Orpheus McAdoo David Kramer’s
SOUTH AFRICAN THEATRE ICON DAVID KRAMER RETURNS THIS OCTOBER WITH ORPHEUS MCADOO, A CAPE TOWN OPERA PRODUCTION TELLING THE FORGOTTEN STORY OF AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN MINSTREL GROUP WHO CAPTIVATED SOUTH AFRICA OVER A CENTURY AGO.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
In the vibrant tapestry of South African music and theatre, few names shine as brightly as David Kramer. Renowned for his distinctive red veldskoene and deep commitment to local storytelling, Kramer has spent over four decades crafting works that mirror the soul and struggles of the nation.
Born in Worcester, Kramer gained prominence in the 1980s by incorporating volksliedjies (folk songs) into a pop-oriented music scene. His notable collaborations with the late Taliep Petersen, including District Six: The Musical and Kat and the Kings, have become landmarks in South African cultural history.
This October, he returns with Orpheus McAdoo, a musical written and directed by him for Cape Town Opera. The production tells the remarkable true story of Orpheus McAdoo and his Virginia Jubilee Singers, an African-American minstrel group who achieved extraordinary success in South Africa at the turn of the 20th century.
For Kramer, heritage is more than nostalgia – it is a duty. Through Orpheus McAdoo, he again uncovers a forgotten chapter of history, blending music, memory, and storytelling into a piece that honours resilience, cultural exchange, and the enduring power of song.
InboundSA sat down with Kramer to discuss heritage, hidden histories, and the making of his latest musical.
ORPHEUS MCADOO IS A CAPTIVATING FIGURE IN WORLD MUSIC HISTORY. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO HIS STORY, AND WHY NOW?
What drew me to Orpheus McAdoo’s story was a photograph of the Virginia Jubilee Singers’ visit to Cape Town in the 1890s. Who were they, and what had brought them to Cape Town at that time? I asked myself. I needed to learn more about this remarkable journey of these Black American artists who not only toured the world but also left
a lasting cultural mark on South Africa during a period of intense racial division. Orpheus McAdoo’s story feels urgent now because it reminds us that music can cross continents, challenge prejudice, and connect histories that are often spoken of in isolation.
HOW DID YOU APPROACH INTEGRATING HISTORICAL ACCURACY WITH THEATRICAL STORYTELLING IN THIS PRODUCTION?
By anchoring the narrative in documented events and real-life figures, I employ music, character development, and dramatic structure to evoke emotional truth. This method enables me to honour the legacy of McAdoo and his company while engaging audiences through a compelling theatrical experience.
THIS MUSICAL IS BEING STAGED BY CAPE TOWN OPERA; WHAT HAS THAT COLLABORATION BROUGHT TO THE PRODUCTION?
Partnering with Cape Town Opera has increased the scale and musical richness; world-class voices, a disciplined chorus, and orchestral resources allow McAdoo’s repertoire to resonate with authenticity and power. The collaboration blends my theatrical storytelling with an operatic depth of sound and craftsmanship, honouring history while providing a viscerally contemporary experience.
WHAT THEMES OR MESSAGES IN ORPHEUS MCADOO DO YOU BELIEVE WILL RESONATE MOST STRONGLY WITH SA AUDIENCES TODAY?
Themes of resilience, cultural pride, and the power of music to transcend boundaries are central to Orpheus McAdoo and will likely resonate strongly with South African audiences today. The story reflects the ongoing journey of reclaiming identity, confronting prejudice, and celebrating the legacy of Black excellence despite adversity; messages that remain as relevant now as they were in McAdoo’s era.
HOW DO YOU PERCEIVE ORPHEUS MCADOO’S ROLE WITHIN THE LARGER CELEBRATION OF SOUTH AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH?
By shedding light on a largely forgotten African American figure who profoundly impacted South Africa’s musical and cultural scene, the production not only rekindles a shared historical link but also prompts reflection on themes of migration, identity, and artistic influence that continue to shape South African heritage today.
MUCH OF YOUR BODY OF WORK HAS CONTRIBUTED TO PRESERVING AND RAISING AWARENESS OF SOUTH AFRICAN STORIES. WHAT ROLE DO YOU BELIEVE THEATRE AND MUSIC PLAY IN SAFEGUARDING CULTURAL MEMORY?
Theatre and music play a vital role in preserving cultural memory by giving voice to stories that might otherwise be forgotten, allowing communities to see themselves reflected on stage. They retain language, emotion, and lived experience in ways that history books often cannot, ensuring that the spirit of a people endures across generations.
YOU’VE WRITTEN AND DIRECTED NUMEROUS BELOVED SOUTH AFRICAN MUSICALS. HOW DID THE CREATIVE PROCESS FOR ORPHEUS MCADOO DIFFER FROM YOUR PREVIOUS PRODUCTIONS?
Unlike my earlier musicals, which often drew from personal memories, local folklore, and hidden political agendas, Orpheus McAdoo required engaging with archival research, reconstructing a global historical narrative, and adapting real events into theatrical form. The process was more investigative; piecing together McAdoo’s legacy from fragments, while also working with Cape Town Opera meant composing and arranging for operatic voices, which pushed me into new musical and dramatic territories.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUNGER GENERATIONS LEARN FROM ORPHEUS MCADOO DURING HERITAGE MONTH AND BEYOND?
A: I hope younger generations see Orpheus McAdoo as a reminder that their history is rich, global, and worth celebrating. Beyond Heritage Month, I want them to feel inspired by the courage and artistry of those who came before,
and to recognise the power of storytelling in shaping both identity and future.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR CAREER SO FAR, HOW HAS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF “HERITAGE” EVOLVED AND HOW DOES THIS NEW MUSICAL REFLECT THAT EVOLUTION?
My understanding of “heritage” has shifted from being something inherited to something actively shaped through stories told, voices raised, and histories reclaimed. Orpheus McAdoo exemplifies this change by reaching beyond borders to find a shared legacy, connecting South African audiences to a global story of Black artistry, resilience, and cultural pride.
WHAT
DOES HERITAGE MEAN TO YOU, AND WHAT DOES YOUR HERITAGE CONSIST OF?
To me, heritage encompasses the stories, struggles, and traditions that define us; transmitted not only through bloodlines but also through language, music, and memory. My heritage is made up of South African voices: rural and urban, Afrikaans and English, working- and middle-class—interwoven through song, storytelling, and a deep dedication to safeguarding the lived experiences of ordinary people. THE POWER OF Ubuntu at work
PROFESSOR NICOLENE SCHUTTE (NEE BARKHUIZEN) DISCUSSES HOW SOUTH AFRICA’S CULTURAL HERITAGE SHAPES TALENT MANAGEMENT TODAY. SHE TOUCHES ON THE ROLE OF CULTURAL IDENTITY IN THE WORKPLACE AND OFFERS PRACTICAL INSIGHTS ON HOW BUSINESSES CAN BALANCE MODERN CHALLENGES WITH HERITAGE VALUES FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE.
HOW DO YOU SEE SOUTH AFRICA’S CULTURAL HERITAGE INFLUENCING TALENT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN LOCAL ORGANISATIONS?
South Africa’s cultural heritage is more than history – it’s the heartbeat of how we should manage talent today. At the centre lies ubuntu – “I am because we are” – a philosophy that reminds us talent thrives not in isolation, but in community. This demands that organisations design systems which celebrate not only individual achievement, but also the power of collective contribution. Our diversity – twelve languages, rich traditions, and a history of resilience – offers a competitive edge. It has shaped us into a people who are adaptable, creative, and inclusive. But it also sets a responsibility for business leaders: to craft people practices that are sensitive to culture, that bridge generational expectations, and that advance transformation without sacrificing excellence. Too often, companies adopt “copy-paste” HR models from the West. These approaches overlook the unique dynamics of our context and risk diluting the very qualities that make our workforce extraordinary. By leaning into our own heritage, we have the chance to pioneer a uniquely African approach to talent management – one that roots workplaces in belonging and inclusivity, yet equips them to compete confidently on a global stage.
The truth is simple: Our cultural heritage is our greatest catalyst for unlocking human potential. If South African organisations embrace this, we won’t just keep pace with global trends – we will set new ones.
IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, HOW CAN BUSINESSES RESPECT AND INTEGRATE DIVERSE CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS TO
CREATE A MORE
INCLUSIVE WORKPLACE?
Businesses can only truly respect and integrate diverse cultural backgrounds when they move beyond compliance to consciousness. It’s not enough to tick boxes on diversity reports – we need to build workplaces where every employee feels seen, valued, and heard.
That begins with listening with intent – giving space for different cultural voices to shape how we work. Then, we need leaders with cultural intelligence, who can navigate differences with respect and adaptability. Our talent practices must also reflect this diversity – recruitment that looks beyond narrow criteria, recognition systems that honour both the individual and the collective. When organisations embrace that ethos, inclusion stops being a program and becomes a way of life. Inclusive workplaces don’t just feel better, they perform better.
WHAT ROLE DOES UNDERSTANDING HERITAGE PLAY IN SHAPING LEADERSHIP STYLES IN SOUTH AFRICAN COMPANIES?
For me, understanding heritage is what truly shapes leadership styles in South African companies, because it grounds us in the realities of our context. In a country defined by deep diversity and a complex past, heritage isn’t just about history – it’s the lens through which people understand authority, trust, and collaboration. As a leader, I’ve seen that for some employees, respect is rooted in hierarchy and tradition, while for others, it’s built through participation and shared voice. Being aware of heritage helps leaders balance these different expectations and adapt their style so that people feel both respected and included.
It also creates authentic leadership. When we as leaders draw on cultural narratives – whether it’s the resilience of our communities, the spirit of ubuntu, or the drive for transformation – we connect with people on a far more human level. And most importantly, heritage keeps our leadership from feeling imported or artificial. It anchors us in something uniquely South African, allowing us to bridge divides, inspire unity, and lead with both credibility and cultural resonance.
HOW CAN UNIVERSITIES INTEGRATE HERITAGE AND CULTURAL AWARENESS INTO THEIR COURSES TO BETTER PREPARE FUTURE LEADERS FOR DIVERSE WORKSPACES?
Cultural awareness in the classroom becomes cultural intelligence in the boardroom. Universities have a golden opportunity to shape future leaders by weaving heritage and cultural awareness directly into their curricula. For me, it starts with embedding African perspectives and case studies into leadership, management, and psychology courses – so that students can see themselves and their own context reflected in what they’re learning. I also believe in creating immersive experiences because that’s how students move beyond theory and start living diversity in practice. When education honours heritage, it produces leaders who are globally agile yet locally rooted. That’s how we prepare future leaders to not just manage diversity – but to thrive because of it.”
HOW CAN BUSINESSES LEARN FROM SOUTH AFRICA’S CULTURAL HISTORY
TO IMPROVE PEOPLE MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TODAY?
South Africa’s cultural history is a treasure chest of lessons for how we manage people and build organisations today. Our history of struggle, resilience, and ubuntu reminds us that people are far more than resources—they are the lifeblood of every organisation. One lesson is resilience. South Africans have a deep ability to adapt and rebuild in the face of adversity. Businesses can learn to design people management systems that don’t just focus on efficiency, but also on developing resilience, creativity, and adaptability in their workforce. Another lesson is inclusivity. Today, organisations must deliberately create inclusive structures, where employees of all backgrounds feel valued and heard. That’s not just morally right—it fuels innovation and trust. And finally, our heritage of ubuntu reminds us that success is collective. When businesses apply that principle—balancing individual recognition with shared achievement—they create cultures of loyalty, engagement, and long-term sustainability. So, in my view, if businesses take these lessons seriously, South Africa’s cultural history can be a blueprint for modern organisational development—rooted in people, strengthened by inclusivity, and driven by shared purpose.

