The B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch is kicking off the new year with a job fair in New Westminster.

The job fair – being held on Monday, Jan. 6 – is to recruit prospective employees for its B.C. Cannabis Store, which is expected to open in early-summer 2020 at Queensborough Landing shopping centre.The event is an opportunity for prospective employees to speak to representatives from the LDB, which operates B.C. Cannabis Stores, and learn more about the positions available and experience required.

According to a press release from the LDB, B.C. Cannabis Stores is looking for one store manager, two assistant managers, five full-time cannabis consultants, two part-time and up to eight auxiliary cannabis consultants.

The job fair is being held on Monday, Jan. 6 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Queensborough Community Centre, 920 Ewen Ave. While recruiters will be collecting resumes at the event, all prospective candidates must submit their application via the LDB’s online portal at www.bcldb.com/ about/careers to be considered.

Successful candidates will receive extensive training, concentrating on social responsibility practices related to safety and responsible adult use, comprehensive product knowledge and customer service skills. Product knowledge and an understanding of the essential elements related to cannabis products and the industry are appreciated, but not required.

Retail experience is also appreciated.

B.C. Cannabis Store employees are required to undergo an Enhanced Security Screening check, in accordance with the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act.

Depot closure sparks outcry from public The decision to close it has been made by council, but people who use the NewWest recycling depot are still fighting

There may be three Rs when it comes to waste management, but one of those Rs rose to the top of the heap in NewWest in 2019.

The City of NewWestminster’s decision to close the recycling depot was an issue that didn’t diminish as the year progressed. It was a topic that was recycled again and again and again – through letters to the editor, online petitions and comments on social media.

Whether you agreed or disagreed with the city’s decision, it was a topic that folks continue to talk about – and that’s why the NewWestminster recycling depot is the Record’s Story of the Year.

Although city council made the decision to close the depot and to partner with the Tri-Cities and participate in a regional facility

at a closed meeting in February, word didn’t start to spread until May. Many folks immediately began to voice concerns about the decision to close the depot and send recyclers across the Bailey bridge to the new Coquitlam transfer station and recycling depot on United Boulevard.

Citizens soon started expressing concerns about the

plan – and about the fact council made the decision with no real consultation about the plan or a discussion about alternatives.The city’s plan for a new aquatic and community centre facility on the site doesn’t include space for a recycling depot.

As 2019 drew to a close, more than 1,200 people had signed an online petition opposing the plan and urging the city to keep the facility open.

The city’s initial stance was that the move would result in cost savings to city coffers and would provide community members with a one-stop shop where they could recycle most products that can be recycled, something that didn’t sit well with community members who were already more than happy about being able to recycle everything from yard waste to glass to batteries to plastic at the location in NewWestminster.

Mayor Jonathan Cote stands by the city’s decision to partner on a regional facility but admits the city underestimated the passion that a lot of residents have toward the facility.

“I think we missed that passion and love for the existing facility that is out there in the community,” he told the Record in November. “I think we need to own that and be able to respond and engage with the community in that conversation.”

In October, Coun. Chinu Das said the closure of the recycling depot has been the top issue she’s heard about from residents since the October 2018 election.

PHOTO RECORD FILES gressives who spearheaded the online petition at the request of a fellow citizen, said the city may have been able to find another location for a recycling depot in the city if it had consulted with the community. He said the recycling depot is a valued service among many citizens, but it’s also a place where they feel a sense of community.

“There are certain things within our community that bring us together – you can probably name the top 10 of them. And in an odd, quirky little way, that recycling de-

pot is one of them. It’s funny,” he said. “People have an emotional connection to it. … It’s just part of the community, and it’s a way for people to directly feel like they are doing something to help the environment and to do their part to recycle goods that would otherwise go in the dump.”

City officials initially stated the goal was to keep the city’s recycling depot open until the new regional centre opens next year, but that’s not happening.

While the city is poised to close the depot in early

2020, the new regional facility won’t open until the end of the year.

A series of pop-up recycling events are planned starting in April.

As the outcry continued, city officials and supporters of council’s decision stressed that “recycling” should be the last resort for the three Rs and residents should spend more time thinking about reducing and reusing.

Will the closure of the local recycling depot make citizens more aware of the need to reduce and reuse?

Will folks take their recycla-

bles to other places around town, such as London Drugs, that offer recycling?

Will the city’s pop-up recycling events be enough to meet the recycling demand?

