City shuts down its community facilities

The City of NewWestminster is shutting the doors to community facilities to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and slow the rate of infection.

Services like garbage collection will continue until further notice, but community and recreational facilities will be closed as of March 17 and will remain closed until further notice.

The goal is to help reduce the risk of transmission of coronavirus in the community.

“We have closed to the public all city facilities, with the exception of the fire halls, the police department and city hall – with staff and visitors being screened prior to entering,” said Blair Fryer, the city’s director of communications. “We are introducing protocols now, where we are asking people to refrain from visiting city hall unless it’s for a city service that they need.

ter city hall through a single entrance at the back.There will be screening procedures set up to ensure they don’t enter the building if they are displaying any of the symptoms associated with coronavirus.”

Facilities being closed include Canada Games Pool, Centennial Community Centre,Century House (modified food services will continue to be offered, with further details to follow), Moody Park Arena, Queen’s Park Arena, Queensborough Community Centre, the youth centre, the NewWestminster Public Library (Uptown and Queens borough branches), Anvil Centre (including the New Media Gallery and NewWestminster Museum and Archives), the NewWestminster Animal Shelter and tow yard, and the front counter at the NewWestminster Police Department.

is impact the actual facilities being opened to the public.”

While the work of city hall continues, Fryer said the city will be taking its lead from health-care experts on next steps in terms of protocols and dealing with COVID-19. He said the city is looking at essential service levels and how to accom-

modate that, should it be required.

The city’s registered spring break camps, including Jr. Royale, Sr. Royale, Extreme Challenge, and full-day art camps at Anvil Centre will proceed.

“The city’s spring break programs this week will be proceeding, along with li-

censed child-care programs in city facilities.That said, should anybody wish to get a refund on any city program, those will be made available,” Fryer said.

“Many parents have registered their kids for programs, and it’s challenging just to cancel them in one fell swoop, especially during

spring break. So we have been sensitive to that, but at the same time reassuring parents and program participants we will be adjusting our protocols to make sure we are following the lead of the health-care experts and will be extra diligent about ensuring no children are participating who may be displaying symptoms associated with coronavirus.”

The city is also working on an ability to continue to offer modified food services for those who normally depend on the service at Century House.

“We recognize that could be an issue for some, so we want to make sure we are responding,” Fryer said.

“We will have more information on what a modified food service might look like in the coming days.”

City staff have connected with non-profit organizations and other local stakeholders and are developing actions to address issues and impacts resulting from COVID-19.

New Westminster school board has voted unanimously to cut the district’s continuing education late afternoon and daytime programs.

There will only be a night program at the new high school come September, the board decided at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

The issue came down to space and financial constraints, according to the school district.

Trustee Gurveen Dhaliwal suggested only cutting the daytime program and leaving the late afternoon program, which would cost the district an additional $68,000, she pointed out.

“I think, for me, that’s a good way to sort of assess what the uptake is, and if the afternoon turns out to be more used than the evening, that gives us something to work with,” she said at the meeting.

That money would have to come from somewhere else, district superintendent

Karim Hachlaf said.

“In considering the late afternoon program, there are logistical considerations.

We do feel that there is an opportunity, given it’s after the traditional school day, to accommodate classes within a particular section of the new school. And though we have other programs operating, we feel that, given the size of the school, there could be a shared space for that,” he said. “The additional cost – $68,000 is the difference right now – that would lead to the senior team looking to another place for that savings. Given we’re looking at operational efficiencies and balancing the budget, if the board were to make that decision, we would look at other areas to offset that increased cost.”

The majority of trustees said they did not want to go that route.

“While it’s difficult to make this decision, I feel that leaving it with just the evening program is the route that I would support,” trustee Dee Beattie said.

“I think we need to look

at staff that are not working full-time.That $68,000 could possibly go to increase hours, that $68,000 could be an educational assistant.”

She said she would like to reassess all the programs in February 2021, for the 2021/2022 school year.

Trustees Maya Russell and Danielle Connelly agreed.

