Tuesday,Tobias pleaded guilty to manslaughter and acting as an accessory after the fact to murder instead.

In a joint sentencing submission, Crown prosecutor Jay Fogel and defence lawyer Mathew Nathanson called for a 10-year prison sentence, meaning Tobias would have eight-and-a-half years left to serve.

Loreto was killed inside her NewWestminster home, according to an

agreed statement of facts read out in court by Fogel.

Tobias and the youth had lain in wait for Loreto to return from work at about 3 p.m. on the afternoon of March 17, 2021, Fogel said.

Tobias stepped out from behind a door he was hiding behind and punched 49-year-old Loreto in the face, knocking her unconscious, but Loreto was still alive, according to the facts.

The teen, who will be tried separately, then stabbed Loreto twice with a kitchen knife, according to the facts.

Tobias had not seen the knife prior to the stabbing, Fogel said.

Tobias and the youth, who were known to each other and to Loreto, then wrapped her body up with blankets and tape.

Equipped with a jerry can of gasoline and black spray paint to disguise Loreto’s Honda Civic, which had distinctive red rims, they then drove the body to the Burnaby park, according to the facts.

They arrived at about midnight, unloaded Loreto’s body, poured gasoline on it and set it on fire, Fogel said.

Because the fire severely burned the body, a pathologist who conducted a post-mortem examination was “unable to determine a definitive cause of death,” according to the facts, but the examination did confirm Loreto was dead before her body was burned.

After setting the fire, Tobias and the teen then changed their clothes,

drove back to Loreto’s home and tried to clean up the blood, according to the facts.

Police located Loreto’s body in the park just after 2 a.m. on March 18, 2021 after a nearby resident reported the fire, Fogel said.

Four days later,Tobias confessed to his family, according to the facts, and on March 23, 2021, he turned himself in to Rich-

mond RCMP. Fogel said the fact that Loreto had been killed inside her own home and that the fire had resulted in “massive disfiguration” of her body were aggravating circumstances in the case.

He said Tobias had entered a guilty plea and had no criminal history.

Nathanson added Tobias has shown remorse and taken responsibility for his

actions, turning himself in to police and providing a “full confession.”

Nathanson also pointed to Tobias’s personal circumstances, noting he is still a young man with a supportive family and, therefore, a good candidate for rehabilitation.

Judge Peter La Prairie accepted the joint submission and sentenced Tobias to eight-and-ahalf more years in prison.

He also imposed a DNA order and a 10year weapons ban.

Loreto’s mother, brother, three sisters and niece provided victim impact statements that spoke of a family torn apart by the sudden loss of a woman described by her brother, Armand, as an “understanding sister, hardworking parent, responsible mother, trusted friend and a loving daughter to her mother.”

“Since Maricel is gone, there is no passing day that we do not feel the emptiness in our home,” Armand said. “Our family has been destroyed; our dreams have been shattered and the future looks so bleak.”

A New West resident was pepper-sprayed by two suspects who were stealing the catalytic converter from her car in the middle of the night.

The New Westminster Police Department is seeking the public’s help in locating two suspects who pepper-sprayed a resident when she caught them stealing the catalytic converter from her car.

Police say the victim was pepper-sprayed when she

went out to investigate a noise in her driveway.

The theft and assault occurred in the 900 block of Chestnut Street on March 3 at about 3:12 a.m. Following the assault, the suspects fled the area in a black truck.

Part of a vehicle’s exhaust system, catalytic converters are sought by thieves for the precious metals found inside them.

“The catalytic converter thefts, they come in waves,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar told the Record. “Right

now, I think it’s a pretty high time where thefts are happening.The timing is usually unpredictable.”

The New Westminster Police Department strongly recommends that people call 911 if they’re witnessing a catalytic converter theft in progress.

PROVINCE TAKES ACTION On March 14, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General announced the province has made regulatory changes to deter catalytic converter

thefts across British Columbia.

An amendment to the Metal Dealers and Recyclers Regulation regulates catalytic converters that are not attached to an exhaust system – and requires registered metal dealers to report each transaction, including information about the seller, to police on the day of sale.

“We are changing the rules to better fight thieves who steal catalytic converters,” said Mike Farnworth, minister of pub-

lic safety and solicitor general, in a statement.

“These thefts create costs and consequences to the livelihoods of British Columbians.”