Will people even bother to go to the periodic pop-up events or will they have already placed those items in the garbage?Will the amount of goods going into the garbage increase if people can’t be bothered to find new places to recycle around town or make the trek to Coquitlam?

Time will tell.

It’s business as usual for the NewWestminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society’s 2019 tree-chipping event, but plans for future years are yet to be determined.

Each January, the charitable society hosts the fundraiser that includes entertainment, a barbecue and

a Christmas tree chipping event.This year’s event is on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canada Games Pool parking lot, 65 East Sixth Ave. Glen Bailey, president of the NewWestminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society, said the event will once include a barbecue put on by local firefighters, music from

a band at NewWestminster Secondary School, popcorn by G&F Financial and more.

“The Lions Club is going to be there offering hot chocolate and cookies.They are not going to do a clothing drive this year,” he said.

“The Scouts are going to be there doing a bottle drive.”

The NewWestminster Firefighters’ Charitable So-

ciety holds events like a Christmas tree chipping, shred-athon and charity hockey game to raise money to help individuals and families in the community.The society supports a wide variety of community organizations, such as the Union Gospel Mission, the Lower Mainland Purpose Society and NewWestminster Family Place.

“It’s a great way to meet the firefighters and give back to the community,” Bailey said of the tree-chipping event. “All the money that comes in, with the exception of our Burn Fund program and our insurance, all goes back into the community.”

The tree-chipping and shred-athon events are normally held in the Canada

Games Pool parking lot, but that may change next year.

Construction of the city’s new aquatic and community centre, which will replace Canada Games Pool and Centennial Community Centre, is set to begin in 2020.

“We are not sure what is going to happen,” Bailey said. “We are looking into it.”

Mayor makes 40,000-km walking pledge

Mayor Jonathan Cote is taking on the world in the next decade.

Cote is embarking on a walking challenge starting on Jan. 1, 2020.

Unlike most NewYear’s resolutions that are for the year ahead, New Westminster’s mayor is looking a bit further afield.

“I have been playing around with the idea of, for the decade of the ’20s, doing a bit of a walking challenging for myself and challenging myself to walk around the world,” he said.

“Not literally walk around the world, but walk 40,000 kilometres.”

A family, a job and a few oceans make an actual walk around the world a bit of a stretch, so Cote plans to walk around the world – right here at home.

“I guess I am not doing a NewYear’s resolution, I am doing a new decade resolution,” he said. “It’s to essen-

tially walk the equivalent of walking around the world over the next 10 years. I’ve calculated it will take about 11 kilometres a day, or about 14,500 steps, which I think is definitely ambitious.”

While he’s already a frequent walker, Cote said the plan is definitely a “step up” from his current walking program.

“This past year I have averaged about 10,000 steps a day.That’s generally recommended as a really good, healthy target for walking,” he said. “I just kind of thought, what if I challenge myself a little bit more?”

Cote believes his plan to walk “around the world” accomplishes a couple of goals.

“I just turned 40 this past year – there’s definitely personal health goals related to that,” he said.

“But it also aligns with the type of community we are trying to promote – the walkability of our community. I think that is one of the

greatest assets of the City of New Westminster. I thought it might actually be a fun

challenge to have out there in the community and to help the work we are doing

with pedestrian advocacy.

Walking can really lead to a healthier, happier commu-

nity. It’s certainly going to be my personal goal coming up.”

This is what’s next for the speculation tax in B.C.

More changes are in store for housing in B.C. B.C.’s speculation tax will rise from 0.5% to 2% for land owned by foreign owners or satellite families, according to the Ministry of Finance.

In addition, an exemption for vacant land ended this week.

A speculation and vacancy tax year is the same as a calendar year, and tax levied Dec. 31 is due the following July.

The changes are in line

with legislation that created the tax, a levy the government says has been successful in targeting speculators.

“When we introduced the speculation and vacancy tax, our province was at the peak of a real estate crisis, and moderation in the market was long overdue,” Minister of Finance Carole James said.

“Based on the data from the first year, we see the tax is working as it was designed to: capturing speculators, foreign owners and

people who own vacant homes, while exempting more than 99.8% of British Columbians.”

What else can be expected in the tax’s second year?

The ministry said property owners will benefit from a retroactive exemption for Canadian Armed Forces members and spouses while in active service and a retroactive exemption for people who own properties accessible only by water.

A longer phase-out will be provided for temporary

exemptions, and the exemption for rental-restricted stratas will now end Dec. 31, 2021.

Strata condo property owners restricted from renting when the tax became law will continue to qualify for a grandfathering exemption, meaning new owners and owners subject to new rental restrictions do not qualify.

