ROYAL COLUMBIAN Trauma Centres for adults in BC equipped, trained, and certified to deal with large scale catastrophes. • We are the cornerstone of a 24/7 Acute Stroke Team designed for fast, centralized and comprehensive support for stroke patients. • We are the only hospital in BC that has the capacity to treat both the mother and baby in certain critical care maternity cases.

One of the largest government-funded healthcare redevelopments in British Columbia’s history is well underway at Royal Columbian Hospital. The $1.35 billion project presents an unprecedented opportunity, and challenge, to elevate critical care at a hospital that serves one third of our province’s population in the largest and fastest growing health region in BC. We provide the highest level of care to some of the most critically ill and injured in the province. We are a provincial referral centre for cardiac care, trauma, neurosciences, high-risk maternity, neonatal intensive care, and mental health. No other hospital in the province offers all these services on one site at this level of care in such high volumes. • We are home to the busiest cardiac intervention unit in BC, performing more angioplasties than any other centre in the province. • We are one of only two Level 1

The redevelopment will increase our capacity by 50%, enabling us to treat 11,300 more patients per year. When complete, our hospital will have a new 75-bed Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre (under construction now and opening in April of 2020) and a new Acute Care Tower, set to open in 2024. By any measure, Royal Columbian is an economic powerhouse. Fuelled by this historic healthcare investment, a fully redeveloped Royal Columbian is poised to play an even more robust role in our collective prosperity. Redevelopment

will add hundreds of new jobs for doctors, nurses, support staff and construction-related workers. It will further stimulate economic output as related activities—such as doctors’ offices, other healthcare services, and research and development enterprises— take shape around the expanded hospital campus. Our time is now. It is Royal Columbian Hospital’s turn in the spotlight, and what is before us is the challenge of a lifetime. We can only achieve this bold vision with your help. welcoming & inclusive new west

uch is written about a city’s economic growth and global innovation. But, what about inclusivity? How does New Westminster ensure a city in which everyone — regardless of gender, race, age or ability — can live and thrive? “Immigration is driving our growth, and it is in our collective best interest that we reach out and assist new immigrants and refugees in order to help them better assimilate into the community,” says John Stark, senior social planner, City of New Westminster.

“That growth created settlement and integration issues,” adds Stark. That is why the city is proud that it has created an inclusive and resilient city environment thanks to the non-profit organization WINS – an acronym for Welcoming and Inclusive New West Local Immigration Partnership Council. An initiative set up in 2007 by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), WINS is a community-based partnership, which is made up of business, community, faith, settlement and social service organizations. WINS works with several local organizations to coordinate outreach services, like mentoring and employment training, to plan family-friendly events and much more.

According to Stark, new arrivals need easy access to information on public services. They often arrive with few resources, limited host language skills and different cultural perceptions. Finding efficient ways to help them access information directly is therefore imperative. “Sometimes it can be as simple as helping new immigrants with getting a library card, providing information about schools or how to find fun activities for their families to take part in,” he explains, adding WINS works closely with the city. “Some of the areas immigrants have told us they face challenges with include finding affordable rental housing, employment and training opportunities and information about available services.” Many immigrants and refugees report to WINS about the educational barriers they

face when they come to B.C. These include a lack of familiarity with the language, which prevents participation in the education system. Another is the frequent lack of equivalence between qualifications gained in their home countries. “There is a huge emphasis on employment issues and the Chamber has been very involved in helping its members see the benefits of hiring new immigrants,” Stark adds. The Newcomers Guide to New Westminster can be accessed by logging onto: www.newwestcity.ca/ multiculturalism

NEWWESTCHAMBER.COM

Between 2011 to 2016, the city experienced a growth in immigrant population of 69.7 per cent of total population growth. That translates to 38.9 per cent of the population reporting as visible minority.