Until the changes took effect, catalytic converters could be sold to metal dealers without providing information about the seller, allowing them to remain anonymous.The update to the Metal Dealers and Recyclers Regulation was proposed by stakeholders, including the BC Association of Police Boards.

“We believe this provides police with an important tool to close the channel on those who steal and resell these items,” said Charla Huber, president of the BC Association of Police Boards, in a news release.

ICBC claims for catalytic converter thefts in B.C. soared from 89 in 2017 to 1,953 in 2021.

During that same time, ICBC claim costs for catalytic converters increased from $356,950 in 2017 to $4 million in 2021.

Metro Vancouver's new United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre is now open. Located at 995 United Boulevard in Coquitlam, this one-stop drop-off facility for recycling and waste management is more convenient for the region's residents.

Pacific Breeze Winery located at #6-7 320 Stewardson Way is applying to the City of New Westminster and the Province’s Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) to operate a patio directly in front of the winery. Up to 20 people may be located in the patio and the total maximum occupancy of the business remains at 20 people. The proposed operating hours would be 12:00 pm-8:00 pm Sunday to Wednesday and Thursday to Saturday.

The facility replaces the nearby Coquitlam Recycling and Waste Centre, which is now closed. The Coquitlam Recycling and Waste Centre is on leased land that is being redeveloped as part of the Fraser Mills community.

The United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre, which is three times larger than the old facility, will enhance customer experience with more room to queue safely. It has twice as many weigh scales to maximize recycling and reduction opportunities. A wide range of recyclables are accepted.

B.C. politics turns into a dull affair

Of all the recent fiscal challenges faced by the BC NDP government the most daunting is looming.

Almost all of the collective agreements covering 393,000 unionized public sector employees are set to expire at the end of this month, and union expectations at the bargaining table have rarely been as high as they are now.

That is because an economic issue has suddenly appeared on the scene in a way not seen since the early 1990s. It is the rate of inflation, which has exploded in growth and now sits at more than 5%.

It is unclear whether that rate will hold, decrease or climb even higher, but for the moment we haven’t seen an annual rate that high in decades. And so inflation is being included in union messaging for the first time in a long time.

A recent newspaper advertisement jointly sponsored by five prominent public sector unions insists their members deserve a fair deal that specifically “protects their wages against inflation.”

The ad (I can’t remember the last time that many unions joined together in a common front tied to contract negotiations) was jointly sponsored by the B.C. General Employees Union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (BC), the B.C.Teachers’ Federation, the Hospital Employees’ Union and the Health Sciences Association.

If they are all taking the position that covering the current inflation rate is a minimum for a wage increase, it is going to be either an expensive round of negotiations or a disruptive one. Consider that public wages and compensation consume about $38.6 billion annually, or more than 50% of all government revenue.

A 1% wage increase

across the board for all unionized employees costs about $310 million. Nonunion managers tend to get a matching increase to union workers, and a similar 1% raise for them costs about $70 million.

Since any wage increase is built into the “base” and therefore is part of every budget going forward - it is easy to see how the dollars associated with wage hikes pile up.

For example, an annual 1% increase costs about $2.5 billion over three years.This is the normal length of a contract, although there are signs some unions may be looking for a two-year deal.

A 3% annual increase costs about $5.6 billion, while a 5% annual hike would cost $9.5 billion.

The government has set aside more than $10 billion in contingencies over the next three years, in anticipation of an expensive bargaining round. But contingencies also cover emergencies such as a bad wildfire season, so it cannot all be earmarked for contract settlements.

In any event, there are already signs this is going to be a rocky ride at the table.The BCGEU has said its set of talks have “stalled” with the major outstanding issue being wages. It says a “gaping chasm” exists between it and the employer when it comes to wage proposals.

I wonder whether a way to bridge that chasm is by going the route of generous signing bonuses?

Union negotiators don’t like that because they would rather build the compensation base with higher percentage wage hikes, but a more realistic and attainable goal may be getting nice, plump government cheques to their members at a time of financial hurting for many.

Police were warning residents about a burglar with a signature technique for making sure homeowners never caught them in the act.The NWPD said more than 50 residents reported coming home and not being able to unlock their doors. And, once they managed to get inside, they found money, jewelry and small electronics missing.There were no signs of forced entry, according to police, and the thief appeared to be an expert at picking deadbolt locks.The culprit would then jam a toothpick into the lock to buy time for a getaway.

Letters Letter from Kyiv Editor: My name is Valentina Radchenko. I have worked at the railroad station since 2006.

