A powerful new documentary series revisits Hurricane Katrina, a catastrophic storm that devastated New Orleans and became one of the deadliest natural disasters in US history. Across three emotionally gripping episodes, survivors of Hurricane Katrina share their personal stories, reflecting on the horror of the storm 20 years ago, the strength of their community, and how they’ve rebuilt their lives and city. The series shines a spotlight on the systemic failures and negligence that left New Orleans defenceless against the hurricane’s fury, turning a natural disaster into a human-made catastrophe. Using first-person accounts, rare archival footage, and never-before-seen materials, the series captures the magnitude of the storm, the chaos that followed the breaking of the levees, and the botched recovery efforts that deepened the tragedy.

LIVING IN YOUR GLOBALLY REVERED FATHER’S MUSICAL SHADOW IS NEVER EASY, BUT JESSE CLEGG IS NOT JUST THE SON OF THE BELOVED “WHITE ZULU,” JOHNNY CLEGG; HE IS A COMPELLING MUSICIAN WHO’S CARVED OUT A DISTINCT IDENTITY OF HIS OWN.
BY BYRON LUKAS
In October 2024, Jesse Clegg performed on the hallowed Carnegie Hall stage, in New York, and got the Big Apple audience onto their feet by the end of the set. That performance alone proved (if it was even necessary) that he was a brilliant singer-songwriter in his own right, quite distinct from his famous dad.
A decade into his solo career, Jesse continues to capture audiences with complex and layered narratives that seem to echo his journey from “Johnny Clegg’s son” to being recognised and acknowledged as a serious musician on his own terms.
This is not to say that the “White Zulu” didn’t leave his indelible imprint on the young Jesse. “I was very lucky in that I got to travel the world with my father on tour, experiencing new cultures, languages, and art”, Jesse reflects.
This exposure expanded his perspective, and witnessing his father’s discipline and dedication to his music was particularly helpful to Jesse later on.
“He was a role model to me as a father and as an artist, teaching me stamina, commitment to an artistic vision, and how to stay hopeful and patient.”
While proud of his heritage, Jesse refused to rely on his father’s reputation. Instead, he has actively sought to forge his own distinct path in the industry.
“I became really focused on music in my early teens, when I started writing my own songs, “ he explains. It was through this lens that he came to understand music as a profound language for expressing his life and emotions, leading him to wholeheartedly embrace songwriting.
“I became obsessed with it and began working on
what became my first album.”
Throughout his formative years, Jesse immersed himself in the rich cultural history of South African music. “South Africa has a very rich musical landscape, and I’ve drawn on many styles and genres,” he says.
Afro-tech and Afro-house are favourites, and these, along with collabs with respected local musicians, enriched his songwriting, expanding his creative horizons.
Over the years, Jesse has released numerous singles and albums, each a testament to his evolution as an artist. His fusion of rock, pop, and traditional African rhythms allows him to transcend generational and cultural barriers and
connect with a diverse audience.
The industry can be ruthless, though, he admits, sometimes more so when you have a famous father in the biz. “A career in music is definitely not for the faint-hearted. There’s stress and pressure, but the joy of writing a great song, and the thrill of feeling the audience’s connection, are both hugely inspiring and motivating for me.”
Where would your ideal holiday destination be?
Japan has always been on my bucket list
Your dad was fluent in Zulu, are you too?
I understand a lot of Zulu but I’m not fluent
Your place of birth?
Johannesburg
Are you the resident performer at all family functions?
No, I leave that to my toddler!
If not a music artist, what other career path would you follow?
I got a BA Law degree at Wits so I guess I would have pursued something in academia or law. I’m very happy the music thing worked out, I’m not sure I could have worked in an office!
That was definitely the case at Carnegie Hall. Presented as part of a spotlight on the music of South Africa, the concert also featured singer and actress Zolani Mahola. “To bring my music to that space was a very meaningful milestone for me,” he reflects. “The show itself was so much fun, and by the end of the set the audience was on its feet.”
Jesse regards his songs as ‘a snapshot of my inner world’, an honest sharing of stuff swirling about in his brain, as well as perspectives he’s gained. But, he says, “I don’t think it’s useful to go into a songwriting session with any expectations”. Sometimes his songs emerge solely from playing around on the acoustic guitar or piano; others develop from studio sessions with software-based instruments. “You have to just wait and see what feelings emerge,” he says.
This year promises to be especially exciting for Jesse. “I have a lot of collaborative projects dropping this year, which I’m so excited about. I also have a number of epic shows coming up across SA which I can’t wait to announce. Stay tuned to my Instagram,” he tells us.
As he looks towards the future, Jesse is motivated by a desire to leave behind a legacy that extends beyond music. “I hope my legacy is first, as a good father to my daughter; and second, that I wrote songs that connected, moved, challenged, and inspired people in ways they didn’t expect.” IB

SOUTH AFRICA ISN’T JUST A COUNTRY; IT’S AN EXPERIENCE ETCHED INTO THE SOUL. THINK GOLDEN SUNSETS OVER WILD LANDSCAPES, COMFORTING HOME-COOKED MEALS, AND A SPIRIT OF RESILIENCE THAT NEVER QUITS. FROM SIDE-SPLITTING GROUP CHATS TO HEARTFELT MOMENTS OF UNITY, WE MIGHT JOKE ABOUT EMIGRATING, BUT WE KNOW THERE’S NOWHERE QUITE LIKE HOME.
In a world gripped by uncertainty, from political upheaval and climate chaos to the ever-rising cost of living (and yes, the dreaded frozen Zoom screen), there’s something oddly comforting about the chaos we know. Here in South Africa, even when the power cuts out (again), we find ways to laugh, light a fire, and keep the braais burning.
So, while the rest of the world spirals, the INBOUND SA team is proud to be South African. Because through all the madness, there’s a certain magic in our people, our culture, and our ability to thrive against the odds.
“I
“South Africa is a place of resilience, diversity and immense beauty. From the Drakensberg Mountains to our sweeping coastlines, there’s nothing quite like it. But it’s not just the views – it’s our spirit. The way we laugh through hardship, the way we come together, the way ubuntu flows through our veins. We’re stronger because of our differences, not despite them. This country isn’t perfect, but it’s home. And I’m proud to be part of its story.”
– Venecia Valentine, editor-in-chief
“NOWHERE
“I’ve travelled the world – tasted tacos in Tulum, wandered the alleys of Istanbul, sipped wine in the Valle de Guadalupe, but nothing compares to a potjie under Karoo stars or watching the Drakensberg light up at sunset with a glass of Pinotage in hand. South Africa doesn’t need bells and whistles – its authenticity is its luxury. Our markets, our creatives, our people… they all tell stories worth staying for.”
– Milou Staub, travel editor
“I WALKED IN WITH NO PLAN… AND FOUND A PURPOSE.”
“I arrived in SA with two bags, no job, no clue where I’d sleep that night. But I had faith. When I knocked on the INBOUND SA door, they opened it. And that changed everything. This country is far from easy, but if you’re bold enough to leap, it meets you with wild, unexpected grace.”
– Temo Mpodi, fashion & beauty editor
“WE
DON’T JUST PLAY SPORT – WE LIVE IT.”
South Africa stands as a proud sporting nation, boasting a rich legacy of excellence and unity through sports. From historic Rugby World Cup triumphs to outstanding cricket performances and Olympic successes, our nation consistently nurtures elite athletes, including Rayno Nel, recognised as the world’s strongest man. We represent more than just competitions and medals.
– Byron Lukas, sport, arts & culture editor
“WE DON’T WAIT AROUND. WE BUILD.”
“No matter the challenge, there’s always someone finding a clever way through, often with a side hustle in hand. We’re a country full of makers, dreamers, and doers who spot a gap and fill it — whether it’s selling something homemade at the robots or building a tech startup in a backroom. There’s a raw, relentless energy here — a ‘make a plan’ mindset that turns problems into possibilities.”
– Tarryn-Leigh Solomons, features editor
“IT’S
I love South Africa. I love being South African. It’s more than just a nationality, it’s a feeling, a rhythm, a sense of belonging that’s impossible to replicate. From the undeniable gees that fills stadiums, to the spirit of Ubuntu that reminds us we are all connected. Yes, we face challenges, but for me, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
– Kim Kay, sub-editor
“EVEN
“I once took the wrong MyCiti bus on my first day of work. The driver didn’t just explain where to go – he got off the bus to help. And the station manager rode with me to make sure I didn’t get lost again. Our country has its problems, mostly living remnants and consequences of systemic Apartheid. But it’s also a breathing, evolving thing that nevertheless holds firm to its founding principles when it comes to the real issues facing humanity today. I love my country, and our Continent, not because it’s all I know, but because I know what it can be, given half a chance.”
– Samiena Amien, sub-editor
“No matter what’s going on – load shedding, water issues, or yet another scandal – we find a way to laugh (and meme) through it. The humour, the humanity, the ‘shame, man’ in the face of disaster… it’s uniquely South African. We’re not just surviving; we’re thriving with a smile and a glass of local wine in hand.”
– Charis Torrance, health & wellness editor IB

