I won’t deny that having some terrific people leave was hard. They did a great job, and I miss them. Change is always hard, however change can also be exciting. Every new person we hired was our first-choice candidate, and each came to Rowland Hall energized about the opportunities here. They love our culture and the sense of community.
Many of them have said they have not experienced this same level of camaraderie and team spirit at any former workplace. They also came with new ideas and energy and asked probing questions. They challenged some of my
Thank you for an amazing year. Here’s to making 2015-2016 as exciting and stimulating for your children and our entire community.
assumptions. Sometimes when you are immersed in a school like Rowland Hall, which is complex and operates so well, it can be difficult to see the forest for the trees. Well, they see the forest, and we are already a better school because of their input.
Teachers are participating in collaborative curriculum development at a level we have never achieved previously. We have an outstanding faculty, and they can teach each other a great deal. We had more faculty and administrators visiting each other’s classes this year than in the last three years combined. These visits stimulated productive educational conversations that resulted in differentiated instructional ideas being shared and renewed growth on the part of all involved. This summer, more of our teachers participated in professional development than ever before. We had outside experts come to Rowland Hall to talk about effective teacher collaboration and Dear Families, Alumni, Grandparents, and Friends, Last year was one of the best years of my tenure at Rowland Hall. What is interesting is that many people indicated to me that they thought it was going to be a hard year because many senior faculty and staff have retired over the past few years. They predicted that the new people would need extra time and training to learn our school culture.

improving math instruction. We hosted a Critical Friends consultant on campus. Teams worked on developing curriculum for all four divisions, and the teachers in attendance will now share this innovative approach to collaboration with their colleagues. Our teachers also attended a conference in St. Louis, The Summit for Transformative Learning, where Director of Curriculum and Instruction Wendell Thomas, a new addition to the team this past year, was one of the speakers.Themajority of this professional development activity happened thanks to the generosity of donors who contributed the needed $60,000 dollars through individual gifts and participation in the auction to help the faculty and staff be better educators.
It is an exciting time to be at Rowland Hall. While retaining the qualities that make this school special, we are examining new ideas, incorporating the latest research, and doing it in a thoughtful and measured manner. We are not just jumping on the latest fads. We are still requiring students to learn material that will enable them to be knowledgeable about the subjects they are studying while, at the same time, helping them think critically and use information effectively. Most importantly, we are finding ways to be the best educators we can be for each individual student.
AlanSincerely,Sparrow Head of School
The timing and synergy when several extraordinarily talented new people join an extremely skilled group of teachers and staff has benefitted our conversations about the Strategic Plan and pushed us to take advantage of all the latest research to inform our educational approach. The key is that both our veteran teachers and our new arrivals are all open to learning from each other. We are, of course, maintaining all that Rowland Hall does so well while at the same time having a keen eye to areas we can improve. We have added some interesting new science classes in the Upper School — medical physiology and aviation science, just to name a couple — while our Lower School science instruction has become even stronger. Most schools don’t even have a science specialist at the elementary level, and ours is exploring fresh ideas while keeping our curriculum in line with the best of the Next Generation Science Standards.

