EDITOR'S LETTER

ROX MAGAZINE

WELCOME...

T

o a ROX Magazine that, like everything this year, is rather different. Regular readers might already recognise our names, usually adorning ROX’s respective ‘Woman’ and ‘Man’ magazines: Laura McCreddie-Doak (hi!) and Alex Doak (hey there!). Your dynamic husbandand-wife writing duo, thrust together in print, as tightly as March’s marching orders thrust us housebound, whether we liked it or not. But despite drafting this amidst Lockdown 2.0, without the upside of 1.0’s kindly weather, the theme we conjured for a consolidated ROX Magazine back in the summer (probably over a third glass of garden rosé) still feels as poignant: ‘Together’. It’s easy to balk as festive season edges closer – especially coming from a jeweller beloved for throwing such fabulous shindigs. But ‘Together’ needn’t be a word that rankles as we socially distance. Instead, it’s a word that has assumed currency in all the things we’ve previously taken for granted, now so precious. Because togetherness has always been at the heart of the ROX experience… Their doors might be shut for the moment but, if you’re planning to

make that perfect Christmas proposal you can head over to their revamped website and pick the brains of their team of experts who we’ve quizzed on how to co-design the ideal engagement ring. If you want culinary suggestions for that proposal, we’ve also selected the best restaurants from around the country who can deliver Michelinstarred meals to your door. (Some assembly may be required.) Short of actual proximity, the need for connection is keener than ever. Even while ROX parties, summer festivals, nightclubs and all that jazz remain no-no’s, there’s a way in: as superstar DJ and newly signed Zenith watchnerd Carl Cox attests in our exclusive interview. If he can come out of the pandemic with a more melded global fanbase than ever, thanks to his weekly streamed vinyl sets, then – among so many other positives celebrated over the proceeding pages – we can all feel better. (More than can be said after that fifth garden rosé.) See you on the other side, and happy reading.

WATCH ANATOMY

A STUDY IN SCARLET Somewhere along the northern shore of Lake Geneva, the boffins behind closed doors at Hublot’s furtive Metallurgy & Materials laboratory are toying with borderline alchemy: scratchproof gold, sapphire cases and a dazzling rainbow of ceramics, which now comes to bear on the watchmaker’s other form of wizardry – high-octane micro-mechanics. Words by Alex Doak.

Hublot’s trademark vanilla scented rubber strap provides continuity to the worm-gear-inspired ‘screw’ motif of the winding crown.

Forty years ago, Hublot combined gold with rubber for the first time in watchmaking history, forging the brand's 'Art of Fusion' mantra. Since then, scratchproof 'Magic' gold has been pioneered by its in-house foundry, followed by coloured sapphire cases, and now ultra-tough, lightweight zirconium ceramic case components. In a world of chiefly monochrome ceramic, building an in-housemanufactured swatch book of blue, green and red in such short time is formidable.

The skeletonised ‘HUB9011’ calibre – conceived and made entirely in-house, just like Hublot’s tourbillons and Unico chronograph – comprises 270 components. It’s especially notable (besides the power reserve of course!) for its its oil-free silicon escapement, black platinum bridges, plus the patented index-assembly system visible at 2 o’clock, which allows simple rate adjustment.

To create an aesthetic balance with the helical worm gear, just visible at 10 o'clock, the escapement’s balance – oscillating at a ‘ticking’ frequency of 4Hz – has been moved forward to the dial side, in a symmetrical position at 2 o'clock.

To enable power to be transmitted from the horizontally oriented barrel axis to the vertically oriented gear wheels controlling the hours and minutes hands, Hublot’s movement designers deployed a system rarely employed in watchmaking: a helical worm gear, which commutes the direction of kinetic energy by 90º.

Admirable through the sapphire crystal's cylindrical 'bulge' (itself a triumph of form) are seven series-coupled spring-wound barrels. In total, on a single full wind, they offer a full fortnight of autonomous power.

Every surface of the Big Bang MP-11 Red Magic’s ceramic components are fully polished, meaning the bezel and strap attachments provide a dazzling contrast with Hublot's signature H-shaped screws, rendered here in matt-black titanium.

The MP-11 is wound manually using a large, fluted crown in black rubber, shaped in ‘screw’ relief to echo the helical worm gear inside. Like the MP-05 of 2013, whose 11 barrels provided 50 days of power, you engage an electric ‘Torx’ stylus into the hub of the crown to wind it quickly, like an F1 pit stop. Fitting, given the MP-05 was inspired by the powertrain of the LaFerrari hypercard. www.rox.co.uk

THE UNDOING

RAY HARRYHAUSEN: TITAN OF CINEMA

After David Lynch’s disastrous 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic it’s time for Denis Villeneuve to see how he brings to life the slightly barmy world of interstellar feuding families, spice, weirdly blue-eyed Fremen and massive worms. Villeneuve has form for adapting out-there literary sci-fi and turning it into relatable celluloid, as anyone who has tried to work through the linguistic equations in Ted Chiang’s The Story of Your Life, the novella on which Arrival was based, will attest. The trailer looks immense with lots of brooding from Chalamet, beautiful cinematography from Roger Deakin, who made Bladerunner 2049 an immersive visual feast, and Hans Zimmer on music.

Hugh Grant is definitely having a second career renaissance. From his revoltingly sleazy turn as politician Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal to exercising his comic chops Paddington 2. The Undoing sees Grant playing opposite Nicole Kidman in a limited drama based on the 2014 novel You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz. Details are being kept very close to HBO’s chest but what we do know is the series follows Grace Fraser (Kidman) a successful therapist, who has the perfect life until, weeks before the publication of her first book, everything falls apart. There’s a violent death, a missing husband (Grant) and terrible revelations. It’s been written and produced by David E Kelley and directed by Susanne Bier, so hopes are high.

Any adult of a certain age will have memories of rainy Sunday afternoons watching slightly jittery monsters fight men in togas. Whatever you think of Ray Harryhausen’s plots, you can’t deny lasting impression his stop-motion animation, which he called “Dynamation” had on a generation of children. Now, thanks to new exhibition at The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, you can come face to face with his creations. Stare into the eyes of his terrifying Medusa from 1981’s Clash of the Titans; square up to the skeleton soldiers from Jason and the Argonauts and see models of some of his famous creations from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad’s Kali. It is a rare chance to up close with characters that inspired a new generation of filmmakers.

THE COFFEE TABLE PICASSO: THE IMPOSSIBLE COLLECTION There is a school of thought that no one needs another definitive work on Picasso, however, this a rather special addition to this particular shelf. This 200-page volume, produced by luxury book and gift brand Assouline, has been curated by the artist’s granddaughter Diana Widmaier Picasso. Comprising 100 works that serve to illustrate the evolution of Picasso’s artistic style, it goes deeper than the classics that any casual art lover is familiar with and reveals and revisits some of his less ubiquitous yet equally powerful paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs. Printed in Assouline’s usual high-end style this tome brings Picasso to life in a way he has never been seen before. Just don’t leave it where people can spill their coffee on it.

THE PODCAST

THE ALBUM

THE NIGHTSTAND

THRILLING TALES OF MODERN CAPITALISM

FAITHLESS ALL BLESSED

THE LAST DAYS OF JOHN LENNON BY JAMES PATTERSON

There is nothing sarcastic about the title of this podcast. Brought to you by Slate, the online news, politics, technology and culture magazine, each episode takes a well-known company and looks into its history to find out how it has ended up where it is now. There’s an episode on shoe brand Crocs and how being hated and fugly might be precisely what brought the business back from the brink of collapse; a deep-dive into the corruption at the heart of the American canned tuna industry and a look at how an unwillingness to accept the changes happening in the world of fashion, the new demands of inclusivity and how women’s bodies are viewed has been all-but destroyed by Victoria's Secret. It really is capitalism at its most thrilling.

All Blessed might seem like a strange title for an album released in 2020, but there you go. Faithless has decided that we are all to be blessed with their first album in 10 years. Sister Bliss and Rollo are back and joined by a whole host of collaborators from Soul II Soul founder Jazzie B to poets Suli Breaks and Caleb Femi as well as singers Nathan Ball and Damien Jurado. The band has released one single from the forthcoming album, Synthesizer – a pleasing trance-y anthem, which harks back to the dance-floor fillers Insomnia and God is A DJ. Hopefully this is a sign of where the rest of the album is headed because we all need a little euphoria in our lives right now. Even if the only dancefloor we have is the imaginary one in our kitchen.

James Patterson turns his knack for writing a gripping page-turner to non-fiction with his account of John Lennon’s life and career from his first songs to his last seconds. Rather than being a straight biography, Patterson weaves the life of Lennon with the man who would eventually end his life – Mark David Chapman creating a narrative of suspense, despite the reader ultimately knowing how this tale is going to end. With a sickening sense of the inevitable, we see Lennon leaving the Beatles to pursue a solo career and build a life with Yoko Ono in New York City, as, in parallel, Chapman’s fatal obsession with the singer grows. Exclusive interviews with friends and associates, including Paul McCartney, enrich this true-crime tale.

PERPETUAL

MOTION The legacy of the Baume & Mercier dynasty is a classical tradition that'll run and run, with one foot in the past and both eyes on the horizon. Words by Alex Doak.