BY VENECIA VALENTINE
In a moment of heartfelt reflection, we posed one simple yet profound question:
“If you could have lunch with Nelson Mandela, what would you tell him?”
MARLENE LE ROUX, CEO OF ARTSCAPE THEATRE IN CAPE TOWN:
“Tata, if only I had your kindness, vision and wisdom. THANK YOU for saying: “What counts in life is not that we have lived. It is the difference we make to other lives that determines the significance of ours.”
“This doctrine informs my life, my work at Artscape. A question: how do we effectively deal with GBV, with injustices perpetrated by bullies with power? How I wish I could invite you to Artscape to pick your brain and to see your proud, unique smile again.”
“I’d tell him we’re trying our best to walk in his giant footsteps, building jobs, spreading hope, and creating opportunities, one project at a time. I’d thank him for reminding us that leadership means love, laughter, and never giving up on South Africa’s potential. And yes, I’d ask for a selfie too!”
“I’d probably start by thanking him for the inspiration, the courage, and the blueprint for justice. A lot has happened since he left us. Some things have changed for the better. Others… let’s just say, we’re still on the journey. But your values, Madiba, remain our compass. And honestly? I’d ask you to stay for dessert. We could all use another helping of your wisdom - and maybe a story or two, just to remind us why we keep going.”
“Tata, stay indoors. Watch a movie. Don’t read the newspapers. Don’t watch the news. It’s not looking good out there, both here and overseas”.
“When I wrote my first book, Madiba did the foreword for my book, he always called me his favourite opposition politician, we were very close, he was like a father figure to me. If I had lunch with him today, I would ask him ‘Tata, what shall we do? because we have too few people tasting the fruits of our new democracy, so what shall we do to increase the number of people? I would love to hear his opinion.”
“How did you stay positive even in the darkest times? And what would you do to keep that sense of hope that we can still change things for the better?” IB

YOU HAVE TO SWAP INSTAGRAM FEEDS WITH ANOTHER INFLUENCER FOR A WEEK - WHO ARE YOU PICKING
Jesse Parenzee! I’m obsessed with her vibe, she’s effortlessly cool, super creative and always ahead of the trends.
WHAT’S ONE MYTH ABOUT BEING AN INFLUENCER/CONTENT CREATOR THAT YOU’RE TIRED OF HEARING?
One myth I’m so tired of is that influencing is “easy”, like we just snap a cute pic and call it a day. In reality, it’s a full-time job that requires serious time, creativity, and strategy.
WHAT TREND DO YOU PREDICT WILL DOMINATE INFLUENCER MARKETING IN THE 2ND HALF OF 2025?
Authenticity is 100% taking the lead. Especially in South Africa, I’ve noticed a shift away from perfectly curated, aesthetic-only content and a move towards creators sharing more raw, real parts of their lives.

YOU GET 24 HOURS WITH NO INTERNET, WHAT DO YOU DO?
I’d start the morning with a serene walk and some journaling. Given how fast-paced my work can be, I rarely get the chance to sit, reflect, and be still. I know I’d still end up making art in some form throughout the day, whether through writing poems, songs, or short stories.
YOU HAVE TO SWAP INSTAGRAM FEEDS WITH ANOTHER INFLUENCER FOR A WEEK - WHO ARE YOU PICKING
I’d choose Nadia Jaftha. Her brand is incredibly true to who she is – it’s authentic, bold, and unfiltered in a way that resonates deeply with me.
WHAT’S ONE MYTH ABOUT BEING AN INFLUENCER/CONTENT CREATOR THAT YOU’RE TIRED OF HEARING?
One myth I’m honestly exhausted by is the idea that being an influencer is “easy” – that it’s all about taking pretty pictures and posting them online.
WHAT TREND DO YOU PREDICT WILL DOMINATE INFLUENCER MARKETING IN THE 2ND HALF OF 2025?
I think we’re going to see a shift toward more community-based events, particularly ones that welcome smaller creators into the fold.

YOU HAVE TO SWAP INSTAGRAM FEEDS WITH ANOTHER INFLUENCER FOR A WEEK - WHO ARE YOU PICKING
I’d change feeds with Grace Mondlana! Her feed is top tier, and if I were to be an aesthetic girl, I’d use her as inspiration
WHAT’S ONE MYTH ABOUT BEING AN INFLUENCER/CONTENT CREATOR THAT YOU’RE TIRED OF HEARING?
A lot of people are under the impression that you need a lot of followers to be an influencer. NO, YOU DO NOT! Anything from 1000-10k followers is enough to work with brands!
WHAT TREND DO YOU PREDICT WILL DOMINATE INFLUENCER MARKETING IN THE 2ND HALF OF 2025?
AI is setting trends; it’s creating editing features for content creators and allowing us to produce very different types of content. A good example of this is using AI to make Bigfoot vlogs, etc.

‘It’s not a real job’. Content creation and being consistent are a real job. There is so much work that goes behind it; often, people hustle for years before landing their break.”
WHAT TREND DO YOU PREDICT WILL DOMINATE INFLUENCER MARKETING IN THE 2ND HALF OF 2025?
The narration trend is my favourite because it leans a lot more towards authenticity and getting to know the person behind the profile in a fun way.

Johannesburg’s Theatre of Marcellus at Emperor’s Palace is set to buzz with laughter this July as the much-anticipated ‘Jokers in July’ comedy festival returns. Inbound SA caught up with comedy legend Joey Rasdien, who takes the stage on 19 July. We asked Joey…
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR COMEDY CAREER?
“It was about more than 25 years ago, when I was dating my late wife, we used to go to shows and the theatre often. One of the first plays I watched was Joe Barber. Another one of our dates was the International Comedy Festival at the Civic Theatre.
At the time, my wife was trying to get us into AMWAY, and they used to have these conferences with international speakers (who held the audience captive, much like a comedian would) and so it came to be that she suggested me signing up to an agency and it is there that I got my first role in the very first Cell C campaign.
On one of the shoots, I met Bevan Cullinan, and he suggested I try stand-up.
WHAT WAS YOUR COMEDY BREAKTHROUGH?
“I met Kagiso Lediga and David Kau at one of the shoots for Phat Joe. I was in one of the opening sequences for the Phat Joe Show, and it spiralled into us doing the Pure Monate Show - and that was my big break because shortly after, I got selected to perform at the International Comedy Festival in Durban.
I did the movie, Dollars and White Pipes and that was another breakthrough for me... and went on to make more movies like Bunny Chow.”
IF NOT A COMEDIAN, WHAT OTHER CAREER PATH WOULD YOU FOLLOW?
I’d probably be working for a financial institution, insurer. I don’t know what my career path would’ve been, but I think everything happens for a reason, and here we are.”
“By commenting on the world around us and speaking about the life experiences that I’ve experienced in that certain part of my life. So, it’s always going to be different; the world around us is constantly changing. And if you speak about the constant change, you are automatically going to keep the comedy sets fresh. ”
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE COMIC LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY?
“Internationally it’s Dave Chappelle. He speaks about things that I wish I could speak about and not get cancelled. His outlook on life and things in general.
In South Africa, it’s hard to say, they are all my friends and I like to watch certain comedians like Loyiso Gola and of course, Kagiso Lediga.
I can’t say I have a favourite comedian in South Africa. But if I must be honest, I’d go with Marc Lottering.”
WHAT DOES YOUR FAMILY THINK ABOUT YOUR JOKES?
“My son never thought I was funny. My daughter thinks I’m funny, but she thinks she is funnier than I am. My sisters and brothers are impartial; they just see it as comedy. I think they don’t even fully grasp that I’m a comedian.”
THE BIGGEST ‘WOW’ MOMENT OF YOUR COMEDY CAREER WAS…
“When I got a standing ovation in London at the Queen Elizabeth Centre. That was a ‘wow’ moment, here’s this guy getting a standing ovation in a foreign country. IB

