It appears that seven is a not-so-lucky number for Rexall Drugs in NewWestminster. Seven years after open-

ing in uptown NewWest, Rexall Drugs is getting set to close the doors to its store at the corner of Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue. Staff confirmed the store is closing April 21 but referred all questions to

head office, which has yet to respond to the Record’s calls and emails. The site at 700 Sixth St. was the longtime home to BlockbusterVideo. In 2013, city council approved a development per-

mit that allowed the construction of a two-storey commercial building. In 2014, a former planner at city hall told the Record that Rexall’s new building would include an escalator, saying it was a

sign that the city is “growing up a bit” as most retail in the area is on the ground level and the second level of those buildings is usually filled with medical offices. The 10,226-square-foot store opened in 2014.

In 2018, a number of media outlets reported that the U.S.-based McKesson Corp., which purchased the Rexall chain in 2016, would be closing 40 stores inWestern Canada and Ontario.

If you’ve always wanted to crack open a beer or enjoy a glass of wine in a New West park, this is the year you can do it legally. On Monday night, council approved Coun. Patrick Johnstone’s motion to allow adults to drink alcohol in designated areas of six parks from 11 a.m. to dusk, seven days a week. Johnstone said North Vancouver and Port Coquitlam had pilot projects related to the consumption of alcohol in parks last year and are expanding those programs in 2021 because of their “positive” experiences. “I think 2021 is an important year. I think that we have, again, a summer

without festivals, a summer without big events, a summer where we really won’t have restaurants and bars in a typical way that we would expect,” he said. “I think the parks are going to be really important social gathering spaces for our expanding bubbles, hopefully our greatly expanding bubbles as we go through the end of the pandemic period. I was hoping we’d be able to try this out as a pilot this year and then have staff report back to us at the end of the year about any problems, any potential to change or adapt or shrink or grow the program for 2022.” Once the bylaw is drafted and approved, people will legally be able to drink alcohol at several park locations: Port Royal Park (crescent field and

Johnstone said he proposed these locations because these parks have public washrooms that are open during park hours. He said they’re spots where people picnic and are in locations that won’t restrict the use of the parks to people who don’t want to be around alcohol. Coun. Mary Trentadue said she isn’t opposed to trying this out as a pilot project but is curious to see who it benefits and who it doesn’t. She said she doesn’t want to see more policing in city parks to make sure people are following the rules.

NewWestminster school trustees have voted to remove police liaison officers from schools. The school board’s education committee voted Tuesday night to recommend the board discontinue the long-running program, which has been on pause this year while the board considered its fate.The three officers who normally work in schools are all funded by the NewWestminster Police Department and have been reassigned to other duties during the 2020/21 school year. The full school board will vote on the matter April 27, but the board is unlikely to overturn the recommendation of its education committee, since all the same trustees make up both entities. The vote came after passionate presentations from parents and activ-

ists speaking to the harm that the police presence in schools does to racialized communities, in particular to Black and Indigenous students and staff. Mary Trentadue, mother of a Black child, told trustees BIPOC students experience racism on a daily basis. She said cancelling the police liaison program would reduce risk and harm for Black and Indigenous youth. “Youth and families are asking for police to be removed.Why is further proof required?” she said. “We ought to be centring students and families in this request, hearing them and not asking for additional evidence.” Alejandra López Bravo, who works with the school district’s sanctuary schools committee, told trustees the presence of police in schools runs counter to the principles of the district’s sanctuary schools policy – which gives families with precarious immigration status a chance

to enrol their children in school without fear of being deported. She said there is an ongoing fear that police will share information with the Canada Border Services Agency. AndreaVásquez Jiménez, co-director of the Toronto-based organization LAEN (Latinx, Afro-Latin-America, Abya Yala Education Network) and a strategist for the Police-Free Schools Canada campaign, told trustees about her work in getting police liaison officers removed from the Toronto District School Board. She said there is “more than enough evidence” to make an immediate move to police-free schools and to take steps to dismantle what she termed the “police to prison and deportation pipeline.” She said reforms – such as more training or a new program structure – would simply perpetuate the same harms. City Mom, daughter traumatized by fallen construction fence Theresa McManus

