New Westminster Police Department Chief Const.

Dave Jones made the most money of any city employee in New Westminster last year, taking home more than $230,000.

Jones topped the list of highest-paid city employees in New Westminster, beating out chief administrative officer Lisa Spitale by $812.

Including expenses, which amounted to $11,503, Jones’ total pay was $242,582, according to documents obtained by the Record through a freedom of information request.

Overall, the police department’s top brass took home more than $1 million Dave Jones Chief Constable in pay last year plus an additional $33,730 in expenses. Deputy Chief Const. Dave Jansen received $217,173 (including expenses) while inspectors Paul Hyland and Todd Matsumoto were paid $200,960 and $187,317, respectively. Insp. Chris Mullin made $172,368 and Insp.Trevor Dudar made $166,853, including expenses.

The department’s second-highest paid member, whose name was withheld for work-related concerns, made $212,506.

Up until 2006, the City of New Westminster’s statement of financial information included members of the New Westminster Police Department.

The department was excluded from the annual report over safety concerns for undercover officers, and because the Police Act supersedes the Financial Information Act, the city was able to make the change.

New Westminster city council will be losing at least 29 years of experience following the fall election.

While several incumbents are seeking re-election, Lorrie Williams and Bill Harper will be retiring from city council.

“You look at your life and think, maybe it’s time.

It’s been 16 years, five elections.When you think about that, you think that is a long time,”Williams told the Record. “There is some awfully good people in New Westminster. I don’t mind making room for them.”

Williams said she’s proud of a number of accomplishments during her time on city council, including the installation of the Wait for Me Daddy war memorial in Hyack Square and the increase in child-care spaces in the city. While she’ll miss not seeing some outstanding initiatives completed, including construction of a new animal shelter, she’s looking forward to new endeavours.

“It’s kind of nice to go out on a high,” she said. “I am healthy. I am so lucky.

This is precious time now.”

Williams said she’ll miss serving on city council but doesn’t plan to volunteer for civic committees for at least a year.

Renovictions ‘scary’ for tenants

More than 60 residents packed a meeting on a smoky summer Sunday afternoon to learn what they can do to tackle renovictions.

The Vancouver Tenants Union distributed leaflets about its Aug. 19 meeting to tenants in several buildings it knew had been sold or had begun renoviction proceedings, but the group has since learned of other buildings being impacted by renovictions.

“There were a lot of concerns,” said David Hendry, an organizer with the Vancouver Tenants’ Union. “After having a lot of discussion, I think most people are pretty interested, especially in those buildings, in trying to band together and trying to fight these. It was good.”

According to Hendry, at least eight apartment buildings in New Westminster have been purchased this year, with tenants in some of those buildings having already received eviction notices.

“It is scary for a lot of people,” he said. “There aren’t many options for them if they want to stay in the neighbourhood.”

Hendry said the Vancouver Tenants Union plans to meet with tenants of other buildings in New West who are experiencing renovictions.

“From there, I think what we need to do is try and set up meetings within those buildings and have those people start to strategize

The Vancouver Tenants Union advises tenants not to immediately move out or to sign anything if they get eviction notices. Because the “whole neighbourhood is experiencing this crisis,” it believes it’s time for residents to get to know their neighbours and help each other fight for what they need.

“Our strategy is to try, without being alarmist, to let people know and get people understanding their rights before they start receiving eviction notices be-

cause when that happens people understandably get very panicked and scared, and start scrambling around for other housing,” Hendry said.

“Sometimes the companies file eviction notices that don’t have very good grounds, and they basically try to get as many people out as possible, even when they don’t have a very good case for it.”

While the Vancouver Tenants Union has provided the province with 50 policy changes it would like to see adopted and the City of New Westminster has lobbied for changes to the Residential Tenancy Act, Hen-

dry said it could take time before changes are introduced at the provincial level that prevent renovictions.