B

aume & Mercier is the canny choice of young, well-heeled types whose idea of luxury is far from flashy or frivolous. Discreet, unobtrusive designs and honest-to-goodness value for money are Baume & Mercier's stocks in trade – to be worn for a lifetime. The brand’s origins stretch back many lifetimes and then some, almost un-pinpointably, as the 'Baume' name dates from the Middle Ages – one of Switzerland's grand old names, like Piguet or Meylan. There are written documents from the ‘Seigneurs de Baume’ in the western Jura from as early as 1440. The Baumes started their watchmaking venture in the 16th century; they encouraged farmers and smiths to fabricate parts for their timepieces. Paul and Jean Baume established the parish of Les Bois in 1610 and gave neighbouring farmers part-time jobs assembling movements and watches. As for the Baume & Mercier as we know it? Things really got going in 1830, when brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume opened a 'comptoir horloger' in the mountain village of Les Bois...

1834 Four years after opening their Les Bois dealership, 'Frères Baume' registers a watchmaking facility on the same premises. There, a new type of escapement is developed allowing particularly slender watches. 1847 Pierre-Joseph Célestin Baume establishes the 'Baume Brothers' subsidiary in London, marrying an Englishwoman in the process and exploiting new markets throughout the British Empire, as far as New Zealand. 1892 The company won 10 Grand Prix awards and seven gold medals at several international exhibitions, but the biggest accolade was for Alcide Baume's Tourbillon, scoring 91.9 at the Kew Observatory chronometer trials. It remains most-accurate for 10 years. 1918 The company moved to Geneva in the early 1900s and changes to 'Baume et Mercier' at the end of the Great War when William Baume

TIMELINE

2013 Clifton is introduced in 2012, and a year later, top billing given to the '1830' model in gold, kitted out with a fine, hand-finished La Joux-Perret movement joins forces with Paul Mercier – a Russian originally by the name of Tschereditschenko who married a peasant French girl and worked his way up to become manager of Haas jewellers of Geneva. The prudent Swiss industrialist and the artistically minded Russo-French businessman make for an ideal partnership. 1937 After flourishing success during the Roaring Twenties and weathering the Great Depression, Paul Mercier passes the baton to Polish-born Constantin De Gorski.

2014 The ladies' Promesse is a triumph of poised, delicate geometry – a circle within an oval, with countless permutations of jazzy straps and diamond settings. 2015 The racy Carroll Shelby Capeland marks 50 years since the Le Mans legend's invasion of Europe’s circuits, winning the World Manufacturer’s GT trophy with his all-American team and V8 Cobra. 2016 The world's best-value Perpetual Calendar launches as part of the Clifton range, appropriately enough on a leap year. (Now based on the Baumatic and just £20,900 in pink gold.)

1949 The firm grasped the importance of emancipation and were inspired by women's singleminded sense of style. The fabulous ‘Marquise' bracelet watch inspires a lasting line in creative 2017 feminine watches. The launch of the pumped-up Clifton Club – designed for the modern 1965 'gentlesportsman' (see main pic). Baume & Mercier merges with topend Piaget and adopts the Greek letter “phi” – an appropriate motif that lasts to this day, relating to the Golden Ratio and Baume & Mercier's pursuit of perfection. "Poor man's Piaget" was a moniker that top brass disliked, but did wonders for sales. 1971 B&M joins the electronic age with ‘Tronosonic’, humming with tuning-fork movement 'Mosaba', manufactured under license from its American inventor, Bulova. 1988 Piaget becomes part of Cartier's 'Vendôme' group (now Richemont); Baume & Mercier's modern incarnation hits top gear, launching hit after affordable hit: the simple, round Classima, the Art Deco-casual rectangular Hampton, the more rugged CapeLand sports line…

2018 The Baumatic movement is unveiled to great fanfare: an inhouse movement developed with Richemont's Val Fleurier skunkworks, fighting fit for the 21st-century. Antimagnetic, with five-day power reserve and chronometric precision. What more could you want from a watch under £3,000? 2020 The Clifton Baumatic comes of age with new moon phase and GMT iterations bearing handsome blue dials and grey 'gradients’. Plus, the oblong Hampton makes a welcome return across both men's and women's with self-winding mechanics.

BOXES OF

DELIGHT Why bother braving the great outdoors this winter, when you can have restaurants deliver deliciousness to you.

M

enus, proper tablecloths, someone else doing the cooking and washing up – there are many things to miss about going to restaurants. However, you don’t need to miss eating top-quality food from around the UK because there are those waiting to deliver the experience to you. Here’s just a few out there offering fivestar food that you can eat in the comfort of your own home. So, swap your pyjamas for something fabulous, turn off the television and get ready to recreate the restaurant experience. Starched linen optional.

THE SUNDAY-LUNCH ONE – HAME BY ADAM HANDLING. £130. SERVES TWO. If you’re missing your regular Sunday roast down the local, then you need this in your life. Hame (the Scottish word for “home”) is the brainchild of Scottish wünderkind Adam Handling. Handling was the first-ever trainee chef at Gleneagles, following which he took over at St Andrews, becoming the Fairmont Group’s youngest-ever head chef. From there, he’s garnered myriad awards, opened restaurants and a cocktail bar and now luxury home delivery. As you’d expect from a chef who has cheese-truffle doughnuts on his snack menu, this Sunday roast kit is not exactly the traditional “meat, veg and gravy” offering. You warm up the taste buds with Handling’s signature sourdough and with his sinfully delicious chicken butter; then burrata to be served with romesco and leeks, followed by a rather decadent whole trufflestuffed chicken to roast with mash and a Caesar salad. And finally, if you still have some room after all that, a tarte tatin. All that’s missing is a roaring fire and the mildly drunk ranting of bloke at the end of the bar. Adamhandling.co.uk/hame

THE MID-WEEK ONE – BELLY OF THE BEAST. £15/PP. SERVES AS MANY AS YOU LIKE. If you’re fed up with the constant daily dinner grind, then this is ideal. Chris Coulter has transformed his high-end catering company into a food-delivery business. Each week Coulter and his team devise a two-course menu, which you can find every Monday on their Instagram stories (@bellyofthebeastco). What’s for dinner is determined by what’s in season and all you have to do is warm up and plate up. Coulter likes to keep things local. All the meat used is sourced from Charlotte's Butchery in Gosforth or Block and Bottle in Heaton and fish comes from Hodgson's in Hartlepool, you might even dine on vegetables from the allotment if there’s a glut. You can even accessorise your main course with homemade pickles, condiments or hot sauces, which can be bought separately, and, if you feel like switching this up to a celebration, you can add a mixed box of dessert traybakes. Where possible all the packaging is either biodegradable, compostable or can be recycled and those that aren’t can be reused. The only downside is you have to live in Newcastle or Gateshead to take advantage of this amazing service. bellyofthebeast.co.uk

THE CELEBRITY ONE – RICK STEIN’S STEIN’S AT HOME LOBSTER BOX. £85 (PLUS £7.95 DELIVERY). SERVES TWO. All the way from Padstow to your plate comes these boxes of pescatarian pleasure. You could opt for the Hake box or the Indonesian curry, but nothing says restaurant-level decadence like lobster. It’s also one of those creatures that only the most ambitious grapple with in the comfort of their own kitchen. As well as the main of lobster thermidor, there is a starter of grilled scallops with hazelnut and coriander butter and a very waistline-destroying chocolate pavé. There is some light cooking involved – mostly chopping herbs, warming sauces and putting things in ovens or under grills – and if you’re totally flummoxed by the instructions there’s a handy five-minute video tutorial on rickstein.com led by son Jack. Thankfully the lobster has been dealt with – it comes halved and pre-cooked – and it also comes with a side salad from the Padstow kitchen garden and some new potatoes. All you have to do is buy the wine. Rickstein.com

THE MICHELIN-STARRED ONE – THE MADE IN OLSTEAD SIGNATURE BOX. £120. SERVES TWO. From the kitchen of the Black Swan, a Michelin-starred restaurant with accommodation in Olstead near York, comes food prepared by Britain’s youngest starred chef Tommy Banks. Make no mistake, this isn’t a mid-week one-pan affair, it is five-course extravaganza, with a bottle of matched wine to accompany it, featuring such culinary delights as beetroot cooked in beef fat, a main of prime-salt-aged beef wellington and other accoutrements – country bread, with an intriguing-sounding cheddar custard, and chicory root and chocolate. As with the food on the menu at the Black Swan, where possible all the ingredients are grown both on and around the Banks’s family farm, which means you really are getting the best of British with this box. BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN We’ve teamed up with the lovely people at Bunches – the Nottinghamshire-based flower, plant and gifts home delivery service – to give you some top tips for turning your home into an Insta-worthy indoor jungle. Scroll through anyone’s Instagram feed worth it’s likes these days and you'd be forgiven for thinking they’d all taken up residence in the Eden Project. There’s lush devil’s ivy tumbling from bookshelves, jolly pink guzmanias parked next to the television, money trees jostling for space with cheese plants- there doesn’t seem to be a single surface or corner that isn’t home to a plant. But how do you manage to select your plants without making your home look like a garden centre and, more importantly, how do you keep them alive. We asked Bunches for some advice. BEST PLANTS FOR YOUR LIVING ROOM: Your living room is the place you most want to make a statement. An elegant phalaenopsis orchid or showstopping dracaena are both sure to be a timeless addition to your home, no matter what your colour scheme. Why not try plant-pot stands of varying heights? We recommend clusters of three, filled with different botanical beauties are sure to add modern texture to your living space. BEST PLANTS FOR YOUR BEDROOM: Air-purifying plants such as snake and peace lily plants and succulents help to filter harmful toxins and can even boost the humidity of a room by up to 5%. These luscious green plants are the ideal addition to a bedroom – especially in the colder months when low humidity levels can increase your risk of catching a common cold as well as drying out your skin. Not only do they have all of these amazing properties, they are also on trend and require minimal care.