here’s something almost magical about a public market – the aromas, the energy and smiles from friendly merchants. British Columbians have a love affair with markets. The River Market at Westminster Quay embodies that quintessential market experience – indulgent yet wholesome. Nestled along the riverfront, the market is a treasure trove full of independent vendors selling the highest quality local produce, prepared foods, international teas, flowers and handmade crafts and much more. Regardless of what time of year it is, there are throngs of people milling about, buying fruit and cheeses, or dining outdoors while watching boats and birds go by. “With eight great restaurants, and two new ones, Angelina’s Dutch Corner and Amaranthus Restaurant, people realize that River Market is a great destination,” says Salim Hassan, property manager, River Market at Westminster Quay. “Every shop is independently owned and operated, so more often than not you are greeted by the owner … it’s direct one-on-one personal service.” The popular Angelina’s was bursting at the seams at its former location. In its newly minted eatery, its Western European inspired menu will be expanding, and the restaurant will now be able to offer dinner. Meanwhile, the owner of the award-winning El Santo will introduce visitors to a plant-based carte du jour at Amaranthus Restaurant.

With stems and blooms sourced from local growers and suppliers, Bunches & Blooms creates striking arrangements that are at times dramatic or beautifully simple. Whether it is a joyous occasion such as a wedding, birth or anniversary, corporate affairs, or you are searching for interesting plants, Bunches & Blooms Floral will exceed your expectations.

“The chocolate bars we sell are truly the Cadillac of chocolate,” quips Wright “These are handcrafted, ethical chocolate bars from countries like Iceland, Austria, Vietnam and the U.S. These chocolate makers have direct relationships with the growers, so it goes beyond Fair Trade.”

Longtime New Westminster resident Robin Schafer has been in the industry for decades.

The upper level has attracted a host of artsy and intriguing businesses. Among them are La Perla Ballroom, The WyldeWood Collective, The Stage New Westminster and Hanson International Academy.

“I am known for carrying unusual and unique contemporary flowers,” says Schafer. “I create Japanese Ikebana flower arrangements, I sell tropical flowers, like Bird of Paradise and Protea, as well as Ecuador roses and hydrangeas, to name a few.”

Do you have a creative acrobat, dancer or contortionist in the family? Discover the thrill of high-flying acrobats at the family-owned Vancouver Circus School. The school has been teaching circus arts to children, teens, adults and seniors since 2004.

There are plenty of young businesses in the market too. For the serious chocolate lover, Origins Chocolate Bar offers arguably some of the best bean-to-bar offerings in the city.

“There is also The Network Hub, (a virtual office offering mailbox, meeting room rentals, co-working and private office space), which is great for entrepreneurs and small businesses,” says Hassan. “They can rent by the hour, week or month.”

“A bean-to-bar chocolate bar producer directly sources whole cocoa beans, and then roasts, grinds and conches them into chocolate in their own facility. Each producer gets paid fair price for their product,” says Katey Wright, who opened her stall with her husband Peter Jorgensen in September 2018. The couple has parlayed a passion for artisan, handcrafted chocolate into a career. Origins Chocolate Bar sells bars that have cult status among chocolate aficionados.

In addition to great shops, restaurants and schools, there is always something happening at the market. From buying organic and local produce to enjoying a meal from one of the market’s independent restaurants, the revitalized River Market showcases 25 of the province’s best independent restaurants, shops and schools all under one roof. “When you shop locally, you’re really making an investment in your community,” says Hassan.

Small Business, Big Ambitions ike many great entrepreneurial ideas, it started over a pint or two. While enjoying a few beers, New Westminster natives Jorden Foss and James Garbutt started musing about how great it would be to open their own tap house. “James and I were in Tofino, and we went to this great brewery that had just opened,” says Foss. “We started thinking that New Westminster could use something like that.” Armed with a degree in radio broadcast, Foss didn’t have a clue about brewing beer, but he wasn’t deterred. Foss started experimenting in his home. By June 2014, the longtime buddies burst onto the microbrew scene and soon took it by storm with Steel & Oak Brewing Co. a production brewery and taproom, which rotates 11 of its 16 brews on tap throughout the year. “We were confident about the product and our idea from the beginning, but, of course, being from New West I wanted to make people proud,” says Foss. Safe to say, Steel & Oak has. Using a mixture of North American, English and German brewing styles, techniques and ingredients, this burgeoning company has amassed several provincial beer awards, as well as the 2018 Canadian Brew Award. Its products

