Don’t forget a small power strip–ideal for sharing a crowded outlet in an airport, and a simple way to keep all devices close by once at a hotel. (Combine that with a Zolt–which powers a laptop and two devices with a charger the size of a lipstick–and it’s even handier.) Keep a photograph of your luggage and passport on your smartphone; lose either of them, and you’ll be grateful for the reference. Pack a scarf–always.

NOT LONG AGO, 49 SOUTH AFRICANS BOARDED A CHARTERED FLIGHT TO THE USA IN WHAT’S BEEN DUBBED THE “GREAT TSEK”, A GROUP OF AFRIKANERS LEAVING TO PURSUE THE SO-CALLED AMERICAN DREAM UNDER DONALD TRUMP’S OFFER TO “DISCRIMINATED” SAFFAS.

But let’s be real: South Africa isn’t perfect – we know this. Still, we’re a tough, passionate bunch. And no matter our race, religion or background, if there’s one thing that unites us, it’s sport.

Ever heard the phrase “No DNA, just RSA”? That’s us.

Sport that unites us all

Right now, SA is riding a sporting high. The Springboks have sparked national pride with electrifying performances, while the Blitzboks, Bafana Bafana, and youth teams like Amajita remind us that excellence is in our blood.

Icons like Benni McCarthy (a Champions League winner), Caster Semenya (forever a trailblazer), and UFC fighter Dricus du Plessis show the world what South Africans are made of. Rayno Nell, our World’s Strongest Man, takes it even further — proving that our talent isn’t just diverse, it’s global.

Add to that our cricket stars, medal-worthy swimmers, and rising basketball teams, and you’ll see: we don’t just compete — we belong on the world stage.

Where the hustle meets lifestyle

— each with a smile and a story. Where else does that happen? Here, humanity and connection are woven into everyday life. We call it Ubuntu — “I am because we are” — and you’ll feel it everywhere you go.

Flavours that tell a story

Mzansi’s big cities — Joburg, Cape Town, Durban — are buzzing with opportunity. Think fast-growing tech, buzzing creative industries, and spaces where business meets lifestyle. Add world-class infrastructure, thriving industries (from mining to agriculture to finance), and growing support for entrepreneurs, and you’ve got a country that’s open for business.

Plus, SA is the gateway to Africa — ideal for brands and businesses ready to expand across the continent.

So why would we leave when the future is unfolding right here?

A rainbow nation of real people

Ever walked down a street and heard five different languages in five minutes? That’s South Africa — the original Rainbow Nation. Our people are as diverse as our landscapes, and honestly, they’re some of the friendliest you’ll ever meet. When I first arrived in Cape Town, I got lost downtown. Within minutes, three people had stopped to help

Take bobotie, often called our national dish — a Cape Malay classic of spiced mince, baked with a golden egg custard and served with yellow rice and chutney. Or boerewors, the beloved farmer’s sausage, full of coriander and nutmeg, sizzling on nearly every braai (that’s South African for barbecue). And speaking of braais — they’re not just meals; they’re events — a gathering of friends, family, laughter, and stories under the stars. Then there’s biltong, vetkoek, potjiekos, bunny chow, koeksisters and its Capetonian cousin the koesister – every dish here has a history — and a heartbeat.

SARUGBY

Big nature, bigger adventures

Here, weekends aren’t ordinary. Hike Lion’s Head, spot the Big Five in Kruger, surf Jeffreys Bay, or sip wine in Stellenbosch.

Mzansi gives you mountains, beaches, bush and city buzz — all within a few hours’ drive. As one wise local said: “Life’s too short to stay indoors — especially in South Africa.”

Living large for less

Compared to Europe or North America, your rands stretch far. Think spacious homes, affordable eats, help around the house, and access to good schools and healthcare.

A friend visiting from London once said, “I feel like royalty here.” And honestly? That’s not far off.

Sunshine for the soul

Seasonal depression? Not here. With sunshine nearly year-round, South Africa is an outdoor lover’s dream. Even our winters are mild, perfect for cosy fires and a glass of Stellenbosch’s finest glass of red wine. It’s the kind of climate that makes life feel brighter, literally and figuratively.

A place to grow

Mzansi isn’t just a scenic backdrop — it’s a place to thrive. With renewed energy in sectors like tech, tourism, and renewable energy, and the easing of load-shedding thanks to solar solutions, the business climate is shifting positively. Investors are paying attention and locals are rising to the challenge. Our universities like UCT, Wits, and Stellenbosch are world-renowned, and our creative

and entrepreneurial communities are flourishing. If you want a life where work matters and living feels full – this is it.

Safety: The honest truth

Yes, safety is a concern, and yes, things are improving. Community policing is growing, tech is making neighbourhoods safer, and people are more aware and connected than ever. With smart choices, you can live confidently – just like millions of locals do daily. Add improving healthcare and solid infrastructure, and you’ve got a country that’s learning, adapting, and getting better.

The Mzansi Magic

South Africa isn’t just a place – it’s a feeling. It’s dancing at a township market, a golden Karoo sunset, a spontaneous braai with strangersturned-friends. It’s the laughter, the struggle, the rhythm, the realness. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

Start watering the grass on your side. Because sometimes, it is greener right here in Mzansi. IB

DAD’S THE WORD!

IT’S FATHER’S DAY THIS MONTH, SO WE’VE GONE IN SEARCH OF SOME OF SA’S MOST BELOVED CELEB DADS AND ASKED THEM WHAT THEY LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A FATHER. HERE’S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY...

Actor Soli Philander: Dad of five

There’s a way your child names you that evokes feelings in you... a nuance in your soul that only they can provoke, simply by being. It’s in the way they claim you as theirs – “My dad, father mine...” – and in the countless ways they lift your heart, soar your spirit, and give wings to your hope for tomorrow. They bring you closer to yourself, helping to define the requirements of personhood and parenthood – the need for you to be your best self, manifesting your particular expression of love. And when your children grow into adults, there’s a deep, constant joy knowing you played a part in shaping them.

Radio and TV presenter Kyeezi: A new Dad

I’m still very new to this, to be honest... But what I love most about being a dad right now is seeing my son growing every day. There’s something new every day. It could be a new sound he’s making, or his trying to figure out how to get back up when he falls… And though he can’t say that many words yet, I can tell there’s a lot going on in that brain of his. I love being a dad because my son reminds me every day that life is worth living.

Comedian Carvin Goldstone: Dad of three

What I love about being a dad is knowing the buck stops with me for the provision of my children and family. As a man, being a dad has given me great drive and purpose. It’s also fun to be Dad to children at three very different stages of life and development. I have a 16-year-old that I’m more of a coach and guide to, a nine-year-old that really needs me to be playmate and instructor, and an eightmonth-old who is fully dependent. Being present is the best blessing you can give your kids, and yourself as a father. There’s a beautiful fulfilment in being present for their milestones, their victories and their disappointments. You get to appreciate their development that way.

Comedian Kurt Schoonraad: Dad of one

Apart from the endless supply of sticky handprints on my car windows, and stepping on Lego like it’s a martial arts test (back in the day when he was still small), I’d say it’s the comedy material. Jack (15) is really funny and has been my best heckler ever since he learned to talk. He once asked if I was famous anywhere. But honestly, being Jack’s dad is my best role yet. Watching him grow into this wonderful, empathetic, and emotionally in-touch human makes my heart full – right before he drains my wallet and eats all the snacks.

Actor Gershwin Mias: Dad of one

I love the father-daughter connection I have with my two-year-old, Raeesah. It’s a deep love and bond that’s indescribable and so surreal. Being a father to her is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. We spend loads of time together and I feel we’re the best fatherdaughter duo when it comes to playing, chilling or just drawing together. She usually (out of the blue) tells me I’m her best friend and that she loves me. That always melts my heart!

Actor Altus Theart: Dad of one

It’s hard to quote just one. At times it’s the scariest thing, and the next moment I can’t imagine my life before him! It’s the combination of things and the different doses of EVERYTHING, that I love! The pure joy when he sees me at school pickup; the random “I love you, Paps!”... The cuddles at night; the way I still learn from him, and the way he humbles me to my knees to wipe away a tear after a fall off his bike. And realising that this whole little human being is completely dependent on ME. I’m a better person because of him and I love him more than anything in this world.

NIGEL PIERCE IS BACK!

AFELICIA MEETS KERI!

TV icon Felicia Mabuza-Suttle (far left) recently had a fab run-in with R&B star Keri Hilson at her favourite American bistro and naturally, she shared the moment on Instagram. Gushing over Hilson’s warmth and talent, Felicia called it a true #ubuntu moment, celebrating that South African spirit of connection and humanity.

In her usual playful style, Felicia joked, “Obviously, I’m too ‘young’ to know much about the new R&B stars. I’m stuck in the era of the older ones.” Fans loved it – and her continued knack for spotlighting powerful voices.

fter a six-year radio silence, Nigel Pierce has made a thunderous return to the airwaves! The legendary broadcaster is now co-hosting Heart 104.9 FM’s Drive Show (weekdays 3–7pm) with Jamie-Lee Domburg (far right) and Jeremy Harris.

Listeners were glued to their radios for his comeback on 5 May, where Nigel (pictured centre right) certainly didn’t hold back. He spoke candidly about his dramatic exit from GoodHope FM, saying, “I’m not shy about sharing what I’ve been through.”

His signature energy and wild storytelling had fans hooked, and thrilled to have his voice back on the air.

HELEN ZILLE’S ROAST HAS SA IN STITCHES

Helen Zille being roasted on Showmax? Yep, it’s a thing, and it’s hilarious. The roast dropped in May and quickly went viral, with fans, foes, and everyone in between tuning in to see the DA’s former leader get grilled (with love).

The show’s mix of sharp humour and surprisingly warm moments struck a chord, turning political banter into belly laughs. Say what you will about Zille, she knows how to take a joke.

LIZZO IS BACK – AND “STILL BAD”

LRIHANNA’S BABY NO. 3 REVEAL STEALS THE MET

Trust Rihanna to drop major news in serious style. On her way to the Met Gala, the superstar casually revealed she’s expecting her third child with rapper A$AP Rocky. Dressed head-to-toe in Miu Miu (grey blouse, matching skirt and boots, fur stole, and a chic cloche hat) Rihanna’s bump made its Insta debut thanks to photographer Miles Diggs. A$AP Rocky, who co-chaired the event (celebrating Black dandyism), confirmed the news on the red carpet: “Thank you, thank you, thank you... we’re definitely happy.” Rihanna’s no stranger to headline-making reveals! Remember her Super Bowl baby bump in 2023? She and Rocky are already parents to sons RZA (born May 2022) and Riot (August 2023). Baby number three? Iconic timing, as always...

izzo’s feeling herself again! The four-time GRAMMY and Emmy winner just dropped a fresh version of her fan-fave demo “Still Bad”, now with the sassy subtitle “Animal Style”.

Sharing the remix across socials, Lizzo called it a celebration of where she’s been and where she’s going. Earlier this year, she hinted at a new era with a dramatic post and a dreamy trailer for “Love In Real Life” – flute included, naturally.

