Nearly 850 people have signed a petition urging the city to not trash its recycling depot.

The online petition is asking the city to halt its plans to close the recycling depot and embark on a more thorough consultation with residents.

An April 8 staff report stated city council had agreed at a Feb.

25 closed meeting to participate with the Tri-Cities municipalities and Metro Vancouver in the new Coquitlam transfer station recycling depot.

“There is a tremendous support for the depot in the community,” said Daniel Fontaine, who ran for council with the New West Progressives in 2018, placing seventh in the race for six seats on council.

“I think people are extremely disappointed that A, we didn’t have

a good community dialogue before this decision was made and, secondly, that we haven’t … been as creative and innovative around looking for alternative solutions to this.”

With work on the new aquatic and community centre set to get underway in the new year, the city expects to close the recycling depot in early 2020 and anticipates the Coquitlam transfer station and recycling depot to open in the

last quarter of 2020.

During the intervening months, residents will be able to take some recyclables to other locations and/ or to series of popup events starting next April.

“One also has to note the irony of getting in your car and driving even further, emitting carbon emissions, to go and recycle out in Coquitlam,” Fontaine said of the city’s strong stance on climate action.

“I know it’s not that much farther, but if you’re going in traffic, you are likely going to be stuck idling your vehicle, trying to get across the road and the tracks and all that stuff. It’s not as simple and as easy, so I think there will be more refuse going into the waste stream that is unnecessarily going there when it could be getting recycled.”

City Council underestimated ‘passion’ for depot: mayor Continued from page 1 Fontaine – who started the petition after being contacted by a resident who was concerned about the city’s decision to close the recycling depot – said there are other places to recycle items in town, but they lack the convenience of the recycling depot.

“Council has to understand there is also a convenience factor when you are going to one site and you can bring five things with you, as opposed to driving around the city in your car bringing stuff to different locations,” he said. “That is what people enjoy about this depot – it is very convenient.You can bring paint.

You can bring cardboard, Styrofoam. It goes on and on.You can do one trip versus 10 trips.”

Although residents are upset about the closure of the recycling depot, Fontaine said they’re also concerned about the lack of public engagement before a decision was made.

“There are certain things within our community that bring us together – you can probably name the Top 10 of them. And in an odd, quirky little way, that recycling depot is one of them.

It’s funny,” he said. “People have an emotional connection to it. … It’s just part of the community, and it’s a way for people to directly feel like they are doing something to help the environment and to do their part to recycle goods that would otherwise go in the dump.”

the future aquatic and community centre on the site near Sixth and McBride when the opportunity arose to take part in the regional recycling centre. At the time, he said the city realized that the new aquatic centre was going to have an impact on the recycling

centre.

“Looking back at it, I think the move to partnering with our neighbouring municipalities on a shared facility is still the right decision to make,” he said, “but I certainly would have engaged in this conversation a lot earlier with the commu-

nity and maybe been a bit more proactive in looking at what are some other options to augment the move of the facility there that might have alleviated some of these concerns earlier in this discussion.”

Cote said council and staff underestimated the

passion that a lot of residents have toward the facility. During the past few months, the Record has received dozens of letters to the editor opposing the depot’s closure.

“I think our engineering department felt that the shared location was a very

reasonable response and one that adequately met all of the recycling needs of the community,” he said. “I think we missed that passion and love for the existing facility that is out there in the community. I think we need to own that and be able to respond and engage with the community in that conversation.”

While the partnership for a shared facility with the Tri-Cities is moving ahead, Cote said the city needs to have a conversation with residents about the items they’re most concerned about and find options for providing some additional recycling services in the community.

Fontaine said he doesn’t have any specific locations in mind for a depot but isn’t convinced the city would have to buy land for a new facility.

He believes some good ideas could come out of a consultation process with the community, saying the city has shown an ability to be innovative when it wants to be, such as finding a location for the skate park when it had to be relocated away from Mercer Stadium and finding funding to run the Q to Q ferry and to buy land for a pocket park in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood.

“If this is truly a priority for them and if it is a priority for the community, they’ll make it work and make it happen,” he said.

“I think they just have to put their thinking caps on and make sure that they explore every option within the city.”

Some changes are coming to New Westminster city council meetings starting this month.

Beginning Nov. 25, the city will hold public hearings at 7 p.m., instead of 6 p.m., as has been the case for several years. On evenings where public hearings are scheduled, the regular council meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and adjourn at 7 p.m. for the public hearing, with the regular meeting reconvening once the public hearing has ended.

The new time for public hearings is just one of a

number of changes coming to council meetings.

