August is no ordinary month in South Africa; it is a time when we pause to honour the strength, resilience, and brilliance of women who continue to shape our nation and our future.
At Inbound SA Magazine, this Women’s Month issue is a heartfelt tribute to those who lead with passion, rise with purpose, and inspire us all to do more and be more.
In this power-packed edition, we shine a spotlight on ultra-marathon queen Gerda Steyn, who opens up about discipline, mental grit, and what it means to break boundaries as a woman in sport.
We also catch up with the multifaceted Marichan Luiters, whose journey reflects the determination and creativity that so many South African women embody.
In a moving feature, we asked local celebrity women to reflect on the women who inspire them most, a celebration of mentorship, sisterhood, and shared legacy. Whether it’s a mother, a mentor, or a public figure, their tributes remind us that women truly lift each other higher.
For those embracing a healthier lifestyle, fitness coach Zamo van der Westhuizen shares practical tips to empower your wellness journey, because strong minds and strong bodies go hand in hand.
This month’s theme echoes loud and clear: “Empowered women, empower women.” Let’s continue to celebrate, support, and elevate the voices that move us forward.
Here’s to women, in all their strength, softness, brilliance, and boldness.

FROM CASUAL JOGS IN DUBAI TO RECORDBREAKING VICTORIES AT THE COMRADES AND TWO OCEANS, GERDA STEYN’S RISE REFLECTS A BLEND OF PASSION, DISCIPLINE, AND JOY THAT CONTINUES TO INSPIRE ATHLETES ACROSS THE GLOBE.
BY BYRON LUKAS
When Gerda Steyn first put on her running shoes, it wasn’t to pursue a record-breaking career but simply to stay active and make friends in her new home in Dubai. Little did she know that those early runs through sunny desert streets would spark a passion that would transform her life and place her among South Africa’s top athletes.
“I started running to make friends and be a bit more active,” Gerda recalls. “My first marathon was the Dubai Marathon, just three months after I started running, and I finished in 3 hours and 11 minutes. Even then, I knew I had found something I loved.”
Today, Gerda is a household name in South African athletics. With record-breaking victories at the Comrades and Two Oceans Marathons, she is not just running; she’s redefining the limits of endurance.
“That to me goes far beyond medals and podiums,” she says. “It has brought so much joy to my life and my family, and it’s special to witness.”
Gerda’s rise was neither expected nor conventional. Her story is defined by discipline, sacrifice, and an unwavering love for the sport.
“The race often feels easier compared to the hard work done in the background before race day,” she explains. “Balancing training and life is not
easy, but it’s always worth it and an interesting journey of self-discovery.”
She often trains alone, using long solo runs as meditation.
“It’s refreshing to escape the noise and just have your own footsteps for company. Being comfortable with your thoughts is an important part of endurance running.”
Despite training mostly on her own, Gerda draws inspiration from other women in sport.
“Caroline Wostmann and Frith van der Merwe have made a big impact on me. They are strong athletes who carry themselves with kindness, and that inspires me.”
She is also passionate about sports’ power to unite South Africa.
“We are a sport-loving nation, and the support from all corners of the country is heartfelt. Sport
shows us how we can work together as a nation, without discrimination.”
While her race records will stand for years, Gerda’s vision of legacy goes deeper than trophies.
“I want to be remembered as someone who stayed true to herself, made time for others, and found joy even in the most difficult situations,” she says.
Behind the medals is a light-hearted, relatable champion:
• Pump-up song: “Life Without Fantasies” by Neon Dreams.
• Pre-run ritual: “I can’t run without a cup of coffee first,” she laughs.
• Post-race tradition: Celebrating with friends at an afterparty before taking time off to recover.
• During an ultra: She fuels up with energy drinks and gels, having moved away from solid foods for efficiency.
• If not a runner: “I’d be a cyclist, no doubt!”
• Toughest race: The Paris Olympics, which she describes as the toughest of her career.
“I hope my career has an impact on the next generation of athletes, showing them that running can bring joy whether they pursue it professionally or simply for health and social reasons.”
Gerda’s path is not only about winning races but about embracing discipline, community, and joy in every stride. Whether you’re an aspiring athlete or looking for inspiration to lace up your shoes, her experience shows that passion can transform your life in extraordinary ways. IB
Why
SOUTH AFRICANS ARE RENOWNED FOR THEIR RESILIENCE, OVERCOMING HARDSHIPS AND SHINING THROUGH TRIUMPHS. RECENTLY, THE NATION CELEBRATED A SERIES OF SPORTING VICTORIES, PROUDLY SUPPORTING OUR NATIONAL HEROES WITH PASSION AND HOPE. BUT IT’S NOT SOLELY ABOUT VICTORIES. FROM THE EXCITEMENT OF GOLD MEDALS TO ACTS OF SOLIDARITY, OUR TEAM REFLECTS ON WHAT MAKES THEM PROUD TO CALL MZANSI HOME. HONESTLY, WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?
“I’m staying in South Africa because it’s home, a place where the spirit of ubuntu connects us through community and warmth. There’s nothing like the roar of fans during a Springbok game or a fierce local derby; it brings us together. Our culture is rich, diverse, and alive in every beat of the drum and every story shared.
Weekends mean braais with friends and laughter. Yes, we have challenges, but this country’s soul is powerful. I believe in its passion, its beauty, and the promise of a better tomorrow.
Also... the beer’s pretty good.”
- Byron Lukas
“When a foreigner once asked me what it’s like to be South African, all I could say was, ‘You won’t understand.’ Only we knew what Dricus meant when he said, ‘Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie.’
It’s not just a phrase, it’s a feeling, an energy, a spirit. Something unspoken that lives in us. It can’t be explained.
You won’t understand. Lol.”
- Kim Kay
“Cape Town is the place to be, the coolest city in the world! It brings together every vibe, every culture, every cuisine, and every kind of city energy you can imagine. It’s an all-inone experience, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
- Temo Mpodi
“South Africa is honestly such a vibe. Why would you want to live anywhere else? The people are warm, friendly, and always ready for a laugh. The world could be burning, and we’d still throw a stukkie meat on the braai, pour a drink, and make a moment of it.
It’s also one of the few places where you can start your morning hiking a mountain, take a dip in the ocean, enjoy wine tasting in
the afternoon, and still be back in time for a nightcap. That’s Mzansi magic.”
- Charis Torrance
“South Africa is called the ‘Rainbow Nation’ for a reason; our rich blend of languages, traditions, and heritage makes us truly unique. From Zulu dances to Afrikaans storytelling, Xhosa initiation ceremonies to Cape Malay cuisine, we are a living celebration of unity in diversity. And our landscapes? They’re unmatched. We live where the world comes to experience nature at its best.”
- Venecia Valentine
“Whether it’s the Springboks lifting the Rugby World Cup, Bafana Bafana making history, or athletes like Caster Semenya and Wayde van Niekerk shining on the global stage – South Africans have an unmatched sporting spirit. It’s in our blood to back our teams with pride and passion.”
- Tarryn-Leigh Solomons
“There are so many reasons to stay in South Africa, too many to name. We are sons and daughters of the soil. The food we eat, the fruits we enjoy, they’ve become part of us, woven into our very cells. Who knows how much of who we are is shaped by this land?
People are flocking to South Africa and loving it, so why would we leave when there’s so much potential here? Surely, it’s better to stay and contribute, rather than walk away?
An Uber driver once told me, ‘A government needs people to govern.’ That stayed with me. We shouldn’t take ourselves and our responsibilities as citizens out of the equation.”
- Samiena Amien
THIS WOMEN’S MONTH, WE ASKED SOUTH AFRICAN CELEBS TO HONOUR THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE THEM MOST. FROM MOTHERS AND MENTORS TO SISTERS IN SPIRIT, THESE HEARTFELT TRIBUTES CELEBRATE THE POWER, RESILIENCE, AND QUIET STRENGTH OF WOMEN UPLIFTING WOMEN.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
AYANDA BOROTHO PAYS TRIBUTE TO NOMZAMO MBATHA
“What an incredibly difficult choice, and it’s a remarkable sentiment to hold in a context where the narrative about women is ‘pull her down.’ But I must be honest; the pulldowns in my life far outweigh my push-ups, the stand on my shoulders, and every ladder placed in my path by other women. I’ve watched Nomzamo learn from me, and in turn, I learn from her. Seeing her blossom into everything God intended for her has been a marvel to witness unfold before me.”
SIMONE BISCOMBE HONOURS HER AUNT CHERYL KING
“I have many inspirational women in my life, but in this edition, I want to honour my aunt Cheryl, a retired biology teacher, a mom of four, a grandma of nine. She does a lot in her community, she always considers others, and goes out of her way to make everyone’s lives easier.”
JAWAAHIER PETERSEN HONOURS ALL WOMEN
“The woman I want to honour lives in every woman. It’s the resilience, the ability of moms getting 2-3 hours of disturbed sleep at night, breastfeeding their babies, and getting up for a full day of work and being incredible at their jobs. It’s the CEO who has to break glass ceilings to get where she is, the adolescent girl who grabs every opportunity to break generational curses. Wathint’ Abafazi!”
“Choosing only one special woman in my life is so difficult because I find strength in every woman I meet. Each of us has a story that can teach, heal, and inspire. We lift each other in ways we don’t always realise, and I’m grateful for the lessons and moments we share. But if I had to choose just one, it would be my mum. She is the truest example of selflessness and quiet strength I know. Her faith has carried our family through so much, and she has always been my loudest supporter, the one who speaks life into every dream I dare to dream.
“If I could honour one special woman for this edition, it would be my mother. At 74, she continues to run her business, Rocmed, with unwavering dedication and strength. She’s the definition of resilience, leading with grace, purpose, and a quiet power that has always inspired me. My mom is my hero, and everything I know about courage and consistency I learned from watching her.”
“The woman I would like to honour is the queen of visual storytelling, the great Shonda Rhimes. She connects the world through her binge-worthy storytelling. She creates dramas and stories messier than your family WhatsApp group. An awesome advocate for women’s voices and diversity in the entertainment world. On and off screen, she is a powerhouse that lights up minds and screens.”
“She fought for our freedom, she was vocal about the political state of our country during apartheid, she was fearless, and she wanted it to be known. I admire the fact that she was a mother. I am sure she was not perfect, but she raised powerful, independent daughters. She was a wife to a man in prison; on the outside, she was his strength and his voice. She hoped that one day he would be released and they would be together again in a free and independent South Africa.”
Rachel Kolisi recently shared an emotional TikTok showing her children travelling alone to visit their father, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi. Following the couple’s separation in 2024 after eight years of marriage, the video highlights the emotional complexities and adjustments involved in coparenting and family life after divorce.
outh African star Tyla is gearing up to release her new mixtape, “We Wanna Party”, inviting fans to celebrate her bold new musical direction. This highly anticipated project marks a milestone in her artistic evolution, blending infectious beats with her signature flair. Get ready, Tyla’s next era starts now.
South African entertainer Moses “Lady Mo” Sibiya tragically passed away at 33 following a head-on collision near Mbombela on 4 July 2025. Known for his soulful funeral performances, vibrant skits, and flamboyant style, Lady Mo’s death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment community. Five others were seriously injured.
In July 2025, Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion and NBA star Klay Thompson of the Dallas Mavericks made their relationship official. Fans first noticed Klay in the background of Megan’s Instagram post on 9 July, calling it a subtle “soft launch.” Just days later, on 12 July, Klay confirmed the romance by sharing scenic photos of the couple with the caption “Sweet Bells son.” The reveal quickly went viral, with fans celebrating the unexpected pairing of music and basketball royalty.
Fashion fans, rejoice! Disney has confirmed a long-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, nearly two decades after the original. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci will reprise their iconic roles. And though Adrian Grenier’s Nate is out, and a new love interest is in for Hathaway’s Andy Sachs, Colin from Accounts co-creator and star Patrick Brammall steps into the role. Other cast members joining the sequel include Rachel Bloom, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Simone Ashley, and Pauline Chalamet.
Longtime Dawson’s Creek fans are in for a nostalgic thrill as Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes reunite on-screen, and possibly off. The iconic duo, known for their roles as Pacey and Joey, are starring together in Happy Hours, a new romantic dramedy trilogy directed by Holmes. Set to explore themes of mature love, career challenges, and the rekindling of past feelings, this marks their first project together since 2003. Filming began in New York on 21 July, with behindthe-scenes photos already sparking excitement.

