HELLO, MAY!

THIS SPECIAL MONTH IS DEDICATED TO CELEBRATING MOTHERS, SO WE’VE PUT TOGETHER AN ISSUE THAT DOES JUST THAT, AMONG OTHER THINGS.

This month we get to meet the moms of some of our local celebs, help you decide on the perfect gift idea for your own mom and offer a peek at the elegant tones and textures of the Winter fashion out there. We review local and international travel destinations (perhaps something to add to that Mother’s Day gift list, next time). And – don’t know what to cook for Mom to add those extra ladles of love? We’ve got you covered there, too.

As a mom of two, I tend to look forward to Mother’s Day; there’s something about those cute, self-made love notes the littlies create and the heartfelt effort they put into making the day special for me (with a little help from Dad, I’m sure).

Of course, I have to use my ed’s privilege here to honour my mom, Joyce America, and mother-in-law, Christine Valentine, for the amazing role they play in my life.

But back to the other stories you can look forward to in this jam-packed May edition. We got to test-drive the third generation Renault Duster on the Atlantis Dunes and boy, can that baddie dominate the hills! There’s also a new dating app in town, matching up corporate candidates, nogal. Yep , it turns out you can mix business with pleasure – after a fashion…

Not to hand out too many spoilers, but my team brought their A-game in unearthing the latest trends in all things lifestyle and entertainment to tantalise your taste buds. Whatever it is you’re after, we’ve got it right here in Inbound SA.

Until we read again,

Valentine

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION…

Why do you have to turn off your electronic devices or switch to flight mode, before take-off?

ANSWER:

You’re asked to switch to flight mode before takeoff to prevent possible interference with aircraft systems, avoid disrupting ground cell networks, and ensure passengers stay alert during critical flight phases like takeoff and landing. Your phone might keep trying (and failing) to connect to multiple cell towers as the plane climbs, which drains your battery fast.

This opportunity will allow young people to explore careers in aircraft maintenance, valuabledevelop skills and secure employment in a high – demand sector.

Pioneering Aircraft Maintenance

ELANGENI TVET COLLEGE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH STARLITE AVIATION GROUP, IS SET TO LAUNCH ITS AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MECHANICS PROGRAMME AT THE END OF MAY 2025, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN SOUTH AFRICA. IN THIS Q&A WITH COLLEGE PRINCIPAL AND RECTOR, MRS TJ KULA, WE EXPLORE WHAT MAKES THIS INITIATIVE UNIQUE AND HOW IT WILL SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY.

Why was launching this programme a priority for Elangeni TVET College?

Aviation is key to South Africa’s economic growth, but there’s a shortage of skilled aircraft maintenance professionals. By partnering with Starlite Aviation Training Academy, the College aims to provide quality training and practical experience. The programme also helps make aviation more accessible to township communities, bringing the industry closer to those previously excluded.

How does the partnership with Starlite Aviation enhance hands-on training?

Students benefit from hands-on training through Starlite’s Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO), gaining direct experience with operational aircraft from day one. This apprenticeship model not only improves practical skills but also makes

students more competitive in the job market. Starlite contributes to curriculum development, ensuring alignment with current industry standards and boosting the programme’s relevance. Their guidance was instrumental in developing the Inanda Campus workshop, from equipment selection to layout and aircraft requirements.

With qualification achievable in three years, and an optional two years for specialisation, how will students be supported to stay motivated?

The Aircraft Maintenance Mechanics Programme is designed to provide continuous academic, emotional, and career support at every stage. This includes mentorship from industry professionals, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and exposure to real-world aircraft maintenance procedures. Recognising the emotional challenges students may face, the College will also implement structured mentorship programmes, regular check-ins to provide ongoing motivationand parental involvement is encouraged, as support from home plays a crucial role in student success.

How is the programme preparing students for the evolving aviation industry and emerging technologies in aircraft maintenance?

To keep pace with these changes, the College has designed its Aircraft

Maintenance Mechanics Programme to incorporate modern aircraft systems, digital diagnostics, and updated safety regulations. And, with Starlite Aviation, students will receive hands-on training with the latest aircraft models and technologies. This blend of practical and theoretical learning ensures they are proficient in both traditional and modern maintenance techniques. The curriculum will be regularly reviewed and updated to align with the latest developments in aviation technology.

What key advantages does this programme offer over other aviation maintenance training options in South Africa?

• A structured five-year path to obtaining an AME Licence

• A combination of academic learning and fulltime practical apprenticeships

• Direct mentorship from aviation professionals at Starlite’s AMO

• Industry-relevant training recognised by SACAA and TETA

• High employability due to strong industry ties and real-world experience

How will lecturers at Elangeni TVET and Starlite collaborate to balance theory with real-world experience?

Lecturers, referred to as “instructors” as they will work closely to ensure a balanced approach between theory and practical application, focusing on delivering foundational knowledge in aviation science, engineering principles, and aircraft maintenance protocols, while Starlite’s industry experts will provide hands-on training in real-world aviation settings.

What are the career opportunities graduates can expect, and how does the programme help them get into the industry?

Graduates will be wellpositioned for careers as:

• Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs)

• Avionics Technicians

• Aerospace Quality

• Assurance Inspectors

• Aviation Safety Officers

Through their apprenticeship with Starlite, students will have built strong professional networks, increasing their chances of securing permanent employment after graduation. Many of our students will also have the opportunity to be absorbed into Starlite’s workforce.

Technology is reshaping education. How is the College integrating digital tools and modern teaching methods?

The College embraces hybrid learning through platforms like MS Teams and the EAPRO online programme, ensuring continuity despite challenges like power outages or disruptions. This flexible approach builds students’ tech skills, independence, and readiness for the fast-paced aviation industry. Simulated training environments also allow students to practise maintenance procedures before applying them in real-world settings.

What advice would you give to students who are considering enrolling for this programme?

Students considering the Aircraft Maintenance Mechanics Programme at Elangeni TVET College should approach it with dedication and perseverance. The path is challenging, but with industry exposure, mentorship, and a strong commitment to learning, students will be wellprepared. Success requires hard work, problemsolving, and confidence. IB

CELEB-RATING OUR MOMS

MAY BEING THE MONTH OF HONOURING OUR MOTHERS, WE AT INBOUND SA DECIDED TO CATCH UP WITH LOCAL CELEBS AND ASK: “WHAT MAKES YOUR MOM, UNIQUE?”

5FM radio host Nick Hamman and mom, Mary-Anne

“My mom and has always been a grounding force in my life. From a young age, she encouraged me to follow my dreams, no matter how unconventional they seemed. She nurtured a sense of curiosity, creativity, and wonder that ultimately shaped my love for storytelling and radio. Her belief in the magic of possibility is something I carry with me in every show I do.”

Actress Jill Levenberg and mom, Carol

“My mom is older now... frail, and struggles a bit with her memory. But she hasn’t lost her wit, charm and sharp sense of humour. She still cracks jokes and makes everyone around her laugh at the strangest times. This I find so special, and that she still reminds me she believes I can do anything I put my mind to. Or, that through my faith in God I can conquer any battles and struggles I face in life. She really is a pillar of strength and support, even though our roles have swapped and she is the one who needs to be cared for these days. I have a great admiration and respect for her generosity of spirit.

Rapper Early B and mom, Linda Swartz

“This is my mom, Linda Swartz. My rock, my alles. She is truly one of my biggest inspirations in life; her willpower and faith is what I most admire, among her many great traits. She was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis) 34 years ago and she was still able to raise me and my sister and be a wonderful wife to Dad, who’s still standing strong today. The best advice my mom gave me was this: ‘You don’t have to worry about anything if you pray about everything.’”

DJ Roger Goode and his mom-in-law, Shelley

“This Mother’s Day, I’m tipping my hat to my motherin-law, a woman whose backbone and flair carved out a remarkable life for my wife. As a single mother, she embraced the roles of both father and mother, a duality I deeply admire, working night shifts at a chocolate factory to provide for her daughter. Her past shines with distinction. Once a companion to a pet monkey, she chose veganism with the same pluck that drove her to fashion college in a pink Beetle, both car and tuition earned through nothing but determination - a testament to her self-made spirit. Today, she directs an interior decorating agency, bringing a refined touch to luxury hotels and sites around the world with her sharp, elegant eye. My wife grew up surrounded by art and creativity, and that spark now runs through our family. She’s also a wonderful grandmother to our young daughter, extending her influence with steady grace. This Mother’s Day, we’re raising a toast to a woman who’s built something real; whose grit and grace defy the ordinary. A mother whose bold moves and sharp style leave me in awe, leaving an imprint as timeless as the beauty she designs.”

MasterChef SA 2025 winner Bridget Mangwandi and mom, Electra

“My mom is the most consistent source of love and support in my life. She’s never forced me into a box but has always given me the space to explore who I am while quietly walking beside me every step of the way. When I first fell in love with cooking, she would collect recipes for me, cutting them out, saving them, and encouraging my passion in every small way. She made sure I had the ingredients I needed, even when it wasn’t easy, and she believed in my talent long before I ever did. Beyond nurturing my creativity, she’s helped shape my academic drive and entrepreneurial mindset - foundations that have carried me to where I am today. We genuinely do so much together, from playing golf to laughing, learning, and pushing each other to grow. Through every phase of life, and especially on my MasterChef journey, she’s been my biggest cheerleader and my calm in the chaos. So much of who I am is because of her.”

Drag entertainer Manila von Teez and mom, Anne

“What makes my mom special to me is that she raised five children all by herself. She never waivered in her support and love for each and every one of us, sharing equally at all times. Today, that same love is being shared by my sisters with their children, and I can see the values she instilled in us making a difference. She is a strong-willed woman who deserves all the love and cherished moments we spend with her. Ek is baie lief vir Mammie!”

STILL LOOKING FOR THAT PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY GIFT? WELL, THE CLOCK IS TICKING, SO YOU’D BETTER GET ON WITH IT. WHAT DO YOU GET THE WOMAN WHO DESERVES IT ALL? THIS IS WHY WE’VE MADE IT OH-SO-SIMPLE FOR YOU. FROM PAMPER PRODUCTS TO JEWELLERY AND SNAZZY PYJAMAS, WE’VE CREATED A HANDY ROUNDUP OF THE PERFECT PRESENTS FOR YOUR MUM –OR FOR YOU!

PARTY-HARDY WITH BLACK COFFEE IN BERLIN

The performance offers a chance to celebrate the unique cultural tapestry woven by Black Coffee’s music, a sound that resonates far beyond the borders of South Africa, his homeland. Berlin, a city known for its diverse creativity, Cold War history and many subversive subcultures seems quite an appropriate setting for ’Coffee’s high jinks.

THULI PHONGOLO RETURNS TO GENERATIONS: THE LEGACY

Thuli Phongolo is slipping back into her stilettos as Namhla Diale on Generations: The Legacy, and let’s just say, this is not the same shy teen we waved goodbye to. Namhla made her return on 25 April, worldly, confident and ready to take on big life energy. Gone is the awkward girl-next-door. After some time abroad (and clearly levelling up), she’s back with ambition, edge, and just enough sass to make things interesting. But it’s not all sunshine and power suits. Her relationships are as messy as ever. She still clashes with her mum Lucy, and daddy dearest Jack Mabaso is determined to pull her into his dark, dangerous world. Tempting, yes. Safe? Not so much. “Returning to The Legacy feels like coming home.” says Thuli. “I’m excited to... bring new energy to my character’s journey.” We say, buckle up. Namhla’s back, and she’s playing to win.

Char Carrie

SHARES THE POWERFUL BOND SHE HAS WITH HER MOM, CHARMAINE JOHNSON

CHAR CARRIE PLAYS THE VIBRANT ANGIE IN KYKNET’S POPULAR SOAPIE, SUIDOOSTER. HERE SHE REFLECTS ON THE INVALUABLE INFLUENCE HER MOTHER, CHARMAINE JOHNSON, HAS HAD ON HER LIFE.

My mom stood by me - attending auditions, withhelping selftapes, and spurring me on, especially during

moments of doubt.

Born and raised in a modest household, Char’s journey into acting was far from a smooth ascent. “I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Acting for Camera at City Varsity. After college, I landed an agent, but it took four tough years of auditions and small roles before I finally secured my part in Suidooster in 2022,” she says.

Over the years, Char has drawn immense inspiration from her mother, who has, she says, personified independence throughout her life. “My mom never allows being a single mother to stand in the way of success,” she says, her voice warming with affection. “We struggled at times, but she made sure I never felt like I was missing anything. She was always enough.”

Describing her mother as a force of nature, Char says: “Her energy is amazing. Plus, she has an incredible sense of humour.”

Charmaine instilled life lessons that shaped the woman Char is today. “My life wasn’t the hardest, but we faced challenges. My mom always ensured we survived, regardless of our circumstances.” Recalling countless moments in their home, Char fondly recounts, “She taught me resilience. From changing light bulbs to handling household repairs and combating spiders, she epitomises what it means to be an independent woman.”

