f you find something you have a passion for, you are just lucky. Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa guests are lucky, because no one is more delighted to do what they do than Darrel Smith, the lead concierge. “I enjoy getting people to smile — that puts me in a happy place.” As a self-professed “globetrotter” and “foodie,” this 35-year veteran of the hospitality industry doesn’t make any suggestion lightly; he knows guests rely on him to make the best choices. “I don’t recommend a company I don’t know or a restaurant I have not visited,” he says. And figuring out just what that

experience is for each guest, is what this seasoned concierge lives for. “That’s what’s fun,” he says. “Getting into a conversation and finding out what they really want.” One of Smith’s many talents, can’t be taught or learned in school. “Its about reading people well,” he says. “I really enjoy that part. You guide them in a way that gets the entire family excited about being here.” Smith loves to arm guests with all that the hotel offers so they are able to fully enjoy their stay. “We truly do have something for every traveler, right here at the hotel,” he says, “what’s more, you can experience plenty without ever having to leave the property.”

• Having been in the industry for more than 30 years, I’ve worked for many different hotels. I can honestly say this has, by far, been the best experience of my career. Visiting Hilton Sandestin Beach can only be described as coming home to family. The staff is committed to the property, to each other, and to giving our customers the best experience possible. More than anything as a customer, Hilton Sandestin Beach caters to your needs by anticipating them before you even arrive. They put a lot of time and effort into the upkeep and maintenance of the property while also ensuring customer feedback is taken into account to promise the best stay possible. It’s unlike any other resort. It provides experiences of a lifetime to vacationers and groups alike. I think that is truly a testament to the commitment of everyone involved — to be the best full service resort that we can be!

iles of sugarwhite sand. Sunshine that warms the soul. Emerald waves softly crashing at your feet. Picturesque sunsets painting the horizon. During the summer months, you can imagine just how busy the breakfast shift becomes, and usually there is a wait for seating. It was in the middle of one of these busy mornings that I had the pleasure of meeting a very upbeat and excited guest named Cindy. Cindy was visiting with two of her friends on a “girl’s weekend getaway.” I had the opportunity to talk with her about her plans for the weekend (which of course included sun, fun and spa treatments) and through the course of our conversation, she politely informed me she would be referred to as “Princess Cindy” for the rest of her stay. The next morning there was a wait to be seated in the restaurant. When Cindy approached the host stand to put her party’s name on our wait list, I greeted her with “Good morning, Miss Cindy.” She couldn’t believe I had remembered her name from the day before. Not only had I remembered her name, I made sure to put her on the wait list as “Princess, party of three.” When it came time to seat her, our staff announced “Princess party of three” for all the other guests to hear. She was so excited and entered the restaurant in a true, royal fashion. Also unbeknownst to her was the crown we had made (out of a coffee filter) with festive lettering that proclaimed “Princess Cindy” on it. We presented the crown to the guest and placed it on her head. She proudly wore the crown through her entire breakfast, smiling from ear to ear. It was truly a fun way to honor and share in her fabulous weekend getaway. Cindy has since become a return guest, and I have the pleasure of serving her and her family during each visit.

BANQUETS/FOOD & BEVERAGE Working in banquets, I get the chance to be a part of many events both on an intimate and large scale. The weddings we host here at Hilton Sandestin Beach are among my favorite moments at work. Being a small part of the most special day for these couples is the best feeling in the world. I really enjoy the multicultural weddings that take place here — there is so much that goes into putting them together; they become a full weekend of festivities. From the music to the beautiful place settings, colorful garments and detailed decorations, the attention to every intricate detail shines through. The most memorable and fulfilling role is working in banquets and being a part of these unforgettable moments.

A DREAM COME TRUE

I

stayed at the Hilton Sandestin Beach recently for a ladies retreat and wanted to take my mother to the beach. She hasn’t been able to go to the beach in well over 30 years due to multiple sclerosis. I asked for a beach wheelchair, and CHRIS HERNANDEZ from beach services not only brought the wheelchair to us, he also wheeled Mom down to the beach, helped her stand in the water, and put her hand in the water so she could splash some on her face. He stayed with us for about 30 minutes to make sure Mom was safe — even catching her once when she started to fall. Chris helped make my mom’s dream of going back to the beach come true. He wouldn’t accept a tip, saying he didn’t usually get to be a part of making someone’s dream come true — and that was enough for him. Looking back at the pictures I took, it appears that Chris, a perfect stranger to us, enjoyed this trip to the beach as much as my mom, sister and I did. I will treasure that day forever! CLAUDIA HOWELL-PHILLIPS MASSAGE SUPERVISOR, SERENITY BY THE SEA SPA

I have met so many guests over the course of my 17-year career in massage services, but my favorites are the ones that return year after year to Hilton Sandestin Beach. There is a specific group that comes each year; they play hard, have few regrets and take just a little bit longer to recover. But they have become like friends to us — their kindness and sincerity drives me to want to go above and beyond for them during their visit. I am so thankful to everyone that continues to join us here at Serenity and Hilton Sandestin Beach, making every moment count.