“I think the reality is, in terms of what is being proposed, this actually won’t have much of an impact on our meetings,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “Our meetings will actually seem similar.”

In July, council approved a motion by Coun. Mary Trentadue directing staff to report back on efficiencies related to council meetings, such as time limits for council members’ comments/ questions and limits on the number of times a councillor might comment. Last month, council considered some staff recommenda-

tions regarding changes to the council procedures bylaw, which is expected to be adopted on Dec. 9.

Once the bylaw is approved, council meetings will adjourn no later than 10:30 p.m., unless a two-thirds majority vote of council agrees to extend it for one hour or less.

Trentadue said some council members often have more than one meeting on council days, with some days starting at 9 a.m.

“I have concerns about our ability to deal with really sensitive and complex issues after being in meetings for up to 10 hours,” she said.

“I am concerned about the

idea of making the best decisions for the community after that length of time in a meeting. ... I think that’s challenging. I think that’s challenging for people, and I don’t think it’s healthy.”

Changes are also coming to the open delegation period, which will be limited to 1.5 hours. Council has the option to vote on extending the time for open delegations.

Trentadue doesn’t like the idea of requiring delegations to sign up to speak a week in advance, as is required in some communities, but she’s also concerned about the idea of delegations going on for an hour-and-a-half.

“My sense of a council meeting is we are here to do the council business, to approve reports and move things along and approve people’s projects. In my mind, that is a very big reason why we have council meetings,” she said. “I think it’s important for the public to have access to council and to be able to communicate to council on specific issues, but I also think the public has other ways of doing that.They can make a phone call, they can email.

There are other ways to reach out to councillors.”

Although staff had recommended reducing the speaking time for delega-

tions to two or four minutes, subject to the decision of the chair and based on the number of speakers present, council voted to maintain the five-minute speaking time.

“It gives the public the same amount of time that councillors are allowed to speak and communicates that their voices are as important as ours,” said Coun.

Nakagawa expressed concern about limiting delegations to two to four minutes, at the decision of the chair, as she fears that has the potential to create inequities.

Signs of a charity scam: • The charity representative pressures you to donate immediately.

• That same individual is vague on the details and won’t give details about the charity’s mission, history, expenses etc.

• They may use a charity name similar to that of a well-known legitimate charity to trick you. For example, Wounded Warrior Foundation was the name of a fake charity, and Wounded Warrior Project is the name of a legitimate veteran’s charity.

• You might get a thank you for a donation you don’t remember making. Scammers will include in that card false contact information in the hopes you will contact them next time you donate.

• The charity representative may offer to send a courier/overnight delivery to collect your donation as quickly as possible.

• They might guarantee sweepstakes winnings to tempt you into making a donation.

While some victims of scams feel embarrassed, we encourage you to call and file a police report.

Official Community Plan Amendment (Removal of Queen’s Park Heritage Conservation Area Related Protection from Seven Properties) Bylaw No. 8156, 2019 WHAT IS THIS BYLAW ABOUT? As part of developing the Queen’s Park Heritage Conservation Area policy 86 houses were placed in a temporary protection category for the purpose of a “Special Limited Study”. City Climate event set for Saturday

An event aims to provide a place where families can come together and build connections with other families who are passionate about climate action.

Babies for Climate Action and Women Transforming Cities are teaming up to explore family-centred climate action in New West.

The session is on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. at New West Family Place, 83 Sixth St.

“The format will be informal, and I suspect kids will be giggling, laughing, squabbling and interrupting,” said Natasha Henderson in an email. “Our agenda may need to change as the energy of the kids ebbs and flows, but having to multi-task and adapt onthe-run is pretty daily business for caregivers. Our goal is to share some information about what the city and school board are doing and

to explore how we can support that work locally.We don’t have all the answers and really want to give participants an opportunity to brainstorm various ways we can take climate action.”

Coun. Nadine Nakagawa and trustee Gurveen Dhaliwal will be attending the event. Children are welcome and encouraged.

“The event is open to anyone, though we are hoping to primarily attract par-

ents or caregivers of small children. Everyone concerned about the planet and the climate crisis is welcome,” Henderson said.

“You can be just learning about climate change, or a seasoned activist, looking to make individual changes at home, or ready to scale up your political action.We are excited to hear the ideas everyone has about how families can be more involved together.”

Councillors Chuck Puchmayr and Jaimie McEvoy expressed concern about the speaking limits on council members and said it was undemocratic to limit de-

bate among council.

“It may be OK for a council like ours where we are all fairly like-minded and we all seem to care and trust each other, but you could have a situation where you could have a council that could take advantage of this and really exclude opposition and really exclude the general public, which would really exclude accountability,” Puchmayr said.