On her alter ego, Angie, Char says: “I don’t think we’re alike in many ways; Angie is much sharper and more outspoken. I take the time to consider my words more carefully. However, we do share a similar honesty; we aren’t afraid of expressing how we feel.”

We asked Charmaine whether she’d spotted any similarities between Char and her Suidooster character, Angie.

“I don’t think Char is anything like Angie, Angie is quite flinty. Char is more considered in her responses. But they’re both unafraid of sharing their emotions.”

Char’s gratitude for her mother’s unwavering support is evident. “She’s been beside me every step of the way. My career is a significant gamble, with no guarantees of work. Money was often tight, which made finding a job crucial. Yet, my mom stood by me - attending auditions, helping with self-tapes, and spurring me on, especially during moments of doubt. I am infinitely grateful for the woman she has shaped me into.”

Looking back, Char reflects on her upbringing with fondness: “I wouldn’t change a thing. It was filled with love, even amid the struggles.” IB

In a candid conversation on the What in the Winkler?! podcast, Rumer Willis, 36-year-old actress daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, disclosed that she and her sisters, Scout (33), and Tallulah, (31) maintain a unique tradition of taking baths together, a testament, she says, to the affectionate environment in which they were raised. “That’s just the kind of house that I grew up in.” Rumer added that while it might seem unusual to some, it feels entirely natural to her. The actress likened the practice to raising an infant animal. “Imagine if you took a baby gorilla or a dog when it was two weeks old, three months old, whatever, and had it sleep in a different room than mum,” she said. And while er, no, we don’t get the analogy, we kind of understand what she means – maybe… She also drew parallels with her own parenting style, particularly with her daughter, Louetta, who is nearly two years old. “Honestly, I hope Lou will still sleep in bed with me when she’s my age. I still sleep in bed with my mum, sometimes,” Rumer stated.

What’s been your biggest “pinch-me” moment in your influencer career?

When I organised 600 pads for donation within a week.

Describe your content style in three words… Unique; Hilarious; Attention-grabbing

If you had to delete all but one social media app, which one would you keep?

I wouldn’t delete any, because every app has its influence. But Facebook, if I’d have to.

Name a “guilty” pleasure you’re not ashamed of at all?

My guilty pleasure is to keep on doing Afrikaans content, because I don’t know what doing this content holds for me in the future.

What’s been your biggest “pinch-me” moment in your influencer career?

I’ve never aspired to be an influencer, as the term often implies curated perfection. Instead, I focus on being authentic and using my art, social media, and individuality to inspire and influence others.

Describe your content style in three words… Authentic, inspiring, and thought-provoking.

If you had to delete all but one social media app, which one would you keep?

I would choose TikTok to keep. Its short and on-the-go format make it entertaining and informative, offering a unique glimpse into global trends and topics.

What’s been your biggest “pinch-me” moment in your influencer career?

I was at the 2024 DStv Content Creator Awards and bumped into a stranger, a young photographer from Mitchell’s Plain who explained he’d made the journey from Cape Town to Joburg because of my content. Not any specific part of it, but the fact that someone that looks like me could show him that yes, young dudes from the Flats and Cape Town’s outskirts can pursue a career in media, express themselves in ways considered non-traditional, and just be themselves 100% of the time. It wasn’t so much a pinch me, as a recentring moment. That, and being selected as a TikTok judge for Business’s first international Ad Awards in 2024. That was huge.

Describe your content style in three words… Only three words? Direct, well-researched, organic.

If you had to delete all but one social media app, which one would you keep?

The obvious option would be TikTok wouldn’t it? But I would actually keep something like WhatsApp. Staying in touch with my friends and family is more important than anything in this world.

Name a “guilty” pleasure you’re not ashamed of at all?

I really don’t think of anything I do as a guilty pleasure. If you enjoy something it really shouldn’t be held up to other people’s standards of enjoyment and propriety. Having said that, I have a growing sneaker collection that’s getting a bit out of hand, and a heavy addiction to trying to rank up in Fortnite.

My “pinch me moment” was when I started connecting with women on Instagram who were experiencing the same issues and struggles (adult acne, going off my contraceptive), hopes and dreams, and I thought, WHAT THE HECK!? As women, we are powerful on our own, but how much more powerful wouldn’t we be if we worked together?! Being an introvert myself, I was totally hooked by the community element.

Describe your content style in three words… Free, self-believing, courageous.

HARD – yoh! Cos I’m addicted to socials. If I had to, then everything but Instagram. I have a solid community here and really love the space.

A TO ZAKES!

THE GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING MUSICIAN, KNOWN FOR HIS INFECTIOUS AFROBEATS AND SOULFUL MELODIES, HAS CARVED A NICHE FOR HIMSELF IN AN INDUSTRY THAT IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING. IN A CANDID INTERVIEW WITH INBOUND SA, HE UNVEILED THE PHILOSOPHY THAT HAS NURTURED HIS ARTISTIC JOURNEY.

In the South African music industry, few names stand out quite like Zakes Bantwini’s. But despite the accolades and international acclaim over a 20-year career in the business, Bantwini remains grounded and humble. “To stay in this industry, you need to be open to collaboration,” he says, emphasising the importance of collaboration in an industry that thrives on synergy.

For him, the foundation of his longevity and relevance in music stems from the nurturing relationships he formed with seasoned musicians in his youth, a practice he fervently continues now, this time working alongside younger talent.

“Now that I am older, I enjoy collaborating with younger people, being open to learning new ways and styles, and adapting without forgoing who and what the Zakes Bantwini brand is,” he says.

Bantwini’s admiration for Nigerian musician and political activist Fela Kuti - “my ultimate muse,”is a testament to his rich musical heritage. Kuti’s impactful writing style and innovative approach is a huge inspiration he channels into every project, he says.

Bantwini explains that after winning a Grammy, he experienced a transformative shift. “A Grammy is the pinnacle in music accolades. Winning a Grammy has changed my career; even if people don’t know who you are, once they hear you won a Grammy, they realise how serious a musician you are,” he says.

This recognition has led to numerous international collaborations, which further solidified his status. A pivotal moment was when he collaborated with his promotional team, Grid Worldwide, to launch 608, a platform that, according to Grid, “creates new platforms

for growth by defining an idea and behaviour that facilitates how brands can achieve a more purposeful future”. In other words, it’s music with meaning. The partnership works for him, Reflecting on the partnership, Bantwini says, because their “… relationship has always been symbiotic, open and collaborative.”

And the collab has borne fruit, facilitating meaningful events in South Africa’s cultural landscape, such as his innovative Abantu concert, which featured local and international artists and a satellite link-up with the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final, as well as recognition at the 2024 Loeries.

“Brand Zakes is really a people’s brand,” he explains, sharing how many find inspiration from his journey from Durban’s KwaMashu township to the global stage.

Bantwini’s wife, Nandi, plays an active role in his career; she is his first sounding board, providing crucial feedback and constant support in navigating the challenges that come with fame. “Nandi is such an extension of me. I bounce everything off of her; she will ask the right questions, make suggestions and raise objections,” Bantwini says.

On a personal note, Bantwini speaks fondly of Zanzibar’s Stone Town, a place that deeply moved him during an international performance there. The rich cultural tapestry left an indelible mark, broadening his perspectives and informing his music, too.

“I was amazed at the deep-rooted culture. It was only a short flight away from Johannesburg, but so different, and it evoked so much emotion within me,” he says.

As he looks to the future, Bantwini expresses excitement around various upcoming projects at his his production company, Mayonie Productions, including a World Record attempt in collaboration with 608.

“We’re always trying to push the envelope,” he enthuses, indicating that the goal is to continue creating significant moments in global culture. In terms of artistic direction, Bantwini shares his approach to collaboration, prioritising genuine energy over big names.

“Music has never disappointed me, the music will pick whoever it wants working on it, I don’t follow names any more; I just follow the energy of the music. Whether it leads me to Burna Boy or Kabza De Small, I will follow it wherever it takes me.”

This approach highlights his dedication to authenticity, and he urges aspiring artists to keep honing their craft and remain true to themselves without succumbing to trends. Ultimately, says Bantwini, his aim is to be remembered as someone who improved the musical landscape he inhabited. “I want to be remembered as the guy who left the music industry better than the way he found it,” Bantwini says.

With aspirations to foster better relationships within the industry and produce positive cultural shifts, he defines success by the constructive and affirmative impact he aspires to have on the industry, rather than merely by commercial gain. IB

Mel Jones on mastering

COMEDY AND MOTHERHOOD

AT 51 YEARS YOUNG, THIS FEISTY, FABULOUS ENTERTAINER SHARES HER EXPERIENCES AS A COMEDIAN AND DISHES ON THE CHALLENGES OF SINGLE MOTHERHOOD.

In the vibrant streets of Cape Town, comedy is a way of life. And few do it better than the tour de force that is Mel Jones. With her unique brand of humour, she has mastered the art of captivating audiences, merging insightful observations with personal flair. Her journey in comedy began years ago, nurtured by an insatiable love of laughter and storytelling. No mere standup comedian, she is also a mentor, trailblazer, and a beacon for aspiring comics, having helped to mould many of the hilarious voices now gracing stages across South Africa.

When did you start your comedy career ?

I started my comedy career on a Sunday night at the Armchair Theatre in Observatory, Cape Town. This was after I’d attended a workshop at the Cape Comedy Collective because my mom had seen an ad in the paper – so, thanks, Mom!

You’re a mom and a hilarious comedian; does your son play pranks on you?

Funny story… my son was born on 2 April and I went into labour on 1 April. When I got to the clinic, the nurse said that I had gone into false labour, so I had to go all the way back home and my son was only born the next day. So technically, my son was the first person to play an April Fool’s prank on me before he was even born.

How do you separate being a mom from being an entertainer?

I don’t. My son and I were driving on the way home from somewhere and I was chatting away, not even realising that he was tired and wanted to nap. When I finally paused, he grinned, “You know, Mommy, you don’t have to MC everything”. But as a single mom, I had to be creative with my parenting and I tried to make things fun – because good parenting takes a lot of effort. Children follow your example, not your instructions.

Where do you get your humour from – mom or dad?

From both of them in different ways. My mother was gentle, but she had a carefree, silly side. My dad was stricter, but he had a goofy side and plenty of dad jokes that we often had to endure during family get-togethers. I was lucky to have a childhood filled with laughter. And a few hidings, but that was because I was naughty. Thank goodness I’m not naughty any more, (wink-wink).

If you weren’t a comedian, which career would you choose?

I love to write, so maybe an author. I love to create, so perhaps a producer or a director. I worked in radio for 10 years, so I could be a presenter again. I don’t think I was designed for an office. I would run amok and cause chaos. Do you know that some people have meetings every day? Madness!!! IB

Chasing AFCON Glory

ALEX IWOBI CHARTS HIS FOOTBALLING TRAJECTORY AND CHATS ABOUT THE UPCOMING AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS, WHERE HE IS ONE OF THE ACES LEADING THE CHARGE FOR THE NIGERIAN TEAM, AKA THE SUPER EAGLES.

“Imean, two years ago we came so close; hopefully, this year is our time –like I say every time,’ he ruefully says. But his words reflect the Super Eagles’ growing ambition to regain their former glory.

His aspirations are backed by his rich football pedigree (his maternal uncle is Nigerian great, Jay-Jay Okocha, and his father, Chuka Iwobi, was also a footballer) and a solid foundation built during his formative years at Arsenal, where he made his professional debut in 2015.

Wasting no time there, Iwobi showed an impressive combination of skill, creativity, and tactical intelligence, catching the eye of fans and critics alike.

Following his tenure at Arsenal, Iwobi made a significant move to Everton before settling at Fulham, where he has continued to excel.

“Fulham is a great club; the team behind me gives me the confidence and the license to go and express myself,” he says.

The goal ahead

As he looks towards the AFCON this December in Morocco, Iwobi expresses optimism about Nigeria’s chances.

“We’ve got an exciting young team; we’re just maturing. We’re learning about each other again. So, yeah, I’m confident; hopefully [host country] Morocco will leave a statement,” he shares, excitedly.

The Super Eagles are in Group C, alongside formidable opponents Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

With his experience in the tough English Premier League (EPL), Iwobi is well-equipped to handle the intense pressure that comes with representing his national team.

“It’s easier when you have a good support system,” he says. “Fulham supports me and I’m happy there. So, I feel like when I’m happy, that’s when I play my best football,” Iwobi says, reckoning that this will translate to the international arena as well.

The upcoming AFCON tournament represents more than just another competition for Iwobi. Ultimately, it’s about contributing to Nigeria’s rich footballing heritage – like his uncle Jay-Jay and father, Chuka. IB

SOCCER

Messi, Messi, Messi!

