Founded in 1971 by Roland Hammargren, Rowico is a successful family owned furniture business with international acclaim.

With a heritage spanning nearly 50 years our design style has become a firm household favourite through retailers across the globe. Today, at our headquarters in Sweden’s beautiful west coast city of Halmstad, Roland’s grandchildren Fredrik and Jessica Hammargren, the third generation of the family, play an active role in the company’s operations.

Our portfolio contains free-standing furniture in a variety of eclectic styles; from the romantic classics to Scandinavian, contemporary and minimalistic.

Scandinavian furniture in a light finish has quickly reached world wide appeal. Identifying the popularity of this traditional finish and the subsequent consumer buying behaviour towards it, we are proud to have developed our own unique Scandinavian collections, which not only harness the character of the materials used in their creation but are also certified as sustainably sourced.

Implementing environmentally positive practices is one of Rowico’s main focuses. Working towards supporting well managed forestry around the world is important, so important in fact, that during the fall of 2017 an application for audit to become an FSC® acreditted business was passed allowing us to trade in support of the Stewardship Council.

ROWICO goes green Since Rowico’s establishment in 1971, wood has been our most important asset. It is therefore paramount that we work to support well managed and sustainable forestry.

FSC®- A quality stamp.

In the fall of 2017 we were approved to sell FSC-certified goods.

The first FSC-certified furniture rolled out of our Halmstad warehouse in early 2018. Now that we are officially certified we want to focus more on working actively with sustainability by offering FSC furniture globally. Contributing to reduce negative climate impact and to promote more responsible forestry is extremely important to us.

What does an FSC certification mean?

FSC stands for ‘Forest Stewardship Council’, an independent, international members organisation that works for environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically viable use of the world’s forestry resources through its FSC-certification system.

When a Rowico furniture collection is FSC-certified it means that all of the wooden components used in it’s construction are supplied from a responsibly managed forest. Namely, a forest that takes the environment, regeneration and fair trade into account. You are reducing environmental impact by purchasing FSC furniture.

Rowico must have 100% control over its supply chain and stockholding to qualify as FSC-certified. We are regularly reviewed by an external authority to ensure we are maintaining standards. Today We have a series of FSC-certified furniture in the ‘Rowico Goes Green’ collection. Included are BROOKLYN, EVERETT and FRED ranges, as well as the CHI chair and the NARVIK chair. You can see the entire collection at rowico.com.

Tomorrow In the future we want to expand the number of FSC-certified products in our portfolio by increasing our demand for FSC-certified materials amongst our suppliers. Meet Jesper Bergendahl

R&D Manager at Rowico

As the research and development manager at Rowico, Jesper is responsible for the improvement, growth and consumer appeal of our unique collections. He and his team of visionaries develop products and devise new innovations. We asked Jesper about forthcoming trends and the processes behind bringing furniture to market.

It goes without saying that everyone uses furniture in some form or another...but, how do you personally use it?, what practical functions do you look for in any one piece? and ultimately, with such a vast array of readily available eclectic ranges to choose from, which style is it that you prefer?

Furthermore, all of these elements are subject to constant change, and that, for me, makes it even more interesting.

Creating and adjusting a product from scratch, a product that will be used and appreciated for many years to come, makes all the effort we put in seem forever worthwhile.

I regularly see my designs at friends homes, in public places or within interior design magazines, this makes me and the team extremely proud."

What caught your interest in Rowico?

“There were several things actually. I would personally describe Rowico as ‘one big family’, even if that does sound like a stereotypical thing to say in an interview!

Everyone is so dedicated, and this vision is one of the main conditions I need in order to thrive in the work place.

I was also attracted by the company’s journey and processes. Rowico were exploring new and updated product ranges and this market approach appealed to me.

Since conception, many of our furniture pieces have stood the test of time and continue to be an integral part of Rowico’s identity. However, today sees us focusing on creating a fresh new, stylish look whilst still upholding the same fundamental values of former years.

My experienced co-workers and I are a part of this directive, we are embracing the project and find it very stimulating as well as challenging."

Tell us a bit about yourself.

“I come from a family where we, historically speaking, have always been inventive and creative. My first creative role was fulfilled when I became a chef, and this continued long after my promotion to kitchen manager. The making, the tempo and significant elements of creativity were the motivation in my work, and I still love to cook today.

