THE MORE I GYM, THE MORE WEIGHT I GAIN

I HAVE BEEN A GYM JUNKIE FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. I HAVE ONE PROBLEM – THE MORE I GYM, THE MORE I EAT WHEN I FINISH MY SESSIONS. AT ONE POINT, I WEIGHED 106KG. BUT THAT ALL CHANGED.

People used to say that exercise is a lifestyle. I never really understood it until I left my former gym and joined F45, where they focus on functional training. The coaches here take a keen interest in what you eat.

At first, I struggled – an hour and 20 minutes of training, with running in between smaller sessions. I felt nauseous and kept looking at the door, wanting to run away. But I kept going. I changed my diet, cutting out potatoes, fizzy drinks, and unhealthy snacks during the week. Weekends were my days off.

One Friday evening, when I said no to pizza and opted for chicken and salad instead, my children looked at me, puzzled. Two months later, I weighed 88kg. One thing surprised me – the coaches advised me to eat rice. Huh? But it seems boxing coach Nicole Bessick agrees, as she mentions in our fitness feature in this issue. Rice, she says, is great for sustained energy.

Aside from Nicole’s boxing tips, this issue is also about “where are they now?” We feature Anthonie Bougas, who was a singer years ago but is now dedicated to inspiring young lives. We also caught up with supermodel Josie Borain and golfing legend Ernie Els to find out what they’re up to these days. Plus, we had the chance to review the final Quattroporte Trofeo – a pinnacle of luxury.

We hope you enjoy this issue.

Till next month!

THIS MONTH’S BURNING QUESTION…

Is duty-free always cheaper?

ANSWER:

Let’s be honest – we love a good shopping spree at duty-free. But it’s not always the best deal.

“Duty-free” simply means taxes won’t be collected; it doesn’t guarantee lower prices. In some countries, duty-free shopping offers excellent value, while in others, you might end up paying more than the highest retail prices back home. Know the costs before you go, or set yourself a budget and stick to it – wherever you’re shopping.

YOUR SHOCKING TRAVEL STORIES

DRUNK PASSENGER

Every so often we stumble upon a flight experience that feels like a scene from a film. This was one such experience. I was on a domestic flight and watched as a man made an absolute fool of himself. I also noticed the cabin crew patiently tolerating his antics. After the flight, he had to be escorted off the plane and onto the bus. Once aboard, he bellowed:

“Listen, everyone, I have an announcement to make! Be good to everyone in the world, and the world will be good to you!”

He received a round of applause, and with that, the bus drove off to the arrivals terminal. We, the passengers, were left with unexpected wisdom from a drunk man in a corduroy jacket.

DETAINED OVER A SMOKED CHICKEN WRAP

While flying to Detroit on Canada Air, I had a short layover in Toronto. Before departing, I decided to buy a chicken wrap from a takeaway at Gatwick so I’d have something to eat later.

At the automated immigration checkpoint in Toronto, I made the mistake of answering honestly when asked if I had any meat products. Suddenly, two officials appeared – the first humans I saw in Canada –and whisked me off to a small room. My luggage was retrieved from the connecting flight, my wrap was confiscated, and the interrogation began.

After two hours, I was finally informed that “smoked” chicken was, in fact, allowed into Canada, and my wrap was returned. By then, I was so HUNGRY that I ate it immediately and stomped out of my cell!

STRANDED ON AN ISLAND

The storm rolled in fast, turning the turquoise waters into a churning black abyss. Our tiny seaplane, meant to whisk

us away from Pemba Island, Tanzania, never arrived.

Stranded, we huddled in a crumbling beach hut as rain hammered the roof and wind howled through shattered windows. Supplies dwindled. The water tasted of rust, and food rotted in the humidity. At night, eerie wails echoed from the jungle, shadows shifting where none should be.

On the third day, a boat appeared on the horizon. We screamed, we waved – until we saw them: sunken eyes, silent faces.

DETAINED AT THE AIRPORT

Some time ago, I was in Lagos, Nigeria, for work. My visa allowed me to stay for 30 days. I booked my return flight to South Africa for the final day, but the flight was full, and I could only get one for the next day. Thinking it would be fine, I rebooked.

I was wrong.

At the airport, an official rudely informed me that I had overstayed by one day. He demanded a $200 fine, warning that if I didn’t pay, I would be detained. I was taken to a small, filthy office with no air conditioning.

With no cash on me, I had to call someone to bring the money. Within 30 minutes, they arrived; I paid, and I was released.

I have never prayed so much in my life as I did that day.

Q

TALENT, TUNES AND TEACHING:

Anthonie Bougas ON MAKING A DIFFERENCE

ANTHONIE BOUGAS IS A MULTIFACETED SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST AND ENTREPRENEUR KNOWN FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO MUSIC, TELEVISION PRODUCTION, AND EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT.

Anthonie, you’ve had a successful career in both music and entertainment. Can you share with us the key moments that shaped your journey?

A It began at the age of four when I discovered my passion for singing. Growing up in Durbanville, Western Cape, I was actively involved in sport: cross-country and hockey. But music was always my true calling. A significant turning point was participating in the reality talent show Supersterre as a teenager, which provided me with invaluable exposure and experience in the entertainment industry.

Q With ABS Productions and your music career, you’ve made a significant impact on the South African entertainment scene. What’s been the most fulfilling part

of this journey for you?

AEstablishing ABS Productions has allowed me to create and produce content that resonates with our diverse audience. Collaborating with talented individuals and witnessing the positive reception our projects got has been incredibly rewarding.

Q

Kleuterzone Groep van Skole has become a household name in South Africa. What inspired you to get involved in early childhood development, and what do you believe has been the key driver behind Kleuterzone’s recent growth and success?

A My involvement in early childhood development (ECD) stems from a deepseated belief in the power of education to

transform lives. By focusing on foundational learning, we aim to equip young minds with the tools they need for future success. The growth of Kleuterzone can be attributed to our dedicated team, innovative curriculum, and unwavering commitment to fostering a nurturing learning environment.

Q It’s clear that you care deeply about helping the youth. What are some of the ways in which ABS Productions and your work in the ECD space are providing opportunities for young people to thrive?

AAt ABS Productions, we prioritise projects that highlight young talent, offering them platforms to showcase their skills. Through Kleuterzone, we provide quality education that lays a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Additionally, we offer workshops and mentorship programmes designed to empower the youth and guide them towards realising their potential.

Q How important is it for you to give back and create opportunities for talented youth who might face financial challenges?

A Giving back is a cornerstone of my philosophy. Recognising talent and providing avenues for its development, especially for those facing financial constraints, is essential. Witnessing individuals flourish reaffirms the importance of supporting and nurturing emerging artists.

Q Your dedication to supporting the next generation of artists

is evident. How do you identify talent in young people, and what drives you to continue helping them overcome challenges in the industry?

AIt involves observing passion, dedication, and identifying that unique spark that sets an individual apart. My

motivation to assist young artists comes from my own experiences and the challenges I faced in the industry. By offering guidance and resources, I hope to ease their journey and help them navigate the complexities of the entertainment world.

Q Are there any exciting projects or initiatives on the horizon that will continue to impact both the entertainment industry and the development of young talent in South Africa?

ASeveral in the pipeline, including new productions aimed at showcasing young talent and educational programmes designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical industry experience. Sing in Harmonie will continue to grow as a platform, providing even more opportunities for school choirs to shine and for young people to develop their skills in a supportive, high-energy environment. These projects aim to provide comprehensive support to emerging artists and contribute positively to the South African entertainment landscape. IB

OG supermodel SOUTH AFRICA’S

ONCE A FASHION ICON GRACING THE COVERS OF MAGAZINES AND STRUTTING THE RUNWAY FOR DESIGNERS LIKE CALVIN KLEIN AND VALENTINO, JOSIE BORAIN NOW FINDS HERSELF IN A QUAINT VILLAGE IN THE SOUTHERN CAPE, EMBRACING A QUIETER, YET EQUALLY FULFILLING LIFE.

She ushered in a new era in fashion, becoming the poster child for a look that still dominates the world’s top runways and the pages of magazines today. In the ‘80s, the world truly belonged to Josie Borain. Hailed as SA’s first supermodel, apart from working on campaigns with Gianni Versace and Ralph Lauren, she even towered over two billboards in Times Square.

However, Josie’s life has taken a delightful

turn. In contrast to her jet-setting youth, she now finds herself in the quaint little village of Vermaaklikheid in the Southern Cape, where she continues to create magic as a celebrated photographer and business owner.

DLR: Did you always want to be a model, or was it something you stumbled into?

I never wanted to be a model as it was considered a lower-class kind of job. White

South Africa is very classist. Unfortunately, that’s the legacy of our past, I suppose. I grew up in Johannesburg and moved to Cape Town after school. I had wanted to be in the fashion industry. I thought maybe I could take the back door into the industry via modelling.

DLR: What did you love and/or loathe about the fashion world?

I do love fashion, but I like what kids on the street do with it more. I love the decadence of putting cheap labels with high-end labels and making it new and fantastic; there’s too much politics in the fashion/magazine world now because they have to please their designers who pay huge sums of money for ad space in the magazines and by showing a certain number of their clothes in the editorial page. This has become more of a big business now, and the art has left the room – it will now be seen more on the streets.

I love photography more than being a model...

DLR: What prompted your move behind the camera?

I love photography more than being a model, but it is far easier as you don’t have the pressure of pleasing the client and giving them what they want. As a model, you are just the clothes hanger. Being the photographer, you’re in charge of the creative process for the entire project. If the photos suck, it’s no one’s fault but your own.

DLR: Aside from your late husband, the great Pierre Houles, did you have any mentors who helped you transition from modelling to photography?

I worked with the greats – Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meiseland Sheila Metzner, to name a few. They were all inspiring and masters of their trade. I regret not talking to them more about their craft.

DLR: Are there any young photographers whose work excites you?

I follow a couple on Instagram. I love everything they post, and I find their work totally inspiring. There’s @sarahvanrij and @davidvanderleeuw and my daughter, @willowborain.

DLR: If you could photograph anything or anyone, what or who would it be? Most of them are dead now, unfortunately, but I would love to follow a president around for their time in office or a high-powered business person, chef, actor, doctor or marine biologist for “A Day in the Life of” piece – or a gang. Alternatively, I would have loved to have been a reportage photographer and shoot news, war, or street photography…

DLR: You’re often quoted as saying you like dressing like a man. Has your approach to fashion evolved further, and how does it reflect your current priorities?

Well, unfortunately, I now drive a Toyota Hilux and still have short hair, so every time I get pulled over by the cops or stop at a petrol station, the first thing people say is: “Hello, sir…” Ugh, I’m still a pants-and-shirt gal.

DLR: What are some of the most unexpected or transformative destinations you’ve visited?

I prefer a town with history and inspiring architecture. I am not one to lie on a beach and drink pretty cocktails with umbrellas stabbed into a cherry! I loved Morocco and Tunisia. Travelling through Algeria during Ramadan was a particularly eye-opening experience.