CRYSTAL FLORES, PICNIX POOLSIDE MARKET My favorite thing about working at Hilton Sandestin Beach is meeting families that become like friends to you. One summer while I was bartending at The Sandbar, a family of maybe six or seven came down from the pool deck and sat at the bar. It was their first day on property, and they were so friendly, laughing, smiling and ready to have a good time. Their happiness was infectious, and we thoroughly enjoyed our day, so much so that they stayed until the bar closed at sunset. The next morning, I went to open The Sandbar, and again they came down from the pool deck and promptly took their seats around the bar top. They were such a fun family. Eventually, I realized they had spent their entire week with me down at The Sandbar. It was such a good feeling to know that they enjoyed my service and hospitality enough to spend their entire visit at The Sandbar instead of in our other food and beverage outlets. I can’t wait to welcome them back again next summer.

KATIE WALLACE

Each year, I look forward to what we call the “100 Days of Summer” from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It’s during this time of year that I get to see many of our return guests — those that have become like friends over the years and those that continue to return with their growing families. Being a part of the Hilton Sandestin Beach family for over five years, I have had the pleasure of meeting lots of guests and hearing their stories. I love that I get to be at Barefoot’s each summer to continue being a part of creating memories with my favorite guests. 24 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2021

ALEX LOVETT, BEACH SERVICES This is my fifth summer working beach services at Hilton Sandestin Beach, but I’ve grown up knowing and loving this hotel. My father has worked here for over 20 years and is currently the Director of Events. During the summertime, there are a few groups that my dad works closely with that also do special beach sets during their stay. After the group meets, they come down to the beach, and we have the pleasure of ensuring they have the best beach day possible. It’s always great to see these guests year after year, and it’s a special experience to be able to work closely with my dad as well. 26 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2021

As a PBX phone operator, I speak with many guests throughout the day, quickly responding to their immediate needs. There are the occasional instances where I have the opportunity to speak with a guest for longer than just a few moments. Usually this occurs before they arrive, when they have several questions about their upcoming stay. My favorite part about these conversations is being able to share knowledge about the local area, or when I can offer ideas about the best time of year they should plan to visit. For instance, if a guest asks about the best time of year to watch a sunset, I like to tell them October or November are ideal as the area is quieter, the water is still fairly warm, and the sun sets directly over the Gulf. Other times they might ask me about the night-life scene, and I always recommend Rum Runners in The Village of Baytowne Wharf. The dueling pianos are an absolute favorite of many that visit the area, and the food and drinks are great as well.

F

or 37 years, Hilton Sandestin’s beaches have beckoned waterlovers near and far like a siren’s song. We come to dig our toes into the sugar-white sand, hear the rise and fall of the waves, breathe in the salty air, refresh in the crystal-clear waters and bask under the radiant Florida sun. The sea is such an incredible elixir for all that ails us, we wish it could be bottled so we could buy it. Well, thanks to Serenity by the sea Spa, essentially you can.

MODUS PHOTOGRAPHY MODUS PHOTOGRAPHY

Let your worries fade away as the experts at Serenity by the sea Spa work their magic.

Always on the lookout for new health trends, Director of Spa Services Shanelle Lucas, was excited to discover a new therapeutic all organic seaweed-based treatment line in Voya Skincare. The line was inspired by the 300-year-old tradition of spa baths, an old-world indigenous therapy treatment in Ireland. “Seaweed naturally absorbs its nourishment from the sea. As a result, it contains countless minerals, vitamins and beneficial ingredients in high concentrations,” Lucas explains. “And the

