“There’s a lot to glean from that first conversation you have with a guest,” concierge Lynn Verble shares. “We take every personality into account. It’s our job to listen and learn what your expectations are. Once we do, it’s easy to plug you in to experiences you’ll enjoy.”

“When you’ve been at this job for a while, it’s second nature to anticipate what questions are coming,” adds Smith.

“It’s always rewarding to see our guest’s stress melt away and know we contributed to their relaxed state of mind.”

For Smith, the biggest question is always, “Where’s good seafood?”

If you’re looking for something fashionable to take home, you may wish to steer your shuttle to Silver Sands Premium Outlets. “We like to update guests with new events happening with recreation that week, or that we now have a 24/7 state-of-the-art fitness facility,” Smith describes. “But then there’s our behind the scenes duty, in which we quickly and quietly coordinate your special requests.”

For concierge Betty Tolbert, it’s the best part of the job. Last year, a father called ahead of his family’s arrival to inform Tolbert that it was his 7-year-old son’s birthday. Though a mere half-hour out, he wondered if it was possible to prepare something special.

“As it happened, Kids Krew was making balloons that day,” laughs Tolbert. “So I managed to get some together, grab some candy, make a card and have the surprise waiting for him in the room. He was so surprised that we knew it was his birthday! It’s the little things like that keep each day fresh and exciting.”

As of now, you can even message your concierge through Kipsu, a userfriendly texting service that grants guests expedited answers to questions and addresses any request — no matter how big or small.

“For me, this isn’t work,” says Tolbert.

“I love to entertain people in my home, so I think of you like a friend who’s come to visit. I’m the friend you run to when you have a problem, because you know I’ll take care of you.”

It’s that level of passion and hospitality that keep those friends returning, year after year.

“There’s a couple for whom, years ago, I helped arrange a surprise engagement on the beach,” Smith recalls. “Then, they had their wedding here. Two years later, they spent their anniversary with us, and, just last year, returned with their first child.

You feel like a part of the family, and that’s something that makes the resort as much of a home for me as it is for you.”

I was happy I was able to share in that memory with them.”

Which is why I enjoy being able to meet our conference clients at pre- and postconvention meetings.

This is a fairly new aspect of my job and, honestly, my most favorite addition. We always start off by going around the room to introduce ourselves.

The first time, I was terrified. What am I going to say? ‘Hi, I’m Savannah Juneau. You will be giving me your money?’ No, that wasn’t right. But, by the time I was done with that thought, it was my turn. I stood with a big smile on my face and said ‘Hello everyone, it is wonderful to have you all with us. My name is Savannah Juneau, and I will be sending you the final invoice.’ Not the best tag line, but that’s what came out. And then, it happened. I GOT A LAUGH! This was certainly unexpected but very much welcome.

The rest is history. That phrase works every time! It is definitely a great feeling when you can break the ice in an otherwise formal setting.”

“Last spring, I assisted the Johnsons with a two-night stay. She was terminally ill and wanted to see the beach and smell the ocean one last time. Mrs. Johnson arrived with her sister-in-law, Trish. We went over the details to make sure they had breakfast, a sand wheelchair and a room that was going to be comfortable with a great view. I was able to greet them, check them in early and have the bellman ensure they got to their room and had access to the beach wheelchair. Two months later, Trish called me to let me know Mrs. Johnson had passed. She also thanked me for getting them a nice room with such a great view. She made sure to also send thanks to all of the employees who helped make her sister-in-law’s last trip so special.”

PAUL SCHOENEBERG Seagar’s “One of my best memories at Seagar’s was a wedding proposal in one of our private wine rooms. The gentleman had it all planned out from beginning to end. Seagar’s has become the perfect location for special occasions thanks in large part to our private dining spaces and our intimate ambiance. On this occasion, the private wine room was already booked, however this gentleman went through with planning the evening. He preordered all of her favorite dishes, including Alaskan king crab, fried lobster beignets, chocolate soufflé and bananas foster for the table. His two young daughters joined them for dinner so it was a future family affair. … His master plan was to bring out the ring for dessert in lieu of the chocolate soufflé, and I thought he was going to get down on one knee to pop the question in traditional format. Instead, his two daughters got on each side of her and got on one knee each with a bouquet of roses and asked, ‘Will you marry our daddy?’ How can you say no to that? It was the best proposal I have been a part of here at Seagar’s, and every time I witness a proposal here, I reflect back on that one.”

“When thinking about what duties encompass the job description of a bellman, there are a myriad of opportunities to serve our guests.

One instance that stands out for me happened a few years ago. I was working early in the morning and received a call from a guest who had a flat tire. She was on vacation with her mother and infant daughter while her husband was deployed. I understood that she was not in a position to change the tire herself and offered to assist her with it. After changing the tire, she was very gracious and was very happy to be able to continue her vacation.