WHICH SOUTH AFRICAN SAYING OR SLANG WORD DO YOU USE WAY TOO OFTEN? Yoh!!!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS TRYING TO FIND THEIR VOICE?
The best advice I can give is that if you listen to everyone, you will only get confused. Trust your intuition. Do the inner work needed to be the best version of yourself. Make mistakes, because that’s how you learn and grow. Don’t let anyone shame you for your mistakes; it’s all part of the process.
WHAT’S ONE THING ABOUT YOUR CULTURE YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD OR APPRECIATED?
White people do get cold too. (This became a viral video where my friend and I were expressing how cold it is in South Africa during winter, and the comments were full of people saying, “If white people are getting cold, then it’s cold!”)
WHAT’S THE MOST UNHINGED THING YOU’VE DONE FOR CONTENT?
I often perform comedy skits in public places, and people give me the strangest looks, especially when I dress up for it! For a Checkers campaign, I dressed as a character from the 1800s and walked through the store doing a skit. You eventually get used to it.

WHICH SOUTH AFRICAN SAYING OR SLANG WORD DO YOU USE WAY TOO OFTEN? Believe it or not, “Ahoy mybru” lol.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS TRYING TO FIND THEIR VOICE?
Believe in yourself! Be authentic, and don’t try to be someone you’re not. Don’t be afraid to take risks; mistakes are part of the process. Surround yourself with positivity and find people who support and uplift you. Remember, perfection is an illusion, and illusions aren’t real.
WHAT’S ONE THING ABOUT YOUR CULTURE YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD OR APPRECIATED?
The richness and resilience of our identity. Coloured communities are often boxed into narrow stereotypes. Being coloured is more than just language or humour; it’s a culture, a heritage, and a way of life. It’s the food, the stories, the slang, and the music. Our complexity is beautiful.
WHAT’S THE MOST UNHINGED THING YOU’VE DONE FOR CONTENT?
Honestly, just putting myself out there on a public platform amazes me.
Sixteen-year-old me would be so proud! I’ve always been shy and introverted, but once I’m in front of a camera, it feels like the best way to express myself.

WHICH SOUTH AFRICAN SAYING OR SLANG WORD DO YOU USE WAY TOO OFTEN?
“Now... now.” And yes, I mean it in that uniquely South African time-warp way – it could mean anything from five minutes to two hours. Who knows? Lol!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS TRYING TO FIND THEIR VOICE?
My advice is simple: Don’t wait for permission to take up space. Your voice is valid, even when it shakes. Speak up, stay curious, and remember that softness is strength too. Live in your truth every day and be consistent, because consistency will give you everything you desire.
WHAT’S ONE THING ABOUT YOUR CULTURE YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD OR APPRECIATED?
I wish more people understood and appreciated the beauty in our different languages and dialects, the profound symbolism in our clothing and style, and the rich history behind our food, customs, music, traditions, and people. There is so much depth in every detail.
WHAT’S THE MOST UNHINGED THING YOU’VE DONE FOR CONTENT?
My bestie and I went out for dinner one evening and asked the waiter to take a few pictures of us. Twentyfive minutes later, he was still clicking away, and we milked the moment for all it was worth. Needless to say, the manager eventually came over and was not impressed. After some stern words, I offered to create content and tag the establishment. This immediately redeemed us, and all ended well.

Definitely “yoh”! It’s such a uniquely expressive word – one that simply can’t be translated. Only South Africans truly feel what “yoh” means. Sometimes, all you can say is “yoh”… and keep pushing!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS TRYING TO FIND THEIR VOICE?
As cliché as it may sound, be yourself. And if you’re still figuring out who that is, that’s okay – the exciting part is that you get to decide. Explore your interests, experiment with fashion, meet diverse people, and discover what truly brings you happiness.
WHAT’S ONE THING ABOUT YOUR CULTURE YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD OR APPRECIATED?
I call myself a “Port-African”, born in Portugal and raised in South Africa, and I carry both cultures proudly. Portugal has such a rich history, beautiful traditions, and incredible food that I wish more people would experience. South Africa, though, has the strongest asset of all: the heart of its people.
WHAT’S THE MOST UNHINGED THING YOU’VE DONE FOR CONTENT?
Oh wow – I once sent my mum to an influencer event because I accidentally double-booked myself! It was a full-on festival. She took the content on my behalf, and honestly? She nailed it. No one even noticed! Love you, Mum!