Other changes include: adjourning regular council

meetings that follow public hearings by midnight on the day of the meeting, unless council agrees (by twothirds majority) to extend the meeting; requiring individuals or organizations wanting to make a presentation to council or committees to make a request in writing at least two weeks in advance of the meeting.

B.C. vaping restrictions a step in the right direction Years ago, 20,679 physicians agreed that Lucky Strike cigarettes were less irritating to the throat.

After all, they were toasted.

Dentists backed Viceroys, athletes touted Camels, and future U.S. president Ronald Reagan opted for Chesterfields as generations blackened their lungs, yellowed their teeth and made the air as ugly as their habit.

We hoped that era was over but, much like virulent racism and junk science, it

survived on social media.

While Juul marketed vape juice on brand new platforms, they recycled very old cigarette ads featuring attractive young people who presumably never hack up anything awful in the morning or suffer shortness of breath.

The strategy, which emphasized kid-friendly flavours like cotton candy and pink lemonade and downplayed reports of impurities, seemed to work as Canada’s vaping rate among young

people shot up 74 per cent between 2017 and 2018.

Our province, finally, is acting.

Sin taxes are the first order of government business, as the province intends to introduce legislation later this month to increase the provincial sales tax (PST) rate applied to vaping products from seven to 20 per cent.

The new tax rate will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020 and apply to all vaping devices, the substance or juice

that is used with the vaping device and any vaping part or accessory.

The legislation would also include increasing the tobacco tax rate by two cents: the tax applied would be 29.5 cents per cigarette and 39.5 cents per gram of loose tobacco.

Nicotine gum, patches and similar smoking cessation products would continue to be exempt from the PST. The new regulations will restrict the amount of nico-

tine in vapour pods and liquid to 20mg/ml and will require plain packaging for vapour products that include health warnings.

Public advertising of vapour products will also be restricted in areas where youth spend time, such as bus shelters or community parks.The sale of vapour flavours, other than tobacco flavours, will only be allowed in age-restricted shops.

All public and private schools in B.C. are tobacco

and vape free, while the buffer zone for smoking or vaping near windows, doors or air intakes is six metres.

The province’s announcement follows news of a Michigan teenager who needed a double lung transplant after his lungs were severely damaged from vaping.

The doctor who led the surgery called vaping: “an evil I haven’t faced before.”

But he has.We all have.

Both Green parties face grim future Many political parties are engaged in navel-gazing assessments of their futures these days, but none more than the federal and provincial Green parties.

The departures of the leaders of both parties – Elizabeth May has already stepped down from the federal post while Andrew Weaver is on his way in B.C. – means they must tackle some big internal issues to forge a new identity.

Each party’s “brand” has become strongly identified with their leaders in recent years, so it will be a challenge to overcome the loss of their two most visible assets. It took several years for May and Weaver to establish some kind of credibility in their respective arenas, and their successors will face a stiff challenge trying to repeat their efforts.

The Greens do not have a lot of time, at either level of government.The next elections at both the federal and provincial levels will be critical ones for both parties.

While they have made breakthroughs of sorts by electing some candidates, they amount to tiny breakthroughs.

Winning just three seats at either level simply does not get it done when it comes to arguing that it is in the political big leagues.

The party ran a dismal federal election campaign, marked by a number of gaffes by May and some candidates.

While the party won two seats in B.C., a closer look at the election results showed the party is still a long ways from being regarded as a major player.

The Greens finished fourth (or worse) in 33 of the province’s 42 ridings, and most of those were very distant fourths.

Its only area of perceived strength remains parts of Vancouver Island.

The federal party will soon find itself marginalized in the next minority Parliament.

With just three seats, it does not have the numerical heft to be part of any conversation Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to have with other parties to remain in power.

Provincially, things look a little brighter, but not that much.Weaver’s looming departure will be a major blow and I would not bet on the Greens being able to hang onto his Oak Bay-Gordon Head seat, as both the BC Liberals and the NDP – both of which held that riding for decades – will prioritize winning there in 2021.

While sitting Green MLAs Sonia Furstenau and Adam Olsen have to be considered favoured to hold their seats in 2021, the rest of the political landscape looks fairly bleak for the party.

The Greens finished no better than third in more than 70 of the provinces’ ridings.

So the question has to be asked: is this the high water mark for both the federal and provincial Green parties? Can both parties expand their popularity and reach without the two individuals who have led them to minor electoral success?

Our heritage home is really a Frankenstein house hurt by HCA Editor: Like the Preovolos family, we live in a house about to be designated under the highest protection category in the Queen’s Park Heritage Conservation Area.

Our house is 17-feet wide. The lot is 44-feet wide.