THIRTEEN YEARS AFTER CHARMING SOUTH AFRICAN AUDIENCES WITH THE BELOVED ROM-COM SEMI-SOET, ANEL ALEXANDER AND NICO PANAGIO RETURN TO THE SCREEN, THIS TIME WITH A SEQUEL THAT DARES TO ASK: WHAT REALLY HAPPENS AFTER “HAPPILY EVER AFTER”?
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
I’m showing my age when I say I remember watching Semi-Soet in the cinema on a first date, and though the guy didn’t last, the Afrikaans rom-com stayed with me.
Who could forget the classic set-up: a driven businesswoman hires a fake fiancé to seal the deal… and ends up falling in love for real? The film was a local hit, earning SAFTA nominations and a global revival when it started showing on Netflix in 2022.
Now, 13 years later, Anel Alexander and Nico Panagio return as Jaci and JP in Semi-Soeter (“even sweeter”), premiering on 20 June.
Directed by Joshua Rous and co-written by Anel and long-time collaborator Sandra Vaughn, the sequel sees the couple navigate marriage, parenthood pressure, and an all-too-familiar competitive threat – JP’s school rival, Joubert, played by Neels van Jaarsveld.
We caught up with Anel to chat about love that grows up, navigating grief, finding humour in the hard stuff, and why the idea of “having it all” is just a myth.
I definitely wore many hats! I’d like to believe it made the work stronger. Just like the first film, we wrote Semi-Soeter with the cast in mind – we know each other well, so we write to our strengths. As a producer, I’ve learned how essential it is to have a solid team around me. When I’m acting, I need to focus, but behind the scenes, I’m often the one sorting out broken cameras or signing payments between takes! That said, being both writer and producer means Sandra and I could tweak things quickly. If it rained on the picnic scene day, we could rewrite it for indoors. The roles overlapped in helpful ways.
If you’d asked me a few years ago, I would’ve said “Never!” You don’t usually make rom-com sequels. But the industry was going through a tough time, and we thought, “Let’s do something fun that also creates jobs.” Of course, it ended up being a six-year journey: Covid, actor schedules, and I lost my husband and producing partner to cancer
during that time. The script went through so many versions, at one point it was even a Christmas movie! But we held onto the heart of it, and I think it’s all the richer now. The first scene of the film is the only one that made it through every draft. That should tell you something.
LOVE THE
“LOVE GROWS UP.” HOW DID YOU APPROACH TELLING A MORE MATURE LOVE STORY?
We’ve grown, and so have the characters. And so has the audience. We wanted that reflected in the film. Initially, we tried avoiding babies, kids, and animals as they are hard to shoot. But we kept coming back to the idea that this story had to centre on family. We asked: what happens when you’re years into marriage, and you’re still not sure about kids? What if you don’t agree? And is work–
Zoom and FaceTime calls at all hours, often in our pyjamas. But we’ve got such a shorthand by now. The world of Semi-Soet has its own rhythm: fast, funny, a little quirky. We understand it intuitively, and we tried to preserve that while deepening the themes.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE AUDIENCES TAKE AWAY FROM JACI AND JP’S STORY THIS TIME?
life balance even a real thing? These are questions people are asking every day.
Very. There’s this idea that we can “have it all” –dream job, dream partner, dream family. But it’s a lie. Everything comes at a cost. In the script, we didn’t want to give pat answers. We just wanted to explore those tensions honestly. I think that’s what makes the film relatable—it’s not about perfection, it’s about navigating the mess.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH YOUR LONGTIME COLLABORATOR SANDRA VAUGHN AGAIN?
Sandra always says we’re like weird Siamese twins! We wrote Semi-Soeter across continents and time zones: me in LA, her in SA. We had
That people matter more than achievements. This film is about love, yes, but also about choices. Should we have children? Could we? And if we do, who do we become? After losing my husband, I know firsthand that you don’t take your titles or your house with you. What you leave behind is love. And hopefully this film reminds people of that.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SEE SEMISOET ON NETFLIX AND SHARE THESE STORIES GLOBALLY?
It’s surreal. Semi-Soet was the first Afrikaans film made in partnership with Netflix, which is huge. South Africa has world-class stories, actors, and crews. The big barrier has always been funding and distribution. Now, with platforms like Netflix, our films can travel. I’m excited for more local stories to get that spotlight. And I still have so many more to tell. IB
FORMER CHEETAHS RUGBY PLAYER RAYNO NEL SHARES HIS JOURNEY FROM THE PITCH TO THE PODIUM, PROVING THAT IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO CHASE GREATNESS.
BY BYRON LUKAS
In the world of strength sports, few journeys are as remarkable and as inspirational as that of Rayno Nel.
The former Free State Cheetahs rugby player has transformed himself into a global powerhouse, recently claiming the prestigious title of 2025 World’s Strongest Man.
But for Nel, it’s not just about the title, it’s about purpose, passion, and pride in representing South Africa on the world stage.
After stepping away from professional rugby in 2019, Nel found himself yearning for the competitive rush that sport had always provided.
“I stopped playing rugby, worked for a couple of years, and just missed being in a competitive environment,” he shares. “Then, like a light bulb moment, strongman came to mind. I discussed it with my family, and they immediately supported me. It was the best decision.”
That decision would alter the course of his life.
Balancing a full-time job with an elite-level training schedule was no easy feat. Yet Nel made it work through sheer discipline.
“I would wake up early like everyone else, work from nine to five, and then train from six to nine every evening. Saturdays were almost entirely dedicated to training.”
The first thing I said when I got back to SA was that we need to use this opportunity to grow the sport.
This unrelenting routine not only honed his physical strength but also built the mental stamina required to compete at the sport’s highest level.
Nel’s mission goes far beyond personal accolades. He’s driven by the dream of uplifting the sport of strongman in South Africa and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Nel’s dedication paid off when he was crowned World’s Strongest Man in 2025, a career-defining moment that marked years of perseverance and sacrifice.
“I was ill just three weeks before the competition and couldn’t train. Things never go exactly to plan. But I’ve grown so much in strength, and I’m truly blessed physically. The real challenge was mental.”
Despite setbacks, Nel powered through, turning obstacles into stepping stones. His win wasn’t just personal, it was symbolic.
“It’s truly an honour for me to help South Africa shine on the world stage in any way.”
Central to Nel’s success is the unwavering support of his family, who have been with him every step of the way.
“Honestly, I attribute the majority of my success to the people around me. My wife, my family, my in-laws, everyone has been incredibly supportive. My coach is amazing too. It’s really special.”
Whether travelling the globe for competitions or offering emotional support at home, their belief in him never wavered.
“If I can offer any advice, it’s this: if you have a dream, work hard. I only discovered strongman at 27, and within a few years, I was competing on the world stage.”
His story is a testament to the power of determination and late-blooming success.
Looking ahead, Nel sees huge untapped potential in South Africa’s strength sports community.
“I truly believe South Africa has what it takes to be a global force in strongman. We just need the support, the infrastructure, and belief.”
As he continues to break barriers on the international stage, Rayno Nel remains committed to his vision: lifting not just weights, but an entire nation’s aspirations. IB

The UEFA Women’s Euro Championship is in full swing, and all eyes are on Alexia Putellas. The Barcelona midfielder is not only donning the national jersey with pride; she’s pursuing a legacy. Putellas made history by becoming the first player to win the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year and secured back-to-back Ballon d’Or Féminin titles. But Spain’s supporters have one question: Could this finally be the year La Roja takes home the title?
Aiden Markram stands at the forefront of the Proteas’ ambitions. Markram is a vital force in the Proteas’ batting line-up, contributing both stability and flair to the crease. With an impressive track record, he has established himself as one of South African cricket’s most dependable talents. His ability to build innings under pressure, combined with a strategic mind, positions him as a key figure as the team prepares to face a challenging series of fixtures.
ll eyes are on the Springboks as they gear up for a defining run of international fixtures. Among the key players leading the charge is loose forward Kwagga Smith. A crucial member of the infamous “Bomb Squad”, Smith’s high-energy performances and relentless work rate have consistently turned the tide in high-stakes matches. With only a handful of games remaining on the rugby calendar this year, his explosive presence could be the Springboks’ secret.
Sprinting star Akani Simbine will carry South Africa’s hopes as the countdown to the 2025 World Athletics Championship begins. Renowned for his lightning-fast 100m performances and calm under pressure, Simbine has firmly established himself as one of the world’s premier sprinters. As the championship draws near, Simbine’s dedication and speed will be key to South Africa’s medal hopes.
All eyes are on Kaylene Corbett as she prepares to make waves in the 200m breaststroke at the upcoming 2025 World Aquatics Championships. A rising star in South African swimming, Corbett is quickly building a reputation as one of the nation’s most promising talents, and her momentum shows no signs of slowing.
As the golfing world turns its attention to the upcoming US Open, Rory McIlroy stands on the cusp of potential redemption. McIlroy, who last lifted the coveted trophy in 2011, has since delivered numerous close calls. Now, over a decade later, McIlroy enters the championship with renewed determination and the weight of expectation resting heavily on his shoulders.