DLR: Running a coffee shop and managing a holiday cabin sounds like a shift in pace from the high-fashion world. What are the biggest joys and challenges of being your own boss in this new environment?

Vermaaklikheid is a tiny town with few permanent residents; sometimes I won’t see another human being for two or three days. I enjoy visiting the little coffee shop, as it provides a welcoming space for people to gather.

DLR: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? Mmmh, don’t fight in public. IB

FAMOUS ENCOUNTERS

CELEBRITY STATUS BRINGS WITH IT THE MUCH-LOVED FAME, FORTUNE, GLITZ AND GLAM, BUT THE PACKAGE WOULDN’T BE COMPLETE WITHOUT A LITTLE HEARTFELT LOVE FROM THE FANS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH SOUTH AFRICAN CELEBS WHO SHARED THEIR MOST MEMORABLE ENCOUNTERS WITH THEIR DEVOTED FOLLOWERS.

SINGER ZOE ZANA

“After my Idols journey ended, I had a super fan from my area who took ‘devoted’ to a whole new level! He would show up at my house every day for months on end, sitting outside and yelling my name. At first, I’d chat with him, but it quickly turned creepy. I had to enlist my dad’s help, and eventually, our enthusiastic friend stopped coming around. Note to self: be careful what you wish for when seeking fans.”

ACTOR ALTUS THEART

“A fan once asked me, ‘What do you actually do for a living?’ I replied, ‘I’m shooting Diepe Waters.’ She then said, ‘Ja, I know, but what do you actually do for a living?’ I replied again, ‘I’m shooting Diepe Waters.’ She persisted, ‘Ja, I know, but Diepe Waters is only on TV from 6.30pm to 7pm, so what do you do the rest of the day?’”

“Luckily, I haven’t had a crazy fan experience, but something that took me by surprise happened at my old primary school, where I was attending their athletics day. A child asked me to sign and write a message with a permanent marker on his expensive K-way jacket. I told him I couldn’t do that, explaining that his mom wouldn’t be happy. Instead, we found a pen and paper, and I wrote and signed a letter for him. Almost every fan of the show I meet tells me that I need to stop gossiping so much.”

ACTRESS FUNDI ZWANE

“I once had a fan dress up as my character from House of Zwide. She started a whole social media challenge using some of the iconic lines my character would say, and it was hilarious. I found it amazing.”

MEDIA PERSONALITY KYEEZI

“I’ve had two remarkable experiences with listeners. One offered his daughter’s hand in marriage after I played a set. Another told me that he’s nicknamed his son Kyeezi.”

A NEW MAN FOR MINNIE?

Minnie Dlamini appears to have a new man on her arm, but not everyone is happy with the news. Just weeks after facing allegations of an affair, the media personality softlaunched her relationship with celebrity plastic surgeon, Dr Brian Monaisa. Dr Monaisa recently took to his Instagram account to share a glimpse of their recent getaway to Zimbabwe, where he revealed, “I asked my girl to come with me for a business trip; she made it amazing.” Dlamini herself has maintained a low profile with regard to the new romance, but Dr Monaisa’s tag of her as his photographer seemed to provide a subtle yet telling hint of their blossoming relationship.

BASETSANA KUMALO TURNS 45… AGAIN!

Media mogul Basetsana Kumalo once again dazzled fans with her birthday celebrations. Playfully inviting guests to her “45th” birthday despite turning 50 last year, she sparked a social media buzz. In February, Sandton played host to Kumalo’s silverthemed birthday soiree. The event cleverly tied into the launch of Eucerin’s new anti-ageing serum, where Kumalo, a brand ambassador, embraced the playful marketing twist. “We thought it’s proven scientifically that the serum turns back time by five years, so let’s play on ‘Bassie turns 45’, and of course, it went viral. I guess it achieved what it was supposed to achieve.”

CHAD SAAIMAN’S NEW EP FEATURES JIMMY NEVIS

South African R&B star Chad Saaiman returns with 4 Part 1, his first project in years. Produced by the renowned Shaney Jay, 4 Part 1 is not just an introduction; it serves as the first part of a two-part collection that Saaiman describes as “starters before the main meal”. The standout single “2K” features Jimmy Nevis. “Each song has its own inspiration and story. From the reflective ‘Us’, which discusses the persistent efforts required in relationships, to ‘Midnight’, a celebration of the magic of music and life at night, and ‘Magnificent’, a soulful ode to love, each track is uniquely crafted to connect with listeners on various emotional levels.”

At the 2025 Grammys, Doechii made history, winning Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal. Overcome with emotion, she reflected on the significance of her win in a category with little female representation. She corrected herself mid-speech, proudly acknowledging her place alongside Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. As Cardi stood cheering in the background, an atmosphere of camaraderie filled the room. Speaking directly to Black women, she encouraged them to believe in themselves. “I know there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there, who are watching me right now, and I wanna tell you, you can do it; anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t

be here; that you’re too dark, or that you’re not smart enough, or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be to be right where you are, and I am a testimony.”

What’s the most unexpected perk of being an influencer?

All the friends I’ve made in my community! The DMs and comments make my platforms feel like one big girls’ chat. I’m also thankful for the memories I’ve created with loved ones - trips, gifts, and more - that will last a lifetime.

What’s a childhood dream you still want to achieve?

I had an incredible upbringing, and I dream of giving that to my future children. Despite my fabulous life, I’m still a small-town girl who values happiness, the simple things, and the people closest to me. I recently got married to the love of my life, and it feels like my fairytale is unfolding perfectly.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your failures?

I have a quote in my bathroom that says, “The biggest mistake you can ever make is being too afraid to make one.” I see mistakes and failures as growth, lessons, stepping stones, and even funny stories.

What’s your biggest irrational fear?

I’ve unfortunately developed an irrational fear of suitcases on escalators! I travel a lot and used to get a bit too brave, constantly rushing around with overweight suitcases. I should have taken the elevator, but I always took the risk.

What’s the most unexpected perk of being an influencer?

The perks are endless, but the one I truly cherish is my community. I’m always surprised when I meet people in person who follow me and share how I’ve inspired them, or when they remember something specific I’ve shared. It’s such a humbling experience.

What’s a childhood dream you still want to achieve?

Since I was young, I’ve always envisioned myself as a motivational speaker. In many ways, I already fulfil that calling by using my platform to spread light and inspiration. However, my ultimate dream is to write a book that brings this vision to life.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your failures?

I always emphasise the importance of failing forward – using setbacks as stepping stones toward success. Every failure has propelled me forward, and I say “propelled” because failure doesn’t just nudge you – it forces you to refocus, adapt, and find solutions.

What’s your biggest irrational fear?

Trypophobia – the fear of small, clustered circles. Ooooh, even just typing that gave me chills! Lol

Meeting so many other content creators and influencers who I used to look up to before I started social media. Now, I get to socialise and even collaborate with them!

What’s a childhood dream you still want to achieve?

Going to Disneyland! As a kid, I always heard about and saw pictures of the famous Disneyland, so visiting would be a childhood dream come true.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your failures?

Your failures pave the way to where you’re destined to be. Every failure comes with a lesson that helps you work toward success.

What’s your biggest irrational fear?

My fear of escalators is so real – I’d rather take the stairs than the elevator!

What’s the most unexpected perk of being an influencer?

The most unexpected perk is how much I’ve learned about business, branding, and marketing just by building my own platform. I started creating content for fun, but now I negotiate contracts, set rates, and understand brand positioning in ways I never imagined. Plus, the relationships I’ve built – whether with brands or my audience – have been incredibly rewarding. People genuinely invest in my journey, and that support is priceless.

What’s a childhood dream you still want to achieve?

I’ve always wanted to write a book! As a child, I loved storytelling, and now, with The City Makoti, I feel like I have so much to share – about culture, womanhood, and balancing tradition with modern life. I want to write something that’s funny, relatable, and empowering.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your failures?

That failing isn’t the end – it’s just feedback. Every setback has taught me something valuable, whether it’s trusting my instincts, adjusting my approach, or realising that not every opportunity is meant for me. The key is to fail forward – take the lesson and keep moving.

What’s your biggest irrational fear?

Cotton wool. I can’t stand the texture, the sound it makes when it’s pulled apart, or even the thought of touching it. It gives me an unexplainable shiver down my spine!

SIV HAPPENS...

ACTOR, COMEDIAN, AND UNAPOLOGETIC FORCE OF NATURE, SIV NGESI OPENS UP ABOUT THE PERSONAL LOSS THAT DRIVES HIS HEALTH OBSESSION AND WHY HE’S NOT AFRAID TO RUFFLE A FEW FEATHERS IN HEELS AND DRAG.

With a career spanning over three decades, Siv Ngesi’s journey to stardom began at the tender age of nine when a fortuitous encounter led to his first filming opportunity. Since then, he has performed at Nelson Mandela’s birthday party and even worked alongside Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis in The Woman King. Siv plays The Migan, the leader of the male army, while Viola portrays the leader of the women’s army. Together, they form an unlikely alliance and engage in fierce battles. “It’s an incredible role, and The Migan is an ally, like I play in my life, an ally to the women.”

“I have done other international films but nothing was as big as this one. It’s the first time I actually did a film and didn’t care how well I did but more about watching the ladies and being in awe of Viola Davis and watching what she is doing.”

Period piece

Siv’s commitment to being an ally extends beyond his role as The Migan. He’s also using his platform to fight period poverty with his new venture, Agoji pad – a sanitary pad factory he’s opening with the aim of providing affordable menstrual products to those in need. This venture, he believes, is not just a business but a legacy he hopes to leave for his children.

“I’ve been fighting period poverty for 13 years,” he says. “I’ve always wanted my own factory and brand because I was never happy with what was out there and how expensive they were. So, I raised the funds from scratch with help from friends. Now, we’re almost ready to open our factory.

“I won’t rest until sanitary pads are free for those who can’t afford them. If men bled once a month, pads would already be free. Period poverty isn’t just a women’s issue – it’s a humanity issue. Without menstruation, there’d be no humanity.”

A personal passion for health

Siv is equally vocal about health and wellness, a passion amplified by the personal losses he has faced.

“My mom passed away in 2022. She struggled with her weight her whole life, and by the time she wanted to change, it was too late.” Knowing that, he’s more committed than ever to fitness.

“I see way too many people priding themselves on not exercising. Nobody is asking you to be a Western Province rugby player or a runner, but everyone needs to move daily. If you aren’t moving daily, then you are stepping closer to your grave faster than you should. Find something you enjoy doing. I pole dance, I box, and I play padel – I do things I enjoy. I hate going to the gym; it doesn’t work for me.”

On nutrition, Siv emphasised the importance of mindful eating. “I love junk food, but I’ve made a pact not to stock carbs in my house. When I want to eat a croissant or any bread, I have to go out for it – that changed the game for me.” Instead of having big meals, he advocates for smaller, more frequent ones to maintain a healthy metabolism. But we’re all human, right? And when the mood strikes, Siv has a few South African favourites as his go-to cheat meal. “Oh, I love Zoo Biscuits, a good malva pudding, with Woolworths’ custard.”