“A big focus of the meeting was that we don’t know when these changes will be decided upon or when they will actually be put into place. It could be months, it could be even a year from now,” he said. “We were really strong about saying the number 1 line of defence is tenants organizing in their buildings.That’s the number 1 way that we can try to hold things off as long as we can for some of those policy changes to be put into effect. I think that’s our best bet.”

John Stark, the city’s acting manager of planning, said the city is aware of 10 buildings and 215 units where renoviction have occurred in New Westminster in the past three years.

“There may be renovictions that the city is not aware of – renovictions done without permits and where no complaints were filed with the city – so this number is likely an underestimate,” he said in an email to the Record.

“These numbers are based on renovictions where there is evidence that the renoviction has actually occurred (building permit issued, etc.). The numbers of potential future renovictions or rumoured threats of renovictions would likely be much higher.”

The city has pursued a number of initiatives regarding renovictions, including distributing the Tenants Survival Guide to tenants, providing tenants with information about whether the property owner has the required permits or approvals in place for renovations, putting forward resolution to Union of B.C. Municipalities to take the incentive out of renovictions and flagging changes in ownership around rental buildings

and contacting tenants.

“We did put a resolution to the Union of B.C. Municipalities specifically to take the incentive out of renovictions,” Stark said.

“That would be, after renovations have occurred that tenants would be given first right of refusal at a rent that would be no more than what they previously had, plus any annual adjustments. We have been working with the province to deal with this.”

If tenants have lived in buildings for 10 or 15 years, Stark said they could be paying rents that are $300 or $400 below market rents, as the annual allowable increases haven’t kept up.

“For those individuals, if they are faced with having to relocate, it’s really difficult,” he told the Record after residents rallied against renovictions at a local apartment earlier this summer. “There are no units available at the rents they are currently paying.

If they find a unit, sometimes they are having to make those difficult decisions as to food and other essentials. It is definitely an issue.”

Stark said renovictions create “a lot of uncertainty and angst” for tenants, but it’s an issue that must be dealt with at the provincial level through the Residential Tenancy Act. “As a city, we cannot withhold a building permit. We have to process the building permit. It’s difficult. We don’t have that jurisdiction to withhold.”

Ex-mayor quashes rumour Tales of former mayor Wayne Wright’s return to the political arena are greatly exaggerated.

Wright told the Record he’s fielded calls from locals asking him to run for mayor again, but he won’t be running.The Record has also been contacted by residents who’ve heard rumours Wright might run again.

“It’s pretty easy for people to see me and say, ‘Come on back, we want you.’ It is very gratifying. It makes me feel good, but I am not prepared to do that,”Wright said. “That would be silly, but it’s still nice to hear.”

Wright doesn’t think running for mayor is the right thing to do at this time – for himself or the city.

“I have had my go. I want the city to keep going forward,” he said. “I think a good mix on council will take care of the situations that are coming up now.”

With one term under his belt as mayor,Wright believes Mayor Jonathan Cote is poised to be a leader at Metro Vancouver, which is facing the retirements of a number of mayors in the region.

With all seven members of city council currently endorsed by the New Westminster and District Labour Council,Wright said he thinks it would be good for the city if people from a variety of political backgrounds were elected.

“Our communications department does work with a lot of local businesses.We haven’t heard a lot of negative feedback about people not getting access quickly.

It’s not something that we have heard from the community that is needed or is a shortcoming.”

Other components of the New West Progressives economic platform include consulting with the business community to determine the feasibility of implementing an unoccupied business property tax to encourage landowners to lease out their priorities, rather than having them sit empty and unused for extended period of time.The group also wants to designate and better promote a portion of Columbia Street as Bridal Row.

The New West Progressives believe more work needs to be done to strengthen the local economy.

The electors group recently released its economic platform, which includes commitments to support the development of a regional economic development strategy, to expand the number of business improvement areas in the city and to limit average business tax increases to no more than the rate of inflation through 2022.

“We really believe the city can play an important role in helping to foster and facilitate economic growth,” said Bryn Ward, one of the New West Progressives council candidates. “However, the reality is entrepreneurs face a lengthy and complicated system if they want to set up shop in our city.This needs to change or we’ll continue to see high-

er-than-normal commercial vacancy rates in our city.”