“Still Bad (Animal Style)” is streaming now, everywhere – and of course we had to include it in our June On The Charts (on page XX). Alexa, turn up the volume!

NICK CANNON’S $10 MILLION BALLS (YES, REALLY)

Nick Cannon’s most prized assets are now insured for $10 million. Speaking on the Tea Time With Raven & Miranda podcast, the dad of 12 said the idea started as a joke. “Well, see, that’s the thing, I personally didn’t. Someone else took the insurance policy out on them. It started off like, ‘Well that would be a good joke,’ but we really went through with it.” Cannon revealed the insurance policy was offered to him by Dr Squatch, a cosmetic company primarily known manscaping products. The idea originated after the company noted that many female celebrities had been insuring their legs. “They asked what my most valuable asset was, and I said, ‘My balls!’” Nick shared. Honestly? Fair.

Mic check, DANTÉ IS ON AIR

FROM KIDS’ TV FAVE TO RADIO RISING STAR, DANTE POOLE IS BRINGING GOOD VIBES AND REAL TALK TO THE AIRWAVES. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO CHAT DREAMS, YOUTH MONTH, AND WHY BEING YOURSELF IS THE ULTIMATE FLEX.

Let’s be honest: who didn’t want to be a presenter growing up? We’d leg it home from school, ditch our backpacks, and plonk ourselves in front of the telly to catch our fave shows. For loads of South African kids, those dreams were sparked by the likes of Candice Hillebrand, Roxy Burger, Sade Giliberti, Dr Musa Mthombeni (back when he was just Musa), Hulisani Ravele, Laurian Nortje and, of course, Danté Poole.

Fast-forward a few years, and Danté’s still got that star power, but now he’s swapped the screen for the airwaves. With a background in performance and storytelling (and a SAFTA nom to prove it), he’s bringing all the good vibes to Kfm 94.5 with his brand-new show, Early Sundays with Danté Poole

And with Youth Month being celebrated in June, a time to honour the fearless young people who stood up during the fight against apartheid, especially on 16 June (National Youth Day), it felt like the perfect time to chat to someone who’s all about uplifting and inspiring the next generation.

So, on a sunny winter’s day, I caught up with Danté to talk about chasing dreams, switching gears, and why being yourself is your ultimate superpower.

A star is born

Danté’s big break came at 19 when he was plucked from a sea of applicants to co-host the youth-focused show Hectic On 3 on SABC 3. His charisma and infectious energy soon won over young audiences, making him a household name in South Africa. After three successful seasons, he moved on to host the beloved Hectic Nine-9 on SABC 2, a role that

earned him a SAFTA nomination for Best Television Presenter.

“I’ve always had a natural flair for performance,” Danté reflects. “Growing up, I was encouraged to dream big.” That support gave him the push he needed to dive into the world of entertainment. From MC gigs to event hosting, he laid the groundwork early on for what would become a thriving career.

But after years of owning the kids’ TV space, Danté was ready for something new. In 2023, he joined Kfm as a field correspondent, where his animated storytelling instantly clicked with listeners. It didn’t take long before he landed his own slot – and just like that, Early Sundays was born.

Ease into your Sundays

Early Sundays, which airs every Sunday from 5am to 7am, is designed to ease listeners into their day with themes centred around lifestyle, family plans, and transforming Sundays into fun-filled experiences.

Now 26-years-old, Danté’s aim is to provide a blend of meaningful conversations and invigorating music to uplift his audience.

“So much of what I learned doing live youth TV feeds into what I do now,” he explains. “It taught me how to think on my feet, be present and, most importantly, how to connect with people in a real way.

“A part of growing is knowing when to move on, taking the wisdom and skills you’ve learned and applying them to a different space that will challenge you in a new and exciting way. That has been my journey so far, making the move from television to radio.”

What’s next?

Could we see Danté make a return to our screens? “Who knows what’s next? Maybe a lifestyle show... maybe a game show! The possibilities are endless. The world is my oyster, and I’m ready for whatever comes next.”

When asked what message he has for the youth of South Africa, he lights up, “Authenticity is everything. There’s no one else like you, and that’s your superpower. I’ve learned that being yourself, fully and unapologetically, will always set you apart. One of my biggest inspirations growing up was American singer and actress, Keke Palmer, especially for her role in Akeelah and the Bee.”

He shares a quote from the film, originally by Marianne Williamson, that he says still gives him goosebumps: “As we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same.”

“That’s the energy I try to bring into everything I do. Dream big, lead with love, and most of all – be you. Honestly, that’s when the magic happens.” IB

Callum Hitchcock has featured on Comedy Central’s Savanna Comedy Bar, he’s been a regular on the “Comedy Report” segment of the popular e.tv show, The Last Word with Shahan Ramkissoon, and he’s also a regular player on the SAFTA-winning web-series, Politically Aweh

Hitchcock’s Eastern-Cape Native was nominated for the Breakthrough Act of the Year award at the 2025 Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards.

What was your break into comedy?

I never wanted to do it; I thought everyone fancied themselves as funny. After years of just being a silly kid, I warmed up to the idea that I might be able to make people laugh and found an open mic night – and it was just the most amazing feeling!

immediate and honest feedback. So maybe, weirdly, comedy is... a healthy workplace? Still, no medical aid.

What inspires your jokes?

I like to dig into the weird contradictions in life. The things we all do but never question. I love hearing the little things that people say that reveal more than they thought, like when that one Aunt comments four times too many on how she’s planning a girls’ trip to the Seychelles.

What’s the first thing you do when nobody laughs at your joke?

When I was a teenager, I played bagpipes in the East London Caledonian Society Pipe Band. Yes, I did. The band ethos laid down by my godfather, Pipe Major Robert Rankin, was: ‘If you’re going to make a mistake, make it with ABSOLUTE confidence.’ And that’s pretty much my approach. Also, playing the bagpipes in a kilt in front of your high school peers in the 2010s is the kind of ego death that prepares you for comedy.

How do you prepare for your stand-up set?

If it’s a new set, I’ll pace around my apartment talking to myself like a detective who’s just cracked a case. For a corporate event, I’ll research the company meticulously to tailor jokes (Yes, I will roast your boss for you). If it’s a big show, I go full ritual mode – music, breathing exercises... and I convince myself that laughter is inevitable. And if all else fails, I just remind myself that no matter how badly it goes, my wife will still giggle at my stupid comments on the way home.

Is there a Plan B, career-wise? Which would you choose?

Outside of stand-up, I also write comedy for other performers, do corporate MC work, and occasionally act. If I had to choose another career, I’d probably be a historian or an architect. Something where I still get to analyse the world but with fewer hecklers. Although I hear academia is where hecklers thrive... IB

BOBBY VAN JAARSVELD

KYK WAAR IS ONS NOU!

SINGER-SONGWRITER AND ACTOR BOBBY VAN JAARSVELD HAS DOMINATED THE AFRIKAANS POP ROCK SCENE FOR TWO DECADES, CAPTURING AUDIENCES ACROSS LANGUAGE BARRIERS, AND EVEN WOWING US WITH HIS ACTING PROWESS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT IT TOOK (AND MEANS) TO BE SO BELOVED BY MILLIONS.

What inspired you to become a singer?

My parents sang, and it has always been a massive part of our upbringing and memories. When everything else fails, just smile and sing. It was my goto for everything… keep on swimming...

Your biggest musical influences or idols?

I don’t necessarily have any idols or anyone I looked up to. There is one person who introduced me to Worship music, and that was Michael W Smith in the US; I got to meet him and stayed at his family home in Franklin, Tennessee.

Your most memorable moment as a singer?

There are so many…. It’s been 20 years since my debut album was released, so I am “Oom Bob” now [laughs], but ja, performing the national anthem for the Springboks a few times, meeting Nelson Mandela, winning a SAMA (South African Music Award) for my album Net Vir Jou – all my own songs, nogal

And the most challenging aspects?

Being away from home for too long. It’s a big sacrifice in the industry, but hey – I chose it. I miss my kids and need them close to me, but I have to provide, and that means travelling a lot.

What drew you to acting?

Ah, I love acting. Guess it’s the fact that you can put on a mask and play someone else… say stuff you will never say in real life... Get to understand other people and how they view things… I love the rush I get from it. I could do that all year round.

What are your goals for the next year or so in music?

I take it as it comes. I realise that I am not the author of my story. As long as I trust the Main Writer, don’t try and take over, and just keep on walking in my story, I will be fine.

Are there any new styles or projects you want to explore?

I am very open to new styles and projects so I pray that I will have enough chances to explore them.

Do you see the Afrikaans music scene evolving in the next few years?

I think it’s very healthy. I know there are always people saying Afrikaans is dying, but I beg to differ. Afrikaans is alive and doing better than ever. Just look at the music scene! IB

REDEMPTION SONGS

On 3 June 1977, music lovers were introduced to a revolutionary sound that would forever alter the landscape of reggae music: Bob Marley and the Wailers’ iconic album, Exodus. This masterpiece not only showcased Marley’s profound lyrical artistry, but also embodied the spirit of a generation yearning for change, peace, and unity. Exodus remains a sonic tapestry woven with themes of love, resilience, and social consciousness. In 1999, Time magazine dubbed it the best album of the 20th century, cementing its status as a pivotal work in musical history. We desperately need those songs now.

KNOW YOUR JUNE MUSIC HISTORY!

NOT SO POSH, HEY!

In 2002, Virgin Records announced the termination of its contract with Victoria Beckham, former Spice Girl turned solo artist. The decision came after Beckham’s highly anticipated debut solo album, which set the label back over $5 million, failed to resonate with fans and sold a mere 50 000 copies. Posh’s foray into the solo scene was marked by expectations that perhaps outweighed her musical talent. Fortunately, she later made an even greater mark with her Victoria Beckham fashion label.

B*@$H BETTER HAVE MY MONEY

In June 2019, Rihanna was officially named the richest female musician in the world by Forbes magazine. With an estimated fortune, then, of $600 million, the Barbadian singer surpassed peers like Madonna, Celine Dion, and Beyoncé. Her wealth was primarily attributed to her music and her groundbreaking beauty empire. The 2017 launch of her Fenty Beauty line revolutionised the cosmetics industry, raking in a staggering $100 million within its first 40 days, a testament to the fierce loyalty of her fanbase and the brand’s commitment to inclusivity across all skin tones.

ON THE CHARTS

While this particular seasonal shift often brings with it an inclination to hibernate and be still, our selection of songs is guaranteed to put pep in your step, soothe your weary soul, and maybe even evoke a cherished memory. We are also celebrating Father’s Day, so we naturally had to add a song (or two) for the dads.

A NEW WHEY TO ENJOY YOUR COFFEE

Jean-Marc Johannes: GRINDING THROUGH LIFE!