Unfortunately, when she tried to start the vehicle, she realized her battery was low and wouldn’t start the vehicle. I was able to jump start her vehicle and let her know, if she wanted to pick up a battery while she was out, I’d be happy to help her install it. She returned with a battery, I installed it for her and she was overjoyed.”

HARD AT PLAY Kids Krew Isn’t Recess, It’s A Weeklong Bash At The Beach

t Hilton Sandestin Beach, fun is a family affair.

Mom may be content with a day of pampering at Serenity by the sea Spa, while dad gets his kicks on the golf green. As for children ages 5 to 12?

They’re given the run of the resort with Kids Krew, a seasonal in-house program offering action-packed adventure and boundless entertainment.

“All of our Kids Krew programs consist of structured, four-hour sessions,” says Alexis Bass, Recreation Manager at Hilton Sandestin Beach. “We have Kids Krew in the morning four days a week, from 9:30 to 1:30 in the afternoon, but, seven days a week, we have Kids Night Out.” While parents spend a romantic evening at Seagar’s, children are likely out on the beach hunting for crabs, catching a “dive-in” movie by the pool or dressing up as pirates and searching for treasure.

“A lot of planning goes into creating our theme of the day,” says Bass. “Last year, we established days around Moana, Trolls and Minions, so for 2019, we’ll feature whatever is popular with the kids.”

While daily programming may include Superhero Saturdays and Jurassic Park parties (complete with dino masks and

They had to cancel their Kids Krew reservations several times during their last stay, and our team members wanted to let them know they were missed by all. Our Kids Krew staff delivered two T-shirts, balloons and a note to their room letting them know that we were thinking about them. Moments like this are little reminders that being a team member at Hilton Sandestin Beach is more than just a job; it’s an opportunity to provide joy and lifelong memories to each for our guests.”

Last summer, a returning company celebrated with an “Around the World” theme. Professional characters, as well as Kids Krew staff, dressed up as iconic, international characters to surprise the little ones.

Mary Poppins flew in from London via umbrella, while Aladdin and Jasmine rode their magic carpet from India. While children watched movies with their favorite characters, parents played team-building games and enjoyed libations.

But fun for all isn’t limited to private parties, and children and adults don’t have to separate for a little diversion. If the Kids Krew team has learned anything from last year’s family pool parties, which incorporated tie-dying, limbo contests and a Build-a-Bear type toy creation station, it’s that the best memories are made when all are involved.

This year, families can look forward to Fourth of July and a free fair.

As Kids Krew’s biggest bash of the year, this extravaganza boasts kickball tournaments on the beach, stilt-walkers, a myriad of traditional carnival games and, of course, plenty of prizes.

Then, as families indulge in a delectable, al fresco feast, the Kids Krew team distributes glow sticks for an electrifying pool party. Iridescent red, white and blue sticks light up the night before a booming firework finale.

“When we see kids that don’t want to leave when their parents come to pick them up, we know we’re doing a good job, and those kids are either going to come back the next day or the next year,” says Bass. “I always meet parents who went to Kids Krew when they were little, and now they’re bringing their own children. It becomes a family tradition, and it’s awesome to know we’re a part of that.”

Black diamond-rated Prime Steaks are the star, but with the bounty of the Gulf of Mexico right outside the resort’s door, seafood takes its rightful place on the menu. Menus are designed to take advantage of fresh, seasonal ingredients, and every aspect of a Seagar’s meal is given attention to detail that many restaurants might consider too time- and labor-intensive.

Leading the Seagar’s team is new Executive Chef Lee Guidry, who boasts more than 11 years of experience in the culinary industry. A graduate of Delgado Culinary Institute in New Orleans, Chef Guidry also honed his culinary skills in Nashville, Chicago and the Florida Panhandle and brings those flavors to Seagar’s.

Chef Guidry is working with local microgreens and oysters from around the country to add new and different flavor profiles to the Seagar’s menu.

“Microgreens are a local product that are great for garnish but also have a wonderfully intense flavor profile,” he said. “I chose to bring in live oysters from the Northeast and West Coast due to the pristine, cold waters that they are raised in. The cold water allows the consumer to truly taste the oyster and the salinity of the water they are cultivated in. I also chose to use the selections from both coasts to educate both the consumer as well as our staff.”

The gentleman ordered the soft-shell appetizer to begin his evening and then chose the soft-shell crab as his entrée as well. He and his wife returned the following night and ordered the same dishes for a second time. Upon their arrival for the third evening in a row, I greeted them at their table and begged the gentleman to allow me the opportunity to cook him something other than crab. We love when our guests enjoy a dish so much that they return just to indulge in it one more time. It made my evening knowing our team was creating dishes that this gentleman loved so much he ordered it three times.”

