Council working on a plan for ride hailing NewWestminster is onboard with a plan to develop inter-municipal business licence for ride-hailing companies

New Westminster is onboard with a plan to develop an inter-municipal business licence for ride-hailing companies.

The Mayors’ Council recently endorsed TransLink’s plan for a regional approach, which would allow ride-hailing companies to pick up and drop off passengers in all municipalities and would include a single fee structure.The region is working toward having an interim inter-municipal licence in place by the end of January.

“I think all of the municipalities are going to be working hard over the next month-and-a-half to really try and come together and create that regional approach,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “I am cautiously optimistic we will be able to iron that out, hopefully, by the end of January.”

Having every individual city doing their own thing isn’t an ideal situation.

On Dec. 12,TransLink voted to expedite plans to develop an inter-municipal business licence for cities in Metro Vancouver.

Cote said a number of municipalities had started to put forward “a bit of a patchwork” of regulations, which raised concerns at the

provincial level that it could inhibit ride-hailing from being introduced.

“The provincial government has made it very clear that they want to see ride hailing come in in the province of British Columbia.There were definitely some signals to the Mayors’ Council that if the Metro Vancouver region couldn’t work collaboratively and work together, and do so in a little bit more timely fashion, that they might be looking at actually taking that responsibility away from cities,” he said. “I think that’s what has motivated the Mayors’ Council and the cities to speed up the work that they were already contemplating about trying to develop a regional approach.”

At its Nov. 25 meeting, New Westminster city council endorsed some guiding principles developed regarding the introduction of ride-hailing.The principles included having staff participate in a regionally coordinated approach to business licensing for ride-hailing companies and developing strategies to mitigate the effects associated with ridehailing.

“New West has really taken the position that we would like to partner with the region’s municipalities about setting up a regional approach to setting up a licensing system for ridehailing,” Cote said. “Having every individual city doing their own thing isn’t an ideal situation and doesn’t allow cities to properly and efficiently be able to regulate that.”

The Passenger Transportation Board recently approved the first ride-hailing company in B.C. Green Coast Ventures, a Tofinobased company, plans to operate as Whistle in smaller resort communities outside the Lower Mainland, including Tofino, Ucluelet, Whistler, Pemberton and Squamish.

When will ride-sharing be available in New West?

“That really depends on the approval from the provincial process. As soon as

that approval has been given in the Metro Vancouver region from the provincial process, those ride-hailing companies will be able to operate in the City of New Westminster,” Cote said.

“Our hope is that early in the new year we are going to be able to create a regional framework that, whoever is operating in the city, will then have to be part of it.There will be nothing that will stop, on Day 1, the ridehailing company from being able to operate in the City of New Westminster.”

Coun. Chuck Puchmayr recently expressed con-

cern that ride-hailing could become the “vehicle of choice” for people in a city that has already has a high transit use.

Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said studies are coming out of universities that say ridehailing companies compete with transit and end up putting more vehicles on the road.

“I do think we need to remember we have an environmental lens here, we have a disabled access lens,” he said. “In some cities, the arrival of ride-hailing has been devastating to those kind of social and environ-

mental considerations.”

McEvoy is also concerned about the potential for setting up an “unequal situation” where the taxi industry must meet all kinds of regulations and ride-hailing companies don’t have to do any of that.

“You have never seen Uber say ‘we want the same regulations as taxis have’,” he said. “They never use that language about a level playing field. … They’d much rather have taxis at a disadvantage of existing regulations and argue that they are not a passenger transportation company.”

Two local companies are in the running for Small Business BC Awards.

Small Business BC, a resource for entrepreneurs, and Canada Post asked the public to nominate their favourite small businesses across British Columbia for this year’s 17th annual Small Business BC Awards.

More than 611 nominations were submitted in eight cat-

egories, with the 10 businesses in each category who received the most votes having now moved forward as semi-finalists.

“This year’s nominations show an eclectic mixture of businesses, and the resourcefulness of the B.C. small business community,” said a news release from Small Business BC. Out of more than 600 nominations, two New Westminster businesses made it into the Top 10 in

their categories.

Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen, a program based at the Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar in Queensborough, is one of the finalists in the Best Community Impact category.

“The Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen, concept was developed in the summer of 2007 when a group of likeminded individuals got together and wanted to help with feeding those in need in Vancouver and do so by

encouraging Sikh youth and organizations to volunteer their time and services,” said the group’s website.

“The practice of langar – the communal kitchen and seva – the selfless service of humanity; philosophies taught by our first Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji many hundreds of years ago. For the Sikh community, this project is not missionary in nature, instead it is an opportunity for us to extend this true Sikh spirit of help-

ing those in need regardless of caste, colour, creed, and economic status.”

Why did the city remove the love locks?

Has the City of New Westminster lost that loving feeling?

Quayside resident Stephen Herman recently contacted the Record with a concern – and we took his question to city hall.

“Amazing to see with all the development projects underway in New Westminster, the engineering department has time and resources available to have two workers remove the “lovers locks” that are attached to the chain link waterside fence at the far end of the waterfront park, near the largely abandoned industrial area, well past the new Bosa development,” he wrote in an email to the Record. “One can only imagine the locks needed to be removed to improve the unobstructed views of the rotting and aging wooden pier underneath the SkyTrain bridge.These lock fences are popular with residents and tourists around the world and are

actually tourist attractions in cities like Frankfurt. Apparently not in New Westminster.”

QUESTION: Why did the City of New Westminster remove the love locks from the chainlink fence along the Fraser River?

Dean Gibson, director of parks and recreation, explains why some locks have been removed.

ANSWER “This issue is a tricky one for the city. Like the arts, the ‘beauty’ of love locks is largely in the eye of the beholder.We recognize the desire for members of the public to tangibly express their affection for a loved one in public spaces and that in recent years, one form of this expression is through ‘love locks.’

That being said, these sorts of trends, if left to evolve organically, can result in unintended damage to city infrastructure, and in extreme circumstances, potential public safety risks. In the case of many urban cities

throughout the world, this situation has escalated to the point where the matter has become at the very least a public annoyance, and at the worst, a public safety issue.

“In New Westminster, we have taken the approach of quiet tolerance for the temporary placement of the locks in a confined area within Westminster Pier Park (the only location that seems to attract any significant attention of love lock lovers. Accordingly, we gradually remove locks over time so as not to allow a significant accumulation that contributes to the challenges facing other cities around the world. I have been advised that in the recent past, this maintenance practice has not been followed, so recently staff have been playing a bit of catch-up to bring things more into balance. All that being said, the public is reminded that that unauthorized placement of items like love locks in city parks is contrary to the city’s parks bylaw.”

Instead of more socks, give the gift of life at Christmas

Crystal Nguyen is among thousands of Canadians who have needed blood for lifesaving care during the holidays.

That’s why she encourages New West residents to support Canada’s lifeline and book and honour their appointments to meet patient needs.

Blood donations between now and Jan. 5 are essential to collect platelets, which are a vital blood component many patients living with cancer or a blood disorder

may need for treatment. But platelets have a short expiry of seven days. Statutory holidays in December impact collection hours, so every blood donation counts during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, patient needs don’t take a holiday.

Nguyen was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011.

She required more than 100 blood transfusions and months of chemotherapy during.

“My care didn’t stop during the holiday season.

Blood donors made a big difference in my recovery.

I’m grateful for every donor who helped me and ask every eligible donor to make that wonderful, lifesaving gift this holiday season,” she said.

BC Liberal vets under pressure While Premier John Horgan says his government needs to “renew” and “refresh” itself, the same can be said of the BC Liberals sitting in opposition.

It can be argued it’s the Liberals who are most urgently in need of a shake-up that injects new life into the party. And if that isn’t done before the next election, the party will likely find itself stuck in opposition for another long four years.

Winning the most seats in the 2017 election yet being unable to form a lasting government was a wrenching experience for the BC Liberals.

The shift out of power was a psychological blow for many, and it has taken time for many of them to recover.

The only real way for the party to renew itself and offer a fresh vision to voters is to inject itself with new blood.