I eventually chose to leave the culinary domain and turned to furniture about 15 years ago. I have worked with purchasing, production, marketing, product research and development at several companies in Sweden. For the past six years, my job has been to focus more on product development. For almost twelve months now I have been working on developing our furniture appeal here at Rowico."

Why furniture?

“There are many reasons for my love of furniture, at the age of 15 I bought my first pieces of furniture with a view to remodelling them and took great pleasure in giving them my very own personal make over, this, you could say, were my first steps into practical design.

FACTS ABOUT JESPER Jesper is 39 years old and lives in Helsingborg with his wife and children.

He is a relatively new addition to the Rowico family, having been with us for almost one year!

He has an impressive history within the furniture industry and has developed both indoor and outdoor products.

When he was 15 years old he brought his first pieces of furniture and gave them his very own make over, an old armchair got a new undercarriage and an accompanying table was also re-styled.

“A lot of my inspiration emerges from requirement. That may sound odd, but I have noticed how people tend to change their lifestyle over time. If I can solve a functional problem with an appealing shape, it is more of an exciting challenge than if I were to only think about the form and forget the function."

What kind of challenges do you face in your work?

“Conceiving ideas and developing designs is not an exacting science, it takes time, effort and vision to achieve.

Making any one product functional and fit for purpose isn’t necessarily the challenge, making it visually appealing at the same time is. For example, a chair is not only a chair, it is not enough that it is comfortable, durable, stable, well built etc, our customers need to like the look of it too.

I often say that if it’s just the function of ‘sitting’ we have to solve, we could do so by simply perching on a tree stump, but of course, it isn’t that simple, everything we create needs both a mass market and visual appeal in the hope of making it another Rowico timeless classic."

“Not everyone can think this way all of the time. It is very easy to become too narrow-minded about your own personal tastes and sometimes even easier to forget to conceive ideas that will attract the wider public. Luckily, I have people around me who act as my sounding board, such as my colleagues and family. They help me test my designs and each of their opinions matter to me greatly.

Another challenge is to find the right supplier for the pieces we want to produce. Raw materials are fast becoming more mixed. Rowico is working alongside the Stewardship Council now to ensure sustainable production is upheld,

which means that, in particular, wooden materials must have complete tracability, coupled with our high expectation regarding ethical working conditions.”

Tell us about Rowico’s furniture portfolio.

“At this very moment in time we are working on around 200 new products, so that’s a lot to describe! ...but in brief, we are currently concentrating on the design and development of our own house design style. Dining spaces play an integral part through many of our collections and we are looking to expand these, both in varying styles and types of materials used. We’ll be using metal, which is an important substrate to us, as is one of our primary materials, wood."

"One of my favourite designs at the moment is an FSC-certified furniture series that combines both metal and wood. It is clean and simple, yet extremely appealing, thanks to the materials contributing to its construction.

Another favourite is a new chair with a distinctive shape that harks back to an era now passed. There really are so many more great ideas in the pipeline too.”

extremely desirable, why do you think this is?

“We have a heritage managed successfully throughout Sweden, Denmark and Finland with designers like Alvar Aalto, Kaj Franck, Börge Mogensen and Bruno Mathsson paving the way. Scandinavian design, unlike others, reflects simplicity and functionality. A lot of the furniture created in a Scandinavian style isn’t that advanced, but classics become exactly that because of timeless design and uncompromising quality, essentially this is the embodiment of Scandinavian furniture. Today many new Scandinavian companies have capitalised on this heritage and distinct identity. These companies have made it impossible not to recognise a Scandinavian design. The launch of these stylish yet straight forward designs continue to attract attention, encouraging further development and new ideas for the future.”

an appealing shape, it is more of an exciting challenge than if I were to only think about the form and forget the function. I always want to offer an experience to the users of our furniture. It should not be viewed, for example, as just a table or just a chair, but instead be deemed a decorative art form. A creative exhibit in your home to be enjoy, by all, for years to come. I get my inspiration from many different sources. It can be anything from food to clothes. I collect ideas from places I visit locally to me and also on my travels further-a-field. Be it a bird cage used as a lamp shade in a small Vietnamese restaurant, or an old crooked table outside an Italian cafe, or the old stickback chair that has been around my grandmother’s dining table ever since I can remember. All of these objects provide a source of inspiration and will feature in forthcoming designs.”