I have my own store there to sell trinkets and souvenir products. I had four such stores before the pandemic; now there is one left.

We started to make a bit of a comeback from the crisis starting in the summer of 2021. We made plans about expansion, and in February 2022 we were able to get another sales point.

We put all our savings into repairing it and buying the products to sell. February is always considered the most difficult month for sales, and this year was no exception, so we were not able to recoup the money that we invested.

There were also plans to open a flower shop at the train station, but the start of the war changed all that.

The first days were the most frightening. The constant blasts and air raid sirens did not let you relax and rest. We slept three to four hours.

Nobody thought about work during those days, we only thought about surviving. There were so many emotions on those days, from fear, despair and bitterness to anger. You don’t think about the possibility of being left without a job or without an apartment. You only think about how to save your life and the lives of your children and grandchildren.

At this time we also had to close the store and evacuate all the employees. They lost their

jobs when the war started. This is nine people in total, but we could not continue working because it would jeopardize their safety.

Our store is set up so that there is no possibility to close it. There are so many products there, and it is impossible to move them under current conditions. We took the most valuable things; the rest we kept on the shelves.

It was impossible to buy any kind of plastic to cover them up because the air raid sirens were screaming all day, and it was very dangerous to go and buy something. We covered them up with an ordinary net and left.

Now I have had to flee Kyiv with my daughter and grandson, who is three years old. But the men stayed behind in the city to protect our home. After being in Kyiv for seven days, even now when I am in the western part of Ukraine, I still wake up from every movement and sound.

Today there was a helicopter flying overhead, and I started trembling even though I understand that it cannot belong to the occupants.

War is a state when you forget what sleeping is. You sleep three to four hours a day. You are tired, but you cannot sleep anymore. This has been the case for more than 11 days now.

Every day I am praying for our defenders who are risking their lives to try and protect us and free Ukraine from these inhuman people.

Heritage Revitalization Agreement (HRA) and Heritage Designation Bylaw applications have been received for 102 Seventh Avenue, a corner property (shown in bold on the adjacent map). The project would protect and restore a 1941 heritage house with a secondary rental suite. In exchange the HRA would allow subdivision and construction of an infill duplex fronting First Street with two family-friendly units.

The heritage house would be on a 308.4 sq. m. (3,320.0 sq. ft.) lot and the new infill duplex on a 246.1 sq. m. (2,648.6 sq. ft.) lot. Smaller lot sizes, higher densities, and construction of the duplex are the primary Zoning Bylaw relaxations proposed by the HRA. The following minor siting relaxations are also requested: reduced rear yard setback (heritage house); reduced front and north side setbacks (duplex); and, 3% site coverage increase (duplex).

The primary Zoning Bylaw relaxations proposed through the HRA for the heritage and infill houses include density, lot size, site coverage, front yard setbacks, and off-street parking spaces. Two additional relaxations are required to the proposed below grade windows and to the sunken patio for the infill house. One relaxation (to the floor space above grade) is required to regularize the existing heritage house.

New West building getting an upgrade Brow of the Hill apartment will become more resilient to extreme weather with planned retrofit

A New West apartment is among six buildings targeted for retrofits aimed at improving the lives of residents and benefitting the environment.

The province, along with BC Housing, the City of Vancouver, the Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation, the BC Non-Profit Housing Association and the Pembina Institute, have announced the next stage in the Reframed Lab initiative, a building retrofit design program launched in June 2020. Six design teams have been selected to develop retrofit designs for six low- to mid-rise social housing buildings in

New Westminster, Kamloops, Coquitlam, North Vancouver,Vancouver and Victoria.

Williams Engineering Canada will develop retrofit designs for Crown Manor, a building that’s operated by the Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation.The 29-unit building is located at 430 Ninth St. in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood.

A press release from the Ministry of Attorney General states the six design teams will exchange ideas on cutting carbon pollution (including technological solutions such as heat pumps, heat-recovery systems and low-carbon materials) and driving down energy demand and improving climate-change

resiliency.They’ll also explore innovations in seismic upgrades and on-site solar generation.

“The buildings’ tenants will not be displaced from their homes during renovations, as most of the work will be on the buildings’ exteriors,” said the press release. “Work is scheduled to begin in fall 2022.”

The buildings selected for retrofits range in size from 11 to 50 units. All totalled, they provide 189 units of housing for families, seniors and people living with physical disabilities, mental-health and substance-use challenges.

