Mission Dear Marin Catholic Families, Alumni, and Friends, I have never been so proud of where our school stands right now. Financially sound, spiritually focused, physically beautiful, first-rate teachers and colleagues, and an unparalleled Wildcat spirit.

GIVING AT MARIN CATHOLIC Annual Fund

The Annual Fund provides MC with vital unrestricted support to our operating budget each and every year. The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts and all programs at MC benefit from the funds raised. We are able to provide a robust academic and extracurricular experience at MC because the Annual Fund helps us bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of an MC education. We ask all families to pledge their support to the Annual Fund prior to exploring other avenues of philanthropic support.

Special Events & Grand Sponsors

Special events throughout the year raise funds for programs benefitting our students, increase awareness and engagement, and provide opportunities for our community to celebrate together. Grand Sponsors make a special underwriting gift that supports events throughout the year above and beyond their Annual Fund donation.

Directed Gifts

Directed gifts support specific programs and initiatives at MC, such as scholarships and financial aid and other identified areas of need. Last year, directed gifts provided the funds necessary to build two sound-proof recording and practice spaces in the music room.

Endowment

Gifts to the endowment provide for the financial sustainability of MC now and into the future. Endowed funds provide a stable revenue stream to the school’s operating budget each year while keeping the principal intact.

Campaigns

Campaigns fund projects essential to the growth and development of MC beyond our operating budget. Capital campaigns help MC evolve our facilities so that the campus supports and enhances 21st century learning and student life.

Planned Giving

Planned gifts provide MC with support in the future while allowing donors to attend to the financial needs of their families. Bequests and gifts of retirement accounts or life insurance policies are straightforward ways to support MC with a planned gift. 2016-2017 Event Highlights

Father Daughter Dance September 10, 2016

Over 450 girls and their fathers danced the night “Under the Sea” at the annual Father Daughter Dance. From the fun decorations, including a giant balloon octopus, to the food ranging from a fresh sushi bar to delicious desserts, the Father Daughter Dance was truly a night to remember. You could really “sea” that everyone was having a great time as they enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with their dads.

Golf Classic

Alumni Homecoming September 24, 2016

Marin Catholic welcomed back over 100 Wildcat alumni for the annual Alumni Homecoming Beer & Bratwurst event. Alumni, their families, and friends gathered on the Ghilotti Brothers Observation Deck to watch a Wildcat victory against Tam High School. Thank you to Brendan Moylan and the Marin Brewing Company for their generous in-kind support of this event.

Over 140 Wildcat golfers hit the links at the Meadow Club in Fairfax for the 45th Annual Marin Catholic Boosters Golf Classic. With temperatures nearing 100 degrees, golfers were treated to plenty of hydration and nourishment on the course by local restaurants.

The tournament concluded with cocktails, dinner, and an awards ceremony in the clubhouse! This great community event raises funds for ALL MC Athletic teams.

Over 400 MC parents, past parents, alumni and friends gathered for cocktails and sampling cuisines from some of the top chefs and vintners in the Bay Area at our fall fundraiser, the MC Gala.

Over $110,000 raised in funds directly benefited Marin Catholic students and programs. The night included a bucket drawing of five exciting packages (such as a week in Hawaii!) followed by a great time dancing to a DJ!

Fall Concert Series

Winter Play

November 16-17, 2016

November 3-6, 2016

The Performing Arts Department sold out both nights of their Fall Concert Series: Soundtracks. The concert series featured 24 acts over two nights with a variety of music from Pantera to Mozart. Highlights included a beautiful choral rendition of “Pure Imagination” from the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In addition the Jazz Band performed the soundtrack of the show Treme, featuring the music of New Orleans artists such as Rebirth Brass Band, Trombone Shorty and Louis Armstrong.

Marin Catholic’s Fall play featured a talented cast of nearly 30 students performing William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The MC production (set in the here and now, as a twist), inspired the actors to explore modern problems through a story first told more than 400 years ago! The cast presented through dance, sword fights, rap, and vibrant phrase, the story about two lovers whose deaths will end a long-time family feud.

Grandparents’ Day

President’s Dinner

Marin Catholic welcomed our grandparents and special friends to MC’s annual Thanksgiving Mass & reception hosted by President Tim Navone and Principal Chris Valdez in the Saint John Paul II Student Center. Marin Catholic’s long-standing annual tradition recognizes the unique love that exists between grandparents and grandchildren. We are proud to host this special event where we celebrate, honor, and remember the special people who support our students.