ACHiEVEmENTs OF THE CLAss OF 2015
Two seniors helped lead our jazz band to a first-place finish in the Peaks Jazz Festival this February. Many of our dancers performed with local companies, ranging from Virginia Tanner Dance to Ballet West, and the Utah Dance Education Organization honored one of our dancers for her original choreography.Duringtheir high school years, these students earned national accolades for their contributions to the Upper School literary magazine, Tesserae. Last September, the magazine won a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for the second consecutive year. One of our graduates also took first place in Utah’s Junior Creative Poetry Contest.
ANNUAL REPORT 5
Graduates of the Class of 2015 have matriculated to 43 different colleges and universities across the United States and abroad. The 136 colleges and universities to which they were admitted offered merit scholarships to 73 percent of the class. Twenty-two members of the class have attended Rowland Hall for 12 years or more. We call them “lifers.”This class includes one of the 141 recipients of the highly prestigious 2015 U.S. Presidential Scholarship. It also includes a student who earned “perfect” scores on the SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, and all AP exams taken. Our seniors excelled as debaters, earning distinctions from the National Forensic League and qualifying for multiple national championship tournaments. They led an unprecedented two teams to the 2015 Tournament of Champions Sweet 16, and two students went undefeated to win the first-ever Utah Tournament of Excellence. In athletics, the Class of 2015 competed at a high level throughout their Upper School careers. They won seven state titles and 25 region titles. They also placed in the top five in The Deseret News 2A All-Sports awards for each of their four years. Nine All-Region athletes and eight All-State athletes, a State Female Swimmer of the Year, and a Senior All-Star are members of the Class of 2015. Additionally, nine students were recognized as Academic All-Region or Academic All-State athletes. One of our seniors won the North American Big Mountain Freestyle Championship three years in a row; another broke the 2A state record for the 800m race as a junior and then again as a senior. Others starred in soccer-themed commercials and films, served as an assistant coach to our Middle School athletes, and represented Rowland Hall at the UHSAA Dare to Lead Conference.
This senior class also includes many talented artists who entertained us with drama, dance, and musical performances. They formed vocal groups and recorded CDs. One sang the national anthem at a University of Utah volleyball game, and one is a four-year member of the Utah Youth Symphony.
Our seniors shared their artistic talents with the community, playing cello in the lobby of Primary Children’s Hospital and teaching classes at Bad Dog Arts. One member of the class produced and promoted an art installation to raise awareness for reducing the use of plastic. They volunteered countless hours at local organizations, taking care of shelter animals, fixing bicycles, and working for the Special Olympics. The seniors extended their reach to a camp for homeless youth in Los Angeles and to rural clinics in El Salvador, and they taught children throughout Utah how to read, play piano, and ski freestyle. This group of students worked to organize blood drives, classify cancer cells, and save the environment. Their efforts truly were boundless. This class also completed internships, contributing to the fields of science, media, and graphic design. They worked on DNA sequencing and studied the molecular structure of proteins at the University of Utah. One shadowed a corporate attorney at eBay, and another worked on multimedia projects at MRM McCann. They were part-time employees at businesses such as Nordstrom and rock climbing gyms. One member of the class, with two alumni partners, started a company that designs, builds, and sells custom skis.
Our seniors somehow found the time to pursue other interests, whether training and showing horses, sewing their own clothes, or becoming certified in Indian Ashtanga Yoga. One breeds poison dart frogs. Another is a show supervisor for MakeMind Entertainment. Yet another is a certified scuba diver with a substantial portfolio of underwater photography.Theytraveled widely, representing Rowland Hall at diversity conferences in Oregon and participating in Mandarin Chinese immersion programs in Vermont. They excelled locally, with one student competing with undergraduates throughout the nation to win the Research Association Presentation Award from the University of Utah. This class is diverse, talented, and hard working. Though this article cannot possibly encompass all their achievements and experiences, we hope it gives you a sense of why the faculty and staff are so proud of the Class of 2015.
For many parents, the school’s commitment to excellence combined with a focus on ethical character development is enough to ensure that they will stay part of our community until each of their children graduates. I know my two kids felt nurtured in a safe, encouraging environment that allowed them to develop the many different facets of their personalities. It did not surprise me to learn that in the INDEX survey of our graduating seniors, the personal connection they had with their teachers sets the curve for that measure among our national peers: we are at the top of the scale.
One of the more remarkable statistics associated with this gifted class is that 40 percent of the graduates attended Rowland Hall for a decade or longer. The parents of this group, many of whom I know very well, will mention the serious financial commitment such loyalty represents. More importantly, they will speak to the incredible value Rowland Hall offers. They have kept their children at this fine institution for so long because they feel they are getting an excellent return on their investment.
Our average class sizes (14 students per section in the Upper School, for example) are among the lowest in the state, ensuring students get individual attention. Such figures are one reason our recent parent survey indicated that the school met or exceeded expectations for 95 percent of respondents, a remarkable figure.
The dedication our teachers have to their craft and supporting our children is unrivaled. I experienced that firsthand in June when I spent a week with a dozen Rowland Hall faculty members in a critical thinking workshop. While school was out of session for the year, and most children and their families were on vacation, these gifted faculty from all four divisions of the school were perfecting their craft. In this powerful seminar they drew on each other’s talents guided by an outside expert whose visit was supported by professional development funds from our successful auction. Even though our teachers were not compensated for this training, they were passionate about discovering new ways of experimenting in the classroom to improve the learning environment for ourThatchildren.isthe sort of return on investment that is hard to find anywhere.
6 2014 - 2015
While these accolades represent how national organizations perceive Rowland Hall’s excellence, we can also unearth value through quantitative measures. The school is run incredibly efficiently and is focused on what matters—establishing an outstanding teaching and learning environment. In our national peer group, our teacher pay is right in the middle of the pack even though 75 percent of those peers charge a higher tuition. Our plant expense as a total percentage of our operating budget is the lowest of our peer group, while our instructional expense is near the top.
Richard Badenhausen Board of Trustees Chair
FROm THE CHAiR OF THE BOARd OF TRUsTEEs playing on a national stage is important. We are the only INDEX school in Utah, one of 50 from around the country that includes places such as Sidwell Friends, Princeton Day, and the Blake School. We are the only Malone Scholars School in Utah; only 50 U.S. schools are selected on the basis of academic caliber, quality of teaching, a strong AP program, and a commitment to diversity. Additionally, we have numerous individual programs—like debate and Rowmark, to name two—that appear near the top of national rankings.
On May 30, I had the pleasure of addressing Rowland Hall’s 2015 graduating class at the school’s commencement ceremony. The event was a wonderful celebration of student accomplishment, though I reminded the graduates that many members of our community played a role in their success: friends and siblings, parents and grandparents, staff, coaches, and teachers have supported them in many different ways.
Of course, we all understand value differently. For some, the fact that Rowland Hall is the one Utah school