This year, the FIFA Club World Cup, held in the United States, takes on an exciting new chapter as it welcomes David Beckham’s Inter Miami to the world stage. Of course, the main attraction is Lionel Messi, whose presence is bound to bolster the tournament’s profile and bring international attention to Major League Soccer (MLS). This is not Messi’s first MLS rodeo; the Argentine superstar has had three previous triumphs, in 2009, 2011, and 2015, during his illustrious stint at Barcelona. Having conquered European football, the legendary forward now looks to carve out a similar legacy in the States.

ROOS: SA’S X-FACTOR

ACRICKET

IN COMES RYAN RICKELTON…

With only a few weeks remaining until the highly anticipated ICC World Test Championship Final, South Africa and Australia are deep into their separate (of course) strategic discussions as they prepare to clash for cricket’s ultimate prize at Lord’s Cricket Ground. All eyes seem to be on talented wicketkeeper and top-order batsman, Ryan Rickelton, whose prowess with the bat will be pivotal to the Proteas thwarting the Australian bowling attack. Will Rickelton be the spark that ignites the Proteas’ charge to victory, or will Australia’s seasoned players prove too strong? One thing is certain: cricket fans are in for a thrilling spectacle.

t the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, all eyes are set to be on South Africa’s dynamic fullback, Nadine Roos. Named SA Rugby’s 2024 Women’s Player of the Year, Roos is emerging as a pivotal figure for the national team. Her exceptional versatility has made a vital impact on both the sevens and 15-a-side formats of the game. She is recognised as one of South Africa’s greatest sportswomen and is a serious threat on the field, so it’s no wonder she is considered a key player in SA’s ambitions for the tournament. Her coaches and teammates acknowledge Roos as the team’s X-factor bringing incredible flair and creativity to the gameplay.

Tarryn Lamb’s journey

OF PERSEVERANCE AND PASSION

TARRYN LAMB’S CAREER IN MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT TRAILS A STRING OF HIT SINGLES AND TWO SA MUSIC AWARDS WITH HER ALL-FEMALE BAND, BLACKBYRD. BUT WHAT IT TOOK TO GET THERE, SHE SAYS, WAS PASSION, PERSEVERANCE, AND INTENTIONAL SELF-DISCOVERY.

Born into a family steeped in musical tradition, Lamb’s early exposure to music was both enduring and formative. She started out singing in her church choir and honed her dancing skills in ballroom and Latin American from an early age.

Her journey to stardom was set in motion as she auditioned for Idols SA. Though she didn’t get very far in the competition, she persisted, pursuing formal studies at the Waterfront Theatre School in Cape Town.

There were obstacles. She’s been a part of two failed bands, before Blackbyrd, but ironically, says Lamb, “One of the most significant hurdles I’ve encountered in my career was learning to speak Afrikaans. My Mom’s side of the family is English and my Dad’s is Afrikaans, so my tjommies and I spoke our version of Afrikaans, called mengels.

Fans will be happy to know that Tarryn and her BlackByrd bandmates are currently in the studio. “We’ve been having a ball finding our feet in the band, writing new music and getting to perform together around SA,” she says. IB

Remembering the Jaggerinspired suspension

In May 1964, eleven boys at a Coventry school were suspended for sporting hairstyles inspired by one of the era’s most flamboyant icons – Mick Jagger. The lead singer of the Rolling Stones was not simply a rock star; he was a cultural phenomenon whose ‘shag’ haircut — now often referred to as a mullet — had become emblematic of the shifting youth culture and a burgeoning rebellion against conformity. As for old Blubber Lips, he would go down as being part of the greatest and most successful band in rock music history.

KNOW YOUR MAY MUSIC HISTORY!

Oops! Britney did it again

In May 2000, the music world was set alight as high school sophomore student Britney Spears unleashed her undeniable star power with the release of her album, Oops!...I Did It Again. Debuting at the top of the Billboard 200, the album quickly etched its mark into music history, becoming the fastestselling album by a female solo artist ever. The album featured a slew of hits that quickly became anthems of the era, including the irresistible “Lucky,” and the empowering “Stronger” which revealed the teen star’s evolved sound and artistic maturity.

Heist after Justin Bieber concert

In 2013, a gang of thieves made off with more than a million rand (approximately £70 000) in cash following a high-profile Justin Bieber concert at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium. The intruders, armed with ropes, hammers, and chisels, successfully infiltrated a strongroom that held the takings not only from the Bieber concert but also from a Bon Jovi performance the night before.

Sonja Swanepoel’S

AVIAN SCULPTURES HIGHLIGHT HUMANITY’S CONNECTION TO NATURE

SCULPTOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHITECT SONJA SWANEPOEL’S LATEST EXHIBITION CAN BE FOUND AMID THE CALMING AMBIENCE OF CAPE TOWN’S KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDENS. BUT THE AVIAN SERIES IS BOTH WOWING AUDIENCES AND JOLTING US OUT OF OUR IGNORANCE ON DIRE THE STATE OF THE WORLD’S ECOSYSTEM.

“In my series of works, exhibited all over Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, I explore man’s relationship with birds, their ancient history, and their role in our fragile ecosystem,” Swanepoel explains.

This thought-provoking work aims to recalibrate our understanding of humanity’s intricate relationship with the vast tapestry of life on Earth.

Swanepoel’s journey as an artist began with simple forms, evolving over time into works that speak volumes about the collective existence of the world’s species.

However, the initial spark for the AVIAN series was ignited in 2020, when a friend sent Swanepoel a photograph of pigeons perched dangerously close to a busy Johannesburg street.

The grace of these birds in a tumultuous setting intrigued her, leading to the creation of works such as Avis fractii - a poignant representation of a bird with a severed wing, symbolising the severity of the imbalance within our ecosystems.

“You do one sculpture, and you’re like, okay, maybe I should do two sculptures. Or three. So, I started with very simple forms, very simplistic shapes,” Swanepoel explains.

Each piece in the exhibition serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life, species extinction and factory farming.

By creating multiple interconnected forms, she highlights the importance of community in the avian world, and humanity’s responsibility towards it. “It’s about how they interact with each other, the play of space,” Swanepoel explains. Her art isn’t merely a showcase of talent; it is an active call to awareness about environmental stewardship. “You don’t have to like an art piece because I tell you this is amazing,” she remarks. “I think it’s very important to connect on an emotional level.”

Showcasing her work in a place like Kirstenbosch is deeply meaningful to her, says Swanepoel. “It’s like connecting this kind of perfect place with something so close to my heart - species extinction - and how do I get enough?” Swanepoel says.

This merging of art and environmentalism, she hopes will transform personal introspection into collective action. The AVIAN series is a tangible representation of her desire to initiate dialogues about conservation, using art as a catalyst for change. Swanepoel insists, however, that it’s not about everyone universally accepting her vision, but that she hopes visitors to the exhibition would at least ponder their sensitivities and connections to the natural world.

All works in the series are available in various sizes and media, accompanied by a detailed catalogue and price list upon request, making it accessible for art lovers and collectors alike. IB

Her sculptures do indeed evoke a visceral reaction, forcing participants to confront their own perceptions about the environmental crises facing our planet.

HOW TO TREAT

THEM

5 COMMON SKIN CONDITIONS AND

MANY OF US HAVE EXPERIENCED THAT HORRIBLE RED ZIT APPEARING ON THE MORNING OF A PARTY WE WERE ACHING TO SLAY. SOMETIMES, THOUGH, THEY CAN SIGNAL THE START OF A SKIN CONDITION THAT, IF MANAGED PROPERLY, CAN BE NIPPED IN THE BUD.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by persistent redness or flushing of the skin, especially on the cheeks, nose, and forehead. The exact causes of the condition are unknown; however, it is believed to be a combination of genetics and environmental stressors. Some of the most prominent symptoms of rosacea include increased vascularity, spider veins, abnormal thickening of the skin, swelling, and acne-like pustules.

There is no cure for rosacea, but there are several things you can do to keep the symptoms under control. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and depending on the severity of your rosacea and its causes and triggers, your doctor may prescribe oral or topical antibiotics. Other ways of managing flare-ups may include avoiding exposure to direct sunlight, avoiding alcohol and smoking, going for laser or light treatments and microdermabrasion. Use gentle skincare products free from soap and avoid harsh ingredients like alcohol, fragrances, menthol, and sodium lauryl sulphates.

Acne

Acne is no longer reserved for teenagers; in fact, adult acne is rapidly gaining momentum. Acne consists of whiteheads, pimples, nodules, and even cysts, which occur when hair follicles are plugged with sebum and dead skin cells. It varies from moderate to severe and may be caused by bacteria, hormonal fluctuations, or excess oil production.

Treatment largely depends on the cause of the acne. It may include applying certain skincare products to reduce your skin’s oil production or taking medication to balance your hormones. Skincare ingredients effective at treating acne include vitamin A, niacinamide, salicylic acid and

glycolic acid. If your skin is prone to acne, wash your pillowcase regularly, clean your cellphone daily and try not to touch your face.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation is one of the most common skincare concerns in SA. It refers to dark marks or patches on the skin that occur due to an overproduction of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour). There are different types of pigmentation, including postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkened spots that appear after skin injury or inflammation, such as a pimple) and melasma

(hyperpigmentation that occurs during pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations).

Treating pigmentation is a journey, and depending on the severity, your treatment plan may include skincare products designed to brighten skin, professional treatments such as laser, chemical peels or micro-needling and daily sun protection. The sun is a major contributor to the formation and deepening of dark marks, and you should wear an SPF product daily. Other skincare ingredients that may be beneficial include vitamin C (it helps fade existing dark marks and inhibits the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase, responsible for the production of melanin), vitamin A (it increases cellular turnover) and niacinamide (it inhibits melanin production).

Ageing

Our skin ages every day, and the signs of ageing will inevitably appear over time, no matter how well you look after your skin. Deep lines, wrinkles, sagging and loss of volume are common concerns for many people. Our skin naturally produces less collagen and elastin as we age, resulting in a loss of firmness. Our cell turnover rate slows, our skin gets drier, and years of sun exposure and lifestyle factors take their toll. However, all is not lost – with the right products and treatments, you can age gracefully and keep your skin looking younger for longer.

Sun protection is crucial, as exposure to the sun’s UVA rays lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF product every day for best results. Skincare products containing potent anti-ageing ingredients like growth factors, peptides, vitamin A, and vitamin C go a long way in reviving your skin and improving its appearance. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, and doing regular exercise also help to maintain a youthful complexion.

Scarring

This might not be one of the most commonly discussed skincare concerns, but scarring is a big priority for thousands of people. From hypertrophic and keloid scars to caesarean scars and cosmetic surgery scars, scarring takes many forms and may require some time to heal and improve in appearance.

Depending on the cause and type of scar, treatment may include applying silicone gels or sheets, steroid creams, and moisturisers that contain nourishing ingredients like vitamin E. Certain professional treatments, such as laser therapy, chemical peels, and microneedling, may also be effective in improving the appearance of a scar. IB

More Than Just Make-Up explores the transformative power of beauty beyond cosmetics. Camara Aunique connects beauty to self-expression, empowering individuals to embrace their unique features. This isn’t just about makeup, it’s a celebration of identity, confidence, and authenticity. Beauty, she contends, can be a journey of self-love and empowerment with every brushstroke. In this chat with Camara, we discover her philosophy.

Can you tell us about the inception of Camara Aunique Beauty?

I founded Camara Aunique Beauty in 2017. I have been doing makeup for 14 plus years.

What inspired you to start this brand?

I wanted to create a distinct brand, a makeup brand that doesn’t only speak to my spirit, but to women of God. There weren’t any brands representing Christ, and I wanted to give women options, to wear a brand that represented them as daughters of God.

You use the hashtag #MoreThanJustMakeup – what does it mean to you and your clients?

More than Just Makeup ™️ aren’t mere words, it’s

a movement to remind creatives that when we’re called to do makeup, hair, and nails as servants of Christ, it’s more than just makeup™️. We are laying hands and extending service in the purest form. Keeping ourselves sanctified and obedient can truly touch, transform and help our clients to where God is calling them to be. Its evident that we must submit to praying over our kits, brushes, and be intentional about the products we use on our clients.

Has there been a moment where a client felt truly seen and heard after you did their makeup? If so, can you share that experience?

I make sure I create a conversational atmosphere with my clients. Yes, I am the expert in that moment but they know their face better than me, so I like to ask questions and make sure I listen to their needs. I make my clients feel seen and heard.

Which celebrities do you work with?

I work with Angela Bassett, Naturi Naughton Lewis, Essence Atkins and many others.

Who were your first internationally recognised clients?

Angela Bassett and Thuso Mbedu.

My faves. What is the most recent project you’ve worked on that felt impactful and purposeful?

