A government cannabis store has been given the green light to open and sell “high-quality” products in Queensborough.

On Monday, council approved a zoning amendment bylaw application that will allow the Liquor Distribution Branch to operate a cannabis retail store at Queensborough Landing shopping centre.

Staff said the proposal is gener-

ally consistent with the city’s cannabis retail policy and meets the city’s goals of seeing a blend of public and private stores.

Kevin Satterfield, the Liquor Distribution Branch’s director of cannabis operations, said the LDB currently operates 197 liquor stores and six non-medical retail cannabis stores across the province, with other cannabis locations approved or close to being approved by municipalities throughout B.C. “The purpose of BC Cannabis

New West students marched for hope strike to the Canada Line.

In a long hallway, the climate strikers waited their turn to board trains bound for city hall.

One self-described “bitter old man” said the strike “drives me crazy,” citing the environmental damage of rare-earth minerals that go into the cellphones owned by many students.

The Expo Line may have been busy, but the Canada Line was packed. Rather than the quiet but excited chatter from the previous train, the student body aboard the Canada Line was a choir of excitement.

A biting wind and a warm sun clashed Friday morning, as the time for action approached. It was 10:45 a.m. outside NewWestminster Secondary, and already a few small enclaves of students had congregated at the entrance to the Massey Theatre.

“Reduce, reuse, revolt,” read a sign carried by one student, held up for a New Westminster Police Department officer to see as he rolled up to the scene on his motorbike.The officer smiled and greeted the boy and his friends warmly.

The atmosphere ahead of the NewWest climate strike was abuzz with quiet murmurs of excitement, a warmth amid an otherwise brisk fall morning.

As the 11th hour approached, the crowd grew stronger.

11 A.M., MASSEY THEATRE A banner, which would lead hundreds of students down the streets of New West, is unfurled for a quick photo shoot. “Striking for…” the banner’s headline reads, with cartoon silhouettes calling out the various causes below: “Indigenous rights.” “Clean water and air.” “Climate equity.” “Renewable energy.” “My future.”

Their message wouldn’t go unheard – a few local politicians participated in the strike.

NewWest-Burnaby’s NDP MP, Peter Julian, said he believes the climate strikes will continue to push climate change in the public dialogue, especially during the current federal election.

Climate change has seen unprecedented consensus as an election issue this year, consistently ranking among the top issues federally.

In part, that’s been driven by an increasingly dire message from the globe’s scientists, including last October’s report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The IPCC determined the world has until 2030 to cut emissions by 45 per cent below 2005 levels and until 2050 to become carbon neutral – or else risk increasing major floods, massive wildfires and devastating droughts.

movement, popularized by Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg, has continued to grow.Thunberg, too, has gained an ever-growing platform.

“How dare you?” the 16-year-old demanded of world leaders in a powerful speech at the U.N. Climate Summit last week.

11:30 A.M., SIXTH STREET Back in NewWest, the movement had seen monumental growth from the 50-odd students striking in March. About 500 students marched down Sixth Street on Friday, closing the typi-

cally busy commercial road and chanting common slogans from the movement.

“Hey! Hey! Trudeau!

TMX has got to go!” went one such chant (sung particularly loudly outside New West-Burnaby Liberal candidateWill Davis’s office), referencing the controversial Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project.

Signs carrying similar slogans, from “no Planet B” to “burn capitalism” to “I am begging you” permeated the crowd as it flowed toward downtown.

“I think it’s great that students were able to organize

and mobilize about something that they’re passionate about,” said school board trustee Gurveen Dhaliwal, while marching with the students, adding that she hasn’t ever seen anything quite like it in NewWest.

All the while, the reserved murmurs have grown to chatter and laughter among excited students. Despite the urgency of their message, there’s an undeniable optimism in the air.

12 P.M., EXPO LINE The march halted outside a downtown SkyTrain station, where an officer greet-

ed two organizers of the march and praised them for their work. Students then flooded the station and boarded trains bound for Vancouver.

“The turnout is a lot bigger than I expected,” said Karter Deedman, one of the organizers of the event in NewWest, on the way to the station platform. “This is great.”

Deedman pushed back against critics who suggested the day was an excuse for students to skip school.

“This is just so much more important to me than a single day of education ever is because this is our future, which could be millions of years to come for our bloodline, whereas a day of school might teach me how to do a tiny bit of precalculus,” Deedman said.

12:40 P.M., WATERFRONT STATION By the time the strike had reachedWaterfront station in downtownVancouver, countless more students boarded train after train at every stop along the way.

A river of students flowed up from the Expo Line platform, filling half the main foyer ofWaterfront.

There, one student with a megaphone led a chant – “What do we want?” “Free public transportation!”

1 P.M., BROADWAY-CITY HALL As the Canada Line train pulled into BroadwayCity Hall from the north, a dense stream of students flowed up from the platform. Looking across the tracks, another train had stopped from the south, generating a similarly steady flow of climate strikers.

Deedman told the Record 20,000 or more students were expected to pack the area aroundVancouver City Hall.

That number would be blown out of the water by the actual turnout – the Vancouver Police Department estimates 100,000 people showed up to Friday’s climate strike, overwhelming the park outside Vancouver City Hall and flooding Cambie Street.