And that means veteran MLAs may be pressured by some in the party to consider stepping aside to allow a younger and more diverse group of candidates to become the new face of the party going forward.

So far, four incumbent BC Liberal MLAs have said they won’t seek re-election.They are: Linda Reid (Richmond South Centre), Steve Thomson (Kelowna-Mission), Linda Larson (Boundary-Similkameen) and Ralph Sultan (West Vancouver-Capilano).

The Kelowna andWest Vancouver seats are considered virtual locks for the BC Liberals to hold in the next election, while the party has to be considered a strong favourite to win the other two

seats as well.

So it is a safe bet that four new faces will be part of the next BC Liberal caucus after the election. But many in the party will tell you that is not enough.

The party’s internal spotlight continues to shine on other long-term MLAs who have accumulated enough political baggage over the years to wear the party and other candidates down come the next campaign.

So there is speculation that 23-year veteran Rich Coleman (Langley East) will be pressured to give up his safe seat and make way for someone new. His record in government, particularly in regards to the gambling file, makes him an easy target for the NDP. It is also unclear whether fellow veterans Shirley Bond (Prince George-Valemount), Mike de Jong (AbbotsordWest) and Mary Polak (Langley) will run again, although I would argue both Bond and de Jong have emerged as solid critics after years as cabinet ministers.

But Bond and de Jong aside, the BC Liberal caucus hasn’t really found its sea legs in opposition.With the exception of rookie MLAs Peter Milobar and Jas Johal, and veterans such as John Rustad and Jane Thornthwaite, no one has really shone.

The party is in urgent need of new talent. Horgan thinks his side needs to press the restart button, but it would seem BC Liberal Leader AndrewWilkinson’s party may require more of a general makeover.

Governments need to keep May Day has evolved their hands off of from tradition to legacy the bodies of women Editor: Marching in the New Westminster Santa

Claus parade to promote our community May Day Association was so much fun.

As a celebration of community – of local schools and school children coming together with resident neighbours, city dignitaries and local organizations – May Day in New Westminster has evolved beyond “tradition” to become a “legacy event.”

As a child heading to May Day with my family, I recall my grandmother and great-grandmother telling me how lucky we were to be part of something so special.

As a young student-participant, my school teachers reaffirmed that sentiment.

As a parent of yet another generation of May Day celebrants, I came full circle to truly understand the unique bond that May Day cemented for all New Westminster citizens – generation after generation.

As an elected school trustee for over a decade, it was an honour and a privilege to support that community life lesson. In my new role with the citizen-based New Westminster May Day Association, I am fully committed to sustaining that legacy for future generations. Editor: Re: So, Sam Oosterhoff, you want to make abortion ‘unthinkable’? Here’s where to start, Record Opinion (In 1989, I was) volunteering with the abortion clinic on Victoria Street in Vancouver. It was a very hard decision to make.

Looking back on this story 30 years later, it was definitely the right one. I am a proud grandmother. I am almost 60 years old. I will forever be on the team. Women should be able to make their own decisions.

I don’t think it is a decision any woman takes lightly.

It was one of the hardest decisions I ever made.

I don’t think the government should ever get involved in a woman’s decision about her body.

I am glad I made the right one for me. The decision is no-one else’s to challenge.

If you ever need a voice on the matter, I would be happy to contribute.

I remember the day I told my dad I was keeping the child. It was three days later I was walking to work on a sunny day and it hit me. I had no money. I lived in a bit of a party house.

Before getting on the bus in Marpole, I walked in to my doctor’s office to get the paperwork started.

he field of law can have a reputation for being impersonal or even intimidating. A Winter Wonderland

Filomena Sorace transforms her home into a winter wonderland each December so she can share some Christmas cheer.

Since moving to Port Royal nine years ago, Sorace has decked the halls – inside and out.

“I love Christmas,” she says. “I love what it brings.

I know it is a hard time for some people. Believe me, I have had my fair share of hard times, too. Life is hard, in general. But it does make you smile.That’s all it is about for me.”