“I think I would go with going down to just the evening program, in the hopes that we can really bolster that enrolment and be in a different position in a year,” Russell said.

“It does concern me to recognize $68,000 would have to be found elsewhere and what that could mean for our schools,” Connelly responded.

The president of the New Westminster Teachers’ Union, EricYoung, directed questions to the board regarding logistical concerns such as whether or not there might be childminding options for night school students, whether there were options in Burnaby Continued on page 9

Poll on discrimination shows the abuse women face

The United Nations and our local communities recently observed International Women’s Day. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, a global policy framework introduced to advance gender equality around the world.

A quarter-century later, we must acknowledge many achievements when it comes to specific goals of the Beijing Platform, particularly on poverty reduction and armed conflict. Other areas, such as economy,

power and decision-making, are nowhere near where they should be – even in industrialized nations.

In British Columbia, there are aspects of our daily lives in which women continue to be scrutinized, excluded and harassed on account of their gender.

The polling company Research Co. asked a representative sample of women in B.C. about their experiences over the course of their lives in the province.

Just over a third of women (36%) say they have nev-

er endured discrimination here.This leaves more than one in five (21%) who describe the discrimination they have faced as “significant” or “moderate,” and 37% who have experienced “a small amount” of discrimination.

In Metro Vancouver, 24% of women have experienced a “significant” or “moderate” amount of discrimination. And while half of women in B.C. aged 55 and over (50%) say they have never been discriminated against, the proportion falls

to 34% among those aged 35 to 54 and 21% among those aged 18 to 34.

As the Beijing Platform began to be implemented, North American workplaces went through a transformation.

Human resources departments became busier, but at times devoted more attention to avoiding lawsuits and protecting revenue-producing executives than to ensuring a fair hearing for women who felt wronged.

The survey asked women if they have endured any

one of 12 separate specific kinds of discrimination.

While a majority of women aged 55 and over claim not to have experienced any of them (56%), the proportion drops to 34% among those aged 35 to 54 and just 29% among those aged 18 to 34.

Slightly fewer women in British Columbia were the subject of sexist jokes (20%), were treated unfairly in the workplace (also 20%) or were mocked or ridiculed because of their gender (17%). More than one in 10 (12%) felt they lost a

potential employment opportunity because they are women.

The survey provides a sombre reminder of how much needs to be done to eradicate gender discrimination.

It would have been easy to assume that women aged 18 to 34, whose professional careers have occurred entirely in the 21st century, would benefit from more sensitive workplaces. In reality, some employers still do not fully understand how to speak and act.

Words to keep all of us a little calmer

As the COVID-19 virus tightens its grip over B.C. in the coming weeks, it would be wise to remember some reassuring words from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

“Remember, this is not forever,” she likes to say at her daily media briefings.

“We’re going to get through this.”

The virus’ impact on the social fabric of B.C. will be substantial. Brace yourself not only for poor health outcomes for many, but for overall economic damage as well.

“The next four weeks will likely dwarf anything we’ve seen over the last four weeks,” Health Minister Adrian Dix has told me.

“We have a rapidly evolving situation.”

We have already seen the suspension – temporarily, we hope – of the seasons for both minor and major league sports. However inconvenient and disappointing that development is for many, it will likely be seen over time as a rather small matter compared to many others.

For example, as of this column’s writing, it seems certain that B.C.’s schools will remain closed for an indefinite period when spring break ends.

Think of the impact that will have on parents forced to scramble for child care.

It is not even clear whether the legislature will resume sitting as scheduled next week. Government House Leader Mike Farnworth tells me he is weighing options.

Now, whether the legislature sits or not is likely not

too big a deal for most folks.

However, the potential closures of many other facilities and services will be of larger concern.

Already, cities in the region have closed their rec centers, ice rinks, libraries and pools. Expect other cities and municipalities to follow suit.

Many small businesses will feel the economic pinch and layoffs – again, hopefully only temporary ones – appear to be inevitable.