According to the province, residents of these six buildings will soon benefit from renovations that will

make their homes safer, more energy-efficient, less polluting and more resilient to extreme weather.

“The climate emergency has arrived, and people living in non-profit housing are among the most vulnerable to its impacts,” said Jill Atkey, CEO of the BC NonProfit Housing Association. “At the same time, the non-profit housing sector is one of the largest energy consumers in B.C.The six projects announced today will help us develop a path forward to ensure people are protected and our footprint is reduced.”

The Ministry of Attorney General says the retrofit projects aim to reduce annual energy demand by

more than 50% and carbon emissions by approximately 80%. Upgrades to the building envelope are intended to reduce thermal heat loss, drafts, moisture and mould buildup, which will reduce utility costs and improve indoor air quality.

The Pembina Institute, a non-profit founded in 1985, provides research, analysis and recommendations to inform policies and practices related to energy.

“In the midst of a climate emergency, B.C. has an opportunity to lead the world with local knowhow and products for the renovation wave that will be required in all cities,” Tom-Pierre Frappé-Sénéclauze, B.C. director for

the Pembina Institute, said in a news release. “With careful design, deep retrofits not only reduce energy bills and carbon pollution, but they can bring health benefits, resilience to climate risks, increased seismic resistance and extended life for our crucial housing infrastructure.”

The province is supporting the design and capital costs of this project through funding from the Capital Renewal Fund, a 10-year $1.1-billion investment intended to preserve and improve B.C.’s 51,000 units of social housing.This initiative has also received $460,000 from the province’s CleanBC Building Innovation Fund.

That’s one of the reasons our annual Design an Ad special supplement continues to be popular in Burnaby. The Burnaby Now, local businesses and organizations, and the Burnaby School District, team up and ask city students to design newspaper ads for the special section.

Every year, the students create insightful, creative, thoughtful – and often humorous – advertisements that highlight the strengths of their subjects while also conveying compelling messages at times.

Businesses and groups can select which students’ advertisements get to run in the section. This year once again, instead of a professional photographer being able to visit the schools, the teachers have graciously sent some into us! The ads and photos of students are put together by our team at the Burnaby Now and then another Design an Ad section is complete.

Creativity is such an important part of learning … it’s about how we express ourselves as individuals and how we showcase our views of the world around us. That’s why our school district is so excited to participate in this annual event, Design an Ad. This partnership with the community and our local paper is a great example of how we can work together, for the benefit of all. And it’s something we know our students get very excited about each year.

So to our students: whether you’re aspiring marketers or budding young artists, future advertising strategists or destined to be hobby crafters, I want to applaud the work you’ve shared this year. And I hope you’ll always strive to hold onto the creativity and passion reflected in it.

The New West Grand Prix won’t be taking to the streets of downtown New Westminster in 2022.

BC Superweek has announced its members have made the difficult decision to put the professional cycling series on hiatus until 2023.

“The events that make up BC Superweek require significant planning and resources, and as communities continue to navigate the impacts of the pandemic, there is still a great deal of uncertainty in regards to event sponsorship and international travel for race participants,” said a BC Superweek press release. “These hurdles make it difficult for race organizers to make the essential preparations to host a BC Superweek series this July.”

Along with the New West Grand Prix, the Tour de Delta, Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix, PoCo Grand Prix and

Tour de White Rock are on hiatus for 2022.The City of Burnaby, however, has indicated it will host the Giro di Burnaby in some form this summer as an independent event.

BC Superweek organizers say they’re looking forward to reconvening in the coming months, with the hope of bringing worldclass professional cycling back to the Lower Mainland in 2023. Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series, BC Superweek features more than $140,000 in prize money with nine races over 10 days.

Instead, council approved a motion to have staff look at alternative routes for a race in New West and to examine what other communities are doing regarding the Superweek Pro Cycling Week.

“I’d hate to think that Superweek could move forward, and only our event was the one that was not able to go forward; I’d hate to see that happen,” said Coun. Patrick Johnstone, who put forward the motion. “Because other communities are still making their decisions and considering whether to hold an event or not, I’d hate to see us be sort of the domino in other communities saying ‘the event can’t go on,’ and that be the reason why the entire week doesn’t go on if there’s not a public health reason or another reason for it not to go on.”

If 2022 is feeling bleak and dreary, it’s time to nourish your soul with art.

New Westminster’s galleries and art spaces have numerous options for you to check out in March.