Sorace is thrilled that her decorating efforts make the season brighter for her neighbours and friends

“It grows every year,” she says of her displays. “I just kind of acquire more and more. It just brings so much joy to the neighbourhood that I can’t help but do it.”

While passersby enjoy the festive vibe in Sorace’s yard, those lucky enough to step inside are treated to a home where every room is filled with the holiday spirit – and Santas, snowmen, wreaths, reindeer, garland and trees.

“Every year it just magically continues to grow,” she says. “I think I have reached my capacity on the inside.

I think I’ve got every nook and cranny, so I don’t think I can get more.”

No surface is immune from Christmas décor, as a

skydiving Santa and an upside down tree even hang from Sorace’s ceiling. Her Santa collection ranges from wee Santa figurines to two six-foot tall Santas.

“I have a Santa and a Mrs. Claus that I had shipped here from Australia.They are five feet. I was looking for a big Mrs. Claus – I think there are not enough Mrs. Clauses – and I found her online,” she laughs. “I have a large sixfoot sitting Santa – oh, he is beautiful. I have lots of Santas.”

While it’s a lot of work to decorate her home, Sorace loves being surrounded

by Christmas. Guests enjoy the cozy atmosphere of her home as well.

“I think it’s a nostalgic thing,” she says. “The warmth and happiness it brings to people is amazing.”

Friends from Sorace’s university days come by for a visit each December.

Before their first visit, she warned them she goes all out with her Christmas décor.

“I said, ‘It’s like Christmas exploded in my house,’” she recalls. “No one really grasped the gravity of it.The first time they came over, they were in awe.

They said, ‘It’s like a store.

We don’t know where to look. Everywhere we look, we see something new.’

Then it was a regular routine whether they would come over every Christmas because they wanted to come to my environment and be in my home.”

For Sorace, it’s a labour of love to transform her Queensborough home into the North Pole in New Westminster for the holidays.This year, she hired

two local kids for a couple of days to help her with the decorating, a process that takes two solid weeks to complete.

Whether it’s decorating her house, hosting a gin-

gerbread competition for neighbours or making cookies to share, Sorace enjoys keeping the spirit of Christmas alive.

“We had a challenging thing – our father died

when we were younger, so we didn’t have a lot when we were growing up. Someone asked me once, ‘Is it something you think you missed?’ I don’t know that it’s something I missed – I

think it’s just that childlike feeling you get. I like the joy and happiness, just making you feel like a big kid,” she says. “I just love it. I’m so happy to share it with people.”

Single Family Residential Flat Rate Utility Charges Annual residential flat rate water, sewer and solid waste utility bills will be mailed before the beginning of March 2020.

If you have reached the age of 65 you may qualify for a waiver of 25% of your 2020 single family residential flat rate utilities if you meet all the following requirements.

1. 65 years of age or over, and 2. Living alone (one person only) in the single family residence during the calendar year, and 3. A registered owner of the property, either solely or with others, during the calendar year.

To receive the waiver, an application form must be completed and returned to City Hall before January 31, 2020 (before 5:00 pm).

Celebrating Seniors

Program aims to reduce barriers for seniors The provincial government is taking steps to break down barriers to employment for older workers.

According to the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, older workers can face barriers to employment, including a lack of technical skills and training opportunities, and an unfamiliarity with current hiring practices.

Throughout B.C., training in areas like accounting, transportation, health care and computer skills will prepare learners to work in a range of industries. Employment supports may include counselling, mentoring, transportation, disability supports, wage subsidies and equipment.

The 2018 Labour Market Outlook projected approximately 900,000 job openings throughout B.C. between now and 2028, with 77% of those jobs requiring some level of post-second-

ary education or training.

“British Columbians are living longer, and people over 55 are an important part of the province’s labour force,” said a press release from the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “According to Statistics Canada’s labour force survey results for October 2019, there were 756,900 people 55 and older in B.C. Of these, 589,500 were working, and the unemployment rate (the percentage seeking work) was 3.7%.”

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training recently announced new opportunities to build skills for new careers for British Columbians aged 55 and older.