BEST PLANTS FOR YOUR KITCHEN Why not create a herb garden for your kitchen windowsill? Not only will this help to bring nature indoors, but can also be used in cooking. Think flavours such as mint, oregano, basil, thyme, and parsley – perfect for adding to your meals or even to garnish a cocktail. BEST PLANTS FOR YOUR BATHROOM Aloe vera is yet another extremely useful plant, best known for its ability to soothe burns when applied topically. But did you know it is a common ingredient in many skincare products? Aloe Vera is rich in vitamin C and E and super moisturising too - an ideal ingredient to look out for, perfect for all skin types. CARE TIPS: Each plant has its own special set of steps to follow in order to keep them healthy and happy, however all plants thrive when placed in spots with indirect sunlight, away from radiators and draughts and are watered when their topsoil is feeling dry. Air-purifiers such as peace lilies will let you know when they are thirsty; their leaves will droop but will quickly perk back up after a big drink. Most orchid plants on the other hand, prefer warm environments and require very little water. If you’ve still got questions then on how to take care of your plant family, then head over to bunches.co.uk/plant-care for more advice.

THE HIGHLANDS AND ALLADALE The brooding majesty of the Highlands is all anyone needs to vanquish the lockdown blues. Inspirational, humbling, reflective and beautifully raw, the wild heart of Scotland is what the hashtag ‘#isolationgoals’ was invented for. ‘Heart’ being the operative word here, as the opening stretch of our first staycation roadtrip follows the ‘Riverside East’ section of newly launched tourism initiative ‘Heart 200’ – two-hundred circuitous miles of spectacular Highlands driving, launched last year by the owners of Fortingall Hotel and supported by Visit Scotland. Ultimately, however, your sights are set on somewhere even less populous and even more remote than that: Alladale Wilderness Reserve. But before you spoil the mudflaps of your Land Rover (see box) why not indulge in one last taste of urbane luxury at Gleneagles? One day and one night of five-star pampering, courtesy an Espa wellness centre (pictured overleaf), championship greens, two-star Michelin dining, and fabulously (if quietly) appointed suites. Now suitably rebooted, it’s time to hit the tarmac… Heart 200’s eastern stretch recommends hugging the Rivers Tummel, Braan, Ericht and Tay along the A93, A293 and A9, stopping off at Loch of the Lowes Nature Reserve near Dunkeld to watch ospreys, as well as beavers and red squirrels. Dunkeld is also home to Aran, the subject of our cookery pages (see p48), where you can stock up on freshly baked pastries to fuel your longest leg: up the Cairngorns-skirting A9, deep into the dark north of the mainland.

Come off the A9 two and a half hours later, just before the town of Alness, onto the B9176 to Bonar Bridge. Your map app will then cut out, as tarmac turns to gravel, so make sure you scribble down the directions detailed on Alladale’s website beforehand! For here, over the next few days, you will experience a blissful disconnection like no other. For over 15 years, the scion of MFI furniture’s former owners, Paul Lister has nurtured 100 square kilometers of rugged mountains, forests, rivers and lochs, planting almost 1 million trees, restoring damaged peatlands, and rewilding the red squirrel as well as wolves and wildcat. All funded by the main lodge and three fully catered, lavishly appointed cottages, hosting up to 40 guests at a time. Huntin’, shootin’, fishin’? All that and much more.

WHICH CAR? LAND ROVER DEFENDER P400E Every Highlander’s go-to four-wheeler is of course the Land Rover Defender – so thank goodness this British automotive institution has been reimagined for the Twenties in such a capable, future-forward manner. So complete in fact, the 2021 Model Year sees the addition of an advanced plug-in hybrid model – the P400e, which combines a powerful 2.0-litre fourcylinder petrol engine and torquey 105kW electric motor, with CO2 emissions of just 74g/km. For 27 all-electric miles, you can roll down the windows and enjoy the gentle trickle and birdsong of the Highlands, underscored rather than drowned out by the powertrain.

COASTING NORTHUMBERLAND For sweeping, windswept coastal drama, the driving holiday you’re looking for has to be the Borders to Alnmouth, via the Lindisfarne. In other words, the Northumberland coast, which shouldn’t have to settle as a welcome flash of scenery on the train down to London. Instead, throw a weekend bag in the boot of a suitably sporty grand tourer (see box) and stretch the 70-minute road trip over a few days, taking the time to bathe in the ancient attractions’ mysterious spirituality. Dismissed by some as just a stop on said rail journey, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a surprisingly sophisticated tourist hub, so make somewhere like Crabtree & Crabtree’s Whitesand Shiel cottage your base, overlooking Robert Stephenson’s 28arch viaduct from the banks of the Tweed (pictured opposite), and delve right in. Berwick was painter L. S. Lowry’s favoured vacation and it’s easy to see why: you can walk Britain’s most complete circuit of town walls, there’s a renowned art gallery, and Bridge Street boasts a menagerie of quirky boutiques. At no.31, take a heady lungful of library dust through the labyrinthine bookshelves of Slightly Foxed, or munch on a filled pastrami bagel while you browse rare vinyl at The Mule on Rouge (no.17).

Back on the A1, it’s a blast south to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, for some quiet, if moody reflection. Rising from the horizon like a Disney castle, its ruined fortification was built in the reign of Henry VIII, with a magical walled garden, designed by Gertrude Jekyll. Whenever you do go, however, ensure you obey the tide timetables to the letter, before crossing the two-mile causeway. The rescue helicopter and lifeboat are called out with monotonous regularity! From Lindisfarne, the coast road follows Budle Bay, now an English Nature reserve and home to numerous species of wildfowl, so make sure you bring some binoculars. The B1342 goes past the RNLI museum to Bamburgh, which is of course dominated by its magnificent castle perched on the crags above (pictured top). A tour is a must.

Leaving Bamburgh, we pass through the fishing village of Seahouses (take a boat trip to the Farne Islands), before the B1340 merges onto the B1339 and we reach the harbour at Beadnell. Large limekilns dominate the harbour, sand dunes stretch far into the distance. Next, another brief detour to Low Newton and its beach-side Ship Inn is recommended; one of the most attractive coastal villages in a region full of them. Turn left onto Windyside Hill to Craster, famous for its delicious kippers. To the north you can see the mighty ruin of Dunstanburgh castle, now run by English Heritage. You leave the B1339 at Longhoughton, hugging the wild and windy seafront to Boulmer, then your final destination, Alnmouth, whose painted houses along the bank of the River Aln estuary are the first signs of this town’s picture-perfection. The locals will also appreciate its 4.0-litre engine’s stop-start tech, plus the ability to de-activate four of its eight cylinders in town centres – a seamless change that happens in just 20 milliseconds.

BREAD WINNER The sleepy Highlands village of Dunkeld harbours a quiet phenomenon in the world of baking: Aran. It’s Scottish Gaelic from the Old Irish ‘arán’ meaning ‘loaf’. It also means a bakery like no other, whose tireless founder Flora Shedden has wasted no time in winning the love of locals and tourists alike… as well as publishers. If you’re unable to pop by en route to Alladale (see page 42), here’s an extract from Flora’s debut cookbook of 2019, so you can bring the warmth and delicacy of her craft to you and yours’ own home kitchen.

CHANTERELLE , SHALLOT AND GRUYÈRE FRITTATA Serves 6 generously 300 g (10½ oz) new potatoes, quartered extra virgin olive oil, for frying 300 g (10½ oz) shallots, finely sliced 1 garlic clove, finely sliced 200 g (7 oz) chanterelle mushrooms, brushed, cleaned and trimmed knob of butter 8 eggs double (heavy) cream, 100 g (3½ oz) Gruyère, grated 100 g (3½ oz) Cheddar, grated salt and freshly ground black pepper grating of nutmeg 1 small bunch of thyme, leaves picked salad leaves, to serve

Preheat the oven to 170ºC (340ºF/Gas 5). Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and drop in your potatoes; they should only take 10–15 minutes to cook. Heat a large ovenproof non-stick frying pan (skillet) – ours is 28 cm (11 in), but you can make an extra-deep frittata in a smaller pan – with a little olive oil. Cook the shallots until softened, around 5 minutes. Add the garlic, cooking for a few minutes more. Tip out of the pan and into a bowl, then set aside. Wipe out the pan, then place on a high heat and cook the chanterelles for a few moments. They will be squeaky to start with but will soften quite quickly. Once softened, around 3–5 minutes, add the butter and stir well. Return the onions and garlic to the pan, then turn off the heat.