NESTLED IN THE FOOTHILLS OF STELLENBOSCH, THE DYLAN LEWIS SCULPTURE GARDEN IS WHERE WILD NATURE MEETS SOULFUL ART. WITH OVER 60 STRIKING SCULPTURES SET AMONG INDIGENOUS FYNBOS, THIS SERENE ESCAPE INVITES VISITORS TO EXPLORE THE UNTAMED BEAUTY OF THE LANDSCAPE AND THE WILDERNESS WITHIN THEMSELVES.
Tucked away in the picturesque town of Stellenbosch, where elegant wine estates give way to rugged mountain terrain, the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden offers a powerful experience of art, nature, and self-discovery.
More than just a garden, this serene space unfolds as a living, breathing gallery, set against the backdrop of the majestic Helderberg Mountains, where leopards still roam.
Spanning over 4 kilometres of landscaped pathways, the garden showcases more than 60 sculptures by renowned South African artist Dylan Lewis.
These bronze works, ranging from fragmented human forms to evocative wild creatures, trace Lewis’s lifelong exploration of the Jungian concept of “the wilderness within”, revealing the deep emotional and spiritual dialogue between humans and the natural world.
The garden’s origin story is as compelling as the artwork it holds. In 2009, Lewis began shaping the flat farmland into undulating hills, quiet valleys, and reflective water features, not with garden tools, but with an excavator. What began as a simple idea to create a play area for his children evolved into what Lewis now calls his largest sculpture to date.
“When I saw the potential of what that machine could do, it gripped me,” Lewis shares on his website.
Over nearly two years, he used earth-moving machinery the way others might use a chisel, sculpting a landscape that invites stillness, movement, and contemplation. The result is not a traditional garden, but one that blends design with wildness, honouring the natural flow of the terrain and embracing the unpredictable beauty of the wild.
Unlike conventional Western Garden layouts, the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden follows no strict plan. Instead, sculptures are arranged intuitively, guided by emotion and the landscape itself. The design draws from the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, the appreciation of imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity.
Surrounding the art is a thoughtful planting scheme that focuses heavily on indigenous South African flora, particularly fynbos. Under the guidance of indigenous plant consultant Fiona Powrie, the garden flourishes year-round, with peak blooming between July and September when buchus and ericas create a spectacular display of colour and scent.
One highlight is the striking ‘Heather Hill’, which features a curated collection of rare ericas sourced from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, a testament to the garden’s ecological commitment and visual beauty.
For Dylan Lewis, sculpture is more than an artistic pursuit, it’s a deeply emotional and spiritual process rooted in his personal history. Raised in a religiously conservative family, Lewis found in nature a space to connect with his authentic, untamed self.
“Nature has come to symbolise a place where I connect with my true inner wilderness,” he reflects.
This sense of raw honesty pulses through his sculptures, which often sit poised between strength and vulnerability. The garden invites visitors to explore themes of identity, transformation, and balance, encouraging a return to the wildness that lives within all of us.
“The challenge,” Lewis explains, “is to embrace the paradox between tameness and wildness— the balance that ultimately shapes our understanding of self.”
Whether you’re an art lover, nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a place for quiet reflection, the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden offers a transformative experience. IB
On 14 July 1989, renowned Sixties Welsh singer Tom Jones, known for classic hits such as “Delilah”, “The Green Green Grass Of Home”, and “Only Once”, lost a paternity suit brought against him by Katherine Berkery, a 27-year-old New Yorker. He was 49 at the time. Of course, it’s not unusual (haha) in celeb circles, but the court ruling underscored the complexities of celebrity paternity cases and is still used as a legal precedent when it comes to paternity, child support, and the legal rights and responsibilities of celeb fathers. Fame and notoriety… a double-sided coin.
In July 2017, 41-year-old Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington tragically committed suicide. Bennington left an indelible mark on metal rock and its countless fans around the globe. According to Rolling Stone magazine, he had always been open about his struggles with addiction and depression, but those close to him were shocked by his suicide. Shortly before taking his own life, Bennington had tweeted that he was “feeling very creative” and had written six new songs. Around the same time, says Rolling Stone, he’d told a friend, Rene Mata: “We have to stick together, and we have so much to live for.” His death shocked the rock fraternity but also ignited conversations about mental health, a subject that had shaped much of his artistic expression.
On 27 July 2002, the music industry was rocked by the news that Mariah Carey had checked herself into an undisclosed hospital, citing “extreme exhaustion.” This revelation came as the R&B star, known for her soaring vocals, was set to make a highly anticipated appearance at MTV’s 20th birthday party. In a sudden move, Carey had cancelled all public engagements, raising concerns among fans and industry peers alike. As she continues to work on her mental health and music, her journey offers hope to many, reinforcing the importance of self-care and the courage it takes to seek help.

BY TEMO MPODI
What better way to wrap up the first half of the year than with a little skin indulgence, courtesy of CHANEL? I’ve always had a soft spot for the brand. It’s not just about the name or the unmistakable touch of luxury, it’s about the bold, visionary woman behind it all.
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was fierce, unapologetic, and effortlessly elegant. Add to that the timeless monochrome palette—black and white—the very colours that dominate both my wardrobe and beauty drawer.
So there I was, stepping into the CHANEL Boutique for their Exclusive Brightening and Detox Treatment. I was warmly welcomed by Candice, one of CHANEL’s skincare therapists, a gentle, kind presence with a bright, shy smile that immediately made me feel at ease. After a brief
consultation, she led me into the serene beauty room where the magic began.
What followed was a 1-hour and 30-minute facial that felt more like ten. That’s the thing about bliss: time tends to vanish when you’re completely present and enjoying every moment.
The treatment began with a refining AHA scrub, targeting what CHANEL refers to as the ‘youth triangle’—that coveted zone from the cheeks to the tip of the chin. Designed to restore volume and vibrancy, it certainly lived up to the promise. This was followed by lymphatic drainage and facial reflexology, both aimed at eliminating toxins and boosting circulation. A cooling massage was next, sculpting and toning the contours of my face, finished off with two cooling glass balls that left my skin feeling firmer, lifted, and utterly refreshed.
According to CHANEL’s expert therapists, the treatment is designed to leave the complexion visibly brighter, smoother, and more even-toned, with a lifted and sculpted appearance. And let me tell you, it delivered. I didn’t feel the need to reach for foundation the next day... or the day after... or for the rest of the week. Possibly even the month. It wasn’t just skincare; it was skin revival.
A luxurious ritual that not only refreshed my complexion but also reminded me that confidence doesn’t come from makeup, it comes from within.
As I sat up, still floating somewhere between heaven and earth, I turned to Candice and whispered, “You took me to heaven.” She smiled and replied with effortless grace: “I’m glad I could take you to heaven, whilst you’re still on earth.” IB

CHARGED WITH CONTINUING THE LEGACY OF A GREAT LUXURY BRAND, CAROLYN BOYES BOLDLY STEPPED IN TO FILL THE SHOES OF HER FAMOUS AUNT, CARROL – FULLY UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY AND, CRUCIALLY, ARMED WITH A PLAN. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HER TO DISCOVER JUST WHAT THOSE PLANS ARE, AND ALL THE DOPE ABOUT THEIR FABULOUS NEW BAG COLLECTION.
BY TEMO MPODI
HOW DID THE IDEA OF THIS BAG COLLECTION COME ABOUT?
In 2019 my aunt, Carrol and I started talking about reviving fashion accessories within the brand. At the time I was still at university, so I didn’t dive into it immediately. It wasn’t until I joined the business that I began developing the range. I wanted to bring something fresh and distinctive to the South African market.
START, FRESH WORK... DOES EACH DESIGN HAVE ITS OWN LITTLE STORY UNRAVELLING TO CAPTURE THE BUYER?
Absolutely. Each design has its own story. The Pulse range showcases an iconic Carrol Boyes figure, which has been part of the brand’s identity since the beginning. The Lacuna range is inspired by an empty space or gap. It is a design we discovered on Carrol’s iPad about a year ago. Then there’s the Spekboom pattern, as well as the Swell pattern.
IT’S EVIDENT THAT THIS COLLECTION EXUDES LUXURY AND PRESTIGE. PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT. Carrol Boyes is known for creating pieces that are works of art. This bag collection is no exception. During my master’s degree in luxury business, I learnt how closely art and luxury are connected. That connection is something the Carrol Boyes brand has always embraced to create items that feel genuinely special.
TALKING OF SPECIALITY, WHAT IS THE FASHION LOOK THAT BEST SUITS THE BAGS?
I love wearing them with neutral outfits, where they really stand out. They are versatile enough to work with bold colours too. Personally, I think they add a sophisticated touch to any look.
WHAT DOES THIS ARTISTIC LEGACY MEAN TO YOU AND THE WHOLE FAMILY?
Artistic legacy is at the heart of everything we do. My aunt built this brand on the concept of “functional art,” and it is a philosophy I am passionate about continuing. This means creating pieces that are not only beautiful, but practical, too. It is a family legacy we all take pride in, and I am honoured to be part of its evolution.
DO YOU SEE YOURSELF BROADENING AND CARVING OUT YOUR OWN FULL BRAND?
At this stage, I’m not entirely sure. Right now I’m focused on exploring and growing within the Carrol Boyes brand, but I’m open to seeing where this journey takes me.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE BAG FROM THE COLLECTION?
The Lacuna large tote. It’s slouchy and relaxed while still having enough structure to hold everything I need. It’s the perfect everyday bag.
WE ALL NEED A STYLISH ‘EVERYDAY BAG’. LASTLY, WHAT’S FUN ABOUT THIS BUSINESS?
What I love most about this business is that no two days are the same. I’ve had the chance to be involved in different areas of the brand, which means I’m always learning something new and getting to create things that excite me. IB
THERE’S SOMETHING TRULY MAGICAL ABOUT WINTER – COSY CHUNKY KNITS, CRACKLING FIRES, AND A GLASS OF RICH RED WINE IN HAND. BUT WHILE THE SEASON HAS ITS CHARMS, YOUR SKIN OFTEN TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY. SO, HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR SKIN AND MAINTAIN THAT HEALTHY GLOW ALL WINTER LONG? HERE ARE SOME SKINCARE TIPS BY HANNON TO KEEP YOUR SKIN PLUMP, HYDRATED, AND BEAUTIFULLY BALANCED, NO MATTER HOW LOW THE TEMPERATURE DROPS.
BY TEMO MPODI
1. MOISTURISE IMMEDIATELY AFTER BATHING
Seal in Moisture: Apply a rich nourishing moisturiser like the HANNON’S Intense Hydrating Moisturiser immediately after showering, while your skin is still damp.
Hydrating Ingredients: Look for products that contain shea butter, glycerine, or hyaluronic acid to provide deep, lasting hydration.
Shower Care: Avoid scalding showers, as they strip the skin of essential oils. Moisturising after showers and shaving prevents moisture loss and keeps skin soft and protected.
Eye care: Don’t forget the delicate area around your eyes. This is what people notice first.
WHILE YOU SLEEP

