ore than two decades ago, Dr. Daniel Daube relocated from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Bay County/Panama City, Florida, to open Gulf Coast Facial Plastics and ENT Center. Dr. Daube has built his practice on three important qualities: truth, competence, and reputation — things everyone should consider when shopping for a surgeon. In fact, treating patients with respect and dignity is part of their mission statement.

Your ‘Best’ Fitness Tracker To find the activity band that’s best for you, start asking questions

By Rosanne Dunkelberger ONCE UPON A TIME, long, long — OK, three years — ago, there were pretty much two options for strapping a device on your wrist to track your daily activity: a Fitbit or the Jawbone.

But that’s forever in tech time and, today, there are hundreds of choices when it comes to wearable devices, alternatively known as fitness trackers or activity bands. While the originals were technologically advanced and did a great job tracking steps, calorie burn and sleep, newer iterations from the original manufacturers as well as other companies — from the ubiquitous Apple to a China’s cheap, colorful Xiaomi — are packing in more new features every day.

For those who want to join the revolution, upgrade from their activity band 1.0 or replace one that’s gone kaput, question is obvious: What’s the best fitness tracker for me?

And the answer is: It depends. To find your perfect band, you’re going to need to ask yourself questions — lots and lots of questions.

For starters, what do you want your tracker to do?

Count steps? You can do that with a pedometer. Even the fanciest versions only cost $20, are easy to operate and let you know how close you’re getting to that 10,000 steps-a-day goal.

Most new-generation fitness trackers also will estimate how many calories you’re burning, your heart rate, how many miles you’ve walked and how much sleep you’re getting. They come with apps to give you a long-term look at your activity level; and can be synced via wire or Bluetooth.

If you’re planning to wear it all day, every day, style and comfort are key. Do you have sensitivity to Latex? Do you care about the look of wearing a “rubber” bracelet? Misfit’s Shine devices are simple and pretty on their own, but a blinged out Swarvoski version ($249) turns your tracker into statement jewelry. Swiss watchmaker Mondaine has a beautiful (albeit pricey at $850) line that has the look of a quality analog timepiece, but with the technical innards to also serve as an activity tracker.

Are you on the move? Garmin’s Vivoactive ($250) might be the one for you. The folks who brought us the car GPS can track your running, swimming, biking or golfing using the same technology.

Here are some other considerations: Is it easy to charge and sync?

What’s my budget? Is it reliable? Can it easily connect to other users for encouragement and competition? Does it need a chest strap to monitor my heartbeat? Do I want it to track general movement or athletic performance? Does it play well with other fitness apps? (For example, while bands are good at tracking how many calories you burn, it’s going to take a different app, such as My Fitness Pal, for you to track how many calories are going in.)

Once you’ve figured out what you want to use it for and your band budget, let the internet research begin! Reviews, product comparisons and best-of lists abound. The website wareable.com is dedicated to these devices and offers up detailed stories daily about their features and reliability.

HIKING

In Motion

Moving from walker to hiker is as easy as 1, 2, 3

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALKING are widely recognized, and lots of people are using this form of exercise as their vehicle to fitness. You can spot walkers at the gym, on high school tracks, in the malls and on neighborhood streets. You may even be one yourself.

Did you know that, as a walker, you’re halfway to being a hiker? Many walkers don’t see themselves as hikers, and it’s unclear why. Hiking isn’t camping. It isn’t rock climbing. It isn’t backpacking. Hiking is walking ... on a trail.

Here are three easy steps to transform from walker to hiker.

Step 1 — Outfit Yourself You will certainly see everything from flip-flops to running shoes on the trail, but hiking boots give the best protection against stubbing a toe or rolling an ankle.

Even along the Emerald Coast, with almost no elevation change, rocks and roots can still be factors. Boots lend stability when navigating obstacles.

Hiking boots are designed with different features in mind, and proper fit is essential.

Michael Markey of Intracoastal Outfitters in Pensacola believes the correct boot can be the difference between a great day of hiking and exiting the trail early. Sore feet,

tired feet and the dreaded blister can all be addressed through the right boot.