Crack the eggs into a measuring jug. Top up with double cream to the 800 ml (27 fl oz) mark. Add the grated cheeses and whisk. Season well and add a good grating of nutmeg. Fold through the thyme. Drain the cooked potatoes and add to the pan along with a little extra oil. Return to the heat and pour in the cheese and egg mixture. Stir to make sure everything is coated. Fry over a medium heat for 5 minutes until the eggs start to settle and cook. Reduce the heat to low and cook for a few more minutes, then place in the oven for 10 minutes, or until cooked through. Allow to cool for 15 minutes, then cover with a plate and flip the pan carefully. Remove the pan and cover with a second plate. Flip over again and remove the top plate. Allow to cool completely before slicing. Best served with a tangle of salad.

ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE CERAMIC GREEN

ALPINE EAGLE XL CHRONO

40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY YELLOW GOLD

Green, mean, and not so lean, Audemars Piguet upholds its uncontested status as the originator of oversize with this latest update of its ‘Offshore’ – the Brute From Le Brassus (our nickname) that back in 1993 injected controversy as well as steroids into the Royal Oak, which 20 years prior to that had ruffled feathers simply by being a steel sports watch with a luxury pricetag. The mighty Oak’s octagonal form is now rendered purely in black and green ceramic, in Hulk-like 44mm proportions, topped by an equally sinister smoky dial. 75979 | £34,000

This issue of ROX Magazine, complete with three-page feature on the Chopard Alpine Eagle, had almost gone to print when news of the latter’s XL Chrono update landed. To be fair, we should have expected it – as the Swiss watchmaker’s fresh new take on the outdoorsy lifestyle (an update of Eighties jetset favourite, the St Moritz) it was always going to have a stopwatch version. What’s especially gratifying though, is that the Alpine Eagle’s innards are upgraded to a fully integrated chronograph engine derived from Chopard’s top-flight ‘L.U.C.’ atelier, with flyback function into the bargain too. 75669 | £16,800

The fact we see rubber so frequently in rebellious ‘fusion’ with gold can be credited entirely to Carlo Crocco. Forty years ago, this scion of the Italian Binda dynasty, best known for making Breil watches, struck out to create what’s become an icon of 20th-century watch design: angular case, mounted by a circular bezel and 12 exposed screws, looking just like a boat’s porthole (the French for which he adopted as the brand name). The rest is history, which is why it’s so wonderful to see the now-LVMH-owned Hublot paying tribute to Signore Crocco’s original gamble so faithfully. 75945 | £20,800

TUDOR BLACK BAY FIFTY-EIGHT NAVY BLUE No intro required when it comes to the Black Bay. Having facilitated Tudor’s longoverdue stride out of the shadow of big brother Rolex, the diving collection’s greatest hits of vintage details, in combination with modern manufacturing nous has become a phenomenon itself. This year, things are understandably understated, reined in at 39mm, painted precisely in keeping with the French Navy’s favoured colourway from the Seventies, and – given those in-house mechanics – irresistibly priced. 75074 | £2,760

EL PRIMERO DEFY 21 ULTRAVIOLET

MONACO

IONBIRD

As you’ll see from our exclusive interview with Carl Cox, the thinking everyman’s chronograph specialist, Zenith is flourishing with exciting new technological twists to its El Primero workhorse, going even further than the Defy 21’s flagrantly epic addition of a secondary powertrain driving a 100thof-a-second blur of a stopwatch. DJ Cox’s special edition threw glow-in-the-dark carbon into the mix; this one’s exposed bridges and winding rotor glow vividly in noble violet. 75187 | £11,000

It’s no secret that Jack Heuer’s last-ditch efforts to save his family firm in the Sixties were not only successful, but gave fruition to the driver’s chronograph as we know it, mucking in with the pit crews of Europe and America’s major race series and giving them what they needed: the Carrera chronograph, named after Mexico’s lethal road race. Its cult successor, made famous by Steve McQueen’s character in Le Mans (1971) is the square-jawed Monaco (no prizes for working out that name), which now boasts the Heuer 02 calibre, keeping time for 80 straight hours. 75737 | £5,050

There’s not a single plucky, British airborne exploit that would overlook Bremont as their timekeeper these days. The Henleyon-Thames watchmaker has, in less than 20 years, established itself as the go-to high-end alternative to standardissue military-issue wristwear, with tie-ins stretching from Martin-Baker ejector seats to the restoration of the Wright Brothers’ original flying machine. This year, RollsRoyce is building the fastest-yet, fully electric aeroplane and keeping time on the 300mph attempt will be Bremont. This titanium-clad GMT tribute is just the start… 75978 | £4,495

MIGHTY OAKS

When Jules Louis Audemars and Edward August Piguet planted themselves in Le Brassus, neither could imagine how spectacular their legacy would prove – as the new ‘Musée Atelier’ proves. Words by Alex Doak.

W

hen it comes to Swiss watchmaking, place is just as important as product. It’s why Audemars Piguet has reigned as high-watchmaking wizard for nigh-on 175 years with its feet firmly in Le Brassus. And it’s why it continues to invest in the sort of extraordinary building projects you’re looking at now. You’re forgiven for drawing a blank at Le Brassus. Hardly a top-ranking Airbnb search request, this low-rise ribbon settlement is clustered about the only main road into the Vallée de Joux – an Elysian field of high-altitude isolation, which, as home also to Blancpain and Jaeger-LeCoultre, made it the Silicon Valley of its day. The road might be just 60 minutes from Geneva airport in the car, but back in the 18th century, this pocket of Switzerland on the French border couldn’t have felt more isolated. Come the winter snow, therefore, the valley’s resourceful dairy farmers hung up their cattle prods every November and turned to an altogether smaller set of tools…

“From the 1740s to the early 1800s,” explains Sébastian Vivas, as the man responsible for preserving Audemars Piguet’s heritage, “the watchmakers in the Joux region walked to Geneva every spring to sell the movements they’d made over the winter to the ‘cabinottiers’ and ‘établisseurs’.” “But soon enough,” he continues, “the hill farmers realised that more money could be made if they put their own names on the dials. So many of them stopped farming altogether and began making watches all year. Families throughout the valley co-operated.” Social geography is everything for Swiss watchmaking, and even though the Joux isn’t still reliant on dairy farmers pivoting to screw manufacture come the first flurry of winter, watchmakers do like to stay local, bedded into their own heritage. (Plus, the serenity of the Jura Mountains’ idyllic scenery does help their craft.) So Audemars Piguet rightly stays put where they’ve been since 1875, expanding their historic home in increments, drawing on the local talent, and remaining proudly family owned – the only grande maison of Switzerland that still is. They’ve

now rightly immortalised their lineage with a purpose-built museum. Only, no one expected this sort of museum. Imagined by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and his BIG partnership, which laid the foundation stone as far back as 2017 (such was the complexity of its build), the new ‘Musée Atelier’ absorbs the Audemars family house’s neighbouring, priceless collection within a futuristic spiral extension. Two interlocked ‘swoops’ are bedded into the valley’s slope, entirely supported by their curved glass walls and topped with a living roof. As family stalwart Jasmine Audemars concluded during the ceremony, “This project is far from simple, but it is important; not only for Audemars Piguet but for the entire Vallée de Joux. We thank our neighbours for their support, and especially for their taste for avant-garde projects!” ‘Avant garde’ is putting it mildly, even for a serial disruptor like AP. Thanks to each glass wall’s heft, in combination with bronze-mesh shades, the interior is a dreamy, open-plan space with an expansive aspect on the Joux valley and

its cowbell-clanking residents. “Watchmaking, like architecture, is the art and science of imbuing metals and minerals with energy, movement, intelligence and measure – to bring them to life in the form of telling time.” So says Bjarke Ingels himself, no doubt with a sly nod to those enterprising 18th century farmers who mined ore from the surrounding hills to make into watch components. Walk the undulating, corridors and you don’t just mingle with AP’s 300-odd historic artefacts, you’re rubbing shoulders with living history: the maison’s most elite watchmakers, as well as its 'Métiers d’Art' gem setters and engravers, toiling away quietly at their new workbenches, dotted along the outer periphery. Talk about an office with a view. Given it takes eight months to assemble and adjust AP’s 684-piece catalogue topper, peering over their labcoated shoulders you’re unlikely to notice much more progress than if you were to scrutinise the epic ‘Universelle’ of 1899, frozen majestically at the heart of the Musée's spiral. But on a watchmaking level at least, a vivid tension between the past and the future is brought about

by Audemars Piguet's clever fusion of 'Musée' and 'Atelier'. “We all felt strongly that it was vital to include the Grande Complication Workshop near the heart of spiral,” says head of complications Michael Friedman, “to truly represent the importance of continuity – to connect the past, present and future in observable and immediate ways. “A ‘grande complication’,” Friedman explains, “is a watch that must include perpetual calendar, minute repeater and split seconds chronograph. It’s a definition established by our founders, Jules Louis Audemars and Edward August Piguet, and remains the case today.” To celebrate the space's ribbon cutting, in parallel to 2020's epic CODE 11:59 lacquer-dial launches, AP has created a new take on one of the museum's vanishingly rare chronographs, from 1943. Given the house made just 307 stopwatches from the 1930s through the 1950s, this was something everyone wanted to see. Named [Re]master01, and limited to 500 examples (pictured above left, £51,800), it evokes all of the design attributes of the museum

“THE INCREDIBLE NEW ‘MUSÉE ATELIER’ FUSES AUDEMARS PIGUET'S PRICELESS HISTORICAL COLLECTION AND PRICELESSLY TALENTED HIGH-COMPLICATIONS WATCHMAKERS WITHIN A FUTURISTIC SPIRAL EXTENSION.” original, including four flamboyantly flared ‘teardrop’ lugs enhanced by 18-carat pink gold bezel, crown and pushers. The champagnesheen dial is complemented with a cobalt-blue tachymetric scale, pink-gold hours, minutes and seconds hands, as well as blue chronograph hands that positively ping. Ever the nostalgic futurist, though, what ticks within is far from revival. The calibre 4409 is just about the most up-to-date self-winding chronograph movement to be found throughout the Vallée de Joux. In-house manufactured of course, with a useful 70 hours’ power as well as a ‘flyback’ function allowing another instantly zeroed timing event. The ghosts of cattle farmers past would surely be proud, peering through those curved glass walls. From small acorns, mighty (Royal) oaks do indeed grow.