STAND-UP STAR AND RADIO HOST ANGEL CAMPEY CHATS WOMEN’S MONTH POWER, RADIOACTIVE DINNER GUESTS, AI IN COMEDY, AND WHY STAYING SOFT IS HER BIGGEST FLEX. FROM RADIO WAVES TO RARE BLOOMS, ANGEL’S WIT REMINDS US THAT LAUGHTER IS SERIOUS BUSINESS.
YOU’RE HOSTING AN ALLWOMEN DINNER PARTY. YOUR GUESTS ARE FIVE HISTORICAL FEMALE FIGURES, WHO MAKES THE LIST?
I want to say Marie Curie, but she’s radioactive, so she can Zoom in. Marie Antoinette, too, so we have an excuse to serve cake. It’s tough to think of five historical women who aren’t a bit scary, like Joan of Arc, but let’s invite her! I’m sure Nandi Zulu (Shaka’s mother) would have fascinating insights, and to round it out, I’d love to pick Jane Fonda’s brain…
WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST COMPLIMENT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED AFTER A SET?
“I didn’t expect a woman who looks like you to be so funny.”
IN LIGHT OF WOMEN’S MONTH, WHAT IS YOUR MOST POWERFUL FLEX AS A WOMAN?
I make a room listen to me. As a woman, that’s powerful: to speak, to be heard, and to hold your own without shrinking. But I’ve stayed soft. I work in spaces that could’ve made me hard or guarded, but I’ve focused on joy, kindness, and connection. To me, that’s a flex.
IN 2025, AI CAN WRITE COMEDY. BE HONEST: IS CHATGPT YOUR GHOSTWRITER OR YOUR NEMESIS?
Making ChatGPT your nemesis is a bad idea. Have you seen The Terminator? It’s a great brainstorming tool, and I use it to flesh out radio
ideas. I haven’t used it for stand-up yet, but it would help spark gag ideas.
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A NETFLIX SPECIAL, WHAT WOULD IT BE TITLED, AND WHO WOULD DO THE NARRATION?
“Devil’s Advocate: The Angel Campey Story” … or if life goes off the rails, “FALLEN Angel.” And it would, of course, be narrated by my mother.
IF YOU COULD CANCEL ONE CURRENT TIKTOK TREND WITH A SNAP OF YOUR FINGERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I don’t know how to use TikTok, I’m 42, dear reader. I use Instagram and wait for the cool TikTok trends to arrive there. But they should probably stop eating Tide Pods… use green sunlight soap like the rest of us.
WHICH RECENT CELEBRITY SCANDAL WOULD YOU MOST WANT TO TURN INTO A 5-MINUTE STAND-UP BIT, AND WHY?
Honestly, I don’t follow celebrity scandals, unless Beyoncé trips over her fan and turns it into a 12part visual album. Then I’ll pay attention. IB

AFTER DEFINING A GENERATION WITH JAMALI, MARIECHAN LUITERS IS STEPPING INTO HER SOLO ERA WITH RAW HONESTY AND FEARLESS EMOTION. HER “PINCH ME” MOMENTS ON STAGE AND DECISION TO RIP OFF THE BAND-AID IN THE STUDIO REVEAL HOW MARIECHAN IS RECLAIMING HER VOICE.
As one-third of Jamali, the charttopping girl group formed in the early 2000s, Mariechan Luiters helped shape the landscape of South African pop music. Today, she’s carving out her own sound: raw, empowered, and deeply authentic.
“Being in the group helped me not just develop my artistic voice but understand and embrace the different versions of myself that helped shape the evolution of my womanhood.”
“Spending over a decade as a group showed me that the competition was merely the beginning. Surviving in a career has been about persistence, forgiving, growing and learning daily,” Mariechan says reflecting on her rise with Jamali. “The impact our music and unity had didn’t quite sink in until massive crowds sang our songs word for word, and we heard our music on the radio, pinch me moments.”
The shift came when Jamali reached a crossroads.
“Trends change, and Jamali grappled with ‘what’s next?’ It was in that limbo space that we collectively decided to pursue our solo careers. Naturally, we would never stunt one another’s growth, because in the end, we are individuals with our dreams and desires.”
Now, Mariechan’s music leans into raw truth and emotional honesty.
“In this chapter of my life, I’m drawn to raw emotion, an ode to self, ripping off the band-aid that prevents scars from truly healing or saying what I’m feeling.”
She’s witnessed the music industry’s evolution but believes there is still work to be done.
“There are no safety measures for women in music.”
When asked about the possibility of another all-female group, Mariechan is clear:
“Yes. As long as inequality exists in all industries, including music, there will always be a need for women to champion this cause. Although there will never be another Jamali, I believe a group will emerge reflecting the times we live in now.”
Her next chapter is ready.
“Oh darling, the album has BEEN done. The tugof-war with myself is over. I’m putting my heart out there in August, even if it reaches one person, because it reaches no one in my archives. Lol!” IB

FROM OLYMPIC GOLDS TO WORLD RECORDS, THESE FEARLESS WOMEN HAVE SHATTERED BARRIERS AND REDEFINED SPORTS. THEY DIDN’T JUST COMPETE; THEY CHANGED THE GAME FOREVER!
BY BYRON LUKAS
For far too long, the spotlight in sport has been dominated by men, with women’s achievements often pushed to the background. Yet from the 1990s to today, a remarkable group of women has emerged, bold and brilliant, shattering stereotypes, setting records, and inspiring millions worldwide.
In the words of Serena Williams: “Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on.”
From homegrown heroines in South Africa to unstoppable icons across the globe, these women didn’t just participate; they changed the game.
In the post-apartheid sporting era, Penny Heyns became a symbol of hope and excellence for South Africa. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, she made history by winning two gold medals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events, the first South African athlete to do it after the international ban. Heyns’ achievements inspired a nation and reshaped South African swimming
Known simply as Marta, this Brazilian football icon has dominated the sport for decades. With six FIFA World Player of the Year titles, appearances in five World Cups, and four Olympic Games, Marta’s legacy goes beyond her dazzling footwork. Her advocacy for gender equality in football has transformed the landscape for women in the sport, challenging long-standing barriers.
Caster Semenya’s journey is one of resilience and defiance. With multiple Olympic and World Championship golds, she has dominated middledistance running. Despite facing controversy surrounding her gender identity, Semenya has used her platform to champion equality and dignity, showing the world that running one’s own race, on and off the track, is the ultimate form of strength.
Serena Williams, with 23 Grand Slam titles to her name, has revolutionised tennis. Her unmatched power and precision redefined the sport, while her activism for racial justice and women’s rights earned her worldwide admiration. Serena’s career is a testament to breaking limits, proving that greatness has no template.
Tegla Loroupe etched her name in history as the first African woman to win the New York City Marathon in 1994. But beyond her athletic achievements, Loroupe has become a global changemaker, working as a UN peace ambassador and founding the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation, where she advocates for peace and unity through sport.
With two Olympic golds and over 28 world records, Yelena Isinbayeva elevated pole vaulting to new heights. As the first woman to clear the five-metre mark, she brought a combination of grace and power to a traditionally male-dominated sport. Her technical brilliance made women’s track and field a global spectacle.
After losing her leg in a motorbike accident at age 17, Natalie du Toit didn’t give up – she made history. Competing in both the Paralympic and Olympic Games, du Toit showed the world that physical limitations do not define one’s potential. Her incredible journey became a beacon of hope for millions facing adversity.
In 1992, Manon Rhéaume made history as the first woman to play in an NHL game. Taking the ice for the Tampa Bay Lightning in an exhibition match, Rhéaume challenged the gender norms of a deeply male-dominated sport. Her impact went far beyond the rink, she proved that women could excel in any arena.
Across continents and disciplines, these incredible athletes have not only competed, they’ve redefined what it means to play. They didn’t settle for the applause; they demanded respect. When women play, they don’t just change the score; they change the game! IB
With seven Olympic medals and more World Championship medals than any gymnast in history, Simone Biles is the epitome of excellence in her sport. JOHANNESBURG-BORN TRACEY ROSE IS MORE THAN AN ARTIST; SHE’S A DISRUPTOR, DREAMER, AND WORLD-BUILDER. FROM PROVOCATIVE PERFORMANCES TO BAREFOOT PAINTING, DISCOVER HOW SHE CHALLENGES POWER STRUCTURES AND INSPIRES FUTURE FREEDOMS THROUGH RADICAL, UNFLINCHING CREATIVITY.
To call Tracey Rose a provocateur merely scratches the surface of her multifaceted artistry. A conjurer of alternate worlds, the Johannesburgborn artist has, for over two decades, challenged power structures, confronted identity politics, and dismantled colonial legacies, one raw, unflinching piece at a time.
“I am merely its tool… its device,” she says of her work. “The Artwork is the legacy; it holds its truth.”
In typical Tracey Rose fashion, the statement is disarmingly simple yet spiritually charged. Her art speaks loudly, yet she describes it with a humility bordering on mysticism. This tension, between ego and ancestry, chaos and control, defines her creative force.
TETHERED TO JOHANNESBURG, EXPANDING THE WORLD
Rose’s work is deeply tethered to the soil of Johannesburg. “Home is the place where you can take a s**t,” she explains, pulling no punches.
Her candour is both jarring and refreshing, like her performances, unapologetically intimate yet broadcast for public consumption. Whether through video, photography, installation, or painting, Rose explores the physical and metaphysical dimensions of race, gender, and belonging.
Asked what young artists, particularly women of colour, should take from her journey, she responds with clarity: “I’m creating future freedoms by expanding the parameters for others to follow.”
Rose’s impact goes beyond gallery walls. She’s not just making art; she’s creating a space.
Her inspirations range from the cosmic to the politically charged. Among her most incisive works is “If Hitler Was A Girl Who Went To Art School” (2024–2025), which dissects the trope of the “failed artist” to explore how societal rejection can distort creative potential into destructive power.
Rose does not shy away from discomfort; she lives there, creating installations that challenge audiences to confront their biases.
In her studio, her indispensable tool remains analogue: the HB pencil, a nod to the tactile foundation of her process. While her past performances involved stilettos and protest marches, today she chooses paint and gallery openings, barefoot, grounded, present.
A fearless shape-shifter, Rose often steps into bold, controversial personas.
If she were to have a superhero alter ego? “Eve Brown. She would rebirth worlds.”
Rebirth is a recurring motif in Rose’s work. Through ritual, satire, and distortion, she peels back inherited pain to offer something radically transformative.
If her life had a soundtrack, it would blend Jay Williams’ “Sweat,” Madala Kunene’s “Ubombo,” and Shy FX’s “Gangsta Kid.” Rhythms of resistance, rebellion, and resilience.
At her imagined dinner party? God, Gaia, Harriet Tubman. The menu? “A bring and braai.”
Tracey Rose doesn’t just create art; she channels it. From the deeply personal to the politically universal, her work dares us to dream wilder, question louder, and remember who we are and what we’re becoming. IB