Construction fencing at the Canada Games Pool site has been reinforced after it toppled over on a mom and her daughter on the weekend. The pair had left swimming lessons at Canada Games Pool on Saturday morning and was walking along East Sixth Avenue when the incident occurred at about 10:15 a.m. on April 10. “The mom and the daughter were walking along and there was a strong gust of wind. It toppled onto them,” said Christy Mereigh, the city’s project manager, strategic services. “Some passersby stopped and lifted the construction fencing to assist them out.” Construction of the new aquatic and commu-

nity centre had begun only days earlier with site preparation work, including installation of construction fencing. “It must have been a pretty strong gust of wind to blow the fencing down. It was not normal for that for construction fencing, but it happened,” Mereigh said. “They were in the setup stage. It was just being brought on site and set up.” Mereigh said further anchoring work was scheduled to be done to the fence on April 12 and 13. “The fences were all bolted together,” said Mereigh, who visited the site after the incident. “Each panel had been tied together, which, when it did topple, all the fencing came down.” Several passersby came to the mother and young girl’s assistance. One per-

son ran to the fire hall to get help, and several people worked together to lift the heavy fencing so the mom could get out from where she’d been pinned. The mom and daughter, who were shaken up by the incident, went to Royal Columbian Hospital to be checked out. According to Mereigh, the contractor contacted him about the incident, and he called the mom on Saturday. He said she told him she didn’t sustain any fractures in the incident but was told she may have some bruising and muscle pains in the days to come. “I asked how the daughter was doing. She said she was outside playing normally, but she was going to keep an eye on her,” he said. Mereigh said the incident was undoubtedly quite frightening for the

mom and her daughter and is something the city takes seriously. “We are NewWestminster.We do care,” he said. Although the contractor had planned to anchor the fencing around the work site, Mereigh said that’s not always done with construction fencing. “At most construction

sites they don’t usually anchor down the fences,” he said. “They are all locked together, and they have a foot brace at the bottom … so they don’t tilt either way.” As a result of the incident, he said the contractor immediately anchored and braced the fencing at the site. He said “big lock

blocks” were also being installed as extra protection. “It’s not going to happen again,” he said. “It is going to be rock solid.” Mereigh, a longtime employee of the city, said he’s unaware of any past incidents where an entire row of construction fence has fallen down because of wind. “This is an oddity,” he said. The mom involved in this “surreal and very traumatic” incident told the Record she hopes this type of incident doesn’t happen to anyone else. The BC Building Code requires the installation of fencing where hazardous construction activity is occurring, so this fencing was being installed in preparation for the upcoming construction activity at the site.

Liberals, Greens change tactics

B.C.’s two opposition parties are offering sharp critiques of the province’s public health policies aimed at fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, but they are taking decidedly different approaches. The BC Liberals have focused on what they say is a lack of transparency and accurate reporting when it comes to providing clear data associated with the province’s COVID-19 situation.They want better and more information regarding cases, vaccines and testing.They want the release of extensive demographic and geographic information. The B.C. Greens want that too (who doesn’t?) but that party appears to have completely broken with provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. They issued a blistering news release last week, accusing the government of falling down on all kinds of fronts when it comes to fighting the virus. Although they did not name her specifically, given the fact Henry is setting the policies and the rules it is clear the Greens’ attack was aimed specifically at her performance. The Greens want an all-encompassing threeweek lockdown, including the closure of schools and stronger enforcement of public health orders and a non-essential travel ban. It seems clear the Greens are trying to tap into what appears to be rising public frustration, anger and bewilderment in the face of rapidly escalating daily case counts of COVID-19 and a steady rise in hospitalizations. The BC Liberals obviously sense that public mood as well, but they have not called for an extensive lockdown or a travel ban or really anything that goes much beyond what is being done right now. Rather, they have mostly said what is

currently being done can simply be done better (being a pro-business party makes it unlikely it would want to shutter the economy like the Greens). I have pointed out before that opposition parties are walking a tricky political tightrope when it comes to questioning public health measures. Challenging governments is one thing, but taking on science comes with a risk. Nevertheless, the Greens clearly feel more emboldened now to criticize the government on this front and likely think they are on surer ground with the public. Perhaps, but I don’t see much evidence that our society wants to shut down the economy for three weeks in the elusive hope that such a move would stop the spread of the virus. Advocates of this “COVID-zero” approach point to success stories in distant places like New Zealand,Taiwan and Vietnam, yet fail to explain why various lockdown measures in much of Europe have not succeeded in stopping the spread there. As well, it has never been made clear how lockdowns and “stay-at-home” orders can be enforced. Various authorities can indeed shut businesses, but do people really want police checkpoints on highways and ferries asking to see papers that prove your travel is essential? It seems that only mass vaccinations are going to get us out of this worsening situation and we will not be at that stage for many weeks yet. The political rhetoric over public health will continue to ramp up.The next few weeks will see some ugly COVID-19 numbers in this province, and the political debate will reflect that. Churches hit by suspicious fires

The Westminster Seventh Day Adventist Church became the third church on 10th Avenue to be hit suspicious fires in six weeks. Firefighters were called to the church early on Sept. 30. New West crews arrived first and laid hose, and Burnaby crews fought the blaze but couldn’t save the building. One Burnaby fire captain was injured when the roof collapsed. Six weeks earlier, firefighters had been called to fires set at Our Lady of Mercy and the New Westminster Evangelical Free Church.