Dear School Friends, During the year, our focus was on maintaining a sound financial position, strengthening our controls and processes, and maintaining a close eye on making sure tuition dollars are used wisely and effectively to meet the goals of the Strategic Plan. The year was solid and filled with many events, but I want to focus on two.
First, we are excited Gwen Fonarow is joining us as the new CFO, effective May 2015. She brings a depth of experience and fresh perspective to help us concentrate on truly making the business office an integral partner of the school.

Second, we remain focused on delivering to the Strategic Plan. Our business model will continue to emphasize funding a top-quality college preparatory education while maintaining the financial strength of the institution. While current operations are paramount, we also remain dedicated to our longerterm task of creating 21st-century facilities and enhancing our financial strength and flexibility through endowment growth. Our success depends on continued strong enrollment. To that end, we will more clearly and aggressively define and communicate the value of a Rowland Hall education to our students, parents, alumni, and the community at large. The finance committee of your Board of Trustees will keep this mission statement front and center as we do our part to help this wonderful institution continue to prosper. Saba Siddiqui Finance Committee Chair We are pleased to welcome Gwen Fonarow to the position of chief financial officer. Gwen has extensive experience in financial management in both the public and private sector, and has held a number of senior leadership positions throughout her career. She comes to us from the CFO post at Creminelli Fine Meats. Prior to that, she held the CFO position at Valley Behavioral Health, and she worked for eight years as senior director of finance for Method Products in San Francisco. Gwen is a strategic thinker with a keen eye for evaluating operations as well as a passion for human resources. Former colleagues have called her a wizard with financial data and say she brings out the best in people. Gwen moved to Salt Lake City three years ago with her husband, Tyler, who is our Middle School principal. She and Tyler have two daughters at Rowland Hall, Tessa in third grade and Josie in first grade.

Dave Samson, Upper School Assistant Principal
Jij impressed those he met at Rowland Hall with his depth of knowledge, ability to connect with others, and intelligence, humility, and vision. Jij said he “fell in love” with the school on his first visit. He continued, “Knowing that I would be looking for a leadership position at the beginning of this school year, I approached the process not as a job search, but as a community search. In Rowland Hall, I found the perfect community for me, a school characterized by support, kindness, and a dedication to continuous and joyful learning.”
The committee reviewed over 40 résumés, interviewed seven semifinalists by phone, and hosted four finalists on campus. Those who met with Dave describe him as open, easy-going, experienced, a good listener with a great sense of humor, thoughtful, and compassionate. His current head of school gave him a sparkling recommendation, describing Dave as “a key member of the leadership team” at Germantown Academy.
ANNUAL REPORT 13
Jij (pronounced “Jay”) comes to Rowland Hall from Town School for Boys in San Francisco, where he held a number of leadership positions, most notably as director of the Exploration of New Ideas program (STEM and innovation) and fourth grade teacher. He also oversaw a faculty evaluation research and revision project, serving as a teacher-leader on the committee on teaching and learning, and as the leader of the school’s Green Team. Jij began his career in experiential education by leading wilderness trips. He has a B.A. from Northwestern University in environmental science and an M.Ed. in private school leadership from the University of Hawaii.
Dave comes to us after 11 years at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, where he served as the house head director (a position equivalent to the assistant principal of the Upper School) and as the school counselor. He holds a B.A. from Connecticut College and an M.A. in counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
We look forward to welcoming Dave and his wife Kate. At press time we learned that Kate is the new Middle School Emotional Support Counselor replacing Amanda Wissler (See page 19). They have a 16-month-old daughter, Beatrice.