The Progressives would like to introduce a “one-staff interface” model that would have a single city staff person acting as a “navigator” to help with all the necessary permit and approval processes.

“For businesses to have one person that is the ‘navigator’ at city hall, to guide them through the process, I think that would also eliminate a lot of time from one department to the next, trying to get answers and information,” said Ward, who said she’s personally experienced issues as a real estate agent trying to get information from city hall.

Coun. Mary Trentadue said the city has been working toward a one-stop-shop kind of business model for all kinds of services that businesses and residents may need as part of the city hall renovation.

Road closed for NWSS construction Residents living near New Westminster Secondary School can expect some road closures this week to make space for the installation of a water main for the new school.

Periodic closures started on Wednesday (yesterday) and are expected to last about three days, according to a notice issued by the New Westminster school district. $638,888

Crews working on the new high school, which is being built on the former site of the skate park next to Mercer Stadium, are connecting a new water main line to an existing line located under the Massey Theatre driveway, according to the district.

The new line will travel from Sixth Street through the construction site to Massey Theatre. Dur-

ing construction, part of one lane on Sixth Street is closed while the west sidewalk along Sixth has been closed periodically.

Day of reckoning part of facing the ugly truth

To mark the suffering of the approximately 150,000 Indigenous children forced into residential schools, the federal government is planning a new statutory holiday.

We support that plan – if it’s done right.

After all, we take a solemn day every year to reflect on our war dead without letting Remembrance Day turn into a series of patio parties and mattress sales.

Today, schoolchildren learn about the horror of residential schools.

In the City of NorthVancouver, for example, the

municipal council discusses the 2,000 Squamish,TsleilWaututh and Sechelt Nation kids who were “aggressively assimilated” at St. Paul’s Indian Residential School.

Things have definitely changed for the better, but a quick glance at the comments section of any news website or politician’s Facebook page makes it clear there are swaths of people who still just don’t get it – or who don’t want to get it.

These are the same willfully ignorant blowhards who complain that the removal of a John A. Macdon-

It’s true, John A. was our most important father of Confederation. He was also the father of a government policy to starve Indigenous people.

The idea of taking away his statue is so Indigenous people don’t have to face such an ugly reminder whenever they walk into this particular government building.

If you aren’t Indigenous, then you won’t understand the pain suffered by generations. So maybe try understanding that it’s not “PC

culture” but recognizing our country’s long history of terrible treatment of Indigenous people.

Ironically, the controversy over removing the statue has done more to educate people than an artist’s bronze work ever could.

Both the statue and holiday are only symbols, however, not a substitute for clean drinking water or infrastructure on reservations throughout the country.

Canadians are often smug when they look at the U.S. and see that Flint, Michigan residents have been without clean drinking wa-

ter for a long time. But in Canada, there are an estimated 93 reserves that have not had drinkable water in many years, in some cases decades. Residents have to boil it first.

Would you put up with that? If you aren’t Indigenous, would you even have to put up with that?

Our national policy of unintentional and intentional abuse ruptured families and caused harm that can still be seen and felt today.

That’s an ugly truth, but if we ever hope to achieve reconciliation, we all need to start with the truth.

B.C.’s budget is on razor’s edge The BC NDP will provide its first official update of government finances soon, and there are indications things are not as rosy as they appeared in the budget when it was tabled in February.

While it is not likely to tip into a deficit, the bottom line may be perilously close to doing just that.

The biggest area of concern for Finance Minister Carole James has to be the dramatic slowdown in the housing market.

Some have theorized that what has driven B.C.’s impressive economic growth has been the red-hot real estate sector. It has become a $50-billion-a-year industry for economic activity and government revenue.

The budget forecast revenues to government generated by the property transfer tax would increase by $100 million to more than $2.2 billion. And other areas of taxation – income and sales taxes – have also been boosted by spinoff activities from what has been a busy market. But the slump in the market will undoubtedly eat into those projected revenue estimates.