ACTRESS, ACTIVIST, AND NOW CREME OF NATURE’S FIRST SOUTH AFRICAN AMBASSADOR, NOMZAMO MBATHA, SHARES WHY EMBRACING NATURAL BEAUTY IS POWERFUL, HOW SHE STAYS ROOTED IN HER VALUES, AND WHAT’S NEXT ON HER JOURNEY OF INSPIRING CHANGE, ONE RADIANT MOMENT AT A TIME.
BY TEMO MPODI
The forever striking force that is Nomzamo Mbatha graces every room she enters with warmth, a radiant smile, and effortless class. Be it her philanthropic work, fashion, beauty, or hair, Nomzamo continues to shift the status quo – uplifting and inspiring everyone around her.
We caught up with her to talk about becoming the first ambassador for Creme of Nature, her vision for beauty that celebrates all hair textures, and the exciting projects she has lined up. A now and forever impactful, internationally certified It Girl, Nomzamo is redefining what it means to lead with purpose and power.
YOU ARE THE FIRST-EVER SOUTH AFRICAN AMBASSADOR FOR CREME OF NATURE. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT?
It’s an incredible honour. To know that a brand that stands for heritage, identity, natural beauty, and the diversity of our textured coils trusts me to carry this message and lead the front fills me with deep pride and excitement. It makes me look forward to growing the brand on the continent and seeing how far we can go together!
THE CAMPAIGN IS CALLED “ROOTED IN RADIANCE.” HOW DO YOU INTERPRET THAT MESSAGE IN YOUR OWN LIFE AND JOURNEY?
To be authentically and fully myself. Rooted in the essence of my inner radiance, whether it’s through the hair that grows from my scalp or the self-confidence that anchors me.
WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR TEXTURED HAIR TO BE CELEBRATED IN THE MAINSTREAM BEAUTY SPACE TODAY?
It sends a message of selflove and appreciation, showing that textured hair comes in many kinks and coils, all deserving to be celebrated, highlighted, and embraced. The beauty industry has historically had a very linear view of textured
hair, either relaxed and straightened or kept natural. Now, we’re seeing a much wider variety celebrated, creating demand for products that help hair flourish in every form.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS AND WOMEN WHO ARE LEARNING TO EMBRACE THEIR NATURAL HAIR?
Embrace and celebrate your hair. Build a relationship with it and pay attention to how it responds to different styles, treatments, and products. Our textured hair is what makes us unique.
YOU JUGGLE ROLES AS AN ACTRESS, HUMANITARIAN, AND NOW BEAUTY AMBASSADOR. HOW DO YOU STAY SO GROUNDED?
The people I encounter on socials, in malls, at events, on the streets, in my hometown, and around the world give me purpose. They remind me that what I represent, speak on, and stand for resonates with them and empowers them to love themselves even more.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU (EITHER IN BEAUTY, ACTING, OR ACTIVISM) THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?
I’m working on an exciting project with Crème of Nature! I’m also in the process of building two school libraries in partnership with the Cotton On Foundation. There’s another exciting film project on the horizon, and I’m truly looking forward to a little rest. I
Being by the ocean. Fancy hotels (my guilty pleasure). The sound of children laughing. POPCORN! A great book. And I LOVE stressing my neck with big hairstyles. Lol! IB
CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST SIVE, FOUNDER OF MARTINI BEAUTY, SHARES HOW MASTERING YOUR GIFT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR PASSION INTO A PASSPORT. FROM SUBTLE, POLISHED LOOKS TO HEARTFELT MOMENTS WITH CLIENTS, DISCOVER HOW BEAUTY BECOMES A STORY WORTH TELLING.
BY TEMO MPODI
TELL US ABOUT MARTINI
BEAUTY
Martini Beauty is where makeup meets structure, a blend of technical mastery and creative flair. It’s more than a brand; it’s a celebration of beauty done with intention and care.
WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT WITH MAKEUP, OR DID YOUR PASSION GROW OVER TIME?
Love at first sight. The beauty world captured my attention early on, and I was mesmerised by it. But the passion deepened when I started doing makeup for others. I realised it was something I was meant to do.
HOW DID YOU CARVE OUT YOUR NICHE AND BECOME A CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST?
It wasn’t something I mapped out strategically. It’s been a mix of relentless passion, showing up, and divine intervention. I genuinely believe God had a hand in this. The journey has been so specific and surreal that I could’ve never carved it out on my own.
YOUR MAKEUP IS PERFECT, YET SUBTLE AND CLASSY. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO ACHIEVE THAT?
It’s always been about enhancing what’s already there, not overpowering it. I’ve spent years studying faces, learning about light, colour theory, and working with different textures. That balance between restraint and detail is what helps me create that effortless, polished look.
ARE THERE ANY GO-TO BRANDS YOU CONSISTENTLY REACH FOR?
I love brands that deliver on quality and skin compatibility. I lean towards products that don’t mask the skin but work with it. I’m all about products that elevate without shouting.
I always use:
• Yardley 3-in-1 Setting Spray
• Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation
TRAVELLING FROM ONE COUNTRY TO THE OTHER, HAS THIS BECOME YOUR STORY?
Yes, it has, and I’m still in awe of it. This year alone, I’ve worked in four different countries, and I’ve got more coming up. I always pause and say, “Wow… this is actually my life.” It still feels surreal that makeup has become my passport.
THAT SHIFTED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE?
A recent talk about stewardship reminded me that this gift I have isn’t random; it’s something God placed in my life for a purpose. It’s a reminder that even in beauty, there is meaning.
Doing someone’s makeup means entering their personal space, creating an intimate, safe zone where they can feel seen, appreciated, and confident. IB

Through carefully crafted couture, founder William De Beer continues to influence the creative space, one design at a time.
YOUR BRAND EMBODIES CLASS AND ELEGANCE. WAS THIS ALWAYS YOUR CHILDHOOD FANTASY?
My fashion journey began remarkably early, sparked by a childhood fascination. At just seven years old, watching Cruella De Vil’s elaborate couture in 101 Dalmatians ignited my passion for design. This inspiration evolved into a profound understanding of the female form and a desire to empower through silhouette. A meticulous approach, rooted in creating confidence for women, quickly distinguished Willet Designs Couture.
WHICH FABRICS ARE BEST FOR MAKING LUXURY DRESSES?
We select only the most luxurious couture fabrics, such as Armani satin, cascading silk, and shimmering silk mesh.
HOW DO YOU MAKE THE FABRIC COME ALIVE?
Each piece becomes a masterpiece, with Swarovski crystals and glass beads hand-beaded by skilled artisans in-house. This dedication to traditional, intricate hand-beading and our expertise in corsetry contribute to the brand’s luxurious appeal, setting a benchmark for quality and artistry in the industry.
AFRICAN LUXURY BRANDS ARE MAKING WAVES GLOBALLY. WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE SECRET TO RECOGNITION?
We actively shape the future of South African fashion by pushing the boundaries of couture craftsmanship. Our unique specialisation in corsetry sets new standards for luxury and garment construction, creating pieces that are globally appealing yet distinctly rooted.
HOW CAN EXCEPTIONAL TALENT BE NURTURED IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
Collaboration is key. Firms like LEO SZN contribute significantly to nurturing talent, offering strategic counsel to navigate the complexities of the South African fashion industry while supporting creative and business development.
WHICH THREE CITIES DOMINATE THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
Paris, Milan, and New York remain our favourite sources of inspiration.
WHAT ARE THE THREE SECRETS TO LOOKING CLASSY AND LUXURIOUS?
Less is always more. Fit is everything. When something is constructed well, it doesn’t need much effort to look luxurious. A Willet corset, a strong silhouette, and good garment construction are key. IB