Remembering his mom

While Siv keeps his focus forward, his late mother is never far from his thoughts. “One of my favourite memories of her is from when I was performing at Artscape Theatre. It was opening night, and I felt amazing – like I’d arrived. When I got home, my mom made me wash dishes. She told me I seemed more arrogant than usual that night. That lesson in humility has stayed with me.”

Coping with her loss hasn’t been easy. “Grief is like carrying a bag of bricks. The weight doesn’t change, but you learn to carry it. Some days, the bag digs into your back, and you need to adjust. I’ll never be okay, and I don’t want to be. Grief is love with nowhere to go, and I’ll take the pain – it’s worth it.”

Haters be damned

Busy breaking down societal norms in heels, on the pole, or as his drag alter ego “Sivanna”, Siv has no time for the haters.

“I don’t give a f*** what anyone thinks about my masculinity. Why do people care who I love or what gender they are? My mom loved that I did drag and pole dancing, and that’s all that matters. Everyone else can f*** off.”

We couldn’t resist asking if Siv is single – can you blame us? Have you seen him without a shirt? His response was cool and collected: “It’s nobody’s business,” he mused.

But he did share the traits he values in a partner –and yes, we’re taking notes!

“I look for vulnerability, consistency, compassion, humour, a sense of adventure, and a love for travel,” he said.

For Siv, travel is more than just a getaway; it’s a transformative experience that helps him discover new facets of himself and connect with incredible people. His recent backpacking trip through Vietnam reinforced this belief, and he encourages others to embrace travel, noting that it doesn’t have to break the bank.

As he looks ahead to 2025, Siv embodies the spirit of hope and determination, finding strength in both his personal journey and his professional aspirations. His reflections serve as an inspiration for many, reminding us that life is a series of ebbs and flows, and the key is to keep moving forward. IB

FIVE MINUTES WITH STANDUP COMEDIAN Stuart Taylor

STUART TAYLOR, ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S TOP ENTERTAINERS, HAS SPENT 25 YEARS DAZZLING AUDIENCES WITH COMEDY, TELEVISION, AND THEATRE. TODAY, STUART SHARES BEHIND-THE-SCENES STORIES FROM HIS REMARKABLE CAREER.

What was your comedy breakthrough?

My comedy journey was organic – like kale, but less irritating. I started with magic tricks at kids’ parties, enduring sugar-fuelled hecklers yelling, “That’s not real magic!” It was great training. Later, I performed magic at bar comedy nights –nothing screams “edgy” like pulling a rabbit out of a hat while dodging drink orders. But I envied the comedians, strolling up with just a mic while I hauled a suitcase of props like a depressed wizard. On one fateful night in January 2000, I ditched the props, grabbed a mic, and Stuart the Magician vanished. Poof – Stuart the Comedian was born.

If not a comedian, then what?

I have a science degree, so I’d probably be an Animal Physiology lecturer. I mean, teaching is basically just stand-up, but with fewer laughs and more PowerPoint slides. And, honestly, dissecting frogs would be less nerve-wracking than dissecting my own life on stage.

What does your family think of your comedy?

My wife says I’m funny, but she married me, so her judgement’s questionable. My youngest endures dad jokes daily, which he hates. But, when someone recognises me in public, he’s suddenly proud: “Wow, my dad’s famous!” – until he realises it doesn’t mean he’s off the hook for cleaning his room.

How do you give your best when you’re not feeling your best?

Adrenaline is like nature’s Red Bull. Even when I’m not feeling great, my body powers through. Emotionally, the stage is my therapy. While some pay therapists to listen to their problems, I air mine out to strangers. It’s cheaper, and I leave with applause, not a bill.

What was the craziest encounter you had on stage?

Early in my career, I was hosting the main stage at Oppikoppi, where sunscreen and sobriety go to die. I’d run out of jokes – my brain was emptier than a politician’s promises. Just as I was about to introduce the headliner, the stage manager whispered, “Do another five minutes.” FIVE. MINUTES. It felt like explaining quantum physics while juggling chainsaws. Somehow, I pulled it off. Turns out, I can still pull a magic trick when needed. IB

CELEBS AND THEIR PETS

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT YOUR FAVOURITE CELEBS ARE DOING WHEN THEY’RE HOME WITH THEIR FOUR-LEGGED FUR BABIES? INBOUND SA WENT BEHIND THE SCENES TO SNIFF OUT THE QUIRKY AND CUTE PET ROUTINES THAT YOUR FAVES ARE UP TO WHEN THEY’RE NOT ENTERTAINING YOU.

Mishka Loesch, model, TV presenter, and Good Hope FM radio personality, and her cat Xena

“I have three adopted/ rescue cats. One is a tortoiseshell (Xena), one is black (Zac), and one is a long-haired tabby (Xavius). Zac is the baby; he’s only a year old, and the other two will be turning nine this year. The question isn’t what I have done, it’s what I haven’t done, or what I won’t do for them! They are my first children. There’s nothing I won’t do for them.”

Tanya Nefdt, broadcast journalist, producer, and Feel SA presenter, and her Boston Terrier, Munich

“His name is Munich Nefdt, and he is a Boston Terrier. He recently celebrated his sixth birthday with doggy cupcakes and a meaty treat. I love how he proudly shows me during playtime how he runs and fetches a ball, just to bring it back to me. I enjoy dressing him up and make a point of buying him special outfits for special occasions. All we need now are matching outfits. Munich is also my regular gym partner and follows me to every machine for encouragement. Although he usually just lies or sits down, watching, I wouldn’t want to work out without him.”

News editor Leigh-Anne Jansen with Sage and Luna

“These are Sage and Luna, my babies, whom I adopted from the SPCA. I’m not really the extra kind of mom... unless you count having weekend eggs and toast brunch with my girls as extra.”

Nick Hamman, voiceover artist, scriptwriter, veteran radio presenter, and host of the ‘5 Breakfast’ show on 5FM, along with his dogs Willow and Bailey

“I have two beautiful rescue dogs, Willow and Bailey. Over the festive season, Willow and Bailey decided that the torrential rain made the grass completely unacceptable for their business. Instead, they eyed my brand-new, outrageously expensive Persian rug. One night, as the rain hammered down, I caught Bailey giving me the guiltiest ‘you know what’s coming’ look. Before I could react, the rug had been christened. Willow, never one to miss out on a trend, followed suit the next day. Now I’m the proud owner of what might be the world’s most luxurious doggy toilet. The rug may never recover, but hey, who am I to deny them a dry place to pee?”

DJ, producer, and activist Grandmaster Ready D, along with his dog Milo

“Milo, a seven-year-old American Pit Bull, has definitely cracked the code on getting whatever he wants. As a puppy, Milo had an early love for music. When I DJed and practiced, he would always perch on a box right next to the decks, vibing along. To this day, whenever we leave the house, we put on music for him – it keeps him calm. Jazz is his favourite, but he is also a big fan of lo-fi. Yes, our dog has taste. When it comes to big-ticket items, Milo knows how to work the system. He’ll sit, lie down, roll over, and even throw in a paw shake for good measure – because he knows that performance will end with his prize: a big, meaty treat.”

Stan Mars, actor, voiceover artist, and host of the GoodHope FM Big Breakfast Show, along with T Rox

“My little dynamo is a Yorkie named T Rox. He recently turned one and is the absolute light of my life. T Rox has been to many malls across South Africa. He is also my trusted road trip buddy. This year, T Rox will take his first international flight to Perth. He has the heart of a lion and is always ready to take on new adventures.”

The Big Easy

ERNIE ELS IS MORE THAN JUST A GOLF LEGEND. FROM MAJOR TITLES TO GAME-CHANGING PHILANTHROPY, “THE BIG EASY” KEEPS PROVING WHY HE’S ONE OF THE GREATS. AT 55, HE’S STILL WINNING, STILL INSPIRING, AND FAR FROM DONE.

When discussing golfing legends, few names resonate as strongly as Ernie Els. The 55-year-old South African, known affectionately as “The Big Easy”, has carved out an extraordinary legacy that transcends his impressive stats and accolades.

With an astonishing 80 professional victories

under his belt, including four major championships and a remarkable seven World Match Play titles, Els’s recent triumph at the 2025 Mitsubishi Electric Championship is a testament to his unwavering talent and resilience.

Reflecting on his hard-fought victory, Els shared, “I’ve been trying to get my hands on that trophy for five years now. What a battle it was. Getting it done under the gun is always very satisfying.”

A journey of triumphs

Els’s journey began in 1989, quickly capturing the hearts of South Africans with early successes on the Sunshine Tour. His first international win at the Dunlop Phoenix in 1993 marked his entry onto the global stage. However, it was his 1994 US Open victory that solidified his status among golf’s elite. Following this initial triumph, Els continued to shine, capturing the Open Championship at Muirfield in 2002, silencing critics who doubted his mental toughness.

To top off that season, Els won the World Match Play title for a recordtying fifth time. Els was also voted 37th on SABC3’s Great South Africans list in 2003, reinforcing his status as a revered public figure in South Africa and in the global sporting community.

The young golfer from Pretoria, known for his remarkably smooth swing and exceptional short game, has transformed into a powerhouse on the professional circuit, serving as a true inspiration for countless aspiring athletes.

Recognised for his contributions to the sport, he was awarded honorary life membership of the European Tour in 2000, followed by his induction into the South African Golf Hall of Fame in 2009 and the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011. Yet, his legacy is not just defined by titles; it is enriched by his significant philanthropic efforts.

A champion off the course

In 2009, Ernie and his wife Liezl founded the Els for Autism Foundation, establishing the Els Centre of Excellence, a facility dedicated to supporting individuals with autism.

Their commitment extends beyond golf, aiming to empower those on the spectrum to lead fulfilling lives and make a profound impact in various communities.

According to the Els for Autism Foundation, all funds collected go directly towards gaining a deeper insight into the goals of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and supporting them in achieving their potential for fulfilling, productive and meaningful lives.

But that’s not all. In 2023, Els was selected to redesign the Victoria Course in Portugal, marking the creation of his first exclusive club in Europe. This endeavour holds personal significance for him, as he fondly recalls family vacations in the region during his children’s early years.

“When the kids were small, we lived in England and could come down to this area for summer holidays. We would come down and play golf on the courses in Vilamoura. So, when the opportunity came up, via sports and leisure management company, DETAILS, it made sense to me. When I come here, I feel like I’m coming home,” says Els.

Diverse ventures and lasting impact

Beyond the fairway, Els has successfully ventured into hospitality and wine production with Ernie Els Wines, and even launched a range of pet products.

His entrepreneurial spirit harmonises with his dedication to philanthropy, exemplified by The Ernie Els Foundation, which provides educational assistance and golfing opportunities to underprivileged youth in South Africa.