JEAN-MARC JOHANNES IS A PHENOMENON IN SKATEBOARDING. HE HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF THE HIGHEST-ACHIEVING INTERNATIONAL SKATEBOARDERS AND HOLDS MULTIPLE WORLD RECORDS. JOHANNES SHARES HIS JOURNEY FROM THE SKATE PARK TO THE WORLD STAGE WITH INBOUND SA.

How did you first get into skateboarding?

I remember just finishing a day at school, heading out the gates, and watching a group of skaters from my school use their boards to skate home. I gravitated towards it immediately. As I became more comfortable on my board, I began to compete without knowing exactly what that meant in terms of skateboarding, and when I was 10 years old, I won my first contest. This was the exact moment that I felt I wanted to pursue it further.

Who are your biggest influences or role models in skateboarding or sports in general?

My biggest influences are Tony Hawk, Paul Rodriguez, Nyjah Huston, Lionel Messi, Kobe Bryant and Rory McIlroy.

What were your biggest skateboarding challenges?

Even though skateboarding is physically challenging, and putting yourself through the process of progression can be very difficult, the most challenging part, personally, was continuing to believe that my dreams were possible, even when I was told otherwise.

Tell us about the Guinness World Records you hold…

I hold records for nollie and Fakie heelflips and consecutive ollies. The nollie heelflip will always be a memorable one, This was the first record I thought about breaking when the inspiration to break a world record sparked, years after reading the book for the first time.

Any advice for aspiring skateboarders?

Even if it gets difficult and feels impossible to progress, just know that this is part of the process of growth, and it is so important to push through and believe in ourselves, because every chapter of growth holds lessons we won’t learn anywhere else.

What’s your next goal in skateboarding – or beyond?

My goal is to continue to compete in international events and try to accomplish my dream of a podium in World Cup skateboarding, completing my second academic qualification in a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Cornerstone University, and continuing to live a great life with so many beautiful moments and memories with my wife, Roxanne.

What’s your favourite trick, and why?

Hardflip! It’s one of the tricks that gives you the best feeling, but it was difficult for me to learn so I have those memories about it. But those very memories make doing them now so enjoyable, because I found it so difficult then.

If you could skate anywhere in the world, where would it be?

It would be Barcelona; there is so much history there. I took a lot of motivation from skateboarding videos from there , and it would be a dream come true to compete in that city. IB

Experts are freely labelling him a ‘genius’ - a term usually reserved for greats like Messi, Ronaldo and Zidane. Will Yamal join the beautiful game’s elites and, like Messi, do things on the field no one before him had ever done? Time will tell. But he seems to have all the right stuff.

MOVE OVER BANKSY:

MARS IS HERE

RENOWNED FOR HIS EXPLOSIVE AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING MURALS, GRAFFITI ARTIST MARS HAS TRANSFORMED THE JOZI LANDSCAPE INTO A KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLOURS AND SOCIAL COMMENTARY.

His art can be seen on the walls of buildings, motor passes and, intriguingly, even forgotten lots, each piece breathing life and character into its surrounds. But who is Mars, exactly, and what inspires his unmistakable style?

Origin story

Mars’s journey as an artist began with a passion for self-expression in his formative years.

“I first encountered graffiti art as a teenager; it was visible along many of the roads I used to drive to school on,” he says. I saw the bright colours and the cool characters and illustrations. I didn’t know why it was there or what it was, but I knew that I wanted to

find out. I eventually met some older kids who were doing it, and they introduced me to the art form.”

The Heart of His Art

“The graffiti movement was all I was interested in at the time; nothing unrelated to graffiti was on my radar, and I was obsessed. Local artists who were prominent at the time, and an inspiration to me, were Tapz, Rasty, Jesk and Fuse,” he says.

Each of Mars’s murals is a piece of art, but they also serve as a momentary escape from the daily grind - an invitation for viewers to smile and reconnect with their sense of wonder. “My style is rooted in traditional graffiti, so all my work is done with spray paint. I often explore typography and style writing with my alias, Mars.

“I do like exploring faces and characters too, but overall, I love learning new things and pushing myself, which is what has kept my art interesting for me for 20 years.”

When he’s doing a commission or a portrait, there’s less freestyling involved, says Mars. “I would plan it out more. Choose the colours beforehand and have the design ready to be implemented as is.

“I use spray paint almost always, and for large areas I would use acrylic, but I love the spray-can painting – a large-scale piece with spray paint is a full-body movement; it’s very physical and fast.”

The Future of Graffiti Art in South Africa

With the establishment of his company, Kudos Creative, Mars is committed to pushing the boundaries of graffiti art in South Africa.

“Kudos Creative was created for the love of painting,” he says. “I wanted to paint for a living,

and to do that, I needed a registered company. Since its inception 10 years ago, I’ve done hundreds of commissions with loads of different artists and many businesses and individuals. I’m blessed to be able to do what I love for a living.“

Mars further envisions a future where street art is not only celebrated, but also integrated into urban development. “I think culturally, South Africa has a lot to offer. We come from a very rich and diverse history, so there’s a lot for artists to use as inspiration. We also have a lot of issues that need addressing. I think graffiti and street art can be used to shed light on those and educate people.”

A Lasting Impression

Mars is more than just an artist; he’s a storyteller whose canvas is the city itself. “The culture will continue to thrive,” he says. “There are loads of people painting, with younger artists coming up and doing their thing.” IB

If your followers were to vote you “Most Likely To…”, what would it be?

I would think Media Personality Of The Year, as I show various aspects of my life in my content and always show up in my authentic skin – being relatable, lovable and approachable.

What’s your “unexpected flex” as a content creator? (For example, editing on your phone with zero apps.)

I haven’t thought about it, but perhaps being camera-ready all the time, and my ability to produce on-the-spot creative content.

What’s the best piece of advice another content creator has given you?

“Be yourself and show relatability in your content.” This allows your followers to know who you are. It creates that follower loyalty – because they’ll know what they can expect from you.

What’s a “green flag” for a great brand partnership?

There’s nothing better than a brand partnership sticking to their commitments and showing up to what you both agreed on.

Smaakmaker van die jaar, because I strongly believe that I changed thousands of lives with my videos.

What’s your “unexpected flex” as a content creator? (For example, editing on your phone with zero apps.)

Not striving for perfection. I embrace myself for who and what I am. And the cherry on the cake is that I don’t use filters to cover my looks – I love myself unconditionally.

What’s the best piece of advice another content creator has given you?

I don’t have friends in the “Influencer circle”, so I didn’t get any advice from anyone. I paved and navigated this way all by myself. It’s not that I’m antisocial, it’s just that I like the solitude and being in my own private bubble. Peace is a huge luxury these days…

What’s a “green flag” for a great brand partnership?

I would say... clear expectations. As a child, I’d always told my mother that one day I’d be “Triano”; I didn’t quite know what I’d be known for, but I believed every day that my name would be my brand. So yes – clear expectations are very important, because life comes with its ups and downs, and if you lose your clarity, you’ll fail.

“Find what works for you and stick to that.” The right brands will notice your hard work and perseverance.

Ohhh, my unexpected flex? I have mastered a way of capitalising on my authenticity. It may feel debilitating to some, but I find my power lies in my unwavering vulnerability.

What’s the best piece of advice another content creator has given you?

“If a brand accepts your first offer, you are charging too little.”

What’s a “green flag” for a great brand partnership?

When they hold space for your creativity... I understand that in 2025 we are trying to follow trends and all that nonsense, but we need to remember that we should be catering to the followers we have, not the ones we don’t. Growth comes from consistency and an honest voice; POV, not just from creating trends. So when a brand allows you to have fun and be yourself, I feel like the campaign BANGS for everyone!

ITips for healthy winter skin

THE SKINIMALIST WAY

EVER NOTICED HOW YOUR SKIN DOES A 180 WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS CHILLY? WINTER CAN BE HARSH, STRIPPING MOISTURE AND LEAVING SKIN DRY, FLAKY AND IRRITATED. AS TEMPERATURES DROP AND INDOOR HEATING KICKS IN, A MINIMALIST YET EFFECTIVE SKINCARE REGIMEN CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

nstead of layering multiple products, the skinimalist approach focuses on fewer though high-quality essentials that deliver maximum hydration and protection. The key? Deep nourishment, barrier support, and long-lasting moisture, all without a complicated routine. Here are five winter-proof skincare tips to keep your skin healthy, hydrated and glowing.

1. Hydrate with versatile ingredients

Winter air is dry, meaning your skin loses moisture faster. Instead of layering multiple hydrating products, go for a rich, but lightweight lotion. Look for ingredients like Pure Hyaluron, which helps retain moisture and keep skin hydrated.

2. Protect your skin barrier with simplicity

Cold air and indoor heating can weaken the skin’s protective barrier, leading to irritation. Overcomplicating your routine with too many products can sometimes do more harm than good. A single, deeply nourishing moisturiser with barrier-supporting ingredients, such as natural oils and ceramides, helps keep skin resilient and comfortable.

3. Exfoliate smartly, not excessively

Over-exfoliating in winter can strip away essential oils, leaving skin vulnerable to dryness. Stick to a gentle exfoliation routine – no more than once or twice a week – to remove dead skin cells without compromising hydration. Follow up with a moisturiser that absorbs quickly to replenish lost moisture and keep skin feeling soft.

4. Lock in hydration with deep nourishment

Choose a one-step solution that nourishes, protects, and locks in hydration for longer. A

well-formulated moisturiser with a powerful combination of Almond Oil and Deep Moisture Serum helps seal in moisture, keeping skin soft and hydrated throughout the day.

5. Support your skin with the right environment

Indoor heating makes the air drier, which depletes your skin’s moisture. One simple trick? Use a humidifier to maintain air moisture levels. Pairing this with a hydration-focused skincare routine will help counteract winter dryness and keep skin comfortable.

Less is more – your skin will thank you. Try products like the NIVEA Rich Nourishing Body Lotion. Formulated with 100% Pure Hyaluron Deep Moisture Serum and Vitamin E, it provides up to 72 hours of hydration, offering long-lasting care without the need for extra products. IB

Hair Rehab

5 TIPS TO REVITALISE YOUR HAIR

1. Invest in good hair products

Whether it’s a hair wax, shampoo, conditioner, or mousse, a good hair product can make the difference between a good hair day and a bad, whether you have long tresses, dreads, weaves or a pixie cut. Ask your hairdresser for advice on the right product for you!

2. Use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair

Know your hair. What’s your hair type? Hair is broadly categorised into four types, straight, wavy, curly and coily. Ask yourself: which shampoo and conditioner is best for it? Which hair brand or product is best suited to it? How does your hair react to certain conditions? All are important.

3. Deep condition your hair weekly

Most people don’t believe in conditioning their hair weekly, but doing it weekly is important, especially if you have dry, damaged and frizzy hair. The conditioning adds moisture and helps detangle the hair, adding softness and shine.

4. Eat your proteins; eat a balanced diet

A good balanced meal equals good hair. Make sure you eat foods high in protein, like eggs, nuts, Greek yoghurt, and legumes like lentils and beans, etc. According to healthline.com, a diet lacking in the necessary nutrients can lead to hair loss, including deficiencies in vitamins B12 and D-Biotin, riboflavin and iron.