Familiar, because they want to recreate that warm feeling of family, fun and relaxation year after year — and unexpected, because guests don’t always want to see and do the “same old, same old” again and again.

At the resort, the breakfast buffet at Sandcastles Restaurant is one of those cherished rituals. The restaurant is buzzing, the counters are filled with an extravaganza of breakfast choices and youngsters can watch as their waffles are being made — and topped with anything they want.

Lunch is usually a quieter affair and features a variety of tasty sandwiches — such as the crab melt with local pork belly or the new Cuban sandwich featuring chunks of fresh roasted pork shoulder.

For dinner, the focus remains on the area’s outstanding seafood as Sandcastles embraces its Florida Seafood House theme, highlighting the freshest flavors the Gulf and the Atlantic have to offer.

“This region has the best seafood, why not celebrate it,” resort Executive Chef Dan Vargo says.

Visitors raved about the offerings, including the Gulf Coast flatbread (with Gulf shrimp and a tomato and bacon jam) or the crispy green tomatoes with pimento cheese and pickled red onions.

Then there is Sandcastles’ Raw Bar, which features Gulf and Atlantic oysters, all of which can be prepared to your liking to better appeal to both families and diets.

“We now have a restaurant that highlights the seafood many guests travel to the Gulf Coast looking for,” Chef Vargo says. “And not only is there a variety of fish and shellfish available on the menu, but we also can cater to health-conscious diners with a variety of preparations, not just fried.”

Chef Vargo said they will continue to grow the new focus on seafood, teasing new additions to the menu like duo appetizer plates with Gulf shrimp, oysters or Louisiana seafood gumbo. For dinner, expect a wider variety of seafood entrées, such as bacon-wrapped swordfish or a Gulf Coast take on fish and chips that features grouper, thick-cut fries and a malt vinegar aioli.

“With the Florida fish house-style menu, I think we’ll have a larger, broader appeal, especially for families visiting from near and far,” says Vargo.

What made me most happy about this encounter was after the bill was paid and the couple went to exit, the gentleman extended his hand to shake mine. He told me that ‘this in fact was the best service they had ever received, the best conversation they had ever had with a waiter and that I had put a bright spot on their vacation.’ The couple continued to dine in Sandcastles at my table throughout the rest of their stay. When they get back to their room, they turn the AC down, everybody showers, walks out on the veranda to look at the water and begins to relax,” says Angelina Covington, resort director of operations.

In 2015, eco tourists and locals alike went crazy for the new artificial reef that debuted in Grayton Beach. This man-made structure was coined Turtle Reef, as it is shaped like a sea turtle when viewed from above.

As of late last summer, three other reefs taking the forms of a dolphin, a sea horse and a cobia had made their homes in the waters off Scenic Highway 30A. Like natural reefs, these habitats attracted the attention of sundry marine creatures that now live and flourish in the newfound shelters. At one end of the property is Tucker Bayou, where anglers can spend the day casting from the docks.

UNDERWATER MUSEUM OF ART

Bringing together two of Florida’s most beloved attractions — the arts and the Gulf of Mexico — the UMA is the first underwater permanent sculpture exhibit in the U.S. The UMA is the first presentation of the Cultural Arts Alliance’s Art In Public Spaces Program and supports South Walton Artificial Reef Association’s mission of creating marine habitats and expanding fishery populations. The UMA is located in approximately 60 feet of water and at a distance of .7 miles from shore. Visitors traveling by car can access the museum via Grayton Beach State Park. Morrison Springs Park in Ponce de Leon encompasses 161 acres of preserved woodland. Trekking along in the shade of cypress and oak trees, you wind up at one of the area’s most striking natural springs. Submerged in the crystal-blue waters of the spring, which is about 250 feet in diameter, are several underwater cave systems, cementing its status as one of Florida’s finest dive sites. If your family doesn’t want to take that deep plunge, shallower depths serve ideally for swimming and kayaking. THE SWEET SPOT For many, Hilton Sandestin Beach is a generational experience to be shared through the years

THE GORDON FAMILY

When my husband, Wes, and I met during our freshman year spring break at the Hilton Sandestin Beach, I’m pretty sure we never imagined we would end up vacationing there so many years later with our four children. Life is fun and funny that way.