As Ernie continues to excel in his golfing career, he serves as a beacon of hope and determination.

His legacy shines brightly, reminding us that resilience, love for the game, and a commitment to uplifting others can lead to extraordinary accomplishments.

“Even if you don’t believe in yourself as much, days like this when you make those putts like you used to, it gives you hope again,” adds Els. IB

Locnville A NEW WORLD AWAITS

THE YEAR IS 2010, AND LOCNVILLE’S SUN IN MY POCKET IS DOMINATING RADIO CHARTS, CEMENTING THE CHAPLIN BROTHERS AS SOUTH AFRICA’S BREAKOUT STARS. THOUGH IT’S BEEN 15 YEARS, ANDREW AND BRIAN ARE FAR FROM FADING INTO NOSTALGIA. AS THEY PREPARE TO RELEASE FRESH MUSIC – AND ONE OF THEM HINTS AT A BITTERSWEET FAREWELL –LOCNVILLE IS SET TO REMIND THE WORLD WHY THEIR SOUND STILL RESONATES.

For over a decade, the Chaplin brothers, Andrew and Brian, have been a household name in the South African music industry, captivating fans with their infectious electro-hop beats and memorable lyrics. Now, as they embark on a new chapter, their journey signals both reinvention and an emotional farewell.

Early beginnings and breakthrough

Andrew and Brian’s love for music ignited at age six when they each picked up a guitar. “To be honest, I can’t necessarily say exactly what started the whole idea, but it was a goal of ours from as far back as I can recall,” Andrew reflects. Brian adds, “Both Andrew and I got one, and from there, we just started playing together and basically never stopped.”

Their big break came in 2009 with their debut album, Sun in My Pocket. The title track became an anthem, topping charts and securing a record deal. This success propelled them onto the international stage, leading to major festival appearances and collaborations with top artists. The momentum culminated in them winning Best African Act at the 2013 MTV EMAs.

“That whole period was really successful for us,” Andrew recalls. “It was a chance to try something new, and getting recognition on a global scale

affirmed that we had more to offer.” Brian adds, “Winning an MTV EMA was one of the bigger highlights of my career. Walking the red carpet alongside our biggest inspirations was incredible.”

Shifting priorities – and the future

As their musical paths diverge, Andrew explores other industries while Brian embraces family life and digital finance. “I think musically, 2025 is going to be the year I sort of ‘hang up my hat’,” Brian hints. However, he clarifies, “I wouldn’t say I’m leaving it behind entirely. Other opportunities have come up, and whether I make more music in the future is anyone’s guess.”

As for Locnville continuing without Brian, Andrew is clear: “Not even a consideration. It’s a joint project, and we’ve both gotten what we wanted out of it.”

A nostalgic revival with a fresh twist

Despite impending changes, Locnville has exciting plans. Andrew teases a return to nostalgic sounds, while Brian assures fans that something special is on the horizon, with releases expected in late 2025.

Fans can anticipate a seamless blend of classic Locnville energy infused with fresh creativity. “I personally would like to offer something that makes long-time listeners proud,” Andrew shares.

On the same day, her album Falling into You reached No. 1 on the UK album chart.

Bieber’s Munich monkey business

In 2013, Justin Bieber ran into trouble at Munich Airport when customs officials detained and quarantined his monkey. Bieber had brought the monkey along to join him on the Austrian and German legs of his European tour, but he lacked the necessary documentation to bring his new pet into Germany. While the monkey was held in custody by authorities, Bieber performed in Munich.

South Africa answered Stevie’s call

On 26 March 1985, a pivotal moment in music history was overshadowed by SA’s deeply entrenched political landscape. The world awoke to the news that legendary artist Stevie Wonder had dedicated his Academy Award to Nelson Mandela, who had been imprisoned since 1962. This tribute ignited a fierce debate and backlash from South African authorities, leading local radio stations to ban Wonder’s music. TRANSFORMS THE LOUNGE Nelson Makamo

EXPERIENCE ACCLAIMED ARTIST NELSON MAKAMO’S VIBRANT WORKS AT THE LOUNGE! CELEBRATING SAA’S 90-YEAR LEGACY, DISCOVERY HAS TRANSFORMED THESE SPACES INTO CULTURAL DESTINATIONS SHOWCASING MAKAMO’S ARTISTIC NARRATIVE AND SOUTH AFRICA’S SPIRIT.

In an exciting development for art lovers and travellers alike, Discovery has partnered with South African Airways (SAA) to elevate the travel experience at their airport lounges with the stunning works of Nelson Makamo.

“Nelson is undeniably one of South Africa’s most revered artists, and we are proud to share his collection with our guests in The Lounge,” says Dinesh Govender, CEO of Discovery Vitality, on the profound impact of Makamo’s artistry.

The colourful initiative has not only enriched the aesthetic appeal of these spaces, it also celebrates the rich cultural identity of South Africa as a whole.

This partnership also coincides with SAA’s 90th anniversary – a significant milestone for an airline that has dedicated nearly a century to connecting people across the globe.

Nelson Makamo’s artistic legacy

With roots in Johannesburg, Makamo’s evocative charcoal and oil paintings explore themes of African identity and childhood.

His ability to capture vivid emotions and nuanced expressions makes his pieces resonate deeply with global audiences.

Notably, his work Vision of a Limitless Future was featured on the cover of Time magazine’s Optimism issue in 2019, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most sought-after young artists of his generation.

Sixteen years after completing his training at Artist Proof Studios, Makamo continues to enrich the global art landscape with his work. His works have been featured in exhibitions worldwide, including prestigious collections in both public and private domains.

Nelson Makamo

Bringing art to The Lounges

Now his iconic artworks have found a new home in The Lounge, adding a profound cultural touch to the atmosphere for travellers.

Govender remarked on the significance of showcasing Makamo’s work, reflecting on the resilient spirit and optimism embedded in South African culture.

The unveiling of Makamo’s art within the lounges – located at OR Tambo International Departures, OR Tambo Domestic Departures and Cape Town International’s Domestic Departures – is a transformative experience that repurposes the notion of airport waiting areas into vibrant cultural destinations.

“We are honoured to share Nelson Makamo’s collection with the world as part of our 90thanniversary celebrations,” noted SAA Interim CEO, Professor John Lamola. His sentiment resonates with the essence of SAA’s legacy of excellence and its ongoing mission to spotlight the best of what South Africa has on offer.

More than just aesthetics

This partnership goes beyond mere aesthetics. It embodies Discovery’s commitment to creating engaging experiences for both SAA passengers and Discovery Bank members.

Govender elaborated: “This initiative reflects our commitment to unforgettable experiences, and we hope visitors see themselves reflected in this body of work.”

As Makamo envisions, his pieces invite viewers to embrace their connections to the stories documented through art, making each visitor’s experience more intimate and meaningful.

Whether for art enthusiasts or curious travellers, through the efforts of Discovery, Makamo’s collection at the SAA lounges promises to offer a glimpse into the heart of Mzansi, leaving an indelible mark long after departure. IB

YOUR MAKE-UP IS ONLY AS

good as your skin

TAKING CARE OF OUR SKIN SHOULD BE SECOND NATURE TO US. WE SHOULDN’T JUST RELY ON EVERYDAY MAKE-UP TO PERFECT EVERYTHING. INSTEAD, WE CAN PUT IN THE WORK AND LET MAKE-UP BE THE FINISHING TOUCH – THE CHERRY ON TOP. WE SPOKE TO CATRICE AND ESSENCE’S IN-HOUSE MAKE-UP ARTIST, ALANA DU PLOOY, ABOUT THE CORRELATION BETWEEN SKIN AND MAKE-UP.

What does taking care of the base – your skin –mean to you?

It means consistency in a wellbalanced skincare routine, going beyond the basics of cleansing, toning and moisturising. It’s also about fuelling your body with the right foods, such as fruits and vegetables, to support a healthier skin barrier.

How important is a solid skincare foundation for achieving glowing, flawless makeup?

Your makeup is only as good as your skin, so laying a solid foundation is crucial. Taking care of your skin’s base is essential to allow your chosen foundation to glide on and apply flawlessly. A consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, toning and moisturising can significantly contribute to a glowing, flawless makeup look. Additionally, selecting a lightweight and nourishing foundation that complements your skin is vital.

Out of all the products you use, name one beauty product that you truly live by.

That’s a tough one, but honestly, my routine isn’t complete without my blusher! Whether it’s cream, powder or both, it’s a step that can’t be skipped in

any look I create for myself or my clients. Blusher adds radiance and a gorgeous youthful glow.

I was a big fan of the “blusher blindness” trend last year, and recently Catrice launched the Blush Affair Cream & Powder Palette. My personal favourite shade is 040 Peach Passion.

Can you share your thoughts on the relationship between skincare and make-up?

Skincare and make-up are inextricably linked. A strong skincare routine acts as the foundation for flawless make-up application, as healthy, wellnourished skin enables make-up to look its best while also protecting the skin underneath.

Prioritising skincare is key to achieving optimal results with make-up – not the other way around. This is why many artists live by the saying, “Your make-up is only as good as your skin.”

When it comes to beauty, I stand by this one thing…

Consistency is key. You can’t expect the best results with your skin and make-up when you haven’t truly invested the time and effort into your routine. Be consistent and be kind to yourself – ageing is a beautiful journey and should be embraced. IB