can be found in local restaurants, pubs and liquor stores. “We have gone from 8,000 litres the first year to half a million,” Foss says. “We have received incredible support from residents as well as the City and Chamber.” Small businesses helps drive the city’s engine It can be no surprise to anyone that small business and entrepreneurship drives economic growth. Once considered a “bedroom city,” in recent years New Westminster has become a re-energized hub with a vibrant downtown core. Now this small city is fast earning another reputation – as a boomtown for entrepreneurs and small businesses. Today, New West is attracting people from all over the Lower Mainland to live, work and play. As small businesses struggle elsewhere, New West is helping entrepreneurs thrive. “Small business plays a significant role in New Westminster’s economy,” says Mayor Jonathan Coté. “That’s why working together with local stakeholders such as the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce is so important, ensuring entrepreneurs have the support and services they need for their business to thrive and grow.”

Four Small Businesses Who Are Making Their Mark In the early 2000s, mid-century modern design was just beginning to make a resurgence. Today, the trend shows no signs of slowing down. Mid-century modern furniture broadly covers from the middle of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965). The multiple award-winning Mid-Century Modern HOME has been on the forefront of this trend since proprietor Jenny Cashin opened her doors in 2009. “I bought a 1913 heritage home in East Vancouver and restored it top to bottom,” says Cashin. “When I was furnishing my home, I fell in love with mid-century modern’s sleek, minimalist style. It is ergonomic and beautifully made furniture.” Originally, Cashin sublet a room in the city’s Antique Alley district, but after six months moved into the River Market. She credits her growth to the “awesome support of both the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and the City of New Westminster.”

Mid-Century Modern HOME showcases a beautifully curated collection of Danish Modern teak and rosewood furniture from the ‘50s and ‘60s – all lovingly restored, refinished and reupholstered. It also features a huge selection of vintage lighting, collectibles, art glass and pottery. Drawn to an era when things were masterfully handcrafted, customers appreciate purchases that are blessed with a “story, a legacy” spanning 50 or more years, and yet lovingly restored right on site to look new again. These timeless pieces will go on to be heirlooms - handed down from generation to generation.

COVER STORY “In 1987, my husband, Dr. Blain Stokowski, purchased a well-established practice located in the Seventh Street professional building,” Dr. Horner explains. “By September 1988, I became a partner and initially worked in the office on a part-time basis.” It quickly became apparent that the office was too small, so in 1989, the couple moved it to a larger space and named it the New Westminster Optometry Clinic (NWOC). “When my husband passed away suddenly in 1996, his practice became mine,” Dr. Horner says. About 10 years after assuming ownership of the landmark eye clinic, Dr. Horner moved the practice to its larger, present location in the Royal City Centre.

In April 2008, Dr. Horner became a founding member of FYi Doctors. Today, FYi Doctors is the largest eyecare provider in the country, with more than 75 optometry locations. Although Dr. Horner has “retired” from the practice, she still offers administrative support. The all-female talented team of six at FYI Doctors continues Dr. Horner’s legacy by carrying on the high standards of care she became renowned for.

Every doctor in the practice caters to patients of all ages, and each optometrist offers a variety of skill sets and areas of special interest. “We offer the most comprehensive care, including treating a lot of ocular diseases,” says Dr. Bligh. Both Horner and Bligh agree that both the City and Chamber have been instrumental in the success.

Dr. Errin Bligh joined the practice in 2015 because “of the feeling of support, professionalism and the personal eye care approach taken by all doctors.”

“We have a symbiotic relationship with the City and Chamber,” says Dr. Bligh. “We have deep roots in New West, and the Chamber has helped us a lot in terms of connecting us with other businesses.”