The heritage conservation plan is to maintain the streetscape. The only possible renovation will include making the house double its current width. This will “destroy” and not conserve the heritage home – and only make it impossibly expensive for someone.

And, make it impossible for us to sell our home for anywhere near its assessed value ($1.33 million). Given current real estate offerings, we would be lucky to sell for $800,000 – a loss of half-amillion dollars.

We did not buy into a heritage conservation area 13 years ago. We bought a teardown and made it livable for an empty nest couple.

Like many homes here, ours has rats on a regular basis and wasps are eating the front wall – but we can’t find them. We had to rebuild one wall because wasps had chewed three inches into an almost petrified wood 2-by-4. It’s looking like we may have to rebuild the front wall – bye, bye original siding.

Our house sits on wood 8-by-8 posts that sit on large rocks. The crawlspace is dirt. There is no insulation – we tried that and it encouraged more

rats to pee in the insulation.

At great additional cost, we removed it. We have pest control on speed dial.

The house has one bedroom and a small den.

The footprint is 800 square feet on an almost 6,000-square-foot lot. Because of this, the city’s design consultant has come up with a way for us to add square footage without demolition of the house.

The house is a Frankenstein. Only the front view looks semi-original – it has a brand new front door that I designed and had built and fibreglass windows. The porch posts have been repaired multiple times so even they don’t look fully original.

I could not be at the city council meeting to support the Preovolos family’s application and am now sorry I failed to send a letter to city council.

Our home’s designation is soon to be reviewed by city council. I urge everyone to write to support owners’ rights to assess the best way to secure a healthy, livable, design-appropriate home in the Queen’s Park area – including starting over.

Big, beautiful, irreplaceable homes are absolutely worth saving. A too-tiny, falling-apart home that cannot be saved without basically rebuilding around a not-even-original front facade is illogical and a financial tragedy.

We are now the poor hillbillies whose retirement nest egg has vanished. And, no, we did not buy when prices were low – even if we were to take the advice of the city’s design consultant and renovate to sell we could not get our initial investment back.

The New Westminster Police Department is no longer actively considering using body-worn cameras on its officers, despite fiveyear-old comments from a former chief that the technology was “inevitable.”

The police force isn’t ruling out the use of body cams entirely, a spokesperson said in a statement, but emails obtained by the Record appear to indicate the issue lost momentum years ago.

In September 2014, former-chief const. Dave Jones told the Record the use of body cams was more than likely in New West.

“It is going to come to issues of privacy, retention, storage, disclosure of these items,” Jones said at the time. “I think it’s an inevitable reality and those are the questions and issues that are being fleshed out at this point in time.”

At the time, U.S. and Canadian police forces were eyeing the technology following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in August 2014.

The Record made repeated interview requests with the NWPD on the topic starting in August, but instead received a statement in November saying the force has put the issue on the backburner.

“The New Westminster

Police Department is always looking at ways to leverage technology to improve its service delivery.Video technology, including the use of body worn and in-vehicle camera systems can certainly be an enhancement to current evidence-gathering techniques,” said spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Scott in an email.

“At this time, the New Westminster Police Department is not actively considering the deployment of body worn cameras, however it is certainly a technology that we would consider in the future should a need be identified.”

Scott cited concerns around privacy, resourcing and budgeting that “factor into the decision to deploy them.”

Emails obtained through a freedom-of-information request appear to indicate the interest in body cams was short lived in New West.

The Record’s FOI request sought documents as far back as September 2014 and returned 29 pages of records. Of those 29 pages, 21 were dated between October 2014 and March 2015.

In those six months, the emails include information about body cameras, including articles on the limitations of the technology and others on provincial initiatives. One set of emails also references a study the NWPD took part in that, among other things, considered officers’ apprehensions

about body cameras.

It also includes emails about events, like union meetings, that included discussions on body cams.

But from there, the records drop off for more than three years, until the RCMP surveyed municipal police forces on body cameras in June 2018.

Little internal discussion on the use of body cameras follows, however, and the matter appears to have lost any momentum it gained in 2014 and into 2015. More recent emails reference provincial committees and a letter from the province.

Just one email offers any current commentary on the matter. An honours student seeking to do a study involving the NWPD mentions body cameras to Insp.Todd Matsumoto, in reference to a trip the student took to Singapore.

Just a handful of Canadian police forces, including the Calgary Police Service, use body cams.That’s despite studies conducted by the RCMP and Toronto Police Service that recommended the use of body cams in their jurisdictions.

The technology is touted by proponents not only as a way to increase police accountability, but also as a way to improve evidencegathering for police. Civil liberties groups, however, also caution that the matter needs to be handled carefully to not infringe on privacy rights.

