Another major club at IDS, the Cartesian Math Club, continues to play an active role in organizing and facilitating math-related activities that cater to the Hornets' creative and brilliant minds in thefieldofMathematics.Wehavesupportedstudentsparticipating in both local and international math competitions, including the PMO, TIMO, HKIMO, PhIMO, and ODSMO. With so many events, it's challenging to recall which came first or who won, not to mention ournumerouscampusactivities.Thisyearmarksapivotalmoment for us post-pandemic, and documenting and sharing these achievements showcases the hard work of participants, coaches, andclubofficers.

We proudly present AXIS, the official update from the Cartesian MathClub.ThroughAXIS,weaimtohighlighthowyourschoolmates have engaged in the world of mathematics and inspire you to develop an interest in math starting today. We believe that though we are bound by time in our high school life, our pursuit of knowledge is limitless, like the Cartesian plane's axis extending to infinity.

Thequalifyingstageofthe26thPhilippineMathematicalOlympiad(PMO)—oneofthe mostprestigiousmathematicscompetitionsinthePhilippines—recentlyconcludedon December2,2023.

WiththecontestbeingheldatMSU-IIT CollegeofScienceandMathematics(CSM) asthetestingsitefortheMindanaoregion, theeventsawtwenty-tworepresentatives fromtheIntegratedDevelopmentalSchool (IDS).PMOisdesignedtopromotethe appreciationofmathematicsandrecognize mathematically-giftedstudents,collectively forthepurposeofdiscoveringthecountry’s nextdelegatesfortheInternational MathematicalOlympiad(IMO).

InpreparationforthePMO,theCartesian MathClub(CMC),incollaborationwiththe facultymembersoftheMathematics Department,organizedaneliminationround todeterminetheschool'srepresentatives. Followingtheselectionprocess,participants underwentweeklytrainingsessionsforover amonthguidedbyseveralmathematics teacherswhofacilitateddifferentsubjects includingnumbertheory,arithmetic, probability,algebra,statistics,geometry,

Amidstthebeginningoftheschoolyear, MSU-IITIntegratedDevelopmentalSchool (IDS)hasuphelditsinternationalolympiad standingswithanimpressiveperformance atthe2023ThailandInternational MathematicalOlympiad(TIMO)HeatRound onAugust25,2023.Despitetheabsenceof formaltraining,IDSproudlycelebratedthe achievementsofhavingonegoldawardee, threebronzeawardees,andfourmerit awardees.

With995participantscompetingintwosubjectcategories,scienceandmathematics,the competitionferventlytestedtheknowledgeandskillsofyoungminds.Notably,MSU-IITIDS madearemarkabledebutinthecompetition,fieldingparticipantsfromgradelevels7to 12inbothsubjectcategories.

ThePhilippineInternationalMathematicsOlympiad(PhIMO)isaprestigiousmathematics competitiondesignedforstudentsfromdifferentcountriestoshowcasetheir mathematicalskillsandknowledgeanditwasheldonApril14,2024.Thisyear,the IntegratedDevelopmentalSchool(IDS)proudlyparticipatedintheOlympiad,after diligentlysharpeningtheskillandtalentsoftheirstudentrepresentatives.These participantsweredividedbetweenthreesecondarylevelsthatcorrespondedtotheir respectivegradelevels.

Astrongcompetitorforthesecondarylevelone,JabezHseinRara,aseventhgrade studentfromthesectionBeta,deliveredaprodigiousperformancethatshowcasedhis exceptionalskillsandextensiveknowledgeinmathematics,winninghimagoldmedal.On thesecondsecondarylevel,AimanCarim,astudentfromGrade8-Kappa,demonstrated hisimpressivetalentthatearnedhimawell-deservedmeritaward.Lastly,butcertainly notleast,inthesecondarylevel3competition,AmanahAylaLampingfromGrade9-Rho exhibitedanoutstandingperformancewhichledhertosecurethebronzemedal.

AtMSU-IITIDS,thisdaydidn'tgounnoticed, thankstotheeffortsoftheCartesianMath Club(CMC)whoorchestratedtheminievent. ThedaybeganwiththeCMCsharingintriguing factsandtriviaaboutPiDayonsocialmedia, settingthestageforthefestivities.Following thisdigitalkickoff,asmall-scaleactivitywas held,centeredaroundamathematical challengedesignedtotestbothintellectand creativity.

Dubbedthe"3-1-4PiDayChallenge,"thetask wastousethedigits3,1,and4exactlyonce each,alongwithanymathematicalsymbolor operation,tocreateexpressionsequivalentto thenumbersbetween1and30.The challenge

station,locatedinthetrophyarea,becamea hubofactivitythroughouttheday,welcoming studentstoattemptthepuzzleattheir convenience.Thisinclusivityallowedeveryone toparticipate,regardlessoftheirschedule.The atmospherebuzzedwithconcentrationas studentseagerlyworkedtocrackthe challenge,pencilsclickingandmindswhirring withcalculation.Thosewhosucceededwere rewardedwithschoolsupplies—namely correctiontapesandcolorfulhighlighters— duringtheflagceremonythefollowingweek. Math Olympiad Wonder

In an extraordinary display of mathematical prowess, Jabez Hsien Rara, a Grade 7 student at MSU-IIT Integrated Developmental School, has earned both the coveted Gold Award and the 2nd-Runner Up trophy under primary 6 category at the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) 2023 Final Round Onsite. This remarkable achievement was realized during the competition held on August 26, 2023, in the city of Hong Kong.

Jabez Hsien Rara's journey to mathematical excellence began during his elementary years at Tambo Central School. Despite coping with mathematics as one of his most challenging subjects, he embarked on a path of resilience. His motivation to excel and make his family proud led him to explore the world of math Olympiads.

Among the mathematical challenges he faced, permutations and combinations in combinatorics left a mark on Jabez. Lacking formal training in this area, he undertook rigorous self-study to master these concepts.

Now, as a student at MSU-IIT IDS, Jabez eagerly anticipates receiving the guidance and support of his teachers to further refine his mathematical skills and prepare for future math Olympiads. His dedication to the subject and determination continue to be his driving forces.

Jabez Hsien Rara's success is not limited to the HKIMO. He also participated in the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad last March 31, 2023. Furthermore, he is primed for yet another challenges as he prepares for the Philippine International Mathematical Olympiad (PhIMO) on September 22-25, 2023, in Davao City, and the World International Mathematical Olympiad on January 5-6, 2024, in Vietnam. In recognition of his remarkable achievements, Jabez was recently honored by the LGU Iligan. His journey serves as an inspiring testament of dedication among high school students in the pursuit of academic excellence.