“Skills training and employment supports for older workers are key ingredients to building a more diverse workforce and accessing the untapped poten-

tial in people, while making sure no one is left behind,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “By opening doors to employment for those who need it most, we’re lifting up communities, so everyone can access good-paying jobs and be part of building the best B.C.” While celebrating the graduation of an Encore Careers program cohort at Douglas College, Mark announced $5 million in annual provincewide funding to provide skills training to 733 people aged 55 and older. Douglas College is one of 17 service providers throughout B.C. offering locally designed programs over two years.

Over two years, Douglas College will receive $814,185 to provide 120 learners with Encore Careers training at locations in Burnaby, Coquitlam

and Maple Ridge.The program provides learners with short-term certificates, digital literacy training and coaching for self-employment or consultancy. Supports can include job placement, Indigenous cultural components, disability sup-

ports, transportation and work gear.

“The Douglas College community includes people of all ages, and we’re pleased to provide programming that supports older British Columbians with improved opportunities for

meaningful and rewarding employment,” Douglas College president Kathy Denton said in a press release.

“Supportive and appropriate learning environments help us to foster lifelong learning in our communities.”

While 87 per cent of seniors in long-term-care facilities, 69 per cent of seniors living at home with support and 37 per cent of all residents over 65 received a publicly funded flu vaccine in 2018, according to Isobel Mackenzie, the immunization rate for the population was much lower, at 15 to 20 per cent.

That mean the risk remains high that influenza could spread to vulnerable seniors, for whom vaccines are sometimes not effective, she said.

“We should be getting that number up, up, up, up,” Mackenzie told the Times Colonist. “It’s not just about your grandmother getting a flu shot. It’s also about you getting a flu shot.”

Vaccine rates also vary by geographic area, Mackenzie said.

While 40 per cent of seniors living in the Island Health region and 49 per cent in the Interior Health Authority area got the flu vaccine in 2018, the number plummets to 26 per cent in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

“That’s quite a difference, so we are going to be taking

a look at that to see if there is some work we should be doing in Vancouver Coastal,” said Mackenzie.

She said figures were drawn only from the publicly funded vaccination programs in 2018.The number of people vaccinated through privately paid programs, such as those delivered at work, was not available but is not believed to be large.

Mackenzie’s annual report measuring performance for seniors’ services in health care, housing, transportation, income supports and personal supports showed those age 65 and older in 2018 numbered 912,725, about 18 per cent of the population, up from 14 per cent in 2008.

But the numbers of those aged 75 to 84, at five per cent of the population, and 85 and up, at two per cent, have remained stable since 2008.

Mackenzie said that means the strains on seniors’ services and health care, predicted as the population ages, have not yet arrived.

“What we are really seeing is the beginning of that move, the demographic shift as the boomer generation gets older,” she said.

“But the cautionary note of the stresses on the healthcare system is that we are not really experiencing yet

the kind of volume increases that will be coming at us in the next 10 to 15 years.”

Some good news in the latest report is the overall good health of B.C. seniors.

For those age 65 and older, 20 per cent are living with chronic or complex health conditions and only six per cent have dementia.

For those age 85 and older, 20 per cent are living with dementia.

Mackenzie said those numbers have remained stable for the past five years, indicating seniors are relatively healthy.

Would you like to be an artist in residence at The Gallery at Queen’s Park in the new year?

The Arts Council of New Westminster is currently accepting applications from both established and emerging artists, living and/or working in New Westminster, for a 2020 artist-in-residence program.

Because it is intended as an artist development program, you do not need to be an established artist; no

previous experience is expected.

The arts council operates the gallery in Centennial Lodge, Queen’s Park, with exhibitions that change monthly. Now it wants to provide artists and local, not-for-profit arts organizations with the chance to use the Lower Studio space in the gallery, for free, in exchange for a weekly public programming event to engage the community.

A call for proposals notes the arts council wants to highlight the diversity of the community, to break down

exclusionary barriers and to provide a platform for marginalized voices, so LGBTQ and non-binary artists, artists of colour, Indigenous artists and disabled artists are strongly encouraged to submit.