Here are some highlights: EIGHTH & EIGHT Eighth & Eight is the new arts complex that includes the Massey Theatre, Plaskett Gallery and surrounding studios, rehearsal rooms and other creative spaces at 735 Eighth Ave. You can find two separate exhibitions here, so be sure to set aside time for both.

First there’s the Plaskett Gallery, the longstanding gallery adjacent to the theatre lobby. It’s hosting a new exhibition, B&W On Film: Photography by Kevin Green, exploring various locations around B.C., including New Westminster, Burnaby,Tofino and Qualicum Beach. It runs until March 31.

Down the corridor you can find In-Visible, an exhibition of work by New Westminster Secondary School students that grew out of an intergenerational partnership, Elders in Our Midst. Students were teamed up with elders from the community and got to know them before creating portraits.

Their works will be on display on the main level until April 29.

Both spaces are open to the public 1 to 4 p.m.

GALLERY AT QUEEN’S PARK The Arts Council of New Westminster presents Contention: Male Figures in Wrestling, running until March 27 at the Gallery at Queen’s Park.

The exhibition features the work of Clayton Stephens, who says he took to drawing as a way of grappling with his own struggle to create art.

“Each drawing is not me sitting calmly. It is me vs. a photo and a round in the ring,” the Surrey-based artist said in an exhibition statement.

“In an attempt to try to distance myself from that struggle, I decided to let the figures themselves be the ones struggling. The wrestlers in each drawing are stills from college wrestling videos.

Each pair are frozen from actions of fighting, arm-twisting and headlocks.

Both figures are fighting confidently to win against the other. Each fiveminute skirmish is purely masculine, and you can see the dedication in each of their eyes to overcome their opponent.

The gallery is in Centennial Lodge, near the bandshell, and it’s open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Admission is free.

Folks lined up for up to two hours to get a taste of the sweet treats being served up at the newYUM Gourmet Donuts in Sapperton.

Pastry chef Kim Collishaw and partner John McMahon are thrilled to openYUM Gourmet Donuts in New West.

“I think our donuts are a little different than everybody else’s. I think they’re a little fancier.They’re not just dipped with a bit of stuff on them.There’s a lot more work that goes into them,” said Collishaw. “I am all about flavour profiles.”

While working at Telus, Collishaw baked up all kinds of treats for her coworkers, who urged her to attend culinary school because her baked goods

were so delicious. Collishaw took their advice and attended Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.

For 17 years, Collishaw was a pastry chef at Culinary Capers Catering – creating delicious pastries for events attended by the likes of U2 and U.S. President Bill Clinton.When COVID hit and the catering company closed for good, Collishaw began pondering a change.

Collishaw began baking brioche donuts and testing out different flavours.

As word spread about the gourmet donuts, Collishaw and McMahon began hunting for a storefront.

Seven months after securing a space at 468 East Columbia St., Collishaw and McMahon opened YUM Gourmet Donuts on Saturday, March 19.

was any indication, there’s a big appetite for donuts in New West – with 1,000 donuts selling out in four hours on Saturday and 4.5 hours on Sunday.

YUM Gourmet Donuts will be open Thursday to Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving up two vegan options, apple fritters and an assortment of artisan donuts each week – focusing on quality over quantity.

“There is going to be up to 14 flavours of do-

nuts every week,” Collishaw said. “We’ll change our flavours weekly.There might be some flavours we do every week – obviously the fritters. And there are certain flavours that people love, so we have to make sure we have those.”

Carrot cake, bacon maple, raspberry lime and strawberry shortcake are among the flavours that will be featured at any given time.

“People like the citrusy ones, like the key lime or lemon meringue, so we will always make sure something like that is on the menu,” Collishaw said. “People like the fruity ones.”

As a trained pastry chef, Collishaw considers the flavour profile when concocting her recipes – considering texture and flavour, so people experi-

ence the “perfect bite.”

Collishaw is always coming up with new recipes, sometimes jotting down ideas in the middle of the night. And that’s exactly when she hits the YUM Gourmet Donuts kitchen – preparing topping, fillings and dough for about 1,000 donuts a day.

“Once they’re gone, we’re sold out,” she said.

“We can’t just whip up another batch to do.”

YUM’s special brioche dough takes 24 hours to prepare.

“It’s a process,” Collishaw said. “The dough takes a long time to make because it’s not just instant stuff.There are four rises involved with this dough. It develops the flavour.There’s a lot of butter, so the butter flavour comes out.”