Drums and brass horns sounded from somewhere in the park, a choir sang somewhere else and a band played He’s Got theWhole World In His Hands on the street.

It was no longer one generation’s fight at city hall.

Infants held in parents’ arms were contrasted by seniors who could be grandparents to some of the students present.

Generations blended together in a united call for action on climate change.

Their message was urgent – cut down on greenhouse gas emissions now, or we and our children will face the consequences.

Some might feel despair from the current climate prognosis.

But in the face of such a daunting task ahead, 100,000 students, grandparents, toddlers and everyone in between poured over the Cambie Street Bridge in a statement of hope.

PORT ROYAL OLA SURVEY

We heard a desire from dog owners for an all dog off-leash area to supplement the small dog off-leash area planned for Port Royal Park. While the capital budget for 2019 only allows for the construction of an off-leash area for small dogs, we have put construction on hold while we review opportunities for off-leash locations that may allow for an all dog extension in the future.

We are seeking advice from local residents (both dog owners and those who do not own dogs), groups who use the Port Royal Park, and those who just like to walk or sit and relax in the park and South Dyke Trail. Your feedback will help shape the future direction of this off-leash dog area.

Things to know: • The off-leash area will be fenced.

• Small dogs are defined as dogs weighing less than 25 pounds.

• Dog owners are responsible for determining the suitability of their dog for the small dog off-leash area.

• Decisions regarding a permanent off-leash area for small dogs will be made at the conclusion of the trial period.

Cancelling construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline, building a greener economy and doing nothing are just some of the ways NewWestminster-Burnaby candidates would tackle the climate crisis.

In an effort to spotlight environmental issues, New Westminster Environmental Partners,Tenth to the Fraser and Babies for Climate Action hosted a climate change debate on Oct 2 (after the press deadline for the Record). Organizers said Peter Julian (NDP), Suzanne de Montigny (Green), and Hansen Ginn (People’s Party) had confirmed they would attend, while Conservative MeganVeck declined, saying she would be doorknocking, and LiberalWill Davis said he had another commitment.

The issue of climate change arose at the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce’s all-candidates meeting on Sept. 25.

De Montigny said Canada is heating up twice as fast as anywhere else in the world. She said the Greens wouldn’t build the Trans Mountain pipeline, and would instead invest that $10 to $13 billion, as well as the $3 or $4 billion that goes into gas subsidies, solar farms, wind farms, geothermal energy and tidal energy.

“We take it very, very seriously.We are going to eliminate greenhouse gases by 60 per cent by 2030 and we will have net zero energy by 2050,” she said. “Sorry folks, it’s just way too serious. No one is going to make it. Only we will.”

Julian said climate change is costing the Canadian economy $5 billion a year and that’s estimated to climb to $50 billion in the next couple of decades.

“We are all aware of the impacts of climate change so the idea that the Liberal government has brought forward to ram through the Trans Mountain pipeline makes no sense whatsoever.

It is a boondoggle – $17 bil-

lion and climbing for something that ultimately leads to a net job loss in British Columbia, let alone the threat to our fisheries and our tourism industries,” he said.

“It is, and I say this as a former oil refinery worker, a colossal waste of money.”

Instead of building a pipeline, Julian said the NDP would invest that money in clean energy that would create 300,000 new jobs in the first five years.

Davis said the federal government needs to work with Alberta and the oil industry to grow and develop towards a greener economy and a greener infrastructure

“We are all for that, 100 per cent. Continuing to lead Alberta into diversifying and growing their opportunities is important. But we can’t flip a switch and turn this overnight,” he said.

“The Liberal Party of Canada will continue to support the 50 per cent reduction in taxes for green companies innovating, with a ban on plastics by 2021, with net zero (emissions) by 2050.

And also, investing billions of dollars and continuing to diversify this economy and support our change towards a green economy and a green way of living as soon

as possible.”

Veck said her party’s platform relies on three core principles: pursuing green technology, not taxes; supporting a cleaner and greener natural environment; and taking the climate change fight global by making sure other countries have access to green technology being created in Canada.

According toVeck, Canada has some of the highest environmental standards and the best human rights standards in the world.

“So it doesn’t really make sense for us to be importing oil fromVenezuela, Iran, Nigeria, and other places that don’t have nearly as high standards as us, when we have enough oil to be self-sufficient,” she said.

“So we will be working towards energy independence by 2030.”

Libertarian candidate Neeraj Murarka said 95 per cent of emissions coming into the Earth’s atmosphere are from outside of Canada.

“What I am going to do when I am MP for you is I

am going to remove all protections from corporations for being sued,” he said.

“Do you know why I can’t go into your house and steal something or do something?

It’s because I can be sued.

These corporations cannot be sued.The Libertarian party is going to make it possible for you to punish industry by taking them to court and using common law against them to prevent any sort of environmental damage.”

Hansen Ginn, the People’s Party of Canada candidate, had a different take on climate change than the other candidates.

“The People Party’s standpoint really is that we are not completely convinced it is manmade climate change.We do admit that the climate changes.

That’s just been a constant since the beginning of time.