fact that Voya products contain extracts of wild seaweed, which is sustainably hand-harvested, is a big plus.” Being a beachfront spa, adding a seaweed-infused skincare treatment just made sense. You can experience the all organic Voya line in nearly every Serenity spa service, from an add-on enhancement to a nail treatment to an 80-minute Seaweed Leaf Wrap. This therapeutic ritual involves exfoliation, massage and a scalp treatment; it softens the skin from head to toe by using organic seaweed leaves to scrub and wrap your body. As phenomenal as it is, Voya Skincare is not the only reason why this 14,500-square-foot, sea-inspired facility lives up to its name. With its attentive wellness team led by Lucas, it delivers award-winning spa treatments, salon services and houses a state-of-the-art fitness center. “People should focus on health and fitness this year,” Lucas says. “They need spas now more than ever, and Serenity is here for everyone.” And when she says everyone, she means it. Teens are also coming in for skincare focused services. (Minors are welcome to schedule massages as long as an adult accompanies them.) Self-care is important for men, too. According to Lucas, they are “going wild” for beard treatment and skincare line, Organic Male. Gentlemen can sample it at the four-step Grooming Bar in the men’s lounge. By making appointments in advance and spreading them out all week, Lucas explains that spa goers can take full advantage of using all of Serenity’s amenities — private lounge, whirlpool spa, steam room, sauna and fitness center. “More than ever, people want to get away to relax and renew themselves,” she says. “They need some ‘me time’ for their mental health.”

SETTING YOUR COURSE Immaculate links and state-of-the-art clay await golfers and tennis players

F

air weather, sublime settings and top-flight courses and courts make the Emerald Coast a paradise for golfers and tennis players. See for yourself why experts at Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, Golfweek and Florida Golf News rave about the four championship golf courses that Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa guests have access to through the Sandestin Resort. If you swing better with a racquet than a club, the resort

has you covered with 15 tennis courts — 12 of them being HydroGrid clay. The tennis center, set amid beautiful landscaping, includes private tennis courts, a renowned Pro Shop, a shingled clubhouse with decks, private lessons with certified staff, group clinics, children’s tennis activities and six pickleball courts. A free shuttle runs between the tennis center and the resort. To reserve a court, rent equipment or check on the latest tennis happenings, call (850) 267-7060 or speak with our onsite concierge team.

THE LINKS GOLF CLUB The Links course, the resort’s original course, has been welcoming and challenging golfers for more than four decades. Designed by renowned architect Tom Jackson, The Links treats golfers to breathtaking views of Choctawhatchee Bay and Baytowne Marina. Not only do the coastal breezes help tame the Florida sun, but they also offer a good challenge on this true links-style course that has five water-front holes. The Links course has four sets of tees to choose from and challenges golfers of any skill level. Take a swing on a course that’s been named one of the “Top 100 Courses in Florida” by Florida Golf News.

BURNT PINE GOLF CLUB Burnt Pine, designed by Rees Jones, brother of designer Robert Trent Jones Jr., offers golfers a one-of-a-kind experience throughout its expansive 7,000 yards, which include rolling fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The front nine at Burnt Pine takes players through pine forests and wetlands, while the back nine spotlights charming views of Choctawhatchee Bay. Golf Magazine has called Burnt Pine the “Crown Jewel of Florida Golf.” Seasonal and limited tee times are available.

RAVEN GOLF CLUB

Make sure to pack your clubs or racquets so you can enjoy all that the resort has to offer.

It’s not every day you get to play on a course where the pros sank birdies. The Raven Golf Club, twice a stop on the PGA Champions Tour, affords you that luxury. Some of the country’s best amateur golfers played Raven as part of the Division III National Championship in 2013. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., brother of Rees Jones, this course is just what the doctor ordered if you want to work every club in your bag. It meanders through wetlands, marshes and pine trees throughout Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Golf Week named Raven one of the “Best Courses You Can Play” on four occasions.

BAYTOWNE GOLF CLUB

SANDESTIN GOLF AND BEACH RESORT

Accolades galore have been written about the course at Baytowne Golf Club, and they are well-deserved. This unique course has earned a 4.5-star rating from Golf Digest and features a variety of elevation changes, which is uncommon for courses in this region. Designed by Tom Jackson, this is the only golf course along Florida’s Gulf Coast that stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to Choctawhatchee Bay. Baytowne Golf was home to the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship. The course’s five tee locations offer a challenge no matter the skill level or handicap.

DUNES PUTTING COURSE Enjoy the beachside Dunes Putting Course, day or night, for fun with the family or to brush up on your putting skills.