Just how much the hit will be will not be known until next spring, but the government’s first quarterly financial report is a start.

The Real Estate Board of GreaterVancouver recently released statistics that showed a whopping 30 per cent decline in home sales in the region when comparing July 2018 sales figures to the ones in July 2017.

And the July sales figures of this year were down almost 15 per cent from June, which suggests sales are continuously declining. If sales decline by 20 per cent over the course of the year, that could cost the government hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue.

James’ budget is projecting a surplus of $219 million and has built in a cushion of $900 million in contingencies and a forecast allowance. But the costs incurred from fighting wildfires will likely take a big chunk of that, and any large slippage in property transfer taxes could consume the rest.The irony is James and her party promised to make housing prices more affordable and while they have started to fall, affordability is still nowhere in sight.

Meanwhile, those increased housing taxes may threaten a balanced budget.

SALUTE TO THE PNE I’d like to give a shoutout to the PNE. I worked 10 consecutive fairs as a teen and young adult. It remains a great employer of youth, who can make a tidy sum over the course of the fair just in time to head back to school. So even if there are some hazy spots on B.C.’s economic horizon, here’s hoping the annual fair does well and continues to be a traditional beacon of employment opportunities for young people (and older ones as well).

City rants about those raves New Westminster council voted to ban raves within the city’s borders, after the publicity garnered by Vancouver considering making the all-night parties legal.

Despite little notice to its being added late to the city meeting’s agenda, about 10 people in support of raves attended the public meeting. But a recent rash of problems, with four overdoses reported at one event in October, sparked council to act.

A representative of the New Westminster Police Service said the police don’t support raves because of the availability of drugs at the parties and reported one death at a local rave earlier in the year.

Letters Vagabond Players should be applauded for service Editor: Just want to recognize such gifted and generous people in our community. Recently a group from KIDS Child Care were given an amazing experience by the Vagabond Players, including a tour of Bernie Legge Theatre.

Upon arrival, the children were welcomed to view and touch props, including realistic boulders and a golden brown cooked turkey. In the dressing room and the costume storage area, we were shown period dresses, uniforms, hats, various wigs and plenty more.

Trying a number of hats on sparked young imaginations.

The antique RCMP jacket, jungle safari hat and the ghost dress were favourites. We viewed the furniture and prop storage area, as well as the workshop for building sets.

Then it was back up to the stage for all the children to rehearse and perform a mini-play.

Thank you, Vagabond Players and Bev Pride, for inspiring the children’s enthusiasm for live theatre.

Trains are noisy, but don’t forget about the racket from the SkyTrain Editor: I have been in New Westminster for 29 years, living about 200 metres from the SkyTrain tracks.

I read those articles over the many years about people complaining about the trains.

I know how much noise there can be because I worked on an apartment tower being built by the tracks.

But now the SkyTrain has had a big increase in noise level and it is more bothersome than the trains ever were.

No more strategic voting Editor: B.C. will soon hold a referendum to determine whether or not our government should implement proportional representation, or “pro rep.” It is very important that we all vote “yes.”

There are many reasons to vote yes, but for me the most important one is climate change. It’s a hard subject to talk and think about. But it’s real, and it’s been here for a while, and it’s the reason I’m giving up meat and giving up having children and giving up vacationing on airplanes. I turn 30 this year – on our present course, I do not believe I will live to reach 50.

And as the smog from wildfires once more engulfs our sky, I spend many of my nights attempting to make peace with death.

I know the people of B.C. feel a great yearning to fight this thing – to fight for our children and for a habitable Earth. But because our current election system is broken, our yearning has only ever gone to waste. If we pass this referendum, we can finally dispense with all the useless “strategic voting” that hamstrings our every effort to conduct a successful democracy. We can finally join together and vote for the change we want.

Labour council to endorse full slates Last election, group endorsed all council members, but only five school trustees Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

The New Westminster and District Labour Council expects to endorse a full slate of candidates for New Westminster’s city council and school board.

