GIVING AT MARIN CATHOLIC Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts every year and we rely on its support to provide the rich academic and extracurricular offerings that define the Marin Catholic experience. We depend on our entire community–current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty/staff, and friends–to support MC through the Annual Fund each and every year. Tuition Revenue alone does not cover the full cost of an MC education, leaving an approximate $3,400 per student gap and we look to the generosity of our community to provide unrestricted dollars to the operating budget that impacts everything at MC: • Helping MC meet its most urgent needs • Providing support for faculty/staff and curricular development • Enhancing programs in the arts and athletics • Allowing Campus Ministry to offer life-changing student retreats • Funding tuition assistance • Keeping the lights on • And much more!
Special Events & Grand Sponsors
Special events throughout the year raise funds for programs benefiting our students, increase awareness and engagement, and provide opportunities for our community to celebrate together. Grand Sponsors make a special underwriting gift that supports events throughout the year above and beyond their Annual Fund donation.
Directed Gifts
Directed gifts support specific programs and initiatives at MC, such as scholarships and financial aid and other identified areas of need. Last year, directed gifts provided the funds necessary to build two sound-proof recording and practice spaces in the music room.
Endowment
Gifts to the endowment provide for the financial sustainability of MC now and into the future. Endowed funds provide a stable revenue stream to the school’s operating budget each year while keeping the principal intact.
Campaigns
Campaigns fund projects essential to the growth and development of MC beyond our operating budget. Capital campaigns help MC evolve our facilities so that the campus supports and enhances 21st century learning and student life.
Planned Giving
Planned gifts provide MC with support in the future while allowing donors to attend to the financial needs of their families. Bequests and gifts of retirement accounts or life insurance policies are straightforward ways to support MC with a planned gift. 2018-2019 Event Highlights
Fall Play: David & Lisa • October 25-28, 2018
The Performing Arts Department in collaboration with the Visual Arts and Counseling Departments brought the play David and Lisa to our Marin Catholic community. The play follows the story of a boy named David who is sent to spend time at a new boarding school where he can get guidance in working through challenges regarding his mental health. There, he meets a girl named Lisa who is struggling in a similar way, and they are slowly able to help each other heal. The students took the subject matter very seriously and brought wonderful and accurate life to their characters. The maturity and collaboration of this production speak to the abilities that our students have cultivated while at Marin Catholic to work together and empathize. The sets, lighting, video, and design were all made possible by the students who are a part of our Visual Arts Department. Ms. Bell and her team of student producers worked seamlessly with our counselors to correctly portray this story.

Mother Son Dance • September 15, 2018
In September, moms and their sons attended the annual Mother-Son Dance and the Saint John Paul II Student Center was transformed into a “Tiki Lounge!” Dancing, fun, and many long-standing traditions were shared, including the first dance between senior boys and their moms and special guests.
Father-Daughter Dance • September 22, 2018
Girls, their fathers, and special guests danced the night away at a “Tahitian Night” Father-Daughter Dance. From the elegant decorations to the delicious treats, this time-honored tradition was truly a night to remember.
Golf Classic • September 10, 2018
Wildcat golfers hit the links at the Meadow Club in Fairfax for the 48th annual Marin Catholic Golf Classic. After a beautiful day on the course, the event concluded with a cocktail hour and awards ceremony in the clubhouse.
Alumni Homecoming • October 6, 2018
Marin Catholic welcomed back alumni for the annual Alumni Homecoming Beer & Bratwurst event at the Saint John Paul II Student Center. Alumni, their families, and friends gathered on the Ghilotti Family Observation Deck for an exciting football game and to share many memories. Thank you Brendan Moylan and the Marin Brewing Company for their generous in-kind support of this event.
MC Gala • November 3, 2018
Over 400 MC parents, past parents, alumni and friends gathered for cocktails and sampling cuisines from some of the top chefs and vintners in the Bay Area at our fall fundraiser, the MC Gala. Nearly $150,000 raised in funds directly benefited Marin Catholic students and programs. The night included a bucket drawing of five exciting packages (such as a week in Hawaii!) followed by a great time dancing to The Overcommitments.
Faith and Fatherhood Night • November 9, 2018
We were overwhelmed with the response to our Fatherhood Event this year with over 140 dads in attendance. The evening began with Mass where Monsignor Sheeran reminded us that the best way to be a good father is to “love your children’s mother.” Mass was followed by fellowship, dinner, and a keynote by Michael Matheson Miller who spoke of our call to fatherhood as the same call of Adam in Genesis to guard, serve and teach.

Fall Concert Series • November 14 & 15, 2018
The Marin Catholic Performing Arts Department presented its Fall Concert Series with the music of The 2000s. The concerts featured performances by Contemporary Music, Chamber & Jazz Ensembles, and Music Tech. Students from all grades performed 2-3 songs that they had been finessing during first semester, including pieces that were original compositions.