Coral Azarian Chaleh Thirkill
Coral comes to Rowland Hall with expertise in advising and counseling in the areas of college admissions, student leadership, and the transition to college. In 2011, Coral served as the Rowland Hall development associate for one year while she prepared for graduate school. In her cover letter she shared her thoughts about her time at Rowland Hall: “I knew that I had found a wonderful school that was not only characterized by the intelligent and caring students who attended, but also by the faculty and staff whose true focus was on the holistic development of each and every child.”
According to Richard Badenhausen, chair of Rowland Hall’s Board of Trustees and director of the Honors Program at Westminster College, Coral is “a great fit for our community because she has experienced success at previous institutions that value academic excellence in an environment of support and encouragement. She approached her job with passion and commitment, ensuring that each child received a well-rounded education, focusing not just on their academic experience but social and developmental progress as well. Deborah made all of us— students, parents, faculty, and staff—feel part of an exceptional community.
“In my 13 years as a classroom teacher and 28 years as an administrator I have learned a great deal from the many children and colleagues I have encountered along the way,” Deborah wrote in her retirement letter. “I have loved being part of this community and have been very fortunate to work with highly committed and passionate colleagues.”

After 20 years as our business manager and CFO, Kevin Hanson left Rowland Hall to embark on a new journey, accepting the position of CFO at the Children’s School in Atlanta, Georgia. He accomplished a great deal during his tenure at Rowland Hall, significantly improving the school’s financial position and overseeing the budgeting process that took the school from an average faculty salary of 80 percent to 100 percent of the Salt Lake City pay scale. Kevin was responsible in large part for securing the $20 million bond that enabled us to complete the McCarthey Campus, early and under budget. Most recently, he handled the financial oversight of the building of the new soccer fields. Everyone will miss Kevin’s stable and calm demeanor, and his solid work ethic. His friendship, wit, and improbable sense of humor are irreplaceable. We wish him the very best in Atlanta.
Nurse Shirley Stevens retired last spring after serving as our school nurse for 21 years. Shirley gave daily, compassionate care to students, teachers, staff, and parents. She also oversaw our emergency preparation plans, was a strong advocate for school nursing, and served as president in the Utah School Nurse’s Association. Shirley dedicated her personal time advocating for best school nursing practices at the Utah Legislature. Nurse Shirley touched the lives of students, families, and colleagues in many positive ways. It is with gratitude and appreciation we thank her for all she’s done for the Rowland Hall community.

As many of you know, after 17 years at Rowland Hall as director of college counseling, Bruce Hunter departed to assume the role of interim director of college counseling at Ransom Everglades School in Florida.Rowland Hall is deeply appreciative of Bruce’s significant professional and personal contributions. He passionately and artfully helped students navigate the challenges of finding the next “landing place” in their educational journeys. The world of college counseling has changed dramatically over the past two decades as competition has increased, and the pressures on high school seniors have mounted in the face of ever more daunting odds. Through it all, Bruce lived our shared mission to seek the best match for our seniors—a college at which they will feel challenged and affirmed. We wish him all the best in his new endeavors.