SAFETY ASSESSMENT Bio-Oil® Body Lotion has undergone a safety assessment by a qualified toxicologist and has been classified as safe for its intended use by adults, including pregnant and lactating women, and children over three years old. DRY SKIN CLINICAL TRIAL Trial centre Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective A clinical evaluation to test the efficacy of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion in improving skin moisturisation. Sample Subjects: 30 healthy female participants with Fitzpatrick skin types II-V and clinically showing dry / very dry skin at the level of the outer lower legs. Test site: test product applied to an outer, lower leg of all subjects. Age of participants: 25–65. Methodology Split body, evaluator-blinded, randomised and controlled clinical-instrumental study. Participants washed their legs with soap to induce dry skin over a 7-day period. Baseline clinical and instrumental evaluations were taken. Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was applied twice daily for 28 days to the assigned lower lateral leg, the opposite leg remained untreated. Clinical assessments and instrumental evaluations were conducted on days 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 21 and 28. The control untreated site was also evaluated at all time points. Subjects were clinically graded for dryness (on a scale from 0–5) by a trained visual evaluator. Quantitative measurement of skin hydration was by Corneometer. Quantitative measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) as an indicator of barrier function, was by Tewameter. Additionally, a self-assessment questionnaire was completed on days 8 and 14. Result Compared to the untreated area, treatment with Bio-Oil® Body Lotion resulted in a statistically significant improvement in clinical grading of dryness, Tewameter and Corneometer measurements, from as early as day 1, and at all time points. For clinical grading of dryness, statistically significant improvements were evident in 96.7% of participants from day 14 onwards, almost double the improvement noted at day 1. After 28 days of use, 100% of participants showed a significant increase in skin moisturisation, with the extent of the improvement almost 4 times that at day 1. Similarly, after 28 days of use 100% of participants showed a significant decrease in TEWL, with the extent of the improvement more than double that at day 1. These findings are supported by the results of the self-assessment questionnaire. DRY SKIN USER TRIAL Trial centre Ayton Global Research, United Kingdom. Objective To assess the performance of Bio Body Lotion as a body moisturiser. Sample Subjects: 119 female participants in good health. Age of participants: 25–65. Methodology A 2-week, single-placement, in-home user trial. Participants were instructed to apply product twice daily, morning and evening. Massage into skin until fully absorbed. Three short questionnaires were completed: the first after initial application, the second after 12 hours, and the third after 2 weeks of using the product. Result Application: 95% of participants agreed that ‘the product is lighter than any moisturiser they have used before’. 93% of participants agreed that ‘the product spreads more easily than any moisturiser they have used before’. Absorption: 82% of participants agreed that ‘the product absorbs more easily than any moisturiser they have used before’. 75% of participants agreed that ‘the product absorbs quicker than any moisturiser they have used before’. 74% of participants agreed that ‘the product leaves no greasy residue after application’. 86% of participants agreed that ‘after applying the product they were able to get dressed immediately’. Hydration: 93% of participants agreed that ‘the product leaves skin feeling immediately moisturised’. 92% of the participants agreed that ‘after applying the product their skin feels smooth and silky’. 90% of participants agreed that ‘their skin felt moisturised the entire day’ and 91% agreed that ‘their skin feels smooth and silky the entire day’. 92% of participants agreed that ‘their skin looks better than it did at the beginning of the 2-week period’. Overall: 73% of participants agreed that ‘the product is better than any moisturiser they have used before’. SENSITIVE SKIN TEST Trial centre Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective To assess the potential of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion to cause skin irritation. Sample Subjects: 25 participants; 3 male and 22 female, all with sensitive skin according to lactic acid stinging test. Age of participants: 18–70. Methodology Controlled study. Two areas were evaluated: area to which a negative control was applied (demineralised water) and an area to which Bio Body Lotion was applied. Test products were applied to the back region of participants, in contact with the skin surface, for a period of 48 hours using a Finn Chamber®. Skin reactions were evaluated under the supervision of a dermatologist, to assess primary skin irritation at 15 minutes, 1 hour and 24 hours after patch removal. Skin reactions were rated on a scale from 0–4 (with 0 being no erythema, oedema, or other types of skin irritation, and 4 being serious erythema and oedema, indicating dark red appearance and extended swelling beyond the application area). Result The skin tolerability of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was deemed ‘non-irritating’. NON-COMEDOGENIC TEST Trial centre Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective To assess the comedogenic potential of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion. Sample Subjects: 20 participants; 14 female and 6 male of varying ethnicities with acne prone skin. Age of participants: 18–65. Methodology Controlled study. The product was applied on a disk of filter paper to the upper back region of participants. Patches were left in place for 48 to 72 hours, removed and applied again. A total of 12 patches were applied for 4 consecutive weeks. Three areas were evaluated by comparing a negative control (demineralised water), the test product (Bio-Oil® Body Lotion) and a positive control (lanolin alcohol, a known comedogenic product). Skin reactions were clinically evaluated under the supervision of a dermatologist 15 minutes after the removal of each patch to compare the presence of comedones before and after each product application. Result Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was found to be non-comedogenic. The area to which Bio Body Lotion was applied showed no significant difference to the negative control area. The positive control induced acne. VISCOSITY STUDY Trial centre Union Swiss, South Africa. Objective An internal study to assess the dynamic viscosity of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion compared to similar moisturising products. Sample Comparison of Bio-Oil® Body Lotion to 13 moisturising products manufactured by 10 global brands with an established history in moisturisation. Methodology Dynamic viscosity was read using an Anton Paar RheoLab QC rheometer, using spindle CC 39, speed: 200 rpm at 20˚C, shear rate: 155. Result Bio-Oil® Body Lotion was found to have a 7.5 times lower dynamic viscosity than the average of the competitor products (94 mPa.s vs. 707 mPa.s respectively), indicating a thinner, lighter fluid that’s more easily and rapidly absorbed. APPLICATION How to apply Bio-Oil® Body Lotion should be massaged in a circular motion on the body until fully absorbed. It is recommended that Bio-Oil® Body Lotion be applied twice daily, morning and evening. Bio-Oil® Body Lotion should not be applied to an open wound or broken skin. It is intended for topical cosmetic application only. Shake before use Bio-Oil® Body Lotion is an emulsion in which the water and oil are very lightly bound together. So lightly, that when left standing some of the oils rise to the surface of the product forming a thin layer. By gently shaking the product before use, the oil layer disperses back into the lotion. Layer formation can take anywhere from three days to three weeks and is dependent on factors such as temperature, how vigorously and how frequently the bottle has been shaken. The mere act of using the product daily, turning the bottle upside down when dispensing, is more than sufficient to ensure that this oil layer does not form. If an oil layer has formed and the product is dispensed without shaking, a clear oil mixture may flow from the bottle. This is not a consumer safety risk. How long to use Bio-Oil® Body Lotion’s clinical trial has been performed over a four-week period, allowing the performance of the product to be assessed over time. Statistical analysis shows a significant improvement in the appearance of the skin after as little as 24 hours and that this improvement is maintained for

TACKLING ECZEMA

ARE YOU TIRED OF LIVING WITH ITCHY, INFLAMED SKIN? LEARN HOW TO MANAGE ECZEMA SYMPTOMS AND DISCOVER A PATH TO CLEARER, HEALTHIER SKIN.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by dry, itchy and inflamed skin. While the exact cause of eczema is not fully understood, it is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors. Here are some common causes and contributing factors:

• Genetic factors: A family history of eczema, allergies or asthma increases the likelihood of developing eczema, suggesting a hereditary component.

• Immune system dysfunction: An overactive immune response can lead to inflammation in the skin, contributing to eczema symptoms.

• Skin barrier defects: Individuals with eczema often have a compromised skin barrier, making the skin more susceptible to irritants, allergens and moisture loss. This is linked to mutations in the gene responsible for producing filaggrin, a protein that helps maintain the skin barrier.

• Environmental factors: Various environmental triggers can exacerbate eczema symptoms, including:

• Irritants: soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants

• Allergens: pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mould

• Climate: extreme temperatures, humidity, and seasonal changes

• Stress

• Food allergies: Certain food allergies can trigger or worsen eczema symptoms, particularly in children. Common allergens include dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, and wheat.

• Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormones, such as during puberty or menstruation, can influence eczema severity in some individuals.

Do’s for eczema management

1. Moisturise regularly: Use emollients and moisturisers frequently to keep the skin hydrated. Apply them immediately after bathing to lock in moisture.

2. Take short, lukewarm baths or showers: Limit your bathing time and use lukewarm water instead of hot water, which can dry out the skin. Consider adding colloidal oatmeal or bath oils to your bath.

3. Use gentle, fragrance-free products: Choose mild, fragrance-free cleansers, shampoos, and detergents. Look for sulphate-free products.

4. Wear soft, breathable fabrics: Opt for loose-fitting clothes made from cotton or other natural fibres. Avoid rough fabrics like wool that can irritate the skin.

5. Manage stress: Practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises.

6. Stay cool: Dress in layers and use fans, or invest in air conditioning to maintain a comfortable temperature. IB

THREADING THE needle of fashion

THERE ARE DESIGNERS, AND THEN THERE’S ORAPELENG MODUTLE – AN ARTIST WHOSE HANDS WERE MADE FOR HIGH FASHION. HIS WORK AT OM STYLE AVENUE SPEAKS VOLUMES, BLENDING SOPHISTICATION WITH AN UNMATCHED ATTENTION TO DETAIL. WE’RE CAPTIVATED, OBSESSED, AND FULLY IN AWE OF HIS ‘EYE FOR PRECISION.’ WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO DIVE DEEPER INTO HIS WORLD OF LUXURY CRAFTSMANSHIP.

How do you build a solid, thriving luxury brand?

Develop a strong, recognisable brand identity that resonates with your target market. And create designs that are not just trendy, but timeless, appealing to discerning customers for years to come.

Who is your ultimate favourite international “It” girl to work – do you have any?

Media personality Toke Makinwa from Nigeria would be my ultimate favourite celebrity to dress. She just exudes so much class and opulence. Toke is the true epitome of the OM Style Avenue woman.

Have you ever thought about collaborating with another international designer?

Definitely, it would have to be French fashion designer Olivier Rousteing. His creative process and craftsmanship are two things I really admire. What he has done as the creative director for Balmain is phenomenal.

How do you ensure there is inclusivity in your brand?

The brand offers a bespoke service that is inclusive to a variety of our clientele, including plus-size individuals and the LGBTQ+ community.

And still sticking to high quality and that luxe touch, how do you do that?

I’m always on the search for new and innovative ways to elevate my work, and I achieve this by working with highly skilled artisans who ensure precise cuts, flawless finishes, and impeccable attention to detail.

How do you get that perfect craft touch?

It’s rooted in the brand’s unique style and identity. OM Style Avenue prides itself on its exceptional craftsmanship and luxurious femininity. In addition to meticulous craftsmanship, several other roles are vital in ensuring the end product meets its intended purpose, like investing in the right team and using high-quality materials that meet client expectations.

Which event has been the biggest highlight in your fashion career?

The biggest highlight for me has to be the Africa Fashion International’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. It was a great stepping stone for me, catapulting my career to new heights. My first showcase on the platform in 2016 was phenomenal.

Is there a celebrity tied in with OM Avenue’s work right now?

We currently have an amazing working relationship with South African multimedia entrepreneur Pamela Mtanga.

We started working with her during last year’s Durban July and the response was incredible –there is just an amazing synergy between us.

What are you most excited about with regard to the future?

For us, the growth and expansion of the OM Style Avenue brand involve taking it to the international Pan-African market. IB

beginners BOXING FOR

GET READY TO RUMBLE! JOIN BOXING COACH NICOLE BESSICK AS SHE SHARES EXPERT TIPS AND TECHNIQUES FOR BEGINNERS LOOKING TO THROW THEIR FIRST PUNCH.

So, you’ve decided to take up boxing – whether it’s for fitness, self-defence, or just to channel your inner Rocky Balboa. But where do you start? Do you just start throwing punches at the air and hope for the best? Not quite. Luckily, we’ve got Nicole Bessick, South Africa’s first female celebrity boxing champion, to walk us through the ropes (pun absolutely intended).

Nicole is a force to be reckoned with. Actress, TV presenter, celebrity boxing champion, and CEO of The Fight for Good Foundation – South Africa’s first anti-GBV initiative designed to take women from victim to warrior in 12 weeks.

From figure skating as a child to dominating the ring, she’s proof that discipline, grit, and maybe a little bit of stubbornness go a long way. Oh, and did we mention she’s currently starring in Pound 4 Pound, a groundbreaking all-female action-drama? Basically, she’s a total powerhouse, and we’re lucky to have her as our guide to boxing for beginners.