So, our approach to this is really we won’t do anything,” he said. “We are going to let the provinces determine how they want to tackle climate change.”

The city’s future aquatic and community centre will have more places for bikes to park and fewer spots for vehicles.

On Monday, council approved the issuance of a development variance permit to vary a number of requirements, including parking and long-term bicycle standard, for the future facility at 65 East Sixth Ave. The facility will include 422 on-site vehicle parking spaces (526 are required), 40 electric vehicle stalls (none are currently required), and 90 bicycle parking spots (54 are required).The current zoning requires 18 long-term bicycle parking spots (30 are being proposed) and 36 short-term spots (60 are proposed), but this could change as the site plan is finalized.

John Klippenstein, a member of HUB Cycling NewWestminster, said the group fully supports a vari-

ance that would increase the number of bicycle parking spaces and decrease the number of motor vehicle parking spaces. He said the aquatic and community centre is ideally located on the Seventh Avenue Rotary Crosstown Greenway and is close to the Queen’s Park multi-use path.

“At HUB Cycling, our goal is to get more people cycling more often. One key component to achieving this goal is advocating for the provision of safe and comfortable infrastructure and facilities,” said a letter he read from HUB Cycling. “The design of community facilities such as this should go above and beyond the current standards for cycling and reduce the accommodation of non-sustainable modes of transportation, such as motor vehicles.The property is also well-served by buses and community shuttles, further reducing the need for motor vehicle parking.”

parking makes sense in the long term, as providing a safe and comfortable transportation options will increase the number of people who chose to cycle there.

In terms of building’s height, the variance approved by council will allow the two-storey building to be 16.43 metres (53.9 feet) tall instead of the 9.14 metres (30 feet) currently permitted in the zoning bylaw.

On Monday, council also received a report about the sustainability implementation and certification process related to the aquatic

and community centre.

According to a staff report, the city’s green building policy requires a minimum of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold accreditation through the Canada Green Building Council.The city has also endorsed a key direction for green buildings in the city’s corporate energy and emissions reductions strategy of achieving a zero carbon building standard in all cityowned new buildings with a floor space greater than 500 square metres, where it’s

possible and a significant reduction in greenhouse gases can be achieved.

Steve Kellock, the city’s senior manager of recreation, said there are some challenges achieving net zero emissions with aquatic facilities. He noted there are regulations such as the temperature requirements on the deck for pool staff.

“What we have been able to find through some of the planning for this project and some of the energy modelling work that’s been done is that we can achieve the net zero,” he said.

“We are taking all of the gas-powered heating components out of the plant op-

erations, substituting that with electric.”

Kellock said the city has been working with the Canada Green Building Council to get an exemption permit that would allow the city to make some of the modifications required to have that aquatic space achieve this outcome.

“It is one of the largest facilities and the largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions from a city facility perspective,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “I am really glad to see that we are taking this opportunity to really tackle that one when we are looking at the replacement here.”

Police need to listen when consulting the public

Perhaps the hardest part for anyone group holding “public consultation” or “engagement” is actually listening to what people tell you.

Too often, these consultations are staged as mere window dressing to say that “we consulted the public.”

Case in point, the hearings into the Trans Mountain pipeline project.

There was engagement with the public, but there clearly wasn’t a sincere effort by the National Energy Board to consult with Indig-

enous communities impacted by the project.

The courts sent the project back for reconsideration, but how sincere the latest engagement efforts with Indigenous communities are again being challenged in court.

That’s what happens if your consultation doesn’t involve actually listening to what people are saying about the topic at hand.

The New Westminster Police Department doesn’t appear to have learned this lesson with its recent foray

into public consultation to help form a strategic plan for the coming years.

Several people in New Westminster who took part say our local police department needs to do a better job including marginalized voices.

AminaYasin and Trudi Goels both said they knew people who didn’t come because they felt too uncomfortable attending a police-led event on policing priorities.

Goels said she often invites marginalized wom-

en to attend public engagement events with her in case they feel uncomfortable alone in those environments.

“I got very direct feedback that there was no way that they were going into that space because they didn’t feel safe or comfortable to be heard,” said Goels.

For both Goels andYasin, a major part of the issue was that the event was led by two male police officers, which can be uncomfortable for members of mar-

ginalized communities.

One thing that exemplified that lack of inclusion, Yasin said, is the framing of homelessness as a policing issue.

“If that’s a policing issue, do you really think that they feel welcome? … I wouldn’t think so. And is it really for policing to encroach into work like social work? Police officers are not social workers,”Yasin said.

Police need to understand that their attempts at cuddly social media accounts don’t erase decades of discrimi-

nation. So they need to take far more extensive steps in order to consult with marginalized communities.

Sadly, the reaction from New West police when the Record asked about these criticism was one of defensiveness about the efforts it had taken – instead of saying, “Hey, we hear this criticism and we’re going to take further steps to do better.”

That’s the reaction that comes when you truly are listening.

Singh impressive on campaign trail He came into the federal election campaign with the lowest expectations of any political party leader, but the federal NDP’s Jagmeet Singh has proven to be formidable campaigner.