Be kind because you don’t know what someone else is dealing with Editor: This is a request for New Westminster residents to continue to be kind and be patient. I know everyone is getting more and more irritable with COVID-19 restrictions, but it is no excuse for treating others poorly. I was recently at a mall in New Westminster. This mall has two main elevators, where one tends to be out of order. I have a back injury and I have pain a majority of the time because of it. My disability is invisible and I’m in my mid30s, which makes it difficult to tell I have a handicap. I began to be in a lot of pain during my trip to this mall and I decided to go home. I was unable to complete all my shopping, but I decided I’d have to come back when the pain wasn’t as bad. I waited for the one working elevator to come to the floor after I pressed the button. No one was there when I got there. When it finally came, there was a line of people waiting to use the elevator. As I got on with the pain getting worse I couldn’t wait to get on and grab the bar inside to give me support. My

limbs were going numb from the pain and it was getting worse. As soon as I got in, a passerby told me to get off to let on a senior with a walker. I told her about my injury and my pain and I had to get home. This ignorant passerby then says to me, “it doesn’t matter.” I tried to protest as the doors closed after the senior got on with me. I was appalled at the callousness of this ignorant creature of nature. Apparently my pain and medical condition didn’t matter since I’m not a senior. I have complete respect for seniors and those with disabilities, but I have had it with people like that. Just because I don’t have a walker to show my disability doesn’t mean I don’t have limitations. My disability is invisible, and I know there are countless others who also have invisible disabilities who have also been subjected to ignorant people who continue to judge a book by its cover. Every New Westminster resident who wants a COVID-19 immunization will get one – and everyone can get a jump start on the process by registering in advance. That message was re-

iterated at a community forum held April 8 via Zoom to answer local residents’ questions about the COVID vaccine rollout in New Westminster. Mayor Jonathan Cote and Coun. Chinu Das hosted the forum alongside guests from Fraser Health: Dr. Ingrid Tyler,

medical health officer and executive medical director, and Sharat Chandra, part of the vaccine logistics team. A few highlights:

Indigenous adults (aged 18 and up) and all people declared clinically extremely vulnerable (who are in possession of a medical letter to that effect) can also get vaccinated now. Chandra said Fraser Health will monitor the situation at Anvil Centre and added that, if there’s a need to reach other parts of the community, Fraser Health may consider other options in future. Fraser River Discovery Centre wants to help folks meet the “nature neighbours” in their neighbourhoods. With people staying closer to home because of the pandemic, Fraser River Discovery Centre decided to tailor this month’s River Basin Day event around giving them a chance to meet their “nature neighbours.” “Everybody knows their human neighbours,” said Stephen Bruyneel, the centre’s director of external relations and development. “But do you know which birds live in your neighbourhood? Which bugs? Do you know the names of the plants growing on the sidewalk? Do

you want to? If you do, then this month’s River Basin Days is for you.” On Saturday, April 17, guests will join a Discovery Centre educator on Zoom for one hour, when they will learn how to set up and conduct a biological survey of their neighbourhood.The survey creates a list of all the species that live in an area. Participants will then go out on their own to conduct the survey, and they’ll later share their findings with the other workshop participants through an invite-only video message board. “The survey can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, so all ages and levels of experience are welcome,” Bruyneel said. “You don’t need any prior knowledge,

as our workshop will give you all the tools you need to conduct a successful survey that will help you meet your nature neighbours.” The activity, taking place on Saturday, April 17 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., is free with paid admission to the centre. After registering and paying online at www. fraserriverdiscovery.org/ rbd, attendees will receive admission tickets (which can be used anytime they want to visit the centre) by email. River Basin Days, a series of public programs geared towards families, takes place on the second Saturday of every month at rotating locations around the Fraser River Basin. SOPHIE (15+ YRS OLD)

Sophie is a newly diagnosed diabetic cat who also has early kidney disease. She is the easiest cat to handle, very sweet and never gets upset despite the poking and prodding. Sophie is on a veterinary prescription food, which she enjoys. She requires insulin twice a day, and while her blood glucose has levelled out nicely, she will require testing periodically to make sure the diabetes is being managed properly. This can be done at home but of course, she will also need check-ups with the veterinarian. Her new home should be prepared for the extra time and ﬁnancial responsibility a diabetic cat requires. Her kidney disease is not at the stage where she requires any special treatment but as it is progressive, she will need treatment in the future (ﬂuids, supplements, etc.).

Sass Jordan is a very shy, nervous girl. She will need a patient, loving home. She loves her greens, hay, and pellets. Once she gets to a more healthy weight, she will need less pellets. Sass is housed with Joan Jett, and we are deﬁnitely looking for a home that will adopt them as a pair. They get a lot of comfort from each other. The veterinarian estimated Joan as 2 years old, and Sass as 4 years old, so it’s possible that Sass is Joan’s mother. Joan is the white/dark brown rabbit, and Sass is the white/black rabbit.