LIKE THE REST OF SOUTH AFRICA, THE INBOUND SA OFFICE IS A LIVELY BLEND OF CULTURES, NATIONALITIES AND RACES. THIS HERITAGE MONTH, WE ASKED THE TEAM TO SHARE WHAT THEIR HERITAGE MEANS TO THEM, AND THE STORIES ARE AS DIVERSE AS THEY ARE.
At Inbound SA, our team is as diverse as the country we call home: a beautiful tapestry woven from different cultures, languages, and histories. This Heritage Month, we asked our colleagues to share what heritage means to them.
HERE I AM
As a person of colour, heritage often makes me uncomfortable. I can’t trace my family history with certainty. What I do know is that my great-grandmother arrived in South Africa on a boat from the island of St Helena. My gran would tell me how her mother worked on a farm and, one day, a very white baby with blue eyes was born. My maternal great-grandmother also had a child with an English man, a story that was always left hanging in mid-air. My grandparents were among those forcibly removed from District Six under apartheid laws. And here I am.
– Kim Kay
AN ISLAND GIRL IN CAPE TOWN
A PROUD TSWANA LADY
My heritage includes Botho, a value rooted in humility and respect for all people, all ethnicities, and all age groups. No matter where I go or how far I travel, this value always pulls me back, grounding me in a deep connection to home. I carry it with me at all times.
As I grow older, I find myself reflecting on the teachings of my mother, my grandmother, my aunts, and my village, because we believe it takes a village to raise a child. And in my case, it truly did.
Lest I forget, the ululations and joyful gatherings at home, especially weddings, bring me immense happiness. A real celebration isn’t complete without traditional food and plenty of meat. My favourite? Seswaa.
– Temo Mpodi
I’m a genuine island girl who found her rhythm in the rainbow nation! Born under Mauritian sunshine, where curry, creole, and countless cultures create the most delicious melting pot. But I’ve spent 21 brilliant years soaking up the South African spirit. From bonfires on Le Morne’s beach to braaing in the Mother City, I’ve collected the best of both worlds: Mauritian joie de vivre combined with that uniquely South African ubuntu. My heart beats to Sega rhythms while my soul sings Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I speak the language of roti and boerewors, understand both cyclone warnings and load-shedding schedules. Two African countries, one incredible journey, and a heritage as colourful as a Ndebele wall and as warm as a Cape Town sunset!
– Milou Staub
PROUDLY ROOTED IN MZANSI
I’m a coloured woman with a rich tapestry of cultures that define my existence. My lineage is extensive, with my ancestors originating from different parts of South Africa. I take pride in my heritage and ensure that future generations understand our diversity, not only in heritage but also in the versatility of Africans. From our food, music, fashion, and storytelling, I am proud to come from a country that recognises 12 official languages and is a melting pot of people from all walks of life. As a storyteller and patriotic citizen, I dedicate every fibre of my being to preserving the history of our people and places, deeply rooted here in Mzansi.
– Venecia Valentine
THE SPICE OF BELONGING
My heritage is Hindu Indian, passed down through generations who made South Africa their home. To me, it’s all about connection – to my family, my roots, and my culture. It’s the laughter at family gatherings, the joy of dressing up for festivals, the comfort of traditional food, and the values I was raised with: respect, kindness, and family.
My heritage is the smell of spices in the kitchen, the colourful celbrations, the stories shared by elders, and the balance between holding on to tradition and embracing the diverse cultures around me.
It reminds me where I come from, keeps me grounded, and gives me something beautiful to share – a piece of who I am.
– Juhi Rampersad
SCATTERLINGS OF AFRICA
Coming from a diverse heritage, I’ve often wondered what it truly means whether it’s DNA or the social influences that shape us. Nature or nurture? I now see it as a blend of both, plus whatever makes me uniquely myself (if such a thing exists). My dad was a firstgeneration Indian South African; my mum, second-generation, with Indian, San, St Helenian, and German ancestry though some may be family lore. Still, I’m proud of all of it. My heritage also lies in our shared past, this continent we call home. As the anthropologists (and Johnny Clegg) say, we’re all scatterlings of Africa. But it’s my wild, loving family, immediate and extended, that’s shaped me most. From them, I’ve gained my best (and maybe some of my worst) traits. We’re human, but also part of something greater.
– Samiena Amien
IN THE SHADOW OF FRANSCHHOEK
The Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek features a plaque engraved with the names of many French Huguenot settlers who arrived at the Cape, and there lies the name of my ancestor. My father tells me that two brothers left their homeland, fleeing religious persecution, and settled in the Cape Colony. Though you shouldn’t feel too sorry for them – unlike the average refugee today, they were well received and given land to cultivate. Being white, it’s hard to celebrate, well, my whiteness. Though I can see the influence of my ancestors very clearly (I mean, the name is on a plaque and a wine farm), you need to look harder to see the darker side. So, what should you do when asked to write about celebrating your heritage? Instead, I look to my mum, who taught me to be a good person to everyone, to fight for what I believe in, and to never take my privilege for granted. And maybe have a glass of wine.
– Charis Torrance
THAT’S MOS LEKKER
My heritage isn’t something you dust off for Heritage Day – it’s woven into the everyday, like the smell of fresh koesisters on a Sunday morning, still warm and sticky with syrup.
As a person of colour, my heritage carries the flavours, sounds, and sayings passed down through generations. We’re talking about braais that start with an “Awe”. We have weddings where the aunties outdance the youngsters, and Christmas lunches where the gammon shares table space with a pot of curry.
Our language is a mashup masterpiece; part Afrikaans, part English, with a pinch of slang only we understand (“Yoh, that’s mos lekker, man”). Growing up here, you learn that music is more than background noise; it’s the heartbeat of our homes from old-school jazz to kwaito beats.
My heritage is about resilience with a wink, about finding joy in small moments, and about never leaving someone’s home without being offered tea — even if it’s 10pm.
It’s loud, colourful, proudly mixed. Just like me.
– Byron Lukas