Expanding my beauty line to brushes and launching the ‘The Virtuous Woman Brush Set Vol 1 &2 with Ipsy. To still be standing after six years, and even expanding, is huge for me! I love that I am an extension of the stories of women in faith. Through my products, millions get to experience their stories and learn what it means to be virtuous.

What sets Camara Aunique Beauty apart from other beauty brands?

We won the Essence Best in Black Beauty Award for best lashes, and the Hello Beautiful Award for Best Beauty Brand in America. This sets us apart as the first award-winning faith-based beauty brand.

How do you envision the future of your brand?

I see the brand going into stores around the world. I would also love to launch elsewhere in Africa.

Beauty summed up in one line… Beauty is ‘More than Just Makeup™️’. it’s healing, it’s looking in the mirror and being able to see yourself in the image and likeness of God. IB

Choosing the best provider FOR IV THERAPY

IV VITAMIN THERAPY CAN BE A GAME-CHANGER FOR YOUR HEALTH, BUT CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROVIDER IS KEY. HERE ARE EIGHT ESSENTIAL FACTORS TO CONSIDER FOR A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE EXPERIENCE.

Intravenous vitamin (IV) therapy has gained popularity for its health benefits, ranging from hydration to nutrient supplementation. But with so many providers out there, how do you choose the right one? Here are eight crucial factors to consider when selecting the right provider for your needs.

1. Credentials and qualifications

Ensure provider employs licensed healthcare professionals, such as registered nurses, who are properly trained and that measures are in place to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

2. Quality of ingredients

Investigate the quality and source of ingredients and raw materials used in IV drips. Opt for providers who use medically approved vitamins, minerals, amino acids to ensure efficacy and safety.

3. Hygiene practices

Prioritise environments with strict hygiene protocols and sealed vitamin vials, and that the nurses are using gloves, and new needles for each client.

4. Transparent pricing

Choose a provider with transparent pricing structures that outline the cost of IV therapy sessions and any additional fees upfront, allowing you to budget accordingly.

5. Convenient locations and hours

Consider the accessibility of the provider’s facilities, including their locations and operating hours. You want a provider that is open seven days a week so you can get your drip when you need it most.

6. Client reviews and testimonials

Research client reviews and testimonials to gauge the experiences of others who have received IV therapy from the provider.

7. Collaboration with healthcare professionals and in-depth analysis

Look for providers who work with doctors and nutritionists for integrated care and offer DNA testing for personalised treatment.

8. Emergency protocols

Although IV nutrition therapy is considered safe, some clients may experience adverse reactions which is why the provider needs to equipped with emergency medical supplies and protocols.

If you have any medical conditions, remember to consult with your healthcare provider or the registered nurse before undergoing IV therapy to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your individual needs.

When you drip at one of the IV Bar branches, you can rest assured that you are receiving the safest, medically approved and effective vitamin drips, in a comfortable lounge environment, administered and monitored by registered nurses, at affordable excellent prices, so that you will look, feel and perform better.

AGENT ORANGE

TELLING HISTORY IN FASHION

WHEN INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED NIGERIAN FASHION DESIGNER ADEBAYO OKE-LAWAL FIRST CAME UP WITH THE IDEA THAT WAS TO BECOME HIS FASHION BRAND, ORANGE CULTURE, HE WANTED TO ENSURE THAT THE DESIGN REFLECTED BOTH HIS FASHION AND HIS LIFE ETHOS. SINCE THEN, THE GLOBAL FASHION WORLD HAS JUMPED ONBOARD: THE BRAND HAS RECEIVED MASSIVE INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION, GETTING FEATURED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES, VOGUE WORLDWIDE, ELLE AND MARIE CLAIRE MAGAZINES AND ON CNN, MTV, AND MANY MORE. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO HEAR MORE ABOUT HIS PASSION.

Which core values and inspirations drive your design process?

At Orange Culture, it’s driven by vulnerability, storytelling, and a deep sense of advocacy. We use fashion as a medium to challenge toxic masculinity, promote mental health awareness, and embrace individuality. The Nigerian experience – its complexities, its beauty, its pain – constantly inspires us, and we translate that into pieces that speak truthfully and poetically to the times.

How does the aesthetic reflect the unique voice of your brand while ensuring it resonates with a global audience?

Our aesthetic is fluid, expressive, and rich in cultural references. We combine traditional Nigerian silhouettes and fabrics with contemporary tailoring and emotive narratives. While our stories are deeply rooted in African realities, the themes – identity, love, freedom, acceptance – are universal. This has allowed us to connect with global audiences without diluting our voice.

Looking ahead, which upcoming trends or technologies do you see as vital to shaping the future of your brand?

Sustainability and digital innovation are crucial. We’re exploring more sustainable production methods, reworking deadstock, and even digital fashion presentations. The intersection of fashion and mental wellness technology is something we’re also deeply interested in. This is about garments embedded with therapeutic or calming sensory design elements. Fashion can heal, and we want to push that conversation further.

Which collaborations or fashion shows have been impactful in your fashion career?

Partnering with Davido for Selfridges was a major moment. It merged music, culture, and fashion on a global platform. Our collaborations with Huawei, Remy Martin, Heineken and Jägermeister also allowed us to push storytelling through fashion beyond the runway, reaching new audiences through immersive campaigns and brand crossovers. Fashion Week showcases, particularly Lagos Fashion Week and our presentations through Fashion Scout at London Fashion Week, have been instrumental in sharing our narrative with international audiences.

How do you balance the creative freedom of individual design with the cohesive identity of your brand?

We stay grounded in our core mission: storytelling that speaks to identity, emotion, and culture. Every season, we give ourselves the freedom to

explore new ideas, but they always circle back to vulnerability, fluidity, and empowerment. Our visual language – layered textiles, soft tailoring, genderless forms – also keeps the Orange Culture DNA intact.

In which ways do you hope your designs will empower and inspire the wearer – upcoming designers and fashion enthusiasts, too?

Our designs are created to empower wearers to embrace their full identities – especially those who’ve been told to shrink themselves. We want people to feel “seen” in our pieces – bold, and unafraid.

As for upcoming designers and fashion enthusiasts, we’re passionate about creating space and guidance through Orange Mentorship, a platform we launched to support emerging creatives in Africa. It’s our way of passing the baton, helping others navigate the fashion industry while staying true to their voice. We want them to know that you don’t have to compromise your values or your story to succeed and go global.

Your three fashion best tips for a high fashion look?

1. Embrace emotional dressing.

2. Play with fluidity: Don’t be afraid to blur lines; mix elements, try bold colours, or layer unexpected textures.

3. Confidence in individuality: Wear your clothes with pride; your uniqueness is the luxury. IB

Winter is coming... BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM NOW

DON’T LET WINTER GET THE BEST OF YOU. ARM YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WITH EXPERT TIPS ON FLU SHOTS, HEALTHY HABITS, AND SUPPLEMENTS TO KEEP YOU FIGHTING FIT.

With winter knocking at our door, it’s time to give your immune system a little extra TLC. “As the influenza (flu) season approaches, it is important to take steps to strengthen our immune systems to reduce the risk of getting sick by preparing the body to fight off infections,” says Mmanoko Maduane, pharmacist and clinical care manager at Medipost Pharmacy.

Start with the flu vaccine

“Prevention is better than cure,” Maduane explains. “Vaccines offer proven protection, building immunity against the most recent flu strains for the upcoming season.” So, roll up your sleeve and get that jab – ideally before the season kicks off. Just don’t book it while you’re already feeling under the weather. If you’ve been ill, check in with your pharmacist or GP about when it’s safe to get vaccinated.

Eat the rainbow

A strong immune system starts on your plate. “A balanced and nutrient-rich diet is fundamental to supporting a robust immune system,” says Maduane. Think plenty of colourful fruit and veg (the green leafy kind are super important, too), good proteins, and healthy fats. Foods rich in vitamin C, D and zinc, such as citrus, spinach, oily fish, garlic and ginger, are top picks. And don’t forget to hydrate! Aim for six to eight glasses of water a day.

Move your body

Regular exercise isn’t just good for your mood –it’s an immune booster too. “Exercise improves circulation, allowing immune cells to move freely in the body,” Maduane explains. Try for 150 minutes of moderate movement each week. That’s just over 20 minutes a day – totally doable.

Consider supplements

Struggling to get all your nutrients through food? Supplements can help. Maduane recommends daily doses of vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and B-complex vitamins, “as taken in consultation with your pharmacist or treating doctor,” she reminds us. Probiotics also play a role by supporting gut health, which in turn supports your immune function.

This winter, a few simple tweaks can go a long way to helping your immune system stay strong, so you can spend less time sniffling and more time snuggling. IB

WHY EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT HYROX

FITNESS, FUN, AND LOTS OF SWEATY SLED PUSHING! HYROX IS THE LATEST FITNESS TREND TAKING SOUTH AFRICA BY STORM. BUT WHAT MAKES IT SO ADDICTIVE?

If your idea of a good time includes sprinting a kilometre and then immediately hurling yourself into burpee broad jumps before repeating the cycle seven more times, then congratulations, HYROX might just be your sport.

But what exactly is HYROX, and why are South Africans suddenly swapping Saturday brunch for sandbag lunges?

We turned to Vicky MacIntosh, HYROX Ambassador, Pro Athlete, PUMA Athlete, and owner of The Yard Athletic, to break it down for us.

What on earth is HYROX?

“HYROX is an indoor fitness race for time that combines running with functional workout stations,” Vicky explains. Think of it as a mash-up between a HIIT class and a half marathon, but indoors, with less spandex and more sled pushing.

The race includes 8 x 1km runs, each followed by a brutal-butbrilliant station: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls.

It all kicked off in Germany in 2017, thanks to Christian Toetzke and Olympic legend Moritz Fürste, who wanted to create a standardised race that was accessible to athletes of all fitness levels.

Why Vicky signed up

“I have been an endurance athlete from a very young age, and I’ve especially loved running,” says Vicky. “So the transition from other functional fitness competitions to this endurance sport was easy for me.”

Unlike CrossFit-style events that are constantly varied, HYROX is fixed. Same structure, same stations, same glorious suffering. “I was looking for something that was more set and standard,” she says. HYROX delivered.

How do you train without burning out?

Let’s be honest… this is not your average gym circuit. But the beauty of HYROX is that it’s built for everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes, with the right training and support.

“A big consideration when training for HYROX is where your running is at,” says Vicky. “A lot of people coming to HYROX need to first focus on slowly building up running tolerance and a solid aerobic base.”

Why South Africa’s HYROX scene is heating up

South Africa might be a recent addition to the HYROX world, but it’s already making waves.

“What sets HYROX South Africa apart from other races is its strength of community,” says Vicky. “People from all walks of life, especially since South Africa is so beautifully diverse, can come together on race day with a common goal, and that is to make life better through fitness.”

one very clear piece of advice: “Firstly, sign up to that race.”

“Watch how your motivation and drive goes up and you start to make healthy lifestyle choices,” she promises. From there, focus on gradually building up your running tolerance and strength.

“Join the HYROX community and get guidance from an experienced coach or personal trainer,” says Vicky. “You don’t have to be super fit to start, but you do have to start.” IB

And while the race day crowd can get a tad chaotic, Vicky insists it works. “It’s mind-blowing how that creates unity.”

Here’s how to join the madness

Intrigued? Good news: getting involved is easier than you’d think.

“HYROX South Africa have 100+ affiliated gyms across the country that offer HYROX training,” says Vicky. Just head to their website, find your nearest facility, and prepare to meet a gang of equally sweaty legends. “Joining one of these gyms will get you involved with a community where everyone is chasing a common goal,” she says. “This unity uplifts everyone’s drive and motivation to be better and live a healthy lifestyle.”

New to fitness? Don’t sweat it (yet)

For anyone just dipping a toe into functional fitness, Vicky has

Healthy swaps for junk food cravings

(THAT ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD)

DITCH THE JUNK AND SATISFY YOUR CRAVINGS WITH HEALTHY SWAPS THAT ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD. FROM CHOCOLATE TO CRISPS, DISCOVER CLEVER ALTERNATIVES THAT’LL KEEP YOU ON TRACK WITHOUT SACRIFICING FLAVOUR.

We’ve all been there: that 3pm slump hits and suddenly, a muffin the size of your head is calling your name. Or after dinner, the fridge starts whispering sweet nothings about ice cream. But what if you could satisfy those cravings and keep things healthy(ish)?

Mico Price, a registered dietician practising at Netcare Sunward Park Hospital, shares some smart, simple swaps for common cravings and they’re seriously doable.

Craving chocolate?

“Probably the first one that comes to mind is chocolate,” says Mico. “You can try switching out your milk chocolate for a dark chocolate, but that doesn’t always hit the sweet spot we all love.” Instead, try two to three pitted dates stuffed with a little almond or peanut butter. “It’s naturally sweet, energy-boosting and satisfying,” Mico says. Another option? Apple slices with nut butter – crunchy, sweet and ohso-good.