5. Massage your scalp

Massaging your scalp is vital, helping with

blood circulation and stimulating hair growth. According to uklash.com, there has been extensive research into scalp massages and how they can affect hair growth. One 2016 study conducted by The National Library of Medicine found that after receiving daily scalp massages for six months, 68% of participants experienced thicker hair growth. IB

FOR MEN WINTER GROOMING

AS THE TEMPERATURES DROP, THE SKINCARE REGIMEN FOR MEN TAKES A MORE MINDFUL, PROTECTIVE TURN, WITH A STRONG FOCUS ON THE BASICS: MOISTURE REPLENISHING, AND SUBTLE FRAGRANCE. HERE ARE MY TOP GROOMING TIPS TO HELP YOU LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST THROUGHOUT THE WINTER MONTHS.

1. Hydration is a non-negotiable

Cold weather strips moisture from the skin, so hydrating with a rich lotion or crème is your first line of defence. Clere For Men’s crèmes are designed to deeply nourish.

2. Simplify your routine

Men generally want results without the fuss. A good cleanser, a hydrating lotion, and a solid shower gel is all you need – it’s about being consistent, not complicated. And…

3. Don’t skip the rest of the body

Your elbows, knees, and hands need care, especially in winter, when dryness is more noticeable.

4. Choose your fragrance wisely

Your scent says a lot about you. You might have a signature fragrance that you prefer, but try and keep up with the trends, too. Warm, woody notes are where it’s at, this season, and Clere For Men’s fragrance ranges add that subtle, yet powerful masculine edge.

5. Feel good, look good!

Always remember: self-care is vital. When you take the time to look after yourself, you carry that confidence into every part of your day. IB

BAM!

LUXURY FASHION BRAND THE BAM COLLECTIVE RECENTLY GRACED SA FASHION WEEK WITH THEIR LATEST DESIGNS, BREAKING ALL FASHION NORMS, AS USUAL, AND REMAINING TRUE TO THEIR CLASSIC SIGNATURE OF “ILLUSORY DYNAMISM AND MOVEMENT”. WE CAUGHT UP WITH CO-FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR, JACQUES BAM.

What drives your design process?

It’s vital that we spark confidence and joy with the clothes we make. We aim to celebrate individuality and create garments that are unapologetically expressive.

I love that! How does your design aesthetic echo the philosophy of your brand?

We always aim to keep our designs bold, playful and experimental, while still ensuring that our clients are able to wear it. In this way, each garment allows individual clients to incorporate it into their closet, blending their personal style with the signature BAM exuberance.

You can’t go wrong with personal style. Are you enjoying the collaborative culture at The Bam Collective?

Most of fashion is a collaborative effort. All our clothes are made in-studio, with our team. And each member plays a vital role, which is why we call ourselves The BAM Collective. Every season we collaborate closely with our muse and model, Constance More, who brings our clothes to life in all of our photoshoots. We also work closely with the SA Fashion Week team each season to make our couture shine on the runway.

How have you identified your niche?

It’s important for small brands like ourselves to identify our niche and to tailor everything we do around it. Through our clothes, photoshoots, website design, and everything in-between, we always try to speak to our specific clients, identified by name. I believe this personal touch is what really shapes our brand and its future.

What was the turning point that took your brand to the next level?

Our fashion has been featured at every SA Fashion Week since 2019. This platform has really been instrumental to our growth over the past six years; we were able to build a robust community of supporters around our brand. We have also shown internationally –in Paris, Milan, Dubai and Mozambique.

That’s massive. What’s your approach when you show up as The Bam Collective?

Our approach is to create our designs unapologetically, and in our unique way. I believe most people can resonate with this and see that confidence reflected in our work. Most of our clients possess a similar sense of confidence, and our clothes act as a great conduit for them to express this. IB

Winter workouts!

HOW TO STAY ACTIVE AND MOTIVATED WHEN IT’S CHILLY OUTSIDE…

Ah, winter. The season of cosy jumpers, hot cuppas, and the eternal struggle between staying in bed and braving the cold outdoors for a workout. If you find your motivation hibernating during the colder months, you’re not alone. But fear not! Here are some of my favourite fun fitness activities and tips that will keep you moving and grooving all winter long.

Resistance training

There’s something invigorating about layering up in your favourite hoodie and beanie (yes, the outfit matters!), heading to the gym, and diving into a resistance training session. The cold air outside makes the warmth you generate inside feel even more satisfying. Plus, building muscle not only keeps you warm, but also boosts your metabolism, helping you stay energised during those shorter days.

Step it up, indoors or out

Whether it’s hopping on the stepper at the gym or going for a brisk jog outside with a friend, cardio is a fantastic way to get your heart pumping and body moving, naturally heating up the body. The key is to discover what you enjoy. Maybe it’s dancing around your living room to your favourite tunes, or joining a virtual Zumba class. The options are endless, and the endorphin rush is worth it.

Splash it up!

Swimming isn’t just a summer activity. Indoor pools offer a warm escape from the cold, providing a full-body workout that’s easy on the joints. Plus, the rhythmic nature of swimming can be meditative, helping to reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Don’t forget your cosy towel and a warm cup of coffee at your smoothie bar after!

Momentum is key!

Sometimes the thought of leaving the house in the cold is just too much. Enter home workouts. With countless online classes and apps available, you can find a routine that suits your style and schedule. Whether it’s yoga, Pilates, or a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session, working out at home eliminates the commute and the excuses.

Tips and tricks

Staying active during winter doesn’t have to be a chore or feel dreadful. Here are some tips to keep your motivation levels high:

Set realistic goals: Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on consistency. Set yourself up for 20 minutes of movement a day or trying at least one new class each week, whether that’s spinning, yoga or Pilates.

Find a workout buddy: Having someone to exercise with can make sessions more enjoyable and will help hold you accountable.

Dress the part: Investing in comfortable and stylish workout gear like fleece, wool or thermal knit, can

boost your confidence and make you feel more excited to exercise during winter.

Reward yourself: After a workout, treat yourself occasionally to something you enjoy, like a warm bath, your favourite healthy snack, or even a hot latte.

Mix it up: Trying new activities can keep things fresh and prevent boredom. Maybe it’s a dance class one day and a strength session the next.

Remember, the goal is to keep moving and have fun. Winter might be cold, but your workouts can keep you warm, energised and in glowing health. So layer up, find what you love, and let the endorphins flow! IB

Rest, reflect, rejuvenate

AS WINTER WRAPS THE WORLD IN QUIET, IT’S TIME TO RETHINK OUR APPROACH. GIDEON LE ROUX, A TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE EXPERT, SHARES HOW EMBRACING THE SEASON’S STILLNESS CAN NOURISH OUR BODIES AND MINDS AND SET US UP FOR A VIBRANT YEAR AHEAD.

Winter often gets a bad rap – cold mornings, dark evenings, and a general desire to hibernate. But what if we looked at it differently? “Winter is nature’s way of inviting us to slow down,” says Gideon le Roux, an internationally trained practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). “It’s not about doing less for the sake of laziness. It’s about aligning with the season’s energy to support long-term vitality.”

Nourish your energy reserves

According to TCM, winter is associated with the kidney system, considered the source of our energy reserves. “This is the time to nourish, rest, and quietly build strength from within,” explains

Le Roux. That means warm broths, slow-cooked meals, and allowing ourselves to sleep a little longer. “Digestion is central to immunity in TCM, so eating foods that are warming and easy to digest helps keep our defences strong.”

Move, but mindfully

Le Roux encourages gentle, intentional movement through practices like Tai Qi and QiGong, martial arts he’s been teaching for over two decades. “These practices help build internal energy without overexerting. They’re calming to the nervous system and supportive for both body and mind.”

Restore, don’t stimulate

Winter is also prime time for self-care. “This season is about restoration, not stimulation,” Le Roux says. Think meditation, breathwork, or journalling to process the year and prepare for the one ahead. “Creating stillness in your day, even five minutes of quiet with a warm cup of tea, can shift your whole mindset.”

He also recommends seasonal acupuncture as a gentle but powerful tune-up. “Just one treatment tailored to the winter season can help the body transition more smoothly, especially supporting the kidney energy, the root of vitality in TCM.”

Sow the seeds of spring

Le Roux’s biggest tip for embracing winter? Don’t fight it. “We’re not meant to bloom all year round. Winter is the perfect time to reflect, restore, and plant seeds for what’s next.”

So go ahead! Wrap up, slow down, and enjoy the pause. Your springtime self will thank you. IB

The vitamin D plan

SHINE ON, SA! DON’T LET THE WINTER BLUES GET YOU DOWN. BOOST YOUR VITAMIN D LEVELS AND KICK THE SNIFFLES TO THE CURB!

When the days get shorter, the blankets come out, and the sun seems to vanish by 5pm, it’s not just your mood that can take a knock – your vitamin D levels might be dipping too. And trust us, that matters more than you might think.

“Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that our bodies naturally produce when exposed to sunlight,” explains Dr P. Mbele, EM consultant at Busamed Private Hospital Group. “It’s essential for bone health, but also plays a role in supporting a healthy immune system.” That means fewer sniffles, and a better chance of dodging the flu this season.

Winter in South Africa doesn’t often bring snow (thankfully), but it does bring shorter, colder days, and that can lead to insufficient sunlight exposure, which is how most of us get our Vit. D. According to Dr Mbele, “Vitamin D is especially important during the winter months, which is peak time for developing colds and flu.” It can even help regulate mood and lower the risk of depression – yes, please to a natural mood-booster.

The symptoms of deficiency are sneaky: tiredness, sore muscles, and weak bones. And some groups are more at risk – the elderly, those who spend lots of time indoors, people with darker skin, and anyone with conditions that affect fat absorption.

So what can you do? Dr Mbele recommends spending a bit more time outdoors – “between five and 30 minutes, a few times a week, with some skin exposed to the sun (arms, hands, face, legs).” Don’t ditch your sunscreen, though – it reduces vitamin D production but doesn’t block it entirely.

Top up with vitamin D-rich foods like salmon, sardines, egg yolks and mushrooms, or look for fortified cereals and milk. And if you’re really battling? “Vitamin D supplements are a great option,” says Dr Mbele. “Most are 500IU or 1000IU, and the daily recommendation is about 600IU.”

This winter, don’t just chase the sun – make sure you’re soaking up enough of it too. Your bones, your immune system will thank you. IB

Your ultimate immunity partner

Metagenics ImmuDefence is a comprehensive, all-in-one immune support formula designed to help maintain a strong and balanced immune response. Featuring a powerful combination of essential vitamins and minerals, it works synergistically to support overall immune function, reduce oxidative stress, and promote wellness.

Food for defence

BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY WITH DELICIOUS FOOD! LEARN HOW SIMPLE SWAPS AND TASTY TWEAKS CAN KEEP YOU FEELING FABULOUS. SAY GOODBYE TO SNIFFLES AND HELLO TO A HEALTHIER, HAPPIER YOU!