So, in honour of Heritage Month, we celebrate the innovators who have turned challenges into triumphs.
PAY IT FORWARD, ONE SNAP AT A TIME
Founded by Kobus Ehlers, SnapScan has achieved something truly remarkable: it has transformed the way South Africans make payments. Since its launch in 2013, SnapScan has been a pioneer as one of the first mobile payment apps in South Africa offering locals a seamless, contactless way
to pay for everything from groceries to tithes at church.
Over the years, the company has continued to push boundaries, integrating finance with technology to improve convenience. “It’s about solving contextually relevant problems,” says Michael Thomson, head of marketing. What makes SnapScan even more legendary is its commitment to supporting communities. From empowering car guards with digital tips to eliminating cash payments on Stellenbosch University’s campus, SnapScan stays as local as it gets.
Michael explains, “We draw inspiration from our South African heritage and strength from our local roots, solving local problems.”
FROM FARM WORKER TO WINEMAKER EXTRAORDINAIRE
Meet Paul Siguqa, the proud owner of Klein Goederust, the first 100% Black-owned wine farm in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley. Acquired by the Siguqa family in 2019, the farm boasts a rich heritage dating back to 1905.
Paul’s journey began in the vineyards of the Cape
Winelands, where his mother worked as a farm labourer. Her dedication inspired him to build something greater: a wine farm founded on a sense of community. “My inspiration has been ordinary farm labourers like my mother,” he shares.
quickly became a household name.
“We make fun of loadshedding instead of complaining,” says Herman. EskomSePush was able to turn something as inconvenient as loadshedding into a shared experience. The app’s communitydriven approach helps South Africans stay connected, even when the lights go out. And with the app now developing into a community forum, EskomSePush continues to embody the camaraderie that characterises the South African spirit. “South Africans deal with a lot, but we’re a resilient bunch,” says Herman.
Klein Goederust isn’t just about wine; it’s about honouring history while shaping a future of excellence. From the moment you step onto the farm, you’re not just visiting a winery; you’re experiencing a rich part of South Africa’s history.
“Our brand is rooted in the values of ubuntu,” Paul says, and that’s the true flavour of Klein Goederust.
SHINING A LIGHT ON LOADSHEDDING
When Herman Maritz and Dan Wells launched EskomSePush in 2014, it wasn’t just about monitoring loadshedding; it added South African flavour to a common challenge. Born from a playful sense of humour and a deep understanding of the frustration of power cuts, it
COOK UP A REVOLUTION, ONE BAG AT A TIME
Sarah Collins’ Wonderbag is both innovative and impactful. Created out of a practical need to cook during South Africa’s frequent power outages, the Wonderbag has become a gamechanger for many, especially those in underprivileged communities.
This heat-retention cooking bag, inspired by the ancient techniques of the Khoi San, has become an essential part of numerous South African kitchens.
For Collins, Wonderbag is very personal. “Being born during Apartheid has had a big influence on my life and career choices,” she shares, showing how social justice and equality have shaped the brand’s purpose.
Collins’ vision is clear: to put a Wonderbag into the hands of every woman in Africa at an affordable price. In 2020, as the world struggled with the pandemic, Wonderbag rose to the challenge by
producing over 60 000 non-electric slow cookers, demonstrating how timely and transformative the product is.
“Wonderbag is a celebration of these women, created by South African women for African women,” Collins reflects. With its profound impact both locally and internationally, Wonderbag is undoubtedly transforming lives, one meal at a time.
UNITING SOUTH AFRICA, ONE JERSEY AT A TIME
Born from a deep love for sport and South African culture, brothers Daneel and Stef Steinmann’s passion project quickly grew into something much bigger: a symbol of unity that brings South Africans together through their shared love for rugby, football, and all things homegrown. From the very outset, Old School’s founders aimed to create something that connected with their community.
“Sport was a way of life,” says Daneel, reflecting on how their childhood obsession with sports brought people together. The iconic old-school rugby jersey became their symbol for uniting the nation. “It’s not just about what we were making; it was about what it meant to the people wearing it.”
Old School’s ethos of bringing people together through sport is woven into every product, every stitch. As they say, “Whether it is because it reminds them of a team they love, a moment they will never forget, or just the feeling of belonging, that pride is what keeps us going.” And that pride is what makes Old School so unforgettable.
KNIT TOGETHER WITH CULTURE AND CRAFT
Laduma Ngxokolo’s MaXhosa brand is a genuine masterpiece in the world of fashion. What started as a way to create heritage-inspired clothing for Xhosa initiates has evolved into an internationally
recognised label, celebrated for its vibrant knits and striking patterns.
Ngxokolo was deeply influenced by the Xhosa cultural practice of ulwaluko, which inspired him to blend traditional symbols and craftsmanship into contemporary, stylish garments.
“I was deeply inspired by the beauty of our cultural symbols, artifacts, and the artistry that defines us,” he says. And that’s exactly what
AND INNOVATION
When Aisha Pandor and Alen Ribic founded Sweepsouth in 2014, it wasn’t just about creating a platform for booking home cleaning services. It was about addressing a real problem: how difficult it was to find reliable, professional cleaning assistance when they needed it most.
What began as a simple idea rapidly expanded into something much larger: an online platform that not only provides convenience but also creates genuine opportunities for domestic workers who were often ignored and underpaid.
MaXhosa does: it celebrates Xhosa culture while elevating it for the modern world.
“Being a proudly African brand means showing up authentically,” Laduma explains, and MaXhosa embodies that ethos in every thread. From the colours to the patterns, each piece tells a story.
CLEANING UP WITH UBUNTU
Today, Sweepsouth is led by CEO Lourandi Kriel. “We support SweepStars with care, connection, and mutual respect,” Lourandi states. For her, it’s all about ubuntu, the sense of community and mutual support that permeates every part of the business.
“Being a Proudly South African brand means building something with heart,” Lourandi explains. Sweepsouth is rooted in the values of dignity, opportunity, and empowerment.
As a women-led business, it’s also a shining example of what’s possible when innovation and social impact unite. IB

Our heritage stories
INBOUND SA CONNECTED WITH SOUTH AFRICAN ENTERTAINERS TO EXPLORE THEIR HERITAGE STORIES. WE ASKED THE QUESTION: “WHAT’S IN YOUR DNA AND WHAT MAKES UP YOUR HERITAGE?”
NELISIWE SIBIYA, ITHONG ACTRESS
I inherited everything from both my parents: the Sibiya family and the Mngomezulu family. Everything I have inherited from humanity, witchcraft, musical gifts, and even the land in KwaZulu and ESwatini, with their rich diversity, makes me uNelisiwe Sibiya. The person I am today is moulded by the heritage of my ancestors, who ensured it was passed down from generation to generation, just as I am doing now.
People often regard me as a typical Zulu girl because I am seen as a Zulu maiden by how I carry myself and live my life. The truth is, we (I’ll speak specifically about us as Black people) are gradually losing touch with our roots as everything becomes modernised, but I am fortunate to remain connected to my heritage and culture while still embracing modern living.
JIMMY NEVIS, SINGER
To me, the word “heritage” is where the past, present and future come together. I often think of my parents and their sacrifices. I think of my story and how it’s evolving into my ancestors’ wildest dreams. As I grow older, I consider what I do today and how it shapes the next generation.
So much of growing up involves returning to self, and every day, every song, every big moment in my life is a testament to that. My heritage is much more than skin colour, koeksisters and kombuis Afrikaans. Beneath the surface, I come from a long line of warriors, activists and game changers. It is part of my genetic makeup. I am proud to be a coloured black South African – forever expanding and reconnecting with myself.
DEIRDRE WOLHUTER, SKEMERGROND ACTRESS
I was born in Canada to a Canadian mother and a South African father, but I have lived most of my life in South Africa. I see heritage as my family history, the stories and personalities of past generations that have shaped those who followed. Heritage, in this context, means certain personality traits, specific values, rituals, and family customs that are part of my essence.
DIRK STOLTZ, SKEMERGROND ACTOR
For me, heritage is about where I come from and what my parents and their ancestors have passed down to me, not just in my blood but in the way I live. As a middle-aged South African man, it’s the blend of European roots and South African life.
It’s the stories my family shared, the food we eat, the language we speak, the values I was raised with, and the country I call home. It’s also about being honest about the country’s history, both the good and the painful, and reflecting on how that has shaped the person I aim to be today. As my background is German, much of my DNA traces back to Europe.
That means my ancestors likely came from German regions, carrying specific traditions, appearances, and traits. Over time, however, that bloodline became part of the broader South African story, blending with influences from other European settlers and, in some cases, the rich diversity of this country I love and call home.
TASHREEQ DE VILLIERS, KELDERS VAN GEHEIME ACTOR
To me, heritage includes the traditions left by my ancestors, which also form a vital part of my culture as a Cape Malay Coloured in this vibrant rainbow nation.
So, I would say Kaapse Klopse, Malay Choirs, my Malay slang, the food we prepare and enjoy, the way we dress, and even our religious beliefs. My DNA is as diverse as this country; my great-grandfather is of French descent, that’s where I got the surname De Villiers, with a silent “S”, and on the other side, I have Bengal, Malaysia, with some Indian influence, as well as the infamous San clan. All of this contributes to who I am, Tashreeq De Villiers, also known as Ricky Vani Frontline.
STHANDIWE KGOROGE, SHAKA ILEMBE ACTRESS
My heritage as a Zulu woman is a rich tapestry woven from ancestral wisdom, the pride of the Zulu people, a beautiful language, and a deep connection to the community that raised me. It includes storytelling traditions of izinganekwane (legends) passed down through generations, a language centred on respect, in how we greet one another with Sawubona (“I see you”), and how we embrace each other in times of grief. My heritage is rich, vibrant, and historical. I’m proud to be Zulu – a nation that is respectful and respected.

ON FATHERHOOD, FERTILITY, AND FINANCE
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
No stranger to the South African comedy scene, Durban-based comedian Carvin Goldstone is back with a bang (and a baby!) in his latest one-man show, My New Debit Order. In this fresh and humorous set, Carvin takes the audience on a personal journey through the trials and triumphs of becoming a father again in his 40s.
With his signature wit and honesty, he explores the emotional rollercoaster of fertility treatments, sleepless nights with a newborn, and the evergrowing list of expenses that come with raising children.
We caught up with carvin to chat about comedy, coping and the humour of parenthood.
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR COMEDY CAREER?
I saw a school play when I was 10 and realised I wanted to be on stage.
WHEN WAS YOUR COMEDY BREAKTHROUGH?
When I was 21, my work colleagues encouraged me to enter a comedy competition, and I won.
IF YOU WEREN’T A COMEDIAN, WHAT WOULD BE?
I worked as a journalist for 14 years and a musician for six years. So, it’s somewhere in there.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR COMEDY ROUTINES FRESH?
I keep having more children with large age gaps, so even when the older ones are out of fashion, the younger ones keep me updated.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE COMIC (LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY)?
KG Mokgadi from Cape Town has a great comedic mind, and Jim Gaffigan remains my favourite internationally.
WHAT DOES YOUR FAMILY THINK OF YOUR JOKES?
They used to think I was just dad and not funny, but now that they’ve all tried, they love what I do.
THE BIGGEST ‘WOW’ MOMENT OF YOUR COMEDY CAREER WAS…
In 2015, I was invited on an international tour. Australian promoters approached me about performing in Perth, and I asked, ‘But who’d come see me?’ They replied, ‘You’ll be surprised; you have many fans here.’ We announced the show, and it quickly drew interest. MSC had been trying to get me onboard as the resident comedian for the South African season, so when I resigned, they immediately signed me, and it’s been 10 years! IB