Marin Catholic recognizes its generous President’s Club Level benefactors ($6,000 or more) annually at the President’s Dinner held at the Buckeye Roadhouse in Mill Valley. Mother Son Dance February 25, 2017

In February, over 400 moms and their sons attended the annual Mother Son Dance and the Saint John Paul II Student Center was transformed into a Monte Carlo Casino and dancing venue! Many longstanding traditions were shared, including the first dance between senior boys and their moms.

Boosters Crab Feed January 28, 2017

Over 150 guests dined on delicious shrimp cocktail, pasta, and of course, an abundance of crab generously donated and deliciously prepared by Darcy and Don Tarantino ( Torey ‘13). The evening was marked by the launch of the Kate Graham ‘16 Athletic Scholarship which provides tuition assistance to student-athletes with financial need. The scholarship honors the achievements of Kate, the first, and only student in Marin Catholic history to earn a varsity letter in all 12 seasons of her high school career. The event raised more than $10,000 in funds to support student-athletes.

Auction & Fashion Show March 11, 2017

The Auction and Fashion Show, Marin Catholic’s largest single event of the year, was not only a elegant and fun community event, but also highlighted many attributes that make our school special. The event, themed One Starry Night included the support of over 400 parent volunteers and over 280 student models and volunteers, all which helped raise over $250,000 including over $100,000 for our Fund-A-Need which benefits innovation programs, materials and equipment to fund new ways for students to explore, experiment and create.

Scholarship Dinner February 13, 2017

Marin Catholic’s Annual Scholarship Dinner at Embassy Suite brings together benefactors and students to help foster their ongoing relationship. Each year Marin Catholic awards over $1.5 million in tuition assistance to make sure a Catholic education is available to all those who seek it. Those interested in starting a named or anonymous scholarship of $2,500+, please contact Jacqueline Tobe in the Advancement Office.

Last spring, the MC Performing Arts Department produced the musical Little Women! The performance had amazing music and was full of adventure, romance, hilarity and hope. 40 dedicated students participated in the cast, tech crew, and orchestra to create a heartwarming and beautiful production.

Volunteer Thank You Party May 11, 2017

The Advancement and Alumni Office held its annual Volunteer Thank You Party on the Senior Deck of the Saint John Paul II Student Center. The event was attended by over 80 parents, faculty and staff and many of our exiting senior parents were recognized and thanked for their hard work and dedication to Marin Catholic. This springtime event is Marin Catholic’s way of thanking the numerous volunteers for their gifts of time and talent to benefit our students and community!

Spring Concert Series April 6-7, 2017

The Performing Arts Department presented their Spring Concert Series: Past, Present, Future. The two-night concert series featured a variety of acts, highlighting music from Traditional Sacred Music to Jazz Fusion. Contemporary Music brought the future to their sets by incorporating electronic synthesizers into their original compositions and songs like Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely. The audience was also blown away by the action packed Percussion Ensemble’s contemporary performance of Release The Kraken.

Allison Areias-Vogel ‘82, who is currently serving our country as Consul

General in Quebec City Canadian Quebec, was on campus in October to speak to our students about her career in the State Department and to provide information to our students who are considering a career in Law or work in the Foreign Service.

Allison provided three information-packed sessions to our students. It was great to have Allison and her family, on campus inspiring our students with her work.

Alumni Gather at Homecoming!

We were thrilled to welcome back so many alumni on Homecoming weekend on October 7, 2017! Alumni, their families, and friends gathered on the Ghilotti Brothers Observation Deck to watch the Wildcats take on Terra Linda High School. Attendees had a great time mingling with other Alumni, teachers and MC staff as well as enjoying Beer and Bratwurts through the half-time show. A special thank you to Brendan Moylan and the Marin Brewing Company for their generous support of homecoming refreshments.

Alumni News Bernie Schneider Publishes Book Former MC teacher and basketball coach Bernie Schneider (1960-64) has published “Glory and Heartbreak, the History of Intercollegiate Men’s Basketball in the SF Bay Area.”