Using the most up-to-date technology, Dr. Bligh and the team provide comprehensive eye examinations, diagnose vision problems and eye disease, treat eye infections, injuries and allergies, while enhancing vision with the latest in contact lenses and eyewear.

In the spirit of giving back to the city that has backed the practice decade after decade, FYi Doctors offers free vision screening tests for the underprivileged through the New Westminster Homelessness Coalition’s Homelessness Connect program.

ADELE KAFER, CONNECTED HEART CRANIAL SACRAL

When locals are in pain, many head to Connected Heart Cranial Sacral for relief. Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a non-invasive, hands-on therapy that aims to enhance the body’s own healing capabilities. Founder of Connected Heart Cranial Sacral, Adele Kafer, entered the industry after a serious car accident in 1997. At the time, the certified cranial sacral therapist was in school studying to become a cultural anthropologist. “I was hit by a car going 65 miles an hour,” Kafer says. “Within two weeks, I couldn’t hold my head up and I was in chronic pain. I had to quit school, all of my activities and suffered with PTSD and concussions.” She’d read about CST and went for a treatment. “CST uses a gentle touch to manipulate the joints in the cranium or skull, parts of the pelvis, and the spine to treat disease,” Kafer explains. “It took my pain away, and I was able to stop taking pain killers.”

In 2011, Kafer decided to attend a 10-month diploma course. “I decided if I could help others find the relief I did, I would do something good in my life.” As a New Westminster resident, choosing the city to open shop made sense, but more than that it was the “positive, vibrant business environment” that ultimately sold her. “At the time, every entrepreneur was telling me that their business wouldn’t have been successful anywhere other than New West,” says Kafer, adding as a Chamber member she attends evening networking events. “Because New West is such a small, geographical community, all the independent merchants get to know each other and really support one another.” This is what true entrepreneurial spirit is, Kafer went on to say. “We have a great mayor, and residents really have this support-local attitude and that makes for great business collaboration,” she adds.

FOOD

thriving dining and wining scene

N

othing quite defines a city like a thriving culinary scene. From farm-fresh ingredients to local award-winning wines, sustainable seafood and organic meat, New Westminster chefs have a huge arsenal of ingredients to play with—whether the cuisine of choice is West coast, Asian fusion or any number of ethnic cuisines. When it comes to diverse gastronomic experiences, this riverfront urban expanse plays host to a vibrant restaurant scene, including its very own and very first Canadian urban winery. Tucked along historic Columbia Street, El Santo (Spanish for The Saint), has made a remarkable impact on the local dining scene. Packed nightly with enthusiastic foodies, this lively Latin-inspired restaurant has arguably become one of the city’s most celebrated restaurants. Earning acclaim from day 1 from locals and passionate epicureans, El Santo garnered best Latin Restaurant in Vancouver by Vancouver Magazine. Named after restaurateur Alejandro Diaz’s masked real-life hero and legend of Mexican sports, El Santo serves up contemporary Mexican cuisine emphasizing local, organic and sustainable ingredients. Executive chef Sam Fabbro uses “time-trusted techniques” to offer unique delectable dishes like Carne Ahumada, Chamorro and Chile Relleno. One of Columbia Street’s landmark eateries is Taverna Greka. For nearly four decades,

18

this Greek restaurant has been serving up the best of Mediterranean cuisine from proprietor Eleni Efstathiadis’ native, sundrenched country to New Westminster residents. Today, along with daughters Koula and Lena, Taverna Greka continues that tradition while greeting loyal clientele and new customers like family. If you haven’t been for awhile, it’s time to check out why serious foodies consider Taverna Greka the go-to restaurant for mouth-watering, authentic Greek gastronomy. Situated on the banks of the mighty Fraser River, the dishes are only rivalled by the views. The vistas are both soothing and relaxing, and the peaceful location of the restaurant means your time spent here will be memorable. Multiple award-winning Pacific Breeze Winery can lay claim to be the first Canadian urban winery. Founded in 2005 by Maurice Hamilton, he quips, “it was a hobby gone wild.” As a Top 100 Amateur Winemaker in the country, the New Westminster native decided his city could use a boutique winery. Using 95 per cent Okanagan grapes, Maurice’s son Dylan Hamilton and his wife Devon Stewart are the winemakers responsible for producing some stunning wines, like its Reserve Killer Cab and its Gewürztraminer. Come discover Pacific Breeze’s wines in the popular tasting room, by indulging in a flight of five tastings from its rotation of 16 wines. Or, become a member (700+ strong), and enjoy perks like wine