Marin Catholic’s Annual Scholarship Dinner at Embassy Suites brought together benefactors and students to help foster their ongoing relationship. For the 2018/2019 school year, Marin Catholic awarded over $1.9 million in tuition assistance to make sure a Catholic education is available to all those who seek it. Auction & Fashion Show • March 9, 2019
Love Shines Through - Marin Catholic’s Annual Auction and Fashion Marin Catholic held its annual Auction and Fashion Show on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the Exhibition Hall, Marin Center in San Rafael. The luncheon and dinner shows featured 300 students models, performers, photographers and dancers. The event also included a live, silent, and online auction, in addition to a marketplace comprised of local designers who donated a portion of their sales to Marin Catholic. The event raised funds for student programs including a Fund-A-Need, which raised over $100,000 to support improvements and new equipment for our visual and performing arts program and our ever-growing retreat programs. The investment in these important programs helps to create more opportunities for our students, encouraging a love of learning, artistic development and spiritual growth. We are grateful to our many supporters who make our mission a reality!

Spring Musical: Cinderella! • March 28-31, 2019
The wildly successful Spring Musical, Cinderella, was a beautiful product of the efforts of talented actors, singers, dancers, and the brilliant design and tech team. 61 students participated in this performance and managed to blow away their audiences show after show with their humorous, skilled, and ingenious adaptation of the classic fairytale. The intricate sets and outstanding special effects were all hand-crafted and designed by students, and Cinderella herself (Giordana Simurdiak ‘20) made her own gowns. We are incredibly excited to see more great things from our growing Performing Arts Department.
Spring Concert Series • April 10-11, 2019
On April 10 and 11 the Performing Arts Department presented their Spring Concert Series: The Grammys. The concert series featured a wide variety of ensembles over two nights with a wide range of music from Taylor Swift to Aerosmith. Highlights included a resplendent choral rendition of the Lion King and Elton John song Circle of Life. On the electronic side, Music Production student Rupert McIntosh (apolloeleven), delivered a high energy two song set of original hip hop songs, composing both the beats and lyrics. Both nights featured a series of beautiful original compositions written by the Contemporary Music ensembles. After the spring concert, the student ensembles recorded their favorite songs from their respective repertoire, while Music Production students mixed and mastered them.
Volunteer Thank You Mass and Breakfast May 9, 2019
The Advancement office celebrated our volunteers with a special Mass in the MC Chapel and breakfast in the President’s Library. Exiting senior parents were recognized and thanked for their time and dedication to Marin Catholic. This springtime event is MC’s way of thanking the many volunteers for their gifts of time and talent that benefit our students and community!
MC Live & Drama Showcase • May 16-18, 2019
MC audiences witnessed the creativity of MC’s performing artists as they took the stage for the Drama Showcase featuring the E and F block acting students, and MC Live, for MC’s version of Saturday Night Live. 70 MC students took on all the production roles, both on and offstage including producer, director, actor, band coordinator, film crew, lighting designer and many more!
Graduates and Families Gather for Baccalaureate Mass Marin Catholic students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends gathered for the traditional Baccalaureate Mass held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Mill Valley on May 29, 2019. This year, the graduating class included 18 legacy families.

Alumni at Graduation On May 30, 2019 at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Marin Catholic’s Class of 2019 received their diplomas. Supporting our graduates were over 30 alumni who led their procession at graduation. These alumni represented many graduating classes, some from our graduating classes in the ’60s! The Alumni at Graduation is an annual tradition which has grown over the years and invites Marin Catholic alumni to represent their class by walking at the graduation ceremony. The Reverend James T. Tarantino Distinguished Teacher Award Presented to John Paul Manfredi! The Monsignor James T. Tarantino Distinguished Teacher Award is given annually to the teacher who, voted by the seniors, best exemplifies the characteristics of inspiration, compassion, and dedication in furthering the mission of our school. To qualify for this award, a teacher must be on staff for at least four years and not have been a previous recipient. This award is made possible through the generosity of the Tom and Patti Cook Family (Jessica Baker ’98, Jaclyn Condo ’00, and Julie Donohoe ’01).
Nancy Cook Retires After 34 Years
Nancy Cook, beloved counselor retired at the end of the 2018-19 school year after 34 years at Marin Catholic. A huge asset to the counseling department and the entire school community for so many years - she will be missed dearly! Nancy is enjoying her retirement at her home at the beach and with her two pups and sister.
In Memoriam John P McNamara ’49 passed away on February 24, 2019, at the age of 87. Mr. McNamara was in the last graduating class of Saint Anselm’s High School in 1949, which would become Marin Catholic. John was humbly proud of the fact that he suggested the name “Marin Catholic” to one of the nuns and that it was rumored to be chosen as the name for the new high school. The Mass of Christian Burial was held for Jeanie McCarthy Graustein ‘62 on January 22, 2019, at St. Thomas More Chapel on the Yale college campus. Jeanie is remembered by her family as a caring, loving and devoted parent, community member, naturalist, artist and faith leader who was passionate about her vocation of Catholic environmental justice. She worked for over 20 years with the Archdiocese Office of Hartford, Connecticut in the office of Catholic Social Justice where she developed the environmental justice education program. Jeannie was also a lay member of the United States Catholic Bishop’s task force on environmental justice. Bishop Peter Rosazza, Archbishop of Hartford, who gave the Homily at her mass, stated, “[Jeanie], whose goodness was so evident that you realized you were in the presence of a great woman in whom the Lord Jesus was so actively present”. Jeanie is survived by her husband Bill, her children Lisa and Meg and several nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Marin Catholic remembers our deceased alumni and prays for them and their families. 1993 Wildcat Football Team
On Saturday, October 27, the Athletics Department in conjunction with the Alumni Office welcomed back the 1993 MC Football team. The team was undefeated and NCS/Redwood Empire 2A Football Champions. It was a beautiful day celebrating the players, coaches and families that were present, as well as those who are no longer with us. Thank you to the following alumni who came to celebrate!