Marilyn Osborne retired in May 2015 after teaching at Rowland Hall for 26 of the 33 years she has been an educator. She taught kindergarten, first, and fourth grades on the Avenues Campus, and second and fourth grades on the McCarthey Campus. In addition, Marilyn served on numerous school committees and mentored many new teachers. A master teacher who possessed a keen insight for the ways children learn, both life lessons and academics, Marilyn’s desire to be an advocate for children drove her teaching and her relationships with them. Marilyn always brought enthusiasm, humor, expertise, wisdom, and passion to her teaching and her work with colleagues. We thank Marilyn for all she has done for Rowland Hall and for the many students, families, and colleagues whose lives she has touched. Marilyn will be greatly missed.
Amy Homer came to work for Rowland Hall as the director of transportation and assistant to Director of Operations Ann Burnett eight years ago. We will miss Amy’s efficient organizational skills and strength in dealing with the many transportation-related issues.
Josh Leger will move within the operations department to become the new director of transportation as well as Director of Operations Ann Burnett’s administrative assistant. Josh has worked extensively within the department on both campuses over the past eight years. Last year he was trained as a driver, obtaining his commercial drivers license, and he finished the year off helping out on one of the routes. He has done a bit of everything very successfully within the department and we are very excited that he accepted the challenge of putting on yet another hat.
Middle School Counselor Amanda Wissler has decided to return to her roots in the clinical setting and began working for the University of Utah this summer. Amanda joined Rowland Hall 12 years ago and was an anchor in the Rowland Hall Middle School community for students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators. She spent much of her professional career with us, ensuring that our students navigate their middle school years with perspective for themselves and empathy for others on their way to being socially and emotionally prepared for high school. During her time at Rowland Hall, Amanda advocated for and developed a robust health curriculum as well as a meaningful advisory program (within a variety of schedule iterations—no small feat!); established a parent education series that helped families partner at home regarding issues such as social media, drugs and alcohol, and bullying; and most recently, Amanda guided our student council in their leadership of this year’s Say Less 2B More campaign. On top of all that are the positive differences Amanda made for our individual students. Her work with students, whether simple check-ins or major moments of crisis management, will not soon be forgotten by these students or our school.

Aaron RebeccaHintonGibson
Rebecca Gibson, the Beginning School administrative assistant, left this June to pursue a graduate degree. Rebecca was a dedicated assistant with a warm, caring, and positive energy. She participated fully in the life of the Beginning School and generously volunteered to support the auction, the Dinner and Dialogue events, and Home and School teacher appreciation dinners.
Lisa Williams has been a devoted and much-loved Beginning School teacher since 2002. Lisa captured the hearts of children and parents while working first as an assistant teacher and then as the co-lead teacher of our Enrichment Program. She supported students, parents, and colleagues with her genuine caring and nurturing spirit. We will miss her contagious smile and great sense of humor. Lisa plans to continue as a substitute teacher with us, so this is not a last goodbye, but more of a “see you around.”
We bid farewell to Steve Mond, Upper School math teacher. After six years, he decided to pursue new adventures. While at Rowland Hall, Steve taught a variety of courses, including the ninth and tenth grade honors courses, and personal finance.

Aaron also dedicated his time and energy to develop the programming for the eighth grade Washington, D.C., trip. He integrated the experience into his American studies curriculum and helped coordinate the culminating photo exhibit at the 15th Street Gallery. Aaron coached the Upper School boys’ basketball team for eight years, and he led the program as head coach for the last three. We wish Aaron the very best as he embarks on a new career.
Steve developed the first Rowland Hall AP Economics class two years ago. We will all fondly remember his incredible Quiz Bowl tournament for the Upper School Battle of the Classes, another activity he introduced to the school, as well as his star turn as the Grinch this past holiday season.
Steve Mond
Aaron Hinton departed Rowland Hall to attend law school. When he came to Rowland Hall eight years ago, Aaron immediately became a valuable part of the eighth grade team. He coordinated and integrated a meaningful service-learning component to his curriculum with Defeat the Street for Homeless Youth in conjunction with the Utah Youth Resource Center. Students spent time researching this relevant social issue, volunteered with the center, created advocacy initiatives, and spent a night on the back lawn to gain an appreciation for sleeping outdoors in the urban environment.