We all want a strong immune system, but we don’t always know where to start. According to registered dietician Henriette Joubert from The Nutrition House, the good news is you can eat your way to better immunity.

“Vitamins A, B12, C, D, E, K and folate, as well as minerals like zinc, selenium and magnesium, all play a role in immune function,” she says. “But if I had to highlight just a few, vitamin C and E stand out as powerful antioxidants.” Vitamin C, in particular, supports both adaptive and innate immunity, and even improves phagocytic function – essentially helping your body ‘gobble up’ invaders.

And then there’s zinc. “Zinc and selenium have been shown to improve immune cell function,” says Henriette. “Zinc is also key for cell repair and supports immunity in your gut, skin and respiratory system.”

So, how do you get these nutrients in without turning your kitchen into a science lab? Start with simple, delicious meals, she says.

Soup it up

Henriette recommends a warm, comforting bowl of Pumpkin and Ginger Soup, packed

with immune-supporting vitamins A, E, and C, and selenium. “Fresh ginger contains gingerol, which helps reduce inflammation and relieve flu symptoms,” she says. Add in extra veggies like carrots and spinach for an antioxidant boost.

Salad, but make it vibrant

Another star dish packed with immune-boosting foods is Henriette’s own Roasted Vegetable and Feta Salad with Pomegranate; it’s a rainbow of goodness. Simply roast pumpkin and beetroot. Toss with rocket, crumble over feta, and drizzle with dressing. “Sprinkle with Brazil nuts for selenium, pumpkin seeds for zinc, and pomegranate for antioxidants,” she suggests.

Stir-fry for strength

Henriette also recommends a colourful veggie stir-fry loaded with flavour and nutrients. “The phrase ‘eat the rainbow’ applies here – the more colourful, the better the range of phytonutrients,” she says. Add garlic, ginger and your favourite protein, then finish with a splash of soy sauce and a teaspoon of honey.

Finally, don’t forget lifestyle basics: drink water (aim for one glass per 10kg of body weight), manage stress, sleep well and exercise. Says Henriette: “If your stress is high and sleep poor, your immune system will struggle – no matter how much broccoli you eat.” IB

Here comes the Blok

DISCOVER BLOK’S VISION FOR URBAN LIVING IN CAPE TOWN. WITH A DECADE OF EXPERIENCE, BLOK’S THOUGHTFUL DESIGNS REDEFINE NEIGHBOURHOODS, FOSTERING COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION.

“As Blok inches closer to a decade of building urban apartments that redefine urban living in Cape Town, we’re reflecting on the values that have driven our success and helped shape the future of urban apartment living through thoughtful design,” says Jacques van Embden, CEO of Blok.

Designing for urban living

Blok’s approach to apartment design is built on adaptability and efficiency – paying close attention to the evolving needs of today’s urban dwellers. Blok obsesses over functional design, giving homeowners the flexibility to customise and rearrange their living spaces as needed. Their buildings include shared working spaces, meeting rooms and areas to unwind, be that a gym

workout or a lounger next to the pool – indicative of the changing nature of the way we live and thrive.

Thoughtful design allows for integrated storage solutions and multifunctional furniture, such as retractable desks or dining tables, enabling even the most compact apartment to meet functional lifestyle needs without compromising comfort.

Blok’s buildings comprise different apartment types, catering to the needs of a wide range of homeowners, providing options from compact micro apartments to double-storey penthouse apartments. Enabling owners to live the way they want is a phrase often heard within the walls of the Blok office.

Urban design that extends beyond the front door

Embracing urban living, Blok thinks beyond the apartment. Their building designs and public space initiatives are guided by a commitment to fostering community and neighbourhood improvement. Blok supports spaces designed to encourage social interaction, connection and engagement.

A Blok development is crafted to enhance both urban living experiences and the surrounding neighbourhood. From initial project planning to “Honey, you’re home”, every aspect of their buildings is designed with the homeowner’s experience in mind. This philosophy extends

beyond a homeowner’s private space. TENONV, located in Cape Town’s city centre, will feature a beautiful, secure pedestrian thoroughfare that connects the Company’s Gardens to Long Street, promoting accessibility, human connection and public space utilisation – ideally creating a new, must-see landmark in the city.

Fostering stronger communities

Not satisfied with creating standout structures, Blok invests in the neighbourhoods it develops. Funding Pristine Earth Collective’s year-round stormwater drain cleaning operations and the Cobra Mountain Security team are just two ways it adds value. Initiatives like murals, a family park rehabilitation, and an annual beach clean demonstrate Blok’s commitment to doing more than building homes. Additionally, it has opened a pop-up art gallery to showcase local artists, offering free exhibition and attendance opportunities.

Blok’s latest developments include commercial spaces occupied by owner-run businesses, fostering tangible economic growth, customer loyalty, and familiarity within the neighbourhood. Grab a delicious coffee or their renowned “birthday cake” from Norfolk Deli at SIXONN (6 Norfolk Road), indulge in a sweet treat on a swing from Crumbs & Cream at ONE26ONM (126 Main Road, Sea Point), or work off those calories at Horizen Gym. New and exciting businesses, dubbed “neighbourhood heroes” by Blok, will soon join a soul-filling yoga studio at EIGHTY2ONM (82 Main Road, Sea Point), and local restaurant legends will return to THREE43ONB, which opened just last month – though our lips are sealed on who they are.

“Creating spaces, neighbourhoods, and communities that inspire is what truly keeps us driven. Our commitment to quality, creativity, and authenticity will remain at the core of everything we do,” says Van Embden.

Over the last 10 years, Blok has launched 19 developments – 15 completed buildings and four under construction, creating over 1 000 homes. This year Blok celebrates 10 years and launches their 20th development.

A new neighbourhood for Blok

Introducing ONEONR located in a new neighbourhood, rich in history – De Waterkant. Be a part of history in the making with Blok. With progressive design that honours the charm of the past and innovative spaces that offer a new way of living.

Designed with a deep respect for its surroundings, ONEONR will reinterpret De Waterkant’s architectural charm using Blok’s signature contemporary lens. Preserving heritage elements ensures the development integrates seamlessly with its historic setting while offering residents sweeping views of Table Mountain, the city skyline, and the Atlantic Ocean. “In a neighbourhood known for breaking down walls, there are some we want to preserve,” says Blok’s head of marketing, Troy Squires.

“ONEONR is a love letter to De Waterkant’s past and its future,” says Van Embden, CEO of Blok. “Our intention was to create something that not only honours the area’s rich heritage but also introduces a progressive vision for urban living in Cape Town.”

Featuring a mix of thoughtfully-designed Studio, One-Bedroom, and Two-Bedroom apartments as well as highly coveted Rowhouses and Penthouses, ONEONR invites residents to experience urban living where home is an extension of the vibrant streets.

A cobblestone’s throw away from the city centre, ONEONR’s amenities include a proposed community-centred green space, a ground-floor

café and shops, 24-hour security, a gorgeous pool deck and pet-friendly homes. With De Waterkant’s ongoing popularity as a “15-minute city” destination, ONEONR offers an unmatched opportunity to become part of a neighbourhood that continues to define Cape Town’s cultural pulse.

What’s next for Blok?

With multiple building completions taking place this year, Blok’s progressive nature and ambition to shape the future of urban living through thoughtful design will see them venture into new neighbourhoods of Cape Town. “Being able to positively influence precincts within arguably the world’s best city is something that drives everyone at Blok. A shared pride for the city we get to call home is a hugely motivating force within the business”, says Squires. “I still pinch myself when I pass a Blok building on my way for a run on the mountain. It’s extraordinary that we get to add to the fabric and play a part in the history of Cape Town.”

Stay tuned as Blok continues to lead the conversation on shaping the future of urban apartment living through thoughtful design and looks to celebrate an incredible milestone closer to the middle of the year.

Ford Puma ST-Vignale

HELLO! IT’S ME AGAIN, YOUR FRIENDLY INBOUND SA DRIVER, TESTING AND REVIEWING SOME OF THE NEW (OR OLD) VEHICLES THAT YOU LOVE TO LOVE. ALLOW ME TO TAKE YOU ON A JOURNEY OF INNOVATION AND DESIGN.

Over the past week I’ve been chasing more than just sunsets – I’ve also been enchanted by the breathtaking sunrises that punctuate our journey. Let me introduce you to my latest travel companion: the stunning 2023 Ford Puma ST-Vignale, which I’ve affectionately nicknamed “Pam”.

The body of a goddess From the moment you lay eyes on Pam, her striking Grey Matter colour hypnotises you. This isn’t just a car – it’s an experience waiting to unfold.

The design of the Puma ST-Vignale seamlessly blends a sporty aesthetic with polished sophistication, making it both visually appealing and practical. With its sleek lines and eye-catching grille, it’s hard not to fall in love at first sight.

But Pam isn’t all good looks! Once you slip into the driver’s seat, you’ll discover a world of comfort and cutting-edge technology.

Let’s take a look inside

The ST-Vignale embodies sophistication with a partial leather interior trimmed in grey stitching. Comfort is paramount, and notable interior features such as an auto-dimming rearview mirror and an impressive 12.3” digital instrument cluster complement its allure.

Fun fact: Pam goes the extra mile, with massage seats for the driver and front passenger, no tension allowed!

Second base?

With a central 8” touchscreen boasting Ford’s Sync 3 technology, connectivity is seamless, thanks, too, to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,

which allow drivers to stay linked to their digital worlds. On the sound front, a sophisticated 10-speaker B&O audio system amplifies driving pleasure when you’re navigating tight city streets on a workday, or taking a relaxed drive along coastal roads on the weekend.

While the cabin keeps a relatively quiet atmosphere even on windy days, there is one one minor drawback: rear passenger legroom can feel somewhat restricted, making it less suited for family trips. Still, safety features abound, with six airbags, hill launch assist, lane-keeping aid, pre-collision assist, and auto high beam assist all standard, ensuring that you’re well-protected on the road.

The spacious interior offers plush leather seats and an intuitive infotainment system that keeps you connected. Plus, the advanced safety features provide peace of mind, allowing you to focus on the joy of driving.

Get your hands dirty

Under the hood, Pam is ready to roar! The Puma ST-Vignale boasts a 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, and packs a punch with its

responsive engine, offering thrilling performance that makes every turn feel exhilarating. Handling is exceptional, making it easy to weave through traffic with finesse and agility.

Final word!

Throughout this week-long escapade, the Ford Puma ST-Line offered a harmoniously blended

experience of comfort, technology, and driving pleasure. Despite its higher price point, it’s hard not to be charmed by the many joys Pam brings to the table. For those willing to invest, the Puma ST-Vignale represents a compelling option, poised to turn every trip into an adventure. So, buckle up, and let’s explore the world one sunrise at a time! IB

WINTER IN THE CAPE WINELANDS

WHILE PICNICKING, DINING ALFRESCO OR GOING FOR A SCENIC STROLL ON A WINE FARM IN THE GLORIOUS SUMMER SUNSHINE HOLDS OODLES OF CHARM, THE CAPE WINELANDS STILL HAVE MUCH TO OFFER VISITORS IN THE WINTER.