1966 Wildcat Baseball Team
In April, the 1966 Wildcat Varsity Baseball Team returned to campus for a team reunion and to watch the 2019 Varsity Wildcats take on Maria Carillo from Santa Rosa. The 1966 team was MCAL Co-Champion as well as TOC Champions! According to sporting reports at the time, the team was “The Cinderella Team” of the Marin Tourney of Champions, with the poorest record among the entries. With Coach Gary Hughes at the helm, the team managed to come from behind and win the 3rd Annual Tournament of Champions Tournament beating Lincoln High of San Jose 4-0 at Albert Park in San Rafael. Coach Hughes, along with 1966 team members Bob Lombardi ‘66, Bob Nelson ‘66, Tom Fair 67, Tony Quadros ‘66, Bing Foster ‘67, Joe Adams ‘66, enjoyed a great game, BBQ and many memories as they cheered on the Wildcats. In addition, Coach Hughes, whose post MC days include an extensive career in professional baseball as an executive and a scout for teams such as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, also gave a post-game pep talk with our players.
MC Football on the Move!
The Marin Catholic varsity football coaching staff traveled to Atlanta in February to see MC alumnus Jared Goff play in Super Bowl 53. Ken Peralta (MC head coach 2003 – 2009) invited Head Coach Mazi Moayed and the staff to participate in Super Fest Atlanta on Saturday prior to the game. Along with Coach Moayed, Coaches CJ Johnson, Art Robinson, and Philip Rice took part in Super Fest Atlanta, an inclusive football and cheer team clinic for children with developmental disabilities. The purpose of Super Fest is to provide an enjoyable experience to individuals with disabilities and their families, enabling everyone to participate in the excitement of Super Bowl weekend. The Matthew Foundation runs Super Fest camps every year on the Saturday before the Super Bowl. Members of the Georgia Tech football team assisted with the skills camp. The LA Rams cheer team participated as well. Thomas Dimitroff, General Manager of the Atlanta Falcons, spent the day helping out. Everyone had fun! 16—MARIN CATHOLIC
Alumni Reunions Class of 1958 Reunions
The Class of 1958 gathered for lunch in celebration of their 60th Reunion on March 23 at The Club Restaurant at McInnes Park Golf Center in San Rafael. The event brought together 26 alumni for a wonderful reunion of some of MC’s best. There was an abundance of conversations, shared memories and laughter for all in attendance. The event also marked a special tribute to those classmates who are deceased and a toast and prayers were raised to past friendships. A sincere thank you to Pat Carroll ’58 who tirelessly worked to gather classmates and plan this special reunion. The Class of 1958 also gathered for a second alumni reunion in just one year! The second gathering, nicknamed “Part 2” was held at Marin Catholic and included over 25 class members for a lunch in the President’s Library and a tour of campus. The highlight of the event was Pat Carroll ‘58, entertaining his classmates with a musical performance in our state of the art Music Room! Pat wowed attendees with his piano talent! Great memories were made and shared and we look forward to seeing the Class of ‘58 on campus again soon!
Class of 1974 Reunion
The Class of 1974 celebrated their 45th Reunion on Saturday, June 15th at the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco. The reunion was attended by 70 alumni and their guests and the evening included a delicious gourmet dinner, drinks, many photo memories, music, trivia and prizes. Greg Faulkner of the Class of ’74 writes, “My classmates were blasted back in time to vintage 1974. Laughter and smiles were everywhere and all evening long A great time was had by all.”
Class of 1988 Reunion
The Class of 1998 held its 20-year reunion on Saturday, November 24 at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael. Over 90 classmates and guests joined in the celebration. The evening was spent catching up with classmates, sharing stories and memories about their years at MC.
Class of 2008 Reunion A Five Day Reunion
The Class of 1969 celebrated their 50th Golden Diploma weekend on August 16-20, Their weekend included a Friday evening cocktail reception at Marin Joe’s and concluded with a mass and brunch at the Carmelite Monastery in San Rafael. The highlight of the weekend was the Golden Diploma ceremony presided by President Tim Navone in the St. Francis Chapel at Marin Catholic. 60 Golden Diplomas were awarded to alumni attending. The ceremony was followed by an elegant dinner and dancing in MC’s own Saint John Paul II Student Center that was transformed for the event and even included a juke box with music selections of the day! It was a great weekend to rekindle friendships, share memories and remember those who could not attend. Congratulations to the Class of ‘69 on their 50th Golden Diploma!
The Class of 2008 marked their 10-year reunion at a gathering during Thanksgiving weekend at Reed and Greenough in San Francisco. Classmates gathered to reminisce, play pool and shuffleboard, and enjoy a special dessert!