This no-jumping, no-equipment, no-excuses workout is built for real life, where floor space is limited, neighbours are light sleepers, and motivation sometimes needs a gentle nudge. Best of all? It takes just 30 minutes, making it easy to stick to your fitness goals no matter where you are.
Say goodbye to rigid routines and hello to smart, feel-good movement that travels as well as you do.
• Duration: 30 minutes
• Target: Full-body strength, control and endurance
• Fitness level: Beginner to Intermediate
• Equipment: None
You’ll kick things off with a gentle warm-up to get your joints moving and muscles activated, then move into two simple yet effective circuits.
Every exercise is low-impact, making the routine joint-friendly while still delivering that feel-good burn.
“This is fitness without the fluff, intentional and travel-ready,” says Zamo. “For anyone looking to stay consistent without needing a gym, this workout proves that short and structured sessions can be incredibly impactful, no matter where the road takes you.”

MEET THE RANGE ROVER SV BLACK, THE SUV SO SLEEK IT MAKES BLACK HOLES LOOK UNDERDRESSED. FROM VIBRATING FLOORS TO A 452KW V8 ENGINE, THIS IS BATMAN’S AFTER-HOURS RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DON’T JUST ARRIVE, THEY MAKE ENTRANCES.
BY BYRON LUKAS
Hello, it’s me again, returning with another unnecessarily glamorous test drive, because reviewing everyday cars is so last season.
This time, we cruised around in what looks like Batman’s after-hours ride: the Range Rover SV Black. This isn’t just any SUV. This is the SUV that makes other SUVs question their life choices.
At first glance, the SV Black looks like it was forged in the fires of Mount Luxury. Wrapped in Narvik Gloss Black, it’s so sleek it makes a black hole seem underdressed. No chrome, no bling, no need to shout. It simply whispers, “I’m rich,” in the most elegant British accent you’ve ever heard.
You get 23-inch gloss black alloy wheels, brake callipers with just enough attitude, and detailing so black it could be your ex’s heart.
Step in, and it’s a total vibe. The Near-Aniline Ebony leather feels like it was stitched by angels in tuxedos. The seamless single-panel seat covers look like luxury clouds, while black birch wood and Moonlight Chrome elevate the cabin to TED Talk levels of luxury.
Even the satin black ceramic gear shifter feels like a mood.
Forget surround sound. The SV Black lets you feel music in your soul and your socks. Enter the Body-And-Soul-Seat (BASS) and Sensory Floor technology. Yes, the floor vibrates, but not in a weird nightclub way; in a perfectly engineered, AI-optimised way.
With six wellness modes (I tried “Calm” after Joburg traffic), you’ll feel more emotionally stable than after three yoga retreats and a juice cleanse.
Under the hood sits a 452kW V8 engine, translating to “hello” to “hold on” in no time. Power delivery is as smooth as its voice, and whether you choose the standard or long wheelbase, you’ll glide down the highway like you own the dealership (which, if you’re buying this, you probably do).
Prices start at R5,269,200, and if you fancy more legroom, the long wheelbase version will set you back R5,718,700. That’s the price of two homes or one very serious flex.
With a global release in late 2025, the Range Rover SV Black is for those who don’t just arrive, they make entrances. Bold, beautiful, and ready to judge you silently if you wear Crocs inside. Until our next journey! IB

In the village of Chamarel, nature has created a geological masterpiece that defies explanation. The Seven Coloured Earths present a surreal landscape where dunes display distinct bands
of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow hues. This natural phenomenon, caused by volcanic rock decomposition and mineral deposits, remains vibrant regardless of weather conditions. The site spans approximately 7 500m² within the Chamarel Geopark, accessible from protected viewing platforms.
Private island escapes to Ile aux Cerfs and Ile aux Bénitiers promise luxury far from the crowds. Think
helicopter transfers, champagne picnics, and bespoke water sports. Dedicated photographers capture each moment, while private chefs prepare gourmet meals. Ile aux Cerfs offers pristine beaches, an 18-hole golf course, and ideal conditions for parasailing, waterskiing, and deepsea fishing adventures.
Established in 1997, Blue Bay Marine Park represents one of Mauritius’s most pristine marine sanctuaries. This 353-hectare protected reserve offers snorkelling in crystal-clear waters averaging 5.5 metres in depth. The park’s coral gardens host over 50 species of coral, some over 800 years old, alongside vibrant marine life including parrotfish, butterflyfish, and occasional sea turtles. Glass-bottom boat excursions provide access to the park’s heart, where protected coral formations thrive away from shore-based tourism.
Mauritius’s southwest coast hides an extraordinary optical illusion: an underwater waterfall seen only from above. Helicopter tours over Le Morne Peninsula reveal sand and silt creating the illusion of cascading water beneath the sea. These flights showcase the island’s mountainous interior, coral-fringed coastline, and Le Morne Brabant’s historical significance, offering unforgettable views with Air Mauritius and local operators.
The island’s mountainous interior harbours some of the world’s most scenic tea plantations. At Bois Chéri Tea Factory, visitors embark on guided tours through emerald-green tea fields, learning cultivation and processing techniques passed down through generations. The plantation, established in 1892, remains Mauritius’s oldest tea estate and offers comprehensive experiences including factory tours, tastings, and museum visits.
At the Central Market, local guides lead intimate walks through spice-filled alleys and street food stalls, ending with hands-on cooking classes. Visit the Blue Penny Museum to explore the island’s history, then wander the lively Caudan Waterfront. Nearby, the Aapravasi Ghat commemorates Mauritius’s role in global indentured labour, adding depth to your island adventure.
The Black River Gorges National Park encompasses over 6 500ha of indigenous forest, offering exceptional hiking opportunities for nature enthusiasts. This protected area represents the island’s largest remaining fragment of native forest, serves as a sanctuary for endemic species, including the Mauritius kestrel and pink pigeon –both remarkable conservation success stories.
The park’s network of trails leads to spectacular viewpoints, hidden waterfalls, and pristine forest pools perfect for refreshing swims.
The Le Morne Brabant mountain serves as both a natural wonder and a cultural monument.
This World Heritage site commemorates the island’s painful slavery history, having served as a refuge for escaped slaves. The hiking trail to the summit rewards adventurers with breathtaking 360-degree views encompassing the underwater waterfall illusion, neighbouring islands, and endless ocean horizons.
For travellers seeking destinations that blend luxury with authenticity, and natural beauty with deep cultural richness, Mauritius is a sanctuary unlike any other. IB