Travel restrictions will undoubtedly tighten.

However, the biggest fear is that COVID-19 could overwhelm our health care system, particularly when it comes to hospitals. Dr. Henry is cautiously optimistic it will not, but we are just now at the beginning of the outbreak.

The “numbers” in the B.C. government’s influenza pandemic coordination plan are taken from what happened when COVID-19 took over a province in China.

The good news is that about 80% of those who contracted the virus experienced only mild symptoms.

However, the truly frightening statistic is that five per cent of the cases there were considered “critical”, which can require hospitalization.

To put that in a B.C. context, if only a third of our population become ill from COVID-19 (a low estimate compared to many) and that 5% “critical” rate was maintained here, that would capture some 80,000 people. It is going to be a trying month in many ways, but as Dr. Henry says, we’re going to get through this.

Renovators find some bones Renovators made a grisly discovery at a house in the 700 block of Fourth Street in September. Clearing dirt from under the house, they discovered 20 fragments of large bone. Concerned the bones might be human, they contacted police. Fortunately, New Westminster police Const. Karen Clark held a degree in archeology and was able to determine dem bones were bovine and not human. She said they appeared to be 10 to 20 years old and had been cut by a saw.While there had apparently been no human homicide, the mystery remained:What were the cow bones doing on Fourth Street?

This terrible intersection could use a light Editor: One of the worst intersections by far in New West is the one at 6th Avenue and 4th Street.

No matter what time of day it is, or whether or not I’m wearing dark or light clothing, I’ve nearly been hit several times.

Just this morning I counted nine cars that didn’t even slow down.

Since I was standing on the crosswalk, it was obvious I was trying to cross.

It would be nice to have a light at this location because the majority of drivers using this intersection obviously don’t understand what a regular crossing sign means.

Parking fee at this New Westminster garage isn’t what it says it is Editor: Is it just me or is the parking at the New Westminster SkyTrain Station discouraging shoppers from accessing any of the shops, theatre or banks.

Imperial Parking Canada Corporation (Impark) controls the parking and has a base rate of $2 when, in actual fact, it works out to in excess of $3 when purchased for one hour.

I have difficulty paying $3.25 for 10-minute access to a bank machine. The alternative to paying this amount is to run in and risk a ridiculous park-

ing notice of $89.25 or the reduced rate of $78.75 if paid within five days.

Apart from the fact the amounts are visibly odd, how can they justify those sums?

Having spoken to some of the tenants regarding parking, they all question the parking rates and challenge the signage of $2 for one hour when the actual cost is over $3.

When the cost was $2, Safeway and the theatre refunded that amount. That ceased with the inflated rate of $3.25. I realize that this is private property parking, but surely a fairer system can be incorporated that will benefit anyone accessing this complex.

‘Activist’ council should limit tax increase Editor: The news that New Westminster council is considering property tax increases that are more than double the current rate of inflation for the next two years is either fiscally irresponsible or delusional.

This activist council should sharpen their pencils and limit increases to a more acceptable level.

Certainly supporting limited capital budget increases for the city’s aging infrastructure is warranted, but costly programs like the Q2Q shuttle should be scaled back or eliminated.

Reconciliation issues (should be) the domain of the senior levels of government and should not be draining council and staff time and resources.

The City of New Westminster is hoping to support some creative affordable housing projects in the city.

The city has invited nonprofit proponents to submit proposals for innovative affordable rental or ownership housing projects for two sites in the city.The city-owned sites are located at 350 to 362 Fenton St. in Queensborough and 2034 London St. and 2038 Ninth Ave. in Connaught Heights.

The plan would see the city making municipallyowned sites available to a proponent at no charge and covering related expenses, such as development approval costs, building permit fees, legal fees and site servicing.

Mayor Jonathan Cote said the request for proposals is a continuation of the city’s small-lots housing program, which has seen projects developed on Ewen Avenue in Queensborough and Hastings Street in downtown New Westminster.

