Dear Marin Catholic Families, Alumni, and Friends, A year ago, no one could have imagined how different our world would be. Mask wearing is now normal and new phrases like social distancing, 6-feet apart, and Zoom are now staples in our vocabulary. We have a different view on toilet paper, working from home, and Purell. Because 2020 has been a challenging year, we have decided to shift our resources to helping COVID-affected families with tuition assistance and preparing our campus for safety and social distancing. One of the ways we are accomplishing this is to forego our 2020 Marin Catholic Magazine. Instead, we are providing this online 2019-2020 Annual Report to thank our very generous donors and benefactors. You will also see as you read through the pages that we are highlighting the wonderfully resilient Class of 2020. If you didn’t get a chance to see their graduation (the only seated graduation in the Bay Area that we know of!), visit marincatholic.org/2020. While change is afoot, what remains the same is the strength of the Marin Catholic mission. While the ground ahead is unknown, faith and prayer are with us and we know our Wildcat spirit will lead us through. Mission
Marin Catholic is a Roman Catholic college preparatory school serving young men and women. Consistent with our Gospel values, we are committed to the education of the whole person. GIVING AT MARIN CATHOLIC Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts every year and we rely on its support to provide the rich academic and extracurricular offerings that define the Marin Catholic experience. We depend on our entire community–current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty/staff, and friends–to support MC through the Annual Fund each and every year. Tuition Revenue alone does not cover the full cost of an MC education, leaving an approximate $3,400 per student gap and we look to the generosity of our community to provide unrestricted dollars to the operating budget that impacts everything at MC: • Helping MC meet its most urgent needs • Providing support for faculty/staff and curricular development • Enhancing programs in the arts and athletics • Allowing Campus Ministry to offer life-changing student retreats • Funding tuition assistance • Keeping the lights on • And much more!
Special Events & Grand Sponsors
Special events throughout the year raise funds for programs benefiting our students, increase awareness and engagement, and provide opportunities for our community to celebrate together. Directed Gifts
Directed gifts support specific programs and initiatives at MC, such as scholarships and financial aid and other identified areas of need.
Endowment
Gifts to the endowment provide for the financial sustainability of MC now and into the future. Endowed funds provide a stable revenue stream to the school’s operating budget each year while keeping the principal intact.
Campaigns
Capital campaigns help MC evolve our facilities so that the campus enhances 21st-century learning and student life. The Dino Ghilotti Motta Stadium Complex marked the completion of the 20-year, $32 million vision plan to update our facilities. The first step in our new 20-year Internal Vision Plan, opened the new St. Anselm Hall in November 2020, featuring a Theater, Counseling Center, Campus Ministry Department, and our new Principled Entrepreneurship Institute.
Planned Giving
Planned gifts provide MC with support in the future while allowing donors to attend to the financial needs of their families. Bequests and gifts of retirement accounts or life insurance policies are straightforward ways to support MC with a planned gift. 2019-2020 Event Highlights
Black Box Performance • November 6, 2019
Black Box Theatre Club, a new performance opportunity for students who are already involved in extracurriculars that conflict with mainstage rehearsals, debuted in 2019 with “All in the Timing,” a hilarious and poignant series of scenes by David Ives. Over the 2019-2020 school year, over 35 students were involved in Black Box as actors, technicians, assistant directors, playwrights, graphic and scenic designers, and artists. Although initial plans for a live performance in the spring had to be cancelled, students pivoted and wrote an original piece about the pitfalls and surprising joys of distance learning. Students’ creativity and initiative will continue with a fall production of entirely student-written new works, with rising Senior Merrit O’Keefe co-producing and assisting with the editing and writing process.
Fall Play: Ladies of the Jury • October 24-27, 2019
Last year’s fall production “Ladies of the Jury” traveled back nearly a century to a 1929 courtroom, where Mrs. Gordon is charged with murdering her husband. Tensions build as evidence is presented and challenged. In the jury room, a lone juror - skeptical and persuasive - may hold the keys to the verdict. This production was a fun challenge because the original show was written in the 1920’s. The costumes, set, language, and music needed to be historically accurate. There were three acts and even included a 45 minute immersive pre-show where the audience had an exclusive chance to interact with the characters. The cast and crew successfully brought the 1920’s to MC. The project also included a collaboration with Senior Julia Walker, using her prestigious Marin Catholic Junior Fellowship studying set design, to design the set for this fall production. Julia spent the summer of 2019 researching set design, participating in a professional internship at Marin Shakespeare Company, creating a proposal for the “Ladies of the Jury” set, and presenting her findings to the MC faculty panel. The outcome was beautiful and enhanced the aesthetic of the 1920’s production. Julia will continue her theatre studies at Fordham University majoring in Design and Production.