AFTER A DEMANDING YEAR, MY FAMILY AND I WERE IN DESPERATE NEED OF A BREAK –SOMEWHERE WE COULD RECONNECT, RECHARGE, AND IMMERSE OURSELVES IN NATURAL BEAUTY AND TRANQUILLITY. I COULD THINK OF NOWHERE BETTER THAN THE PARADISE ISLAND OF MAURITIUS, WHICH PROMISED BEACH BLISS, ENDLESS PAMPERING, AND TOTAL RELAXATION.
BY ALETHEA NAIDOO
From the moment we arrived, we knew we had made the right decision. Our destination on the island was Le Jadis Beach Resort & Wellness, a sanctuary where sustainable luxury meets unparalleled privacy. It became our home for the week , this amalgamate of the natural world and refined elegance, where excellence is present in every detail.
SURRENDER TO RELAXATION
The name Mauritius conjures images of turquoise waters, golden beaches, and lush greenery – and the reality is even more spectacular. Our stay at Le Jadis wasn’t just a holiday; it was a deeply restorative experience. We were enveloped in an atmosphere of
comfort, care, and thoughtful detail, all designed to encourage rest and wellbeing.
What truly distinguishes Le Jadis from the rest is the resort’s meticulous approach to guest experience and its commitment to sustainability. Upon arrival, we were welcomed and presented with a personalised itinerary – a perfect balance of curated activities and generous downtime. There was no need to plan or decide; everything was seamlessly arranged, allowing us to fully embrace the island’s gentle rhythm.
A SPACE OF OUR OWN
Our suite was a beautifully designed retreat combining style, space, and serenity. A private balcony overlooked the still ocean, while inside,
sustainable luxury materials gave the space a calm, natural feel. The layout prioritised privacy with a spacious bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, and a rainfall shower that opened directly onto our temperature-controlled private infinity pool –an unforgettable highlight. Soaking in the warm water at dawn, or gazing at the stars in the evening, became a peaceful ritual. The bed, too, was pure comfort, and every amenity added to a profound sense of ease and wellness.
The resort itself is a haven. There is ample space around the main pool, offering plenty of secluded sun-lounging spots. Strategically placed bars ensured refreshments were never far away. One evening, we wandered down to the beach to watch the sunset – a kaleidoscope of colour that transformed the sky into something almost sacred. We sipped sundowners as the golden light melted into the horizon – a moment of quiet beauty we’ll never forget.
Le Jadis offers a wealth of wellness experiences in a spa that instantly soothes. I especially loved the hydrotherapy pool – a deeply relaxing, almost meditative experience that left me feeling completely renewed. Treatments are carried out using natural, sustainable products, which felt in tune with the resort’s ethos of mindful luxury.
And then there’s the food. Each meal was a delight – locally sourced ingredients crafted into dishes that were both inventive and comforting. The restaurant exuded a relaxed elegance, and the service was exceptional throughout. Every dining experience felt considered and personal.
Perhaps the most memorable part of our stay was the staff. From arrival to departure, we were met with genuine warmth and gracious hospitality. Every team member we encountered was professional, kind, and attentive. The small touches – thoughtful gestures, personalised attention – made us feel truly cared for.
Le Jadis is more than a resort — it’s an experience. A place where luxury meets authenticity, where tranquillity is thoughtfully designed, and where sustainability isn’t an afterthought, but a way of life.
If you’re planning a honeymoon, a romantic escape, a family retreat or simply some time out with good friends, Le Jadis Beach Resort & Wellness in Mauritius is a destination that will leave a lasting impression; a slice of paradise you’ll want to return to – again and again.
It’s perfect for honeymooners, couples, families and friends – in short, anybody craving an elegant, restorative break! IB

IT WAS THE KIND OF WILDLIFE MOMENT YOU WISH YOU COULD BOTTLE AND SAVE FOREVER. THIS WAS CHICHELE PRESIDENTIAL LODGE, PERCHED GRACEFULLY ATOP SOUTH LUANGWA’S PRESIDENT HILL, AND I KNEW IMMEDIATELY I’D FOUND SOMEWHERE SPECIAL.
BY SARAH KINGDOM
South Luangwa National Park itself is often described as the birthplace of the walking safari, thanks to the pioneering efforts of Norman Carr in the 1950s. Established first as a game reserve in 1904 and declared a national park in 1972, it sprawls across more than 9 000km² of riverine forest, miombo and mopane woodlands, ideal terrain for the abundant wildlife that defines this wilderness.
Chichele Presidential Lodge itself has a layered story. Originally finished in 1972 as a private retreat for Zambia’s first president, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, it later welcomed Queen Elizabeth II, representatives of the ANC and various other dignitaries. Over time, it fell into disrepair. But now a new breath of life has been injected into the lodge.
After a full redesign by architect Jack Alexander and brand-new interiors by Fox Browne Creative, the lodge offers ten luxurious villa-style suites with plunge pools, an infinity pool, spa, gym, and, perhaps most importantly, unrivalled valley views. My suite had huge, double-height sliding glass doors that slid open onto a private deck and my private plunge pool. From my verandah, I could track the daily pageant of wildlife on the floodplain below.
A herd of impala glanced up from their grazing, a small family of elephants, babies in tow, ambled towards the river, and kudus with their trademark corkscrew horns browsed nearby like shy sentinels. It felt like I was experiencing a front-row private safari without even needing to leave the comfort of my room.
Though, of course, when I did leave my room to head out on game drives, they were everything I had hoped for and more. One morning, our guide manoeuvred us close to a pride of lions lounging in the warmth of the morning sun. The male flicked his tail, side to side, lazily, while the lionesses lounged on their backs in shafts of early morning sunlight. Serene and regal, yet undeniably powerful.
Night drives added a thrilling dimension. The spotlight beam revealed hyenas scavenging, genets foraging, and the large, round, blinking eyes of bush babies. One moonlit evening, a leopard strolled into view, sauntering along the road in front of us, before slipping into the shadows, just as silently as it had appeared.
Better still were the walks. Alongside a seasoned ranger and armed scout, we traced spoor and studied insect life up close, learning how termites build entire kingdoms underground, and how dung beetles sculpt spheres of life. This connection to smaller moments, tiny dramas of the bush, deepened the safari narrative in a way no vehicle ever could.
Chichele’s communal areas were the perfect blend of elegance and comfort. The main colonial-style lounge, complete with an open fireplace and comfortable seating, encouraged conversation at every hour. But it was the wide terrace where we spent most of our time, watching sunrise, dining, enjoying evening cocktails while the valley glowed gold, even spotting the flash of a leopard or elephant from a distance.
Meals were a treat. Breakfast might begin with Eggs Benedict, while dinner was a refined three-course affair, tables set outdoors, crowned by candlelight and the hush of night.
And then there’s the elephant memory. On my final morning, I counted nearly a dozen of them gathered by the lodge’s river flats, trumpeting softly before moving on. That mix of wilderness and luxury feels deliberate – the lodge’s designers have ensured every lookout, every deck, every room captures the heart of the valley’s pulse.
What impressed me most was how Chichele seems to honour its heritage while embracing the future. Its very name, ‘Chichele’, meaning salt in the local Chewa language, echoes the lodge’s ties to the surrounding land and its mineral-dusted soil. You feel connected to both past and present, and at the same time, rooted in that sense of living and breathing safari excellence.
South Luangwa has always been a jewel among safari destinations. Its rivers teem with hippos and crocodiles, flood plains attract huge pelican flocks, and miombo forests shelter Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest, and myriad antelope species. But Chichele has carved out its niche within that mosaic: elevated, elegant, and undeniably experiential.
For those seeking a safari with a sense of depth and history, Chichele is a balance of sensory immersion, creature comforts, and privileged access. From verandah wildlife sightings to the thrill of lion sightings on the plains, this is the kind of place where you wake up wondering just how much more the day could offer, and then it manages to surprise you anyway. Maximise your travel time by planning smartly, before you even leave the hotel. Download apps like FlightAware or your airline’s official app to stay updated with real-time changes.
Forget the crowded boarding gate, executive lounges have evolved into sleek, functional spaces perfect for business and relaxation. For example, the Centurion Lounge at Heathrow features private phone booths for calls, while select American Express lounges offer spa treatments. Why waste time at a gate?
Mobile boarding passes aren’t just convenient, they’re even more powerful when paired with airline loyalty programmes and biometric systems. Many international airports now use biometric passport control, speeding up immigration for South African travellers.
Your smartphone’s digital wallet, like Apple Wallet or Google Pay, automatically compiles and updates boarding passes, hotel reservations, and car hire details in real-time. No more rifling through emails or juggling paper.
When it comes to travel comfort, terminal choice makes all the difference. At Singapore Changi, you’ll find a rooftop pool, while Dubai International offers sleep pods, perfect for recharging. Connection times can vary widely. At Heathrow, British Airways recommends a minimum of 90 minutes for international transfers, while 60 minutes may be sufficient for domestic connections within the same terminal. Knowing your airport layout can mean the difference between a seamless transfer and a stressful sprint to your gate.
Smart travellers plan ahead. Download offline airport maps, keep your travel insurance details easily accessible, and stay in touch with a reliable travel agent who can swiftly manage last-minute changes or rebookings.
True airport mastery isn’t about rushing; it’s about being prepared. The journey should feel just as rewarding as the destination. IB