OH YES..

OH YES! To its portfolio of high-frequency mechanical chronographs, Zenith has added a new source of precision beats, in the form of superstar DJ, Carl Cox – a living legend of house and techno, famed for bringing unbridled joy to every dancefloor, and having the personality to match. From humble beginnings as a 15-year-old mobile DJ in Oldham, he has placed himself front and centre of British rave and clubbing culture, introduced the Detroit and Chicago sounds to dance floors and muddy fields alike, produced and promoted through his own labels, and made Ibiza the mecca it is. Even through lockdown and with the continued closure of nightclubs, DJ Cox remains hyperactive from his base in Melbourne, as ROX Magazine’s co-editor Alex Doak had the pleasure of finding out…

How did the hook-up happen?

My manager and I met the team at Zenith and we all really clicked. Nothing was planned but it seemed like a natural progression to collaborate based on shared values. Once we started to design the Carl Cox Limited Edition watch we looked at all the things I’d want from a watch and how it would work for me on stage, in the studio and in my personal life. The carbon bezel’s glow-in-thedark is great for me but also adds a real electronic music and nightlife vibe to the watch.

I find a chronograph really useful in the kitchen. What do you use your El Primero's chronograph function for? Truth be told, I don’t think I’ve ever realistically used the chronograph for something specific. Does anyone, really? But activating the chrono on my DEFY 21 is a lot of fun, 1/100th of a second is a lot faster than my eyes can keep up with! Every time I start it, I’m amazed by the speed and sound.

Anyone who hasn’t carried two full record boxes in the dark through a muddy field to a rave is travelling light! I’ve always been interested in new technology and that’s important for me – as a DJ, live artist or in the studio. Everything I do is about sharing music as widely as possible and new innovations are a big part of shaping the sounds and performances of the future.

WHEELS OF STEEL For Carl Cox’s debut Zenith release, limited to 200 pressings, Zenith has turned things up to 11 with a suitably nocturnal carbon-fibre remix of its ‘Defy 21’ chronograph. As well as its futuristic 1/100th of a second stopwatch function, whose central hands sweeps around in a blur, the ‘techno’ stakes have been upped with a bezel and strap stitch that both glow in the dark. Adding a personal touch, the runningseconds subdial has been rendered as vinyl disc, complete with ‘CC’ label, plus there’s a pair of Pioneer headphones into the bargain, signed by the man himself. “I am very lucky that I am able to share my love of music all over the world,” he says. “All of us have the power within us to feel the beat and dance – my job is to bring that energy out and to unite everyone on the dancefloor. In a similar way, Zenith is about elevating the art of watchmaking and sharing its innovations with the world, so collaborating with them on a watch with a high-frequency beat felt very natural.” Quite right, too. The Zenith DEFY 21 Carl Cox is available from ROX now. 74838 | £16,000

You’re known for championing new talent, so go on: who should we be raiding Soundcloud for, right now? There is so much great music out there and really interesting new artists coming through. My Awesome Soundwave label focuses on live electronic artists so I’d have to say you should listen to our new release from Digital Afrika, blending rhythms and cultures.

I certainly will, DJ Cox! Thank you for your valuable time.

BIRD OF

PREY Set your sights on Chopard’s killer Alpine Eagle, hitting the slopes for the first time in four decades, now equipped with 2020 vision. Words by Alex Doak.

ack in the Seventies, a single designer made an indelible mark on the modern watchscape (as well as St Tropez’s dancefloors) by inventing the luxurious sports watch as we know it. Swiss maestro Gérald Genta’s signature tropes of boldly geometric, stainless-steel cases, integrated bracelets and exposed screws remain as funkadelic as ever, with recent years seeing a flurry of ‘inspired’ releases, all indebted to his

rope with the perfect ‘sporty luxe’ evolution of Genta’s then-unfashionable burliness. It was named, appropriately enough, ‘St Moritz’, and it became the watch that finally set Chopard back on the watchmaking map. Back in 1963, after 100-plus years of building a fine reputation for Swiss watchmaking – first in Sonvilier, then La Chaux-de-Fonds, then Geneva itself – Louis-Ulysse Chopard’s grandson PaulAndré sought a buyer capable of perpetuating

“IT WAS 22-YEAR-OLD SON KARL-FRIEDRICH’S DEBUT AT THE HELM OF THE WATCHMAKING DIVISION IN 1980 THAT REVEALED CHOPARD'S POTENTIAL AS THE MODERN WATCHMAKER WE KNOW NOW.” revolutionary blueprint, the octagonal Audemars Piguet Royal Oak of 1972. Gérald Genta’s famed triptych of that decade – Royal Oak, plus IWC’s Ingenieur SL and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus – is more collectable than ever. But come the Eighties, a more preening era of ‘disco glitz’ took off and every lounge lizard’s go-to jeweller, Chopard was waiting at the velvet

the brand's rich heritage, since none of his sons wished to take over the company. This was when he began serious talks with Karl Scheufele III, a descendant of a dynasty from Germany’s ‘Gold City’, Pforzheim and the jeweller for Chopard’s ritzier timepieces. Under the Scheufele family, Chopard became a darling of the Euro jetset (daughter www.rox.co.uk

Caroline makes the red carpets of Cannes sparkle annually, adorning every starlet in Chopard jewellery). But it was 22-year-old son Karl-Friedrich’s debut at the helm of the watchmaking division in 1980 that revealed its potential as the modern watchmaker we know now. His St Moritz masterstroke coincided with Cartier and Piaget’s other silky-smooth disco-glitzers, the Santos and Polo, and set the family firm onto a groove of exuberance and creativity. (Remember, just four years prior the Happy Diamonds was pitched to men!) Scheufele Jr has since established the ‘L.U.C.’ atelier up in Fleurier as one of haute horlogerie’s most capable, as well as making Chopard the byword for vintage motorsport timing with his Mille Miglia and Historic Monaco GP exploits. Now, forty years on, he is returning to where it all started for him. Only, the St Moritz is now ‘Alpine Eagle’, with a feather counterbalancing the seconds hand, smoothed-out ‘screw bulges’, a case construct more in keeping with the Genta-esque butchness now back in favour. It’s kitted 116

out with chronometer-rated mechanics too, from L.U.C.’s more ‘business class’ cousin Fleurier Ebauches. At a smidge over £8,000, it adds up to an irresistible package that will set you apart from the Genta disciples with ‘if you know, you know’ insider cool. What’s more, you’ll be doing your bit, as announced by all three male Scheufele generations at the Alpine Eagle’s launch while clutching a huge bird of prey each (pictured). In partnering with the Eagle Wings Foundation, Chopard is aiming to raise awareness of Mother Nature's urgent need for protection and pledged to work with the foundation to reintroduce the Golden species to its natural Alpine habitat. Forty years on, the ostentatious glamour of St Moritz might still be alive and grooving, but it’s heartening to see the scene’s luxury brands setting their eagle eyes on the bigger picture.

GOING WITH THE

HUBLOT

Celebrating four decades years as Swiss watchmaking's premier disruptor, Hublot continues to put populist partnerships at the heart of its ruthless marketing strategy, while silencing the naysayers with unquestionable horological nous, not to mention materials wizardry. No better demonstrated than by its fertile collaborations with Ferrari, FIFA’s World Cup referees, fashion bella Bar Rafaeli, and three other long-term relationships we profile here: a tattoo artist, a modernist sculptor, and an infamous bon viveur. If ‘Together’ is this issue of ROX Magazine’s guiding theme, then look no further than Hublot to see how fruitful coming together can be… Words by Alex Doak.

LUXURY WATCH EDIT

FUSING FACETS How did France’s biggest contemporary artist collaborate with the 21st-century jetset’s favourite luxury watchmaker to such visceral effect? Animal instinct, in more ways than one, as it transpires... Despite an early interest in art, sculpting precociously accomplished miniature animals out of clay at just 4, Richard Orlinski pursued a safer career in real estate until the ripe old age of 37. Then, overnight, out of last-gasp claustrophobia, he broke free of the corporate rat race and took his own path. But while the switch to the giddy world of fine art felt like a calling, Orlinski simply found himself contending with another conformist establishment. "I am not an insider," he told Port magazine last year. "I remember going to dinners where I hardly dared to say what I was doing." He managed to leverage this outsider approach to his benefit, however, while at the same time bolstering his mission to democratise art. Rather than seeking the validation of elite galleries, he uses unusual public spaces to get his work out there. His towering statues of gorillas, wolves and dinosaurs have all popped up on the glamorous slopes of Courchevel, the Croisette in Cannes, and Grand Prix paddocks.