Prior to each civic election, the labour council endorses candidates vying for mayor, councillor and school trustee in 14 communities in the region. Four years ago, the organization endorsed one mayoral, six councillor and five trustee candidates in New Westminster.

“For New Westminster, it is our intention to endorse full slates for both,” said Janet Andrews, secretary-treasurer of New Westminster and District Labour Council.

In June, the labour council selected some of the local candidates it will be endorsing in the Oct. 20 municipal election. It will be voting on the remaining candidates to be endorsed this week.

“We have 14 member municipalities in our region.You can imagine it’s a lot to get through,” Andrews said of the endorsement process. “We did a vote in June on

June 27.”

Although the labour council will inform candidates whether they’re being endorsed at the conclusion of its internal process, Andrews said it won’t be releasing the information publicly until nominations close on Sept. 15.

She said there have been cases where people may change their minds and the labour council doesn’t want to be left with an inaccurate list of candidates.

Candidates, however, are permitted to say whether they’ve received the NWDLC’s endorsements.To date, incumbent mayor Jonathan Cote, incumbent councillors Patrick Johnstone and Mary Trentadue and first-time candidate Chinu Das have confirmed to the Record that they’ve been en-

dorsed by the New Westminster and District Labour Council.

In the 2014 civic election, labour council-endorsed candidates in New Westminster swept city hall, taking all six councillor positions and the mayor’s seat, as well as five of seven spots on the school board.

People who want an endorsement must complete an application and go through an in-person interview.

A recommendation then goes to the labour council’s delegates, representing a variety of unions in the region, who vote on the candidates.

Andrews said the labour council endorses people it thinks are going to be really strong representatives, are progressive, share its values and will build a strong community.

“We feel very strongly the people we endorse share our values for one thing, which is important to our members and our organizations, our affiliates, and we think they will do a really great job for New Westminster and the community and the people there,” she said.

Mayor conducts online survey Mayor Jonathan Cote is seeking input from residents and businesses on topics like housing, transportation, public amenities and the local economy.

As part of the incumbent mayoral candidate’s re-election campaign, he’s launched a survey on his election website – www.votecote.ca. The survey is open until Aug. 31. “New Westminster is a diverse community and I want my platform to reflect that diversity,” Cote said in a press release.

“The more leaders involve citizens in the processes that shape our shared future, the more that future is reflective of everyone’s needs.”

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project

Open House and Invitation to Comment The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) proposes to replace the existing Pattullo Bridge (proposed Project) with a new four-lane bridge spanning the Fraser River just north and upstream of the existing bridge and, similar to the existing bridge, its approaches will connect to McBride Boulevard in New Westminster and King George Boulevard in Surrey, British Columbia. Once the new bridge is constructed and operational, the existing bridge will be decommissioned.

The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and under section 67 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012.

BC’s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority have agreed to a coordinated provincial-federal environmental assessment process for the proposed project.

There are 33 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the Application. The public comment period will begin on September 6, 2018 and end on October 9, 2018.

The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. This feedback will also be considered as part of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s Project and Environmental Review process.

All comments received during this comment period will be considered.

No, it wouldn’t. Most of us have learned there’s a time and place for certain behaviours, and I strive to teach my children the same.

When we visit a library, a restaurant, or a retail store where lower volumes are expected, my children should not act in the same way as they would in an outdoor playground or in their own backyard.

In public places, inside voices are simply mandatory for this mom.

This is one in a series of workshops by the Allies in Aging Volunteer Impact Team. Our goal is to reduce social isolation among seniors in Metro Vancouver.

Arts & Entertainment Hip hop fest returns to Westminster Pier Park R&B and hip hop lovers, get ready for a two-day party.

Safe & Sound Music Fest 2018 is coming to Westminster Pier Park Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25.

Headlined by Anderson .Paak and Vince Staples, the festival plays host to a big lineup of talent, both local and international. Other performers include Alina Baraz, Sabrina Claudio, Goldlink, SonReal, Rico Nasty, Anders, LNDN DRGS, Manila Grey and So Loki.