Fagrie Isaacs:
CAPE TOWN’S SOULFUL VOICE AND CULTURAL AMBASSADOR
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS IN STRANDFONTEIN TO SERENADING CAPE TOWN WITH SOULFUL ANTHEMS, FAGRIE ISAACS HAS BECOME A VOICE OF HERITAGE, HEART AND HOPE. DISCOVER HOW THIS MUSICAL ICON IS TURNING TRIBUTES INTO TIMELESS CULTURAL MOMENTS.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
In Cape Town’s vibrant musical scene, few voices convey as much heart and history as Fagrie Isaacs. Known affectionately as the “Luther Vandross of Cape Town”, Fagrie has built a career spanning nearly forty years, blending gospel, soul, and R&B with deeprooted Cape culture. From humble beginnings to performing on both national and international stages, his journey is one of talent, perseverance, and community spirit.
FROM SCHOOL CHOIR TO CENTRE STAGE
Fagrie started singing in school as a young boy, where his powerful voice first found expression. Over time, he evolved into a celebrated solo artist, recognised for his moving tribute shows, Here and Now and The Ultimate Love Song Collection. These performances gained him national recognition, with fans praising his ability to honour Vandross’s legacy while making each note distinctly his own.
In 2023, Fagrie delivered a memorable performance at the Hillsongs Church in Century City, joined by renowned local artists Andrea Fortuin and Karin Kortjie. The concert paid tribute to soul legends like Peabo Bryson and Vandross, with Fagrie’s emotive delivery leaving audiences captivated.
THE BIRTH OF A CITY’S ANTHEM
But 2025 marked a pivotal moment in his career with the release of The Cape Town Song. Originally requested as a podcast jingle, the project developed into an anthem for the city. Featuring goema rhythms and lyrical imagery of Bo-Kaap and the Cape Flats, the track captures
the city’s heartbeat. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis endorsed it as a cultural anthem, affirming Fagrie’s position as an authentic voice of Cape Town.
Reflecting on his musical influences, Isaacs shared with Inbound SA: “The song ‘Impossible Dream’… made me feel something no other song ever did… it struck my soul.” About paying tribute to Vandross, he said, “I close my eyes, and truthfully, I’m listening to Luther himself.”
MORE THAN MUSIC
Fagrie is more than a performer; he’s a storyteller, a cultural custodian, and a connector of generations. His music is a powerful celebration of Cape Town’s diversity, resilience, and soul. IB
SMELLS LIKE A REVOLUTION
On 24 September 1991, Nirvana flipped the music world on its head with the release of Nevermind. Packed with grunge anthems like “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Come as You Are”, and “Lithium”, the album catapulted Kurt Cobain and crew into rock royalty. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind didn’t just make noise, it sparked a cultural revolution, bringing alternative rock to the mainstream and giving flannel shirts a serious fashion moment.
TUPAC’S FINAL VERSE
American rap icon Tupac Shakur died from his injuries on 13 September 1996, six days after being shot in a drive-by while cruising through Las Vegas. Thirteen bullets tore through his BMW, in what many believe was fallout from the infamous East-West Coast hip-hop feud. Tupac’s legacy –equal parts poet, provocateur, and revolutionary – still resonates today, proving that his voice was too powerful to silence, even in death.

BOLD SWINGS & BIG WINS:
GARY PLAYER’S GRAND SLAM LEGACY
THIS HERITAGE MONTH, WE TEE OFF WITH SOUTH AFRICA’S ORIGINAL SPORTING ICON. FROM GOLD MINES TO GRAND SLAMS, GARY PLAYER’S JOURNEY IS ONE OF GRIT, GRACE, AND GREENS. DISCOVER HOW THE BLACK KNIGHT SHAPED GLOBAL GOLF – AND LEFT A LEGACY ROOTED DEEP IN MZANSI SOIL.
BY BYRON LUKAS
When we talk about heritage in Mzansi, it’s easy to picture pap and chakalaka, isicathamiya harmonies, and the ageold bakkie debate (Hilux or Ranger?). But one name that’s driven straight into the heart of South Africa’s sporting legacy with the precision of a perfectly timed 3-iron is Gary Player.
Yes, that guy. The man in black. The golf world’s original ninja. The only bloke who conquered majors on three continents and still found time to design some of the most beautiful golf courses on the planet. If South African heritage had a handicap, Gary would beat it comfortably.
FROM GOLD DUST TO GOLF DOMINATION
Born in 1935 in Johannesburg, when petrol cost cents and TikTok was still just a nervous twitch, Gary’s beginnings were far from lavish. His father worked deep underground in the gold mines, and Gary lost his mother at a young age. But like a bad lie in a bunker, hardship only sharpened his resolve.
At 14, Gary picked up his first golf club. At 17, he turned pro. And by his mid-20s? A global golf sensation. He became the youngest player of his era to complete golf’s Grand Slam – winning The Masters, The Open, the PGA Championship, and the US Open.
Only five people in history have achieved that.
Gary was the first non-American to do it in the 20th century. While the rest of the world was dancing to Chubby Checker, Gary was stacking major titles like they were black jackets on sale.
THE BLACK KNIGHT IN FULL SWING
Nicknamed The Black Knight, not because he jousted, but because he wore head-totoe black on the green, Gary was always as strategic as he was stylish. Intimidating? You’d better believe it. Just ask anyone trailing him on the leaderboard.
But beyond the swagger and the swing, Gary has always been more than a sharp dresser. His legacy runs deeper than the rough at Leopard Creek.
GARY’S GREEN EMPIRE
While most golfing legends retire quietly after a few major wins, Gary went on to become the Beyoncé of course design –dropping hit layouts across the globe like platinum albums.
He’s designed over 400 golf courses worldwide, with many of his most iconic creations right here in South Africa.
Ever played at Sun City’s Gary Player Country Club? That’s him. The Links at Fancourt? Also him. Erinvale, Arabella, Zimbali? All Gary.
These aren’t just championship layouts, they’re part of South Africa’s golfing heritage, places where natural beauty meets precision, and where sport becomes storytelling.
A TROPHY ROOM FOR HIS TROPHY ROOMS
Gary Player’s career résumé reads like a collector’s dream:
• Over 165 professional wins
• 24 PGA Tour victories
• 73 Sunshine Tour titles (still the record)
• Recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga (Gold) –South Africa’s highest civilian honour
• Presidential Medal of Freedom (USA)
• World Golf Hall of Fame inductee since 1974
He’s also received multiple honorary doctorates, lifetime achievement accolades, and probably deserves a “Best Dressed in Black Since Johnny Cash” award, too.
THE MAN WHO MADE GOLF COOL
Before Ernie “Big Easy” Els or Retief “Smooth Swing” Goosen, there was Gary, carving fairways from Augusta to St. Andrews. He didn’t just open doors for South African golfers; he kicked them down and rolled out the green carpet.
Today’s stars like Thriston Lawrence, Dean Burmester, and up-and-coming talent Caitlyn Macnab walk on greens paved by his legacy. Many owe their start to the Gary Player Foundation, which still champions youth development and education across South Africa.
STILL SWINGING, STILL SMILING
At 89, Gary has more energy than your cousin’s preworkout shake. While most pensioners are perfecting crossword puzzles, Gary’s out there mentoring the next generation, doing charity work, globe-trotting, and likely still shooting under par just to show the kids how it’s done.
Seriously, someone get this man a lifetime energy drink deal. Gary: now with 100% more swing.
A HERITAGE ICON WHO WEARS IT WELL
As we honour Heritage Month, let’s salute the man who made black-on-black cool long before Instagram filters, the man who transformed tragedy into triumph, fairways into legacies, and golf swings into inspiration.
Thank you, Gary Player – a true icon of South African heritage. IB

BY BYRON LUKAS
While the digital world races ahead at the speed of algorithms, South Africa’s creative scene is pausing to reflect. Let’s take a provinceby-province journey through the works that are transforming history into living art.
EASTERN CAPE: XHOSA BEADWORK TRANSFORMED
Traditional Xhosa motifs (including beaded collars, cloaks, and initiation markings) are being transformed into mixed-media artworks that connect the ceremonial with the modern. Vibrant artworks celebrate coming-of-age rituals and lineage, often through large-scale acrylics and textile-infused canvases displayed in galleries and community centres across Mthatha and beyond.
WESTERN CAPE: HONOURING KHOISAN ROOTS
Drawing on the natural colours of sandstone cliffs and Karoo dust, visual artists in the Western Cape are honouring Khoisan heritage. Photographic series and mineral-based paintings emphasise rituals, ancient tools, and ostrich-shell adornments, casting the region’s oldest cultures in a new, reverent light.
significance from royal lineages to the legacy of Lesotho’s cultural ties to South Africa’s heartland.
KWAZULU-NATAL: ORAL TRADITION IN VISUAL FORM
Zulu oral storytelling is portrayed through large charcoal murals, sculptural dance poses, and photographic tableaux. Folktales such as uNomkhubulwane and legendary warrior sagas are brought to life, often midmovement, in dramatic monochrome or vibrant technicolour.
FREE STATE: BASOTHO BLANKETS AS CANVAS
The Basotho blanket, rich in symbolism and colour, takes centre stage in textiles, installations, and portrait-based fine art. These works transform woven warmth into assertions of pride – layered with historic
LIMPOPO: VENDA SYMBOLISM IN CLAY
In Limpopo, sculptural traditions rooted in Venda spirituality are experiencing a revival. Clay works engraved with Tshivenda proverbs and sacred patterns reflect a worldview where ancestral guidance influences the present. These tactile pieces, often exhibited in cultural villages and eco-museums, foster deep connections to land, language, and legacy.
MPUMALANGA: NDEBELE GEOMETRY IN MOTION
Ndebele house-painting traditions have expanded from homesteads to galleries, fashion, and urban environments. The distinctive symmetry and colour-blocking of Ndebele mural art pulse with renewed vitality, merging ancestral designs with modern expression. Murals in Siyabuswa and Middelburg are particularly worth a visit.
GAUTENG: WALL MEETS LEGACY
Johannesburg’s cityscape bursts with murals blending Tswana and Sotho iconography with street art style. Here, walls do more than decorate – they record history. Cowhide shields, initiation spears, and ancestral totems appear in striking spray-painted symbols, creating a visual archive of genealogy.
NORTH WEST: SETSWANA THREADS IN PAINT
In the North West, oil paintings showcase the intricate details of ceremonial Setswana attire –from beaded headdresses to leatherwork. These portrait-style artworks act as both artistic homage and historical record, capturing visual elements of identity often transmitted orally or through generations.
NORTHERN CAPE: EARTH AS MEDIUM
In Namaqualand, art intersects with archaeology. Artists employ ochre, salt, and rock pigments to portray trance dances and reinterpret ancient rock art. Experimental photography, including salt-print techniques, revitalises endangered languages like N|uu, transforming each piece into a tangible connection between past and present.
A LIVING ARCHIVE
Across provinces, these artworks are much more than mere decoration – they serve as documentation. From galleries in the Cape to driving past murals along the Jozi streets, remember: every stitch, brushstroke, and sculpted form narrates a story. One of a nation woven together by art, ancestry, and cultural continuity. IB