Abby Bacon Congratulations to Lower School Spanish teacher Abby Bacon on receiving the Pat Buckner Award from the Utah Foreign Language Association last April. As the honoree, Señora Abby received a $1,000 award to help defray the expenses of traveling to Spain to further her expertise in the language and culture she teaches to Rowland Hall students.
BELATEd CONGRATs TO sPANisH TEACHER ABBY BACON
In her proposal for the award, Abby wrote: “I am a Spanish teacher at Rowland Hall Lower School, where I teach a FLES (foreign language in the elementary schools) curriculum. The program that we offer in the Lower School provides a meaningful and valuable entry point into the journey of language learning for elementary students. Our program is standards-based and proficiency oriented. Because my students see me twice weekly for 45 minutes each session, it is all the more important to their class experience that I incorporate authentic materials (realia) and create opportunities for them to practice their skills with speakers outside of my classroom’s walls.
Estamos muy orgullosos de ti, Señora Abby!
We look forward to hearing more from Abby about her experience in Spain and future collaborative efforts.
“While in Madrid, I will not only experience the culture of Spain, but I will also meet and collaborate with a local teacher—Esther Hill, who teaches fifth grade English to Spanish elementary students at Colegio Público las Veredas— with the goal of developing curriculum, designing real-world tasks, and gathering authentic resources for my students. Ms. Hill and I have been coordinating a pen pal project in which our students write letters to each other and explore each other’s cultures, interests, and languages.”

The excellence of the Rowland Hall experience is a result of the generous support we receive from our community. We can’t thank you enough! YOU did iT! Thanks to the generosity of the Rowland Hall community, the 2014-2015 Annual Fund was exceedingly successful, raising $848,022. Not only did the school have a banner year with the total amount raised, but also for the first time since 1999 we reached 80 percent parent participation. Together, those numbers paint a striking picture of exactly how invested our donors are in helping the school achieve its mission to provide an extraordinary education for all our students. Collectively, the ever-devoted Rowland Hall community raised funds to support faculty and staff professional development, enhance math and science programming, and advance technology initiatives, the arts, financial aid, and Rowmark, just to name a few.
32 2014 - 2015 Dear Donors and Friends, Rowland Hall is built on a long-standing history of philanthropy, and we are fortunate that so many families make exceptional education a priority in their homes and in their giving. The Rowland Hall community responded enthusiastically this year when asked for support. The Annual Fund saw the highest rate of parent participation in over a decade, a great indicator of belief in the school.

The installation of the state-ofthe-art sound system and the new infrastructure for the theatrical lighting system should be complete and ready as we begin this school year. This project is an example of how the school uses unrestricted Annual Fund gifts while also leveraging community support to offset costs of critical projects that benefit our student body and the community partners who rent our facilities. Our sincere appreciation goes out to each and every one of Rowland Hall’s donors—parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends—for your unwavering support. Special Thanks to Annual Fund Chairs A huge thank you goes to Anna and Reed Topham for their tireless dedication as last year’s Annual Fund chairs. They worked hard to educate our community on the importance of contributing to the Annual Fund and were invaluable to the fund’s incredible success. We are thrilled that they have agreed to chair the Annual Fund again this year. Faculty and Staff Yet again, our amazing faculty and staff hit the 100 percent participation mark for the Annual Fund. We are deeply thankful for all the families and individuals who make Rowland Hall a priority in their annual contributions and make leadership gifts to the school at the Hallmarker Society levels. Your generosity truly helps make Rowland Hall extraordinary. For the first time since 1990 we will increase each Hallmarker giving level by $500, effective the 2015-2016 school year. This change in our leadership giving levels more closely reflects the philanthropic needs of the school. We sincerely hope our Hallmarker donors will continue to support Rowland Hall as generously in the coming year.
WELCOmE AssOCiATE diRECTOR OF ANNUAL GiViNG
Larissa Trout joined the Rowland Hall development team last fall as associate director of annual giving after serving as the development director at Spy Hop for six years. She has a passion for the arts; innovative, high-quality educational experiences; and creating opportunities for all young people to succeed in today’s ever-changing world. Larissa earned her B.F.A. in modern dance in 2002 from the University of Utah. Her early career as a dancer led her to work for many nonprofits where she found her passion for fundraising to support an array of organizations. Under Larissa’s direction last year, the Annual Fund exceeded its goal, and parent participation was higher than it had been in many years. We are fortunate to have Larissa on the advancement team.