To reserve a tee time at any of the resort’s golf courses, call the Activities Desk at (850) 267-9500, ext. 3741. HILTONSANDESTINBEACH.COM

Big time fun and adventure for the young — and young at heart BY ZANDRA WOLFGRAM

ecret Agent Night, Pajama Party, Minions, Jurassic World, Luau Party, Carnival Time, Fiesta Party and Disney Night. Are these included on your vacation list of things to do? If not, bring your little travelers to Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, where fun is the first order of business for kids. Not sure where to start to chart your course to fun? With 18 years’ experience running the resort’s recreation program, director of recreation Tiffany Howell has plenty of helpful suggestions for your visit to the Sunshine State, beginning simply with … “just get outside and play!” For children ages 5 to 12, Kids Krew provides an exciting daily schedule of

energetic and creative activities under the watchful eyes of the resort’s 20-member recreation staff. Creative arts and crafts, silly games and fun relays are also scheduled daily during the summer season. “Kids are king here,” says recreation manager Caidan Cryar. They’re also cowboys and pirates and … well, you get the idea. From a Wild West Showdown with pony express races to “mateys walking the plank” during Pirate Pandemonium, kids rule the roost from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. “These kids love taking over during our themed parties,” Cryar says. “The only rule is to have as much fun as possible.” The program includes lunch and a Kids Krew keepsake T-shirt.

Kids Night Out gives everyone the best of all worlds. Parents can enjoy a “date night,” while their children enjoy dinner, a souvenir T-shirt and themed games and activities. Grown-up guests attending a group event can have a good time knowing little ones are having a big time in important mini meetings of their own. “We have a ball with themed group events, some past favorites including Casino Night, Carnival, Toy Story and Super Heroes — we’ve even brought in Build-a-Bear creation station so kids could make their very own plush toys to take home,” Howell says. “Our staff really get into the themes, dressing up in costumes — it’s a lot of fun for everyone.” After being cooped up must of the

year, groups of all ages are ready to get outdoors. Beach Olympics is a fun teambuilding activity for grown-ups to enjoy. Scavenger hunts and curated team events like Holey Bucket Brigade, Car Wash Relay and Fire Hydrant are a great way to strengthen team ties, while having fun. Rainy day? No problem. Come show off your PGA Tour bonafides and try your swing with our new golf simulator (must be booked in advance with a group contract). But fun isn’t limited to private parties, and kids don’t have to part from their parents for a little diversion. If the Kids Krew team has learned anything from family pool parties, tie-dying and limbo contests, it’s that the best memories are made together.

TIFFANY’S TIPS ◆ T o ensure you stake out a spot in the sand, reserve your Beach

Chair setup well in advance of your visit. Dial (850) 267-9500 when you make your hotel reservation and ask to speak with our recreation team to reserve your beach set. ◆ B efore your day of play, be sure to hit the Beach Hut to gear up for a day of fun in the sun — including complimentary beach towels. Feel free to leave the beach chairs and noodles at home. ◆ N ot up for a full day? No problem. Sign up for a half day of Kids Krew after 1 p.m. ◆ T eens (14 and older) are welcome to climb aboard a standup paddleboard or sea kayak. Don’t have your “sea legs”? No worries, a member of the beach crew will be happy to show you how. ◆ Reserve your beach set online at: HiltonSandestin.ipoolside.com

o doubt about it, Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood is a classic American steakhouse — to its marrow — featuring cuisine prepared with the best of locally sourced seasonal ingredients and a level of service unmatched in the region. Which is why AAA has declared the Seagar’s experience dining at its finest, giving it a FourDiamond rating since 2000. When you visit Seagar’s, allow plenty of time. Sit back, take in the live pianist and order a bottle of wine. With 600 labels in the wine cellar, you’re sure to find one to pair beautifully with your meal. It’s your chance to take your time to savor a superb meal in an atmosphere of luxurious indulgence. Menus are designed to take advantage of fresh, seasonal ingredients, and every aspect of a Seagar’s meal is given attention to detail that many restaurants might consider too time- and labor-intensive. The famous Dover sole, Steak Diane, Caesar salad, Banana Fosters and Cherries Jubilee are among the delicious dishes that are prepared with flair and flame at your table. Seagar’s keeps an emphasis on organic produce and seasonal food to compliment its world-class standards for fine dining excellence. The culinary team works handin-hand with local farmers and purveyors — such as Arrowhead Beef in Chipley, Florida — to keep Seagar’s menu dynamic and true to the local region. With the bounty of the Gulf of Mexico at the resort’s doorstep, seafood takes its rightful place on the menu. Indulge in options such as seared snapper and panroasted grouper, or expand your range and your palette with Maine lobster, South African cold-water lobster tails or Alaskan king crab. EXPLORE ARTIFICIAL REEFS