BEFORE BOTOX, THERE WAS TALLOW
IMAGINE YOUR GREAT-GREAT-GRANDMOTHER PUTTING SOMETHING ON HER SKIN THAT MADE IT GLOW, PROTECTED IT FROM HARSH WEATHER, HEALED SCARS AND KEPT IT SOFT AND HEALTHY. ANCIENT AFRICANS, BABYLONIANS, VIKINGS, GREEKS, ROMANS, CHINESE EMPERORS, AND NATIVE AMERICANS ALL USED THIS SAME INGREDIENT FOR SKINCARE. WHAT WAS IT? TALLOW – AND IT'S BEEN WAITING FOR US TO REMEMBER ITS POWER.
WHAT IS TALLOW?
Tallow is simply rendered fat from animals, most commonly from cows. The highest quality skincare tallow comes from kidney fat, called suet, which has the richest concentration of skin-nourishing vitamins. This ancient ingredient was humanity's go-to skincare solution for thousands of years. But in the early 1900s, skincare companies began using petroleumbased ingredients because they were cheaper, lasted longer, and suited mass production. These mineral oils help seal in moisture but don't actually nourish the skin. What’s been forgotten in the last century is how much better tallow works with our bodies.
WHY YOUR SKIN LOVES TALLOW
Your skin is like a puzzle, and tallow is the perfect missing piece. As an animal fat, tallow is remarkably similar to human sebum, the natural oils your skin produces. This biocompatibility means tallow speaks your skin's language.
When you apply regular lotion, it sits on top, like water on a raincoat. But tallow penetrates deeply because your skin recognises and welcomes it. It’s not fighting to get in; it belongs there.
5 REASONS WHY TALLOW IS SKINCARE GOLD
It penetrates the skin like no synthetic moisturiser can. Natural vitamin A smooths wrinkles and evens skin tone. It calms irritation and repairs damaged skin. It strengthens your skin's natural defences. Your skin recognises and welcomes it immediately.
WHY TALLOW IS MAKING A COMEBACK
Modern consumers are rediscovering that nature often knows best. Tallow skincare offers deep nourishment, calms irritation, heals dry or cracked skin, smooths rough texture, and strengthens the skin's natural barrier for better hydration and protection. In our chemical-heavy world, this return to ancestral wisdom offers genuine skin transformation through ingredients our bodies actually recognise and can use effectively.
Sunny Farms Organics creates handmade tallow creams using grassfed South African beef tallow blended with nourishing botanical oils. Scan the QR code to stand a chance to win a Sunny Farms Organics gift!

Jessica Van HeerdeN's
REVLON REIGN
REVLON’S ULTIMATE IT GIRL, JESSICA VAN HEERDEN, SPILLS HER SPRING BEAUTY MUST-HAVES, SKINCARE SECRETS, AND THE GLOW-UP POWER OF “EATING YOUR SKINCARE”.
BY TEMO MPODI
Being seen and chosen by a brand in today’s era speaks volumes about how well an individual embodies its values. More than that, it reflects the charisma, influence, and appeal they bring to the brand’s vision.
Content creator and beauty influencer Jessica Van Heerden exemplifies this through her ongoing alignment with Revlon, consistently representing its essence with authenticity, style, and a touch of glamour.
CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING REVLON’S ULTIMATE ‘IT’ GIRL. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
Revlon has always been a staple in my makeup bag, and I’ve been working with Revlon on campaigns for around 10 years. It truly means so much that I can pursue my passion for beauty and create stunning content to showcase incredible products.
Revlon has always been the ‘it girl’, making us feel like the women we aspire to be!
YOU PERFECTLY EMBODY REVLON’S FLAIR. WHAT ELSE CONNECTS YOU TO THE BRAND?
The brand inspires us to live boldly, but it gives us the confidence to be our most authentic selves. I feel most myself when I look presentable; if I look good, I feel good, and I can give my best to others.
WHICH PRODUCT KEEPS YOU EFFORTLESSLY ELEGANT AND ONTREND?
Revlon Glimmer Blush Drops are fantastic! It’s almost like a stain, so my cheeks glow all day. I also use it on my eyes for an easy, quick makeup look.
SKIN BARRIER REPAIR IS SUCH A VITAL. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR THIS?
Healthy skin is part of a glowing makeup look, and for about six months, I couldn’t wear makeup because I was dealing with a compromised skin barrier. I experienced multiple flare-ups, often caused by bacteria lurking in our makeup, so disinfecting makeup and brushes is essential. Sadly, I had to throw away all my makeup and start with a fresh bag. I began to heal my skin barrier from the inside out. Don’t underestimate the importance of “eating your skincare”.
HAVE YOU DISCOVERED ANY NEW BEAUTY RECOMMENDATIONS THAT ARE WORKING FOR YOU?
The jelly disappearing face masks give you a glowing complexion – it’s unbelievable! Give it a go. I’m always discovering new products. Check out my vlogs. I’m a maximalist when it comes to beauty products. I looooove my products and trying out new ones.
WHO IS THE ULTIMATE STANDOUT BEAUTY GURU FOR YOU AT THE MOMENT?
Joh, I follow so many; the girls are doing their thing. My algorithm is very happy. But I’m not really into “beauty gurus,” per se; I love watching everyday girlies do everyday makeup looks.
What’s your best beauty hack?
Sleep! IB
I love watching everyday girlies do everyday makeup looks.

Refresh, Renew, and Rebalance Your Routine
AS WE BID FAREWELL TO THE DRY, LACKLUSTRE DAYS OF WINTER, SPRING INVITES A FRESH START – AND THAT INCLUDES YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE. WARMER WEATHER, INCREASED HUMIDITY AND LONGER SUN EXPOSURE MEAN IT’S TIME TO REASSESS THE PRODUCTS YOU USE AND HOW YOU CARE FOR YOUR SKIN. JUST AS NATURE BLOOMS AND RESETS, SO TOO SHOULD YOUR APPROACH TO SKINCARE.
SWITCH TO A LIGHTER MOISTURISER
The rich creams that protected your skin during winter can feel too heavy as temperatures rise. Opt for a lightweight, hydrating moisturiser – think gel- or water-based formulas that absorb quickly and keep skin feeling fresh without clogging pores. Skin Renewal’s HA with Peptides is an excellent choice.
REINTRODUCE OR INCREASE EXFOLIATION
Winter often results in a buildup of dead skin cells. Spring is the perfect time to gently sweep them away. A mild exfoliant, such as a lactic acid or enzyme-based product, used once or twice a week, can brighten the complexion and smooth skin texture. Avoid over-exfoliating, which can weaken the skin barrier and increase sensitivity. Try Skin Renewal’s Treatment Prep Cream or Lamelle Cathepzyme to revive your skin’s radiance.
STEP UP YOUR SPF
Sun protection is essential all year round, but spring calls for renewed vigilance. With more time spent outdoors, daily broad-spectrum SPF becomes non-negotiable. Choose a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection, and remember to apply it to your neck, chest and hands. Formulas enriched with antioxidants offer extra defence against environmental stressors. Lamelle Helase contains DNA-correcting
ingredients and antioxidants to protect against the full spectrum of UV rays.
ADD ANTIOXIDANTS TO YOUR ROUTINE
Spring brings longer days, warmer weather and increased exposure to UV rays and environmental pollution. Antioxidants such as vitamin C and niacinamide help shield the skin from free radical damage while boosting brightness and evening out tone. Apply them under your moisturiser or SPF for optimal results. For extra nourishment, pair a Glutathione Peel and Glutathione Serum with Skin Renewal’s Anti-Oxidant Serum with Phloretin to care for your skin from the inside out.
HYDRATE FROM WITHIN
Seasonal shifts in temperature and allergens can leave skin feeling unbalanced. Support your skincare routine with internal hydration by increasing your water intake and incorporating foods rich in omega-3s and antioxidants to promote skin health from within. Skin Renewal’s Omega 3 supplement makes an ideal addition to your morning routine.
SPRING-CLEAN YOUR SKINCARE SHELF
Check expiry dates, clear out half-used products and make room for season-appropriate essentials. A streamlined skincare routine not only benefits your skin but also makes your daily ritual more enjoyable. IB

25 YEARS OF African elegance
WHERE HERITAGE MEETS HAUTE COUTURE, SUN GODDESS CELEBRATES SOUTH AFRICAN ROYALTY THROUGH TIMELESS DESIGN, BOLD STORYTELLING, AND MODERN LUXURY.
BY TEMO MPODI
Authenticity and storytelling lie at the heart of Sun Goddess. Founded by the late Vanya Mangaliso, whose legacy lives on through co-founder and loving husband Thando Mangaliso, we spoke to Thando about their unwavering promise to their people and the world: to preserve South African heritage through craftsmanship and quality.
Q COULD YOU GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF SUN GODDESS’S JOURNEY AND DEVELOPMENT OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS?
ASun Goddess has grown from a visionary idea into one of South Africa’s most recognised luxury fashion houses, staying
true to our ethos of celebrating African heritage through contemporary design. Over 25 years, we have evolved with each era, from our early days introducing the world to the concept of “modern African luxury”, to our global runway moments, and now to an archival renaissance where our legacy informs the future.
QHOW HAS YOUR CULTURAL IDENTITY SHAPED YOUR DESIGN AND CREATIVE AESTHETIC?
AOur aesthetic has always been rooted in South Africa’s rich cultural beadwork, ceremonial attire, storytelling fabrics, and the colours of the land. This identity is not just inspiration; it is our blueprint. It shapes how we cut, embellish, and finish every garment, ensuring
that each piece carries a timeless story of heritage and pride.
Q SUN GODDESS’S DESIGN INSPIRATION STEMS FROM THE ICONIC VANYA MANGALISO. HOW WILL HER VISION CONTINUE TO INFLUENCE THE BRAND’S CREATIVE DIRECTION?
AVanya Mangaliso’s vision was timeless; she believed in honouring quintessential South African womanhood and creating pieces that exemplifies dignity, grace, and celebration. That philosophy continues to guide every decision we make. Her archives and teachings form the foundation of our current and future collections, ensuring her creative spirit remains interwoven into the brand’s DNA.
Q COULD YOU SHARE A HERITAGE MEMORY OF VANYA’S THAT TIES INTO THE LEGACY OF THE BRAND?
AClinging to Dr Credo Mutwa’s Indaba My Children book. Back then, there was an aesthetic disconnect, and her time in Europe taught her the importance of belonging and identity. This was the opposite in South Africa, where it wasn’t normal to wear anything to do with your culture. She, alongside her hubby, started saying we are kings and queens, and we descend from a rich royal heritage.
Q WITH SUCH A RICH HERITAGE AND LONGEVITY, HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN RESILIENCE AS A BRAND?
ABy anchoring ourselves in purpose. Fashion trends shift, markets fluctuate, but our reason to achieve and celebrate South
African identity through clothing gives us that resilience. We see ourselves not just as a brand but as cultural custodians. Timekeepers of South African identity.
Q AS THE BRAND ENTERS A NEW CHAPTER, WHAT CAN YOUR AUDIENCE LOOK FORWARD TO?
AAn exciting fusion of archival treasures and modern reinterpretations. Expect more storytelling, innovation, and inclusivity of African Luxury as we build the next 25 years.
Q HOW DO YOU SEE SUN GODDESS CONTINUING TO LEAD AND INSPIRE?
ABy remaining authentic to our roots while pushing South African fashion into new spaces, museums, international runways, metaverse experiences, and global retail platforms. Locally, we aim to mentor and empower the next generation of South African creatives; globally, we aim to cement what South African luxury looks like. IB