PROFESSOR THOKO MAYEKISO, THE PIONEERING FOUNDING VICECHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MPUMALANGA, EMBODIES RESILIENCE AND EXCELLENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA’S HIGHER EDUCATION LANDSCAPE.
With a distinguished career that spans continents and decades, she remains a steadfast advocate for transformation, innovation, and gender equity within academia.
In celebration of Women’s Month, Inbound SA Magazine sat down with Professor Mayekiso to reflect on her extraordinary journey, her forwardthinking vision for future generations, and the vital role women play in shaping society.
Q: As a pioneering woman in South African academia, what does Women’s Month mean to you personally, and how do you see its relevance evolving for future generations of women leaders?
A: Women’s month provides us with an opportunity to reflect and celebrate the visionary and courageous women who marched to Pretoria on 9 August 1956, as their story and courage continue to inspire us.
Their resilience is powerfully captured in that powerful saying, “Wathinta abafazi, wathint’imbokodo”.
We are continually reminded by their courage and tenacity that we must invest time, energy, and resources to ensure that future generations of women succeed and lead meaningful lives. Women’s month also gives us the chance to advocate for equality, equity, justice, and fairness.
It signifies that women and men should coexist, connected by strands of mutual respect and reciprocal appreciation.
Q: Your leadership at the University of Mpumalanga has broken new ground. What have been some of the biggest challenges and triumphs you’ve experienced as a woman in a top executive role in higher education?
A: When I was appointed in November 2014, my mandate as the Founding Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga was to establish the new University, build a firm foundation, put systems in place, have guiding policies and procedures and create a conducive ecology.
In my inauguration address in May 2015, I made the following commitment: “Generations yet unborn must find a thriving University, one they will be proud to join, because we who pioneered it laid a firm foundation and embarked on this immense project with body, mind, and soul.”
Establishing a new university on its own was an exciting challenge. One needed to be visionary, guided by the art of possibility, purpose, and always keep the bigger picture in mind.
By 2025, the university will have enrolled 11,886 students (62% female and 48% male) across 80 programmes ranging from higher certificates to doctoral degrees.
We have a pass rate of 80%. Our students study in iconic buildings and state-of-the-art facilities.
Q: Women’s empowerment is often tied to education and opportunity. How is the University of Mpumalanga fostering a learning environment that uplifts and equips young women to lead in their fields?
A: The strapline of the University of Mpumalanga is “creating opportunities,” indicating the university’s commitment to providing opportunities for its stakeholders.
The university has created numerous opportunities for women, both staff and students, to self-actualise and reach their full potential. These opportunities include scholarships, bursaries, personal and leadership development programmes, career development initiatives, and participation in national and international events.
The University of Mpumalanga is committed to the holistic development of students and promotes their cognitive, personal, social, physical, and aesthetic growth in pursuit of democratic citizenship. In this regard, the university focuses on high-quality curricula and co-curricular activities.
UMP prepares its graduates to be resourceful, responsible, and responsive; to be innovative and entrepreneurial; to possess critical thinking skills; to be confident and effective
communicators; to be ethically and socially aware change agents; and to be adaptable.
Q: In your view, what systemic changes are still needed within South Africa’s education and leadership spaces to ensure more equitable representation and support for women?
A: Indeed, systemic changes are still needed within South Africa’s education and leadership spaces to ensure more equitable representation and support for women. The forces of patriarchy are still out there in full force. Gender bias still rears its ugly head in many ways.
competencies enhanced.
We need to deal decisively with sexism, femicide, gender-based violence, sexual harassment and male domination. There should be concerted efforts to celebrate the women who have achieved. These accomplished women become role models for other women to emulate.
They get exposed to women they can identify with who are successful.
The following must remain under our watchful eye: Advocating for equal rights; eradicating gender-based violence; dismantling patriarchy; advancing financial independence for women; advocating for workplace equity and equality; firming up mentoring and coaching programmes to fast-track their development; offering empowerment programmes for women in all spheres; creating safe spaces for women, in the institutions, the work place and all other environments where women learn, protecting them from the scourge of sexual harassment and; entrepreneurship programmes – with an inclination to get women entrepreneurial skills and
Q: As someone who has inspired many through both your academic journey and leadership, what message would you share with young South African women aspiring to make a meaningful impact in their communities and careers?
A: I would encourage young South African women to have high expectations of themselves. When they do that, others start having high expectations of them, and this is how they will succeed in the workplace and their communities.
They need to have the will and determination to succeed and the resilience and mental toughness to withstand difficulties and challenges. IB

In 2022, South Africa took a monumental step towards a more sustainable, circular economy by introducing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations. This landmark move requires businesses to take responsibility for the packaging they produce, sell, or import, ensuring that even after use, packaging waste is managed responsibly.
For companies in South Africa that manufacture, import, or sell plastic packaging, the obligation to comply with EPR regulations is clear. Businesses must now register with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), pay EPR fees, and ensure that post-consumer waste is collected and disposed of responsibly.
Non-compliance with the EPR regulations could lead to penalties, legal ramifications, and reputational damage. Moreover, it undermines the effort to make the packaging sector in South Africa more sustainable, inclusive, and credible.
Rather than seeing EPR compliance as a burden, businesses should view it as a strategic opportunity. Adopting sustainable practices not only reduces environmental impact but also improves your business’s reputation among consumers, investors, and regulators.
Being proactive in meeting these obligations puts you ahead of the curve in a world where environmental responsibility is no longer optional.
Polyco, a trusted Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), is helping South African businesses comply with EPR regulations. Polyco offers a streamlined, efficient, and transparent way to manage packaging waste compliance.
With over 700 registered members in the plastics packaging sector, Polyco works with businesses of all sizes to ensure they meet their EPR obligations while making a tangible impact on the environment.
As a non-profit, industry-led organisation, Polyco not only manages EPR compliance but also supports long-term sustainability initiatives. By working with government bodies, communities, and stakeholders, Polyco ensures that its members can focus on what they do best while meeting all their legal requirements.

Polyco’s dedicated team works closely with you to ensure your compliance processes are smooth and efficient.

THE BIOPHILIC DESIGN TREND, THE APPROACH THAT INTEGRATES NATURAL ELEMENTS INTO BUILT ENVIRONMENTS, FROM A FEW YEARS BACK HAS SIGNIFICANTLY EVOLVED BEYOND JUST INCORPORATING PLANTS INTO INTERIORS. WHILE PLANTS REMAIN AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT, THE CONCEPT NOW ENCOMPASSES A BROADER RANGE OF NATURE-BASED DESIGN STRATEGIES AIMED AT ENHANCING HUMAN WELL-BEING. HERE ARE SOME WAYS BIOPHILIC DESIGN HAS EVOLVED AND REMAINS RELEVANT IN 2025, AND WHAT I USED AS PRINCIPLES IN THE DECORATING OF HOME CILLIERS. A HERITAGE HOME BUILT IN 1940 IN IRENE COUNTRY ESTATE, GAUTENG.
Colour plays a vital role in the “new” biophilic design, shaping our perception and emotional response to a space. Drawing inspiration from nature, I selected colours that mirror the hues found in the natural surroundings of the estate and the garden of the home. I refer to this as “a placebased relationship” with the environment. The architecture of the home was also a consideration throughout the design process.
By incorporating natural wood finishes, stone textures, cladding, and neutral colours, I brought the outdoors inside, creating a harmonious and welcoming atmosphere. The outside comes inside: a flow. A fundamental interior principle: “rhythm”.
Lighting is another crucial element I incorporated in this project. Natural light, in particular, has been shown to offer numerous benefits for our well-being, including regulating circadian (sleeping) rhythms and improving our mood. I maximised the use of natural light by utilising the large windows and leaving window treatments, such as curtains, where privacy is not needed. This ensured that most spaces were filled with sunlight throughout the day.
I also did not clutter the home, but kept open floor plans to facilitate the flow of natural light throughout the space. A client brief through an initial style questionnaire and consultation was
pivotal as to keep the style preferences of the Cilliers family in consideration. They prefer the clean, open spaces. I never try and force “my” taste/ style onto a client. My style in my own home is maximalist.
Mirrors were used throughout the home and lightcoloured surfaces to reflect and amplify natural light, with the kitchen counter tops as a good example.
The natural light was also essential when the photos,
by Interiors and Architectures photographer Francois Pistorius Photography, were taken. He is one of the very few photographers who uses ONLY natural light in all his shoots. No cluttering photography equipment or assistants, just him and his camera “clicking” away. Through this process, more privacy and less inconvenience are also ensured for my client.
The natural light was also essential when the photos, by Interiors and Architectures photographer Francois Pistorius Photography, were taken. Through this process, more privacy and less inconvenience are also ensured for my client. In addition to natural light, the quality and temperature of artificial lighting can also play a significant role. Warm lighting, which mimics the soft glow of the sun, can create a cosy and inviting ambience. Layering different types of lighting, such as task, ambient, and accent lighting, can further enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of a space. I even played around with candles and “candle heaters” – ask me about this (“wink”).
Materiality refers to the selection and use of materials in interior design. In my design process, the focus was on using natural materials that evoke a sense of connection to the environment. This included elements like wood, stone, natural fabrics, and, but not only, plants/flowers.
Natural materials not only add aesthetic value but also contribute to the sensory richness of a space. For instance, the texture of the wooden floors, the cooler “touch” of the stone countertops, or the softness of the voile curtains in the main bedroom engage the senses and create a more immersive and comforting home. TRANSFORM YOUR SPACE WITH THE BOLD ALLURE OF COLOUR-DRENCHING. ONE SHADE, ALL SURFACES, WALLS, CEILINGS, EVEN FURNITURE, FOR A LOOK THAT’S STRIKING YET SNUG. STEP AWAY FROM THE ORDINARY AND DIVE INTO A WORLD WHERE DESIGN DARES TO STAND OUT, YET STILL FEELS LIKE HOME.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
If your walls are craving drama and neutrals feel dull, colour drenching might be the refresh you need. “It’s like wrapping the entire room in one unified tone,” says Patty Mulauzi, Digital and Content Creation Manager for Plascon. This immersive technique eliminates visual breaks, creating a cocoonlike effect that’s soothing or dramatic. “It can actually make a space feel larger,” Mulauzi adds. Ready to try it? Here’s how to drench like a pro.
1. PICK YOUR COLOUR (WISELY!)
Choose a shade that suits the mood – deeper hues for drama, softer tones for calm. “You can purchase sample testers and test out your colour choices on the wall,” Mulauzi recommends. “This is the best way to test colour in your home.”
2. GO ALL IN
This isn’t the time for restraint. “Paint everything! Walls, ceiling, skirtings, doors,” Mulauzi insists. “The more you cover, the better the effect.” Use different finishes to create interest: try matte on walls and satin or gloss on woodwork for a subtle contrast. “Mixing finishes adds depth while staying in the same colour family,” says Mulauzi.
3. PREP LIKE A PRO
“A single colour shows every flaw,” Mulauzi warns, “so good preparation is key.” Fill cracks, smooth surfaces, and prime thoroughly to get that sleek finish.
4. LAYER WITH TEXTURE
To keep the look from feeling one-dimensional, Mulauzi suggests: “Layer in fabrics, furniture, and décor in similar tones to keep the space rich and inviting.”
5. NOT READY TO DRENCH IT ALL? START SMALL
Try colour drenching in a small space first, like a powder room, hallway, or reading nook. Or experiment by painting a piece of furniture in the same colour as the walls for a chic, built-in effect. IB