FROM DANCE FLOORS TO GLOBAL FASHION STAGES, TSHOLO DIKOBE’S JOURNEY IS AS DYNAMIC AS HER STYLE. NOW BASED IN NEW YORK, SHE’S AMPLIFYING AFRICAN FASHION NARRATIVES THROUGH SUSTAINABLE DESIGN, CULTURAL DIRECTION, AND TREND FORECASTING. DISCOVER HOW THIS VISIONARY CREATIVE IS SHAPING FASHION’S FUTURE, ONE TIMELESS PIECE AT A TIME.
BY TEMO MPODI
For multifaceted fashion maven Tsholo Dikobe, styling, cultural creative direction, and trend forecasting aren’t just skills; they’re second nature. We caught up with Tsholo to figure out where her remarkable fashion journey began.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FASHION JOURNEY. WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?
My fashion journey wasn’t something I planned. It all started with my passion for dancing alongside a few friends. We wanted to look our best on stage, so I naturally took on the role of selecting and styling our outfits for prestigious performances. That’s where my love for fashion was truly born. Since then, I’ve grown into a multi-award-winning fashion artist, specialising in styling, cultural creative direction and forecasting — blending creativity with culture every step of the way.
WHERE ARE YOU NOW IN THAT JOURNEY?
Right now, I’m immersed in the creative and cultural landscapes of the global north, particularly in New York, where I’m building global connections and expanding the reach of African fashion narratives.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SUSTAINABLE FASHION?
As I transitioned from dancing to my fashion career, I developed a deep love for transforming clothes into eclectic, individualistic pieces. Thrifting, selling vintage finds, and reinventing my pre-loved wardrobe have always brought me joy and remain central to my approach today. For me, sustainable fashion isn’t just about style; it’s about giving garments a new lease of life. Fashion doesn’t have to be brand new to be powerful.
Creating modular garments, versatile pieces designed to be worn in multiple ways, is a key principle of sustainable fashion. Equally important is ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions for artisans, and full transparency throughout the supply chain. Every designer should embrace the mindset that waste is simply a resource in the wrong place, transforming it into an opportunity rather than discarding it.
I draw inspiration informally from a wide range of artists, cultural movements and designers whose work I study closely. For me, mentorship takes many forms — whether through conversation, observation or shared creative experiences. Recently, I had the incredible privilege of meeting iconic stylist June Ambrose and the legendary two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter here in New York. Their work has profoundly influenced how I view fashion, not just as style, but as a powerful tool for identity, purpose and meaningful change.
Absolutely — it truly was inspiring. Over the years, I’ve mentored emerging creatives, shared insights across social media platforms, and supported designers in discovering their visual and brand identity. For me, mentorship is a twoway exchange: it’s about offering what I’ve learned while remaining open to growth, collaboration, and inspiration from the next generation of fashion talent.
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with designers and creatives on a range of styling projects, brand storytelling initiatives, and visual concept development across fashion campaigns, editorials, and cultural exhibitions. My work in creative direction, styling and trend forecasting allows me to support designers in shaping and refining a distinctive brand identity.
WHICH TREND ARE YOU LOVING THAT DEFIES THE PASSING OF TIME?
A crisp white shirt and a blazer — always timeless. From wartime uniforms to modern power dressing, they’ve stood the test of time.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING IN THE FASHION WORLD RIGHT NOW?
Fashion AI is transforming the industry. From optimised design processes to predictive trend forecasting, we’re seeing a new wave of innovation. Brands are becoming more relatable, creative directors are stepping into the spotlight, and people are embracing self-expression more freely than ever before. It’s an exciting time where technology and creativity collide.
EXPRESSION TRULY MATTERS IN THE FASHION WORLD. WHO IS YOUR ULTIMATE FASHION ICON?
I have a few. Manthe Ribane’s interpretation of individuality and visual storytelling is unlike anything else. Then there’s Tracee Ellis Ross — her style is quirky, carefree, and deeply expressive. She is, after all, the daughter of the fashion queen herself, Diana Ross.
TREND OF FAD?
Timelessness. It’s always in style. IB

WHEN THE DAYS GET SHORTER AND THE NIGHTS GET LONGER (AND YOUR DUVET BECOMES YOUR BEST FRIEND), WINTER SERVES UP THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO PRIORITISE SOME PROPER SHUT-EYE.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
“We often underestimate the importance of sleep,” says Cayley Alberts, occupational therapist and Centre of Psychotherapy Excellence (COPE) manager at Netcare Akeso George. “It’s a basic human need. When we don’t get enough of it, our mood, energy levels and ability to function all take a knock.”
And if you needed yet another reason to ditch your 3 am doom-scrolling habit, here it is: Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to everything from a weakened immune system to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Not exactly a dream scenario.
So, why is winter the perfect time to take your sleep habits seriously? For starters, the
cooler weather works in your favour. “Cooler temperatures help the body to cool down, which may help you fall asleep,” explains Alberts. But don’t turn your bedroom into an igloo, aim for cool yet cosy. If the air feels dry, a humidifier can help; after all, no one sleeps soundly when they’re coughing all night.
On the flip side, winter’s shorter daylight hours can wreak havoc on your circadian rhythm, suppressing melatonin production, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. As sleep expert Alberts explains, “This can make waking up harder and falling asleep at night more of a challenge.”
Want better sleep? Build a bedtime routine. “A warm bath or shower before bed can help improve sleep quality,” says Alberts. Other winter sleep tips include:
• Limiting screen time (or using blue light filters)
• Watching your caffeine and alcohol intake
• Eating lighter meals at night
• Exercising earlier in the day rather than close to bedtime
Sleep habits that stick all year round “Establishing healthy sleep habits now, like regular exercise, good sleep hygiene, and managing stress, will serve you well in every season,” says Alberts.
So snuggle up, power down, and let winter be your sleep-training season. Your future, wellrested self will thank you. IB
DRY SKIN, STRESS, AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS? STEP INTO THE STEAMY WORLD OF SAUNAS AND SPAS, WHERE DETOX, DEEP REST, AND GLOWING SKIN GO HAND-IN-HAND. DISCOVER HOW THERMAL THERAPY IS REDEFINING BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT THIS WINTER.
BY TEMO MPODI
As temperatures drop and the air turns dry, our skin often pays the price. But winter doesn’t have to mean dull skin and seasonal stress. This chilly season is the perfect time to indulge in one of the most rejuvenating wellness rituals: thermal therapy.
From tranquil spas to wood-fired mobile saunas, heat-based treatments are once again taking centre stage as winter’s most luxurious and bestkept beauty secret.
HOW DO SAUNAS ENHANCE BEAUTY?
According to Vanessa Yelseth, owner and managing director of Hot Huts Mobile Saunas, regular sauna use isn’t just a luxury; it’s a natural way to support your skin.
“Saunas enhance beauty primarily by improving skin health,” Vanessa explains. “The heat induces sweating, which helps open the pores and flush out toxins, dirt, and impurities. This deep cleanse can lead to clearer, smoother, and more radiant skin.”
The benefits go beyond surface-level glow. Steam therapy works on a cellular level, boosting circulation, nourishing skin cells, and supporting natural detox processes. It’s a gentle, holistic treatment that leaves body and mind feeling recharged.
Hot Huts also offers a luxurious twist: a sauna honey imported from Finland. “Applied during the session, this sauna honey reduces inflammation, promotes the healing of wounds and abrasions, and enhances skin purification and moisturisation,” Vanessa shares.
HOW DOES DETOXIFICATION WORK WHEN HAVING A SAUNA?
When it comes to saunas, the idea of “sweating out toxins” might sound like folklore, but it’s not actually that far-fetched. The detoxifying effects of sauna therapy are quite literal, and the benefits for your skin and overall health are significant.
3 BEAUTY PROS OF USING A SAUNA BY HOT
1. Improved skin health
Saunas boost your complexion by promoting deep sweating, which opens pores and flushes out impurities, reducing acne and breakouts for clearer, more radiant skin. Plus, increased blood circulation brings oxygen and nutrients, enhancing skin vitality.
2. Enhanced Skin Elasticity
Sauna sessions can boost collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles for smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
3. Reduced Puffiness and Inflammation
Sauna therapy can calm puffy, sensitive skin by stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage, reducing fluid retention and inflammation.
Now that you’ve arrived, make sure your itinerary includes a stop at our authentic Finnish sauna. A first for South Africa, you’ll find us at various iconic locations around the coastline.
Detoxification, as part of the sauna experience, works by encouraging the body to sweat intensely. “The heat exposure causes the body to sweat profusely,” explains Vanessa. “Sweat helps eliminate toxins such as heavy metals, chemicals, and other impurities stored in fat cells.”
This natural cleansing process does more than cool the body down. It actively helps to unclog pores, reduce the presence of bacteria on the skin, and lower the overall toxic load. The result? Healthier, clearer skin and a system that feels lighter and more balanced.
Beauty goes beyond skin deep, reflecting overall wellbeing. Sleep is a key, often overlooked beauty treatment. Lack of rest can cause dull skin, puffy eyes, and visible fatigue that even the best concealer can’t hide.
“The calming environment of a sauna relaxes the body, lowers cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and promotes mental clarity, ultimately leading to better sleep and mood,” says Graeme Jardine, CEO of GR Spa & Pool. “Many clients report improved sleep quality and emotional balance after regular sauna sessions.”
Jardine emphasises that wellness is at the core of
his spa and sauna business: “Understanding that every person’s needs are unique, we custom-build each spa and sauna to fit the individual. A sauna is considered a health haven because of its wide range of physical and mental wellness benefits.”
While saunas work wonders for detoxification and sleep, spas are their equally powerful cousins in the pursuit of radiant skin. Spas provide targeted skincare and body treatments, like facials, massages, and exfoliation therapies, that help reduce inflammation, nourish the skin, and foster deep relaxation.
Spas and saunas are no longer seen as luxury extras; they’re essential tools in a modern selfcare toolkit. These steamy sanctuaries support everything from mental health to glowing skin. Because let’s face it, beauty begins the moment we choose to look after ourselves. IB

Soaking in a jacuzzi reduces stress and supports emotional well-being by relaxing tense muscles and calming the nervous system.
2. Eases Muscle & Joint Pain
Hydrotherapy relieves pain and inflammation, improves flexibility, and alleviates joint pressure, helping with arthritis, injuries, and everyday strain.
3. Boosts Circulation & Supports Heart Health
Regular jacuzzi use can improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and support heart health.