“Given the success of those two programs and the amazing partnerships we found with non-profits, council actually wanted to take another round of projects given how successful the first round was,” he told the Record. “We identified a couple of pieces of property that the city owned that were in excess to our need and not specifically identified for any purposes in the city, that we felt were appropriate locations for affordable housing.We are now putting it out to the nonprofit community to see if we can get some interesting proposals for what would be small, affordable, local-serving affordable housing projects.”

In 2019, the city celebrated the opening of two affordable housing projects on city-owned land.

Last year, the Community Living Society, Catalyst Community Development Society and the province (through BC Housing) teamed up on a project that a project built at 43 Hastings St. It includes three fully-accessible one-bedroom

units for people with developmental disabilities who are supported by Community Living Society and three three-bedroom affordable rental townhomes.

WINGS (Women in Strength) Gaining Strength partnered with the city on a development in Queensborough that includes five twobedroom affordable rental units for single mothers and their children.

“We are certainly hopeful we are going to get a good response,” Cote said of the current requests for proposals. “The first time we did this, I believe we had more than 15 responses, which was really excellent because it gave us an opportunity to hear some really creative proposals.”

Cote noted there have been some changes since the last time the city issued request for proposals for affordable housing.

“We do know the last time around there wasn’t as much activity with affordable housing projects and the provincial government wasn’t as active at that time,” he said.

Community New West woman helps others during pandemic A local woman started the NewWest Helping Hands Facebook page to connect with her community.

Assistance with pet care, child minding and grocery shopping.Tips on food arrival times at local grocery stores. Information about government or community resources. Emotional support through phone calls, texts or video calls.

These are just some of the ways New Westminster residents are offering to help their fellow citizens cope with the COVID-19 crisis.

Within a few days of being launched on Facebook, more than 800 people had connected with New West Helping Hands.

Diana Radonjic started the New West Helping Hands Facebook page as a way of connecting people who need help to those who are able to assist them.

“We want to inspire the community.We want to reduce panic.We want to remind people to help – help when you can.Worry about yourself, but look around you,” she said. “This isn’t a time for people to fight; it is a time for people to come together.”

Radonjic and her boyfriend own a small New West-based renovation and handyman company, which has a number of elderly clients, some who live alone.

“Just thinking along those lines, and then seeing all these viral videos of people waiting for toilet paper and fighting over supplies – it hurt my heart to see that,” she told the Record. “I started to think; we should be coming together as a community not fighting and be-

ing greedy and thinking only of ourselves. I started to think,What I can do to connect the people that can help to the people who need it? The New West community I find is quite tight-knit already. So I thought, let’s do something for New West.

Let’s see if we can start something to even get the word out and inspire people to remember what’s important – not that they need 700 rolls of toilet paper.”

Launched March 14, Radonjic was overwhelmed at the response to the page “The response has been incredible,” she said. “People are offering time, rides, grocery delivery. Anything you can think of big and small. It’s amazing. I am blown away.”

ed team leaders in various neighborhoods, who will deliver flyers (not everyone is on Facebook) and connect people.

She’s also working to sort the information on the Facebook page so it’s easy for people to access the type of support they need.

“I think it is inspiring people that there is support in the community, even if they are just helping or they

don’t need help,” she said of the outpouring of support. “It’s showing people that it isn’t every man for himself, that there is a community around us that can help.There is tons of inspiring posts.”

The New Westminster Police Department forwarded Radonjic a link about potential coronavirus scams.

“We are doing our best to research and find information from reliable sources to post. I don’t know people that are in this group, I don’t know who they are, I don’t know their backgrounds.We are really just moving forward to trust in people and hope we are all here to do our best.”

Vicky Bull, who has signed up as the Brow of the Hill team lead, is a production coordinator in the film industry.

“I’m on maternity leave,” said Bull, who has a fourmonth-old daughter. “I’m not doing very much. It’s something I can help with.

I like organizing. I can coordinate volunteers, run errands. Luckily I have a very good baby.”