Teatime treats feeling too indulgent?

Mico notes that baked goods like muffins and rusks are often more about the ritual than the actual hunger. “Try something lighter, like a piece of fruit with yoghurt or a small bran muffin instead of a large chocolate chip one.”

Dreaming of something creamy?

Step away from the tub of ice cream.

“Greek yoghurt with chopped nuts, seeds, pitted dates and a sprinkle of cinnamon is a lovely alternative.” Mico suggests. You could add some berries too. Chia pudding is another great option – trendy for a reason, it’s nutritious and hits that comfort note.

Need a salty crunch?

“Crisps are a big one,” says Mico. “Try air-popped popcorn seasoned with a little salt or some baked pretzels instead.”

Cravings aren’t just about food. “Cravings for junk food are more than just a lack of willpower,” Mico explains. Hormones, blood sugar dips, stress and even clever marketing all play a role. Her advice? Eat small, regular meals to keep blood sugar stable, focus on whole foods with protein, fibre and healthy fats, and find non-food ways to manage stress (think: walks, yoga, a good laugh).

And when the Friday night takeout urge hits, go homemade. Swap fried chips for air-fried sweet potato fries, make burgers with lean mince and wholewheat buns, or build your own wrap with loads of veggies and a dollop of hummus. “The air fryer has officially become every home chef’s best friend,” Mico laughs. THE ALL-NEW RENAULT DUSTER:

A Bold Leap into the Future

YOUR FRIENDLY INBOUND SA TEST DRIVER IS BACK, TESTING AND REVIEWING SOME OF THE NEW (OR OLD) VEHICLES THAT YOU LOVE. ALLOW ME TO TAKE YOU ON A JOURNEY OF INNOVATION AND DESIGN.

ntroducing the all-new Renault Duster, which marks the significant evolution of a model that’s been the choice of adventure-seeking drivers for over a decade. While previous generations of this vehicle were known for their rugged utility, this third generation cutie redefines the Duster, adding modern flair and fresh engineering, and raising eyebrows about its trajectory in the competitive SUV market.

Statement visuals

One of the most striking features of the new Duster is its sleek new form. Gone are the days of “boxy lines”. In its place is a contemporary

silhouette that commands attention – even to the extent of the Renault branding on the grille, the lettering of which is now elongated, forging a visual connection with the new Y-shaped LED headlights and delivering an elegant yet assertive front-end design.

But wait – that’s not all: the rear design showcases hidden door handles seamlessly integrated into the C-pillars, adding to the leaner, more streamlined aesthetic. Sustainability takes centre stage, too, as plastic cladding is crafted from recycled materials, appealing to eco-conscious consumers.

The Duster’s dimensions have changed, slightly, becoming longer and wider while maintaining its height, which results in a spacious interior that won’t compromise urban manoeuvrability.

A techie driver’s dream

When I first got into the Renault Duster, I was greeted by an array of modern tech. A standout feature for me is the 10.1inch OpenR multimedia system which integrates both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity. Stylish Y-shaped air vents and a fully digital instrument cluster elevate the user experience.

Practical enhancements like a wireless smartphone charger and a new E-shifter gear lever for automatic variants marry functionality with aesthetics. But despite this evolution in design and tech (here the fab new the Multiview camera system deserves special mention), the Duster maintains its tough, rugged character, striking a balance between comfort and durability that long-time fans will appreciate.

Petrol power unleashed

powertrains. Two turbocharged petrol engines are on offer: a 1.3-litre four-cylinder unit delivering 113 kW and 250 Nm of torque, and a mild hybrid 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine producing 96 kW and 230 Nm. The former pairs with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the latter features a six-speed manual, incorporating a 48V battery to boost fuel efficiency. Additionally, it boasts a commendable towing capacity of 1 500 kg, making it versatile for various lifestyles.

On- and off-road performance

Built on Renault’s CMF-B platform, the Duster combines modern engineering with driving pleasure. The upgraded chassis enhances stability and ride comfort on various terrains. On paved roads, the vehicle feels composed and well-balanced, while it impressively absorbs any bumps on gravel surfaces, allowing adventurous drivers (like myself) to confidently channel their inner Giniel de Villiers.

You’re probably wondering if its Diesel or petrol? The Duster now exclusively offers petrol

Testing the Duster on a gravel road near Malmesbury, I was awe-struck by its capabilities, even more so when tackling the sandy slopes of the Atlantis Dunes outside Cape Town. With the tyre pressure deflated a bit, the 4WD locked in

and electronic aids turned off, the SUV ascended effortlessly. This level of off-road competency, paired with a ground clearance of 217mm, guarantees plenty of opportunities for adventure.

What does it cost, and where can I get one?

The new Renault Duster range comes in three trims, two Zen and an Intens. Prices start at R489 999 for the Duster 1.3T EDC Zen, and go up to R549 999 for the Duster 1.2T MT 4WD MHEV. Each purchase includes a three-year/45 000km service plan and a five-year/150 000km warranty, providing peace of mind for potential buyers.

Overall, the all-new Renault Duster offers an exciting blend of style, technology, and performance. This vehicle has truly set the stage for a new chapter in its storied legacy. Until our next drive, Ciao! IB

AFRICA DESIGNING THE FUTURE

OF AFRICAN DESIGN

FROM UPCYCLED TEXTILES TO SPACE-SAVING FURNITURE, AFRICAN DESIGNERS ARE LEADING THE CHARGE IN SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION. WE SPOKE TO REFORM STUDIO AND CHARLES O JOB ABOUT THE FUTURE OF DESIGN AND ITS POTENTIAL FOR GLOBAL IMPACT.

When it comes to innovation with heart and heritage, African design is having a serious moment – and it’s about time. This year, Decorex Africa’s Designers of the Year are leading the charge: Reform Studio, the Egyptian pioneers of sustainable textiles, and Charles O. Job, the Nigerian-born architect, designer, and all-round visionary. You’ll find both names at Decorex Cape Town (5-8 June) and Joburg (24–27 July), where their ‘Body of Work’ presentations form part of the Future Talks 2025 programme – an exciting opportunity to discover the ideas, aesthetics, and philosophies shaping the continent’s design story.

We caught up with the designers to find out what’s hot, what’s meaningful, and where African design is heading next.

Sustainability isn’t a trend – it’s a legacy

“Long before the world went green,” say the team at Reform Studio, “Africa had already embraced sustainability. Conscious use and reuse were simply part of life.” Today, African designers are elevating these age-old principles, turning upcycled waste into desirable objects with serious style – like Reform’s own Plastex, a textile made from discarded plastic bags. “Sustainability can be both innovative and beautiful,” they add. “It’s not just a mission – it’s a heritage we’re continuing.”

Charles O. Job agrees, but with a pragmatic twist: “Good design should solve real problems,” he says. “We need space-saving, ergonomic, long-lasting furniture that minimises waste. Sustainability and functionality should go hand in hand.”

Made in Africa, for the world

There’s a clear call from both designers to recentre production on the continent. “We’ve got the skills, the traditions, and the talent,” says Charles. “Let’s make it here and sell it everywhere.” That means creating jobs, boosting economies, and anchoring African design in its rightful place on the global stage.

But local doesn’t mean insular. Charles advocates for continental collaboration, too: “Why not set up cross-border creative hubs where ideas and manufacturing capacity are shared?” It’s a compelling vision of a pan-African design economy – vibrant, connected, and self-sufficient.

Design as storytelling

“Design speaks,” says Reform Studio. “Whether you’re Arab, African, European or Japanese – design communicates culture, function, and emotion.” For them, design is a universal language, a bridge between tradition and modernity. Through textiles, furniture, and craft, African designers are reclaiming and reimagining heritage stories – weaving the past into the present.

Charles takes it further: “Tradition is important, but we can’t get stuck in it. Leopard-skin prints and tribal motifs aren’t enough anymore. Let’s use tradition as the launchpad, not the limit.”

The joy of craft – with a modern twist

The revival of traditional techniques (think hand-weaving, dyeing, and carving) is gaining momentum. “We’re not just preserving the past,” says Reform Studio, “we’re fusing it with fresh ideas.” It’s this interplay of old and new that gives African design its distinctive energy.

Visually, the continent’s designers continue to dazzle. Bold colours, geometric patterns, and eye-catching contrasts are not just aesthetic choices – they’re declarations of identity. “Colour and pattern are a kind of power,” Reform explains. “They’re how we express spirit and story.”

But a quieter movement is rising too: Afrominimalism. “There’s strength in simplicity,” says Reform. “We’re seeing clean lines, natural materials, and a refined approach that still honours heritage.” It’s less about excess, more about essence.

Facing the future

“Good design should do more than look good,” says Charles. “It should be smart, inclusive, and globally relevant.” For him, Africa’s design future lies in problem-solving with beauty – furniture that adapts, lasts, and serves diverse needs. And most of all, it should be future-focused.

“Tradition is a great starting point,” he says, “but we need to be forward-thinking. What if we designed for circular economies? What if we created with climate in mind? We should always be asking: what else could we do, and how else could we be doing it?”

African design is dynamic, daring, and deeply rooted, but it’s also evolving fast. Whether you’re drawn to bold prints, sleek minimalism, sustainable innovation or community-focused craftsmanship, there’s something to love (and learn from) in the continent’s creative wave. And with talents like Reform Studio and Charles O. Job leading the way, the future not only looks bright, but brilliantly designed. IB

PIKETBERG

LOCATED LESS THAN TWO HOURS FROM CAPE TOWN, THE PICTURESQUE TOWN OF PIKETBERG IS SET AT THE FOOT OF THE PIKETBERG MOUNTAIN RANGE, SURROUNDED BY WHEAT FIELDS, VINEYARDS, AND INDIGENOUS FYNBOS. ESTABLISHED IN 1840, ITS STUNNING NATURAL BEAUTY, RICH HISTORY, VICTORIAN ARCHITECTURE, AND LOCAL WINE AND ART SCENE ARE WHAT DRAW VISITORS TO THE TOWN.

Laid-back luxury is design

NATURE MEETS INNOVATIVE DESIGN IN THIS BEAUTIFUL HOME ON CAPE TOWN’S ATLANTIC SEABOARD.

Design Company

ARRCC has re-envisioned this home at the foot of Lion’s Head, on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. Their new design retained the existing footprint but remodelled the envelope and the interior to create a flowing, open-plan arrangement connecting the gardens and terraces to panoramic ocean views. A new, undulating cast in-situ concrete roof was added over the main living space, floating on a steel frame above highlevel windows that wrap around all four sides.

The house consists of two main wings: the living and entertainment areas and the sleeping quarters. The top level has the most impressive sea views and includes the main living spaces. Open-plan lounge and dining areas flow out onto a terrace through floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The lower level accommodates three guest bedrooms, staff quarters, a gym, a study, a games room, and another lounge that opens seamlessly onto the pool terrace. The main bedroom occupies the upper level of the second wing.

From the street, there is only a tantalizing glimpse of the sculptural form of the roof visible beyond the entrance. This concrete shell’s curvaceous, billowing shape takes inspiration from the waves of the ocean and the mountains behind the house, but it also has a practical rationale. Internally, the ceiling “pushes up” above clerestory windows to frame views of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head above and behind the house.

To the front, it rises to scoop in expanses of sky. These focal points enhance the home’s connection to its beautiful natural setting and draw natural light deep into its interior. Similarly, the roof of the master bedroom in the adjacent wing has been peeled back and lifted upwards to capture the views.

The upstairs living space has been transformed into a light, transparent, pavilion-like structure

flooded with natural light and fresh air, orientated to connect with the garden at the back of the house and allowing views of the sea to flow through the interiors. Perforated sliding metal screens on the façade shelter the interiors from direct sunlight when necessary, scattering dappled patterns of light and shadow across the interior.

A winding “orange peel” staircase mediates the connection between the living and bedroom wings while creating a sculptural architectural element at the entrance. A restrained and consistent palette of natural materials has been applied throughout the interiors, creating a tactile but neutral backdrop to enhance the colour pop the views of the landscape provide. Light oak panelling on ceilings, walls, and floors provides softness and warmth, while exposed concrete

elements provide a gritty contrast, and Cape Granite resonates with the mountainside setting.

ARRCC’s intervention dramatically enhances this home’s relationship with its setting, and the voluptuous architectural form of the new roof expresses its exuberant new spirit.

The entrance to the home is on the top level, featuring materiality that will patina over time. The spiral staircase connects the two main levels and is situated to the right of the entrance.

A spiral “orange peel” staircase connects the living and bedroom wings while simultaneously creating a sculptural architectural element that incorporates a custom-designed light pendant which floats at different levels.

The upstairs living space has been transformed into a light, transparent, pavilion-like structure flooded with natural light and fresh air, orientated to connect with the garden at the back of the house and allowing views of the sea to flow through the interiors.