Father, Special Guest and Daughter Dance • September 14, 2019
Girls, their fathers, and special guests kicked up their boots and danced the night away at the Western Round-Up Father-Daughter Dance. The Saint John Paul II Student Center was transformed into the MC Corral for a fun night of dancing, delicious treats, and always a fun raffle! This time-honored tradition is one where memories are made!
Alumni Homecoming • October 5, 2019
Marin Catholic welcomed back alumni for the annual Alumni Homecoming Beer & Bratwurst event at the Saint John Paul II Student Center. Alumni, their families, and friends gathered on the Ghilotti Family Observation Deck for an exciting football game (and victory!) against Terra Linda High School and halftime festivities. This event is a great way for old classmates and friends to gather on campus and share memories of their time at MC. Thank you, Brendan Moylan, and the Marin Brewing Company for their generous in-kind support of this event.
Faith and Fatherhood Night • October 11, 2019
We were overwhelmed with the response to our third annual Fatherhood Event with over 125 dads in attendance. The evening began with Mass where Father Ginter reminded us that the best way to be a good father is to “love your children’s mother.” Mass was followed by fellowship, dinner, and a lively keynote conversation between Tim Navone and Mr. Tom Dunn as they discussed their thoughts and experiences as fathers in support of those we love. Mr. Dunn’s guiding criteria in his work is to create a balance of values that address his work, spiritual life, family, and community needs.
MC Gala • November 7, 2019
Over 400 MC parents, past parents, alumni, and friends gathered for cocktails and sampling cuisines from some of the top chefs and vintners in the Bay Area at our fall fundraiser, the MC Gala. Over $150,000 raised in funds directly benefited Marin Catholic students and programs! The night included a bucket drawing of 5 exciting packages followed by a great time dancing to The Overcommitments.
Fall Concert Series: Tribute • November 19-21, 2019
The Performing Arts Department hosted the Fall Concert Series: Tribute. The concert series featured a variety of ensembles over three nights, in tribute to artists like Frankie Valli and Mozart, alongside original student compositions. Performing classes included Contemporary Music 1 & 2, Chamber Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Music Production 2.

The MC Performing Arts Department presented their winter music showcase at HopMonk Tavern in Novato. The showcase featured performances by many student formed groups including Jazz, Rock and Electronic.
Boosters Crab Feed • January 25, 2020
Another sold-out event! It was an incredible night of community, fun, and abundant and delicious crab along with traditional Italian dishes. We are very grateful to the Figone family and all of our wonderful volunteers for helping us carry on this long-standing MC tradition! In addition to great food and fellowship, the evening was also an opportunity to celebrate our Athletic programs and Athletic Boosters.
Mother, Special Guest and Son Dance • February 1, 2020
In February, over 450 moms, sons and special guests enjoyed Marin Catholic’s 2020 Valentine’s Ball Mother-Son Dance. This elegant and special evening included a delicious dinner, a packed dance floor, the senior rose ceremony, the freshman “first dance” and many other special MC traditions. Our parent community makes these events possible for our families and helps make MC the special place it is!
Spring 2020 Virtual Performing Arts Projects Since the Performing Arts students weren’t able to perform their spring productions live due to the pandemic, they decided to put together something special to showcase the department’s hard work through working together virtually.

Event Highlights Continued Scholarship Dinner • February 10, 2020
Marin Catholic’s Annual Scholarship Dinner was held on campus this year and brought together benefactors and students to foster their ongoing relationship. It was a memorable evening filled with fellowship and gratitude. For the 19-20 school year, Marin Catholic awarded over $2.1 million in tuition-assistance to ensure that a Marin Catholic education is accessible to all those who seek it. Auction & Fashion Show - Heart & Soul • March 7, 2020
Marin Catholic held its annual Spring Auction and Fashion Show on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Exhibition Hall, Marin Center in San Rafael. The luncheon and dinner shows featured 300 student models, a live student band, photographers, and dancers. The event also included a live, silent, and online auction, in addition to a marketplace comprised of local designers who donated a portion of their sales to Marin Catholic. The event raised funds for student programs including a Fund-A-Need, which raised over $90,000 to support programs such as our ever-growing Campus Ministry program, resources for our Counseling department, and systems to launch our new Principled Entrepreneurship Institute that is housed in our new St. Anselm Hall. The investment in these important programs helps to create more opportunities for our students and is an investment in the personal, creative, social, educational, and career growth of each student at Marin Catholic. We are grateful to our many supporters who make our mission a reality!