Monochromatic and often monumental, Orlinski’s sculptures borrow the feral energy of the natural world and channel it with overt artificiality, such as primary colours and sharply faceted, glossy surfaces. Not entirely unlike the style of a certain Swiss watchmaker, you might say? The monumental form of Hublot’s titular ‘porthole’ design lends itself uncannily to Orlinski’s aesthetic, let alone his clientele. He has remoulded, with more subtlety than you’d expect, the brand’s iconic octagon into a threedimensional dodecagon, 12 facets for every hour. Then there’s Hublot’s expertise with ceramic, in all the colours of the rainbow, which precisely echoes Orlinski’s gleaming surfaces. “Hublot likes to push limits,” he says, of the pair’s suitability. “The fusion of our two worlds has been exercised in an extremely spontaneous, almost natural way!”

ITALIAN ÉLAN As we know all too well, Hublot’s relationship with Ferrari runs deep and fast. The chief of Maranello’s gleaming new ‘Centro Stile’ design wing, Flavio Manzoni takes a particularly personal approach to working with Nyon HQ’s own watch designers, wasting little time progressing from the fairly safe Prancing Horse-badged Big Bang special editions that started in 2011 to the epic 50-day-power-reserve MP-05, in tribute to the LaFerrari hypercar. What then followed was a clever separation of Hublot’s Ferrari watches into the same two, codependent schools that Enzo himself established: Scuderia Ferrari racing, and Gran Turismo road cars. The former’s watches are predictably bold, in high-tech and lightweight materials, while the GT watches, such as 2017’s TechFrame and last year’s Classic Fusion are more sinuous and biomorphic, just like Signore Manzoni and co.’s recent masterpieces, the SF90, F8 and Roma (see Chris Chilton’s review on page 177). Manzoni is known for not entirely staying true to the ‘form follows function’ design principle, preferring something he calls ‘the iconic effect’, which he explained in an Esquire interview as, “something that has a lot of personality… simple and very strong, very powerful from a visual point of view.” It’s difficult to disagree that his approach is working – nor that it extends to the watches with unerringly high-octane drama. But there’s someone else from the Ferrari universe who is bringing an altogether more sartorial edge to Hublot’s oeuvre. None other than Lapo Elkann – scion of the Fiat empire, bon-viveur bad boy, modern pioneer of custom Italian style, and confirmed jazzy suit addict. Elkann’s Garage Italia will transform your Ferrari any which way, and plenty more besides. It has also worked with Hublot on a unisex ‘Millennial Pink’ Big Bang, which hits the zeitgeist nail squarely (octagonally?) on the head with its pastel shade of anodised aluminium. His Italia Independent sunglasses outfit is also on precisely the same wavelength as Hublot – ‘wave’ being the operative word with the latest hookup, using teak-wood decking for the Big Bang’s bezel, as a nod to Lapo’s tycoon grandfather, Gianni Agenelli and his love of yachting. La dolce vita, indeed.

INKED IN It was 2017 when Hublot joined forces with Maxime Plescia-Büchi of maverick, eastLondon tattoo studio Sang Bleu, on a mission to create timepieces to truly stand out against your skin. The construction of each piece was to be reminiscent of the geometric shapes so dear to Sang Bleu, themselves taking wry inspiration from Leonardo de Vinci’s famous, diagrammatic study of human anatomy, the Vitruvian Man (ca1490). It’s a historical, as well as physiological fascination that has gone on to create an enduring history of its own – this year’s Sang Bleu timepieces being bolder and more elaborate than ever, diamonds sparkling from a reimagined Big Bang case construct, which tessellates with the di geometric sculpture “Maybe my interest for science prepared the ground for what I'm doing now,” Plescia-Büchi told ROX Magazine back in 2017. “I am relatively old for someone who embraced digital tools the way I did, but I did, very early on.” Originally inspired by graffiti and tattooing’s edgy, urban aesthetic codes, his ‘connected’ approach soon found himself being championed by fashion houses such as Chloé and Balenciaga. “Branding as an end rather than a means,” in his words. “Ironically, that’s what tattooing is too – the term ‘branding’ coming from the marking of cattle, after all!”

Such was Plescia-Büchi’s desire to share, it was 2006 when he set up Sang Bleu with his wife Hope – a contemporary multi-disciplinary creative agency responsible for creating Sang Bleu magazine, fine art, literature, tattooing and much more. So, for someone with such a singular vision, how did he find working with a rebellious Swiss watchmaker? “It was exceptional,” he enthuses. “By far the most pleasant experience of working with a client other than myself. The key being that they trusted me and let me do what I do. “I wish it was always like this!” Maybe that’s the secret to Hublot harbouring such esteemed coterie. For yet another 40 years, let’s hope. MILLENNIAL PINK Hublot’s collaborations with former-Fiat wild-child Lapo Elkann has yielded some interesting watches including ones with tweed straps and dials and ones with teak bezels. By comparison, the Hublot Millennial Pink seems quite staid, however it is its message that is revolutionary. Made in collaboration with Elkann’s Garage Italia, this is a gender-neutral watch. Elkann has said that he wanted to create something that represented a positive change, an idea of inclusivity and by launching a watch in a colour that can’t quite be pigeonholed, he and Hublot has done just that. Buy for yourself but expect it to be stolen by your other half. 75182 | £17,300

AUDEMARS PIGUET

ROYAL OAK

First blue, then green, now the watch colour du jour appears to be purple. And this Audemars Piguet version of the Royal Oak is making a strong case for it. As is usual, when this Le-Brassus legend decides to bring the bling, it doesn’t hold back. The bezel here is set with gradated pink and blue brilliant-cut sapphires, while diamonds adorn the rest of the case. Audemars Piguet’s signature Grand Tapisserie dial is now in purple, which is complemented by an alligator strap in the same shade. For some it might be a little “Prince and the New Power Generation” but if Mr Rogers Nelson embraced the purple, so should you. 75980 | £49,700

CHOPARD

HAPPY SPORT OVAL There is something incredibly joyful about a Chopard Happy Sport. It’s all about the way the dancing diamonds, which were so revolutionary when artistic director and co-president Caroline Scheufele designed them nearly 30 years ago, skitter and sparkle across the dial. Here they are given an extra shot of glamour thanks to the diamond-set bezel and warmly luxuriant rose-gold case and bracelet. It’s even powered by Chopard’s own in-house automatic calibre, so you don’t have to compromise between looks and technical prowess. 75981 | £28,900

ZENITH

DEFY MIDNIGHT This fabulous addition to the Zenith Defy canon is the horological equivalent of Rooney Mara – urban, sophisticated, a little bit quirky, with a definite “Converse with your Oscar frock” vibe. Yes, it’s a steel watch with diamonds but it’s so much more. There’s gradated blue dial that mimics the change in shades of a night sky, complete with a scatter of diamond stars. You buy it with three different strap options, all of which transform the watch’s personality and it has a bona-fide iconic movement inside – the Elite. Brains, beauty and a change of outfit, could you ask for anything more? 74948 | £9,000

ROGER DUBUIS VELVET

Roger Dubuis is known for making absolutely insane men’s watches; the sort of technical marvels where four balances whir away dialside or tourbillons fly caught in skeleton movements that look like spider’s webs. However, it also makes gorgeous decadent women’s watches under its Velvet collection. The 2020 version is particularly special. For the first time, it has an aventurine dial – a rich, shimmery form of quartz that looks like a midnight sky. There are diamonds everywhere – in the centre of the dial, around the bezel and on the lugs. It’s not a toy; it's a statement. 75731 | £52,500

TUDOR

BLACK BAY 32MM S&G

Tudor doesn’t just make manly watches. Its Black Bay has been turned into a 32mm bi-colour beauty for women wanting something more delicate on the wrist. There have been no compromises however, being powered by rocksolid mechanics, designed with the 'snowflake' hand of Tudor's classic Sixties diver, and you can indeed go diving with it, should you want to show the fishes a little glamour. Its fearless blend of gold and steel is brimming with the energy of brand ambassador, Lady Gaga and who wouldn’t want a piece of that on their wrist? 72978 | £2,990

BAUME & MERCIER HAMPTON

It seems crazy to think that only as far back as the 1990s, putting steel with diamonds was considered controversial. A mere thirty years later and it is one of the most popular women’s watch combinations thanks its day-to-night vibe. This version, from Baume & Mercier’s perennially popular Hamptons collection has precisely that aura of relaxed glamour, which makes this mix of precious diamonds and pedestrian metal so sought-after. The elongated, rectangular dial adds an extra elegance, while the soft glow of the mother-of-pearl dial is perfect for sundowners on your deck. In your Hamptons getaway, obviously. 75984 | £3,600 www.rox.co.uk

LOVE IS IN THE AIR What could be a more romantic first step on your marriage journey than designing an engagement ring together? We quiz ROX designer Alisa Mackie on how to create a ring as unique as your love story.