The main kitchen overlooks the back of house pool and boasts surrounding views of the ocean beyond. At the back of the kitchen, lies the outside garden, nestled into the mountains.

A HELDERBERG GETAWAY

FRAMED BY THE MOUNTAINS AND TUCKED AWAY IN THE HELDERBERG WINELANDS, ERINVALE HOTEL AND SPA WELCOMED ME WITH POSTCARD-WORTHY VIEWS AND CRISP FRESH AIR THAT HAD ME INSTANTLY EXHALING ALL THE WEEK’S ACCUMULATED STRESSORS.

From the get-go, I was spoilt. Everything had been set up to my every preference, and it felt like the kind of place that just seems to get you. At reception, I was warmly welcomed by the lovely Erinvale team before being shown to my Premium Room. A short stroll from the front desk led me past lush greenery and chirping birds, and I could already smell the lavender before I saw the bushes lining my path. Nature was putting on a show.

Opening the door to my room, I had a full-on wow moment. “Oh, my goodness – what?!” I gasped. It was everything: clean, classy and just the right kind of cosy. The ground floor Premium Rooms (19 in total) each come with a patio facing either the garden, courtyard, or spa – ideal for a morning coffee, a quick scroll, or that wind-down glass of wine.

The rooms are a stone’s throw from the historic Cape Dutch Manor House, home to three on-site restaurants: Stefan’s, the Magnolia Social Dining Lounge, and the Oak Terrace and Bistro. Each brings its own flavour (literally), whether you’re after fine dining or a chilled bite.

Travelling with kids? There are interleading rooms that are perfect for families wanting to explore the winelands without sacrificing safety, comfort, style, or good food.

And that king-sized bed? Let me just say it nearly swallowed me whole in the best way possible. Between the 100% goose down duvet, feather-soft pillows, and mattress toppers, I melted into the bed. The Sanders 600-thread count cotton linen didn’t hurt either. Honestly, I slept like royalty.

Next up was the spa. I’d booked a treatment at the newly reimagined Erinvale Spa (unveiled in December 2024) and was met by my therapist, Jade. She gave me a full tour of the space: steam and sauna rooms, a nail studio, and four treatment rooms that were calling my name.

I opted for the 60-minute Bella Baci Massage – a mix of hands-on therapy and silicone cup technique for deep muscle relaxation. Jade let me choose a treatment oil by scent alone, which made the whole experience feel personal and intuitive. “You probably spend most of your day sitting,” she guessed. She was spot on — and she knew exactly how to work out the tension. I left that room feeling lighter and more relaxed than I had in ages.

Afterwards, I kicked back next to the heated pool at the Jasmine Terrace with a colourful mezze platter: hummus, olives, sundried tomato, pesto, fresh veg, berries, and gluten-free crackers. A solid, feel-good lunch.

Later that evening, I headed to the Magnolia Social Dining Lounge for dinner and tucked into a rib-eye steak with fries. For a more laid-back experience, this spot offers relaxed dining without compromising on flavour.

Before heading to bed, I caught a quick tour with Hanno, who showed me around the conference rooms and other room types –Suites, Luxury Rooms, Classic Rooms and Loft Rooms — each with their own charm. Bonus tip: the restaurants are open to the public too, so locals can enjoy the vibe without booking a stay.

Breakfast the next morning at the Oak Terrace sealed the deal for me. The omelette? Top-tier. I didn’t want to leave. Between the friendly service, good food, and total relaxation, I’ll definitely be making my way back to Erinvale Estate Hotel and Spa – sooner rather than later. IB

Chad Jones’s

TURKISH DELIGHT

TURKEY IS A DESTINATION THAT ENCHANTS VISITORS WITH ITS RICH, TUMULTUOUS HISTORY, PICTURESQUE ANCIENT LANDSCAPES, AND DELECTABLE CUISINE. CONTENT CREATOR CHAD JONES RECENTLY TRAVELLED THERE, EXPLORING THE WONDERS OF CAPPADOCIA, THE CITY ANCIENT CAPPADOCIANS CARVED OUT OF THE MOUNTAINS TO ESCAPE PERSECUTION. CHAD DOCUMENTED HIS JOURNEY ON HIS SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM, @CHAD_13JONES, AND CHATTED TO US ABOUT HIS INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE.

Turkey is a dream destination for many travellers. What made it a must-visit for you?

Turkey has always been on my travel bucket list! As a child, I would see the famous hot air balloon rides over the centuries-old ‘mountain’ city’ of Cappadocia, and I always dreamed of experiencing them in person. Plus, I’m a huge foodie, and Turkey is famous for its diverse and incredible cuisine. When I got the opportunity with Turkish Airlines, I jumped at it.

What was the most surprising thing about Turkey?

I was shocked by how much it snowed! I was not expecting that at all. Flying over the snowcovered landscapes gave me an entirely new perspective on the country’s beauty.

Cappadocia is one of the most photographed places in the world. Did it live up to your expectations? Honestly, the photos do not do it justice! Seeing Cappadocia in person is breathtaking. The atmosphere and surroundings are just beyond words—something you must experience to truly understand. Turkish Airlines made the journey there seamless, and I was blown away from the moment I arrived.

What is the one experience in Turkey that you think is a must-do?

The hot air balloons in Cappadocia! Even though I did not get to do it myself, because of the weather conditions, I know it is an unforgettable experience. Hopefully, next time I fly with Turkish Airlines, I will get to tick this off my bucket list!

As a foodie, what was your biggest culinary highlight?

The döner kebabs and koftas absolutely incredible! Even the meals on Turkish Airlines reflected the country’s rich food culture, so my culinary journey started the moment I boarded my flight.

Where is the best spot for a golden-hour photo in Cappadocia?

From where I have been, I would say the best place is Yank Evleri, the hotel we stayed at. The view at golden hour is just magical! You get this dreamy, postcard-worthy scene – something I

first saw in travel photos and got to experience firsthand thanks to Turkish Airlines.

What was the biggest cultural impression the country left on you?

The people! They were so friendly and helpful –it really made the experience even more special. From the airport staff to the locals in every city I visited, there was such a warm and welcoming energy.

If you could bring one thing back home from Turkey, what would it be?

Definitely the koftas! I wish I could have brought some home with me – but at least Turkish Airlines’ in-flight meals made sure I had an incredible food experience even on my journey back.

Any funny moments from your trip?

I was following a fellow creator, thinking she knew where she was going. Turns out she had already lost the group! We both got lost, and they had to send a search and rescue team for us. It was wild! Luckily, we made it back just in time to enjoy another incredible meal.

What is the one thing you would do differently if you visited Turkey again?

I would fly Business Class with Turkish Airlines again – it was an amazing experience. The comfort, service, and food were top tier. And I would make sure to try even more local food spots once I land!

Chad’s top travel tips:

• Plan your Cappadocia experience in advance Cappadocia is famous for its hot air balloons, but weather conditions can sometimes cause cancellations. If this happens, have a backup itinerary ready. “I didn’t get to do the balloon ride because of the weather, but the landscapes alone were worth the trip!” Chad advises booking the balloon ride for your first morning, so you have backup days if needed.

• Indulge in the local Turkish cuisine

Turkey is a food lover’s paradise! From döner kebabs to koftas, every meal is an experience. “Even the food on Turkish Airlines felt like an introduction to Türkiye’s rich flavours,” Chad says. Be sure to visit local spots and try traditional dishes like Menemen (Turkish scrambled eggs) and Baklava.

• Stay at a Caves Hotel in Cappadocia

Cappadocia’s cave hotels offer an immersive experience. Chad recommends Yank Evleri, where the sunset views are breathtaking. “Golden hour at the hotel was magical – it’s the perfect place to get that postcard-worthy shot!”

• Capture the best moments at Sunrise and Sunset Cappadocia’s landscapes are stunning at any time, but sunrise and sunset provide the best lighting for photography. “Even without the balloons, the scenery at sunrise is breathtaking!”

• Explore beyond Cappadocia

While Cappadocia is a must-visit, cosmopolitan Istanbul and the terraced city of Pamukkale, renowned for its thermal springs since ancient times offer unique experiences too. “Next time, I’d love to explore more of Turkey beyond Cappadocia!”

• Engage with the local culture

The Turkish people are known for their warm hospitality. “Everyone was so friendly and helpful - it made my trip even more special,” Chad shares. Learning a basic Turkish phrase such as Teşekkür ederim (thank you) can go a long way!

• Fly with Turkish Airlines for a seamless journey Turkey is best experienced when the journey starts in comfort. Turkish Airlines’ Business Class offers a luxurious experience, from gourmet meals inspired by traditional Turkish cuisine, to spacious seating with good leg-room, and exceptional service. “The hospitality on board was unreal,” Chad shares. “Flying Business Class made the journey as exciting as the destination itself!” IB

Fallin’ Into You

A THRILLING ESCAPE TO THE “SMOKE THAT THUNDERS”

VIC FALLS IN MAY REVEALS A HOST OF CHARMS OTHERWISE MISSED IN THE THRONG OF HIGH SEASON.

It takes less than two hours from OR Tambo International Airport to escape to the magnificent Victoria Falls with Fastjet, a multi-award-winning African value airline operating daily between South Africa and Zimbabwe. We were travelling in the dry season, which is between May and October, and were surprised at how parched the landscape seemed. But don’t worry, that’s part of the charm of the

place, and it’s still totally worth a visit. You feel immersed in the “real” Africa in the dry season.

At Victoria Falls International Airport we were given an uproarious welcome by traditional dancers. Zimbabwe has a diverse cultural heritage and it set the tone for what turned out to be an awe-inspiring trip. Driving through the grasslands of Hwange National Park on the way to our

accommodation, the fabulous Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, the excitement was palpable.

Once there, we were welcomed with a refreshing drink to help us unwind. The Lodge is built on a plateau overlooking the Zambezi National Park and offers sweeping views of the valley below and the wildlife that wander across it daily. Perched on seven levels rising high above the pristine bushveld, the design of the Lodge resembles an open-plan tree house. With 72 rooms catering to diverse guests – families, couples on a romantic getaway, solo travellers –the keynotes are luxury, style, comfort, and a relaxed atmosphere, which is just what you need after an exhilarating safari in the intense heat. There are several accommodation options to choose from, including the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, the Safari Club, the Safari Suites and the Lokuthula Lodges.

All rooms are fitted with air conditioners and mosquito nets for your comfort and peace of mind; the Reserve is in a medium-to-highlevel malaria area, so it pays to take precautions.

Most of the rooms at The Vic Falls Safari Lodge look out onto a nearby waterhole, and at dawn and dusk we watched in awe from our balcony as the diverse wildlife emerged to drink and play there. Immersive as the experience was, it also felt like a privileged peek into a universe where the animals reign supreme and we were merely observers. As I gazed across the untamed grasslands, the stillness seemed to seep into my soul.

The lodge offers two of Zimbabwe’s top restaurants, The Boma Diner and Drum Show and the a la carte MaKuwa-Kuwa restaurant. At The Boma we were once again welcomed in authentic African tradition under the starlit sky, and offered sarongs to drape over our shoulders against the chill. A bit of face paint in the traditional style got us in the mood. In certain

African cultures, these paints are made using natural pigments and are of cultural or symbolic significance.

The dining experience here was truly exceptional. The atmosphere felt elemental, with guests entertained by local drumming and singing throughout the evening. After a delicious African-style dinner that included staples like maize meal pap (isitshwala or sadza), a gorgeous vegetable relish, peanut butter stew and many more delectables, we were invited to join in on the drumming act, and were later served our choice of a final cocktail or glass of wine. For the adventurous, I’d suggest trying the local delicacy of mopani worms. I was surprised at their enjoyably chewy texture – plus, you’ll be issued with a certificate for your bravery!

MaKuwa-Kuwa restaurant, situated at the reception area of the Lodge, offers a more luxurious, fine-dining experience. Here you can count on delighting your taste buds with global flavours.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. During the dry season, the craggy heights of the Falls’s ancient rockface are more visible, as the Zambezi’s water levels drop significantly.

Other amenities at the Lodge include the beautiful clubhouse, where you can enjoy afternoon tea while gazing at the view, as well as several swimming pools for a refreshing morning or afternoon dip. The Victoria Falls Safari Spa is nestled in peaceful indigenous woodlands. It’s here where your inner African will emerge as you watch the occasional wild animal casually passing by while you’re serenely enjoying a massage before moving on to your next adventure.

An early evening a cruise on the Zambezi is a must. Witness the beauty of a true African sunset while enjoying a delish light meal and drinks, included in your price if you book your spot with Pure Africa on the Zambezi Explorer. This turned out to be pure bliss: a luxury cruise where you mingle with foreign nationals who are generally overcome at the beauty that is Africa –what’s not to be proud of?! The cruise adds a new level of sophistication to the river.