The New Westminster Police Department is investigating a shooting at a home the quiet Glenbrook North neighbourhood that ended with one person taken away in an ambulance.

Police were alerted to shots fired at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday at an Osborne Avenue home west of Second Street.The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, and police determined shots had been fired in what looks like a targeted, isolated incident.

“Investigators are speaking with witnesses and other parties who may be involved,” said Sgt. Josh Hooker. “Because we are

still in the early stages of the investigation, detectives are working hard to determine what exactly happened.The New Westminster Police Department will provide further updates when more details are available.”

Neighbours said police populated the area with emergency response teams and K9 units.

“All of these police cars just start showing up, one after another,” said Michelle Falcone, who counted around eight police cars, a fire department emergency response vehicle and around three ambulances. “It was really alarming.”

Falcone said she saw emergency response team officers in heavy gear and brandishing long rifles in

her yard at the corner of Second Street and Ovens Avenue, just a couple hundred metres from the incident. She added that she saw police officers with a dog sniffing around, all the way up to Eighth Avenue and around her home.

“It was really scary. I did ask out the window if everything was OK, and they just said, ‘stay in your home,’ so we don’t know what happened,” Falcone said, adding police were looking east down Ovens Street, as though they were waiting for something. “[It felt like] it’s not safe out here; there’s someone or something lurking around.”

Writers invited to workshop Writers – or those who’d like to be – are invited to a workshop at Anvil Centre in November.

The Royal City Literary Arts Society is hosting the workshop,Writing the Hero/Heroine’s Journey, on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Carol Johnson will lead the workshop, which will look at the common elements in all compelling stories and how to apply those elements to your own writing.

“Our primary focus is character development: how and why does a protagonist choose to move out of her/his comfort zone?” says a write-up about the workshop.

It will look at internal versus external motivations and archetypes versus stereotypes, using that knowledge

to help create well-rounded characters.

“After all, as writers we want our characters to be as real, tangible and complex as the people around us,” says the write-up.

Johnson is described as a “late-in-life writer” who’s now a grandmother and a creative writing graduate from Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

She’s currently working

on a mixed-genre manuscript of short stories and poetry that interweaves her father’s journey with that of his birth mother.

The workshop will take place on the fourth floor at Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St. It costs $15 for members, $25 for non-members.

Festive homes tour returns to New Westminster

The Homes for the Holidays tour is set to add some sparkle to the holiday season in New West.

After a one-year hiatus, the tour is returning to New Westminster. Six houses will be decked out for the holidays as part of this year’s tour, which is on Sunday, Dec. 8 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Homes for the Holidays is a major fundraiser for the Queen’s Park Healthcare Volunteer Society, which raises money to provide services and items that enhance the lives of people in care at Queen’s Park Care Centre.

“You may visit a house by day, but its true spirit is best seen – illuminated by lamplight and Christmas splendour – at night,” said Catherine Hutson, whose home is featured on the tour and who is a former director with the heath-care society.

She said the tour helps provide “niceties of life”

that benefit people in care – “those things that make residents smile,” she said.

Steve and Gail North are once again opening their doors to tourgoers, having taken part in previous heritage and holiday homes tours.With 12.3-foot ceilings, one of the highlights of their holiday home is a 10or 11-foot tall live tree.

“People like to do things at Christmas. People like to do things feel festive, make them think festive,” Gail said. “Some years we do more than others, but obviously for the years we are on the tour, you bring up all the boxes instead of just some of them.You go full bore for folks. It’s a good thing. People start to think and feel the Christmas spirit when they do things like that.We’re all for it.”

Homes on the tour will have a variety of décor styles, including a 1912 house filled with quirky and whimsical items, a Victorian home in the Brow of the Hill, Irving House and a 1937 Cape Cod home that’s

Groups team up for concert It’s one of the most beloved Christmas concerts in the city, and it’s coming back to Massey Theatre.

Winter Harp and the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir are teaming up for their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2:30 p.m.

The concert, Christmas Traditions Around the World, will feature seasonal music from the medieval to the modern as the acclaimed 80-voice choir joins

forces with the Winter Harp ensemble – with harps, flutes, percussion and rare medieval instruments.

“The combination of harps and flutes with this massive choir is spectacular,” said Winter Harp director Lori Pappajohn in a press release. “It’s a highlight of our season to perform with them, and it’s a concert not to be missed.”

You may have already dug out your warm clothes or put winter tires on your car, but as the mercury falls even further; our attention understandably starts to shift towards getting ready for the colder months still ahead.