Bull moved to Canada from the United Kingdom three years ago and has lived in New West for most of that time. She’s happy to help out her community.

“I am not in need. I am lucky in the situation I am in. My partner already works from home and I am on mat leave and I am not affected. I see all the people who are affected. I just want to help,” she said. “I want to be part of a community. I really feel that New West is such an amazing communi-

UNFLUSHABLES REMINDER

Flushing these items down the toilet causes problems for our wastewater system and our environment.

These products don’t break down quickly enough in the wastewater system (or at all) and can end up clogging our sewers and your pipes. Even if they say they’re flushable, these products go in the garbage. It costs Metro Vancouver at least $100,000 every year to de-clog regional pump stations, and hundreds of thousands on top of that to replace damaged equipment.

Municipalities also face additional costs to address issues in their sewer systems.

WHAT IF THE LABEL SAYS ‘FLUSHABLE’?

Products that say they’re flushable – like tampons and wipes – may make it down your toilet, but they might not make it through the sewer. There are currently no regulations to specify which products can be labelled “flushable”. Cities around the world are developing standards to more accurately label whether or not products are truly flushable. For now, put them in the trash. The only things that are okay to flush down the toilet are toilet paper, poo and pee.

The City of New Westminster is once again on the hunt for a new director of finance.

Colleen Ponzini, who was named New Westminster’s directorof finance in April 2019, has taken a position of the director of finance for the City of White Rock.

“It was a fluke that I even noticed it,” she said of the job posting.

“It was an opportunity that I saw that was still in line with everything I am doing already, but had a little bit different perspective for me personally. It wasn’t like I was looking or anything. I feel it’s going to be a good fit for me.”

Ponzini’s last day on the job in New Westminster was March 13 and she’s set to begin her new job on April 6. Between the two jobs, Ponzini had planned to go on a bike trip to Texas but that’s been cancelled because of COVID-19.

Ponzini, who had worked in the city’s finance department since 2007, served as

acting director of finance when longtime finance director Gary Holowatiuk retired in early 2018.The city hired an executive search firm and engaged in a comprehensive recruitment and selection process for the position, ultimately selecting Ponzini for the top finance job at city hall.

“She will be missed. She had a lot of experience in the city,” Mayor Jonathan Cote told the Record. “I think even our current budget process, council really wanted to step up the public engagement process and I think she has done an amazing job taking that on and raising the level of public involvement in our budget process. Certainly, we are disappointed to see her leave. She has taken a position with the City of White Rock, which is very close to her home and is looking forward to biking to work. I get that part of quality of life, but certainly we will be disappointed to lose Colleen at the city.”

While council has yet to approve the 2020 to 2024 financial plan, Ponzini said

staff is comfortable the city will be able to meet the provincial deadline of May 15.

In her final days on the job in New Westminster, auditors were also at city hall going over the city’s books.

“The City of White Rock was also good with me in dealing with a transition time that worked both for them and for the city here.

That was nice,” she said.

“They gave me some latitude to let me fulfill all my professional duties here in a way that the group was supported and nobody is left in the lurch.”

Lorraine Lyle has been appointed as the city’s acting director of finance.

“From the processes that I am involved with, we are in really good stead,” Ponzini said. “Lorraine and the team are very competent and know what they are doing.”

While there are a few more steps to take with the budget, Cote said the city is glad Ponzini was able to get it through most of the budget process before she departed.

OK, writers, it’s time to stop procrastinating and get writing.

The Royal City Literary Arts Society’s 2020 Write On! Contest is now open.

The contest welcomes submissions in three categories: non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Non-fiction and fiction entries can be a maximum of 1,500 words, while poetry has a maximum of one page, single-spaced.

Cash prizes of $150, $100 and $75 are awarded for the top three entries in each category, and three honourable mentions are also named.

Winners and honourable mentions will be published in the society’s e-zine, Wordplay atWork.

The contest accepts a maximum of three submissions per person in total (combined in any or all cat-

egories).