Submissions must be made by 4 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2020, and preliminary decisions are expected to be announced by Feb. 28.

D

eath can be seen as mysterious and fearful, even something to avoid thinking about at all. But for Holly Mitton, death is a path in the journey of life – and one that people needn’t walk alone.

Mitton offers support, care, education, and advocacy for a wide spectrum of end-of-life needs in her role as a death doula.

“In some ways it’s very much like a birth doula, who is there to support the mom and the family going through this huge transition of life. There’s a team there – nurses and doctors and midwife and family and friends,” she said. “And the doula works to support the family within that. I do something very similar but at the opposite end of life.” Mitton came to this path almost by accident – though in retrospect she can see that as her interest and connection to this work grew, doors opened to help her along the way.

It began when she spent time with her grandfather during his final days, sitting with him and, later, attending at the funeral home – full of questions, she says, about what would happen to him there. These questions, and her curiosity, grew – and eventually led to a job there.

Later, she completed autopsy training and a degree in forensic science, and worked in that field for many years. But when a close family friend – a young mother with two children – died unexpectedly in a tragic accident, it became incredibly clear to her how valuable this work could be.

Her background in funeral homes allowed her to step in and assist on a level that many others wouldn’t have been able to. Later, when a friend mentioned the term “death doula” – something Mitton had never heard of – it all came together.

Nowadays, Mitton’s work can vary from working one-on-one with individuals with terminal conditions or in the active dying stage, to help advocate for them and organize wishes, to assisting families after a loved one has passed away.

She has found a particular connection to supporting families through perinatal, infant, and child loss.

“This is really one of the places my heart is,” she says. This can include helping families with miscarriages – many of which may go otherwise unmarked though the parents themselves are grieving silently.

Education is also a huge component of her work.

“Many people don’t know what is required when someone passes, or even what their options are,” she said.

For example, she’s increasingly been involved in helping people create “hybrid funerals” in which a funeral home takes care of the legal end of things – paperwork and so on – but the family can have an event at home, even bringing their loved one there as well in accordance with local laws.

Sometimes her work is largely event planning, much like a wedding planner would book venues, chair rentals, organize food and flowers – particularly if a death is very unexpected and arranging details may be overwhelming for the family.

She also offers workshops and has plans for more unique events to help spread education and give people the opportunity to talk about death.

“Sometimes people don’t know how to start that conversation, and if I can give them some tools to feel comfortable to do so, that’s important,” she said.

Community Art used for housing conversation

The Arts Council of New Westminster wants to help change the conversation about public housing through art.

Literary and visual artists are being invited to submit poetry, creative non-fiction and photography for a new exhibition, Changing the Conversation: Reflective Empathy and Public Discourse on Social Housing.

Submissions are open now and will be received up to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020.

A write-up from the arts council notes that public opposition to social housing is often accompanied by stigmatizing stories about

those impacted by poverty and homelessness.

“The goal of this project is to use the arts to have a better public conversation about these issues by seeing more deeply into the world of those without secure housing in New Westminster and the broader Metro Vancouver area,” it says.

The exhibition is seeking works that invite the audience to think more deeply and to develop more empathy for those with lived experience of poverty, homelessness and substance use.

In the last-ever tournament in the grand old gym, the New Westminster Hyacks made it count.

The senior boys basketball team ran the table, winning three times to capture the Bob Gair Classic tourney title in New West Secondary’s Pearson gym.

Head coach Ted Cusick almost couldn’t have asked for a better present – although give-aways are less festive on the court than away from it.

“Turnovers – geez,” Cusick sighed, trying not to laugh. “I went to McDonalds and the guy asked me if I wanted a turnover; I felt like punching him.”

New West wrapped up the three-day series Friday by edging Richmond’s A.R. MacNeill Ravens 73-70, exacting some revenge for a 98-53 slapping two weeks earlier at the Tsumura Invitational.

“Redemption. It was a good tournament for us and by the end of (Friday’s) game the kids were five feet in the air.That one felt really good,” noted the coach of beating the No. 8-ranked team of the 3-A circuit.