Getting started

“For me, it all started with a desire to do my own stunts, because as an actor, authenticity is key!” says Nicole. “I’ve been involved in sports my whole life, so jumping into boxing felt like a natural fit. Then in 2017, I won my first boxing match,

making history as the first female celebrity boxing champion on the continent – it was a total gamechanger!”

Since then, she’s fought in numerous events and trained with some of the country’s finest fighters, including Boyd and Quade Allen, Luke Hendrickz and Leo Rothmann, who helped her prep for Pound 4 Pound

So, what’s the first step for newbies? Just get started, says Nicole. “All you need are a pair of boxing gloves, some wraps, and the drive to learn!” And once you get serious? “Add a mouthguard, headgear, and a solid pair of boots to your kit.” Simple.

Mastering the basics

You’ve got your gloves, you’re feeling pumped – but how do you actually *hit* something (or someone) correctly? Nicole gives us a quick breakdown:

1. Jab: A quick, straight punch with your lead hand. “It’s perfect for measuring distance and setting up combos,” she explains.

2. Pro tip: Snap the punch out fast and retract it quickly to guard.

3. Cross: A powerful straight punch from the rear hand. “Rotate your hips and pivot on your rear foot to generate power,” she advises.

4. Hook: A semi-circular punch aimed at the side of the opponent’s head or body. “Keep your elbow bent at 90 degrees and rotate your torso into the punch,” Nicole instructs.

5. Uppercut: An upward punch targeting the opponent’s chin. “Drop your weight slightly before driving the punch upward – keep your elbow close to your body,” she adds.

How not to get hit

A boxer without footwork is like a fish without water – flopping around, confused and probably in trouble. Nicole’s advice? “Practice moving in all directions – forward, backward, lateral shuffles. The key is to stay agile and always ready to adjust your position.” Want to sharpen your defence? Nicole suggests you try these:

• Slip rope drill: Set up a rope at shoulder height and practise slipping under it to avoid imaginary punches.

• Parrying: Work with a partner to deflect punches with minimal movement.

• Blocking: Use your gloves and arms to absorb incoming shots during sparring.

The warm-up & cool-down

Nicole can’t stress this enough: “Warming up and cooling down are crucial for preventing injuries and maximising performance.”

Nicole’s warm-up must-dos:

• Dynamic stretching (leg swings, arm circles, torso rotations)

• Jump rope (great for cardiovascular readiness and footwork)

• Shadow boxing (loosens muscles and gets you mentally locked in)

Cool-down essentials according to Nicole:

• Static stretching (keeps muscles flexible and ready for the next session)

• Deep breathing (lowers your heart rate and promotes relaxation)

• Foam rolling (reduces muscle tightness and speeds up recovery)

Eat like a boxer

Nicole keeps it real: “Ditch the trends and stick to the basics.”

What’s Nicole’s “on the menu”?

• Lean proteins (chicken, steak) for muscle recovery

• Complex carbs (oats, rice) for sustained energy

• Healthy fats (avocados, nuts) for strength

• Water, water, water! Hydration is key for performance and recovery.

Advice for beginners

“Jump in with both hands, no hesitation,” Nicole says. “Boxing is about mental grit just as much as it’s about physical power. Own the small wins, learn from the setbacks and never stop pushing forward.”

She also encourages women to get involved: “Every time you glove up, you’re smashing stereotypes, breaking boundaries, and honouring the incredible strength and resilience of the female body.”

And finally? “Slide into my DMs and keep me posted – I can’t wait to come along for the ride!”

So, what are you waiting for? Wrap those hands, lace up your gloves, and get ready to throw some punches. You never know – you might just have a champion in you. IB

The all-stars of the mushroom world

Let’s take a quick stroll through the mushroom kingdom and meet the headliners:

• Lion’s Mane: Dubbed the “brain mushroom”, this fluffy number is said to support cognitive function and memory. Perfect for those days when your brain feels like mush.

• Reishi: Known as the “mushroom of immortality”, Reishi is all about those calm vibes, dude. It’s often used to promote relaxation and improve sleep.

• Chaga: A knobbly powerhouse, Chaga is loaded with antioxidants. It’s like a shield for your immune system, fending off nasties and keeping you fighting fit.

• Cordyceps: Need an energy boost? This funky fungus has got you covered. It’s often used to support stamina and endurance, making it ideal for those early morning jogs or just making it through Monday.

You don’t have to forage in the woods to reap the benefits. Functional mushrooms are popping up in all sorts of convenient forms: teas, powders, capsules, and even coffee blends. Add a scoop of Lion’s Mane powder to your morning brew or sip on a Reishi tea before bed – easy-peasy.

A quick heads-up: while functional mushrooms are natural, it’s always a good idea to check with a healthcare professional before diving in, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, or on medication.

Are they worth the hype?

The science behind functional mushrooms is still growing, but many people swear by them for a little health boost. Whether you’re looking to power up, chill out or just show your body some extra love, these fungi might be worth a try. IB

Surf’s up!

SURF LODGE SOUTH AFRICA IN JEFFREYS BAY IS THE ULTIMATE SURF CAMP AND YOGA RETREAT, SET ON A PRIVATE-LIKE BEACH WITH STUNNING SEA VIEWS. WITH COMFORTABLE, LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATION, IT’S THE PERFECT PLACE TO ENJOY REJUVENATING YOGA SESSIONS, LEARN TO SURF AND SOAK UP THE AFRICAN SUN.

Jeffreys Bay had always been on my radar as a quintessential surf town, but my stay at Surf Lodge South Africa elevated it to an unforgettable adventure. Tucked away on the sunkissed shores of the Eastern Cape, this lodge offers far more than just a place to stay – it’s a launchpad for the kind of experiences that leave you feeling alive.

I arrived as someone who’d barely touched a surfboard before, but the expert-led lessons here made catching my first wave surprisingly accessible. The instructors are patient, encouraging, and passionate, making it impossible not to absorb their enthusiasm for the ocean. By the end of my trip, I wasn’t just standing on the board – I was riding small waves and already planning my next session.

Mornings started with a calming yoga session overlooking the ocean. Even if you’re not a yoga devotee, there’s something undeniably grounding about stretching while the waves crash in the distance. It’s the perfect counterbalance to the physicality of surfing or the more adrenalinepumping activities.

Speaking of adrenaline, Surf Lodge South Africa isn’t short on options for thrill-seekers. One afternoon, I found myself flying across a zipline into a clear waterhole, a surreal experience that had me grinning from ear to ear. But the ultimate rush came when I took the plunge at the famous Bloukrans Bridge, home to the world’s highest bungee jump. Standing on the edge, peering down at the valley below, I was equal parts terrified and exhilarated. The jump itself? Unbelievable. The rush of free-falling for what felt

with ocean views that pull you out of bed in the morning. Evenings are social and lively; shared meals with fellow adventurers, swapping stories under the stars. It’s a place where you feel connected, not just to nature but to the people around you.

Whether you’re diving headfirst into adventure or simply soaking up the tranquil beauty of Jeffreys Bay, Surf Lodge SA delivers. It’s the kind of destination that reminds you what it means to really live. I left with salt in my hair, sand in my shoes, and a heart full of new memories. 2025 is officially off to a phenomenal start. IB

like an eternity was a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

If that wasn’t enough, I also joined a horseback ride along the beach, the salty breeze and rhythmic sound of hooves creating an unexpectedly meditative moment.

What stood out most was how seamlessly the lodge combines action and relaxation. The accommodation is stylish yet unpretentious,

Ishikawa IN BLOOM

GO ON A JOURNEY THROUGH JAPAN’S ISHIKAWA PREFECTURE – A TREASURE TROVE OF SCENIC BEAUTY, RICH HISTORY, AND VIBRANT CULTURE. FROM SAMURAI STREETS TO HOT SPRINGS, GEISHA PERFORMANCES TO SERENE GARDENS, ISHIKAWA PROMISES UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURES FOR EVERY TRAVELLER.

If Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture, located on the northwest coast of Honshu Island, isn’t on your travel wish list, it should be. Just a bullet train ride from Tokyo, and hugged by the coastline of the Sea of Japan, this region boasts stunning landscapes, antique streetscapes, centuries-old crafts, vibrant geigi culture, temples,

gardens, hot springs, cherry blossoms in spring, and ski slopes in winter. Home to the remote Noto Peninsula, the historical castle town of Kanazawa, the seafaring city of Kaga, and the mountainous Hakusan region, Ishikawa Prefecture offers something to explore, excite, and enthral just about everyone.

Kanazawa Castle

Discovering Kanazawa

Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, is a city with a rich culture and history that successfully blends the modern with the traditional. It’s an important city famed for its classical architecture, landscaped gardens, art museums, and regional handicrafts. However, Kanazawa’s main attraction is undoubtedly Kenrokuen Garden. The garden features trees, shrubs, ponds, and waterfalls, and its beauty changes with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, carpets of green moss in summer, crimson maple trees in autumn, and in winter, gardeners carefully tie up the tall trees with bamboo and rope to protect them from heavy snowfall.

Kenrokuen was once the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle, and the gardens and castle are located in the same complex. Built in 1580, the castle has suffered greatly throughout its history, with numerous devastating fires occurring over the years. Recently, the city has rebuilt sections of the castle, making it an impressive place to visit. A traditional tea service is available at the Gyokusen’an Rest House, located in the Gyokusen’inmaru Garden within the Kanazawa Castle grounds.

Exploring Ishikawa’s hidden gems

A short stroll from the gardens and the castle lies the Higashi Chaya District, Kanazawa’s historic entertainment district. The chaya, or “teahouses”, were traditionally venues where customers would gather to enjoy performances by geisha (or geigi, as they are known in Kanazawa). Geigi

are female performing artists and entertainers trained in traditional Japanese performing arts styles, including dance, music, and singing, as well as being proficient conversationalists and hosts. Visit Kanazawa House for a traditional geigi evening, featuring amazing food, entertainment, and opportunities to converse with the delightful ladies between performances.

Omicho Market is Kanazawa’s largest fresh food market, featuring over 180 stalls and restaurants. A market has been in operation at this very location since the 1600s, making it definitely worth a visit to sample the fresh produce and chat with the stallholders. You can even try vending machine sushi – it really does exist! Next, head to the Nagamachi District, with its cobblestone streets and tiled earthen walls. Once home to samurai families during the Edo period (1603-1867), spending time here provides a glimpse into the lives of these samurai of old. A highlight is the Nomura Residence, the only samurai residence open to the public in Nagamachi, showcasing various heirlooms, including an impressive suit of samurai armour.

Less than an hour’s drive from Kanazawa City lies the tiny hamlet of Kanagaso, home to the Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute. Noguchi Naohiko is one of Japan’s most renowned Toji (sake master brewers), with a career spanning over 68 years, dating back to 1949. After retiring, he returned to the industry in 2017 to open the Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute, dedicated to mentoring future sake master brewers. Visitors can sample

Tea Ceremony

the institute’s diverse sake varieties in its special tasting room.