The question now is if he can translate his good performance into electoral success for his party, which may still find itself in desperate straits despite Singh’s efforts.

I have been around him on several occasions and have been impressed with his ability to not only attract crowds, but hold them in his spell. He was mobbed at the climate action march in Victoria Friday and drew a large crowd to a town hall later that evening.

The next day, his campaign deftly boarded a BC Ferries vessel, where he found a receptive audience for 90 minutes and later drew hundreds to a rally in Surrey.

He seems to be getting a fair amount of attention from young voters who seem particularly drawn to him. It is not quite Singhmania, but his style of campaigning is much closer to Justin Trudeau than anyone else.

Singh may even be rivalling Trudeau when it comes to being the selfie king of the campaign.

He held his own in the only televised debate so far and no doubt has benefitted from Green leader Elizabeth May’s rough start to the campaign. He seized upon May’s promise that she may possibly support a Scheer Conservative government to paint her party

in right-wing hues.

Moreover,Trudeau’s past foibles may have breathed some life into Singh and his party.The polls do not necessarily reflect that – they continue to suggest public opinion has been locked in with little movement since the campaign began – but I think they may be a reason for the crowds he is attracting.

And yet, I still wonder if he is trying to push a very large boulder up a rather steep hill.

This past weekend, he curiously paid a visit to the riding of Vancouver Kingsway, which normally should be considered a lock for the NDP. Riding visits are of strategic importance so his drop-in there may indicate some nervousness.

In Victoria, once considered an NDP stronghold, the Greens seem to be running neck-and-neck with the NDP when it comes to candidate lawn signs on home lawns (as opposed to ones on public property such as boulevards), which are indicative of actual voting intentions.

However, he also visited Surrey-Newton, a riding won by the Liberals in 2015 by a huge margin. Singh told me before the campaign began that he thinks the NDP can pull an upset there.

I am not so sure about that, but I am sure if the NDP suffers an electoral disaster on Oct. 21, the blame shouldn’t automatically be placed on Singh’s shoulders.

NewWest should have input on this project Editor: It’s beyond time to hear from Burnaby, Coquitlam and New Westminster about highrise development near North Road and Lougheed Highway.

There needs to be a meeting of these cities, with a reporter present, so we can better understand what in the world will all this development, and much more of the same to come, do to this area. Lougheed is no longer a highway when it hits the traffic jam at the aforementioned intersection. What better time for city councillors to meet than the recent meeting of the Union of BC Municipalities. I am sure that some even spend our tax dollars on hotel accommodations at the convention — yes, of course, to avoid traffic.

Sadly, I expect nary a word about traffic will be spoken. Developers have it all locked up and all we can do is sit in our cars for a third green light.

No need to idle vehicles Editor: With winter around the corner, it’s timely to remind people that per our anti-idling bylaw, idling for more than three minutes is prohibited on city streets.

Education is needed about the dangers of excessive idling and the programs to minimize idling; many leave vehicles idling to cool them off with air conditioning or warm them up, all the while polluting the air we share and particularly poisoning those who are lowest to the ground

and unable to avoid the exhaust toxins.

If we are serious about protecting the air we breathe and the environment, we need to consider the changes we need to make. Other jurisdictions put us to shame by penalizing excessive idling or minimizing it through traffic design.

Though engine idling is already an offence in the UK and drivers can face fines of up to £80 if caught, drivers are penalized only if they choose to ignore a police officer’s order to turn off their engine.

A further increase in gas prices may encourage car sharing and further reduce idling as would increased use of roundabouts and yield signs reducing the need to stop, idle and accelerate; and increased use of webinars instead of requiring travelling to meetings.

Politicians failing us Editor: When it comes to consumer protection and environmental preservation, all levels of government have miserably failed us all.

Politicians have shamefully acted in favour of the corporate interest instead of the public interest. It is the government’s responsibility to set high standards and regulations to protect consumers and the environment from harm. Leaving everything up to the citizens in the interests of public choice is a pathetic cop-out that has proven to be a failure.

In a news release, school board chair Mark Gifford said the district looks “forward to building on a foundation of transparency with our community” in its work with Ketcham.

Among her achievements in Quesnel, Ketcham helped guide that school district in its strategic planning and in announcing a new $52-million middle school in July 2019.

School trustees support #AllOnBoard

The New Westminster school district is the latest public entity to sign onto a campaign calling for TransLink to make transit free to youths aged 0-18.

The school board voted to endorse the #AllOnBoard campaign with effectively no discussion recently, making it one of a handful of school boards and city halls to endorse the campaign.

Others who have en-

dorsed #AllOnBoard include the City of New West; Vancouver City Hall, school board and parks board; the Richmond school board; the City of Port Moody and the City of Burnaby.

The #AllOnBoard campaign calls for free transit for those aged 0-18 and for the cost of monthly passes to be on a sliding scale based on family income.

More immediately, the campaign calls for an end to

pursuing fare evasion tickets for youths.

Those proposals are all being considered by TransLink’s Mayors’ Council, but none of #AllOnBoard’s suggestions has been implemented.

“Lack of affordable transportation is one of the most significant barriers to social inclusion, school attendance and success and labour market inclusion for lowincome adults and youth,”

reads a motion from trustee Danielle Connelly.