New West program gets preschoolers off to strong start

Preschoolers in New Westminster are being given a chance to learn and play in the best possible place: outdoors.

The New Westminster school district is launching a new StrongStart: Explore Outdoors program for families with kids who haven’t yet started kindergarten.

StrongStart Early Learning Centres are free, drop-in programs for preschool-aged children (from infancy to age five) and their parents or caregivers.

Early childhood educators are on hand to lead activities such as storytime, music and art – all of which is designed to introduce small children to learning through play.

The program currently runs at three district schools: Skwo:wech Elementary, Connaught Heights Elementary and

Queensborough Middle School.

Now the district is adding a new location: outside at Hume Park.

“There are many benefits to getting outdoors to play. Children have opportunities to develop physical literacy skills and participate in heart-pumping physical activity,” said a school district notice.

“Outdoor spaces allow children greater freedom and a chance to face different challenges, which builds their resilience, independent and self-confidence.”

The program will run every Monday from April 4 to June 20, from 10 a.m. to noon.There’s no session on Easter Monday (April 18) or Victoria Day

Farmers Market returns to Tipperary Park

Starting March 31, the New West Farmers Market is returning to Tipperary Park, where it will run every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. until Nov. 3.

Tipperary Park is at 315 Queens Ave., next to New Westminster City Hall.

Here are more detaiils on what’s involved.

WHAT WILL I FIND THERE? Lily Nichol, the market’s assistant manager, said three food trucks will be attending on the opening day – and on almost every Thursday this season.Tokyo Katsu-sand, the beloved Bread and Cheese Truck, and Rolled West Coast (which serves ice cream) are attending the March 31 market.

“We will have alcohol, including cider, spirits, beer and wine, chocolate, bakeries, coffee, honey, seasonal produce, vegan items, pet products, candles, soap, and so much more!” she said. “We’ve got 58 vendors booked for March 31, but at our highest points in the summer we will have as many as 73 vendors.We have 110 different vendors joining us throughout the season and we are ready for our biggest year ever.”

ARE ANY COVID RESTRICTIONS STILL IN PLACE? Last year’s market at Tipperary Park featured a one-way route through the market, a limited number of shoppers and a request that visitors wear masks and keep their distance.

“At this time, our

COVID restrictions have all been lifted, but we will still have our staff and volunteers in masks and will have sanitizer available,” Nichol said. “Dogs are now welcome again.”

WHAT’S THE MARKET’S VIBE? Opening day will feature live music from New Westie Nate Batara and balloon animals for kids.

Weather permitting, people will be able to explore the Vancity portable mindfulness labyrinth.

“We expect a laid back, family-friendly and fun vibe for the season,” Nichol said. “All season long, the community can expect children’s activities, fresh, local food, live music, and so much more.

The New West Farmers Market is a community hub, and we will continue

to grow and thrive with our amazing community.”

WHAT’S NEW? Quinn Kliewer has taken on the new role as market manager, having started out as assistant manager last year. Nichol, who was the market’s manager, and Kliewer have now switched roles, giving Nichol more time to devote to other things.

“Quinn is an amazing leader who moved to New Westminster four years ago from Alberta. She has a background in the arts and hospitality. She is such an asset to our small team, and I love working with her,” Nichol said. “I am excited to see the market grow with her!”

Nichol said the farmers market is grateful to the City of New Westminster for being an ongoing generous supporter of the market and for allowing it to continue operating with a larger footprint to accommodate its increasing vendor count.

“Last year we moved into a section of the parking lot in front of city hall to form an ‘L’ shape alongside the Tipperary lot,” she explained. “This worked well because most city employees were still working from home and there was lot to spare, and as employees have started to go back they’ve generously let us continue to use some of the city lot to address our increased demand for space.”

The market is also thankful for the generosity of the New Westmin-

ster Rotary, which helped the market recover from break-ins during the 2021 season.

“Last year we had our trailer destroyed from a break-in, where the metal was torn off the frame of the trailer and ICBC wrote it off.We then had a temporary shipping container which got broken into, and about half of the contents was stolen in a second break-in,” Nichol said in an email to the Record. “Between community donations, the ICBC refund and money from Rotary, we have been able to purchase the container we were renting, replace everything that was stolen, and we will be undertaking a project to equip it with shelving – and it will have a mural painted on the side this season as well.”