When peak tourist season is over in the Cape, here are some of the many experiences you can enjoy in the colder months

Brunch at the Lievland Café

Lievland Vineyards is a historic estate with a storied past that includes a Latvian baroness and a pair of horses who adopted a springbok. If you’re looking for comfort food to warm you from the inside out, the Lievland Café, located here, offers an incredibly satisfying three-course Lievlove

Brunch experience. This begins with a sharing platter for the table consisting of charcuterie, cheese and other tasty bites, followed by a choice of hot mains, such as the dreamy Brioche French Toast with mascarpone and apple-pear compote, among other options. A trio of dessert pastries completes the meal. This can all be enjoyed in an elegantly decorated space overlooking rolling hills, a lake and grazing ponies.

Lunch with a view, at Boschendal Boschendal, located between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, is famous for its picnics on those

beautiful green lawns in the shade of gorgeous oak trees. Unfortunately, their picnic experiences do pause for July, but they have a number of other dining options available. From the Werf Restaurant in the original cellar of the Manor House to the Deli Restaurant with its farm-style menus and the Farm Shop with its outdoor seating area, Boschendal offers a number of delicious food options in serene settings with stunning views. There are also plenty of activities for the kids at the Tree House, Boschendal’s children’s centre, which also offers an exciting holiday programme of practical edutainment!

Excellent canapé tasting at Ernie Els Wines

Yes, the world-famous golfer is also part-owner of Ernie Els Wines, an impressive wine estate on a scenic mountainside with panoramic views. It is known for its Bordeaux-style blends with Cabernet Sauvignon. On a patio overlooking the view, you can enjoy a Canapé Tasting. The experience includes a generous pour of their current vintage, Ernie Els Signature, paired with a rare roast beef, beetroot tartare, crispy greens and burnt aubergine canapé. This is followed by a beetroot, berry, and black pepper sorbet. The experience concludes with a carefully selected vintage wine from the estate’s Vinotèque. If that doesn’t warm you up, you can also tour Ernie Els’s impressive trophy room or put your putting skills to the test: get a hole-in-one on the small green in front of the terrace, and you can win a bottle of wine!

Experience freedom of choice at De Warenmarkt

In an 18th-century historical courthouse building in the heart of Stellenbosch is De Warenmarkt. This market-like centre hosts a coffee shop, deli, biltong shop, butchery, restaurant, dessert parlour, coworking space, oyster bar and wine shop - all in one! Here, by the warmth of the fireplace, guests can dine on traditional South African dishes paired with some of the finest wines in the region. Alternatively, the Simon Wine Emporium, also located here, showcases 145 wines from 73 members of Stellenbosch Wine Routes; they are carefully selected by a panel of experts and sold to the public at cellar door prices. No shortage of options here!

Enjoy a hearty meal at the Manor Kitchen on Lanzerac Wine Estate

Lanzerac, in the Jonkershoek Valley, is a historical wine estate dating back to 1692. It boasts elegant rooms, stunning views, bars, restaurants, a deli, a tasting venue, a day spa and some other impressive features – all surrounded by lush vineyards and soaring mountains. Under Executive Chef Stephen Fraser, the Manor Kitchen is known for serving hearty meals in the wintertime, complemented by great wine and enjoyed in the warm glow of one of their fireplaces. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can opt for a seven-course set menu that’s perfectly paired with Lanzerac wines. There is also an á la carte menu of reimagined classic dishes on offer.

Get a taste of L’Avenir

L’Avenir is a scenic wine estate that combines South African winemaking with French flair. An elegant tasting room inspired by the French bistro culture is where guests can sample an exceptional lineup of wines that highlight the estate’s dedication to Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. Highlights include the crisp Provenance Chenin Blanc, the delightful Glenrosé (with a detailed protea-inspired imprint in the base of the bottle), and the award-winning Single Block Pinotage. This can be enjoyed with a delicious platter, by the fire, or outdoors, with sweeping views of rolling vineyards, lush lawns and a tranquil lake.

Transport yourself somewhere tropical at Erinvale Spa

If you’re still feeling the winter chill after the above-mentioned suggestions, the best thing would be to go and relax in a sauna. A few months ago, the spa at the Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa was extensively refurbished and reopened. The new thermal suite, consisting of a sauna and a steam room, is sure to warm you up on a chilly day. Alternatively, a spa treatment, such as the Pacific Islands Massage with Coconut & Monoi Massage oils, warm sand pouches and Llomi Llomi movements, will temporarily transport you somewhere tropical.

Work up a sweat while you view the art

While people from other parts of the country would like to believe that it rains non-stop in the Western Cape during the winter, those of us who live here know this is not the case. On the many days when the sun is shining, you can warm your body and soul with a combination of art and exercise — a duo that the Cape Winelands specialises in.

• Go on a bicycle art tour in Stellenbosch with Casa Cervesa, where they’ll show you some of the town’s most significant public art pieces from the saddle.

• Walk the Stellenbosch Art Mile, a 1,6-kilometre route along the Eerste River that’s lined with public art freely accessible to all.

• You can also walk the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. Here, a four-kilometre path meanders through a seven-hectare estate that’s home to over 60 works by the renowned sculptor, all dispersed throughout the beautifully landscaped gardens.

Whatever you decide to do, the colder weather signals a great time of year to explore the Cape Winelands. And, it being the off-season, winter discounts are fairly common!

Tunisia’s timeless charm

Tunisia may be smaller than its North African neighbours, but it packs a powerful cultural punch. The ruins of ancient Carthage tell stories of civilisations past, while the medina of Tunis offers a vibrant, living history of North African life. For Roman history enthusiasts, the El Jem’s amphitheatre, one of the largest in the world, is a jaw-dropping sight. Tunisia also boasts some of the region’s most charming coastal towns. Sidi Bou Said, perched above the Mediterranean, enchants with its blueand-white buildings and artistic vibe. You can visit Matmata to see how people live in traditional cave homes and also recognise it as a real-life setting from the Star Wars universe. (Matmata was used as a filming location for Luke Skywalker’s home on the planet Tatooine in Star Wars: A New Hope!)

Don’t miss: Exploring the countryside’s lesser-known archaeological gems.

Why now is the time...

During the summer months, North Africa is hot – naturally! But the shoulder seasons, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), offer perfect weather – cool and pleasant.

With many European destinations struggling with overtourism, North Africa provides an appealing alternative. These countries boast rich cultures and improved accessibility, with enhanced flight connections and growing tourism infrastructure. For South African travellers, favourable exchange rates make this an affordable luxury. Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia are investing in their travel sectors, balancing modernisation with heritage preservation. Whether wandering through Morocco’s souks, floating down the Nile, or sipping coffee in a Tunisian café overlooking the sea, North Africa promises meaningful and magical experiences.

Ready for the adventure of a lifetime?

From ancient ruins to windswept deserts and coastal escapes, North Africa is calling. Now’s the time to answer its call! IB

SEVILLE:

A CULINARY HOMECOMING

LIFE IN SEVILLE REVOLVES AROUND MEALS; THE CLINKING OF GLASSES, THE SHARED LAUGHTER OVER PLATES OF TAPAS, THE WAY THE CITY SLOWS DOWN AS THE AFTERNOON HEAT SETTLES IN... THERE’S A CERTAIN MAGIC THERE, BUT IT’S THE FOOD THAT TRULY TELLS SEVILLE’S STORY. THE CULINARY TRADITIONS HERE ARE AS CENTRAL TO THE CITY’S IDENTITY AS ITS SUN-DAPPLED STREETS AND ANCIENT MOORISH ARCHITECTURE.

My childhood summers were spent in a little Spanish village. Every year, we’d make the trek from the UK by car, our family of six crossing the channel and winding through France, all for the reward of languid weeks by the sea.

I can still taste the churros: piping hot corrugated sugary dough sticks pulled straight from a greasy paper bag, and dipped into melted chocolate. We’d swirl the hot dough between our teeth, breathing as quickly as we could to cool them

down between bites, each of us desperate to have our fill before another sibling beat us to it.

Churros were Spain to me, then. But it was there, too, that I developed a taste for seafood –from fish braais to a taste for swordfish and my first bite of calamari, a gullible seven-year-old me tricked into it by my brother claiming they were “unbattered onion rings”. Trips to the local supermarket saw us leaving with mountains of cured jamón, the famous Spanish dry-cured ham, while fruit was picked from the backyard of our whitewashed villa. Occasionally we’d drive

into town for dinner and, under Dad’s watchful eye, order food in clumsy Spanish – he spoke it fluently, having spent a few years working in Madrid.

For me, returning to Spain was a culinary homecoming of sorts. After years away, I returned to Seville hoping to rekindle those fond memories.

On my first night, I booked the Seville Tapas Tour by Secret Food Tours – something I hoped would give me the confidence to navigate the tapas scene solo for the remainder of the week. It’s the kind of thing that could easily feel touristy, but didn’t.

After a 6km Lime scooter ride to the meeting spot, I knew I was far from the typical tourist haunts. The guide led us through narrow winding streets, past grand cathedrals and hidden courtyards. We stopped at bars and restaurants that seemed unremarkable from the outside yet inside, held treasures. One spot offered cured tuna and a selection of jamón Iberico, each slice marbled with fat and practically melting on my tongue. Another served a spinach and chickpea stew rich with cumin, a nod to the Arabic influences that still flavour Andalusian cuisine. Piping hot fried cuttlefish bites, doused in lemon and enjoyed straight from a paper cone, were somehow reminiscent of both those early days of trying seafood in Spain and the occasional Friday night fish and chips in the UK.

Feeling ready to brave the food scene alone, I

ventured out. My mornings quickly fell into a comforting rhythm, beginning with a simple breakfast – coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a tostada drizzled with olive oil and topped with a paste made from fresh Andalusian tomatoes. The tomatoes here are like nowhere else’s – vibrant red, bursting with flavour, and sweetened by the intense Andalusian sun. Stuffed with creamy burrata and roasted with a touch of honey, they make a simple but unforgettable lunch.

One morning, craving something sweet, I followed my nose to Doña Carmen Churros. A small, unassuming spot, the smell of frying dough led me right to it. From the very first, meltingly delicious, crunchy bite, I was transported right back to those early childhood days.

As the week unfolded, I discovered the joys of exploring Seville’s food scene at my own pace. Evenings were reserved for tapas-hopping. You start at one bar, perhaps Bodeguita Romero, with a plate of carrillada (braised pork cheeks in red wine) or gooey cheese and ham croquettes. Then on to the next, where you might sample one of the city’s famous octopus dishes, or ensaladilla rusa, a cold potato salad with shrimp or tuna – a staple since the 19th century. By the time you reach your final stop, you have a deeper appreciation for the city’s culinary heritage.

Even as a solo traveller, it was impossible to feel lonely in the evenings. Seville buzzes with the energy of spontaneous friends’ meet-ups, couples sharing a drink and tapas, and the continual

hum of a city that only winds down as the clock approaches midnight. Dining alone immerses you in the experience so you can focus on the flavours and textures that tell the story of Seville.