YOUR Guide to Movement on the Move
TRAVELLING CAN DISRUPT EVEN THE MOST DISCIPLINED FITNESS ROUTINES. BETWEEN LONG-HAUL FLIGHTS, BUSY SCHEDULES, AND UNFAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS, STAYING ACTIVE CAN SEEM NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.
BY BYRON LUKAS
However, according to sports strength and conditioning expert Kasey Oliver, with a bit of planning and a flexible attitude, you can maintain your strength and mobility, no matter where you land.
HERE’S HOW TO STAY FIT ON THE MOVE, NO FANCY GYM NEEDED.
Hotel Room Hacks
Bodyweight Is Your Friend
No gym? No problem. Your hotel room can become your private studio. Bodyweight
exercises like push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks are highly effective and need no equipment. Try combining them into a circuit to work multiple muscle groups in one session.
Pack Smart: Resistance Bands
Lightweight and remarkably versatile, resistance bands are an essential travel companion. Use them for chest presses, rows, and leg exercises by anchoring them to sturdy objects like door frames or furniture.
Quick & Dirty: HIIT
Pressed for time? High-
Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is your best option. Choose five exercises such as burpees, jump squats, and mountain climbers and perform them in 30-second bursts with 30 seconds of rest. You’ll break a serious sweat in just 15–20 minutes.
Fight Jet Lag with Movement
Jet lag not only drains your energy but also impacts mood, digestion, and motivation. Combat it with clever movement strategies.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Water is your first line of
defence. Stay hydrated by drinking before, during, and after your flight. Herbal teas like chamomile or rooibos also aid with hydration and relaxation.
Stretch It Out
Long flights tighten your hips, shoulders, and spine. Get up and stretch during your flight if possible, and once you land, follow a short mobility routine. Moves like downward dog, catcow, and gentle forward folds help reset your posture and circulation.
Walk It Off
Instead of collapsing into bed, go for a quick walk. Gentle activity and natural light help reset your circadian rhythm and improve your mood after long travel hours.
crunches are simple but effective. Combine several into a 20-minute session to maintain muscle tone.
Circuit Sessions
Alternate between cardio and strength exercises to keep your heart rate elevated. Think jumping jacks, push-ups, lunges, and repeat. Three to four rounds are sufficient to feel a sense of achievement.
Explore Local Resources
Make the most of your destination. Parks, trails, beaches, and even hotel staircases can be turned into fitness zones. Look for public workout stations or find steps and benches to use for strength training.
HERE’S A STRAIGHTFORWARD 30-MINUTE ROUTINE CRAFTED TO RESTORE MOBILITY AND CIRCULATION AFTER FLIGHTS OR LONG DAYS OF ACTIVITY.
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Arm Circles
Torso Twists
Leg Swings
Neck Rolls
Main Set (15–20 minutes)
Cat-Cow Stretch
Downward Dog
Forward Fold
Hip Flexor Lunge (30 sec/ leg)
Seated Hamstring Stretch (30 sec/leg)
Keep Your Mobility in Check
Mobility exercises are just as vital as cardio or strength training, particularly when travelling.
Warm Up with Movement
Begin with dynamic stretches to energise your body. Arm circles, leg swings, and torso twists help boost circulation and joint mobility before your workout.
Roll It Out
If you have the space, pack a travel-sized foam roller or massage ball. Use it after your flight or a long day to release tension and aid recovery.
No Gym, No Excuses
You don’t require machines to remain strong; your body suffices.
Bodyweight Basics
Push-ups, planks, air squats, dips (using a chair), and core exercises like bicycle
Quick Travel Recovery Routine Cool Down Matters
After your workout, relax with static stretches. Concentrate on the hips, shoulders, and lower back—areas that tighten during travel. Hold each stretch for 20–30 seconds. 3 4 5
Bodyweight Squats (2 mins)
Push-Ups (2 mins)
Wall Sit (1 min)
Child’s Pose (2 mins)
Cool Down (5 minutes)
Gentle Seated Twist
Neck Stretch
Deep Breathing
Adjust exercises to match your comfort level. Concentrate on deep, controlled breathing throughout the routine to improve recovery.
Kasey’s thoughts
Maintaining fitness while travelling doesn’t have to be challenging. With bodyweight exercises, some portable tools, and a flexible mindset, you can sustain your fitness levels and stay energised throughout your trip.
“Your body is your most dependable gym; use it wisely, and no destination will derail your wellness objectives.” IB
WHY THE GREEN GODDESS IS A NUTRITION POWERHOUSE
FOR YEARS, I DISMISSED ANYTHING CALLED A GREEN GODDESS SMOOTHIE. GREEN JUICE? IT SIMPLY DIDN’T SOUND APPEALING. I IMAGINED IT TASTING LIKE COLD SPINACH WATER, DEFINITELY NOT MY KIND OF THING. BUT THEN ONE DAY, CURIOSITY GOT THE BETTER OF ME, AND I ORDERED THE GREEN GODDESS SMOOTHIE...
BY MILOU STAUB
Iwas amazed. Creamy, fruity, and refreshing, this smoothie blends pineapple, mango, coconut milk, spinach, and kale into a tropical delight. It was light yet satisfying, sweet but balanced. I never imagined something so green could taste this good.
The very next day, I attended a braai and, believe it or not, there it was again: the Green Goddess, this time in salad form.
The base was crunchy cabbage, but the true star was the dressing, basil, lime, avocado, garlic, olive oil, and fresh herbs. It was zesty, creamy, and truly addictive. Usually, I opt for bread or potato bake at a braai, but this salad had me going back for thirds.
So, what makes the Green Goddess trend more than just hype? It’s packed with nutrients. Leafy greens like spinach and kale are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, along with fibre and antioxidants
that help fight inflammation and support digestion. Adding avocado provides healthy fats that benefit your skin and brain, while a splash of citrus gives an immune-boosting vitamin C hit.
The smoothie version is perfect for a quick breakfast or an afternoon boost. You can even add collagen powder for a skin and joint boost without changing the flavour. Meanwhile, the salad makes for a light yet satisfying lunch, with every crunchy, creamy bite fulfilling your hunger.
In smoothie and salad form, the Green Goddess offers plant-powered goodness that actually tastes fantastic. It’s the perfect mix of health and flavour, something that once seemed impossible.
If you’re sceptical, I understand, I was too. But one sip (or bite) might just convert you into a fan. It did for me. IB
WHY WELLNESS ESCAPES ARE THE NEW MUST -HAVE RESET
FROM YOGA SANCTUARIES TO LUXURY DAY SPAS, MORE PEOPLE ARE PRIORITISING WELLNESS TRAVEL, CREATING NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOULFUL EXPERIENCES AND INNOVATIVE BUSINESSES.
BY MILOU STAUB
Wellness is no longer just a lifestyle; it is a destination. As burnout, digital fatigue, and emotional overload become common parts of modern life, an increasing number of people are turning to healing retreats to regain balance. They are not only going off-grid; they are visiting yoga retreats, boutique wellness lodges, and even urban day spas that offer specialised escape experiences.
Post-pandemic life has transformed how we understand “rest”. Traditional holidays, sunbathing, sightseeing, and cocktails are being replaced by more mindful, restorative travel. Healing retreats provide the chance to disconnect and revive in a way that feels both luxurious and deeply personal.
Today’s wellness enthusiasts aren’t just seeking pampering; they desire purpose. This is where contemporary healing spaces come into play. From weekend mindfulness retreats to breathwork workshops at boutique spa resorts, the retreat industry is changing rapidly. These spaces combine ancient practices like yoga, meditation, and energy work with modern comforts and stylish design. The outcome? Destinations that soothe both the senses and the soul.
Even day spas and wellness centres are evolving. Many now provide half-day or full-day retreat packages, featuring guided movement, sound healing, plant-based menus, and digital detox options. These more accessible, local options attract busy professionals seeking retreat-like benefits without the need for travel.
It’s not just about self-care; it’s about selfrealignment. People are looking for environments that promote reflection, reconnection, and healing. Whether it’sa mountain yoga lodge, a coastal wellness sanctuary, or a tranquil inner-city spa, these venues are becoming foundations for meaningful transformation.
And this rise in demand presents significant opportunities. Wellness retreats are not only popular; they’re establishing new platforms for brands and spaces that promote intentional living. From yoga studios and skincare brands to luxury lodges and holistic therapists, the audience is present and investing in their wellbeing.
The message is clear: in a world that never pauses, people are choosing to. Healing retreats aren’t merely escapes; they are becoming essential. Whether it’s a three-day immersion or a 90-minute sound bath at your favourite spa, the space to breathe, reset, and reconnect is no longer a luxury; it’s the new standard. IB

THE HISTORY OF ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe’s history dates back thousands of years, with evidence of early farming communities from around 500 AD. The country is renowned for the Great Zimbabwe ruins; a stone city constructed between the 11th and 15th centuries.
This settlement was the centre of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which prospered through gold trade with the Swahili coast and beyond.
In the late 19th century, British colonisers under Cecil John Rhodes claimed the land, naming it Southern Rhodesia. White minority rule shaped politics and land ownership for many years. After a prolonged liberation struggle, Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, with Robert Mugabe becoming its first Prime Minister.
The country made early advances in education and health but later encountered economic decline, political unrest, and international isolation, particularly from the 2000s onwards. Despite these difficulties, Zimbabwe continues to be a nation with a rich cultural heritage and a history rooted in resilience and identity.