In 2015, eco tourists and locals alike went crazy for the new artificial reef that debuted in Grayton Beach. This manmade structure was coined Turtle Reef, as it is shaped like a sea turtle when viewed from above. As of late last summer, three other reefs taking the forms of a dolphin, a sea horse and a cobia had made their homes in the waters off Scenic Highway 30A. Like natural reefs, these habitats attracted the attention of sundry marine creatures that now live and flourish in the newfound shelters. Families are invited to snorkel and observe a colorful array of fish, marine plants and rare sea turtles as they weave through the towers of the reef. Conduct an underwater photo safari to capture the brilliance of the environment, skin-dive or stay at the surface and fish from a kayak. SWARAreefs.org

BIOPHILIA CENTER

Though the emerald-green waters of our beaches may get the most attention, visitors should know that Walton County is a natural wonderland upland, too. Fascinate your family with a visit to the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center, nestled in an enchanting longleaf pine forest in Freeport, just a short drive from the resort. The center, named for the world-renowned biologist, explores the region’s rich biodiversity by way of trails, expert staff, interactive exhibits and displays. The Biophilia Center hosts events for the benefit of conservation efforts that are open to the public upon registration. Check the center’s website for public hours and get ready to embark on an enriching adventure. EOWilsonCenter.org

EDEN GARDENS

When you meander in Eden Gardens State Park, you travel back in time. The first thing you see is an alabaster mansion known as the Wesley House. Dating to 1897, the plantation-style house is now inhabited by antiques and vintage

furnishings that provide snapshots of a bygone age. Take a guided tour or feel free to roam the grounds. Weeping willows and oaks overhang impressive, green acreage ideal for picturesque picnics on the grounds or under the pavilions and for outdoor recreation. At one end of the property is Tucker Bayou, where anglers can spend the day casting from the docks. The gardens present a vibrant collection of flowers and shrubbery yearround. Hiking trails lead visitors into the natural areas beyond the ornamental gardens. FloridaStateParks.org/parks-andtrails/eden-gardens-state-park

MORRISON SPRINGS

Morrison Springs County Park in Ponce de Leon encompasses 161 acres of preserved woodland. Trekking along in the shade of cypress and oak trees, you wind up at one of the area’s most striking natural springs. Submerged in the crystal-blue waters of the spring, which is about 250 feet in diameter, are several underwater cave systems, cementing its status as one of Florida’s finest dive sites. If your family doesn’t want to take that deep plunge, shallower depths serve ideally for swimming and kayaking. Snorkelers have the opportunity to encounter various species of bass, sunfish and carp, as well as underwater flora that thrive in this hidden paradise. Picnic areas, docks, trails and observatories supply all the necessary amenities for a perfect day. FloridaSprings.org and FloridaHikes.com/springs

TOPSAIL HILL PRESERVE

A local favorite destination, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park has it all. Its 3.2 miles of beach, tall sand dunes and rare coastal dune lakes furnish endless activities to suit your family’s taste. Take a guided hike or navigate yourself through beachside byways, wetlands and pine forests that are optimal for spotting birds wading and on the wing. Select trails are sites for caches if you’re a family of geocachers, so come prepared for an exhilarating treasure hunt. If walking’s not your style, bike

OUR MEMORIES • I was one of the contestants that won a contract to create an underwater sculpture for the Underwater Museum of Art, sponsored by the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, and my piece was sponsored by Hilton Sandestin Beach. The basis was very futuristic and revolved around recreating a reef out of man-made objects. It is intended to bring awareness to the need to invest in our planet and to revive aquatic life. My sculpture — titled “Dawn Dancers” — is 10-feet tall and composed of concrete and shells from my personal collection. The piece features a male and female seahorse doing a romantic dance before the mating period at dawn. I hope it makes people happy, makes them smile. It’s a moment in time created into a threedimensional permanent piece to commemorate a little part of our existence and humanity. Although I live in Denver and haven’t had the opportunity to personally meet the staff of Hilton Sandestin Beach, I am very appreciative of their sponsorship and support of the arts. I look forward to working with them in the future. I have much respect for Hilton Sandestin Beach for investing in artists and allowing the work of artists to be showcased publicly.

along paved paths to Campbell Lake or catch a ride on the tram to the beach. There, you can sunbathe, search for shells, swim or rent kayaks to paddle for the day. While you’re free to cast your line there, three coastal dune lakes are supreme spots for freshwater fishing. The park has full amenities including picnic pavilions, shower stations and conveniently located restrooms. FloridaStateParks.org/Park/ Topsail-Hill