Forget tapas, lunch is the star of the show here, something to be savoured… slowly. You can enjoy three courses and a drink for around 10-12 euros (R250, at the current exchange rate). And nobody bats an eyelid if you opt for wine or beer on a workday.

After five hours’ touring the Real Alcazar and the cathedral, I was ready for a carb-heavy lunch. For years, I’d seen the famous tortilla de patatas recommended, but I’d dismiss it as a bland mix of potatoes, onion, and eggs in a crustless tart. To my delight, it was perfectly seasoned and utterly delicious. I devoured it in record time. Later, feeling sticky in the stifling Sevillian summer heat, I wandered back to the hotel to shower off the dust of the day. Then, feeling delectably drowsy, drifted off in the glorious Spanish tradition of the siesta, to shake off the food coma.

Artichokes were another ingredient that seemed to appear on every menu. They’re usually served whole, roasted or confit-ed in oil and garlic, with a side of fresh bread. In Seville, artichokes are a nod to the city’s Moorish past, where advanced agricultural techniques allowed these tender, slightly bitter vegetables to thrive. Paired with a heartier tapa, such as pork in mustard sauce, baked butter prawns, or croquettes, artichokes

add a fresh, earthy, and vinegary contrast to the richer dishes.

Later that week, I treated myself to dinner at Restaurante Vela Azahares in Triana, with its modern interiors and a view along the river. I ordered the delectable octopus rice drizzled with kewpie mayo, accompanied by a glass of crisp white wine and the sound of friends catching up after a long workday. It’s the kind of spot that makes you want to linger long after your plate is empty. I lingered, watching the city move around me while enjoying a sense of peace in the solitude. Not quite ready to end my night, I decided to order another favourite: tuna tartare.

The Japanese influence on Seville’s cuisine has historical roots. In the early 20th Century, Japanese fishermen began settling in coastal Spain, bringing with them their culinary traditions. Over time, these influences found its way into Andalusian cuisine, creating a unique fusion that’s now a hallmark of Seville’s modern food scene.

As the week drew to a close, I found myself savouring the last few bites of my final meal in Seville at Restaurante Doña Rufina, washed down with a glass of Tinto de Verano. At 10pm, as the sun set behind the cathedral and the city prepared for another long, lively night, I realised that this trip had been more than a foodie getaway; it was a culinary journey back to a place that, in its own way, had always been home. Welcome to the Sky Office -

VIA STARLINK

THE SEATBELT SIGN IS OFF, YOUR LAPTOP’S OPEN, AND THANKS TO STARLINK AVIATION, YOUR INBOX IS FULLY CONNECTED AT 35 000 FEET. SPACEX’S SATELLITE INTERNET SERVICE IS TURNING PLANE CABINS INTO AIRBORNE OFFICES – AND BUSINESS TRAVEL MIGHT NEVER BE THE SAME.

La unched in late 2022, Starlink Aviation offers high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi via a network of low-Earth orbit satellites. Unlike traditional in-flight connectivity, this service is fast enough to handle everything from Zoom meetings to cloud syncing without a hitch.

Major international carriers – Delta, United, Air France, KLM, Qatar Airways, and Air New Zealand – are already installing or trialling the tech. Even South Africa’s FlySafair is eyeing a rollout, pending regulatory approval.

For business travellers, this could be a game-changer.

“Being connected in the air means fewer nights away from home and landing ready to hit the ground running,” says Mummy Mafojane, GM of FCM South Africa. “It creates efficiency – and savings.”

But Mafojane also raises a cautionary flag. Just because the tools are there, should we use them?

“In-flight time used to offer a rare escape from constant digital demands,” she notes. “We talk about flexibility as progress, but real flexibility also means knowing when you’re allowed to switch off.”

As business travellers become reachable midflight, companies must address wellbeing concerns and rethink travel policies. Long-haul economy doesn’t exactly foster productivity – cramped trays,

elbow wars, and zero privacy don’t set the stage for executive-level output.

“If performance in the air becomes the expectation, then business class isn’t a luxury – it’s infrastructure,” says Mafojane.

FCM outlines five key areas where companies need clarity: expectations around availability, wellbeing boundaries, upgrade criteria, digital etiquette, and data security. Are video calls acceptable mid-flight? Should overnight legs be declared screen-free zones? Is a VPN non-negotiable?

Starlink unlocks a new level of mobility, but it also places a fresh burden on policy makers. Businesses must strike a balance between leveraging connectivity and protecting their teams from burnout and blurred boundaries.

“The tools are powerful,” Mafojane concludes. “But success lies in building policies that support both performance and people.”

As the sky becomes the new office, the smartest companies will be the ones redefining what productive travel really looks like.

Winter insurance strategies FOR YOUR BUSINESS AMID SOUTH AFRICA’S SHIFTING CLIMATE

WITH SOUTH AFRICA FACING INCREASINGLY UNPREDICTABLE WINTERS, NOW IS THE TIME TO CLOSE INSURANCE GAPS, PROTECT YOUR ASSETS, AND GET AHEAD OF CLIMATE-DRIVEN RISKS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.

South African winters are changing. In 2024, the country experienced its deadliest wildfire season on record, with 34 lives lost and almost four million hectares burnt. In the same year, leading insurer Santam paid out over R607 million in weather-related claims in just the first six months of the year — nearly four times the amount paid during the same period in 2023. For business owners, these numbers are more than concerning — they’re a wake-up call.

With winter 2025 setting in, it’s time to re-evaluate how prepared your business really is for climatedriven risks.

1. Reassess your insurance cover

With extreme weather events becoming more

frequent, insurers are tightening up their policies and re-evaluating risk. According to Santam, the number and value of claims linked to adverse weather are climbing rapidly, with higher premiums expected across the board.

Take action: Make sure your cover extends beyond general property insurance. Include region-specific threats such as flooding, hail and fires, and ensure your business interruption policy realistically reflects your exposure to downtime.

2. Prioritise maintenance before the rain hits

Many insurers won’t pay out claims if damage is found to be due to neglected upkeep. With winter rainfall increasing in parts of the country, and urban drainage infrastructure under pressure,

proactive property management is no longer optional.

Take action: Carry out seasonal inspections of roofs, gutters and stormwater drains. Ensure all heating systems and geysers are properly serviced. Back up these efforts with clear maintenance records.

3. Tailor cover to your location

Climate models for 2025 suggest most parts of South Africa are in for a drier-than-normal winter — except for KwaZulu-Natal, which is expected to see above-average rainfall. This variability means that a one-size-fits-all approach to insurance no longer works.

Take action: Adapt your insurance strategy to reflect regional forecasts. Flood-prone areas should prioritise water damage protection, while businesses in high-risk fire zones should bolster their fire and emergency cover.

fire insurance to confirm it includes the full cost of loss, damage and operational downtime.

5. Secure your digital and electrical infrastructure

4. Protect against fires — even in winter

South Africa’s 2024 wildfire season was a grim reminder that fires can hit hard in dry winter months. Mpumalanga recorded the highest number of wildfires nationally, driven by dry conditions and strong winds. Unfortunately, many businesses near open land are still underinsured for fire damage.

Take action: Maintain a buffer zone around your property, clear flammable debris, and ensure fire extinguishing systems are up to code. Revisit your

Winter loadshedding and surging electricity demand often result in sudden power outages and spikes. Insurers have reported a notable rise in claims for damaged equipment — especially in retail and manufacturing sectors reliant on sensitive machinery.

Take action: Invest in surge protectors, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and data backups. Ensure your business equipment is covered for power-related losses, and document your tech assets thoroughly.

6. Close the protection gap

The insurance “protection gap” — the difference between total economic loss and what is actually covered — is growing in South Africa. Many SMEs either underinsure or forego insurance completely, exposing themselves to devastating losses.

Take action: Undertake a risk audit with a broker or advisor. Consider flexible policies designed for small businesses that can scale with you. Being underinsured in 2025 may cost more than being properly prepared.

The climate is shifting. South African winters are no longer just chilly — they’re unpredictable and potentially destructive. With the right insurance strategies in place, you can protect your business, your assets and your peace of mind. IB

LEISURELY LUNCHES

AT THE NELLIE’S FOUNTAIN

AS EXECUTIVE CHEF AT MOUNT NELSON, A BELMOND HOTEL, CHEF LUKE LAWRENCE BARRY IS REDEFINING THE CULINARY LANDSCAPE WITH AN APPROACH TO DINING THAT CELEBRATES THE FUSION OF SOUTH AFRICAN AND MEDITERRANEAN FLAVOURS AND COOKING TECHNIQUES. CHEF BARRY IS BEHIND TWO EXCITING NEW OFFERINGS: THE FOUNTAIN BY PLANET BAR, AND SATURDAY BRAAI.

The Fountain offers a fresh take on Mediterraneaninspired cuisine. How did you incorporate local ingredients and flavours while maintaining the essence of the Med?

In the Med, processed foods are almost nonexistent, so using the freshest ingredients is key, and we’re fortunate enough to have the freshest, highest-quality ingredients available from both land and sea in SA and in Africa. I’m like a kid in a candy store being back home – I truly appreciate and respect our ingredients. We also have an indigenous herb garden and a substantial herb and vegetable garden on the property. Our menu was inspired by the gardens and the fountain. Our GM, Tiago, and I quickly realised that this was the kind of food the space needed. Guests are increasingly health-conscious, so fresh, light dishes with bold flavours are what they’re looking for. The beauty of this concept is that ingredients change with the seasons, which keeps the menu fresh and exciting. The Fountain is a perfect spot for a long, leisurely lunch. We want guests to come at 12pm and before they know it, it’s already 7pm.

The menu includes Wagyu bone marrow and Cape burrata. How do they reflect your culinary philosophy of celebrating local flavours?

It’s not just about me and my culinary philosophy – it’s about meeting our guests’ needs. We chose the Wagyu bone marrow because it’s rich, indulgent, and bursting with flavour. We encourage guests to spread it over freshly baked sourdough, topped with a parsley and pickled onion salad and a citrus-heavy salsa verde. It’s meant to be eaten with your hands. We wanted the experience to be relaxed and inviting. The Cape burrata requires no cooking, allowing the ingredients to shine. It’s made fresh daily, and we paired it with the freshest beef tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, and basil from our own garden. This dish embodies the essence of The Fountain – simple, fresh, and delicious.

Tell us about your partnerships with local suppliers like Farmer Angus and Meuse Farm.

Our relationships with local suppliers are foundational to our menu’s success. They work tirelessly to ensure they supply the highest-

quality ingredients, and it’s our job to honour those ingredients. Iming of Meuse Farm is hands-on and passionate, which is why so many chefs rely on her ingredients. I also visited Farmer Angus’s farm with a few of my chefs. We were blown away. I got to hold the chickens that lay our eggs! Farmer Angus’s charcuterie is exceptional, comparable to what you’d find in parts of Europe.