Getting big efforts from a trio of starters – captain Kirk Bothwell, guard Caleb Johnson and Grade 11 forward Quentin Leberg – helped push past the Ravens.

Bothwell tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds, Johnson contributed 14 points and 14 boards and Leberg notched 12 points and a team-high 16 rebounds.

In support, Luke Dixon and Udhay Mangat counted eight points each, with Mangat chipping in with 14 boards.

“It was a good win all around,” said Cusick. “We were able to break their press, and that was one part of their game that caught us off guard in (the first meeting).We hadn’t seen a press up to that point, but we worked on it and knew it was coming, and by the third quarter (Friday) they took it off.”

New West led by as much as 10 points, but MacNeill was constantly threatening to go on a run.The strong board game by the Hyacks helped stem a momentum shift over the final frame.

It came on the heels of an 88-80 victory over the 2-A Cambie Crusaders.

In that contest, the Hyacks held a large lead but almost allowed the Crusaders back into the game after three starters – Bradie Traverse, Bothwell and Mangat – fouled out.

Leberg notched 17 points and 10 boards, while Johnson hit for 15 points. Before hitting the bench, Bothwell and Mangat each scored 12 points, while Traverse added 10 in support, along with five assists.

In fact, all three wins highlighted New West’s depth and growing chemistry, noted Cusick.

“That’s what I like about this team; everyone can play and they’re a good bunch of kids. ...We’ve got guys who don’t start who are pushing for more playing time.”

Hockey, lacrosse dump old divisional names Changing to age-related divisional monikers addresses accessibility, inclusivity issues

Both the Canadian Lacrosse Association and Canada Hockey are changing age division names to meet modern standards and more inclusive classifications.

Say goodbye to peewee, midget and juvenile delegations, and welcome the universal age-under division titles.

The Canadian Lacrosse Association voted last month to do away with the old division name chances in the box lacrosse, five months after the organization introduced the age groups in the field lacrosse

game for the present season.

Beginning in 2020, box lacrosse organizations will see players organized in age group divisions of 16-under, 14u etc.

“These new division names better reflect the age categories in lacrosse,” said Shawn Williams, president of the CLA. “Allan Redford, president of Little People of Canada, reached out to the (CLA) just under a year ago about this movement in sports. Since then, (we’ve) taken active steps to address this, and all name changes to the age categories will be in place

for next season.

“As an organization, we believe that sports, and the language used in them, should be inclusive and respectful.”

“This is a win-win-win. A win for the sport, the fans and all Canadians,” said Redford, whose organization had long requested the elimination of such terms as ‘midget’ from sports groups. “The ease with which this was embraced and adopted across all Canadian sporting organizations is a testament to Canada’s core desire for inclusion, dignity and respect.”

Hockey Canada, at their recent Winter Congress in Montreal, also approved a regulation change to revise the naming of the age divisions used in minor hockey across Canada.

Following the recommendations of a task team, the age divisions will become U7, U9, U11 through to U21, impacting all minor and female hockey programs under the Hockey Canada umbrella.The change was initiated by Hockey Canada and its 13 provincial and territorial members and will be implemented nationally with their

input and support for the 2020/21 season.

“We believe everyone should feel welcome in the game, and in our ongoing effort to make hockey more inclusive, the members at the Hockey Canada annual meeting determined that the names of our age divisions will change,” said Michael Brind’Amour, chair of the Hockey Canada board of directors. “Following a comprehensive review, we believe this change will simplify the system for families who may be new to the game.”

House fills New West rinks

Tourney sees return of rep teams after a year absence There will be plenty of hockey action right here at home this holiday week, as the annual Herb House Memorial Hockey tournament hits the New West ice.

The tourney, which celebrates the memory of House, who founded New West minor hockey in 1937, features five peewee A teams, and a midget tourney of 10 C division teams.

After a year’s absence, the long-running tourney is

featuring a rep AA division again, with peewee in the spotlight.

New West, Richmond, Langley, Surrey and Seattle will compete for the division title, beginning Friday, 8 a.m., when New West skates against Richmond at Queen’s Park.