“After a great first year with the (festival), we’re proud to return this summer to the same pristine waterfront location at Westminster Pier Park for two days of live contemporary R&B and hip hop music,” said Paul Stollen, president of Safe & Sound Entertainment, in a press release.

“Being able to produce such an intimate festival experience at such an accessible location has been a dream come true.”

Stollen noted that, as a Vancouver-basic hospitality company, Safe & Sound works with many local artists, so he’s pleased to have the chance to invite them to the festival stage.

Landscape architect Bruce Hemstock will be sharing stories about the development ofWestminster Pier Park at this weekend’s Faces of the Fraser speaker program at the Fraser River Discovery Centre.

Hemstock, a partner with PWL Partnership Landscape Architects, was the partner in charge of the design and implementation ofWestminster Pier Park, which opened on New Westminster’s waterfront in 2012. He’s proud of the fact that the park’s design draws inspiration from the historical, cultural, and ecological influences of the Fraser River and recognizes the strong ties the city and its residents have had with the river over the years.

“The Pier Park has been a fantastic addition to the waterfront, so we are very excited to have Bruce join us to talk about it as part of Faces of the Fraser,” said Discovery Centre executive director Stephen Bruyneel. “With all the different interests in the Fraser River, it wasn’t easy to plan and develop the park, so we look forward to hearing how he was able to do just that.”

Cadet Salina Ng of 2316 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in NewWestminster developed personal health and fitness skills when completing the sixweek fitness and sports instructor course at Albert Head Cadet Training Centre, which is located near Victoria. She was selected to receive the prestigious ANAVETS Cadet Medal of Merit for her outstanding performance this summer and in recognition of her being Top Cadet of her course.

The six-week course provides cadets an opportunity to develop as a fitness and sports specialist, providing the skills and knowledge needed to be a fitness and sports instructor and a team leader for fitness and sports activities conducted at the corps during regionally directed activities and/or as a staff cadet at a cadet training centre.

More than 70 cadets, including Ng, completed the fitness and sports instructor course this summer.

Library kids’ programs on the move this fall The main branch of the New Westminster Public Library is entering the final phase of its renovation, which will last six to eight months.The library will remain open, with available collections and services accessible on the second floor, but the main branch’s children’s programs will be moving off-site to other accessible community locations.

The library’s drop-in Preschool Storytime (ages two to five) will be starting on Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. It will take place on Tuesdays at the Centennial Community Centre (65 East Sixth Ave.) and on Thursdays at the Plaskett Gallery in Massey Theatre (735 Eighth Ave.).

The drop-in Babytimes (newborn to 23 months) start on Sept. 19 at the Centennial Community Centre and will run every Wednes-

day at 10:30 a.m.

The English and French Reading Buddies programs (ages six to nine) will take place at the Plaskett Gallery in the Massey Theatre at 3:30 p.m. English Reading Buddies will meet on Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 18, and French Reading

Many of you will know of Sapperton Landing Park – located beside the Fraser River below the Fraserview area – as you drive or walk along East Columbia Street in New Westminster.This is a great park from which to see the river, watch vessels of many types sail past, note wildlife of the area and experience the differences season after season.

It is also a great spot to remember the many local historical links, including the Columbia detachment of Royal Engineers and their camp, the early Government House, B.C. Penitentiary, early railroads and streetcars, royal visits and so on.

And now this site, which has been part of many of our presentations and walking tours over the years, is moving ahead towards a new phase of development that will add another place from which to enjoy more of the river and the local

history.

You will likely have noted that a major construction project has been ongoing for some time upriver from Sapperton Landing Park.

The project is the construction of Metro Vancouver’s new Sapperton wastewater pump station.

The website for this project shows that, along with the pumping station, the site will also include a new recreation area from which to look out over the river and, according to a diagram of the proposed layout, will tentatively be known as “Cumberland Point.”

There is much more to this project, so have a look at www.metrovancouver. org – search for Sapperton Pump Station.

The new riverside recreational location, which will now offer access to both sides of the mouth of the Brunette River, will also supply additional opportunities to link more sites and views to the heritage and history of this particular area.