IN THE CENTRE OF WATERKLOOF, PRETORIA, STANDS A 1970S ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARK THAT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY RESTORED, REVITALISED, AND REIMAGINED FOR MODERN LUXURY LIVING.
BY MELLET & HUMAN ARCHITECTS / WWW.MELLETHUMAN.CO.ZA
Originally designed by Dutch architect John van de Werke and master-built with no expense spared, this home has long been admired for its distinctive slate roof, curved gabled windows, and bespoke craftsmanship.
Yet, after decades under the care of its original owners, the residence needed a carefully
considered modern update. One that preserved its heritage while catering to the needs of today’s discerning family.
Mellet & Human Architects, collaborating with Leon Swanepoel of Swapri Projects, accepted the challenge, delivering a refined redesign that connects history and modernity.
Here, we examine the architectural decisions, material choices, and spatial innovations that revived this Grande Dame, along with an exclusive interview with the architects on balancing heritage with modernity.
THE VISION: RESPECTING HISTORY WHILE EMBRACING “EASY LIVING”
The project started with a clear directive: restore the home’s grandeur while ensuring it aligned with today’s “easy living” philosophy. A trend highlighted in BDA London’s Macro Report, which emphasises effortless functionality within elegant spaces.
KEY ARCHITECTURAL INTERVENTIONS:
NOTABLE MATERIAL PAIRINGS:
• Reclaimed wrought iron used in boundary walls and sliding gates.
• Preservation of original features: The curved wooden staircase, kiaat wood panelling, and wrought-iron pergolas were carefully restored.
• Contrasting modern additions: Instead of imitating the past, new features like glassbox bedroom extensions and a bright, airy kitchen tower were introduced as deliberate contrasts.
• Reconfigured outdoor spaces: The steeply sloped garden was terraced with retaining walls, creating functional zones - a pool pavilion, herb garden, and outdoor seating areas.
“The house had an incredible soul, but it needed to breathe anew,” explains the architect, Andre Mellet. “We didn’t want a pastiche of the 70s; we wanted a dialogue between eras.”
MATERIALITY & TACTILE LUXURY: QUIET OPULENCE IN DETAIL
• Original face-brick walls were plastered and painted to brighten the interior, while external brickwork was restored according to the original drawings.
• Travertine and steel in the kitchen extension, harmonising warmth with modern design.
“The 70s loved raw, tactile materials,” notes Andre. “We honoured that by restoring the kiaat wood joinery but introduced sleek, minimalist interventions where it mattered.”
SPATIAL RECONFIGURATION: SOFT ZONING & FLUID LIVING
While the 1970s favoured compartmentalised spaces, today’s luxury homes demand openness with “soft zoning” - areas that feel connected yet distinct.
The BDA report’s emphasis on “quiet luxury”: rich, understated textures like stone, wood, and brushed metals - guides material selections.
KEY LAYOUT CHANGES:
• Ground floor: The library, lounge, and dining room were refurbished but remained as
distinct spaces, retaining their original fireplaces for character.
• Kitchen expansion: A southern extension with sliding glass doors created a seamless indoor-outdoor breakfast patio.
• Upstairs: The three dark bedrooms were converted into five en-suite rooms, with glass-box extensions flooding the interiors with light.
“We kept the drama of the double-volume staircase but introduced skylights to enhance natural illumination,” says Andre.
LIGHTING & BIOPHILIC
DESIGN
The house’s original small windows and dark interiors presented a challenge. The solution? Strategic lighting layers and biophilic principles.
LIGHTING INNOVATIONS:
• Electrically operated skylights illuminate the central TV lounge and staircase.
• Vertical glazing in the kitchen tower maximises northern light.
rhythm, mimicking the sun’s movement,” Andre explains.
SUSTAINABILITY & TIMELESSNESS
To ensure the home ages gracefully, sustainable and durable choices were prioritised.
• Borehole and automated irrigation for waterwise landscaping.
• Reclaimed materials (wrought iron, timber) help reduce waste.
• Energy-efficient glazing for new extensions.
“True sustainability is designing for longevity,” Andre reflects. “This isn’t a trendy makeover - it’s a home meant to last another 50 years.”
FINAL THOUGHTS: THE FUTURE OF HERITAGE RENOVATIONS
As interest in heritage properties increases, Andre offers this advice:
“Respect the original intent, but don’t be afraid to contrast.”
“The 70s aesthetic is returning, but reinterpreted - less psychedelic, more refined.”
This home stands as a testament to careful revival, where history is not erased but reimagined for a new era. IB