The semifinals are slated for both rinks at 8 a.m. (peewee) and 10 a.m. (midget) on Monday, with the championship finals running 4 p.m. (peewee) and 6 p.m. (midget) at Queen’s Park Arena.

Two more Royal clubs advance

The Royal City Curling Club’s teams Joanisse and Dennis are bound for Cranbrook to compete in the B.C. Men’s championships, Jan. 28 to Feb. 2.

They’ll be joining Team Wenzek, which advanced thanks to its finish on the B.C. Curling Tour circuit.

The Joanisse team, an amalgamated squad of Royal City and Golden Ears curlers, includes skip Dean Joanisse, third Andrew Bilesky, second Steve Kopf and lead

The Dennis squad, which counts Salmon Arm as its co-club, features skip Rob Dennis, third Doug Kilborn, second Brad Blackwell and lead Rick Miller.

COLLINS, Frederick Pieter “Fred” Our beloved Fred passed away on December 15, 2019 in North Vancouver, at the age of 57 years, with his family by side.

Fred had Down’s Syndrome and lived an incredibly full and active life. He did not let much stop him from succeeding in whatever he put his mind to, regardless of any challenges he was met with. A vibrant, compassionate, and gentle person with an adventurous spirit, Fred touched the lives of many.

He had a special gift for lighting up a room with smiles and befriending those around him. He was a joy-filled and talented drummer, dancer, artist and loved to socialize.

Fred was active in his community in many ways, including his longstanding service as an Altar Server at St. Stephen’s Catholic Parish. He had several incredible achievements competing with the North Shore Special Olympics, most notably competing in downhill skiing in The Special Olympics World Games in Nagano, Japan in 2005.

He was fondly referred to as “Straight Ahead Fred” within the skiing community .

His friendships extended from his school days at Prince Charles School and Windsor High School, to his time in the Amity Workshop, and later, his nearly 20 years spent in the Cascadia community. In his last few years, he transitioned to Evergreen House, building fond memories there by participating in programs like Bingo, Art and Saturday morning music. He had a vast number of cherished relationships spanning his diverse social and recreational circle.

He was pre-deceased by his loving and dedicated mother, Jeanne (2003), who championed the inclusion of those with disabilities. He is deeply loved and will truly be missed by many, especially by his loving family; Michael (father), Elisabeth (sister), Willi (brother), their families (Greg, Alanna, Christine, and Alex), and aunts, uncles and cousins in England and Holland.

His memory and love will remain an inspiration to all who knew him.

Thank you to all of those who cared and supported Fred so kindly in the Cascadia community and at Evergreen House.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Stephen’s Catholic Parish, 1360 East 24th Street, North Vancouver, B.C., Friday, December 27, 2019 at 2pm.

VANIER, Tina Sharon (KONKIN) March 14, 1948 - December 17, 2019 Surrounded by her family, Tina Sharon Vanier passed away peacefully on December 17th at approximately 1:00 pm. She was born at VGH and she was the only child of Frank and Niki Best. Tina spent most of her life living in Burnaby on the Lower Mainland. In June of 2004, she moved to Powell River with her husband Richard (Dick) Vanier when he retired.

Tina worked for many years as a District Manager for Wilson’s Stationary supervising the operation of approximately 30 retail outlets in BC and Alberta.

She was also one of the first Business Development Managers hired when Staples first moved to Canada. She was very self-motivated and willing to take the initiative to drive business forward. In 2006 Tina was chosen as “Powell River Volunteer of the Year Award” for her fundraising success with the United Way. Tina was exceptionally creative and artistic using those talents in decorating her homes and the homes of close friends. She also made hundreds of personal greeting cards for family and friends.

Many will be surprised to know she was a skilled classical pianist. She loved clothes and had an extensive colourful, matching wardrobe for every occasion. Her family and friends have referred to her as having a kind and gentle heart, amazing zest for life, infectious smile that made everyone feel loved, and a bright light who left all her family and other loved ones feeling blessed to have known her.