What

makes the Saturday Braai unique for you?

I recently returned to SA after living abroad for 12 years, and the braai was one of the things I missed deeply. It’s not just about the food – it’s the camaraderie, the values, and the experience. At Mount Nelson we host a lot of international guests; offering them an authentic South African braai experience just makes sense. Our Saturday braais are about capturing the essence of braai culture –making friends with the table next to you, sharing

a variety of local meats with friends and family, and enjoying live acoustic music in the background. From start to finish, it’s authentic. We surprise our guests with snacks like crisps, biltong, boerewors, and Amarula on crushed ice as they’re seated, among others. We also showcase local beers and wines.

Which braai item would you recommend guests try first, and why?

I’d encourage them to try a little bit of everything, as we’re cooking recipes from South Africa’s beautiful cultures. Think braai meats, braaibroodjies, malva pudding, peppermint crisp tart, chakalaka, mieliepap, and local cheeses. We’re known for our generosity. Showcasing that generosity and abundance is something we do on Saturdays, and I think our guests will appreciate this as they experience the true spirit of South African hospitality.

The cocktails at The Fountain are an integral part of the dining experience. How do you collaborate with Head Mixologist Jonathan Makonga to create drinks that complement the food and atmosphere?

Jonathan Makonga is one of the best mixologists I’ve worked with, and we share a passion for our individual crafts and, most importantly, for our guests. He embraces seasonality and uses the freshest ingredients, many of which are sourced from our very own mixology garden. We’ve worked closely together on creating garnishes for each cocktail. For example, we’ve used fresh bee pollen on the rim of a glass to be licked before sipping a cocktail that highlights honey. For our espresso martini, we’ve used a braaied marshmallow as a garnish. Jonathan’s beverage programme is something to watch – it perfectly complements the food and atmosphere at The Fountain.

Mount Nelson is known for its timeless elegance, but with these new culinary experiences, there’s a fresh, contemporary vibe…

I’ve always appreciated and respected what Mount Nelson is known for. It does many things exceptionally well, and I honour that. Changing things that don’t need to be changed is something I am conscious of – after all, many of our guests come here to enjoy the timeless experiences the hotel offers. My goal is to challenge myself to create things that will stand the test of time. I believe someone has to start a trend, but implementing those trends thoughtfully so they won’t fade quickly, is key. IB

This recipe combines the indulgence of deep-frying with the sophistication of a wine gravy. Deep-frying adds an unmatched crispiness to the Eisbein. For the best crackling, ensure the pork skin is thoroughly dried in the fridge overnight.

Serves: 4-6 people

INGREDIENTS

• 2 x 500-600g pork knuckles (Eisbein)

• 2 tablespoons white vinegar

For the marinade rub:

• 2 teaspoons pink salt

• 1 teaspoon black pepper

• 1 teaspoon chilli flakes

• 1 teaspoon thyme

• 1 teaspoon oregano

• 1 teaspoon fennel seeds

For the bouillon gravy:

• 1 cup red wine

• 1 cup chicken broth

CRISPY DEEP-FRIED EISBEIN WITH WINE GRAVY & POLENTA

• 1 carrot, unpeeled, sliced 2cm

• 1 onion, unpeeled, sliced into chunks

• ½ head garlic, crushed

• 4 star anise

• 2 bay leaves (fresh or dried)

• 1 tablespoon soy sauce

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

• 1 tablespoon corn starch (to thicken)

• salt and pepper, to taste

• 1L vegetable oil for frying

• soft polenta to serve

• fresh herbs to serve

METHOD

1. Dry out the Eisbein overnight in the fridge for optimal crackling.

2. Poke small holes all over the skin with a sharp knife or pin, taking care not to pierce the flesh.

3. Brush the vinegar onto the pork flesh (not the skin).

4. Mix the marinade rub ingredients and apply to the pork, then coat the skin with a little oil.

5. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the vegetables, herbs, and spices in a roasting pan, topped with the Eisbein.

6. Roast for 2 hours and 10 minutes, rotating halfway through. Turn off the oven afterwards.

7. Fry the Eisbein in a heavybased pot for 5-8 minutes, until crispy, to achieve the perfect crackling.

8. Mix the wine, chicken stock, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and cornstarch with the roasted vegetables to make the gravy. Cook in the oven or a saucepan to thicken.

9. Serve the crispy knuckle over polenta, drizzled with the wine gravy.

10. Garnished with fresh mixed herbs.

MISO BUTTERNUT SOUP

Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS

• 1.25kg butternut squash

• 2-3 tablespoons olive oil

• 2 shallots, finely diced

• 2 large garlic cloves, finely diced

• 6cm piece of ginger, finely diced

• 1 small red chilli, finely diced (optional, adjust to taste)

• 4 cups salt-free veggie stock

• 2½ tablespoons miso

• 2 tablespoons lime juice

• 2 tablespoons coconut milk or cream, to serve (optional)

• fresh coriander, to serve (optional)

• sesame seeds, to serve (optional)

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C and line a baking tray with a piece of baking paper.

2. Wash the skin of the butternut squash well. Instead of peeling and cubing the squash, which requires quite a bit of effort, cut it into 1.5cm slices and then into halfmoons. Brush the flesh with a bit of olive oil and bake for about 40 minutes, until caramelised and soft. Turn the pieces over halfway through the baking time. Let the roasted squash cool enough to handle, then peel off the skin.

3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pot over low-medium

heat. Add diced shallots and cook for a minute or so. Then add chopped garlic, ginger, and chilli (if using). Stir the mixture frequently to prevent the aromatics from burning. Cook for about 3-4 minutes.

4. Once the squash is roasted, add it to the pot and coat it in the shallot, garlic, chilli, and ginger mixture.

5. Remove the pot from the heat and purée the mixture with the vegetable stock until smooth using a handheld blender, or purée mixture and stock in an upright blender.

6. Place the miso paste in a small bowl with 2-3 tablespoons of warm water. Whisk the miso with a wire whisk until it transforms into a smooth and thick paste.

7. Return the blended soup to the pot, add the miso paste, and warm it up over low heat (avoid boiling, as excessive heat can destroy the nutritional properties of the miso paste).

8. Season the soup with lime juice and serve topped with a bit of coconut cream, fresh coriander, and sesame seeds.

Fierce, Fun + Fab

Kerry’s the friend who’s always living her best life, travelling the world, but still managing to show up with a smile, ready to make things more fun and unpredictable. Her journey is awe-inspiring, and honestly, we could all use a little more of her energy in our lives.

Dear Self,

Isn’t it fabulous how the universe sends you people who ooze the kind of friendship that quickly goes from casual to “OMG, you’re my person!”. You know, like when you finally find that one pair of pants that actually fits perfectly, and you think, “What took me so long?!”

She has

Pizzazz!

Anyway, one minute Kerry is globe-trotting across exotic lands like some kind of international mystery woman (probably with a martini –stirred, not shaken, in hand), and next minute, knockknock – she’s back at my door, ready to move in for the umpteenth time. I’m telling you; it’s like we’re destined to be housemates for life.

Kerry’s the friend everyone wants. She shows up with the best energy, whether it’s a random Tuesday or a lastminute weekend trip. She’ll drop everything to give you

her full attention, whether you need a lift to the airport, help with a project, or just want to chat. Who needs Uber when you have Kerry?

But here’s the thing: Kerry is also the ultimate enigma. She’s been through some seriously tough stuff in her life, but she never lets it show. Just keeps going, keeps laughing and being the strongest person in the room – no one knows the battles she’s fought. Is she secretly a superhero? I think so. And no – she’s not Jane Bond, just to be clear.

But she’s the kind of person who’ll give you the shirt off her back, listen to your rants, dance like nobody’s watching and remind you that life is too short to be anything but yourself. And honestly, as much as we joke about it, her knocking on my door to move back in is probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Kerry, you’re more than a housemate; you’re family. You’ve been my cheerleader, my therapist, and the person I can call whenever I need a laugh (and, possibly, an emergency pizza). No matter how many adventures you have, I’ll always be here for round 50 of “Welcome back!”. You teach me to live fully, be kind, and spread joy.

Gratitude, babes, gratitude... Milou

If any grape deserves to be cast in silver, it’s Pinotage, South Africa’s bold, homegrown icon.

On 30 April 2025, deep within Cape Town’s hidden gem, The Cape Mint, the first Pinotage Centenary Medallion was struck by Mr Pinotage himself, Beyers Truter. Sparks flew, history stirred, and a century of legacy was sealed in shining metal.

This isn’t just a coin – it’s a collector’s treasure, marking the journey from Perold’s 1925 experiment to global acclaim. Precision-forged, jewel-like and steeped in heritage, only 3 000 will ever be made.

About the Medallion

• Fine silver (Ag 999)

31.103g | 38mm diameter

• Proof finish with privy mark and wine-coloured glass

• Leatherette box

From R2 550 (subject to exchange rate and silver price)

Crafted in the Italian numismatic tradition, the medallion captures Pinotage’s essence: resilient, unique, and proudly South African.

In their words

“A symbol of everything Pinotage stands for.”

– Beyers Truter

“To celebrate it in metal is to treasure our story.”

– Natanya van Niekerk

What is the book about?

In Being There, Tony Leon, the longest serving leader of the opposition in democratic SA, and an acclaimed columnist and analyst, reflects on the nostalgia we often feel, through pain and pride, of childhood, school and the many ‘what ifs’ that inform a welllived and varied life. He also ponders how a wrong turn can change the course of one life.

Who should read it?

BOOK REVIEW Being There: Backstories from the Political Front

This book is for anyone with a passion for politics, history, and memoirs. With his trademark blend of acerbic wit and eloquence, Leon offers a compelling narrative that looks to the future while drawing on the lessons of the past. Being There is both a significant contribution to the discussion and a highly readable account.

The Fragile Mental Health of Strong Women

Lunga keeps quiet for a few minutes after my rant. I feel terrible for shouting at him. Babies cry, I rationalise. They are impatient because they have no sense of time. Lunga is not trying to ruin my life. I cannot assign malice to an infant. I bend down to kiss an apology into his forehead, but he starts wailing, trying to thrust the pacifier out of his mouth.

Black women are labelled as strong; their tears often seen as indulgent, their suffering expected to have an imminent expiration date. In Michelle Kekana’s ambitious debut, three modern South African women find themselves brought to breaking point as they navigate the complexities of life, love and mental health. Utterly engrossing from the very first page, The Fragile Mental Health of Strong Women is a bold exploration of what it really means to be ‘strong’.

I Cancervive: Cancer Took Two Years of My life

In I Cancervive, Sharmie Vee shares her raw, honest journey through a cancer diagnosis she was stunned by during a global pandemic. With humour and vulnerability, she explores fear, faith, and unexpected strength. This memoir is a powerful testament to resilience, the support relationships bring, and how God can transform pain into purpose and give you beauty from ashes. Offering hope, healing, and inspiration, I Cancervive is not just about surviving cancer, it’s about rediscovering life, purpose, and the beauty of second chances.