Exhibit needs submissions The Arts Council of New Westminster and the New West Hospice Society are joining forces for a new art exhibition.

The Compassionate I: Personal Images of Loss and Healing is a pop-up exhibition that’s planned to take place during the Festival of Loss and Healing on May 2.

A call for submissions is open until Tuesday, March 31 at 4 p.m.

Organizers are seeking photographs that engage the broad themes of loss and healing.

“A whole range of loss affects the human condition.

Loss of loved ones including pets, loss of home, ability, identity and so on,” says the call for submissions.

“With loss comes different modes of healing.There is no correct response to loss,

nor right way to go about healing – it is very individual and personal.”

Photographic images can be black-and-white or colour, captured by digital camera, film camera or phone.They can be of people, places or things, realistic or abstract.

“Images should be an interpretation of loss and healing and captured by a compassionate eye/I,” says the call for submissions.

Photographers can also submit a short synopsis (not mandatory) to enhance the story of the image.

One image per entry is allowed.

School sports suspended In response to the current pandemic that has seen sports across the globe cancelled over the COVID-19 virus, B.C. School Sports (BCSS) announced Monday that the spring season of play has been suspended indefinitely.

Prior to Tuesday’s announcement from the provincial government that shuttered B.C. schools until further notice, BCSS issued a notice to all coaches and athletic directors.

The memorandum, sent to all BCSS members from its board of directors, directed that all activities related to school sports, including training, practices, jamborees, scrimmages, matches and inter- and intra-school sports activities, were to cease.

“We recognize that schools across the province are out on spring break for the next one or two weeks, but note that many train or compete with their school team during spring break. …

All school sports activities, including those noted above, are to remain cancelled until further notice from B.C. School Sports,” the memorandum stated.

“Due to the speed at which things are changing, we will evaluate the situation moving forward, and determine the ability to safely offer a spring season of play at a later date.”

That decision involves all spring sports, including girls soccer, rugby, badminton, track and field, golf, ball hockey, netball, tennis, ultimate and volleyball.

The scheduled BCSS annual general meeting, scheduled for April 18 to 19, has also been suspended.The board is looking at potential dates in June but will wait for guidance from provincial health authorities before proceeding.

The Burnaby-New West spring season began a couple of weeks ago.The senior girls soccer season got off to a bang for both Alpha and Burnaby Central.

New Westminster and Burnaby North also won a pair of games each.

Royals repeat as curling champs

In what may be one of the last national championships celebrated in Canada for the forseeable future, the Douglas College Royals achieved a rare prize.

The New Westminster-based women’s squad successfully repeated as the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s women’s curling champions, finishing the season last week just as other leagues and championships were shut down over the COVID-19 virus.

They defeated the Humber Hawks 10-1 in the final last Sun-

day in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.

By defeating the Hawks, the Kyla MacMillan-skipped team achieved a rare double-double as two-time collegiate victor.

Jumping out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the opening frame, Douglas built up a comfortable 7-1 lead by the fifth end. A threepoint steal in the sixth completed the rout.

Their spot in the final was a result of a 7-4 decision over Red Deer earlier in the day. It was a case of another strong start, as the Royals were in the clear 5-1 after five ends, and matched the Queens down the stretch.

The Royals lineup includes third Sarah Loken, second and vice-skip Patty Wallingham and lead Kylie Karoway.They are coached by Burnaby’s Daniel Wenzek. For MacMillan, Loken and Wallingham, it was a second successful trip to the national tourney.

Douglas, which trains at the Royal City Curling Club, posted a 6-1 record in the round robin, opening with a 5-2 victory over Northern Alberta. Red Deer handed them their first setback, a 9-8 in a nailbiter to start the second day, in a match that went to an extra end.The Royals rebounded with an 8-3 triumph

over the Augustana Vikings.

They’d continue their good fortune by stopping Fanshawe 7-2 and Humber 11-4 on Day 3 of the competition.