UNDERWATER MUSEUM OF ART

Bringing together two of Florida’s most beloved attractions — the arts and the Gulf of Mexico — the UMA is the first underwater permanent sculpture exhibit in the U.S. The UMA is the first presentation of the Cultural Arts Alliance’s Art In Public Spaces Program and supports South Walton Artificial Reef Association’s mission of creating marine habitats and expanding fishery populations. The UMA is located in approximately 60 feet of water and at a distance of .7 miles from shore. Visitors traveling by car can access the museum via Grayton Beach State Park. Emerald Coast Scuba in Destin can schedule private charters. UMAFL.org

CREATE THE SHARD SHOP

There are plenty of souvenirs available for purchase, but why not create something of your own to take home? Create something beautiful to commemorate your trip at the Shard Shop, a one-of-a-kind studio that supplies guests with all the supplies necessary to make gorgeous works of glass. Here’s how it works: Each member of your family is given a blank canvas upon arrival. Draw out your design, and then fill it using pieces from an enormous collection of glass, shells and other objects that sparkle or shimmer. Experienced teachers guide each participant and provide a safe method of creating standout art. Whether you create a beach scene or outline your favorite quote, your finished piece will be durable and will shine in your home. 64 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2021

THE BLUE GIRAFFE

The Blue Giraffe studio and gallery is a charming establishment that captures the beauty of its location on 30A on canvas. Owned by the motherdaughter duo of Debbie Taylor and Christi Sheffield, you can feel the love emanating from the art that adorns the

space’s walls. Memorabilia from local artists is available for purchase, but your family members may choose to spend the day crafting their own pieces. The Blue Giraffe knows art takes many forms, and that’s why they offer classes that specialize in multiple areas of creativity. Choose from three different paint classes, create silk scarves or even make the old into new as you create sculptures with upcycled items. Art also takes the form of the written word, so expand your imagination as you participate in creative writing and journaling classes with experienced authors. If you’re looking for a good read to take with you to the beach, stop by the shop’s nook of books for a curated collection of bestsellers, children’s tales and cookbooks featuring local cuisine. CAA

The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) promotes the arts in our area. Founded in 1989, the CAA has nurtured cultural pursuits in our community by bringing in festivals, children’s educational programs and countless instances of funding for fine arts events. The headquarters of the CAA is the Bayou Arts Center, located in scenic Hogtown Bayou of Santa Rosa Beach, presenting more than 200 familyfriendly art classes. Learn to paint with the beach-themed hues of pastels, bold

acrylics and whimsical watercolors. If you’d like to try your hand at sculpting, ceramics and pottery classes are at your disposal. While the center exhibits its own art, you are highly encouraged to visit the galleries of its partners, such as the Foster Gallery in Sandestin. Depending on which time you’re visiting, you’ll want to check out the talents of CAA-sponsored events such as the 30A Songwriters Festival, Art Week and the Flutterby Festival. • I grew up vacationing at the Hilton Sandestin Beach when my mom’s business had their annual conference there every summer. Personally, I have enjoyed visiting Hilton Sandestin Beach for over 20 years, but my professional relationship with them began about five years ago. Every year, the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center hosts our gala at the Hilton Sandestin Beach, along with a couple of other more intimate events. The ECCAC had already been working with the team at Hilton Sandestin Beach for many years before I came on board. And each year during my tenure, I have had a pleasant experience working with them. It is no surprise as to why we choose to continue to have our gala there year after year. Their staff has always been extremely friendly and accommodating. I’ve worked closely with special events manager Angela Coteat for several years, and she always goes above and beyond for us. They cater to your needs by providing you with an “on-call” team member that is available to assist with whatever you need during the entire duration of your event. This includes while you’re setting up and breaking down as well. This particular employee is designated to ensure your event goes smoothly and that you have everything you need. In addition to being wonderful to work with, Hilton Sandestin Beach is also extremely charitable. They are always giving back to their community and have supported the ECCAC for many years. We are extremely grateful to have their continued support.