Connelly wrote in her motion that free transit for youths and a sliding scale for monthly passes for adults could help the goal of reducing poverty in the province and increasing access to work and education.

“Many cities and municipalities across Canada and the U.S. and beyond that offer affordability measures,” Connelly’s motion reads.

NewWest schools pay out $789K to executives The New Westminster school district’s spending on executive compensation rose 12 per cent in 2018/19 over the year prior.

Between superintendent Karim Hachlaf, assistant superintendent Maryam Naser, secretary-treasurer Kim Morris and executive director of human resources Robert Weston, the school district spent $789,162 on salary, benefits, pension and vacation payout.

That figure is up from the $702,450 spent on the executive team in 2017/18, according to that year’s executive compensation disclosure.

The increase came from the addition of the executive director of human resources position to the roster last year, adding $190,000 to the executive payroll. But high turnover in the district’s executive offices complicates determining precise changes.

Of the four executive positions, only Hachlaf and Naser worked in the 2017/18 school year, and neither worked that full year. Hachlaf was preceded by interim superintendent Beverley Rundell, who filled in after the resignation of Patrick Duncan, while Naser was preceded by Janet Grant.

How do I keep my child’s teeth healthy around Halloween?

Halloween is just around the corner! For many children, this means a stockpile of easily accessible candy for the upcoming winter months.

Instead, candy consumption should be limited to meal times, where the production of saliva increases. Saliva protects our teeth from the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Whenever possible, kids should also try to avoid eating the really sticky candies, such as toffees and gummies, as these will stick to their teeth the most. Chocolate is a better option, as it washes away from teeth more easily. Lastly, sugar must stay in contact with teeth for a prolonged period of time to allow cavities to form.

Diligent brushing twice daily and flossing nightly before bed, should be sufficient to prevent cavities from forming in your child’s teeth during this fun time of year.

Community Candidates vie for votes at New West meeting Theresa McManus

A time for change in Ottawa and a time for new blood in New West were among the themes emerging at a recent all-candidates meeting in New Westminster-Burnaby.

More than 100 people attended the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce’s all-candidates meeting at the Justice Institute on Sept. 25.

Incumbent NDP MP Peter Julian, who has represented New Westminster in Ottawa since 2004, said he’s helped more than 15,000 families and individuals over the last few years and has a great record of making sure the federal government invests in the riding. He said the NDP’s priorities include creating affordable housing and child care, addressing the climate change emergency and establishing a fair tax system.

“Families in this area and right across the country are struggling. Record debt loads,” he said. “When we talk to Canadians we know that on an average month, half of Canadian families are just $200 away from not being able to pay their bills.”

Julian said the Liberal government has given $14 billion to the banking industry and is spending billions on the Trans Mountain pipeline. He said Canadians need a government that puts those resources to work for regular families, rather than going to lobbyists, overseas tax havens and mega-projects that don’t make sense.

“What we need to do is put those resources to work for you,” he said. “Affordable housing. Pharmacare.

Child care. Ensuring that everyone has access to postsecondary education without a $50,000 or $60,000 debt load. Ensuring those things and putting in place as well, climate action so that we can create the new jobs in a prosperous, clean economy.”

Liberal candidate Will Davis said it’s time that New Westminster-Burnaby puts someone in government in Ottawa. He stands by his party’s record over the past four years in government, saying it’s created 1.1 million new jobs, offered tax cuts to help children, and supported housing and families.

“This world has turned to populism and conservatism to the extreme.We have to be careful with this vote,” he said. “We have seen Doug Ford, for example, get voted in in Ontario.We need to not go down that path. It’s where we can’t afford to go.”

According to Davis, 70 per cent of Canada’s $690-billion debt was created under Conservative governments led by Stephen Harper and Brian Mulroney. He hopes Canadians will continue to support the Liberals, noting their plans for investments in infrastructure and public transit across the country.

Megan Veck said the Conservatives are the best party to lead Canada and have the best policies to help Canadians.

“People have to work for things.They don’t come for free,” he said. “My job here is to protect people’s rights.”

Hansen Ginn, who is the People’s Party of Canada candidate, moved to Burnaby from Calgary in 2017.

He said the election of a provincial NDP government in Alberta is why he made his foray into politics as he was disillusioned with the available options.

“I am going to appeal to you and say this is an election of values.Vote for your values,” he said. “Don’t just do a protest vote – we saw how well that turned out in Alberta.”

Community Get that elf off the shelf already Mommy’s GROUNDED Bianca Bujan

Strolling through a bigname bookstore with my kids, my eyes fall on a display propped up in the centre of the main aisle, with a pyramid of Elf on the Shelf boxes taunting me.

Beside the boxes sit stacks of Christmas attire and accoutrements for the haunting holiday nymph, and as my kids gleefully point out the newest props that they want me to purchase, I can feel my blood boil.

October has only just begun, and I’ve barely made my way through the burdens of the back-to-school season. I’m already haunted by the pressure to procure the perfect Halloween costumes for all three of my kids, so the chilling sight of Christmas cheer leaves me feeling a mix of anxiousness and anger.