The area was home to the Brunette Sawmill for many years, during which this mill was a prominent landmark.

Along the waterfront upriver from here were many other industries well known to those near the river.This is also the location of some dramatic photos showing ships of sail loading lumber for destinations around the world.

The entrance channel of the Brunette River itself has a connection to sternwheel steamboats as it was sometimes used as a place in which to secure a paddlewheeler during winter to protect the vessel from crushing effects of river ice.

It is also important to note that the local First Nations knew the waters of the Brunette as well as those of the Fraser and would have used the Brunette River to travel inland from the main river and for shelter.

This Sapperton pump station project is going to add some interesting historical connections to the already popular park.

Schuss picks up bounty There’s no substitute for ending the season on a winning note, but a couple of New Westminster Salmonbellies did earn their share of hardware with the unveiling of the Western Lacrosse Association’s 2018 award winners.

New West’s Logan Schuss and Mike Messenger were named last week as the Commission Trophy and Gordon C. Nicholson Memorial Award recipients on the heels of solid seasons.

Schuss, who also picked up the Denny Huddleston Memorial Award as the league’s leading scorer as well as the circuit’s Three Star Award, was voted the Commission winner in a vote of the board of governors.The 27-year-old forward established careerbests with 37 goals and 69 assists over 17 regular season contests, doubling his point production of a year ago.

The Commission Trophy, first presented in 1958, is handed to the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Messenger, meanwhile, played in only 11 regular season games due to a long playoff run with the National Lacrosse League’s Saskatchewan Rush. He tallied three goals and six assists.

The Nicholson award is given to the player who demonstrates outstanding defensive skills while possessing leadership qualities on and off the floor.

Both Schuss and Messenger were named to the WLA’s first all-star team, joining goaltender Frank Scigliano and forward Curtis Dickson, both of Maple Ridge,Victoria’s Casey Jackson and Nanaimo’s Drew Belgrave.

New West netminder Alexis Buque, who posted a league-best nine wins this past season, was voted to the league’s second all-star team.

They know their future, but the Douglas College women’s Royals soccer team want to cinch their destiny.

The squad enters the 2018 PacWest League season with a big red circle on their calendar as hosts and participants at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s championship in November.

All the stressing and hand-wringing that goes with battling for a berth can be cast aside – or at least converted into something more organic – as the Royals hone in on building a challenger for a national crown.

After last year’s PacWest league title and a fifthplace finish at the nationals, knowledge and experience will be major assets as the squad kicks off the regular season Sept. 8 against Langara at Coquitlam Town Centre Park.

“Our focus is to find a rhythm, find who plays well together, what formations we can throw out there and give players minutes,” remarked head coach Chris Laxton on Tuesday. “Most important, give players rest so we don’t need to put them through the grind of 12 games in seven weeks.

We can hopefully give them time to rest and be ready in time for November.”

Knowing you’ll be playing Nov. 7 to 10 with the rest of Canada’s best teams eases some of the early details every club faces to launch a season. But it doesn’t inoculate them from doing all the hard work and checking off the necessary items when it comes to marking a successful year.

Laxton considers the offseason work, primarily recruiting and player retention, as big pluses.

When it comes to new additions, the team stocked up at every position, including Burnaby midfielder Mikaela Montagano, Surrey forward Sofia Flores-Aguilera, Ladner centre back Hannah dela Cruz, and midfielder Emma Thomas of PoCo. “They’re going to make an impact in their first year, especially with the minutes we’re able to throw around knowing our end date and we know we’re going to play in November,” said Laxton of his eight additions.

The pre-season results haven’t been all negative, despite the losses to Simon Fraser University and a pre-

mier youth squad. Air quality squashed a planned exhibition test in Bellingham on Tuesday, and hopefully won’t scrub games planned in Kamloops this week.

Building for November won’t mean easing into September. Last year’s 1-1-1 start isn’t something they look to emulate, but knowing they’ve got plans in November doesn’t erase the pressure. It’s just now more internally, and will give them a concise blueprint to follow and improve on during the coming months.