FEELING RUN-DOWN, CONSTANTLY TIRED, OR JUST NOT QUITE YOURSELF? IT COULD BE MORE THAN STRESS OR A HECTIC SCHEDULE. OFTEN, YOUR BODY GIVES SUBTLE SIGNALS THAT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM ISN’T FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS. FROM FREQUENT COLDS TO LINGERING FATIGUE, HERE ARE SEVEN OVERLOOKED SIGNS THAT YOUR IMMUNITY MIGHT NEED A LITTLE EXTRA SUPPORT.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
If you’re constantly catching colds or feel like you’re always the one sniffling in the office, your immune system might be waving a white flag.
According to Dr. Simangele Nkosi, practising GP and trustee of CompCare Medical Scheme, “There are some less obvious signs that your immune system isn’t firing on all cylinders, and recognising these early can help you stay one step ahead of illness.”
HERE ARE SEVEN SNEAKY SIGNS YOUR IMMUNITY MIGHT BE LOW, BEYOND JUST FREQUENT ILLNESS:
1. Persistent fatigue: “Feeling wiped out no matter how much beauty sleep you get is a classic red flag,” says Dr Nkosi.
2. Poor wound healing: Cuts and scrapes that hang around longer than usual could mean your body’s repair crew is running low on supplies.
3. Easy bruising or bleeding: Spotting bruises or bleeding gums out of the blue? Your immune system could be struggling to keep things in check.
4. Delayed recovery from illnesses: If your sniffles or flu are sticking around like an unwelcome guest, it’s worth paying attention.
5. Irregular sleeping patterns: “Your immune health and sleep quality are best mates,” Dr Nkosi explains. When one’s off, the other often follows.
6. Drastic changes in body weight: Unexplained weight loss (or gain) can sometimes indicate immune challenges.
7. Digestive problems: Issues like bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or loss of appetite may hint that your gut, a key player in immunity, needs support.
Certain medical conditions, including diabetes, autoimmune diseases, cancers, and infections such as HIV, as well as medications like corticosteroids and chemotherapy, can impact immunity. “If you have a chronic illness, boosting your immune system requires a team effort –eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep and managing stress are crucial,” Dr. Nkosi advises.
To keep your defences in optimal condition, she recommends practical tips: consume plenty of fruit and vegetables, limit sugar and takeaways, stay hydrated, remain active (aim for 150 minutes a week), get vaccinated, wash your hands frequently, and manage stress with relaxation techniques such as yoga. Also, don’t forget about vitamin supplements like C, D, and zinc, but always consult your healthcare provider beforehand. IB
TANYA NEFDT IS PROOF THAT FITNESS DOESN’T HAVE TO BE SERIOUS TO BE EFFECTIVE. WITH HUMOUR, HEART, AND THE OCCASIONAL PASTA INDULGENCE, SHE’S SHOWING US ALL HOW TO LIVE LIFE OUT LOUD, ONE GYM SELFIE AT A TIME.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
If you live in Cape Town and haven’t bumped into Tanya Nefdt (on your screen, your feed, or at your favourite café alongside her pup Munich), you may want to check if you’ve been living under a rock.
The celebrated media personality and producer, best known for sharing uplifting news storie on eTV news and her work on The Aden Thomas Breakfast Show, is also a fitness fanatic with the kind of effervescent energy that should probably be bottled and sold.
We spent a day following Tanya from burpees to brunch to find out what keeps her smiling, sweating, and (mostly) on track.
“I’ve had a personal trainer for the past two years, Shakir Galiem, and honestly, without him, I’d be a bit lost,” Tanya laughs. “He puts me through this
rigorous one-hour session that includes a lot of weight training and cardio.”
But it’s not all smooth sailing. “There’s this one move, I don’t even know the name, but it involves a burpee into a full-on jump with weights in hand. I try to distract my trainer with small talk, but there’s no getting out of it!”
Tanya trains with Shakir twice a week but stays active the rest of the time with walks, light cardio, or the occasional hike or padel match. “The main focus is consistency,” she explains. “Even if it’s freezing and raining, those are the days when showing up really matters.”
As Shakir puts it: “Two sessions a week, done consistently for a full year, is ten times better than training seven days a week for two weeks straight, then ghosting the gym for two months.”
• Session 1: Upper body and core: burpees, dips, bear crawls and more sweat than a summer braai.
• Session 2: Lower body and light jog: glute bands, hip thrusts, Romanian deadlifts and a breezy 3km jog to finish.
• Session 3: Active fun: walk the dog, play padel, or hike if time (and weather) allow.
Though she loves strength training, it’s the cardio that gives Tanya that post-workout high. “I love skipping and running on the treadmill – there’s something weirdly magical about it. You feel like you’re running the Comrades, but you’re just staying in one spot!”
If you’re a Tanya fan, you’ll know she always seems so energetic. What’s her secret? “I’ve always been active. As a kid, I tried every sport imaginable, and I’m still curious like that. I’ll try anything once!”
It’s unsurprisingly then that she’s drawn to highintensity movement.
Her loyal gym sidekick? Her dog, Munich, who’s become something of a local celebrity. (And yes, he’s even got his own Instagram page @ munichnefdt.)
“He follows me from machine to machine like a little cheerleader. Everyone at the gym knows him and is careful around him. He’s more supportive than chaotic – thankfully!”
Tanya also uses social media to keep workouts interesting. “Posting a reel or a selfie is a reminder that I showed up and put in the work. Even when the gym feels tough, just showing up is the first win.”
Her mindset keeps her going. “My mind is what keeps me motivated. And my dog,” she adds with a grin. “He’s my cheerleader-slash-security-guard. During at-home workouts, he follows me around the house like, ‘Are we done yet?’”
When it comes to food, Tanya keeps things flexible. “I don’t have a strict routine. I believe in eating what I’m craving that day, but of course, everything in moderation.”
She often starts the day on an empty stomach. “I don’t usually eat before a workout and only eat hours later. My trainer calls it intermittent fasting. I call it: I eat when I’m hungry.”
Her ultimate indulgence? “Paaaasta! I love all kinds. I swear I must have Italian blood in me! But as you can imagine, it’s not on my trainer’s list of recommended foods.”
Still, Tanya knows the importance of nutrition. “That’s the most crucial part, because you can train all you want, but you won’t see results without the right food.” (Take notes, fellow pasta lovers.)
When the cameras are off and the trainers are (briefly) off-duty, Tanya knows how to unwind. “If I’m not feeling 100%, I walk the dog, nap, binge Netflix (sometimes all three at once),” she jokes. “And yes, there have been ‘wine and workout’ days… but let’s not tell my trainer that.” IB
FEELING FLAT, FRAZZLED OR FED UP? YOUR MID-YEAR MOOD MIGHT NEED A MENU MAKEOVER. FROM BRAIN-LOVING BERRIES TO FEEL-GOOD FATS, THESE TASTY TIPS WILL HAVE YOU EATING YOUR WAY BACK TO HAPPY IN NO TIME.
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
Feeling rundown? Cranky? Tired? All of the above? Before you blame your energy dip on Mercury in retrograde or the weather, take a look at your plate. According to Kelly Scholtz, registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA), what we eat plays a major role in how we feel. Here’s how to fuel your mood with food – no kale chants required.
“Plenty of vegetables and fruits, like leafy greens, fresh herbs and berries... help regulate inflammation and support a healthy gut microbiome,” says Scholtz. That’s science-speak for: your brain loves this stuff. These colourful plants are loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that keep your neurons firing and your mood steady.
These humble pantry staples deliver B vitamins, which “contribute to neurotransmitter production and regulation,” explains Scholtz. Their high fibre
content also supports your gut microbiome. Plus, their low GI nature helps regulate blood sugar and energy.
“DHA in particular is critical for brain structure and function,” Scholtz notes. Think salmon, sardines, and pilchards. Not only do they boost your brain, but omega-3s have been linked to reduced risk of depression. And yes, you can batch-cook fishcakes on Sunday and freeze them – future you will thank you.
Healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, and fish are brain heroes. “They support healthy blood flow to the brain and reduce the risk of strokes,” says Scholtz. Bonus: they make everything taste better.
Thanks to the gut-brain axis, your microbiome’s in on the mood game too. “Gut bacteria produce or modulate neurotransmitters like serotonin,” says Scholtz. Add sauerkraut to your sandwich or kimchi to your salad, your brain (and your tastebuds) will be buzzing.
Scholtz recommends using a meal formula like protein + whole grain + veg + healthy fat and setting aside time for weekly prep. “When moodboosting foods are in your house, you’re more likely to eat them.” Smart, simple, and no spirulina powder required. IB