Rowmark Ski Academy was founded in 1982 to offer a rigorous, year-round racing program coupled with an extraordinary academic high school experience for exceptional ski athletes. Each year Rowmark raises money for the Olle Larsson Scholarship Fund to help studentathletes pay their academy tuition. To help with that effort, a group of dedicated families came together this December to plan and host the first-ever Rowmark Invitational and Gala. It was a fabulous day of ski racing, dining, toasting to the success of the program, and of course, fundraising!

Since purchasing the Mount Olivet property adjacent to the McCarthey Campus in 2010, Rowland Hall has had a vision of uniting the entire school on one 23-acre campus.Thisvision came to life with the completion of the first phase of the Richard R. Steiner Campus in March 2014. Our community now has two state-of-the-art synthetic turf playing fields plus stadium seating and landscaping on the site that will one day be the home of the Rowland Hall Middle and Upper schools. Our athletes are excelling on the new fields, with the girls’ varsity soccer team winning both region and state championships. We continue to hear how impressive the new fields are as well as excited questions about the future of the new campus.
So what’s next? This fall we will engage in a feasibility study to determine our community’s level of readiness for the next fundraising efforts. As plans and timelines become clear, we will keep you informed about the exciting future of a new Rowland Hall campus. We are grateful for the generosity of all of those who have already committed to this landmark project.

The Rowland Hall endowment supports two crucially important school goals: increasing student body diversity through financial aid and scholarships, and enhancing faculty development through salaries and training. A student body that is racially, ethnically, religiously, and socio-economically diverse greatly enhances our school community. The school also benefits from the diverse array of talents these students share. To expand the diversity of the student body, we must increase the availability of scholarships and need-based financial assistance.Inaddition to a diverse student body, an innovative and talented faculty drives the school’s educational and extracurricular program. Rowland Hall takes great pride in its ability to attract and retain exceptional educators and we are committed to fairly compensating our faculty. This endowment also ensures that our teachers stay on top of new information, new concepts, and new technologies, and are exposed to the best minds in education.
All gifts to the Campaign Endowment Fund were given or pledged between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.

In addition to the early childhood STEM consultant’s visit, the Julie Ashton Barrett Fellowship also provided funding for the Critical Friends® workshop in which many of our faculty participated this summer. According to the program’s literature, “A Critical Friends Group community is a particular variety of professional learning community consisting of five to 12 members who commit to improving their teaching practice through collaborative learning and structured interactions.”
ANNUAL REPORT 41
Dr. Van Meeteren is a uniquely talented early childhood professor with a strong background in literacy instruction as well as early childhood STEM education. She provided a day of in-service training on August 22, 2014, with hands-on explorations for teachers that enabled them to explore physics concepts and gain insights into how young children construct knowledge.
Shortly before Associate Head of School Julie Barrett retired last spring, a group of former and current Board leaders established, through their generous donations, the Julie Ashton Barrett Teaching and Learning Fellow Endowment. The fellowship is intended to underwrite an annual visit by a master teacher, and this year we were able to invite Beth Van Meeteren, Ph.D., to share her expertise in early childhood learning with our Beginning School teachers.
During her 32-year Rowland Hall career, Julie Barrett championed professional development for our teachers and raised millions to enhance of our students’ learning experience.
Engineering habits of mind are quite accessible to young children, and with Dr. Van Meeteren’s guidance teachers successfully learned new ways to implement science, math, and engineering activities. Wendell Thomas, our director of curriculum and instruction, joined the faculty for part of the day, and he quickly recognized that many of the concepts Dr. Van Meeteren presented were applicable to a school-wide science curriculum and were consistent with the national Next Generation of Science Standards.
If you would like to donate to the Julie Ashton Barrett Teaching and Learning Fellowship, you can do so online at www.rowlandhall.org/giving.
Dr. Van Meeteren, who is the director for the Center for Early Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at the University of Northern Iowa, started her presentation with a quick overview of the newly adopted RH Strategic Plan Goals. After a day with us, she concluded that being the leaders in teaching and learning in the Intermountain West was an achievable goal for our school, and she was eager to continue to collaborate with us in the future.