Laura Berguer ‘09 graduated this year from Vermont Law School
with a Masters in Environmental Law and Policy with a focus in International Trade. She spent the 2019 winter in Washington, D.C. as a Government Relations Intern with the American Apparel and Footwear Association. There she drafted letters to foreign governments regarding labor and human rights issues, and compiled 20 country sourcing resource profiles for American brands interested in manufacturing outside of China. This fall she starts an accelerated 1-year Sustainable Innovation MBA program at the University of Vermont where she will focus on sustainable supply chain management for apparel and footwear brands. Afterwards, she would like to work for a sustainably focused brand in vendor compliance. This summer she is an intern for Coyuchi, a Marin County organic home textiles company, where she will conduct sustainable packaging research as well as working at Sports Basement in Novato. Laura is an amateur runner having finished 15 races, the Spartan Trifecta in 2016, 1 triathlon, and is set to finish her first marathon in October. She’s also taken up scuba diving, sky diving, and acrylic painting as hobbies.

Suzanne Viera ’10 is an environmental consultant working
primarily in wetland ecology and marine project permitting. In a note sent to Advanced Placement Environmental Sciences (APES) teacher, Erik Schmitz, she writes, “[Your] influence through the APES course has impacted my life, from choosing to study ecology and environmental studies at UCSB to volunteering for a year of service with the Washington Conservation Corps in 2017 to getting my current position as an environmental consultant specializing in wetland science.” After moving to Seattle, Suzanne earned her Wetland Science and Management certificate from the University of Washington. In her note to Mr. Schmitz, Suzanne expressed her gratitude to MC for raising awareness of the environmental studies to students. Congratulations, Suzanne, on your many achievements and we look forward to hearing more about your work in the future!
Ashley Stark ‘05
A family illness lead to a thirteen year educational journey for Ashley Stark ‘05. The quest began with acceptance to UC Davis and graduation in 2009 with a BS In Neurobiology. The next stop in the journey was Boston for a Master of Science at Tufts University. After a work opportunity at Stanford to study Autism, the journey led her to Washington, D.C. with a Medical Degree from Georgetown University in 2018. Today Ashley is doing her residency at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina in pediatrics specializing in Neonatology. Congratulations to Ashley - MC is proud of this very accomplished alumna and her journey to make a difference for children and medicine!
Genevieve Finn ‘17 is pursuing an English degree with a
concentration in Creative Writing at UCLA, but has taken time off of her studies to work and travel the world. Since graduating from Marin Catholic, she has solo traveled through Mexico for two and a half months, hiked Scotland’s 96-mile West Highland Way, hitchhiked the length of Luzon in twenty-four hours, and traveled via container ship from Hong Kong to Singapore with a crew of Romanian sailors. She is now living in Sydney, Australia, where she just completed a monthlong internship with the New York Times’ Australia Bureau, and is now interning with GQ Australia. Her bylines can be found in both of the aforementioned publications, as well as in Language Magazine and Tough to Tame. She will continue her travels this Fall by studying in Africa at the University of Ghana. Congratulations to Genevieve, and we look forward to reading more of her journalism and hearing about her time abroad!

Filling the GAP
In 2018, a new alumni program was launched by two recent alumni, Les Smith ‘09 and Gavin Hession ‘12. The Guiding Alumni Program (GAP) is designed to help alumni create learning and career education and opportunities for our current Marin Catholic students. The goal is to expose our students to potential careers before they select their college and majors.