T

radition previously dictated that sole responsibility for proposing lay, heteronormatively, with the man. He was supposed to choose the perfect ring, the ideal spot and then make it all happen smoothly. Luckily, just like there are myriad ways to get married – on the shores of a subterranean lake in Cornwall perhaps? Leicester’s Space Centre perhaps? – there are just as many ways to propose. One thing that is changing is the need to have the ideal ring all picked out beforehand. Many couples are eschewing that particular stress by having a 150

simple stop-gap ring in silver (or even no ring at all) and making the doubly romantic decision to design the ring together. Something ROX knows all about. Being a business that is all about the romance – people have chosen their Thrill rooms to pop the question in because they are so beautiful – it has designers on hand to make sure you can create a ring that’s unique. To some people that might sound like the most terrifying thing in the world but fear not. Here’s ROX designer Alisa Mackie to talk you through the process.

ROX MAGAZINE

Q: Designing a ring might seem daunting to some people because they feel they should know about technical things such as cuts, carats and metals. What should they have an idea of before they come to you? AM: With the internet, people are far more educated on jewellery and gemstones especially the 4C's in diamonds. This is great for the client to make smart choices, however there are so many elements that make up the value of a diamond or a gemstone that it can be quite overwhelming. Certainly learn the basics. Have an idea what shape or cut you want, as this is probably where most people start to build the design. Colour or gemstone type is also very important as this can determine the direction of the design too, certainly in the case of coloured gemstones. Softer stones are suited to certain settings. Learn a bit about what might suit your lifestyle too. For instance, most people know a diamond is one of the hardest known materials to man and would suit the most heavy handed of us, By contrast I wouldn’t recommend a large emerald to a client who has a tendency to rock climb! Size is important too but be aware that big is not always beautiful. It’s easy to see a generic image of a one or twocarat diamond within budget on the internet but, in reality, it might not have any fire. I would always recommend that the client physically sees a selection of stones or diamond sizes before setting their heart one in particular. Beyond the basics and down to the nitty grittys of clarity, quality of cut, fluorescence etc. that can invariably affect price of similar size product, so let yourself be guided by one of our well-informed and trustworthy consultants.

FEATURE

Q: When people come to their first meeting with you do you prefer them to come with plenty of images of rings/inspiration for rings or do you prefer a more open-ended approach? AM: As much as it is nice to have an open-ended brief, every client is different and if you want a design really reflects you then providing the designer with an idea of who you are in terms of personality style, lifestyle, influences is important, so being supplied with images or some kind of background is preferred. Q: What do you think the benefits are to designing your own engagement ring together? AM: Obviously, it makes it very personal to the couple when they share in the process of designing a ring together. How you designed the piece and the meaning behind the design is your story rather than "how the proposer proposed?" Also, as much as proposing with a surprise engagement ring is very sweet, the wearer is hopefully wearing it for a lifetime and wants to enjoy it. Q: Do you find this makes people more confident about then designing their wedding rings with you? AM: Most people would like their wedding band to sit with the engagement ring. It means there is a consistency in the style of settings, the workmanship and the quality. But also when you have been involved in the story of the engagement ring then they want you involved in the wedding bands too, which is a very special thing for any jewellery designer.

love LOCKDOWN Attention all brides and grooms to be… love isn’t cancelled! Maxine McCreadie lifts the veil on getting hitched during a pandemic with a guide to the trends and regulations influencing the AW20 wedding season.

A

ll great love stories have an obstacle to overcome. Bad timing. Societal pressures. A global pandemic… The path to true love never does run smooth – especially at the moment – but trust us when we say 2020 isn’t a year of unhappily ever after. Why? Love always prevails. Happy couples across the country are saying ‘I do’ to small, intimate weddings despite the COVID-19 crisis. The guest list might be smaller and there may be less grandeur but after months apart from families and loved ones, weddings are treasured more now than ever before.

WEDDING TRENDS: SOMETHING NEW When it comes to wedding trends this season there’s one thing to keep in mind – small is beautiful. Restrictions may play havoc with your guest list but an intimate wedding with those who matter most promises to be a truly unforgettable affair. An opportunity to join together after months apart to celebrate love in all of its glory, a close-knit wedding is a special moment not only for the happy couple but friends and family too. But what trends should we look out for?

A FLORAL TOUCH Small might be beautiful when it comes to the guest list but when it comes to flowers for your special day, bigger is better. Couples are opting for opulent floral arrangements to add an extra sense of occasion to socially distanced weddings. Bright hues, dried flowers and pampas grass are must haves.

SOMETHING BLUE Classic blue was heralded as the Pantone colour of the year for 2020 and it’s a hue making its way into weddings this season. Whether it’s incorporated into the bouquet, the bridesmaids’ dresses or the groomsmen’s ties it promises to bring a classic touch to the day. Blue-tiful.

SAVE THE DATE Weddings are no longer just weekend events as Monday to Friday nuptials become more popular. With couples struggling to rearrange weddings postponed during lockdown and the race for 2021 dates underway, more people are choosing a midweek option for their special day.

KNOW THE RULES The most important part of wedding planning in 2020, and the foreseeable future, is keeping a close eye on the ever changing rules and regulations surrounding ceremonies. Weddings were banned when the country locked down on March 23, with 73,600 weddings and civil partnership ceremonies affected. The good news is ceremonies are permitted again, but with specific rules. Guidance varies across the four nations so it’s vital to check what guidelines and rules are in place at the time of your wedding. As ROX Magazine goes to press, rules include:

MAKE A STATEMENT Just because weddings are smaller it doesn’t mean your dream dress needs to be put on hold. Fashion forward brides are taking inspiration from Mrs Bieber and opting for statement veils while others are looking to fashion powerhouses Dior and Chanel for statement sleeves and embellishments.

• In England 15 people are permitted at both wedding ceremonies and sit-down receptions. Wedding ceremonies in areas under “very high” alert can still go ahead but there can be no reception. • Up to 20 people can attend a wedding ceremony in Scotland. • Northern Irish weddings are limited to 25 people from October 19 for at least four weeks and receptions are not permitted. • Receptions of up to 30 people are allowed in Wales. • Up to 50 people can attend a wedding in tier zero, up to 20 in tiers one to three and limited to five people for areas in tier four in Scotland. Guidelines state that social distancing should be adhered to and ceremonies should be as short as possible. You should also check additional measures that may be in place not only in the area where you are getting married but also with your venue and suppliers.

RETURN THE FAVOUR

It might seem daunting but don’t panic, there is a host of people on hand to help make the planning process as simple and stress-free as possible.

Traditional wedding favours are taking a back seat this season. Gone are the mini bottles of booze and sweets as couples give guests personalised hand sanitisers and masks as a thank you for their support. The perfect mix of adorable and practical. www.rox.co.uk

THE BEAUTY OF

TWEAKMENTS There's no need to go under the knife to get amazing results. We talk to one of the UK's leading aesthetic nurses, Frances Turner Trail, to get the lowdown on the art of tweakments.

No one is alone when it comes to our desire to keep our face and bodies and feeling their best. But not everyone wants to go under the knife to achieve that must sought after youthful look. But now we don’t have to with a boom in availability and choice of non-surgical tweakments. Tweakments are the buzzword in the aesthetics industry right now and gaining in popularity by the day. Essentially ‘Tweakments’can be used to describe subtle and barely noticeable cosmetic procedures that subtly enhance our features without a full scale surgical procedure. The beauty of ‘tweakments’ is their subtlety, often undetectable to the eye, they make us look and feel fresher and younger but ultimately don’t change the anatomy of our face. Scottish cosmetic Nurse Frances Turner Traill, who leads the way in safe injectable has never been more in demand for her highly skilled work which focuses on subtly enhancing and rebalancing your facial features. Tweakments are especially gaining ground in the post COVID world, with more and more people are discovering the benefits of aesthetic enhancements, and many are blaming the Zoom calls. “Unflattering and unfiltered Zoom angles are unforgiving and we are spending more time looking at our faces than ever before says TurnerTraill. Frances’s practices reopened in August

and she currently has a waiting lists in both her Glasgow & Inverness clinics and has just released more availability to cope with demand. We asked Frances guide us through what’s hot right now in the world of aesthetics and what tweakments & new treatments we should be investing in before the festive season, because let’s face it we still want to look and feel our best no matter how many people are allowed to come to the party!

ome 2021, Hublot and Ferrari will have been working together on some of the world’s most desirable watches for a decade – on track to overtake the carmaker’s dalliance with GirardPerregaux back in the Nineties. Cast an eye over the current collection on the ROX website and its hard not to be drawn to the bold industrial designs of the Big Bang range, or the spectacular carbon-fibre Techframe chronograph and its intricate tourbillon movement. But for watch fans looking for something a little less extreme, something that could fit into any activity any day of the week, from a day at the track to a meeting at the office, 168

and, dare we say it, something slightly more affordable, there’s the Hublot Classic Fusion. It was the original Hublot, or 'porthole’ launched by MDM Genève’s Italian founder Carlo Crocco forty years ago – reissued in all its retro glory this season, complete with Crocco’s revolutionary fusion of gold and vanilla-scented rubber strap (see page 104). And now, with the introduction of the Roma, there’s a perfect Ferrari to go with it. Taking inspiration not from Ferrari’s current F1 cars, but from Ferrari’s glamorous grand tourers of the 1950s and early 1960s, the Roma’s clean, elegant surfaces and striking minimalist, body-colour grille

represent a radical departure and a clear attempt to attract a new audience. An audience that, perhaps, was never particularly drawn by the scarlet theatrics of Maranello’s grande dame. Think of the Roma as a clean and classy dress watch to the mid-engined F8 Tributo’s macho chronograph. Beneath that skin, though, it’s business as usual. Which means the same focus on performance and handling you’d expect from any Ferrari. The twin-turbo V8 makes 620hp, which is channelled to the ground through a new eight-speed paddle-shift transmission. Rocketing from 0-62mph in 3.4sec might take your breath away, but at £170,984, the price – some £33k below an F8 Tributo’s - is designed to get the pulse cruising sedately, rather than racing. Slip on that Classic Fusion and slip yourself into a Prancing Horse designed for the everyday. (Just make sure every one of those days involves a sweeping rural B-road or two.)

rom cars to watches, clothes to carpets, mass production has changed the world. It has enabled engineers to produce large quantities of high quality goods, each one a perfect facsimile of the last, and at a price that makes them accessible to a far greater number of people. It’s thanks to this process, and the efficient quartz movement, that you can buy a TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch for a very reasonable £1,050 – though it looks so good, and, to the casual eye, so much like its more expensive siblings, you may choose to keep that last part to yourself. And it’s thanks to mass production that Henry Ford was able to put so many people behind the wheel of a car for the first time. More recently, how luxury carmaker Aston Martin was able to finally iron out the reliability niggles it euphemistically referred to as ‘bespoke concerns’.