Are there any future trends you can foresee?

“As the years pass it gets more difficult to identify specific trends, but it is quite clear that metal and wood are now being combined more frequently than before. I also see that larger, more bulky furniture is fast becoming less desirable to consumers and that dimensions and styles are now much cleaner and better proportioned. We are seeing more soft edges and ergonomic shapes, fabrics with character and texture, distinct colour palettes and a more dominant playfulness in the designs. For us Scandinavians, wood is the most important element in a broad range of colours, from blonde ash to dark oak. Many homes combine other natural materials such as wicker or rattan, mainly as chairs, lamps and baskets. White pieces of furniture have always featured in Swedish heritage, but you will find warmer grey tones starting to feature in coming collections."

The furniture Rowico produces mainly consist of wood.

What is it about wood that is so interesting to work with?

“I spend a lot of my free time in nature, and wood is, of course, one of the materials I like the most when I am doing my job. A lot of people forget that their kitchen table started its journey 200 years ago when a seed began to grow. Wood is an amazing material and if you take care of it correctly, it can be used for 100’s of years to come. If you keep in mind that wood is a renewable and recyclable resource, it isn’t hard to appreciate that a product made of wood is an excellent environmental choice.

I am fascinated by the diversity the material can offer, and by the fact that each wood type has its own possibilities.

I try to visit the plantations where our wood is processed because I want to see it’s origin and get a better understanding of the natural conditions different wood types are a subject to.”

What inspires you?

“For me, this is the most challenging question to answer.

I get my inspiration from colour, light and form. So, you could say, literally everything around me! A lot of my inspiration emerges from requirement. That may sound odd, but I have noticed how people tend to change their lifestyle over time. If I can solve a functional problem with

What is so appealing about wooden furniture?

“I wish people understood to a greater extent that well built furniture made of wood is the best choice for the environment. Quality furniture is not only a good investment for your home, but also the future of our planet. Most furniture is made from wood or has wood in one or many of it’s components, but I also think it creates a more wholesome feeling than if you choose to use materials like steel and glass. I believe that many people relate to wooden pieces more because our forests are so vast in Scandinavia.”

Do you have a favourite piece of furniture?

“There are many pieces of furniture I like for different reasons. The DUX chair I previously mentioned is kind of a favourite, because it was a great memory for me re-styling it. I think furniture becomes special when it is connected to a memory or a feeling. “The Spanish chair” by Börge Mogensen, our Danish neighbour is at the top of my wish list. If you ask me to mention some of Rowico’s present designs, our new table, Everett, is a good example of what I have just been talking about; steel infused with solid wood, a combination that you will never tire of. It will still be as appealing at 20 years as it is in 200."

In your opinion, what is most important when looking at a piece of furniture, the looks, functionality, sustainability or something else?

“It has to be everything you mention. If a piece of furniture only meets one of the above three criteria, it isn’t good enough to make the Rowico portfolio! Even if it only fits two of the criteria, it still isn’t good enough! When a consumer perceives a product to be attractive and it performs well for their own unique lifestyle - then we have succeeded in creating great furniture."

Meet Mirelle Stoor

Swedish Interior designer & influencer.

We met Mirelle at her house in Strömsholm.

Mirelle has our Nottingham cabinet in her beautiful home which she showed us how to best dress and style to achieve two very different looks.

Tell us about your interior design style? ”I have a very personal style. I buy things that I think are beautiful, rather than according to what’s currently on trend. I decorate to create well-being and let my instinct guide me. I like to mix bohemian objects, design classics, second-hand finds and my own designs. It took me roughly three years to complete our previous apartment to my own level of perfection and when I was finally finished ...we moved! Interior design is an ongoing process, I’m always finding new brands, materials, designs and colours I like."

What is it that you most like about the Nottingham cabinet?

“I love the contrast between the dark finish and the glass, as it creates a natural eye-catching attraction. I see the cabinet as both a piece of free-standing furniture and a cupboard which allows me to broaden my creativity across purposes. It is a wonderfully robust cabinet which would sit comfortably in a multitude of varying styled interiors."