The good news is that the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from natural gas appliances is extremely low, and you can prevent carbon monoxide from becoming a problem by simply servicing your appliances regularly. Having a carbon monoxide detector in your home is also very important.

But how much thought have you given to getting your home ready for winter?

ASK AN EXPERT Whether it’s furnaces, boilers, water heaters or fireplaces, ensuring your natural gas appliances are in tip-top condition is essential as the seasons change.

The recommended timeframe may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, but safety experts suggest getting your appliances checked at least once a year to ensure everything is operating efficiently.

“Think of natural gas appliances like you do your car,” explains Michelle Petrusevich, Public Safety Manager at FortisBC. “If you don’t take your car to a mechanic on a regular basis it will start having issues and eventually break down. The same is true for your natural gas appliances. Have them inspected by a licensed gas contractor to ensure they run safely and efficiently.”

“Having gas-fuelled appliances like furnaces, boilers, water heaters and fireplaces checked and serviced at least annually is important for safety, but can also have the benefit of reducing costs,” explains Technical Safety BC’s Acting Gas Technical Leader Brian Zinn.

Just like visiting a good mechanic, a licensed gas contractor will check and service your appliances to ensure that everything is in working order and that there are no nasty surprises lurking around the corner.

It’s all about giving you and your family peace of mind, not to mention preventing the inconvenience of your furnace breaking down in the middle of winter.

“Proper maintenance saves homeowners money over time by ensuring equipment is operating efficiently. Meanwhile, preventative maintenance by licensed contractors provides peace of mind.”

You can be a mom and independent When a common word naturally elicits negative connotations, why not change it up with a more cheery alternative?

This seems to be a new trend amongst celebrities, namely those who have come up with more comfortable terms for words like “single” and “divorced.”

First, Gwenyth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s “conscious uncoupling” was introduced back in 2014 – a cute way of saying amicably divorced, which quickly went viral (and is often heard in conversation today).

Now, actor Emma Watson has coined a term of her own that has audiences all abuzz. In a recent interview in British Vogue,Watson proclaims of her relationship status, “I’m very happy being single, I call it ‘self-partnered.’ ” Watson shares her single status in response to

ber a time in my life when “single” seemed like a bad word.

And when I did find myself in a serious relationship, prodding questions from parents and forward comments from friends alluded to there being a hurry to get hitched and have babies, and that only amplified when I hit my mid-20s.

I love that more women today are choosing to live life independently, without pairing with a life partner, but I don’t think the freedom that comes with being “self-partnered” is only attainable when a woman is single.

There seems to be this motherhood misconception that we as women need to prioritize our parenting duties and put our own personal interests aside. Unfortunately, when we do this – when we put everyone else’s needs before our own all the time – we lose our sense of who we are as individuals.

It took me a long time to realize that I could be both

a “mother,” and the “me” I was before I had kids.

Now, I prioritize time for myself, and thanks to a job that forces me to travel by myself, I’m able to maintain my own independence – regardless of the fact that I’m also married and a mother.

I find that the more time I invest in pursuing my own interests and doing things that make me happy independently of my family, the better partner and parent I become.

Like the words single and divorced, the words married and mother can also have certain implications, primarily that if a person is connected to another person, or a parent, they can no longer enjoy independence.

Perhaps we should come up with more cheery terms for those words as well?

Santa Larry’s memory lives on at Royal City Centre.

The mall is once again holding a toy drive in memory of Larry Tamkin (Santa Larry), who was Santa at Royal City Centre and Woodward’s department store for 45 years prior to his death in March 2018.

Last year’s toy drive resulted in an “amazing” response from community members and was a moving experience for Tamkin’s wife Susan (a.k.a. Mrs. Claus).

Royal City Centre is holding a toy drive from the time Santa arrives on Saturday, Nov. 30 until Dec. 22. Like last year, the toys will be dispersed to the pediatric ward at Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster Family Place, the Lower Mainland Purpose Society and St. Barnabas Church.

Until Dec. 22, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the mall on Fridays from 2 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

LOCKETS FIGHT ISOLATION A New Westminster business is aiming to fight isolation – one locket at a time.

Setareh Bateni recently opened One Thing Lockets in River Market. At One Thing Lockets, each piece of jewelry comes with a message inside a handcrafted locket.

“The message is another answer to a simple yet powerful question:What is the one thing you bring to this world? The answer is written on a piece of paper and included in the locket. It creates a moment of connection between you and the person who sent the message,” said a press release from River Market. “Fighting isolation in this way reminds each person of their value.”