A day later, Douglas was put on the defensive when the Sault Cougars lit out to a 6-0 lead after five ends.The Royals composed themselves and rallied, peeling off five points over the eighth and ninth ends to put them within striking distance.They completed the comeback with three in the 10th for a thrilling 9-7 win.

Wrapping up the round-robin, Douglas dropped Concordia 7-5 to advance to the semifinals.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Blackout accept season pause, look to next season

There are no doubt bigger concerns right now than the cancellation of a soccer season.

Members of the New Westminster Blackout all get that – and feel the same unease and concerns for health of their families and friends as everyone else.

But for a brief moment, they had visions of big things. And like a lot of people’s hopes, it’s all changed.

Just like their moniker, there’s been a virtual blackout when it comes to activities as Canadians try to contain and prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus.

The women’s soccer team was revelling in a Metro Women’s Soccer League Div. 3 regular season title, and had trained to meet the rival North Shore Fusion last Sunday in a semifinal.

The Metro circuit, along with every other sports league, pulled the plug as public safety understandably took precedence over a soccer game.

“This is not how we imagined ending our season,” said Blackout head coach, Scott Loewen.

“These players were killing it this year.”

In their final game, played two weeks ago, New West

blanked the North Shore Icicles 8-0. In February, they racked up a couple shutouts – 9-0 over West Coast and 5-0 over city rival New West Hyacks, along with a 3-1 victory over Delta United.

What they did accomplish over a season was an impressive 15-2-1 record – with the lone loss coming in the season opener. Once the calendar turned to cup action, New West turned it up a notch in four straight victories, that saw them outscore the competition 25-3 and post three shutouts.

Netminder Jasmine Kazi has been a major part of

the team’s success, registering nine clean sheets over 18 games. Her hope was to push it right to a championship final.

“I was really hoping for the chance to play for a medal,” she said.

Carly Cody counted 21 goals on the year, including 10 in knockout and cup games.

Teammate Celeste Bain counted 16 goals, and tied Cody with a team-high 11 during the regular season.

When the soccer does resume, the 2020-21 season will see the spoils of their ef-

forts rewarded with promotion to Div. 2, something that the players had their eye on when the season started last September.

“This is the second straight year the Blackout have earned promotion to a higher division for next season,” remarked team manager Wayne McCarthy.

“The MWSL Cup final is a large event with hundreds of people in attendance. With the government and health officials banning events with more than 250 people, the writing was on the wall. It

would have been great if we had the chance to play for the cup but it is completely understandable that the league chose the safety of the players over anything else. I have no doubt the Blackout will want to prove this season wasn’t a one-off when we come back in September.”

Also contributing on the standout season were Madison Catton, Oriana DallaVecchia, Jupdeep Dhillon, Simran Dhillon, Ellery Hardy, Maya Hoonjan, Jordan Liebelt, Xena Loewen, Zoe Loewen, Sarah McCarthy, Naomi Noda and Sierra Watkinson.

WLA in monitoring mode

League cancels all practices and training camp events While the 2020 Western Lacrosse Association season isn’t scheduled to start until May 21, the league’s board of governors are keeping a close eye on signals from public health and government agencies regarding the status of future games.

The WLA released a brief statement this week, saying that all practices have been cancelled.

“We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves, and as more information

becomes available, we will provide further updates, including details about potential rescheduling or postponing games,” the statement read.

The National Lacrosse League joined nearly all other sports leagues in suspending play and practices last Thursday, as public health and governmental officials put an emphasis on quarantines and social distancing, to help stem the spread of the deadly virus.

Hockey rinks quiet over COVID-19 The Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Associaton, following the lead of Hockey Canada, has put the 201920 season on ice due to concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

In an announcement on its website, PCAHA chief operating officer Barry Petrachenko said any remaining games or functions operated by associations under their organization will be cancelled.

“The B.C. Hockey board of directors support the leadership shown by Hockey Canada to suspend all hockey operations in an at-

tempt to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus and will be following the direction to suspend all B.C. Hockey games and events until further notice,” Petranchenko stated.