170

www.rox.co.uk

But not everyone wants to know they’re buying the same car, or watch, their neighbour already owns, or could own. The mostly anonymous, but definitely wealthy, customers who commissioned the Aston Martin, RollsRoyce and Ferrari one-offs pictured here were adamant they didn’t ever want to suffer the ignominy of bumping into an identical machine. Creating bespoke cars is nothing new, of course. In the first half of the 20th century, when cars were still constructed by dropping the bodywork onto a separate chassis frame containing the suspension and running gear, it wasn’t unusual for wealthy clients to order a Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Alfa Romeo or Ferrari and have it delivered to a separate coachbuilder where it would be topped with a unique body. The advent of modern unitised body and chassis structures meant that happened less frequently after the war

ROX MAGAZINE

MOTORING

because it became uneconomical to make significant changes to cars. Many of the legendary British coachbuilders and Italian carrozzeria – once-famous names like Touring of Milan, Ghia, Vignale, Hooper and James Young – were forced to close their doors, or were swallowed up by larger companies, often being relegated to denoting posh trim levels on otherwise very ordinary family cars. But where there’s a will, and a suitably large cheque, there’s a way. Increasingly in recent years luxury carmakers have themselves filled the gap left by the traditional coachbuilders, indulging the whims and imagination of their wealthiest super fans, working together to create a car guaranteed to be the only one of its kind ever made. The most striking of the current crop is the Aston Martin Victor, inspired by the muscular 1980s Vantage and named after Victor Gauntlett, the marque’s chairman during that period (one in which Aston sold another very special one-off, the wedge-shaped 220+mph Bulldog, which coincidentally is being restored after a 30-year slumber, project-led by Victor’s charismatic son Richard). An anonymous Belgian collector commissioned Aston’s Q special projects division to create the Victor, which is built around a decade-old prototype for Aston’s long-dead and largely-forgotten £1m, 220mph One77 supercar. While clearly a homage to the old Vantage, the 836bhp V12-powered Victor cleverly integrates cues from modern Astons, borrowing rear lights from the Valkyrie, vents from the new DBX SUV, and is constructed from very contemporary carbon fibre, rather than steel or aluminium. That same fusion of old and new is evident in the Ferrari Omologato. Built from a modern 812 Superfast, it tips a hat to the most famous Ferrari of all, the 1960s 250 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato). The Omologato is the 10th oneoff from Ferrari’s Special Projects department, set up in 2008. Previous clients include Eric Clapton, who commissioned Ferrari to make a thennew 458 look like a 1970s 512 BB, his favourite Ferrari road car. Ferrari won’t say how much Clapton, or any of the other one-off clients, pay to have their dreams made real, but the final bill for the Omologato was likely to be in the region of £2-3m – not cheap, but the significantly less expensive (and numerous) than one of the 39 original 250 GTOs, which have changed hands for up to £52m. And significantly less than the £10m one Rolls-Royce fan paid to have a Phantom Coupé transformed with the addition of striking art-deco boat-tail rear bodywork in 2017. The client asked Rolls to incorporate design cues from his private jets and superyachts, as well as some from his favourite Rolls-Royce models of the 1920s and 1930s. That spectacular sweep of tapering glass is the standout feature, but the interior is no less special, featuring a stunning split-level Macassar Ebony and open-pore paldao wooden deck where the back seats would normally be. Unveiled at the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d’Este event in 2017, overlooking the limpid shores of Lake Como, the ‘Sweptail’ was the most expensive new car ever. At least until Bugatti celebrated the marque’s 110-year anniversary at Geneva’s motor show in 2019, by unveiling the Chiron-based ‘Voiture Noire’, and found a buyer happy enough to sign a cheque for around £12m to make it his and his alone. Huracán and V12 Aventador supercars. “We weren’t directly involved in the design of the watches,” says the head of Lamborghini’s ‘Centro Stile’ Mitja Borkert, “But their lightweight construction approach fits perfectly with Lamborghini’s reputation for employing weight-saving technologies. There are also analogies in the design.” He can say that again. Just take the Excalibur Spider Aventador S’s RD103SQ calibre, inspired by the aforementioned 6.4-litre engine, which snarls beneath a glass-louvered cowling, supported by the X-shaped ‘Powerdome’. A motif echoing the latter tops the movement’s so-called ‘Duotor’ configuration, featuring not one but two balance wheels, each tilted at 45° in a ‘V’. This isn’t just a cute allusion to engine cylinders; the 2 x 4Hz oscillators are linked by a 90º differential to even-out ‘wobbles’ and provide better resistance to gravity’s wearing effect on pivot points. This year’s Excalibur Essenza SCV12, in tribute to 2020’s track-only Squadra Corse evolution of the Aventador, strips things back further. It has lifted the Powerdome bridgework to expose the watch’s winding barrel, shaped like an alloy rim, and also presents each customer unprecedented opportunity to customise. What’s more, the watches’ engines are mounted in chassis straight out of Sant’Agata. Clinging to your wrist with barely noticeable downforce, despite their 45mm diameter, the Lambo-edition Excaliburs come encased in C-SMC carbon, or carbon-sheet moulding compound – lightweight, tough, and incredibly tricky to machine within the sort of tolerances demanded by a water-resistant watch. All adding up to a pricetag not too far shy of a brand-new Lamborghini Huracán. Which brings us to Roger Dubuis’ new bestseller – across the board, not just among its Raging Bulls. The constantly evolving Excalibur Spider Huracán timepieces boast strut bars of their own, this time supporting the watchmaker’s

own take on a V10 engine: a single balance at 12 o’clock, ticking at a 12ºC tilt for optimal finetuning on the watchmaker’s bench, and optimal gravity compensation. We especially love the techno sculpture of the skeleton dial, cleverly reminding you of the Huracán car’s air intakes. Appropriate given the sharp intake of breath both machines provoke.

GADGET MAN

GADGET MAN You don’t have to be technical wizard to enjoy a good gadget – as Switzerland's finest watchmakers continue to prove, you just need a wild imagination or sometimes just a sense of fun. As our old friend Inspector Gadget would say: “Wowsers.”

ASTRONOMIA TOURBILLON SOLAR ZODIAC JACOB & CO.

Jacob Arabo has come a long way, baby. The tutti-frutti celebmagnets of the mid-Noughties are ancient history as the former Manhattan diamond dealer now nurtures a menagerie of breathtaking ‘Astronomia’ haute complications, made with Jérémie Senggen’s Studio 7h38 on Lac Neuchâtel. The wristbound orrery you see here features a dual-axis tourbillon orbiting the sapphire case every 10 minutes on a carrousel. Along for the ride are a spinning globe, an hours and minutes dial, which replaces each hour with every respective sign of the zodiac, plus planets comprising a central yellow sapphire (288 facets, 1.5cts) and an orbiting amethyst, topaz and peridot, all cut in-house at Jacob's stateside atelier. £POA

BIG BANG E UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE HUBLOT

The group stages of the Champions League are close to conclusion, and keeping time on every match so far has been Hublot’s special referees’ version of its ‘e connected’ smartwatch, cast in a superlightweight composite and boasting goal-line technology that signals to the referee when the whole of the ball has crossed the goal line. Now, 500 football fans can get their wrists on a ceramic version, cast in UEFA Champions League core blue. Owners will have various dials to choose from, downloadable from the Hublot Store. Customisable to match kit colours, the interface is powered by Wear OS by GoogleTM and comes loaded with the new Hublot Loves Football UEFA Champions League app. Gearhead heaven. £6,000

ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE CONCEPT AUDEMARS PIGUET

The 'Concept' was first unveiled in 2002 as a 30th-anniversary tribute to Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak – itself the very horological embodiment of 'avant-garde' back in 1972, as the world's first luxury sports watch. Not quite a Royal Oak, not quite an Offshore, the Concept’s ultra-hard Alacrite 602 case was more rounded to highlight Genta’s signature octagonal bezel and its eight hexagonal screws. The dial was left off, exposing the micro-mechanics as moving sculpture – a bold, architectural approach that's influenced countless pretenders and persisted right up to this year's Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT, where 'flying' could believably be replaced by 'shooting through hyperspace'. £POA