Which styles did you choose for the Nottingham cabinet and why? ”I chose the two styles I think best reflect the decor in my own home; one with a bohemian twist, the other more luxurious and sumptious."

Tell us about the choices made in your styling? ”I have chosen specific objects from my home as the inspiration and decorated the cabinet with these. My goal is to show how easily you can change a cabinets look and to demonstrate the amazing possibilities there are to create an interesting piece of furniture/interior detail for your home. A glazes cabinet is kind of like working with a large dollhouse ...suitable for adults! With relatively small changes you can alter the cabinet’s appearance. A cabinet can really work well in any room. They are as beautiful in a kitchen as they are in a living room ...or why not place it in the bathroom?, there really is no right or wrong."

Where do you get your inspiration? ”I get most of my inspiration from social media, my own environment and in nature. It all depends on what I am looking for at the time. If I want to find inspiration for myself, I turn to nature, if I’m about to find inspiration for DIY-projects or interior design projects I read everything I can find on all the exquisite social media channels. If I am about to do something new in my own home, I spend a lot of time in that room. I feel, think and try to let myself get a sense of the room, a phrase that Ernst Kirchsteiger so cleverly coined."

Which room in your home are you most proud of and why?

“I think I have to say the kitchen. We have built everything from scratch, and it has been demanding work. There are many hours invested in this kitchen which helped prove to us that we were slightly more skilled than we initially thought we were."

What is the most important factor when purchasing furniture? ”Looks and quality are really important to me. Above all I want the furniture to have a timeless look and not be something that is temporarily on trend. I want to love my furniture, and I want the pieces to be used for many years to come. The function of the furniture is of course also a crucial factor."

Are there any future styles and trends that you believe in? ”I believe in a simple style, natural materials in textiles and well-chosen details. There is nothing as inspiring as when you succeed with creating an environment with a cosy and content look by using only a few objects. Handmade ceramics, rustic wood and hefty plants should be given extra attention. Beige and tones indicative of nature will always work all year round."

Can you give us some styling tips? ”My best styling tips go hand in hand with Feng Shui.

Decorate your home with lovely green plants, fabrics using natural materials and hidden storage. Be brave and let that one piece of interior detail you love be visible, even if it isn’t in style right now. One thing people tend to forget is to think about the lighting. In an average sized room, we need as much as 5-7 different light sources to create a balanced lighting effect."

Give us some Feng Shui tips!? ”When I work according to Feng Shui, I always make sure I have done all of the things I mentioned above, but you should also keep these in mind too;

1. Avoid having a TV in your bedroom.

2. Make your hallway feel welcoming.

3. Place your couch and bed in powerful positions.

4. Use opposites to achieve a balance. Dark/Ligh & High/ Low and so on.

5. Greenery is energy, so make sure you fill your home with

plants. An orchid suits the bedroom as it will oxygenate a space naturally.

Interior decorator at Rowico Anna K Nilsson Anna K Nilsson is the stylist responsible for the interiors in our stunning photos.

Anna has been part of the Rowico family for many years.

Anna is our Creative coordinator and Interior decorator.

She is responsible for our commercial photography, social media, trade show styling and our showroom.

"Today I am doing what I love– Interior Design. It is my absolute passion. Since I was a child I have constantly updated the look and feel of a room. My inspiration comes from many sources and although working creatively can be challenging it is so much fun too. We create different environments with our furniture, using it in many different ways. Looking to inspire, create desire, achieve unique looks and aspirational dreams. Our furniture has to be commercial yet harmonise with both current and future trends."

How do you find your inspiration?

"It comes from many sources. These include nature, colour, textures also memories, pictures and moods. People I meet as well as my friends and family. I also love to browse Pintrest, Instagram and other social media platforms and magazines can also inspire."

ANNAS TIPS: • The key to enhancing a room is light.

Global, work and mood lighting all uplift a space.

• Create a mood board, it helps you balance an interior and provides a clearer path to your objective.

• Devise a colour scheme based around a favorite colour and select similar hues that harmonize.

• Adorn areas of your space with natural materials, it adds character and depth to your home and conveys personality.

• Focus on what it is that excites you.

Surround yourself with inspiration. We are influenced by our environment more than we imagine.

• Take your time - Creating your own personal style can take time.