CAPE TOWN’S ICONIC VIEWS JUST GOT A SERIOUS UPGRADE. FROM ARTDECO ELEGANCE TO HEART-RACING THRILLS, HOTEL SKY CAPE TOWN OFFERS GLAMOUR, ADRENALINE, AND UNFORGETTABLE SCENERY ALL WRAPPED IN WARM HOSPITALITY. READY TO TAKE THE PLUNGE?
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
The Mother City is known for its breathtaking scenery, but the Inbound SA team’s recent visit to Hotel Sky Cape Town revealed that some views are truly next-level – quite literally.
From the moment I stepped into the sleek, art-deco-inspired lobby, I was welcomed with warm smiles, smooth service, and a sense of understated luxury that felt both glamorous and inviting. The interiors shone with modern elegance, yet the atmosphere stayed comfortably relaxed, a combination that makes you want to stay a bit longer.
Our visit had one clear purpose: to conquer the Sky-Hi Ride. The staff, fully aware of our mission, kept the mood light with a few playful jokes about the thrill (and perhaps slight terror) we were about to endure.
On the 28th floor, the ride was ready. Secured and strapped in, I took a deep breath as the platform started to ascend into the open air. To one side, the Atlantic Ocean shimmered; to the other, Table Mountain rose proudly against the horizon. The rush was immediate. For a few heart-stopping
seconds, I hung suspended between earth and sky, Cape Town sprawling endlessly below.
And then, drop. Thirty metres in, it felt as if my soul was leaving my body. The adrenaline was electric, the thrill unforgettable, and the sense of achievement unmatched. Meanwhile, my colleague Kim Kay opted out at the last second, wisely joining our other two teammates in the spectators’ section.
With the ride conquered, it was time to relax. We headed to the Infinity Restaurant, where host Bronwyn greeted us with effortless charm and our waiter, Randall, provided impeccable service. The view from our table was as tempting as the menu itself. I opted for the sticky ribs and chips –juicy, tender, and perfectly indulgent.
From start to finish, our experience at Hotel Sky combined five-star comfort, thrilling adventure, and flawless hospitality. Whether you’re chasing the perfect Instagram shot, seeking a fresh perspective of the Mother City, or craving a dose of adrenaline paired with laid-back dining, Hotel Sky delivers it all. I’ll certainly come back. In fact, I might even be brave enough for a second drop. IB
The Luxury Nomad’s Guide
THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN BUSINESS AND LEISURE TRAVEL HAVE ENTIRELY BLURRED, GIVING RISE TO A NEW KIND OF SAVVY TRAVELLER: THE LUXURY DIGITAL NOMAD. THIS MODERN APPROACH TO WORKING REQUIRES BETTER INTERNET, PREMIUM SERVICES, AND FACILITIES THAT STANDARD HOTELS CANNOT PROVIDE.
BY MILOU STAUB
CONNECTIVITY IS EVERYTHING
Premium remote workers require more than basic hotel Wi-Fi. Leading business hotels such as Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental now provide dedicated fibre connections with in-room Ethernet ports and mesh networks for crystal-clear video calls. Always verify specifications; many guarantee 25Mbps upload speeds for corporate guests.
Co-working has also become a luxury. WeWork’s premium locations in London, New York, and Hong Kong rent private offices by the day with IT support. For longer stays, high-end co-working spaces like Workshop17 and The Business Exchange cater to both national and international remote workers.
SMART ACCOMMODATION CHOICES
LEGAL AND FINANCIAL PLANNING
Working while travelling requires careful tax planning. Seek advice from international tax specialists regarding residency rules, especially the 183-day rule that affects UK and US tax liabilities.
Digital banking services like Wise and Revolut offer multi-currency accounts with minimal foreign transaction fees. The luxurious digital nomad lifestyle embodies freedom through meticulous planning; blending wanderlust with strategic thinking to promote sustainable, sophisticated mobility.
PLANNING YOUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Long-term travel requires careful consideration of health infrastructure. International health insurance from providers like Cigna Global provides worldwide coverage without restrictions on location. Telemedicine platforms such as Doctors on Demand South Africa allow consultations with registered GPs via WhatsApp, ensuring consistent care while travelling.
Premium gyms with worldwide access; Virgin Active maintains high standards across South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana, as well as internationally. Many luxury hotels now collaborate with local fitness clubs to offer extended access beyond their own facilities.
Extended luxury stays demand a different approach than regular business travel. Marriott Bonvoy’s Homes & Villas programme offers luxury residences with hotel-level service for monthly bookings in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. Airbnb Luxe provides vetted properties with dedicated trip planners, ensuring business-grade amenities in home settings.
For international destinations, corporate housing specialists like National Corporate Housing offer fully serviced apartments with housekeeping, concierge services, and business centres. These often cost less than hotels for stays over 30 days while providing authentic local experiences.
Q&A WITH CHEF MORNÉ:
A Culinary Journey Rooted in Story, Simplicity, and Soul
WITH OVER 30 YEARS OF CULINARY EXPERTISE ACROSS AFRICA, EUROPE, AND THE WORLD’S MOST LUXURIOUS CRUISE SHIPS AND PRIVATE YACHTS, CHEF MORNÉ CARELSE IS AN EXPERIENCED CHEF WITH A CRAVING FOR EXCELLENCE AND A PASSION FOR COMMUNITY. HIS IMPRESSIVE JOURNEY THROUGH SOME OF THE GLOBE’S MOST EXCLUSIVE KITCHENS HAS NOW BROUGHT HIM HOME, WHERE HE’S SERVING MORE THAN JUST FINE FOOD.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
Today, Chef Morné takes on multiple roles: culinary innovator, mentor, entrepreneur, and advocate for local tourism. As co-founder of Farm Boy Cuisine, Morné leads a catering brand that has swiftly gained popularity for weddings, corporate events, film productions, and private cooking.
What started as a catering venture has expanded. Just 11 months ago, Farm Boy Cuisine opened a bricks-and-mortar restaurant in Paarl, offering a down-to-earth yet sophisticated culinary experience that combines bold flavours with a sense of place.
WHAT IMPORTANT LESSONS HAVE INFLUENCED YOUR CULINARY PHILOSOPHY?
Decades across continents have taught me to respect ingredients and honour the cultural
stories they tell. Whether working with West African root vegetables or Mediterranean seafood, simplicity often uncovers true flavour. Life at sea and in remote kitchens balanced my formal training with adaptability.
Over time, I’ve come to value restraint, consistency, personal connection, and, most importantly, mentorship. Today, I focus on shaping the next generation of chefs with wisdom earned from every kitchen I’ve served in.
HOW DID FARM BOY CUISINE ORIGINATE, AND WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE?
Farm Boy was born from a love of rustic, farmfresh ingredients, elevated with a modern twist. We don’t just cater — we curate. Each event captures its unique spirit with customised menus, live cooking stations, curated wine pairings, and immersive storytelling.
Working with local farmers and artists has opened doors I never anticipated.
The Klein Drakenstein venue enhances the experience with its rustic charm. It’s all about emotional resonance, from first bite to final farewell.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT MANAGING YOUR PAARL RESTAURANT FOR NEARLY A YEAR?
The community. In Paarl, word-of-mouth wields significant influence. Seasonal patterns and local tastes have reshaped my menu. Our staff has become a family, and the venue a backdrop for life’s milestones. Working with local farmers and artists has opened doors I never anticipated. If I had to sum up these 11 months, it might read: “Rooted in flavour, shared in joy.”
WHAT DOES MENTORSHIP MEAN TO YOU, AND COULD YOU SHARE A SUCCESS STORY?
Mentorship is about planting seeds of belief and nurturing growth. It’s more than just teaching techniques — it’s guiding chefs through selfdoubt and unlocking confidence. A notable story: a quiet dishwasher who showed keen curiosity. I mentored him through prep, sauces, and plating. Today, he’s a sous chef mentoring others — proof that mentorship multiplies impact.
HOW
DO YOU DELIVER WORLD-CLASS EXCELLENCE TO LOCAL DINING?
Excellence is about intention, not price tag. Whether I’m plating for a yacht or a community festival, I uphold the same respect for ingredients, precise technique, and storytelling. Local herbs,
seasonal produce, and heartfelt hospitality create dishes that feel both personal and refined, consistently.
AS DIRECTOR OF ENJOY DRAKENSTEIN,
HOW DOES FOOD AND TOURISM
DRIVE GROWTH?
Drakenstein’s culinary scene, from wine farms to township eateries, is a major attraction for tourists. Our cuisine shares stories of heritage, resilience, and innovation. Farm-to-table experiences, agri-tourism, and culinary events are expanding the region’s appeal. Through training, funding, and the new Tourism Plan, we are building an inclusive food economy that supports local entrepreneurs.
WHICH INGREDIENTS OR DISHES REPRESENT THE SOUL OF DRAKENSTEIN?
This region is a tapestry of taste:
• Waterblommetjies in traditional bredie reflect indigenous heritage.
• Fynbos herbs add earthy depth.
• Olives and local wines tell a Mediterraneaninspired story.
• Stone-ground maize and Cape Malay curries speak of roots and resilience. And of course, the braai is more than a meal, it’s a celebration of togetherness.
HOW DO YOU JUGGLE BEING A CHEF, TV PERSONALITY, AND COMMUNITY LEADER WHILE STAYING CREATIVE?
It’s all about integration. I set aside daily “quiet kitchen time” for experimentation. Public appearances and community involvement spark new ideas. Whether I’m hosting a cooking class or strolling through a farmers’ market, everything connects back to the plate. Creativity is contagious, and collaboration drives it.
WHAT
ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR FARM BOY CUISINE AND YOUR PERSONAL JOURNEY?
Expect more immersive dining experiences, seasonal events, and an expanding wine selection. We’re adapting our venue to host weddings, film shoots, and celebrations. I’m committed to rooted excellence, world-class food that celebrates local ingredients. Through media, mentorship, and collaboration, I aim to develop the Drakenstein region into a premier culinary destination. If I were to write a memoir, it might be called “The Valley on My Plate.” IB

FINISH HIM! How Fibre is Powering the Business Traveller’s Gaming Upgrade
WHY SETTLE FOR HOTEL BUFFETS AND SMALL TALK WHEN YOU COULD BE CONQUERING DUNGEONS OR SCORING MATCH-WINNERS BETWEEN MEETINGS? FIBRE-FUELLED CLOUD GAMING IS CHANGING THE WAY BUSINESS TRAVELLERS UNWIND. HERE’S HOW TO LEVEL UP YOUR PLAY ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
BY BYRON LUKAS
You’ve nailed your pitch, shaken just the right number of hands at the networking drinks (firm but not bonecrushing), and politely navigated a hotel buffet that tasted like boiled ambition. Now what?
You ditch the brogues, loosen the tie, and dive into FIFA 25, Cyberpunk 2077, or Elden Ring – all from your hotel bed, airport lounge, or even the boardroom during a “strategic break”.
Welcome to the golden age of fibre-powered gaming for the business class elite. It’s no longer just about suits and spreadsheets; it’s about fitting in a boss fight between meetings.
Thanks to high-speed fibre now appearing in luxury hotels, airport lounges, and upscale coffee shops, you no longer need to carry your PS5 through customs. Services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, and PlayStation Remote Play allow you to stream directly to your phone, tablet, or laptop – no cables, no hassle, just pure gaming.
THE FIBRE FACTOR
Cloud gaming depends on your connection. An unreliable signal turns epic battles into
pixelated chaos. Fibre resolves this, providing low-latency, high-quality gameplay that keeps you competitive whether you’re in Cape Town or Copenhagen.
TRAVEL-READY GEAR
Snap-on controllers like the Backbone One, Razer Kishi, or GameSir X2 instantly turn your phone into a pocket-sized console – ideal for layovers or Uber queues. For extra power, portable gaming PCs like the ASUS ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go pack full AAA performance into a travel-friendly design.
FOR THE HIGH ROLLERS
Want the ultimate flex? A mini projector like the Nebula Capsule or XGIMI MoGo Pro transforms your hotel wall into a cinema-sized screen. Pair it with a robe and room service fries, and you’ve redefined luxury leisure.
So, whether you’re pitching in Sandton or conferencing in Cape Town, bring your controller. With fibre at your fingertips, the game never truly pauses.
Because real gamers don’t clock out – not even in business class. IB

BOOK REVIEWS DEEP BLUE
by Veruska De Vita (Jonathan Ball)
I’ve never quite understood people’s fascination with the ocean – its vastness, the unknowns beneath the surface, and the hidden dangers at every turn – I maintain a healthy fear of it. But Veruska De Vita has opened my eyes to the beauty of this mysterious ‘beast’. A whimsical tribute to all things aquatic, it delves into the salty pleasures of swimming, dipping, and daredevil free diving. Veruska, a free diver and open-water swimmer, talks to cold-water swimmers, ocean scientists, and elite athletes who see waves as their personal playground. The sea becomes a source of healing, community, and primal connection. Even if you’re more of a sofa surfer than a sea worshipper, this poetic plunge might nudge you towards the shoreline – if only for a paddle.
WIN A BOOK BUNDLE WORTH R630!
Jonathan Ball is giving away two book hampers featuring this year’s most compelling SA reads, Deep Blue and After the Fire! To enter, scan the QR code with your phone and fill in the entry online at inboundsa.com/competitions. Entries close on 30 September 2025. T&Cs apply.
OUR OTHER FAVOURITES
AFTER THE FIRES
by Nozipho Tshabalala (Jonathan Ball)
Nozipho Mbanjwa-Tshabalala was always the golden girl: successful, composed, and in control. But After the Fires reveals what happens when life smashes through the armour. The memoir starts with her mother’s death at the height of her career, leading to a profound personal reflection. Raised during a politically tense time in Pietermaritzburg, Nozipho understood she had to grasp every chance she was offered. But in her forties, she realises that survival mode isn’t enough to truly flourish. Raw, inspiring, and profoundly human, her story addresses infertility, family, identity, and the radical act of letting go.
LOVE, ZOLA
by Zibu Sithole (Pan Macmillan)
It’s the third chapter in Zola and Mbali’s love story, and I’m fully invested. They’ve weathered career pressures, longdistance woes, and now face more turbulence as Okuhle, Zola’s former boss and Mbali’s ex, returns to Jozi with unresolved issues. It doesn’t help that Zola’s rising success is a bittersweet reminder of everything Okuhle’s lost. Meanwhile, Zola’s cousin Zozo’s Durban fairy-tale encounters a hiccup as old emotions resurface. Love, Zola boils with tension, passion, and some poignant truth bombs. It’s a story of self-discovery, second chances, and the chaotic puzzle of modern relationships. The real question is: can love genuinely flourish when the past keeps crashing the party?