The ultimate highlight, of course, is the visit to the Falls itself, which is on the Zimbabwe/ Zambian border. It’s a 15-minute drive from the

As I gazed across the untamed grasslands, the stillness seemed to seep into my soul.

This allows for closer and more intimate views of the waterfall’s geological formations. It’s a sight almost as awe-inspiring as the waters thunderously tipping over the cliff and into the gorge below in the rainy season. This natural marvel attracts visitors from far and wide during both the wet and dry seasons.

The Lodge offers a complimentary ‘vulture culture’ experience below the deck of its Buffalo Bar at 1pm daily. Guests take a short walk down a bush path to view the vultures feeding. We were told that vulture populations are dwindling due to a variety of human created issues, including electrocution by power lines, the loss of a safe and available food supply, direct and indirect poisoning, and the use of their parts for traditional medicines. It’s a sobering experience.

Whether it’s in the dry or wet season, don’t delay. Plan your trip to Vic Falls! Either way, you’ll leave with a host of memorable experiences, not least, courtesy of the warm hospitality at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. IB

BUSINESS TRAVELLERS FACE challenges due to unreliable information

IMAGINE YOU’RE RUSHING TO CATCH A FLIGHT WHEN YOUR PHONE BUZZES. IT’S A VIDEO CALL FROM YOUR BOSS – SHE LOOKS LIKE HERSELF, SOUNDS LIKE HERSELF, AND EVEN SAYS HER TRADEMARK “MAKE IT HAPPEN” PHRASE. SHE NEEDS YOUR APPROVAL FOR AN URGENT PAYMENT. YOU TRUST HER COMPLETELY. BUT HERE’S THE CATCH – IT’S NOT REALLY HER. THAT VOICE? AI-GENERATED. THE VIDEO? A DEEPFAKE. AND THE PAYMENT? IT’S VANISHED INTO THE HANDS OF CYBERCRIMINALS.

This isn’t a sci-fi scenario – it’s a real and growing threat for business travellers. The Global Business Travel Association’s (GBTA) 2025 Risk Outlook ranks deepfake scams as one of the top five cybersecurity concerns, and with good reason. Business travellers are especially vulnerable. When you’re racing through airports, managing jet lag, and juggling work across multiple time zones, you’re a prime target. For criminals, it’s an ideal window of opportunity.

Mummy Mafojane, Productive Operations Leader at FCM Travel, the flagship corporate travel brand at Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) and the business travel partner of choice for large national, multinational and global corporations, emphasises that business hubs like South Africa are prime targets for cybercriminals. “Executives are constantly travelling, making split-second decisions, and moving large sums of money,” she says. “When you’re focused on closing a deal, cybersecurity might not be top of mind - and that’s exactly what criminals rely on.”

While deepfake scams make the headlines, cybercriminals play a much broader game. Take flight bookings, for instance. Cybercriminals can monitor your emails for phrases like “travel booking” or “payment details,” subtly altering your payment information before you even realise something’s wrong. By the time you catch on, your money is gone, along with a treasure trove of personal information. This could include passport details, credit card numbers, and corporate logins, giving hackers access to your company’s systems.

Juan Du Plooy, Information Security Lead at FCTG South Africa, warns against falling for cloned booking sites. “It’s like walking into a fake store,” he explains. “It looks legitimate, but you’ve just

handed your credit card to a fraudster.” This is where travel management companies (TMCs) shine. Their platforms are designed to detect suspicious activity, verifying every transaction to ensure security.

The risks don’t stop after booking. Hotel WiFi, airport USB charging stations, and even seemingly harmless emails from hotels can all be conduits for cyber threats. “Public Wi-Fi is particularly dangerous,” warns Du Plooy. “Hackers can replicate these networks, exposing your sensitive data.” IB

To stay safe, The Global Business Travel Association’s (GBTA) recommends essential protections:

• Mandate the use of encrypted devices and VPN connections for all travelling employees.

• Educate employees on cybersecurity awareness - specifically avoiding public Wi-Fi and using personal data instead.

• Encourage travellers to use privacy screen filters to prevent shoulder-surfing attacks in public places.

• Implement strong cybersecurity policies for managing work devices while travelling.

• Regularly simulate cybersecurity breach scenarios, ensuring employees know how to respond.

How South African influencers

ARE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF BRAND MARKETING

NOT TOO LONG AGO, BRAND MARKETING IN SOUTH AFRICA MEANT GLOSSY MAGAZINE ADS, CELEBRITIES ON TV, AND GIANT BILLBOARDS ALONG THE HIGHWAY. TODAY, THE STARS OF THE SHOW ARE CREATORS ARMED WITH SMARTPHONES, RING LIGHTS, AND CONTENT THAT CONNECTS.

What gives creators the edge over traditional ads? It comes down to trust. Audiences respond to people they connect with, not polished slogans. But trust doesn’t come easy. It’s earned through real connection and consistent, authentic storytelling.

For a brand, choosing the right creator is half the job done. When values align and content feels natural, audiences listen – and act. That’s the kind of influence that drives more than just likes.

According to the 2024 South African Influencer Marketing Benchmark Report (produced by the South African Council of Marketing in collaboration with Humanz), the local industry is now worth over R1.3 billion. Even better, 89% of marketers say creator-led campaigns bring in returns equal to, or better than, traditional advertising.

Creators are driving culture and conversion

Numbers aside, behaviour tells the full story.

A 2023 BrandMapp consumer survey found that 67% of South African Gen Z-ers have bought something because a creator recommended it. Content that feels personal, local, and relatable is making the difference.

Creators aren’t sticking to one lane any more, either. They’ve gone beyond beauty and fashion into spaces like finance, public health, education, and small business. They’re unpacking complex topics and turning them into snappy visual content that just works.

The key? Let creators be themselves. When brands offer creative freedom instead of strict scripts, the magic happens. That’s when content moves beyond engagement and builds loyalty.

The rise of the creator economy

The Humanz 2025 report unpacks the rapid growth of South Africa’s creator economy, offering more than just numbers. It’s packed with smart tools for marketers and creators alike.

• Smarter measurement: Success is now tracked by real results like conversions and retention, not just likes.

• Actionable insights: The report shows how many local creators are active and earning, thus helping both brands and creators make informed moves.

• Industry benchmarks: With data across 18 sectors, from fashion to fintech, strategy is no longer guesswork.

Most mentioned brands of 2024 So, which brands are getting the most love from creators?

• Dis-Chem Pharmacies

• Superbalist

• Clicks

• Cotton On

• Edgars

• Mr Price Fashion

• Ackermans

• Woolworths

• H&M

• Adidas

• Zara

• Takealot.com

• Shein South Africa

• Maybelline

• Foschini

• The Fix

• Essence Cosmetics

The biggest climber?

Shein took the top spot, showing just how strong fast fashion and online shopping have become in local influencer campaigns.

These results highlight the power of visual storytelling. Brands that work well in reels, GRWMs (Get Ready With Me’s), hauls, and tutorials naturally dominate. For marketers needing quick results, these are the spaces to watch.

What’s next?

For brands, now’s the time to collaborate with intention – using data, insight, and a deep respect for the creator’s voice. And for creators, this is the moment to understand your worth, know your data, and build smart partnerships.

The future of brand marketing in South Africa? It’s being shaped by storytellers who know how to make it real. IB

IN A CANDID CHAT WITH INBOUND SA, SHE OPENS UP ABOUT WHAT THE JOURNEY HAS MEANT TO HER, THE MOMENTS THAT MATTERED MOST, AND WHAT SHE HOPES THE UNIVERSITY CARRIES FORWARD AS SHE STEPS ASIDE.

As you prepare to step down, how are you feeling about this transition?

Change is an inevitable part of life. I have made optimal use of my time at UMP and contributed to the best of my ability. Now, the time has come to pass the baton, and I take comfort in knowing that, while I was at the helm, I led with dedication and gave my highest and best. The results speak for themselves.

There will only ever be one Founding ViceChancellor, and it has been a truly humbling experience to be part of this pioneering journey — luhambo lwemhlahlandlela. The opportunity to be a pioneer was fully embraced, and I approached it with commitment and care.

I was acutely aware of both the immense responsibility and the great privilege that came with being a founding leader of a newly established university. The enormity of that task never escaped me, and my dedication to this role remained unwavering.

It is often the case that leaders take the reins of established institutions. To start from scratch is a rare and cherished experience. Our task was to give South Africa a vision of what a postapartheid university could and should be. We were fortunate not to be burdened by the legacy of apartheid. Creating a new society demands new institutions that cultivate different habits and a new consciousness.

I believe we have set a benchmark — a yardstick by which future institutions will be measured. And the bar has been set high.

What moment or achievement stands out most from your time at UMP?

A number of achievements stand out. Growing the student body from 169 in 2014 to 11,800 a decade later has been a truly humbling experience. Equally gratifying has been the expansion of academic programmes — from just 3 in 2014 to 78 by 2025 — ranging from Higher Certificates to Doctoral Degrees, and aimed, as far as possible, at addressing the needs of the Mpumalanga Province.

A particularly meaningful recognition of my efforts was the decision by the institution to name the Library and Information Services Building The Thoko Mayekiso Library and Information Services Building. This was a deeply significant honour and validation.

The outstanding work of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator is another notable achievement, demonstrated by the excellent performance of our students in both national and international competitions.

UMP has also received an unqualified audit opinion (clean audits) from the External Auditors every year since its inception — a record that holds a special place in my heart.

How did you keep the university aligned with the changing higher education landscape?

Over the past 10 years, the University of Mpumalanga has been guided by UMP Vision 2022 and UMP Vision 2030: “To be an African university leading in creating opportunities for sustainable development through innovation.”

Our Mission is: “To offer high-quality educational and training opportunities that foster the holistic development of students through teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and engagement, in collaboration with strategic partners.”

The strategic goals and objectives of the University are aligned with local, provincial, national, and global priorities. As reflected in the Mission, the University of Mpumalanga is committed to the holistic development of students and to enabling them to realise their potential across the full spectrum of cognitive, social, aesthetic, physical, and personal dimensions — all in pursuit of democratic citizenship.

The crafting of the Vision was informed, among other influences, by the National Development Plan, Africa Vision 2063 (Agenda 2063), and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Our staff remain up to date with developments in their respective disciplines and professions through participation in national and international conferences, membership of professional bodies and associations, and engagements with key stakeholders such as government, industry, NGOs, and members of the community. The University also promotes life-long learning and continuing professional development among both its academic and support staff.

What growth or impact are you most proud of?

The impact of establishing a campus — from sodturning to the development of an iconic campus with state-of-the-art facilities, built on time and within budget — stands out as one of my proudest achievements. As the founding Vice-Chancellor, the monumental infrastructure left behind will serve as a lasting testament to my contribution.

I had the privilege of working with various teams and am deeply grateful to the women and men who were goal-oriented and created an environment in which the UMP community could thrive. A 21stcentury university is multifaceted and requires the careful integration of talent, time, and resources to come to fruition.

The students, who brought curiosity, vibrancy, enthusiasm, and vitality into the classroom, are especially worthy of recognition. Many were firstgeneration students who truly embraced the

new learning environment. Special recognition goes to the recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, whose outstanding performance has made them exceptional ambassadors for the University. These students form part of the original cohort who began their journey at undergraduate level and have since progressed to Master’s and Doctoral studies.

The UMP Choir, which has become formidable in its musical renditions, is another example of the excellence the University has nurtured.

How did you shape the university’s culture and values?

Values have served as the guardrails that ensured a sense of pride and belonging among staff and students, enabling us to collectively understand our purpose and what UMP expects from each of us. The seven values — Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Adaptability, Relevance, Respect, and Inspiration — were embedded into the institution’s operations and culture.

These values were kept alive by integrating them into key performance tasks. As part of the 360-degree performance assessment, Executive Management were expected to demonstrate clearly how these values were reflected in their work. We cascaded the values throughout the University by reinforcing their importance at every opportunity — through speeches, campus communications, and visible icons across campus.

When we celebrated our 10th anniversary, it was under the theme, “A Decade of Excellence”, a fitting tribute as we had achieved all the strategic objectives we’d set ourselves by consistently upholding the value of excellence.

Wearing T-shirts bearing the slogan “Love My Campus” played a significant role in encouraging pride in our surroundings, and fostering camaraderie that sustained the UMP community through both good times and challenges. A deep sense of identity and pride in being part of the UMP family began to emerge, as people increasingly aligned themselves with the institution’s culture.

By celebrating and reinforcing our values — through words and tangible actions — we shaped and strengthened the culture here. Rewarding performance, celebrating success, and motivating one another to be our best inspired us as a

community. We built self-confidence, nurtured self-esteem and mental resilience, modelled positive behaviour, and offered psychological support to both students and staff.

What role do you think UMP now plays in the region?

UMP holds pride of place in the hearts and minds of the people of Mpumalanga. Its offering of relevant programmes, such as Tourism, Hospitality Management, Agriculture, Nature Conservation, and Information Communication Technology, caters to a niche market in the Province of the Rising Sun.