They go above and beyond in treating us like family and taking care of our musicians and hosting guest artists such as Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone and other big-name artists. From an event perspective, they do everything and more that we need to enable our events to be successfully produced. The banquet and event staff, the culinary team and the marketing department are wonderful and go above and beyond to accommodate us. Patrons notice this. It translates to the guests attending because they know a Sinfonia event at Hilton Sandestin Beach will be top-notch and well done. They are a remarkable entity that is community minded and supports so many aspects of our region and local nonprofits. You cannot find a better location locally or regionally that provides the services, space, personnel and capabilities at such a high caliber. You can expect the very best because they invest in their people and their property. Sinfonia Gulf Coast,

Demetrius Fuller, Music & Artistic Director

WHERE HAPPILY EVER AFTER BEGINS The destination for fairytale weddings BY ZANDRA WOLFGRAM

OUR MEMORIES • I had never really considered getting married at a hotel before. I knew I wanted a wedding with an ocean backdrop, but I didn’t want to be on the sand, which limited our options until our planner took us to tour Hilton Sandestin Beach. At the resort, we were able to have our oceanside wedding on their expansive outdoor deck overlooking the sugar white sands of Miramar Beach. Getting married here was wonderful because all of our guests were in one place the whole weekend. Planning was seamless because of their flexible options, allowing us to substitute and customize our entire experience. The wedding manager Angela was very accommodating and responsive. She went out of her way to make things happen quickly and to ensure we were happy and relaxed.

eddings are fairytales that come to life — the moment when dreams come true for many brides. And a destination beach wedding sets the stage for the most special day of their lives in one of the most beautiful places imaginable, Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. Hilton Sandestin Beach caters to brides and grooms looking for a wedding of the dreamlike variety. With an array of venues, customized catering, exquisite accommodations and activities to suit everyone on your guest list, Hilton Sandestin Beach has everything a couple needs to create an unforgettable

experience, from the rehearsal dinner to the honeymoon getaway.
Whether your dream wedding consists of an intimate affair for 15 of your closest loved ones or a grand evening for over 300 guests, our seasoned team of on-site professionals will help curate an evening specific to you. Jon Lovett, director of events, and his capable team personally oversee each Hilton Sandestin Beach wedding, from the initial concept to the final placement of décor and every dreamy detail in between. Lovett and his team take great pride in educating brides on the vast amenities and services the resort offers.

His team acts as a guide for the couple on the path to the perfect day. “Whether they choose an all-inclusive wedding package or want to customize each detail of their special day, we are ready to make each moment memorable,” Lovett says. Miramar Beach makes for a picturesque storybook backdrop to begin your fairy tale. Imagine exchanging or reaffirming your vows on a sun-kissed beach, a sweeping deck overlooking the Gulf at sunset, or your choice of three gracious ballrooms. These picture-perfect Hilton Sandestin Beach venues are as beautiful as a new bride.

• I knew when we decided on a wedding that I wanted the process to be as painless and easy as possible, and planning with the team at Hilton Sandestin Beach was just that. We got married in May at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. We had already hired a DJ, planned an open bar and had chosen a number of food stations to offer our guests — but none of that was now allowed due to the state’s restrictions for COVID-19 safety. Even though my wedding had to change, Hilton Sandestin Beach made sure I was happy with everything, and that it continued to be as stress-free as possible. Our guest list went from 50 to 10 (per the CDC’s recommendations), and we ended up having an amazing, intimate dinner complete with lobster and a champagne toast. Even though it wasn’t what we originally envisioned, the Hilton Sandestin Beach staff made it beautiful and special. It is a lovely facility with the most beautiful beaches in the world at its doorstep. Alongside the perfect setting, the hotel’s team has all of the resources to ensure that all a bride and groom needs to do is enjoy themselves on the day of their wedding.

• I travel a lot for work and am a Hilton Honors Diamond member, so I knew, when planning the proposal, that I wanted to spend a weekend at Hilton Sandestin Beach. I had done a web search for the best proposal locations in Florida and found the Hilton Sandestin Beach’s “Mastering a Magical Marriage Proposal.” When I contacted the hotel, I was connected with Darrell the lead concierge, who was almost as excited as I was to plan the proposal. Darrell and I spoke three or four times before the actual day I proposed — he made the planning process easy and promised it would be seamless. On the day of the proposal, my fiancé enjoyed a spa day at Serenity by the sea Spa within the hotel while Darrell and I met to set everything up. He had ordered white roses, my financé’s favorite, and even purchased extras that would be in our guest room creating a trail to the bedroom. That night, we would have the private wine room to ourselves at the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant — Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood. Once we ordered appetizers and drinks, the wait staff brought out the ring along with my guitar, so I could perform a song I had written for her. It all happened perfectly and was incredibly special. Darrell even filmed the whole thing for us to have as a memento. Darrell was amazing and was truly integral in making this memorable proposal happen. There are beautiful places to stay on the beach, but none will make your experience as personable as Hilton Sandestin Beach.