Rabbits are very social creatures and do need more attention and space than most people think. Sass is not yet 100% litter-trained, but we have seen a big improvement since she arrived. Sass is approximately 4 years old, and we believe she is an English Spot. She has been examined by a veterinarian, has been RHDV2 vaccinated, spayed and microchipped. The adoption fee is $75 for a pair of bonded rabbits.

We believe Stevie Nicks is an English Spot. She is a bit nervous at ﬁrst, but comes around nicely. She will come up to check you out, and even give your face a little sniff. She loves her greens, hay, and pellets. She is improving with her litter-box training and has been examined by a veterinarian, has been RHDV2 vaccinated, spayed and microchipped. She is being housed with her siblings, Axl Rose and Debbie Harry, and we are hoping to ﬁnd a home with at least one of them. Rabbits are very social creatures and do need more attention and space than most people think. We will consider an individual rabbit placement, or an adoption with one of her siblings. The adoption fee for Stevie alone is $50, but if you adopt a pair, their fee together is only $75.

Meet our adorable boy rats, Gus, Mac, and Dwight! These boys were born in our shelter after we took in their mother, Juno, from another overwhelmed shelter. Gus is the adorable blue rex boy. Mac is the handsome red-eyed white boy. Dwight is the cute blue rex boy with the white blaze on his forehead. The three boys seem to be happy and healthy, although they are a bit shy. Ideally, we would love them to go to a home with rat experience. They need respectful and positive interactions to help them blossom into the well-socialized rats we know they can be. We are adopting them out together. The adoption fee for the trio is $15.

Little Pirate came in as a stray. He was found in a popular park by a kind woman. The staff at a nearby dragon boat shop looked after him until we picked him up. He is a very social little fellow and likes to ride around on shoulders. He seems happy getting to know his roommate, Hyack. Hyack, the handsome fellow was found outside the woodshop at New West Secondary. With some rest, good food, and TLC, he has got a jump in his step again. He is a bit nervous so would beneﬁt from an understanding, patient, experienced budgie home. He is not hand-tame and if he is pushed past his comfort zone, he may nip. He took a quick liking to his new budgie neighbor “Pirate”. We would love to ﬁnd them a home together as they instantly bonded.

Get ready for the Walk 30 Challenge Theresa McManus

New West and Burnaby residents will once again battle for supremacy in the Walk 30 Challenge. After a one-year hiatus because of COVID-19, residents in the neighbouring communities will lace up their shoes and compete to see who can rack up the most steps during a five-week walking challenge. From May 10 to June 13, participants will track their walking stats in an attempt to help their community come out on top and win the Gold Shoe trophy and bragging rights. Developed by the City of New Westminster and City of Burnaby Healthier Community Partnership committees, the annual health promotion campaign encourages com-

munity members to walk 30 minutes a day for five weeks. Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST) is coordinating this year’s Walk 30 Challenge.The challenge’s website includes an “Isabel’s Walks” section that includes a map with suggested walking routes. This year’s challenge is also teaming up with local businesses in Burnaby and New West to offer weekly draw prizes. MARKETPLACE MCLEAN, Joan April 15, 1925 − March 31, 2021 It is with our heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our much−loved mum, grandmother, and great−grandmother, Joan McLean, just weeks before her 96th birthday. On Wednesday, March 31, 2021, Joan peacefully passed away at Queens Park Care Centre in New Westminster. Joan was born in London England and came to Canada in 1945 as a war bride with her husband, John, and became a mother to 12 children. She was predeceased by her husband, John (1981); five sons, Robert, Bruce, Gerald, Brien, and Stephen; one grandson, Michael; and two great−grandsons, Caleb McLean and Isaiah Gillespie. Joan is survived by her sons, Daniel (Judy), Rodney (LeeAnne), and Richard (Cissy); and her four daughters, Marlynn Couture, Deborah Anne McLean, Doreen Manning (Rick), and Janice McLean. Joan was a proud grandmother to 25 grandchildren, great−grandma to 35, and great− great−grandmother to two. Mum was an amazing woman with silent strength and courage. She overcame many challenges in life, moving to Canada as a young woman and raising 12 children. She taught us all to preserver and to never give up. Mom enjoyed her retirement years travelling a little bit and volunteering as Chair for the BC Senior Games for six years. She enjoyed her many friends and spending time at the New Westminster Century House. No service at this present time. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Recreation Department at Queens Park Care Centre. We are so grateful to the Queens Park Centre Recreation Team and Nursing staff who showed mom nothing but kindness and love. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