Volunteer Thank You Mass • May 17, 2020
With the shelter-in-place orders and safety protocols due to COVID-19, the Advancement office celebrated our community of volunteers with a special virtual Mass in the MC Chapel. Father Andrew Ginter offered prayers in thanksgiving for all our volunteers and Sandy Starkey, Manager of Community and Alumni Relations, contributed with closing remarks on the giving spirit of the MC community. This springtime event, although different this year, is Marin Catholic’s way of thanking the many volunteers for their gifts of time and talent that benefit our students and community!

Congratulations to the Class of 2020! After months of working with Marin County Public Health, Marin County Office of Education, and navigating evolving regulations, we kept the promise made to the Class of 2020 at their “NOT your Graduation” virtual event in May. We brought them back together on our campus one last time to celebrate their graduation. On August 1, with two identical, back to back, socially distanced Baccalaureate prayer services and Commencement ceremonies, the Class of 2020 received their graduation blessing, heard words of encouragement and perspective in speeches by Lindsey Bell and Jake Chuharski, President Tim Navone, and Prinicipal Chris Valdez, and received their long-awaited diplomas. Even though things looked different this year given health and safety restrictions, the message of hope, perseverance, and faith resonated throughout both ceremonies. Congratulations to the 22 Alumni Legacy families in the Class of 2020. Legacy families are those with graduates whose parents (and/or grandparents) graduated from MC. Although we couldn’t all be together this year for the annual Baccalaureate Mass, we were happy that many alumni family members, in addition to parents and grandparents, celebrated with us virtually. The Reverend James T. Tarantino Distinguished Teacher Award Presented to the Entire Faculty & Staff at Marin Catholic! The Monsignor James T. Tarantino Distinguished Teacher Award is given annually to the teacher who, voted by the seniors, best exemplifies the characteristics of inspiration, compassion, and dedication in furthering the mission of our school. To qualify for this award, a teacher must be on staff for at least four years and not have been a previous recipient. Because of the extraordinary obstacles our school encountered with the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee decided this year’s award should go to the entire Faculty for the incredible job they did shifting to distance learning. Our 758 students, along with our faculty, logged an impressive 4300+ class meetings on Zoom covering over 250 classes. This award is made possible through the generosity of the Tom and Patti Cook Family (Jessica Baker ’98, Jaclyn Condo ’00, and Julie Donohoe ’01).
Lori Collins Retires After 23 Years With great gratitude, MC bids a farewell to Lori Collins, MC Class of 1973, who has retired after 23 years of service to the school community. In Admissions, Lori’s was often the first voice heard and the first face seen by prospective families, and the great classes Teri Hanley and Lori shepherded into our school are the best proof possible that they were indeed the right people to make MC’s first impression. Lori and Teri knew and loved every student. Today MC thrives, and they are a huge reason why… At the front desk, Lori was likely the first person to greet our students as they arrived, and the last to send them off at day’s end. Perfect book-ends. Who would not want to go to a school that lets you check-in and out with Ms. Collins? In between students’ comings and goings, Lori was their School Nurse; their pre-Dean-visit host (and no doubt understanding presence); the recoverer of lost locker combinations; the bearer of notes and deliverer of messages; the first to any emergency, greeter of ambulances (and probably the person best informed about what the medicos need to know...); the first, loving but firm, line of support for overwrought or confused or confounding and concerned Moms and Dads. And for her colleagues, Lori’s desk was a warm, welcoming, funny, well-informed, energy-charging stop. Students, parents, MC staff…all were lucky to have Lori there. Leaving the job and the place is bittersweet; after a job well done at a place you love, it would have to be. But Lori should enjoy resting on her laurels. Alumni Reunions Class of 1964 Reunion
The Class of 1964 celebrated their 55th reunion on Saturday, November 9, 2019, with a dinner at the Club Restaurant at McInnis Park in San Rafael. 36 alumni and their guests enjoyed cocktails and dinner while rekindling old friendships, sharing memories of the fun times at MC and catching up on one another’s lives. Deceased classmates were remembered with a special tribute and a poster showing their senior photos.