The push of pumpkin spice everything before the summer came to a close was irksome enough, but

the sight of Santa, snowflakes, and season’s greetings spewed on store shelves is just plain stressing me out.

And it’s not just the premature promotion of the holidays in stores that I find to be bothersome; the bug has hit the virtual world as well.

The other day I was happily scrolling through my Facebook feed, admiring photos of my friends’ kids and laughing at mindless memes, when it happened.

As my thumb swiped up, a photo of Buddy from the movie Elf, posing in an enthusiastic “I know him!” pose, was shared with accompanying text that read, “Only 12 weeks until Christmas!”

Upon seeing that, I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit. Articles with titles such as “It’s Never Too Early For Christmas Decorations!” have been sneaking up on me spontaneously since June, and to that I say, “Yes, yes it is.”The author of the aforementioned article notes: “Our philosophies on holiday decorating

are ‘the more the merrier’ and ‘the sooner the better,’” highlighting the benefits of starting the celebrations early, such as, “it’ll make your neighbours like you,” “you can show off your DIYs” and “it could make you happier.” To these excuses I say, “Bah, humbug.”

If I hear a neighbour humming Jingle Bells as they walk past my house or see the sight of holiday lights and door-donning wreaths at the start of October, I can guarantee that I won’t like them more as a result.

You may think that I’m

being brash about the early onslaught of the holiday season, but come on, us parents can only handle so much pressure. Let us get through the to-do’s of Halloween and Thanksgiving, and then we’ll settle in and set up for the most celebrated season of the year.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the holiday season, but let’s rein it in and keep the elf off the shelf – at least until my summer tan lines have faded.

Arts & Entertainment Terror by Gaslight opens Vagabond Players’ season The Vagabond Players is opening the season with a production that’s being described as “fabulously sinister.”

The theatre company is staging Tim Kelly’s Terror

by Gaslight, onstage at the Bernie Legge Theatre Oct. 5 to 26.

The play is set in 19thcentury Philadelphia, where Dr. Cyrus Norton, a brilliant but eccentric surgeon, is creating a museum to further his standing as a recognized expert on anatomy and dissection. He needs cadavers, and since those can only be obtained from the public gallows, he is forced to deal with grave robbers and body-snatchers.

But soon, suspicion falls on Dr. Norton and his household, and chills mount as the persistent police detective assigned to the case moves nearer to learning the truth about the increasingly vicious murders that have been engendered by the doctor’s obsession.

A New West woman has launched an eco-friendly online boutique.

Alexandra Vrabec launched the Two Little Sparrows online boutique in July.

“I carry a selection of hand-curated items that are zero-waste and plastic free,” she said in an email to the Record. “My boutique strives for sustainability with reusable and eco-friendly products – for the kitchen, for the bathroom, for you, for wear, etc.”

In addition to selling products like reusable straws, bamboo toothbrushes, beeswax wraps, mesh produce bags and silicone bag and covers,Vrabec also has a blog and provides eco-tips through Two Little Sparrows.

“So much is going on with the world right now when it comes to climate change and zero-waste/plastic-free living,” said Vrabec, an elementary school teacher. “Every small step makes a huge difference and impact.”

The name Two Little Sparrows represents Vrabec and her son Josh. She said Vrabec has a Czech origin and means sparrow.

“Owning my own business has always been a dream and passion of mine and so has the awareness of what we are doing to our Earth and how we need to change our ways so that future generations can live sustainably and ethically,” she said. “We need to realize how much of an impact we have and what we do is affecting everything and everyone around us. We have the power to make an impact on the world, we just need to make the right one.”

DINNER IS SERVED A popular restaurant is now serving up dinner.

In April, Angelina’s Dutch Corner moved into River Market, after serving breakfast and lunch at a nearby location for 17 years and outgrowing that space.

Now settled into its new home, the restaurant is now open for happy hour (3 to 5 p.m.) and dinner.

The restaurant, known for its pannekoek, waffles, pancakes and tasty breakfasts, now offers a dinner service until 11 p.m.The West Coast-inspired menu includes items like burgers, salads, steak, lamb, fish and chips and salmon.

Join in the walk for hospice New West resident Sheliza Dewji-Harris is joining other families to come together and walk in support of those experiencing endof-life and bereavement at this weekend’s River Walk for Hospice.

The 2019 River Walk for Hospice is raising money to support the New West Hospice Society’s bereavement walking group and volunteer groups. Dewji-Harris, a participant of the bereavement walking group, feels the River Walk is a great way to commemorate loved ones who have passed, as well as raise funds for the New West Hospice Society.

“The weekly bereavement walking group, organized by the New West Hospice Society, has provided a safe, respectful, welcoming and open environment to share my thoughts and experiences with other likeminded individuals,” she said in a press release. “At a

time when my support system was lacking and I felt as though I was burdening my friends with my inability to cope, this group taught me that I am not alone on my grief journey.”

Everyone is invited to attend River Walk for Hospice on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the River Market, 810 Quayside Dr. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., with the opening ceremonies and walk beginning at 10 a.m.

Walkers participating in memory of a loved one are invited to visit the memori-

al tent, which will be open between 9:30 a.m. and the end of the walk (except during the opening ceremony). Family, friends and coworkers can leave tributes and paint stones in memory of their loved ones inside the tent.