“It’s going to be me putting my ego in check and making sure we’re doing the right things instead of chasing things we don’t necessarily need,” said Laxton.

Ruth resided in Burnaby for 70 years.

As you may recall, we published ballots during the month of May and offered a $750 shopping spree at Royal City Centre as an incentive for you, the loyal reader, to cast your votes for the best in New West in 120 business categories. In keeping with its ethos of providing cutting edge technology, a few years ago Dr. Murphy introduced a New Gum procedure, Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). This scalpel-free, suture-free procedure is used to correct gum recession.

“It is an excellent alternative to traditional grafting techniques, and much more comfortable for the patient,” he explains.

Dr. Murphy comes with exceptional credentials. The highly skilled professional graduated in 2003 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the well-respected Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. While at Dalhousie, he was elected Class President, President of the Dental Society and Class Valedictorian.

In addition, Dr. Murphy was accepted into a one-year Dentistry General Practice Residency (GPR) at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. After that, he went on to practice in New Westminster for a few years prior to purchasing Queens Park Dental from Dr. Lyle Agar.

“I see myself as a lifelong learner and endeavour to provide top notch care by participating in continuing education to learn the latest techniques,” he adds.

Besides its state-of-the-art dentistry, Queen’s Park Dental is a practice with “Heart.”

Dr. Murphy regularly donates to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation and has established a yearly scholarship to a graduating student at New Westminster Secondary. It doesn’t stop there.

Dr. Murphy personally takes time out of his busy practice to volunteer at the British Columbia Coroners Service (BCCS) as a Forensic Odontologist.

“My team also donates a day to ring the bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas,” he says.

Both Jeanie and Rick come with a wealth of experience and education.

Jeanie received her degree in communications from Simon Fraser University (SFU) with a minor in kinesiology. She then went on to graduate from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1995.

Rick completed three years in Kinesiology at SFU before graduating from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1988.

“Together, we have over 50 years of combined experience,” says Jeanie. “We have a lot of experience running a clinic, but we still have a lot to learn. We remain open minded, approachable, interested in and encourage ideas from staff.”

Philanthropy is also important to the couple. The team regularly raises funds for local non-profits, such as the Food Bank, Children’s Hospital, Variety Club, and Empty Stocking Fund.

Fraserside’s 45 years of community service began when a small group of people living in New Westminster saw and responded to a need in their community. This group found ways to help people help themselves, and our current team continues this approach to support over 1,800 people every year in six communities across Metro Vancouver. One major way we help people help themselves is by providing housing and residential support.

In 1990, when the Woodlands institution continued to downsize, and its former residents with developmental disabilities needed homes, we responded by opening residential group homes in the Tri-Cities area. In 1992, when an apartment building fire in New Westminster left its inhabitants homeless, we contracted with the Ministry of Social Services to create an emergency family shelter. In 2000, when many adults living with mental health issues in New Westminster were having difficulties finding and sustaining suitable living arrangements, we contracted with Fraser Health to provide a transitional housing program. The success of that program led to additional contracts to purchase more homes and open more supported housing programs in Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. And in 2007, when individuals living with both mental health and substance use issues in Surrey were struggling for housing, we opened a supportive housing program. The site of this program has since expanded to provide low barrier housing for adults who are at risk of homelessness.

Today we provide housing at 11 of our 14 facilities. But more is needed, especially in light of the regional housing shortage. Fraserside is actively assessing opportunities to expand our housing portfolio, seeking funding opportunities and recruiting personnel to meet this need. We invite you to join us! Each year, solely to serve his community without seeking anything in return, he takes it upon himself to fuel his tugboat and barge, and pilot his vessels to be positioned in front of the New Westminster Quay. This man, understated and humble, is Kim Alipradini. He is as elusive as he is reliable, and he is the unsung hero of the Fireworks.

As the owner of Valley Towing, the selfless service he provides makes it possible for our diverse community to enjoy this annual event.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Kim publicly on behalf of the New Westminster Hyack Festival Association.