After boots, there are a few other essentials that most people already own. Many hikers prefer shorts, but loose-fitting pants will protect against scratches, some bugs and poisonous plants. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and bug spray and you are outfitted for a basic, short hike.

Step 2 — Find a Hiking Partner Hiking, much like swimming, should never be done alone. Remember, you are in nature, and nature is unpredictable. The danger of injury is a reality no matter how careful you plan to be. A twisted ankle on a lightly traveled trail is more than uncomfortable; it can lead to serious trouble.

Solution? Recruit a hiking partner. Your hiking partner should not be an online date you are meeting for the first time. It is not safe to be on a secluded trail with someone you hardly know. Protect yourself by bringing a friend, or connect with a legitimate hiking club.

Helen Wigersma, chair of the Western Gate chapter of the Florida Trail Association, encourages would-be hikers to contact their local chapter for weekly activities, including guided hikes. She says all chapters offer opportunities for people to get

acquainted with the trails in their area and emphasizes that folks should not be intimidated. All skill levels are welcome.

Step 3 — Pick a Hike Residents of the Emerald Coast are graced with easy access to spectacular trails.

The nearly 1,300-mile Florida National Scenic Trail, or Florida Trail, starts at Big Cypress National Preserve and ends at the Gulf Islands National Seashore at Fort Pickens in Pensacola. Proximity, however, is not the only consideration when selecting a trail, especially if you are a novice. The wind, sun and loose sand on this leg of the Florida Trail are not for everyone.

Other trails will take you through sawgrass or wooded areas where the sand is harder, making for a different, possibly more enjoyable, experience. Try a variety of short hikes in various ecosystems to explore the options, and in no time you will identify your favorites.

Time to lace up your boots and get out there. Soon, signs that your inner hiker is taking over will be as clear as the marks on a well-blazed trail. You can look forward to amassing trail maps, creating a top 10 list of all-time favorite hikes and planning trips around trails you want to experience.

When I’m 65

Don’t wait until retirement to make plans for the Medicare years

By Rochelle Koff BARBARA KIRKSEY knows first-hand the challenges of navigating the Medicare system.

She and her husband, Fred, weren’t aware of a technicality when signing up for the prescription drug coverage plan, so he now pays a $13 penalty each month, for as long as he lives.

“The same thing happened to a family member,” said Kirksey, a Monticello great-grandmother and registered nurse.

“I wanted to prevent other people from falling into that trap.”

For five years, Kirksey has been volunteering as a counselor for Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elderly, or SHINE, program run by the state Department of Elder Affairs and the Florida Area Agency on Aging.

“The rules get so complicated,” said Joey Davis of Pace, one of 12 SHINE volunteers serving clients in four North Florida counties. “It can get quite discouraging for some people.”

Coping with Medicare is just one of the issues people face when they reach that big number: 65. But it’s a major one and a common concern in Florida.

There are an estimated 4.8 million residents who are 60 and over in the state, with Florida ranking first in the nation for percentage of elders (about 25 percent).

“Eighty-five-plus is the fastest growing group we have in Florida,” said Ashley Chambers, director of communications for the State Department of Elder Affairs.

“The most paralyzing component is

thinking you have to face Medicare yourself, and that’s not the case here,” said Jeff Johnson, state director of Florida AARP. “It doesn’t hurt to have a second set of eyes take a look at what you’re thinking.”

While there are various classes offering Medicare help, SHINE is the major resource for helping people understand the process — and much more. These volunteers, who go through an intensive training and vetting process, are located in 11 areas around the state, offering phone and personal counseling. Their services are free, unbiased and confidential.

Counselors also help Medicare recipients apply for financial assistance programs and truly understand their benefits.

“One of the best feelings of my life is when I sit there with a client and I save them money,” said Davis. “They’re very grateful.”

Experts advise those eligible for Medicare who are still working to apply for Medicare Part A, since it can supplement their health insurance. It’s also vital to learn about penalties and just what to expect from Medicare coverage, even for those who don’t need it yet.

People often expect Medicare to be their total safety net, and that’s not the case, experts say.

“Use the resources that are out there,” Chambers advises seniors. “The bottom line is there are a lot of decisions to make.

Don’t avoid it. Don’t procrastinate. Get educated and empower yourself with the help of a program like SHINE.”