The Class of 2009 celebrated their 10-year reunion with a private gathering at Servino’s Restaurant in Tiburon on Saturday, November 30, 2019. Over 70 classmates and guests gathered to share good food, drinks, and memories of the time at MC! Class of ‘09 alumnae Kaleigh Morgan and Anna Consani planned and hosted this fun event!

The Class of 1979 celebrated their 40th reunion on Saturday, October 5, 2019. The day started with Beer and Brats at Marin Catholic’s annual Homecoming event. Members of the Class of 1979 enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon on the Ghilotti Brothers Observation Deck at the Saint John Paul II Student Center watching the Cats football victory over Terra Linda. The celebration continued with an evening reunion party at the Inn at Marin. It was a great weekend of celebrating friendships, memories, and the Wildcat spirit! Here are a few Wildcats we’ve heard from: Congratulations to Lauren Barry Tolles ‘02 for winning two Gold medals for her design work in this year’s Kitchen & Bath Design News’ 2020 Design Awards. Over 200 projects were evaluated in multiple areas including aesthetic appeal, functionality, and selection of colors and finishes. Lauren, founder of Maison Birmingham in Birmingham, Michigan, received top honors for her Georgian Colonial and English Manor designs in the competition. Lauren is also a graduate of Duke University and received her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Michigan.
Susan Dawson ‘17, daughter of Rob Dawson ‘80, is currently a
third-year nursing student at Northeastern University in Boston and is one of several nursing students in the country stepping up to the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic health crisis. Susan works 36 hours a week in Mass General Hospital Intensive Care Unit and her efforts were spotlighted recently in the News@Northeasterns newsletter. We are very proud of Susan, and other alumni like her, working tirelessly on the front lines of healthcare to serve the very sick and dying. Rich Woodall ‘67 has been honored by the California Coaches
Association (CCA) this year as the recipient of the Jim Brownfield Mentor Award. The award recognizes individuals who positively and significantly support interscholastic athletics and the coaching profession. In addition to his many years of teaching at Marin Catholic, Rich has been training positive coaching for over 20 years and has influenced a generation of athletic coaches in many sports. Congratulations, Rich! The MC and greater Marin community is grateful for your dedication to teaching at all levels!
While working as an Internet and wireless communications engineer with AT&T in Chicago, Patrick McCullough ‘12 completed his Master’s Degree in Applied Mathematics and Data Science from the University of Notre Dame in May 2019. Patrick had previously received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in May 2016 in Electrical Engineering. Patrick’s father, Bob McCullough, former Marin Catholic Board of Regent, says “None of this would be possible without his strong faith perpetuated by the Blessed Mother while working for 3 weeks with the infirmed and disabled at Lourdes France during his junior year.” Congratulations, Patrick on your accomplishments. MC is proud of you!
Former UC Davis women’s water polo player Carmen Eggert ‘09 will be inducted into the 2020 Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in September. Carmen earned three ACWPC All-American honorable mentions, three All-Big West Conference Awards, a pair of first-team nods in 2012 and 2013, earned 5 Big West Conference player of the week awards in the last 3 seasons, and is now ranked 3rd in career goals (189) 3rd in total points (279) 4th in steals (163) and 6th in assists (90). After graduating from UC Davis with a degree in Communications in 2013, Carmen became the first player in the varsity era to earn a spot on the USA Senior National Team. Carmen lives and works in Marin having been the Marin Catholic Boys Water Polo assistant coach, working with MC head coach (and her dad!), Wayne Eggert. Congratulations, Carmen on your many accomplishments and accolades!
Alex Murray ‘19, current scholarathlete on the football team at the University of California, Berkeley, was recognized this past fall for his outstanding scholastic achievement. The recognition from UC Berkeley further noted, “We are very proud of Alex and acknowledge the role Marin Catholic has played in preparing him both academically and athletically.”
Michele Gage Anderson ‘04 and Matt Anderson ‘04 tied the knot! “We reconnected at our 10-year reunion, and have been together for 3 years now. We had a wonderful wedding with many other Marin Catholic friends and my basketball coach, Rick DeMartini, in attendance. We are happily living in the Oakland Hills and look forward to staying involved with Marin Catholic.”