Kaga Onsen is a collection of four hot spring towns (onsen) located just south of Kanazawa, and not far from the 2 700-metre Mount Hakusan, one of Japan’s three holiest mountains. The hot springs were discovered over 1 300 years ago by monks visiting Mount Hakusan and have remained popular ever since. A distinctive characteristic of Kaga’s hot spring towns is their public baths (sento or soyu), found in the centre of each town. These bathhouses are open to all, and while it may take some time to get accustomed to the custom, bathing naked is the norm. Rest assured, however, that most public bathhouses are divided into separate men’s and women’s sections.

Experiencing traditional Japan

Aside from its public bathhouses, an integral part of visiting this part of Ishikawa is experiencing a traditional Japanese ryokan or inn. Ryokans typically feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and public areas where visitors usually wear nemaki (a unisex cotton Japanese robe, similar to a lounging kimono). Yamashiro Onsen is a typical traditional hot-spring resort town nestled in the foothills of Mt Hakusan, where visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of old Japan.

Another must-visit destination is nearby Yamanaka Onsen, a small resort town along the Kakusenkei Gorge. The hot-spring waters at Yamanaka Onsen are said to ease muscle

and joint pain, speed recovery from illness, and improve overall health. Visitors can bathe at Kikunoyu, Yamanaka’s public bathhouse, which has separate buildings for men and women in the town centre.

One last stop in Ishikawa, before catching the bullet train back to Tokyo, should be the beautiful Natadera Temple. Dramatic cliffs and rock formations tower over the temple’s unique buildings, serene mossy forests, traditional Japanese gardens, carp-filled ponds, and beautifully landscaped gardens. In 717, the Buddhist monk Taicho climbed nearby Mt Hakusan and, while meditating on the highest peak, was inspired to build Natadera. The temple’s wooden halls and pagodas are elaborately carved with zodiac animals, peonies, and chrysanthemums. In the main hall, a huge golden statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy and compassion, is a prominent feature.

If you’re planning to travel to Japan, spend some time in Ishikawa and fall in love with this golden part of Japan. IB

A CHECKLIST FOR financial wellness

YOUR FINANCIAL HEALTH IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELLBEING, YET IT’S SOMETHING WE RARELY ADDRESS WITH THE SAME LEVEL OF URGENCY.

Financial wellness plays a pivotal role in shaping our lives, impacting our sense of security, our ability to pursue our dreams, and even our mental health. That’s why it’s worth asking ourselves: are we financially okay? Here are some useful tips to ensure you’re not just surviving, but thriving.

Check and update your beneficiaries

If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that life changes unexpectedly. To secure your family’s financial future, keep your beneficiary nominations up to date. This ensures assets like insurance and pensions go to the right people.

Review your insurance coverage

Insurance provides peace of mind, but complexity can lead to over-insurance. If you drive less or own an older car, a basic policy may be sufficient. Having enough coverage is great, but excess cover should be cancelled. Even R200–R300 monthly savings can boost your financial goals.

Cancel unused subscriptions

Take a close look at your subscription expenses. Those monthly charges can add up quickly. If you’re no longer using that gym membership, rarely watch shows on multiple streaming platforms, or have forgotten about a premium app trial that’s now billing you, it’s time to reassess.

Resist the urge to upgrade unnecessary contracts or subscriptions

Your phone contract is coming to an end, and you’re being bombarded with upgrade offers. But your current phone still makes calls, runs WhatsApp, surfs the net, and takes decent photos. So, ask yourself: what will a newer model offer, besides another ongoing contract payment? That R500 could be better spent elsewhere.

Check your investment balances and performance

Just as we visit the GP for a routine health checkup, our investments need a regular financial check-up too. It’s essential to assess their financial health, because if left unchecked for too long, you might find it’s too late to make meaningful changes.

Use tools like retirement calculators

Planning for retirement requires regular check-ins to stay on track. Retirement calculators can help assess your progress by estimating your savings needs based on income, expenses, and long-term goals. If possible, consider making extra voluntary contributions.

Review your employer’s benefits summary

We often focus on work or a new role without fully understanding our benefits. Perks like retirement contributions, health insurance, and tuition reimbursement can greatly impact wellbeing. Reviewing them ensures that you maximise opportunities.

Revisit your budget

Dust off that Excel spreadsheet – or, in my case, a small black book – where income planning is recorded. And this year, let’s take it a step further. I’ve always been good at creating a budget but terrible at tracking whether my spending aligns with it. Let’s all do better at sticking to our budgets this year!

Small changes make a big difference

Adulting isn’t easy, and looking at this list may feel overwhelming. Luckily, all you need to ensure your financial wellness is consistency. If this feels like too much to keep track of, start with just one item and focus on it for six months before moving on to something else. IB

THESE 7 SIMPLE STEPS Beat debt with

WITH EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS LIKE GROCERIES, FUEL, AND ELECTRICITY SKYROCKETING, AND HIGH INTEREST RATES MAKING LOANS HARDER TO MANAGE, MANY SOUTH AFRICANS ARE FEELING THE STRAIN. AS MORE PEOPLE TURN TO CREDIT TO MAKE ENDS MEET, THE RISK OF DEEPER FINANCIAL DISTRESS GROWS.

Tej Desai, the CEO of Alefbet Collections & Recoveries – a group that includes companies like Shapiro Shaik Defries and Associations, Metro Revenue Collect, and ITC Business Administrators – points out that with interest rates staying high and many people already in debt, especially those with expensive, unsecured credit, it’s likely that more South Africans will continue to struggle as their debt payments stay high, alongside those ever-growing living costs.

“The most important step for any indebted consumer who is struggling to make their debt repayments is to proactively engage with their credit providers. Ignoring the debt or calls from collections agents will not make the debt go away and there are long term repercussions in terms of their financial inclusion and access to credit in future. Many people are oblivious to the impact of unpaid debt on their credit score and their ability to access credit – severely hindering their future ability to acquire finance for buying a home, vehicle or other big-ticket essentials,” explains Tej.

“Creditors are not oblivious to the impact of the current economic conditions and are open to renegotiating payment and credit terms where there is genuine financial distress and where debtors demonstrate a consistent willingness to pay. Indebted consumers should use this opportunity to reach out proactively and negotiate before they default and find themselves caught up in a costly and stressful legal collections process. Be a part of finding a workable solution with lenders that protects their financial integrity, credit worthiness, and especially their assets,” he adds.

Alefbet Collections & Recoveries offers these practical steps to manage your debt:

1. Engage with creditors

If you’re at risk of missing payments, reach out to your creditors early. Ignoring debt can lead to legal issues and harm your credit score. If contacted by a debt collector, work with them to negotiate a more manageable repayment plan.

2. Prioritise high-interest debt

Focus on paying off the debts with the highest interest first. Once one is settled, redirect those payments to the next debt to reduce interest costs.

3. Be cautious with home loan equity

Using home loan equity to consolidate debt can be risky. Ensure overdue payments are added to your consolidated debt to avoid deferring payments and incurring more interest.

4. Consider debt review

Debt review can take years, during which you can’t access new credit. Only proceed if it’s your last option, and make sure you work with a registered debt counsellor.

5. Cut back on non-essentials

Limit discretionary spending like dining out and subscriptions. Focus on budgeting for only the essentials.

6. Check for credit insurance

If retrenched, check if you have credit insurance to cover loan repayments for up to 12 months.

7. Protect your credit score

Engage with creditors early to prevent your debt from going into legal recovery, which could damage your credit score for years. A good credit score means better terms on future loans. IB

WEIRD BUSINESS TRAVEL REQUESTS AND What They Reveal

BUSINESS TRAVEL IS EVOLVING BEYOND LOGISTICS AS TRAVELLERS SEEK PERSONALISED, WELLNESS-FOCUSED EXPERIENCES THAT FIT THEIR ROUTINES AND PRIORITIES.

The business travel industry is growing, with 52% of companies planning to increase budgets in 2025, per GBTA research. But expectations are evolving, with travellers seeking work trips aligned to their routines and priorities.

“Travel managers are at the centre of these shifts,” says Rategang Moroke, Operations Manager at Corporate Traveller. “Requests reveal how business travel is evolving and where programmes must adapt. These aren’t one-off requests but signals of what truly matters to travellers.”

In 2024, Corporate Traveller polled managers to uncover the trends shaping business travel’s future.

The rise of wellness requests

One traveller called their travel manager with an unusual request: a scale in their hotel room. It wasn’t for luggage; it was to track their weight as part of their fitness programme. This traveller wasn’t an outlier. More and more people are trying to stick to personal health goals while travelling for work, whether that’s through gym access, healthier dining options, or simply maintaining balance.

What this reveals: Wellness matters. Travellers don’t want to leave their routines at home, and they expect business travel to accommodate their health as part of the experience.

Personal

preferences

shape the experience

Not all upgrades are welcome. One traveller declined a two-bedroom suite as too large for a solo trip, while another flagged specific meal requirements, needing vegetarian food without eggs or fish. These seemingly minor details are becoming essential. Travellers expect their preferences to be understood as necessities, not luxuries, for comfort and focus during trips.

What this reveals: Small preferences significantly impact how supported travellers feel. Whether it’s the right meals, rooms, or itinerary structure, these details build trust, enhance comfort, and reduce friction, making business travel more seamless and personalised.

Clarity matters, even for seasoned travellers

Even experienced travellers can feel overwhelmed. One asked their travel manager if their 10pm flight time out of São Paulo was already “converted” into the destination time zone. Another drove to the wrong London airport before frantically asking if the pilot could wait. They’re examples of how travel stress or tight schedules can lead to logistical confusion, no matter how seasoned the traveller is.

What this reveals: Schedules are overwhelming, and small details – like flight times, terminal

More and more people are trying to stick to personal health goals travellingwhile for work...

locations, or airport choices –add unnecessary stress if they aren’t made clear in advance.

Reassurance is as important as resolution

One traveller in London found themselves too overwhelmed to call their hotel’s front desk for luggage assistance. Instead, they phoned their travel manager in South Africa to help. On the surface, the request seems like overkill, but it highlights something all travellers face: stress.

What this reveals: It’s not just the big problems that travellers want help with. Even small tasks can feel monumental when you’re tired, working late, or far from home. Knowing that someone is there to help is invaluable. IB

Starting African Star Communications was my way of addressing a gap in the market. I wanted to create a platform that not only amplified the voices of African stars and brands but also helped them navigate the complexities of public relations with authenticity and impact.

What motivated me most was the desire to change perceptions and showcase the brilliance of African talent to the world. I believed in building a PR agency that could combine creativity, strategy and a deep understanding of the African market while also bridging the gap to international platforms.

How did you overcome challenges in the early stages of your business?