The establishment of the Tfokomala Hotel and Conference Centre on campus ensures that students studying Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts are able to complete their Work Integrated Learning on-site. The hotel has hosted numerous conferences, with attendees from the other 25 universities in the country, thereby promoting travel and tourism within the province.

UMP has also forged a number of strategic partnerships within the region. Through these collaborations, the University is making a meaningful contribution to the socio-economic development of Mpumalanga.

What advice would you give your successor?

This is a sensitive question and may seem presumptuous. However, I would say that by bringing one’s unfettered imagination and cumulative experience to bear, new ideas can emerge and inspiration is often sparked.

Any final message for the UMP community?

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and for believing in my vision. The Mpumalanga Province and the UMP community have become a home away from home for me. Jealously guard this asset and ensure it continues to operate optimally. Great is the art of beginning – but greater still is the art of ending.

I would like to remind the UMP community of my Inauguration Speech in May 2015: “Pioneers have to build a firm foundation, mindful that what they are creating should be durable, marketable, sustainable and enduring. Generations yet unborn must find a thriving University, one they will be proud to join because we who pioneered it, laid a firm foundation, and got into this immense project with body, mind and soul.” These words spurred us on and proved to be remarkably prophetic. Love meets ambition:

HOW INTENTIONAL DATING IS HELPING PROFESSIONALS BALANCE CAREER AND CONNECTION

FORGET SWIPING FATIGUE – THIS PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN DATING PLATFORM IS PUTTING INTENTION, COMMUNITY AND MEANINGFUL CONNECTION BACK AT THE HEART OF ROMANCE.

In November 2023, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared loneliness a global health threat. Balancing a demanding career with a fulfilling personal life isn’t easy, and for many professionals, love often takes a back seat to the hustle.

Increasingly, success-driven individuals are realising that meaningful relationships don’t have to be sacrificed for ambition. In fact, intentionality – the same mindset used to achieve career goals – could be the key to deeper, more emotionally fulfilling connections.

“Prioritise meaningful connection the way you do your goals: be present, set boundaries, and communicate openly. Love doesn’t compete with success; it can actually strengthen it,” says Serisha Barat, co-founder of Boardroom, a proudly South African dating platform built for purpose-driven professionals.

Launched in September 2023, Boardroom is a curated dating app designed for ambitious individuals seeking genuine, meaningful relationships that align with their values and lifestyle. “For professionals, traits like

independence and ambition aren’t just desirable, they’re essential to building lasting, fulfilling relationships,” explains Serisha.

Every user is verified through LinkedIn, creating a trusted space for like-minded people who are serious about love and career. With all profiles manually reviewed, the platform ensures safety, authenticity, and a higher standard of dating – especially for those who find traditional apps uninspiring or unproductive.

Serisha knows the feeling all too well. “Even the thought of using a dating app left me exhausted,” she says. After navigating the challenges of building a startup while balancing an ambitious career, she noticed how she, and many professionals around her, struggled to find those meaningful connections. When her now co-founder and CTO, Wisani Shilumani, shared the idea for Boardroom, the vision instantly resonated with her.

From day one, the team made one thing clear: intention isn’t just a feature – it’s the foundation. “We noticed that a lot of platforms hide it in the fine print. For us, it’s the headline,” says Serisha. Every element of the app – from profile verification to thoughtful prompts – is designed to encourage presence and real connection.

“Boardroom doesn’t try to appeal to everyone, and that’s the point,” says Serisha. “While many dating apps chase numbers, Boardroom is all about quality over quantity. Exclusivity often gets mistaken for elitism. But what we’ve created is a curated, values-driven space – a dating experience that feels aligned with the way our users already live their lives.”

The app mirrors environments where professionals thrive: intentional, secure, and designed for meaningful interaction. And it’s working. In the first six months post-launch, three couples who had met on the platform had got engaged. Beyond the app, users are building a community – organising meetups, attending events, and turning digital matches into realworld relationships.

While Boardroom includes smart tech – from an AI dating coach to compatibility-based love letters – the emphasis remains on human connection.

For professionals, traits like independence and ambition aren’t just desirable, they’re essential to building lasting, fulfilling relationships.

“We see AI as a supportive tool, not a substitute for real interaction,” Wisani says. “That humanfirst energy is something we fiercely protect.”

So, what’s next for Boardroom? “We’d love to expand globally, but thoughtfully,” Serisha shares. “It’s not about chasing growth for growth’s sake. It’s about finding the right communities where our values resonate –where professionals are looking for love that’s as intentional as the lives they’ve built.”

In a dating world often ruled by speed and superficiality, Boardroom is offering something different: a slower, deeper, more deliberate kind of romance. And for those who don’t have time for anything less, it might just be the app they’ve been waiting for. IB

CHEF EBIE DU TOIT TALKS THE POT LUCK CLUB’S NEW CHAPTER AT THE PEECH HOTEL Flavour Fest!

CHEF EBIE DU TOIT IS NO STRANGER TO THE WORLD OF CULINARY EXCELLENCE AND, AS HEAD CHEF OF THE POT LUCK CLUB, JOHANNESBURG, HE’S ABOUT TO BRING HIS EXPERTISE TO A NEW, EXCITING CHAPTER AT THE PEECH HOTEL. KNOWN FOR HIS CREATIVE APPROACH TO FOOD, EBIE IS TAKING ON THE CHALLENGE OF MAINTAINING THE RESTAURANT’S REPUTATION FOR BOLD, ASIANINSPIRED SMALL PLATES WHILE EMBRACING A FRESH NEW SETTING. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THIS EXCITING MOVE AND WHAT DINERS CAN EXPECT FROM THE NEW LOCATION.

You’ve worked with many famous chefs. What’s one important lesson you’ve learned from Luke Dale Roberts that you use in your kitchen?

Consistency creates harmony. Whether it’s our dishes, impeccable service, or the overall experience, when everything and everyone is well organised in the kitchen, service flows smoothly and everything generally goes according to plan.

Is there a cooking technique or ingredient that has surprised you in your career, and how do you use it at The Pot Luck Club at The Peech Hotel?

The sous vide technique. It’s about cooking food very slowly in a vacuum-sealed bag immersed in warm water – the results are amazing! This method creates a juicier, more tender, colourful and flavoursome result than any other cooking technique I’ve seen. At Pot Luck Club we sous vide some of our proteins, including pork belly,

lamb and chicken, then we finish off with basting, grilling or searing for the final result. This gives incredibly pleasing results.

The menu is a crowd favourite! What’s the secret to making those Asianinspired small plates so unforgettable? Using the freshest, best-quality ingredients, and layering flavours in a subtle way until we reach the desired taste. The Pot Luck Club menu is classified into key flavour profiles such as salty, sweet, sour, and umami, and our menu plays with each of these to create some incredibly memorable dishes.

You’ve got two top chefs in the mix with you – Chefs Jason Kosmas and Luke Dale Roberts. How do you all keep the kitchen energy fresh, and who’s the biggest jokester?

Since Luke and Jason are based in Cape Town and I’m in Joburg, it’s not every day we are in the same kitchen space, but when we are, like for the upcoming launch of The Pot Luck Club at The Peech, we’ll all be in the kitchen together, it’s a great opportunity to collaborate, share ideas, tweak elements and refine our dishes before opening. Boss-man Luke takes the prize for biggest jokester, he loves being among us and inspiring his team; he balances working hard, then having a laugh together when the job is done.

Running things at a high-end spot must have its tough moments. What’s the biggest challenge, and how do you keep things running smoothly? Clear communication! In the kitchen everyone has their own special area or job, but it’s the coming together of all these different elements at exactly the right time that is so important to success. As a team, we get together for a briefing pre-service, during service the tough moments usually come in waves, so when the pressure is off, there’s time to joke and laugh a bit with the team. If all else fails, take a walk outside to calm yourself down!

Do you have a dish you love that you’d say is the must-try at the restaurant? What makes it your favourite?

Either the Peri Peri Chicken (tell me which South

African doesn’t love spicy flame-grilled chicken? it’s in our DNA!), or one of our Cape Malay-inspired dishes; for me this is a nod to my heritage and the flavours I grew up with.

If you were to create a dish that represents Johannesburg, combining local flavours with your style, what would it be, and why?

Probably a Kudu Tataki dish, marinated using a combination of African and Asian spices, then briefly seared over a very hot flame, before being cooled down quickly to keep the meat very rare. Kudu is lean and tender and has a lovely sweet, gamey flavour, which is delicious, and it’s something new and exciting for our international guests to enjoy too. IB

Serves: 4–6

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Cooking time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

For the avo hummus

• 1 avocado

• 400g tin chickpeas, drained

• 15ml (1 tablespoon) tahini (optional)

• 1 garlic clove, crushed

• 30ml (2 tablespoons) avocado oil (substitute with olive oil + extra)

• juice of 1 lemon, to taste

• salt and pepper

For the spicy tomato steak

• 300g beef sirloin steak

• 250g packet cherry tomatoes

• 30ml (2 tablespoons) red

SPICY TOMATO STEAK & AVO HUMMUS TOASTS

wine vinegar

• 15ml (1 tablespoon) chilli flakes

To serve

• 4–6 slices sourdough, toasted

• 1 avo, sliced

• handful basil

METHOD

1. For the avo hummus, blitz together all the ingredients until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.

2. For the spicy tomato steak, heat a large frying pan over high heat until smoking hot. Add a splash of extra oil and fry the steak for about 3 minutes on each side for medium rare, or until cooked to

your liking. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside for 5 minutes before thinly slicing.

3. Meanwhile, add the tomatoes to the hot pan with a splash of extra oil, vinegar, and chilli flakes.

4. Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid, and simmer for about 5 minutes or until the tomatoes start to burst. Season with salt and pepper. Take off the heat and mix through the steak strips (don’t leave them in the pan for too long—you don’t want to cook the steak further).

5. To serve, spread the toasts with avo hummus, top with the tomato steak mixture, avo slices, and basil.

Fierce, Fun + Fab

When change unfolds before your eyes, it’s aweinspiring. Ingie’s journey is one of courage and growth — she walked away from what no longer served her and stepped into a future filled with love, success, and strength. Watching her evolve into the powerful woman she is today has been truly inspiring.

Dear Self, Isn’t it wild how some of the strongest friendships show up when you least expect them? One minute you’re just going through the motions, and the next, you’ve found someone who becomes a rock in your life. That’s exactly how I feel about Ingie.

beautiful From to decisions

We’d known each other casually for years, but it wasn’t until one fateful evening (probably involving wine) that we really clicked. You know that moment when a casual chat shifts into something deeper? That’s when I knew: yep, this is the start of something amazing.

Now, let’s get to the juicy part: Ingie had been in a long-term relationship, all set for wedding bells, “Happily Ever After” Pinterest boards, and the whole shebang. But then, plot twist – Ingie had an epiphany that shook things up: the chapter was closed. Finito. Adios

It wasn’t easy, but the girl knew when to pull the plug. And

here’s where I come in as your classic Aries – a little too blunt and a lot too passionate. I said something I probably shouldn’t have: “Pack your bags and leave him”. Fast-forward 24 hours, and next thing I know, she takes that leap. She reclaims her power, her voice, her whole life.

But wait, it gets better. By leaving behind what wasn’t serving her, she made space for someone truly spectacular to walk into her life. And trust me, he’s not just a “good on paper” guy. Nope. Paul’s the real deal. Her family, friends, and even her cat, Winx (yes, her cat is basically royalty), all give him the thumbs-up. Ingie, my friend, you got the universe’s “good choice” stamp.

I’ve watched her bloom into this fierce, independent woman – someone whose quiet strength and laser focus make me want to step up my game every single day. And honestly, as someone who’s more of a “go-go-go” kind of person, I find myself secretly envious of her calm confidence. I mean, how does she make it look so easy?!

So, as we celebrate your birthday month (because, yes, this entire month is about you), just know you’re living proof that when you trust your gut, take risks, and kick fear to the curb, magic happens.

The Last Letters From Villa Clara

Phoebe’s beloved uncle, Bruce Cato, renowned copyist and restorer of the Old Masters, has died, leaving her his rambling villa in Tuscany where she’d spent many joyful holidays, as well as a unique puzzle to solve, the clues to which he had hidden in reproductions he’d left for her with a variety of people. It revolves around an incident in Italy in 1939 involving the love of Bruce’s life, Leonora Birch, an upper crust art dealer named Sir Edwin Viner, and what Bruce is certain is one of the “missing” Vermeers, Girl At A Desk, that he’d picked up for next to nothing at a Venetian Palazzo auction. Enjoyable enough, but the stilted dialogue was somewhat irritating, reminiscent of a bad 1930s movie. The saving grace for me was the motley cast of characters who all strove to transcend the limits of their “class”.