WHERE MODERN INNOVATION MEETS TIMELESS TRADITION, THIS CONTEMPORARY FARMHOUSE IN THE HIGHVELD BLENDS SOULFUL DESIGN WITH FUNCTIONAL LIVING.
BY ILZE BERNARDO, FOUNDER, CENTRE LINE ARCHITECTS
Concept & Inspiration: A Contemporary Take on Farmhouse Charm
When approaching this residential project, the primary inspiration was rooted in traditional farmhouse design, reinterpreted with a modern aesthetic. The goal was to retain the warmth and familiarity of classic farmhouse architecture while introducing contemporary materials and forms.
For instance, instead of traditional wooden louvres, rusted steel louvre panels were used,
offering durability and a striking visual contrast. The pitched roof - a hallmark of farmhouse design as retained, while stone cladding, typically reserved for plinths, was elevated to a key design feature.
The homeowners’ vision played a crucial role in shaping the project. Having previously lived in a traditional farmhouse-style home, they sought a more modern interpretation. One that maintained the essence of farmhouse living but with cleaner lines and updated materials.
The site’s natural surroundings significantly influenced the design. One boundary of the property borders a wildlife green area, and the house was carefully positioned to maximise these views.
The client wanted uninterrupted sightlines from key living spaces, especially the kitchen, so they could enjoy the scenery while going about their daily routines. The kitchen is indeed the heart of the home. Sustainability was another driving factor.
The house was oriented to face North, East and Northeast, optimising natural light and reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling. This thoughtful placement not only enhances energy efficiency but also ensures that every bedroom and living space benefits from the natural outlook.
One of the biggest challenges was harmonising the clients’ vision with practical execution, all while adhering to regulations and budget constraints. The solution lay in strategic material choices and clever spatial planning.
A standout feature is the steel screen on the Western façade, which serves a dual purpose: it acts as an aesthetic element while shielding the home gym from the harsh late-afternoon sun. This balance of form and function is a recurring theme throughout the home.
Several bespoke details make this home truly special:
Rusted steel screens on the gables offer a weathered yet modern look.
• Glass blocks in the safe room allow natural light without compromising security.
• A custom-designed staircase that serves as a sculptural focal point.
• Innovative skylights in the main bathroom enhance the sense of space.
The choice of materials was deliberate, blending farmhouse heritage with contemporary resilience:
• Stone cladding, a nod to traditional farmhouses, was used expansively for texture and character.
• Steel screens replaced timber to withstand the dry Highveld climate, minimising maintenance.
While the CentreLine team’s involvement ended at the approval stage, the construction phase still held surprises. One notable adjustment was expanding the covered patio area to accommodate the clients’ extensive collection of hunting trophies - a testament to how a home evolves to suit its inhabitants.
The home incorporates several eco-conscious features:
• Optimal orientation for passive heating and cooling.
• Solar panels, water tanks and heat pumps to reduce energy consumption.
• LED lighting throughout for efficiency.
Ilze’s greatest pride lies in how the house presents itself from the street: striking yet inviting. More importantly, the clients love living in it, proving that the design is not just visually appealing but highly functional.
Architectural Philosophy: Form Follows Function
This project embodies the belief that aesthetic and practicality must co-exist. By responding to the local vernacular and environmental context, rather than chasing trends, the design ensures longevity and timelessness.
Enhancing Daily Living
The home’s connection to nature transforms everyday life. The panoramic wildlife views create a serene retreat, allowing the homeowners to unwind as if they were far from the city.
Ilze’s Favourite Feature: The Steel Screens
The rusted steel screens stand out as both a design statement and a functional solution, encapsulating the project’s ethos of modern reinterpretation.
Timeless Design Elements
Because the design was guided by local context and environmental responsiveness, every element - from the materials to the orientation - is built to endure.
This home is a testament to thoughtful, clientcentred design. By blending farmhouse tradition with contemporary innovation, Ilze has created a functional, sustainable and visually compelling residence that will remain relevant for years to come. For those looking to build their dream home, this project serves as inspiration: true timelessness comes from designing with purpose, not just following trends.

VOLVO’S ALL-ELECTRIC EX90 REDEFINES FAMILY LUXURY WITH SLEEK SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN, CUTTING-EDGE TECH, AND POWERFUL PERFORMANCE. WITH SEVEN SPACIOUS SEATS, ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES INCLUDING LIDAR, AND A PREMIUM AUDIO SYSTEM, IT’S THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC SUVS, DESIGNED FOR DRIVERS WHO DEMAND STYLE, INNOVATION, AND PEACE OF MIND ON EVERY JOURNEY.
BY BYRON LUKAS VOLVO SA
Hello! It’s me again, your friendly Inbound SA driver, testing and reviewing some of the new (or old) vehicles you love. This month, we are off on a magical journey of innovation and design.
Volvo’s boldest leap yet into the electric vehicle space has officially landed on South African roads. Introducing the Volvo EX90—an all-electric, seven-seater SUV that reimagines the modern family car through a distinctly Scandinavian lens.
Positioned as the spiritual successor to the iconic XC90, the EX90 blends Volvo’s revered safety credentials and minimalist design philosophy with state-of-the-art electric performance and connected technology. It’s a statement vehicle for a new generation of conscious drivers—one that promises to lead the charge in the premium electric SUV segment.
True to Volvo’s Scandinavian design roots, the EX90 embraces a minimalist aesthetic characterised by clean, flowing lines and the brand’s unmistakable ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights. The design feels familiar yet forwardthinking, offering understated elegance rather than flashy embellishment.
One element that does break from this seamless silhouette is the prominently mounted LiDAR sensor, positioned atop the windscreen. While its presence has stirred debate, particularly among attendees at the launch event, it serves a critical function, enabling the EX90 to detect potential hazards up to 250 metres away.
Controversial placement aside, the overall design remains restrained and considered, aligning with Volvo’s brand ethos and the importance of this flagship electric model in its global line-up.
Step inside the Volvo EX90 and you’re greeted by a cabin that exudes contemporary sophistication. Crafted with soft-touch materials and boasting exceptional perceived build quality, the interior design is minimalist yet luxurious. Natural light floods the space thanks to an expansive panoramic sunroof, enhancing the airy feel of the generously glazed cabin.
The seven-seat layout offers impressive versatility. Passengers in the second row enjoy ample legroom and headspace, making long journeys a pleasure, even for adults. While the third row may be a snug fit for taller travellers, folding it down transforms the EX90 into a capacious five-seater with an enormous 655-litre boot—perfect for family road trips, weekend escapes, or just living large.
It delivers a rich, immersive audio experience that transforms every drive into a private concert.
At the heart of the Volvo EX90’s cabin lies a striking 14.5-inch touchscreen, powered by
a sophisticated Android-based interface. Integrated with Google Maps, Google Assistant, and a suite of downloadable apps, the system keeps drivers connected and in control. However, the almost exclusive reliance on touchscreen inputs—even for everyday tasks like adjusting the climate, opening the glovebox, or switching on the hazard lights—may prove distracting.
Music lovers will be in their element with the 25-speaker, 1610-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system, enhanced by Dolby Atmos. It delivers a rich, immersive audio experience that transforms every drive into a private concert.
Under the bonnet, the EX90 is just as impressive. Dual electric motors deliver 380kW of power and a thunderous 910Nm of torque. Volvo claims a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 4.9 seconds—an assertive figure that feels entirely realistic based on our short but thrilling time behind the wheel. Through the intuitive infotainment system, drivers can quickly tailor key performance settings—including regenerative braking levels and the activation of “Performance” mode, which sharpens throttle response for a more spirited drive.
Weighing in at a substantial 2,787kg, the EX90 remains composed on the road. Its air suspension system smooths out surface imperfections, offering a ride that feels serene and refined. That said, in true EV fashion, the steering lacks tactile feedback, and the SUV’s considerable size can create a sense of detachment behind the wheel, despite its impressive acceleration and confident cornering capabilities.
Volvo claims a range of up to 751 km in urban conditions and 604 km on the combined cycle, courtesy of a 111 kWh battery. Charging from 10% to 80% is achievable in approximately 30 minutes using a 250kW DC fast charger.
While the performance figures are impressive, real-world efficiency will depend on driving style, road conditions, and usage patterns. Volvo has also confirmed that the EX90 is equipped with built-in bi-directional charging technology—a feature that could eventually allow owners to power household appliances or even parts of their home directly from the vehicle. However,
this functionality isn’t active just yet, with availability expected via a future software update.
Safety has long been a hallmark of the Volvo brand, and the EX90 carries that legacy forward. Packed with cutting-edge driver assistance systems, the SUV also features integrated LiDAR technology, designed to elevate hazard detection and take a significant step towards Volvo’s longterm vision of fully autonomous driving.
Billed as the safest Volvo ever made, the EX90 sets a new benchmark, which is no small claim from a marque synonymous with automotive safety.
While our time with the vehicle at launch was limited and didn’t allow for a full exploration of its safety systems, early international reviews note that some features were not yet active, though Volvo has confirmed these will be rolled out in future software updates.
Priced at R2,650,000, the Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin Performance offers value when considering its premium features and comprehensive ownership package.
The price includes a three-year/60,000 km maintenance plan, a five-year/100,000 km warranty, an eight-year battery warranty, and five years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance.
To further enhance the ownership experience, Volvo South Africa is offering new EX90 buyers two years of complimentary public charging, a professionally installed GridCars wallbox charger, and 10GB of Vodacom mobile data per month for three years, making the shift to electric mobility smoother and more connected than ever.
Until our next journey! IB