To prevent tax avoidances,Victoria is increasing identification and information required from corpo-

rations, trusts and partnerships, and foreign owners.

Some who thought their privacy was being violated by that information-gathering contested the information being sought.

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner thought otherwise.

“I am satisfied that the property owner’s name, address, date of birth, social insurance number and email address relate to and are necessary for the pro-

gram of administering the tax,” adjudicator Erika Syrotuck said.

So what happens with all of that tax money collected?

James says the province raked in $115 million and that those funds will be used to help fund affordable housing.

Creating affordable housing for low-income citizens seems like a good way to spend tax dollars.

ICBC will dog BC NDP in 2020

The passage into a new year often means little in politics, as many issues and controversies have a staying power that far exceeds a change in the calendar.

As much as any government may like certain things to simply disappear at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, the reality is some things are still there in plain sight well after the last glass of bubbly is consumed.

This brings me to point out some issues that have dogged the BC NDP government.

Here are some examples of issues that will make life difficult for the government in 2020: Ð The ongoing dumpster fire that is ICBC. More than $1 billion in losses were supposed to be eliminated this fiscal year, but for now it looks like ICBC may end up falling $400 million short if not the entire $1 billion if certain court cases against its touted reforms succeed.

Attorney-General David Eby has used the word “catastrophe” to describe what losing those court cases – brought against the corporation’s decision to cap socalled minor injury financial claims – could mean. At the very least, it could tip the provincial budget into a deficit situation. Ð The forestry crisis shows no signs of ending. In fact, the closure or curtailment of dozens of mills and the layoffs of hundreds of forest workers may signal a fundamental and permanent restructuring of the forest industry.The current situation is not the result of the traditional boom-and-bust nature of a natural resource

industry. Instead, the latest round of closures and layoffs has been building for years and is tied to a number of factors, not the least of which is the dwindling lack of fibre supply.The days of large mills churning out milled two-by-fours are ending, and it will take considerable time for those that survive to make the switch to producing different products, such as value-added ones.The political cost to the NDP could be enormous. ÐWill ride hailing ever really take root in B.C.?While many citizens beg for this industry to set up operations, it has run smack into a politically powerful taxi lobby and a government that has never really displayed much interest in it.

I have long maintained that ride hailing – with its mix of a low-paying, parttime non-union work force and an aversion to workplace regulations – is about as far away from the NDP’s political DNA as an industry can get.

The industry’s future is in the hands of the obscure Passenger Transportation Board, an independent government agency that is minimally staffed and now scrambling to deal with a giant political hot potato handed to it by the apparently disinterested NDP government.

Good luck to it.

So there you have three ongoing controversies to usher in the NewYear.Who knows, they may still be alive and kicking another year from now.

Alert neighbour saves family A local family escaped their burning home unharmed thanks to an alert neighbour who spotted flames coming out of the roof.The neighbour called 911 and then went over to warn the family their house was on fire.The residents had had an issue with one of their electrical switches earlier in the day but couldn’t find the problem and so left it until morning. At about 11 p.m., fire broke out in the attic. Because the flames burned through the roof, the fire and smoke vented to the outside, and the residents didn’t smell it, fire officials said. “It pays to have good neighbours,” said fire Captain Dan Coleman.

Landlords shouldn’t play favourites with tenants

Readers sound off on ride-hailing in B.C.

Editor: Is it just me, or do landlords like to play favourites when it comes to tenants? I’ve been renting from a building for a couple of years now and have had so much trouble with the tenant next to me.

According to others, this tenant has been a problem for several years but management routinely does nothing about it.

This tenant is constantly noisy at all hours of the night – sometimes throwing tantrums for seemingly no reason at all, playing loud music, the list goes on and on – and into the wee hours of the morning. Even with audio-recorded proof, management does nothing and accuses those complaining of lying.

Or their other answer is: “If you don’t like it, leave.”

Um, maybe try resolving the problem instead of siding with them when there is ample evidence that proves otherwise.

The almost regular noise emitting from this neighbouring unit has caused me and others to lose sleep, to call in sick to work, and even take days off without pay. It’s really beginning to affect my health. But hey, the rest of us are the problem, right?

I am so sick of tenants who couldn’t care less about their neighbours and think they can behave as atrociously as this and get away with it, and equally as sick of landlords who do nothing and sit by and let it happen.