Arts & Entertainment Piano quartet at Anvil The second concert in the new Vancouver Chamber Music Society series at Anvil Centre is coming your way this weekend.

ence the audience shares intimately with the performers. Much of the movement is floor work, as the dancers twitch, stretch and gulp air as they reach down into the soil and up towards the light.

Annual Gogos sale a huge success Hundreds of people supported African grandmothers and children at the Royal City Gogos’ annual Artisan Craft sale on the weekend.

Each January, members of the Royal City Gogos start planning for the sale that’s held in New West every November and get busy crafting. Most of the crafts at the sale are made by the Royal City Gogos’ members and supporters, but crafters from other Grandmothers Campaign groups in the region are also invited to contribute.

“This is our eighth annual Artisan Craft sale, and it was our biggest ever,” said Royal City Gogos member Janine Reid in an email. “The weather gods shone on us this weekend and we had 980 people through the doors over three days – that’s 230 more people than last year.There were 75 people in the door in the first 10 minutes of opening on Friday night!”

The Royal City Gogos work in solidarity with grandmothers in Africa, where 14 million children have been orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.

“Many of them are in the care of their grandmothers, who mourn the loss of their own beloved children and begin to parent again with few resources,” Reid said. “The Grandmothers Campaign has raised $35 million in 13 years, and Royal City Gogos have contributed more than $500,000 since

we began in 2008.”

Reid said the Stephen Lewis Foundation gets the money to the people who need it most, as 90 per cent of the money raised goes directly to carefully screened community-based organizations in 15 African countries that have been the hardest hit

by AIDS. Royal City Gogos has 65 members, but new members are always welcome.

“It’s important to know you don’t have to be a crafter or a grandmother to belong,” Reid said.

“For people who can’t meet during the day we have a group that meets in the evening five times per year and they socialize with us, undertake projects that support the group, and help to staff our events.”

In addition to the Artisan Craft sale, the group undertakes a variety of events during the year including a fitness challenge, a 100-kilometre cycle ride and a “wild card” event, which could be a fashion show and tea, a garden tour, or a series of wine tastings in heritage homes.

“We like to mix it up!”

Reid said. “We also have a school fundraising program called The Red Shoelaces where school children can raise funds with us to send orphan children to school in Africa. Children to children — what could be better?”

Connaught Heights’ residents are helping the city to entice pollinators to their neighbourhood.

The City of NewWestminster invited community members to don gardening gloves and to help plant a pollinator garden in a boulevard at London and 22nd streets on Nov. 9.

“We had a total of 25 volunteers that showed up on a rainy morning. It was off and on rain, drizzle and period of dry weather. It was a nice day, actually,” said Nell Gasiewicz, the city’s parks and open space planner. “It was a fun event.”

A mix of different pollinator species were planted in groups of three, but distributed in somewhat randomly, as research suggests that’s what pollinators prefer.

“We are looking at that, and we are going to be seeing how well it does and if it attracts pollinators, which (is what) we are hoping,” Gasiewicz said.

Bees, birds, bats and some insects are among the pollinators who move pollen from male structures of flowers to the female structure of the same plant species.

“Honey bees, as well as native pollinators, are having a rough go lately, so they are losing habitat, they are losing a source of nutrition,” Gasiewicz said. “One of the things that we are trying to do is to find opportunities to implement pollinator gardens through the city as a way to improve our urban ecosystem and the natural environment.”

Earlier this year, the city planted a pollinator gar-

den in Sapperton Park and a meadow in Queen’s Park.

The city is exploring partnerships with groups to implement more pollinator gardens throughout the city.

“With this one, there was a partnership with BC Hydro.We received a grant from BC Hydro Grassroots,” Gasiewicz said. “As well, we had a partnership with a Connaught Heights resident, Bob Petrusa, to implement this. He contrib-

uted some grant funding, as well, that he received. He did have a really big part in initiating and making the pollinator garden happen in Connaught Heights.”

If residents have garden space, Gasiewicz suggests planting flowering plants that will support pollinators.

“It’s something that everyone can participate in and encourage a healthy ecosystem in our city,” she said.

Hyacks’ season ends in a flurry of long runs

Getting into the dome is always a big challenge.

Staying in it is even more so, when the draw gets whittled down to a select few.

The New Westminster Hyacks witnessed the end of their threeyear streak of making it to the B.C. Subway Bowl AAA football semifinals on Saturday, falling 36-7 to the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers at BC Place.

Their quarterfinal match started well, but was over in a nightmarish third quarter.

New West took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter, and led 7-6 at halftime before Tweedsmuir cashed in a pair of kick-off returns, including off the first play of the third quarter.

After the Hyacks’ Deakon Young put up the game’s first touchdown on a 10-yard run, the team’s offence stalled and was unable to override a series of bad luck and poor execution, or handle a predatory Panthers’ attack.