tasting soirees complete with charcuterie platters featuring live jazz and exclusive, first rights to new releases and much more. One of the city’s most popular brunch spots, Angelina’s Dutch Corner recently moved to a new spectacular riverfront location in the River Market at Westminster Quay. With the move into its larger, casually sophisticated home, Angelina’s now offers dinner service. Owner Eric Missouri still stands by his commitment to dishes all made in-house from scratch. Eric sources the freshest local ingredients as much as possible. Renowned in the Royal City for its signature Dutch fare, Angelina’s offers some of the most delectable pannekoek waffles and pancakes for even the most discerning palate.

El Santo’s executive chef Sam Fabbro is renowned for the award-winning restaurant’s Latin-inspired dishes Taverna Greka proprietor Eleni Efstathiadis is often found serving up smiles to go along with dishes at its landmark restaurant.

The program, appropriately named CONNECTIONS, is helping to connect employers and potential employees in the community. “CONNECTIONS functions as a kind of initial vetting,” says Nimmi Bangert, manager of the CONNECTIONS program. “We help businesses understand the local labour market and do a pre-screening of potential employees that ensures they have the right skills for the job.” The CONNECTIONS program is proactive. Rather than waiting for a business to approach Fraser Works Co-op about its hiring needs, then mining traditional sources like classified ads to find employees, Bangert reaches out to local businesses to learn about their challenges and then suggests services to help address their employment needs. She uses her resources to mine information and determine who might have the right combination of skills and experience to offer an employer.

The program is helping to raise awareness of the role the Chamber and the four agencies that form the Fraser Works Co-op – AWARE Society, Fraserside Community Services, MOSAIC and Pacific Community Resources Society – play in supporting the New West business community. Through the program, the Fraser Works Co-op advises employers about various subsidies and assistance programs that might ease the financial strain of hiring and training new employees. Working together, the partners are gaining insight into the local employment market and better serving the community.

eing a member of the New West Chamber of Commerce has given me opportunities to meet and socialize with many other New West business owners and operators. This has been important for learning about other products and services available locally, and for raising my own business profile within the community.

New West is a wonderful community to live in, and the Chamber of Commerce helps to build a better business community. RICK ALDER REALTOR

The CoC also holds educational seminars that have helped me in my business planning and marketing, and they put on a great Christmas party where we get to sing in public!

Any advice for new female entrepreneurs?

Katie Marshall FOUNDER MEDICAL ESTHETICS BY KATIE Katie Marshall is a medical esthetician with a decade of successful experience. With her broad knowledge of cosmetic chemistry, as well as topical and internal nutrition, her passion is helping people integrate optimal skin care, healthy habits and empowering nutrition into their lives to feel, look and to improve their sense of overall well-being. How has the Chamber assisted you? Being a chamber member has its benefits, regular networking events to meet other business owners, exchange ideas, market and network. Being a Chamber member conveys credibility and stability to your customers. Any advice for new female entrepreneurs? My advice for new female entrepreneurs is get a business coach and a mentor in your industry. Secure enough capital to sustain your business for the first year while you build; this can be a challenge as many banks don’t support female entrepreneurs. Be patient; success is not overnight.

NEWWESTCHAMBER.COM NEWWESTCHAMBER.COM

As an entrepreneur, you will need to research the business that you are going into, decide what you want to achieve, and set goals to meet those accomplishments. It is important to connect with people who have experience in business. Most important advice for new female entrepreneurs? Realize that you are going to make mistakes, learn from them and move on.