As 19-year-old freshmen at Mississippi State University, we both ended up spending a week soaking up the Florida sun with mutual friends who introduced us to the Hilton Sandestin Beach, located hours away from our Starkville, Mississippi, campus. We’ve been together ever since, through undergraduate and graduate school, marriage in 2005, our first jobs, multiple moves and the addition of our four kids born on three continents — all with trips to the Hilton Sandestin Beach woven into our story. It makes my heart swell every time we pull into the resort to make fantastic memories with the ones we love most. It’s where it all began!

We love this resort because of its beauty, fun and convenience. Our kids have grown to that perfect age — being able to spend all day at the beach and then enjoy nights zip lining and admiring fireworks at Baytowne Wharf. They are still small enough to build sandcastles but big enough to help carry the beach toys. We know the years are flying, so we want to make the most of our family time together. The Hilton Sandestin Beach is the perfect place to do that.

For the past several years, we have ended our stay with a poolside ice cream supper on our last night. It’s a tradition we all anticipate as we stay as long as possible playing in the waves and then the pool to finish up our fantastic week at the beach.

My children, Mary Reeves, (10), Murphy, (8), Max, (6), and

Mamie, (4) love choosing their favorite flavors at Picnix. We enjoy our fun meal and then get back to the water until the colorful pool lights glow. It always makes saying, “See you next time!” a little easier because we have squeezed every minute of fun out of our vacation.

Family traditions such as this one bind us together. Ice cream cones drip down sticky little fingers as the sun sets over the ocean. I will hold these snapshots in my mind as my children turn into college students who go to the beach with their friends instead of their parents. This resort helps us make sweet memories in ways we never could have imagined all those years ago.

THE WHITACRE FAMILY

Our first year at the Hilton Sandestin Beach was, by no stretch of the imagination, magical. So much so that we chose to come back for a second year in a row, and this time to celebrate our son’s second birthday on the beach and kick off the summer at our new favorite place, Hilton Sandestin Beach. Everything here is so family-focused: the bunk beds in the suites, ice cream from Picnix, the indoor and outdoor pools, direct beach access with umbrella and chair service, family-friendly dining and even popcorn in the lobby (and of course, the delicious fish tacos and drinks at Barefoot’s are something my husband and I crave all the way from Texas once the weather starts turning warmer!). It makes our lives easy as parents, and our children love to feel special at, what they have dubbed, “our beach” and “our hotel.” Our boys still talk about our stay and request to return to “our favorite place” at least once a week as they pass the framed pictures in the hallways of our home. Sandestin and this hotel hold many special family memories for us, and it’s a summer tradition we hope we can continue throughout our boys’ lives. My husband actually stayed here as a child, too, and we love seeing it come full-circle.

THE MATHENY FAMILY

When it comes to finding a place to stay during our vacations, I look for hotels that are family oriented and also provide great amenities. Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa definitely stood out among the rest with its many pools and close proximity to shopping and dining. The hotel location is right on the beach, which makes it so convenient for my family in case we may need something from our room.

The staff is wonderful and always attempted to interact with us. Exceptional service was given throughout our stay, which is a big plus. I would definitely recommend Hilton Sandestin Beach resort for your next getaway. Thank you for giving my family the most unforgettable moments!

T

here are few places that are able to perfectly embody impeccable service, delicious food, a friendly, welltrained staff and an array of amenities — all in the perfect location.

The Hilton Sandestin Beach has them all though. My family has been enjoying this place for 30 years, and we have such great memories together. My children and grandchildren have grown up coming here every summer, and we’ve even begun spending a considerable amount of time here during the offseason as well.

The beauty of the beach and Gulf first drew my family and I here, but the second-to-none experience as a guest is what keeps bringing us back. Year after year, the same staff helps bring our bags to our room. The same staff serves us at Sandcastles, Barefoot’s, Seagar’s and Serenity as well, which is a testimony to the positive work environment, for which management is responsible.

My youngest son, Jon Michael, especially enjoys this place. Born with dwarfism, he has limited mobility and other various physical challenges. The hotel staff is always overwhelmingly accommodating to meet and exceed every one of his needs. In turn, he stays there a lot. He will take friends down for several weeks out of the year.

We have countless memories of vacation here. The rooms used to have one stove eye, and my wife would occasionally cook us dinner in the room. My kids grew up playing in the arcade and watching movies in the movie

theater. We’re huge college football fans, and our family’s allegiance is split between Alabama and Auburn. It’s a family tradition to watch them play each other in the Iron Bowl in the hotel lobby each year.

We will see the same families year after year as well.

There isn’t just one thing that keeps us coming back, and it’s difficult to list all of the things that create such a relaxing environment to vacation. Nostalgia certainly plays some part, but this hotel continually improves year after year, inundating the guests with first-class amenities the moment they check in.

The Ogletrees will always cherish the moments we’ve spent together here, and this will continue to be our favorite places to vacation for many years down the road.