OPERATION ONE VOICE

MOON CREEK STUDIOS

OPERATION ONE VOICE

• For the past several years, we have hosted Warrior Weekend at Hilton Sandestin Beach. We take a group of 45–55 military families from the Special Operations Community — including Green Berets, Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Air Force Combat Controllers, firefighters and police from Florida, Georgia and North Carolina — for a four day weekend trip. This is not a conference, but a time for these families to relax and rejuvenate together before going back to life as they know it. Hilton Sandestin Beach helps facilitate this by going above and beyond to accommodate. Many of these men have injuries, are amputees or are battling cancer, and the team at Hilton Sandestin Beach always provides whatever is needed to make their stay comfortable and pleasurable. Each year, they ensure that those in wheelchairs or those who are injured are provided with special chairs so they can go down and enjoy time on the beach. The staff is inclusive and extremely welcoming of each and every person. They are likely this hospitable to every group, but it makes a world of difference to these families. They care and seem to have a genuine understanding of what these families have been through and are still going through. The staff is highly professional, accommodating and always provides a relaxing atmosphere for our group.

HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH Our home by the sea for nearly four decades BY THE BIRDSONG FAMILY

S

helly and Johnny Birdsong of Franklin, Tennessee, have both been traveling to the Hilton Sandestin Beach since its opening in 1984. Now with their three kids, Bo (age 18), Keeling (7) and Calhoun (2), staying here has become a family tradition. Shelly and Johnny both enjoyed staying here before they met and fell in love, and both have discovered that they still have a love affair with the Hilton Sandestin Beach. Here’s what they say makes the Hilton Sandestin Beach so very special to them:

JOHNNY:

Just the thought of Hilton Sandestin Beach brings up 36 years of thoughts and memories of happiness, love and joy. I have been vacationing there since the first year it was opened (1984), and I can’t recall a year when I was not there at least once. I have been with my mother, sister and cousins, then with friends during college, and for years after college with those same friends for golf trips. Now my trips there continue today with my wife and children. It has always been our family’s “happy place.” When I first met my wife, we discovered things we had in common on one of our very first dates. We both had the same favorite local restaurant and favorite beach destination — the Hilton Sandestin Beach. We visit as often as we can, usually more than once 86 HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH 2021

a year. And whether it’s just the two of us or with our children, we find that we don’t ever leave the resort — we have everything we need right there. From the pool, the beach, fabulous dining options and so much more, why would we leave? This is a treasured place. It has become a part of our lives and, without a doubt, will be for many years to come.

SHELLY:

I can still remember vividly the day my family pulled into the Hilton Sandestin Beach. Must have been in 198485, and with three small children in tow, my parents were thrilled when they saw that valet stand and lobby. And for us kids, my brother, sister and I, it was a magical place. Thus, began our love affair with the hotel and the resort. My entire childhood of summers from then on were spent at Sandestin.

Visits to Hilton Sandestin Beach have become a generational touchstone for some families.

Now that I bring my own children to the hotel, the same wonders of an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, ice cream and bunk beds in the room, still apply. “And they still incite.” As far as special places go, yes, it is where I grew up, it is where I have been coming with girlfriends since I was a teenager. When I met my husband and we discovered our mutual love for the hotel and resort, and as we became our own family, our tradition of coming to the Hilton began in full. Every year now for a decade, we have visited multiple times and have countless memories made on each and every trip — from our children’s first steps in the sand, swim-

ming in the pool, running down the long hotel halls, even taking my daughter for her “special dinner” at Seagar’s. We have spent Christmas, Easter, New Year’s, anniversaries, birthdays and almost every other reason to celebrate here. Although we are fortunate in our life to be able to travel and experience many wonderful resorts and areas in our country, we always make sure we spend time at the Hilton Sandestin Beach and enjoy a stay there each and every year — sometimes more than once when we are really lucky. Our family’s memories start and end at this hotel. Thank you, Hilton Sandestin Beach, for nearly four decades of seaside reverie.

OGLETREE FAMILY

T

he Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa is truly a home away from home for my family and me. We have been staying here for more than 30 years; four generations of Ogletrees cannot get enough of this place. I have been to beaches around the world, everywhere from Hawaii to Israel, and I have yet to find a resort that comes close to this property. The combination of the salt in the air along with the beauty of the water and sand is therapeutic in so many ways for me. Back home in Birmingham, Alabama I work full-time as an accountant. I am also a professional pianist and have a successful YouTube career. Needless to say, it’s very difficult for me to fully relax while I’m home. My sanity hinges on getaways, and I most often choose the Hilton Sandestin Beach, staying more than 50 nights per year. About two years ago, I made the decision to exclusively get my haircut at the Serenity by the sea Spa salon.