“We started well.We felt good going into halftime at 7-6 and thought we had more to give offensively,” New West coach Farhan Lalji said. “We felt good at where we were at halftime, but I don’t know if I’ve been a part of a second half like that.The third quarter, especially, was just a complete disaster.”

It turned on Haydn Stomperud’s 90-yard kickoff return that gave the Panthers a 13-7 lead, and was followed quickly by a New West turnover on a high snap that eluded quarterback Andros Dancey, that Tweedsmuir recovered at the one-yard line.

The Panthers’ quarterback Key’shaun Dorsey converted it quickly to make it 20-6, and the avalanche had begun.

They would keep the assault going, thanks to another New West miscue which saw a fumble put the ball back in Tweedsmuir hands on the New West 26-yard line. Although Dorsey’s pass would be intercepted by Dancey, now at defensive back, he couldn’t escape the end zone, with the safety mak-

ing it 22-7.

The following kick was just more salt in the wound, as this time Tremel States-Jones dodged the Hyack tacklers and returned it 50 yards for six points.

That was the third quarter, and the game, in a nutshell.

... I don’t know if I’ve been a part of a second half like that.

“For us to, right after (Stomperud’s touchdown), not be able to generate anything (and) then give up another turnover and a score again,” said a frustrated Lalji. “You give up one, you should be able to respond. It’s a one-score game and you should feel good where it’s at.

Problem for us, when we’re down by two scores and the way it happened, with the fumbled snap and the gifted touchdowns, it hit us pretty hard.”

The special teams did most of the damage. New West managed only 135 total offensive yards, while Tweedsmuir gathered a modest 215, including 138 on the ground.

Dancey, who had taken over the starting pivot role earlier in the month, completed four of nine pass attempts for 26 yards, while Greyson Planinsic returned to the lineup after missing the previous game due to injury and gained 73 yards on nine carries.

Young led the team with seven tackles, while Himmat Garcha got his hands on six tackles. Dancey, Austin Galbraith and Leonard Lastrado recorded four tackles apiece.

While both teams entered the post-season with 5-2 records, New West did have a 15-6 loss to Tweedsmuir in the season-opening exhibition game, as something to build on. Instead, the Panthers turned it up a notch.

“Both teams evolved as the season progressed so we knew it wouldn’t be the same game plan or anything like that.They’ve im-

proved and I think we’ve improved, but these games ultimately come down to execution,” the New West coach said. “But kids are unpredictable, right? As much as you put time in and work, act like we’re collegiate coaches with the amount of film we break down and everything, at the end of the day they’re still kids, and sometimes kids are unpredictable.”

Making it tough was seeing a number of Grade 12s who are leaving the field for the final time go on such a sour note. Most had memorable Novembers in the past, as Grade 10s with the 2017 B.C. champions, and last year’s march to the final where they fell to Mount Doug.

Those moving on include Alex Beschea,Taran Birdi,Tyson Black, Guilherne Christ, Mahtab and Himmat Garcha, Pavan Kainth, Payton Myers, Owen Stark, Michael Udoh, Galbraith and Planinsic.

The Douglas College Royals continued their hot run to start the men’s basketball season, racking up back-to-back wins over the Okanagan College Coyotes last week.

KARDELL, Jeysoca T. It is with great sadness that the family of Jeysoca T. Kardell announces her unexpected passing on November 1, 2019 at the age of 71. She is predeceased by her parents Grace and Anthony Humiski and is survived by her brother David Humiski (Maxine), sister Evelyn Hunter, nephew Harrison Hunter and her beloved dog “Molly”.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., November 30, 2019 at Fraser Heights Chapel, 14835 Fraser Hwy., Surrey.

Jeysoca was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was the eldest of three siblings. Together they spent happy times on farms with extended family ,and this led to Jeysoca’s love of horses. Always a gifted artist, she beautifully reflected her love of animals and nature through the years. Jeysoca studied interior design at the University of Manitoba.

Later, she apprenticed in Quebec and mastered an artistic technique known in French as Cire craft.

She was a member of The Burnaby Artists Guild and they regularly showcased her work at the Shadbolt center. She was well known for her wit and wisdom and well loved in her community.

Other community involvement included her beloved ukulele club and her long time walk along the spiritual path of the First Nations.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the We Care Program at Chilliwack Piecemakers Quilting Guild or the Chilliwack Hospice Society.

A Celebration of life will take place at The Heritage Grill from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, November 23rd, 2019 at 447 Columbia Street, New Westminster

The funeral has already taken place at the Danish Luthern Church Granly in Surrey.