The New West Hospice Society was founded in 2016.

Terry Fox Run a big success Terry Fox’s legacy lives on in New Westminster – in a big way.

Folks of all ages took part in the 39th annual Terry Fox Run on New Westminster’s waterfront on Sept.

15. Organizer Kathy Jones is thrilled with the response to this year’s event.

“Biggest turnout in the 12 years that I have been run organizer,” she said in an email to the Record.

“We had over 270 people between participants and volunteers and have raised over $22,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.”

The Smile band served up their peppy tunes for the fifth year in a row.The event

also included a prize table, free food and drinks,T-shirt sales and a selfie station with a life-size photo of Fox. Five members of Terry’s Team – Jenna, Cathy, Deb, Barb and Nancy – cut the start ribbon to kick off the event.Terry’s Team is comprised of patients or survivors who embody the progress Fox hoped to see.

Jones said some of the highlights of this year’s Terry Fox run included participation by the Douglas College men’s basketball team for the third consecutive year.

Councillors mark Orange Shirt Day Members of NewWestminster city council were sporting matching attire at Monday’s council meeting.

Council members joined other community members in wearing orange T-shirts on Sept. 30 in support of Orange Shirt Day, which is held to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.

“I know all of my colleagues and many people in the audience and community are wearing orange shirts today.This really is a day to recognize a painful part of our history in Canada and the province of British Columbia, that of residential schools,” Mayor Jonathan Cote said at Monday’s meeting. “I think it’s a regular reminder and an important reminder of the devastation that those schools caused to our Indigenous population.”

Every Orange Shirt Day, Cote uses the day as an opportunity to engage in conversation with his daughters about the impact of residential schools and how it impacted so many communities and so many children.

HOMELESSNESS ACTION WEEK WHAT’S HAPPENING? The New Westminster Homelessness Coalition Society is hosting a variety of events during Homelessness Action Week, which runs from Oct. 12 to 18.

“Homelessness Action Week is an annual weeklong campaign held in over 20 communities in British Columbia, Canada,” said a press release. “The purpose of this week is to draw attention to homeless people’s needs locally and provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness.”

DETAILS, PLEASE: Homelessness Action Week kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 12 with a community walk. This family-friendly event runs from noon to 3 p.m., beginning at the Salvation Army at 325 Sixth St., going to Moody Park and back to the Salvation Army. A free lunch and hot chocolate will be provided.

Betina Wheeler, the society’s projects coordinator, said that when walkers get to Moody Park one of the trees will be yarn bombed, and more pieces will be added to the tree when the group arrives.

“It is all part of our partnership with the arts council and local knitting groups who are knitting and collecting warm items to give out to those in need during HAW,” she said in an email to the Record.

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING? The Union Gospel Mission, located at 658 Clarkson St., will once again be serving a free Thanksgiving lunch on Monday, Oct. 14, with the first sitting at noon and the second sitting at 2 p.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, a free community breakfast at Holy Trinity Cathedral will be followed by the

Coun. Nadine Nakagawa will moderate the panel discussion, which is being held to celebrate World Food Day – a day intended to spread awareness about world hunger and poverty and to inspire change.

“At a time when we are in the midst of both a housing and opioid crisis, looking at homelessness and addiction through a compassionate lens has never been more relevant,” said the press release.

Royals still in the hunt Douglas earns split with league leaders

One day after a difficult loss, the Douglas College men’s soccer team took to the same pitch with a plan.

Spurred on by a big performance from goalkeeper Felipe Domingos, the Royals blanked the Vancouver Island Mariners 2-0 in Nanaimo on Sunday, getting some sweet revenge after a 1-0 setback just 24 hours earlier.

It’s the kind of bounce-back effort Douglas College has shown since the start of the PacWest League kicked off a month ago.While they sit in third spot with a 3-4-1 record and just four games remaining, all but one of their losses has been by a single goal.

On their first day of a twogame tour of Nanaimo, the Royals were even with the Mariners until the 80th minute, when Westlee Bischoff gave the home team the lead.

In a contest where Douglas only had a single corner kick, compared to Vancouver Island’s 12, the home team generated twice as many shots on net.

Douglas netminder Jacob McNall made 10 saves. At the other end, Kevin Picard picked up the win by stopping five shots.

The Royals returned the favour on Sunday, this time taking the lead in the 42nd minute on Abdul Ali’s second tally of the season.

The New West-based team was in protect mode for much of the second half, getting some breathing room when Milan Gandesha knocked in his third of the season to make it 2-0.

Domingos made 12 saves, recording his third shutout of the season. A native of Brazil, Domingos stopped 12 shots to bolster his league-leading save percentage of .865.

Handing the league-leading Mariners their second loss of the season was particularly satisfying.

Ranked 13th in the nation in a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association poll, Douglas has dropped a pair of games to the Nanaimo squad – including 5-1 on Sept. 15 – yet remain within kicking distance of first place.

The Royals play the No. 5-ranked Capilano Blues twice this week – Saturday in North Vancouver and Sunday (3 p.m.) at Town Centre Park.