Gareth Ceegee: Ah yes, the anti-Lyft/Uber propaganda begins – $18 to drive from downtown to Marine? Sure. I waited two and a half hours to get a cab last NYE downtown. I’d have paid 10 times that. The taxi monopoly is a joke.

Jos Beckers: As with everything in life, I’ll let others test drive this for a few years and iron out the wrinkles. No issues getting around town with all the other modes available for last 20 years, so in no rush to jump on bandwagon.

Sicilia Brum: Still way cheaper than a taxi. Also, you can get better service and cleaner vehicles.

The only thing is that the drivers should be considered Lyft employees. But a cheaper and better service like this could help reduce the number of drunk drivers and the number of vehicles on the streets.

Vince Abel Thai: No thank you. I’m never going to use Lyft again. Waited for my ride in Vegas and never showed up. I got charged. Tried to dispute online, didn’t work. Called them and they hired a third party company to deal with all customer complaints and refuse to acknowledge it. I have to deal with my credit card company. Also, I can’t even remove my credit card from the app.

There is no cure. However, a new medical device is being tested that might help restore sight or improve vision for sufferers of the Dry version of AMD. That device is now undergoing a clinical patient trial in the Coquitlam area.

Treatments with the device are noninvasive, and do not include any drugs.

The goal of this clinical trial is to assess the safety and evaluate the efficacy of externally applied micro-current electrical stimulation in subjects with vision loss caused by Dry AMD, and to evaluate the ability of the medical device to improve the eyesight of trial participants.

The trial’s protocol has been approved by Health Canada and is being monitored by a local ophthalmologist. Participation is limited, but we ask inquiries to be limited to those with vision between 20/50 and 20/200.

City 2019: THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Development kicks off a new year As we enter 2020, let’s take a look back on the year that was in New West – the good, the bad and some “only in New West” moments.

JANUARY The City of New Westminster gets to work weeding through the applications for cannabis retail shops.

The city received 22 applications for shops in neighbourhoods across the city and agreed to support five stores during the initial rollout of stores.

The New Westminster Recycling Depot expands its offerings to collect “other flexible plastic packaging” such as bubble wrap, candy wrappers and zipper lock pouches.

Downtown residents appeal to Bosa Development and city hall for a reprieve from the pile driving taking place at the Pier West site on the waterfront, where 43and 53-storey highrises will

be built. Bosa apologizes for the noise caused by pile driving and pledges to minimize the issues as much as possible.

New Westminster become the first B.C. city to apply new rental residential tenure zoning to existing rental housing stock – much to the delight of tenants’ advocates and to the disappointment of the development community. In addition to 12 city-owned properties, the bylaw applies to six existing stratified buildings that have operated as rental buildings, but the city fears could be marketed for sale as condos.

FEBRUARY The New Westminster Public Library temporarily closes so it can finish its $5.5-milion renovation. A 10-week closure of the uptown branch begins Feb. 24.

Tenants take to the steps of city hall to praise steps taken by the city to prevent renovictions. A series

of initiatives introduced by the city includes a rental replacement policy to slow the redevelopment of older purpose-built market rental buildings, a rental renovation tax exemption to incentivize the maintenance and protection of existing buildings and new business licensing requirements to prohibit renovictions.

The school district begins serving up a new food program at École Qayqayt Elementary School, Queen Elizabeth Elementary and Queensborough Middle school.The program, which aims to offer healthy meals made on the same day they’re delivered, will be rolled out in all schools between now and early 2020.

New Westminster takes steps to become the first B.C. school district to install coin-free pad and tampon dispensers in all of its schools.

Climate change, housing hit the headlines in spring Continued from page 9 MARCH The New Westminster school district takes the first step toward building a new middle school in Sapperton by buying a .438-acre single-family lot on Fader Street – across from Hume Park Elementary School.

Folk and maypole dancing practices for May Day are no longer being done during school hours and will be done after school.

The school district says it’s becoming increasingly difficult to coordinate dance instruction during the school day.

About 50 New Westminster Secondary School students march out of classes as part of a global student strike demanding action on climate change.The worldwide demonstration was inspired by 16-year-old Swedish student and climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Owners of six buildings covered by new rental residential tenure zoning – without their input or support – are taking the city to court.The owners of the strata properties want the Supreme Court of British Columbia to declare the bylaw approved by council to be illegal and/or void, to impose an order quashing the bylaw and to pay costs of the legal action.