Lauren Barry Tolles ‘02 Wins Brian Killian’s Rising Star Competition for Design Professionals Lauren Barry Tolles ‘02, an interior designer and architect, is the winner of this year’s Brian Killian’s Rising Star competition for design professionals. The award recognizes rising design professionals in the field of interior design, landscape design and architecture. Lauren is the owner of Maison Birmingham, a design studio and showroom in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. After leaving MC, she studied at Duke University and the University of Michigan. President Navone Visits TCU Alumni & Current Students President Tim Navone recently visited Chancellor Victor Boschini on a recent alumni trip to TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. Navone had the chance to meet with the academic deans from the John V. Roach Honors College, Harris College of Nursing, Neeley School of Business, Pre-Health Studies Institute, as well as meet with the Director of Student Affairs.

After an academic day and tour, Navone treated TCU alumni and current students to dinner at the popular, waterside restaurant Woodshed for a chance to catch up and hear about their “Horned Frog” experience. During the visit, Navone also attended the TCU vs. Kansas football game with Chancellor Boschini and Kansas Chancellor Dr. Douglas Girod.

Wildcat Alumni Tee it up at the MC Golf Classic On September 18, 2017 Wildcat golfers, including many alumni, hit the links at the Meadow Club in Fairfax for the 45th Annual Marin Ctholic Boosters Golf Classic. This year, golfers left their wallets at home as the event shifted from a fundariaser to a community-building day of golf. Golfers enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by Meadow Club, snacks and beverages on the course on the course and a social in the clubhouse following a fun day of golf.

Alumna Adrienne Sherk ‘02 Speaks at Veterans Assembly Adrienne Sherk ’02 was born in San Francisco and raised in Petaluma. After attending St.Vincent’s Elementary School in Petaluma, Adrienne spent her four years of high school at Marin Catholic, where she served on student council and played basketball for the 2002 state championship team. After graduating from Marin Catholic, Adrienne received her appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. While at West Point, Adrienne studied Spanish and systems engineering, trained rigorously as a cadet, and continued to play basketball for the Black Knights. After graduating from West Point in 2006, Adrienne was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army.

She served as a platoon leader, executive officer, and maintenance officer with the 1st Cavalry Division, and deployed to Iraq in 2007 with her unit during “the surge.” After her military service, Adrienne worked in both the private and public sectors, before finding her true passion with a non-profit organization. She currently serves as the Pacific Regional Director for Team Red, White and Blue - a veteran non-profit whose mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans through physical and social activity. Adrienne lives in Half Moon Bay with her husband Corey, and two young children, Avery and Dylan.

Class of 1967: 50 Years

The Class of 1967 gathered to celebrate their 50th reunion the weekend of October 13-15, 2017. Their weekend included a formal dinner on Saturday night, which was attended by over 80 alumni and guests and concluded with their Golden Diploma Mass in Marin Catholic’s Chapel. Monisgor Robert Sheeran presided over the Mass and Principal Chris Valdez provided the keynote speech and conferred the Golden Diploma on the alumni. Thank you to the Class of 1967 for their generous donation to the library at MC. Their thoughtfulness and generosity in support of MC students is appreciated!

The Reverend James T. Tarantino Distinguished Teacher Award Presented to Peter Berkhout!

The Monsignor James T. Tarantino Distinguished Teacher Award is given annually to the teacher who, voted by the seniors, best exemplifies the characteristics of inspiration, compassion, and dedication in furthering the mission of our school. To qualify for this award, a teacher must be on staff for at least four years and not have been a previous recipient.

This award is made possible through the generosity of the Tom and Patti Cook Family (Jessica Baker ’98, Jaclyn Condo ’00, and Julie Donohoe ’01).

Peter Berkhout graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, including a minor in Physics. Mr. Berkhout then completed a semester of sail training and oceanography studies with the Sea Education Association, including a six-week research voyage aboard the Sailing School Vessel Corwith Cramer traveling through the southwest North Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean.

He began his teaching career at his alma mater, Tamalpais High School, in 2002, teaching Physics, Astronomy, Integrated Science, Intermediate Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Precalculus, and serving as the Activities Director. He earned his teaching credential from Dominican University of California in 2005. Mr. Berkhout left Tam in 2009 to go sailing, met his wife while away, and they returned to the Bay Area to run the East Brother Light Station Bed & Breakfast. Mr. Berkhout returned to teaching at MC in the fall of 2012, and has taught Physics, AP Physics, AP Calculus BC, Biology, and currently serves as the Science Department Chair. When not teaching, Mr. Berkhout runs after his children, Dominic (4), Nadia (2), and Joseph (1), and is a captain for the Blue & Gold Fleet.