Mr. George Fedoroff ‘63 retired from federal service after 48
years. George worked as an analyst for the Office of Naval Intelligence since October 1971. He has specialized in Soviet/Russian naval programs, operations, doctrine and strategy in support of Navy, Defense and national decision-makers. He has participated in the national estimate process and has briefed senior Pentagon leaders, the National Security Staff, and members of Congress. Designated in 2008 as a Senior Intelligence Officer, he has been the authoritative voice on Russia/Eurasia issues for the Office of Naval Intelligence. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Fedoroff serves as Gunston Middle School PTA President and Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 143. He has been the recipient of many awards in his fields, most recently the Naval Intelligence Professional Commendation the Department of the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Medal. Congratulations to George on a remarkable career and we wish him a happy and healthy retirement. In his note to the Alumni office, he writes “Truly enjoyed the 50th – it was a hoot...I do not want to miss the next reunion for the Class of ’63!”

“All In” at Over 98% of our students participate in the performing and visual arts programs, which include plays, musical performances, and art shows. During the 19-20 school year, our talented students created over 50 short films, led over 150 elementary parochial students in a clay outreach program and photographed, edited, and uploaded over 9,000 photos to our photo gallery.
Community events and initiatives, supported by our parent and family volunteers, raised over $400,000 and benefited student programs for every grade level! Over 500 parent and family volunteers supported community, athletic, campus ministry, and visual and performing arts events! Last year, 89% of current families participated in fundraising efforts that directly impacted academic and extracurricular opportunities for our students.
Lead by Director of Catholic Formation & Integration Ryan Mayer, the Parent Campus Ministry Book Group read the Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis via Zoom with over 25 parent and community members participating in weekly Zoom meetings throughout the spring. 24—MARIN CATHOLIC
a Glance Over 85% of MC students participate in athletic programs and benefit from parent and community volunteers who work the snack shack, drive to games, prepare meals, and cheer on our student-athletes. From the class of 2020, 16 athletes signed and intend to compete in a sport at the college level including Notre Dame, LMU, Syracuse, and USC, and, for the 3rd year in a row, a student-athlete will be attending Harvard.
This past spring, over 100 cubic yards of concrete was poured for the foundation of the new St. Anselms Hall, opening in Fall 2020. Thanks to the generosity of our benefactors, Marin Catholic was able to pivot and adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic without missing a beat. Starting in August, students returned for Kairos Days so they could deepen their relationship with God while reconnecting with their classmates. The Kairos Day Program brought socially-distanced cohorts of 12 students to outdoor spaces on campus to hear talks on spiritual formation and racial justice, while also participating in activities like Mass, adoration, and school spirit.

Kairos: “a propitious moment for decision or action”. By Caitlyn Holmstrom Over the last few months, the community of Marin Catholic has embodied this notion by recognizing a need for personal growth in its students and acting upon it. In an innovative action to address social justice, MC has initiated conversations in the form of ‘Kairos’ days during which pods of students visit school, in person, to have meaningful conversations about how to respond in the face of injustice in their community and society. They have learned how to apply their faith to be active allies towards marginalized communities. The Kairos days take place on Wednesdays for a few hours at a time. Students listen to talks by various members of the Marin Catholic community and meet in small groups to reflect upon the topic at hand. The implementation of Kairos days has broken the monotony of self-isolation and has given students a chance to reflect on their person and society in community with one another. Paris Marquis, a Junior, says “I love Kairos! It has allowed me to connect with some amazing people and show them how much God truly loves us all!” Topics range from racial justice to morality and have allowed students to develop their perspectives-an especially pertinent thing to do in the face of the racial injustices plaguing America today. Throughout it all, students have learned to apply these lessons of humanity to their own actions and to develop insight and empathy. To supplement the Kairos days, students were encouraged to read ‘Just Mercy’, a novel illustrating racial injustice in America’s judicial system. During one of these days, art teacher Mr. Carpenter gave an emotional account of racism he experienced during his childhood. Its effects remain with him today. During his address, he described an instance in which his best friend sang a racist song about him in front of his house. He remembered feeling betrayed and confused at his actions-this instance of racism defined his reality as an African-American in a racially prejudiced society for the rest of his life. This shared perspective was followed by a period of reflection while many of the students could meditate on their privilege and role as an ally and justice-seeker. The community of Marin Catholic has been enriched through Kairos days. Students have been able to develop their empathy and connect with each other in ways that were possibly taken for granted prior to Covid-19.