Establishing credibility was a major challenge, especially as a woman in a competitive PR industry. People often underestimated me, and I had to fight to be taken seriously. Financial constraints were also a hurdle, starting with just R1 000 and a laptop. I overcame these challenges through determination, clear vision, and a relentless belief in my mission. Delivering excellent results for clients built my reputation and trust in the industry.

How do you approach, build and maintain relationships with big clients?

Building relationships with big clients requires credibility, reliability, and a deep understanding of their needs and goals. I listen to their vision and challenges, tailoring my strategies to align with their objectives. Transparency and open communication are key; I keep clients informed about campaigns, media opportunities, and potential challenges. By going the extra mile, I become a partner in their success. This approach has helped me establish strong, lasting relationships with high-profile clients.

What was your experience working with well-known celebrities?

Working with well-known corporations and celebrities has been an incredible, dynamic experience. It’s a space that requires you to think fast, adapt quickly and manage high expectations.

Every client comes with their unique goals, and my job has been to find innovative ways to make those goals a reality. For celebrities, their brand is deeply personal, and any misstep can have significant repercussions.

What advice would you give to women looking to break into the business world?

My advice to women is to own your space unapologetically and always know your value. Build a strong support network, as it’s essential to have people who lift you up. Cultivate resilience to bounce back from setbacks, stay educated and remain adaptable to keep growing in an everchanging world. Advocate for yourself, and never underestimate the power of speaking up for your needs and goals. Finally, lead with integrity – let your values guide your decisions and actions, ensuring you stay true to yourself and your mission. IB

The art OF CURATION

TRANSFORMING LUXURY HOMES INTO PERSONAL SANCTUARIES

Luxury homes are more than just displays of wealth; they are deeply personal sanctuaries that reflect individuality and taste. The secret to elevating a space from exquisite to extraordinary lies in thoughtful curation, where every detail tells a unique story.

Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, explains: “Luxury living transcends mere opulence; it’s about creating a unique and deeply personal sanctuary. While opulent design, premium materials, and stateof-the-art amenities form the foundation of a high-end residence, personal touches and

thoughtful curation truly transform a house into a home.”

1. Custom artwork

Art should infuse a home with soul and uniqueness.

• Commissioned pieces: Work with artists to create one-of-a-kind works, such as paintings inspired by personal memories or sculptures

Luxury living transcends mere opulence; it’s about creating a unique and deeply personal sanctuary.

reflecting your own taste and values.

• Support local talent: Incorporate pieces from local artists to connect your home to its surroundings while supporting emerging talent.

• Architectural integration: Use sculptural staircases or intricate murals to blend art seamlessly into your home’s design.

2. Handcrafted furniture

Artisanal furniture adds elegance and storytelling to your space.

• Unique materials: Incorporate reclaimed wood, exotic stones, or handwoven textiles for character and warmth.

• Showstoppers: Pieces like Murano glass chandeliers or marble consoles elevate your design.

• Custom comfort: Collaborate with artisans to create furniture that balances beauty with functionality.

3. Bespoke design details

Tailored elements distinguish luxury homes.

• Custom millwork: Intricately carved mouldings or built-in shelving add charm and utility.

• Tailored fixtures: Use unique finishes like matte black or rose gold for an elevated aesthetic.

• Distinctive flooring: Incorporate handknotted rugs or inlaid hardwood patterns for depth and artistry.

4. Sentimental and heritage items

Personalisation often comes from meaningful pieces.

• Heirlooms: Antique furniture or artwork passed down through generations creates continuity.

• Travel treasures: Showcase Moroccan rugs or African sculptures to bring global adventures home.

• Personal memories: Commission portraits or display curated memorabilia to make your home uniquely yours.

5. Themed spaces

Each room should tell its own story while complementing the overall design.

• Libraries: Add custom bookshelves, vintage lighting and curated collections for a cosy retreat.

• Spa-like bathrooms: Use marble finishes, hand-painted tiles and designer fixtures to create serenity.

• Entertainment areas: Elevate home theatres or wine cellars with tailored seating and storage.

6. Timeless meets contemporary

Blend modern innovation with enduring elegance.

• Bold accents: Vibrant colours or textured statement pieces add personality to neutral spaces.

• Cutting-edge tech: Features like motorised curtains or integrated sound systems provide convenience.

• Timeless materials: Use marble, brass, or other enduring finishes for lasting style.

7. Expert collaboration

Professional designers or art curators bring expertise and access to exclusive pieces, ensuring your vision is flawlessly executed. Geffen concludes: “The golden rule is that every detail should resonate with your lifestyle and values. It’s about blending functionality with aesthetics, ensuring your home is as comfortable as it is beautiful.” IB

FRENCH FLAVOURS, South African soul

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF STELLENBOSCH, MILL ST BISTRO BRINGS TOGETHER FRENCH CULINARY TECHNIQUES AND SOUTH AFRICAN FLAVOURS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MICHELIN-STARRED CHEF, PHIL CARMICHAEL.

With a focus on seasonal, sustainable ingredients and a relaxed dining experience, Phil Carmichael’s unpretentious approach to food offers a comforting yet refined experience at Mill St Bistro, in the heart of the Winelands.

About Phil Carmichael

Chef Phil Carmichael began his culinary career as a teenage pot-washer at a village pub in Wales. He honed his skills under Michel Roux Jnr at Le Gavroche in London, mastering classic techniques and precision in a fast-paced environment.

He later became Senior Sous Chef at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze London and earned his first Michelin star as Executive Chef at Maze Prague. Phil then led Maze Cape Town at the One&Only, launched Esquina tapas bar in Singapore, and opened The Little Social in London.

From 2013, he served as Executive Chef at The London EDITION Hotel, heading the acclaimed Berners Tavern, which won the AA’s 2015 Restaurant of the Year award. After nearly a decade, he returned to SA to open Mill St Bistro in Stellenbosch.

Twice Welsh champion of the Great British Menu, Phil champions the best ingredients, simple dishes, and timeless techniques. At Mill St Bistro, he focuses on minimal intervention and connecting diners with farmers, fishermen, and their stories.

We asked Chef Carmichael about how his training at Le Gavroche shaped his approach, his passion for fermentation, and how he incorporates these influences into classical French cuisine.

What’s one thing you learned at Le Gavroche that you still do?

Try not to waste anything. Nothing in that kitchen went into the bin; it was always used for something. Put it in a stock or put it in a sauce. We never threw anything out. For me, that’s one thing I think all chefs should do.

How did you get into fermentation?

I’m addicted to buying cookbooks. I buy cookbooks on everything: different cuisines, different techniques. Then I came across a book called The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Katz, who’s known as the fermentation revivalist. He just blew me away. Once you start fermenting, it’s pretty difficult to stop.

What’s your favourite ferment?

Probably the simplest one: sauerkraut. It just shows what you can do with two ingredients and a bit of time.

Who gave you your best advice?

Nothing was verbally spoken, but watching my old man just get on with things and having the determination to keep moving forward, no matter what obstacles arose, was a valuable lesson.

How do your ferments work in classical French dishes?

Most ferments are acidic so they can replace any vinegar component. But ferments don’t replace anything; instead, they’re more like an addition. They give you another flavour profile to work with and another technique to try and harness and incorporate into your food.

Mill St Bistro sauerkraut recipe

South African summer features an abundance of everything: ingredients, tourists, and above all, customers. As the sun heads south and hides behind the mountains for the winter, seasonality can pose a challenge, but it’s in winter that Carmichael’s penchant for pickling truly comes into its own, across all dishes. Here, he shares his favourite, sauerkraut. “It’s so easy, just two ingredients.”

You’ll need a cabbage, some salt, and a fermentation vessel – a glass jar is perfect for home use.

1. Weigh the cabbage and work out 3% of the total weight in salt.

2. Finely shred with a sharp knife or a mandolin. (Watch your fingers.)

3. Add the salt to the shredded cabbage and massage mercilessly – really vigorously. After five or 10 minutes, a lot of liquid will come out. Keep massaging until no more liquid comes out. That’s your brine. Don’t throw it away!

4. Put the shredded cabbage in your fermentation vessel or jar; pack it in tightly to get rid of all the air and make sure it’s covered with the brine.

5. Place a “follower”* on the top, followed by the lid, and leave it for about a week.

6. Fermentation depends on the ambient temperature – the warmer it is, the faster it will ferment. Says Carmichael, “When it’s nice and sour and funky and pungent, it’s ready to rock and roll.” IB

* A follower is something you use to stop ingredients floating to the top. Chef Phil uses a cabbage leaf and the lid of the pot. You could also use a smaller jar as a weight.

BRAAIED PORK NECK STEAKS WITH

GRILLED SWEETCORN

INDULGE IN THE SMOKY FLAVOURS OF BRAAIED PORK NECK STEAKS, PAIRED PERFECTLY WITH JUICY, GRILLED SWEETCORN.

INGREDIENTS

• 6 pork neck steaks

• 2 tablespoons oil

• 3 tablespoons Robertsons Steak & Chops Spice

• 4 fresh sweetcorn on the cob

• 1 tablespoon oil

• Salt and pepper

To serve

• 6 teaspoons margarine (optional)

• 6 chives, finely chopped (optional)

METHOD

1. Prepare a medium-high heat braai. Drizzle the pork neck steaks with oil and season with Robertsons Steak & Chops Spice.

2. Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil and add the sweetcorn. Boil for 10 minutes, then remove and drain. Drizzle the sweetcorn with oil and season with salt and pepper.

3. Place the pork neck steaks and the sweetcorn on the braai; flip the steaks every minute or so for about 8-12 minutes, depending on their thickness. This technique of regular flipping helps build an even char all over the surface of the meat, while simultaneously not allowing too much heat to penetrate to the centre of the meat, keeping it juicy and moist. If you have a meat thermometer, cook to 63°C.

4. Rotate the sweetcorn occasionally to ensure it chars evenly. Note: the sweetcorn is cooked after boiling; placing on the grid is mainly to enhance flavour by adding a smoky taste. Pre-cooking reduces the time needed on the braai, ensuring the sweetcorn doesn’t dry out or overcook, while still achieving that perfect smoky char.

5. Dollop the sweetcorn with butter or margarine and garnish with chopped chives, if using. Serve the sweetcorn alongside perfectly cooked, juicy pork neck steaks for a delicious, well-rounded meal.

Dear Self, Fast-forward two years and one of those swipes – Andrew, 14 years your junior – has somehow turned into your digital pen pal. That’s right, a Tinder pen pal. Not exactly what you were looking for, but here you are, two years later, still WhatsApping this charming stranger who thinks you’re a total catch.

To this day, you’ve never actually met in person. Through all the highs and lows of life, you’ve somehow managed to be “there” for each other in a way that’s almost old-school – like the kind of pen-pal relationship, you’d have had in the ‘90s, but way more modern and digital. But let’s face it: Andrew may think you’re some untouchable goddess in her early 40s, but you’re just a gal with a sharp wit, a knack for storytelling, and a woman who knows how to turn a swipe into a two-year conversation. A little bizarre, a little heartwarming, and very on-trend.