APRIL Work on a new pedestrian overpass gets underway in downtown New Westminster.The overpass, part of Bosa Development’s commitment as part of the Pier West development, will provide another way for people to access Westminster Pier Park.The overpass, which will include stairs and an accessible ramp for pedestrians and cyclists, begins at the parkade and lands in the park.While the project was originally expected to take about seven months to complete, it was still incomplete as the year came to an end.

New Westminster city council directs staff to report back on items related to climate action that could be taken by the city, such as updating existing city plans with new targets contained in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.That report deemed it necessary to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees,

rather than two degrees as previously understood Natasha Sing is crowned Miss New Westminster 2019. Sing and the rest of the Hyack Ambassador Leadership Team will represent the city at events across the Pacific Northwest.

New Westminster will do a “deep dive” to get at the truth so it can tackle reconciliation. Council approves a motion by Coun.

Nadine Nakagawa that includes a number of the steps for the city, including making it mandatory for all city staff to attend training on the history and legacy of residential schools, providing mayor and council with training to understand the legacy of residential schools and colonialism, undertaking research to understand which First Nations have a relationship to this land and to better understand the historical actions for the city regarding First Nations.

Robel Abera, 20, is remembered as a “genuine, funny and caring individual” by family and friends.

Abera died after being shot in Hume Park. Nineteenyear-old Sam Jafroudi is charged with second degree murder in connection with Abera’s death.

MAY New Westminster city council votes in favour of removing the Judge Matthew Begbie statue from in front of the provincial courthouse on Carnarvon Street.

The city also pledges to work with the city’s museum and archives, the community and the Tsilhqot’in Nation to find an appropriate place for the statue and to engage in a consultation process to find an appropriate place to tell the history of the Chilcotin War. For

the Tsilhqot’in Nation, Begbie represents a legacy of betrayal, pain and tragedy, as he presided over the trials of five Tsilhqot’in chiefs who were sentenced to hang in 1864. Chief Ahan was tried, convicted and sentence to death in New Westminster a year later – in a spot not far from where the statue stood.

New Westminster is partnering with the Tri-Cities on a new one-stop-shop recycling centre that’s being built on United Boulevard in 2020.The decision, which arises from the redevelopment of the site of the existing depot as part of the new aquatic and community centre, was made at a closed meeting in February but only comes to light in a recent report to council.

The city corrects some inaccuracies in a controversial bylaw adopted by the city earlier in January but stands by the rental-only zoning that imposed residential rental tenure on six strata properties. “See you in court,” says one building owner after council approves amendments to the bylaw.

Cheers to some folks who make New Westminster proud New Westminster is blessed to be a city filled with folks who made this a wonderful place to live.

Here’s a few who crossed our paths in 2019 and make this year’s People Who Make the World a Better Place list: DEE CAVANAGH Dee Cavanagh launched the Chase the Chill New Westminster in 2018 – knitting up a batch of toques and scarves to disperse in Hyack Square and downtown New West. Inspired by

the response, she organized the event again in 2019 – and with the help of 20 volunteers, she distributed 193 scarves, 161 toques and 18 pairs of mittens.

STEPHANIE MUSGROVE Lord Kelvin Elementary School teacher Stephanie Musgrove received a well-deserved Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2019. Along with inspiring children in the classroom on a daily basis, Musgrove’s contributions include setting up the

schools sensory room to help students with sensory needs, creating a Literacy Leaders program for the school, during the annual Terry Fox Run at Lord Kelvin Elementary school.

MILLER LINKE After growing his hair for nearly two years, New West teen Miller Linke lopped off his locks and planned to donate them to an organization that makes wigs for people with cancer. Inspired by a speaker at his school, who talked about going

through chemotherapy and cancer treatment, the teen also collected donations for B.C. Children’s Hospital and BC Cancer.

JENINE GRASS, ANN NEGRIN AND SARAH NEGRIN A trio of New Westminster Secondary School education assistants were recognized for their contributions to education. Kudos to Jenine Grass, Ann Negrin and Sarah Negrin, whose efforts resulted in a 2019 National Inclusive Education Awards.

MONA FORSYTH Mona Forsyth, who was the coordinator of the New Westminster Food Bank for more than 20 years, passed away on Nov. 17 at the age of 95. Forsyth’s dedication to the community earned her the title of Citizen of the Year in 2009.

A period promise The Trailblazer of the Year Award goes to the New Westminster Board of Education for becoming the first school district in B.C.

Koya may be the city’s biggest fan The Booster of theYear award goes to Rish Koya, founder of Royal City Wrestling, who was hard to miss around town in 2019.