They aim to avenge a pair of losses, both decided in the final minute.

Big plays propel Hyacks past Jugglers

Quick breakouts and dropped balls may be a good way to sum up Friday’s 36-14 New Westminster Hyacks’ win over the Notre Dame Jugglers.

Head coach Farhan Lalji noted he didn’t feel great after the victory. But as imperfect as it was, it was still more momentum for last year’s finalist.

“We didn’t move the ball as consistently as we’d have liked ….

(Notre Dame) did some good things scheme-wise but they also were probably at times more physical than us in certain areas.

The score was deceiving because (Notre Dame) did a really good job.”

New West took an early lead, scoring three times in the first quarter off two huge runs by swift Michael Udoh, and a fumble recovery by lineman Owen Stark.

Up 22-0 before the opening quarter ended, the Hyacks appeared to ease up but still benefitted from a few bobbles and fumbles that halted a couple of Notre

Dame marches.

While the visitors got into the end zone in the second quarter to enter halftime trailing 22-8, they were unable to capitalize, mostly due to fumbles, despite posting 153 yards running the ball.

Knowing that Notre Dame would be well-prepared to match the Hyack wing-T offence system, since adopting it as their own in preseason, made it a challenge from the get-go. But a couple of quick strikes helped knock the Jugglers off point early.

Udoh’s first major, on a 65-yard race on the team’s first possession, gave the home crowd an immediate reason to cheer.

It was followed by Stark pouncing on a Jugglers fumble for the team’s second major on the next series.

It didn’t take long for Udoh to strike again, this time on a 62-yard dash. Both rushing TDs were followed by successful two-point converts.

“We’ve had some big plays for sure,” remarked Lalji of the start.

“We don’t need a lot but we still want to be consistent.We’ve been

blessed, we have speed, we have the athletes, but we need to be a little bit better.”

In the second half, Greyson Planinsic carried it in from five yards out to make it 30-8.

The Hyacks’ Austin Galbraith put an end to any wild hopes of a Jugglers comeback with a 28-yard scamper along the left field line to make it 33-14.

“Bascally we came in not too confident,” said Stark. “We knew (Notre Dame) was a good team and that their (offensive) line had potential and they’d come out strong. But we definitely felt we were equipped and bigger and stronger and were ready to take them on.

“The main goal coming in was to play as a team and play all together. Do our best in every single position – it’s all pieces of the puzzle and without each one the puzzle wouldn’t be full.”

Udoh finished with a game-high 158 yards on 11 carries, and added 41 yards on two catches.

Taran Birdi’s lone carry was an impressive 26-yard run early in the final quarter only to see the ball turned over to Notre Dame one play later off one of the squad’s four fumbles.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter after a two−year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a loving husband to his wife of 54 years, Elfriede, and caring father of his two children − daughter, Susannah (Jason Moore), and son, Daniel (Allison Mounsey). He leaves his adored grandchildren, Max and Mia Moore, and Elliott, Tessa, and Megan Rohloff.

Peter was born in Greifswald, Germany, but the family was relocated to Lübeck at the end of the war. While studying English and Geography at the University of Hamburg, a student from Vancouver convinced Peter to apply for a scholarship to UBC, where he met Elfriede Richter. They returned to Germany to complete their studies and were married in 1965. They then moved back to Vancouver, where Peter finished his PDP at SFU. In January of 1971, Peter started his 30−year career as a teacher at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary. He soon started an after−school string group, developed a full orchestra curriculum, and, eventually, conducted the school choirs. He pioneered the VSB Strings program, preparing elementary school kids for high school orchestra.

With a newborn daughter, the family moved to Burnaby in 1973. In 1975, his son arrived. Over the next decade, Peter took courses to further his music education, showed astonishing carpentry skills in renovating his house, took his family on cross−country camping journeys, trips to visit family in Germany, and skiing or sailing adventures. On a years’ leave in 1998, he and Elfriede went on a 7−month journey around the world by sea and by train. After retirement, they travelled extensively, most notably through the Northwest Passage to Greenland and Antarctica via the Falkland Islands.

Peter was always involved in music. He organized and played in various quartets and ensembles. He conducted church, community, and club choirs, led the Intermediate VYSO, and started the Johann Strauss Ensemble. Peter was especially passionate about a series of Baroque music concerts that he organized for seven seasons at Redeemer Lutheran Church. He sang with Chor Leoni, played in the West Coast Symphony, and started a music publishing company to promote local composers, as well as music that his grandfather and great uncles composed.

We are very thankful for the excellent care that Peter received at Burnaby Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Peter would want you to support the local classical music scene. A celebration of life will be held on October 26, at 10 am at First Lutheran Church, 5745 Wales Street, Vancouver, with a reception to follow.

Bobby B. passed quietly after five years suffering the increasing challenges of vascular dementia. He was raised in Cadomin, AB, and spent his adult life in Burnaby, working 37 years for Canada Safeway.

He loved frequent holidays in Maui, road trips to Alaska, playing hockey, bowling, golf, karaoke, dancing, rock and roll and hot cars. He is remembered by his five children, four grandchildren and friends for his enthusiastic embracing of life.
