Make Space for Girls - Rowntree Park June 2023

Page 1

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Join us this June in ‘making space for girls’ in Rowntree Park. We have a packed month of events aimed primarily at older girls, ages 10-18, with some activities also suitable for younger girls and women. The aim of the June programme is to get girls and women into the public space, trying new things, meeting new people and having fun! Through weekends and weekday evenings of June, we invite you to come along and get involved.

Most of the events are free to attend, but some need booking in advance. Take a look at the programme and get involved!

Why do we need to ‘Make Space for Girls‘?

The June programme is linked to the work we have been doing over the last two years looking at older girls and Rowntree Park and what the Friends of Rowntree Park can do to encourage more girls to use the park. Our work has been influenced by charity ‘Make Space for Girls’ who aim to raise awareness that the design of parks can exclude older girls.

Research shows that after the age of 8, girls’ use of parks drops. Spending time in parks can be beneficial to physical and mental health. There are numerous reasons as to why girls’ use of parks drops, however looking at how to both improve the physical space to make parks more welcoming to girls, plus having more events/activities aimed at girls that encourages them back into parks should start to make a difference.

As a result of our own local research, our project focuses on two key areas to help encourage older girls to use Rowntree Park:

• Trying to improve the physical space – this includes new play equipment.

• Events and activities aimed at girls.

You can read more about our project here: https://rowntreepark.org.uk/make-space-for-girls-older-girls-and-rowntree-park/

A huge thank you to all the amazing local businesses and organisations who are part of our programme of events. They have volunteered their time and resources to run sessions.

Thank you to the Micklegate Ward who are supportive of our project for girls.

28.6.23 WEDNESDAY
27.6.23 TUESDAY

Let‘s make a difference!

We hope you enjoy the June programme and get involved.

Help us spread the word and raise awareness of the programme and events, but also of the need to create better, and safer parks for older girls (and everyone).

Please do tag us on social media and send on any feedback.

Find out more about our ‘Older Girls and Rowntree Park Project’ here:

https://rowntreepark.org.uk/make-space-for-girls-older-girls-and-rowntree-park/

Better, and safer, parks for girls and women

Our work has been featured in a range of publications and research. Most recently, Abigail Gaines of the Friends of Rowntree Park presented the work at a national conference at Leeds University on ‘Women and Girls’ Safety in Parks’. The conference was linked to new guidance released commissioned by the West Yorkshire Mayor and carried out by Leeds University in conjunction with Make Space for Girls, Green Flag, Keep Britain Tidy and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Abigail has also spoken with Make Space for Girls on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and also BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine Show. By keeping the issue of the need for better, and safer, parks for women and girls going we are all helping raise awareness and helping make change happen.

Help us continue to make a difference

We are looking for funding to continue with our project – including business sponsorship for equipment requested by older girls. If you as an individual, a business or an organisation wants to be involved in our project in any way, get in touch - we’d love to hear from you!