Koya (aka Mr. India) was the force behind Rumble Month, which featured weekly variety shows in a ring at centre court at Royal City throughout March, culminating with the Royal City Rumble match on March 30.

In June, Royal City Wrestling teamed up with the Royal Canadian Legion for its Legion Week celebrations, where Koya hosted a patio party and dunk tank (featuring spandex-clad wrestlers), a pie-eating contest and more.

A year where youth thrived

NewWest saw its share of championships and champion-like efforts

Some of the biggest accomplishments in New West sports in 2019 didn’t come at home.

The long list of accomplishments, not so surprisingly, came from all over as the athletes put their best efforts on display near and far.

Leading the charge were some talented teenagers, who raised the bar and broke records en route to making the Record’s Sports Highlights of 2019 list. Let’s begin...

On a foreign stage, before a strong field and a vocal crowd, New West’s Kate Stewart Barnett found the spotlight.

The teen posted the gold-medal winning time in the under-18 girls 2000m steeplechase, edging out teammate Cecilia Howes by nearly 20 seconds.

It was just one part of an incredibly successful season for the thenGrade 11 student of St.Thomas More Collegiate and Royal City Track and Field Club teammate.

Earlier in the season, Stewart Barnett won the B.C. high school heptathlon title with 4,241 points, edging out fellow STM and Royal City track teammate Alicia Bremer.

Stewart Barnett’s victory in the heptathlon included firsts in high jump (1.59m) and the 800m (2:16.82), second in long jump and the 80m hurdles, and a bronze in the 200m event. She would later take the B.C. junior 1500m steeplechase crown.

In August, she continued her forward momentum by topping the Legion national youth track and field

championships in Nova Scotia, topping the u18 2000m steeplechase with a time of 6:51.47.

The Royal City Curling Club’s Hayato Sato rink claimed the province’s first-ever Canada Winter Games men’s curling gold, beating Ontario 7-2 in the final for the title. It capped a 9-1 run through the competition, with the team’s lone loss coming to the favoured Ontario rink, which occurred during the round robin. “It was an incredible feeling,” Sato said of the victory.

“They shook hands and my knees were just trembling there.”

The rink consists of Sato, lead Troy Chong, third Joshua Miki and second Dawson Ballard. Chong and Sato finished with the highest shooting percentage in the tournament. Chong would also receive the Team B.C. Athlete Excellence Award, a bursary based on leadership and community involvement.

New Westminster Secondary’s migration of athletes to post-secondary opportunities continues to flow, with the 2019 crop a bounty of potential.

Leading the way were a pair from different sports – football’s Broxx Comia and swimming’s Octavia Lau. Comia, who accepted a scholastic offer from the University of Manitoba, said his sport has opened so many doors already.

“When we first got here (from the Philippines) I didn’t know what I was going to do,” said Comia. “My friend got me into playing football

and since then I met friends through football. It made me stay in school, because if I didn’t have football, I don’t know where I’d be now.”

“I actually highly disliked (swimming) when I was young. I was like five years old and I just kind of got into it because of my older brother,” recalls Lau, who entered the University of Michigan last September.

“Whatever he was put in, I was put in as well. … I gradually started to get some results and I started falling in love when I was six or seven.”

Betty Brussel wouldn’t let a little number slow her down. Even if that number is 95.The nonagenarian from New West shattered the world record for women 95-to-99 with a record swim in the 50-metre breaststroke at a meet in Chilliwack in March. Brussel carved six seconds off the previous world mark. Although she has only taken up competitive swimming recently, Brussel broke into the Canadian record books earlier with at least four new marks.

A few months later, Brussel busted up a couple of other records at the B.C. Masters provincial championships. She set new world marks in the 200m breast. … Team B.C., led by a strong New West contingent, stepped up and dominated the show with a gold medal win at the national female midget lacrosse championships. New West’s Brenden Bissett tallied the game winner for Canada in their second field hockey match at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. Bissett, who has 120 international games for Canada, helped the team place fourth overall at the international event. … New Westminster’s Jon Cornish got one more moment in the spotlight, celebrating a career full of them.The one-time Calgary Stampeders star running back was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame as part of its 2019 class of honourees. Cornish, who hung up the cleats in 2015, posted three straight 1,000-yard seasons and was one of the top Canadians in the league since being drafted in 2006. … New West native KyleTurris was named to Team Canada for the World Hockey championships.

Turris, a member of the Nashville Predators, was making his third world championship appearance. He’d tally four goals and five assists over 10 games, as Canada finished second to Finland.