This drink recipe is believed to date back to the late 1800s and is made with a mixture of whiskey, sweet vermouth and a dash of bitters. Traditionally rye whiskey was used to create this much-loved drink, which led to Canadian whiskey finding its way into many a Manhattan. In the last century, bourbon has become the whiskey of choice.
INGREDIENTS
• ice
• 2 parts whiskey
• 1-part sweet vermouth
• 1-2 dishes of bitters like Angostura
• an orange peel
• real maraschino cherries, made by combining 1 cup of maraschino liqueur with 1 pint sour cherries, stemmed and pitted (use a tin of cherries and drain the syrup)
METHOD
1. Add whiskey, vermouth and bitters to ice in a cocktail shaker and blend.
2. Rub the orange peel around the rim of the cocktail glass.
3. Strain the drink into the glass.
4. Add 1 or 2 maraschino cherries and enjoy (serves 1).

When Cubitus decided to shoot for the stars, they didn’t just build a watch; they engineered a celestial marvel. The 5822P-001 is less a wristwatch and more a cosmic artefact. Crafted from platinum and powered by a 22K gold rotor, it turns timekeeping into an art form.
At the heart of this timepiece is the revolutionary Calibre 240 PS CI J LU. Just 4.76mm thin, this ultra-slim self-winding movement is packed with 353 components and boasts six patents pending. You get a double aperture grand date at 12 o’clock, a hand-indicated day, instantaneous moon phase jumps, and small seconds, a full cosmic calendar in one incredibly engineered package.
The dial? A shimmering sunburst blue, with embossed textures, white gold baton hour markers, and luminous hands for easy reading. A baguette-cut diamond at 6 o’clock adds a flicker of starlight, in case the rest wasn’t luxe enough
Sized at 45mm, the platinum case has a two-part construction with polished and satin finishes.
Surprisingly slim at 9.6 mm, a powerful look! Turn it over and you’re greeted by a sapphire crystal case back showcasing the 22K gold mini-rotor with a horizontal motif, pure mechanical poetry.
It comes with a navy-blue composite strap, finished with cream contrast stitching and a platinum Cubitus fold-over clasp. Understated but confident, like a luxury suit with sneakers.
With 30m water resistance, it’s not meant for underwater adventures. But let’s be honest, no one’s diving in diamonds.
If a platinum spaceship and a Swiss chronograph had a baby, this would be it. Currently, it’s POA and available at Sandton City Shopping Centre. IB

Dear Self,
There you were, fresh out of your resignation glow, living your best “fun-employment” life without a single plan in sight. No LinkedIn stalking, no desperate job applications at 2am in your pyjamas, just pure blissful freedom and a healthy appetite for free canapés and Chardonnay.
But here’s the thing about the universe - it has a cheeky way of delivering exactly what you need when you’re not even looking for it.
Enter Shaun and Elroy, your nowbosses, who you discovered had just returned from Mauritius, where they met Sophie – yes, that Sophie, the one you grew up with!
That corporate event you attended purely for free food turns out to be your most strategic career move.
That led to an immediate threeway selfie and frantic WhatsApp messages to Sophie, because nothing says “small world” quite like discovering your childhood friend accidentally preinterviewed your future bosses on a tropical island.
That magical concoction?
It landed you right here, writing this very column for the fabulous readers of INBOUND SA. Talk about being in the right place at the right time – with the right attitude and possibly the right number of bubbles.
The moral of this deliciously serendipitous story? Sometimes the biggest leaps require closing doors completely before new
ones swing wide open. Resigning without a backup plan felt terrifying, but it was also the most liberating act of faith you’ve ever taken – right up there with wearing that white dress and trusting the universe won’t let you spill red sauce on it.
Because let’s face it, every time you dare wear white to dine, your clothing taunts you with every bite: “I’m hungry, let me have a taste of that.”
Staying authentically, you – quirky, bubbly, slightly obsessed with your “what’s the worst that can happen?” approach to life – is exactly what made the right people notice you. No pretending, no corporate mask, just pure, unapologetic Milou energy.
Looking back at this rollercoaster year of adventures, hard work, and ladder-climbing, there’s nothing but gratitude. Thank you, Shaun and Elroy, for seeing something special in a woman who showed up for free food and stayed for the genuine connections.
Takeaway tip: Trust the process, never underestimate the power of being exactly who you are. The universe has impeccable timing –and apparently, excellent taste in networking events.
So, here’s to accidental networking, fearless career leaps, and the beautiful chaos that happens when you stop trying so hard and start living so fully.
Stay fiery, Milou

Man Overboard by Kurt Egelhof reveals the stark contrast between passengers’ luxury and crew hardship on cruise ships. This debut novel, part of his From Stage to Page series, follows an entertainer of colour during and after apartheid who, unable to find work on land, becomes a cruise ship singer. Life on board, marked by power dynamics, economic disparity, and danger at sea, shocks him to his core. With raw honesty, it shines a light on human resilience and the unseen world, keeping the entertainment industry afloat.
Contrast and critique: The novel highlights the stark divide between the glamour that passengers see and the hardship that crew members endure.
Sociopolitical depth: In line with Egelhof’s other works, Man Overboard uses the cruise ship setting to explore themes of inequality and labour injustice.

The Adventure Boys is a powerful coming-of-age story set in the turbulent 1970s of South Africa, a time when cultural boundaries were being pushed in defiance of the racist status quo. The novel follows a group of teenage boys of colour, each carrying their dysfunctions and contradictions, as they navigate a society on the brink of transformation.
Forced to find common ground despite their differences, the boys embark on a journey that takes them to a mountain indifferent to human fragility, where they must either come together or face the ultimate cost.

We are not just running games — we are building futures. Every ticket bought is a contribution to something bigger: a more inclusive, hopeful, and empowered South Africa. The true winners of a responsibly operated National Lottery are people of this nation.”, said Charmaine Mabuza, CEO of ITHUBA.
As the only 100% black-owned and women-led operator in the Lottery’s history, ITHUBA continues to prove that excellence, integrity, and transformation can go hand in hand.
ITHUBA’s model proves that when the National Lottery is operated by capable, local hands, the benefits ripple through every level of society — from the winners and retailers to the communities supported by good causes.