The following individuals have pledged a future gift of $50,000 or more to the school via the Entrepreneur’s Circle. Anonymous Eric, 89, and Cynthia Baughman Stead and Kendall Burwell, ’96 Ben, ’92, and Erica Dahl Ken
Many individuals within the Rowland Hall community, whether they are associated with the school as alumni, current parents, grandparents, or friends, have made their mark as successful entrepreneurs. To celebrate and share in these individuals’ knowledge and accomplishments, Rowland Hall has created an organization of business professionals and companies, the Rowland Hall Entrepreneur’s Circle. One of our parents, Mike Levinthal, shared this idea with us after he participated in a similar effort with Stanford University.

Opportunities: Circle members are committed to providing current students and alumni, as appropriate, opportunities for professional development, internships, idea sharing, and jobs. Lee Thomsen, Upper School principal, worked with numerous Circle members as the school launched “Beyond the Classroom,” to expand students’ understanding of professional job opportunities.
Networking: The Entrepreneur’s Circle provides an avenue for entrepreneurial-minded people to connect with each other to discuss business ventures, brainstorm ideas, and deepen their ties within the entrepreneurial business community.
iTs THREEFOLd missiON
Giving Back: Entrepreneurs typically recognize that along the path of their success, a number of people played a role and offered help. Circle members believe in giving back to Rowland Hall, the school and community that offered them so much. In order to join the Circle, individuals/families must pledge a future gift to the school of a minimum of $50,000. All gifts will support the school’s endowment. Their gift is dependent upon the success of their entrepreneurial venture.
The 2015 Rowland Hall auction, Le Cirque Gala, was an enormous success. For the past 35 years, the biennial event has provided crucial financial support to the school. This year, attendees and additional supporters donated over $340,000 to support faculty and staff professional development, to build the Richard R. Steiner Campus, and to financial aid.

“The network of special relationships formed at Rowland Hall is something you can carry with you for the rest of your life,” Andrea said. We thank Andrea for joining us and sharing her advice. The Alumni Association is proud and excited to welcome the 67 graduates of the Class of 2015 to its ranks, and we wish them all the best in college and beyond.
Each year, Rowland Hall’s Alumni Association celebrates graduating seniors by officially welcoming them to the organization at the annual Alumni Association Senior Breakfast. The Class of 2015 was honored last spring at the Little America Hotel with the thoughts and insights of guest speaker Andrea Hoffman, ’05, who told the graduates about the personal and professional benefits to being an active alum. Andrea encouraged members of this class to stay in touch with each other, teachers, and coaches; attend events and reunions; and come back for visits.

It is truly a year to celebrate because you made it possible for Rowland Hall to award its Alumni Scholarship for the very first time! We are thrilled that the inaugural Alumni Scholarships have been given to Sam and Grace Smith, twins who will start seventh grade this fall. Their father is alumnus and Rowland Hall faculty member Ben Smith, ’89, who is married to alumna Lindsey Oswald Smith, ’92. We are so excited to have the next generation of the Smith family join the school community as Alumni Scholars!

Everyone who has made a gift to the Alumni Scholarship Fund since it was established in 2010 has made this scholarship award possible, and we thank you—our alumni—and the other friends of the school for your generosity. Together, in the relatively short period of five years, we have been able to create a legacy that provides the gift of a Rowland Hall education. Sam and Grace are the first of what we hope will be a growing number of Alumni Scholars over the years. Thank you to all our donors, and we hope you will share in our excitement, and continue to give, as we celebrate this milestone and look to the future to continue this legacy.

Michael Dew, ’97, enjoyed some amazing fishing in Cabo this year. He is pictured here holding a Rooster fish he landed.
Becky Webster, ’03, married Fred Wuensch on July 3, 2015. We wish the couple many happy years together!Marley Bramble, ’95, is happily living in Salt Lake City, entering her eighth year in real estate. She has enjoyed helping some fellow Rowland Hall alums with their home purchases. Besides working with clients, she spends as much time as she can in Escalante, Utah where she purchased an historic pioneer home. She also travels to as many fantastic diving sites as possible and is working toward her dive masters certification with hopes of teaching scuba.
Christine McCarty, ’70, has been playing and living in Italy since 1981. She has four children, a husband, and many cats in an olive grove. She enjoys doing medieval dances with Accedemia Mediovale, Lanuvio (Roma) Italy. Pictured here, second from left with daughter Allison on far right. Rich Eagar, ’03, is pictured with his wife Sarah and son Caleb. The Eagars currently live in Houston, TX.