STEP OFF THE BEATEN PATH AND INTO THE VIBRANT HEART OF KHAYELITSHA WITH ABCD CONCEPTS. CELEBRATING A DECADE OF AUTHENTIC TOWNSHIP ADVENTURES, THIS LOCAL TRAVEL AGENCY OFFERS IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES, FROM COOKING CLASSES TO CYCLING TOURS, THAT CONNECT VISITORS TO THE RICH CULTURE, RESILIENCE, AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT OF SOUTH AFRICA’S TOWNSHIPS.
BY SHORN KHUMALO
For 10 years, Khayelitsha-based travel agency ABCD Concepts has been offering international and domestic travellers a unique kasi experience through educational tours, South African cuisine, and socio-cultural exchanges.
Founded in 2015 by Khayelitsha natives Buntu Matole and Ayanda Cuba, the agency was born out of the socio-economic challenges faced by the township, including high unemployment rates, poverty, and crime.
In stark contrast, only 35 kilometres away, lies the cosmopolitan Cape Town City Centre.
Surrounded by natural beauty, Cape Town is renowned for its stunning beaches, biodiversity, and iconic landmarks, including Table Mountain, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Travellers flock to Cape Town to explore its famous attractions, such as Cape Point, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the V&A Waterfront and Robben Island.
However, Buntu and Ayanda recognised an opportunity to offer visitors something differentan inclusive experience that introduces tourists to the rich culture and history of Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s largest townships.
Their idea came to life while they were in the city centre for their studies or running errands, where they often encountered tourists curious about the township experience. They saw a gap in the market and decided to add a socio-cultural tour of the townships to the Cape Town tourism itinerary.
Khayelitsha, which means “New Home,” is a vibrant and entrepreneurial community, full of culture and heritage. It is Cape Town’s largest
township and the second largest in South Africa. Townships like Khayelitsha have a history rooted in racial segregation, with development historically constrained by apartheid-era policies.
While Khayelitsha remains underdeveloped in many areas, it continues to grow, offering an array of businesses, restaurants, and cultural experiences that showcase the resilience and diversity of its people.
ABCD Concepts offers a range of authentic experiences that educate and entertain both local and international guests.
Explore the vibrant community on a guided cycling tour. Visit local landmarks such as Khayelitsha Remembrance Square, engage with local entrepreneurs, discover local hot spots, and taste traditional dishes while learning a bit of the local language.
Experience Khayelitsha on foot with a 5 to 10 km jog through both formal and informal settlements. The tour includes stops at local cafés, like Siki’s Koffee Kafe, where visitors can engage with the community and learn more about its entrepreneurial spirit.
Embark on a 2½-hour walking tour of Khayelitsha, including an introduction to Site B, the first informal settlement in the township. Guests will ride a local taxi to the Khayelitsha Remembrance Square, a mosaic monument, and visit Khayelitsha Mall and Mini Africa, an informal market with a vibrant mix of African immigrants from countries like Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Malawi.
Get hands-on in the kitchen with local families, learning to prepare traditional township meals such as Umfino, Amanqina, Umphokoqo, and Homemade Lamb Stew. These recipes, passed down through generations, offer guests a true taste of daily life in a Xhosa home.
Join the local celebration with an unforgettable block party experience. Groove to the best local music, enjoy delicious food, and discover the vibrant social life of the township through an immersive walking tour that ends in an unforgettable party. IB

SOME PLACES DON’T JUST OFFER A VIEW, THEY CHANGE YOUR INTERNAL RHYTHM, AND THAT’S WHAT I FOUND IN VILANCULOS, THAT SMALL MOZAMBICAN TOWN THAT HUGS THE INDIAN OCEAN, WHERE THE TIDES DICTATE THE PACE AND EVERY MOMENT SEEMS WRAPPED IN SUNLIGHT, SALT, AND SILENCE.
BY SARAH KINGDOM
There’s a point when travel stops being just a holiday and starts becoming something quieter, deeper. It happens when you stop checking your phone for signal, stop noticing the time, and stop thinking in terms of schedules. Arriving at Saudade, a luxurious villa perched high above the sea in Vilanculos, I reached that point. And what I ultimately discovered here went far beyond its stunning design and sumptuous beds. I found myself falling for this whole stretch of coastline–its people, its marine life, and its wonderful, wild simplicity.
WHERE LAND MEETS LIGHT
Vilanculos isn’t flashy. It’s not trying to impress. And that’s perhaps its greatest charm. It’s the kind of place where life unfolds gently: fishermen launching their dhows at dawn, people strolling along the sand, the endless movement of the tides. Vilanculos also serves as the main gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, a truly special collection of islands.
SAUDADE: A PLACE TO PAUSE
My base was Saudade, the perfect place from which to explore Vilanculos. The villa itself is a
harmonious blend of thatched roofs, natural textures, and cool, contemporary design. Think open-plan spaces, a palm-fringed infinity pool, and quiet nooks perfect for sunrise coffee or sunset reflections. It’s warm and elegant without ever feeling over-designed.
Saudade is designed for slow living. With its organic layout, open-plan spaces, and blend of traditional Mozambican textures and contemporary style, it feels like it was shaped by the land rather than imposed on it. This is a place that blends understated luxury with an unmistakable emotional pull. Its very name, saudade, is a unique Portuguese word evoking a deep, nostalgic longing, often for something that can’t quite be put into words.
But this isn’t just a story about a building. It’s about everything that radiates out from it.
A short boat ride from shore, the Bazaruto Marine National Park reveals an underwater world of colour and vibrancy. Established in 1971, the marine national park protects five idyllic islands - Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue, along with their surrounding coral reefs, seagrass beds, and turquoise waters. Renowned for its marine biodiversity, including dugongs, dolphins, and over 2,000 fish species, this is a tropical marine sanctuary. Out snorkelling, I drifted over gardens of coral bursting with life – electric blue parrotfish, surgeonfish, butterfly fish, and clouds of anthias.
Tired out from snorkelling, we picnicked on Magaruque Island under a billowing blue tent, while the tide slipped slowly out, exposing sandbanks dotted with ghost crabs. There was chilled wine, delectable food, and that particular kind of silence that only comes when everyone present knows there’s nowhere better to be.
Back at the villa, I found myself pulled again and again to the beach. Beach walks in Vilanculos are meditative. At low tide, the ocean retreats, leaving behind mirror-like flats where you can walk for what feels like hours, surrounded by the shimmer of sky reflecting off sand.
I left early, barefoot, tracing a line along the water’s edge, passing herons, perched on long legs, waiting to catch their breakfast. Local
fishermen greeted me with warm smiles and a “bom dia,” the Portuguese greeting that seemed to match the morning light. Unlike other beach destinations where vendors jostle for your attention, Vilanculos lets you be. You’re welcome here, but not chased. It’s a subtle, beautiful thing.
Away from the beach, I joined a local guide on a walk through the town and market, where stalls overflowed with fruit, vegetables, dried fish, and easy smiles. Mozambican Portuguese mixed with local dialects. No one was in a hurry. I wasn’t either.
One morning, we set out early, heading south of town to explore the seagrass beds known for sheltering wild seahorses. With the tide just right, we waded through the shallow waters. Our guide Ilídio moved with slow, practised ease. And then suddenly he spotted one. A tiny, yellow seahorse, wrapped around a blade of grass, nearly invisible to the untrained eye. We found more, some with rust-red bands and others pale like driftwood. No touching, just reverence. It felt more like a pilgrimage than a tour.
Of course, Vilanculos has its thrills: scuba diving, dhow sailing, kite surfing, and horseback rides along the beach. But for all the activities on offer, Vilanculos also invites you to slow down. There’s space here – space to breathe, to be, to recalibrate.
Each day closed with the sound of the waves breaking on the shore, and a sense of quiet joy. I’d sit in silence, watching it all unfold, doing nothing, yet feeling entirely fulfilled.
The team at Saudade enhanced that feeling. Their attention was always present but never intrusive. They remembered how I liked my coffee and when I wanted solitude. It felt like I was staying with good friends who knew how to host, quietly and well.
By the end of my stay, I understood why the villa was called Saudade, that Portuguese word for a longing that lives in the bones. Saudade is not just a place, it’s a sensation, one of remembering something while still living it, of feeling homesick for a time and a place you haven’t even left.
On my final morning, I woke to stillness. The sea was like glass, the sky a faint wash of pink. I stood barefoot on the beach, trying to commit the scene to memory. The soft hush of the waves, the calls of the fishermen, the lingering feeling of having returned to something I didn’t know I’d lost. That’s saudade, a kind of homesickness for a moment even while you’re living it.
I didn’t want to leave, but I knew I’d take Vilanculos with me, in the way the sea still echoes in your ears long after you’ve dried off.

BUSINESS TRAVEL DOESN’T HAVE TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE. SOUTH AFRICAN PROFESSIONALS CAN SECURE MORE RESTFUL FLIGHTS WITHOUT THE HEFTY PRICE TAG BY USING SMART STRATEGIES LIKE EARLY BOOKINGS, LOYALTY PROGRAMS, AND SEAT BIDDING.

Long-haul flights often mean cramped economy seating and jet lag, but with a little effort, you can enjoy businessclass comfort at economy prices.
Rategang Moroke, Operations Manager at Corporate Traveller, shares insider tips on how to make the most of loyalty perks and clever hacks to ensure a more comfortable and productive trip.
Book early to secure the best seats, as premium options fill up fast and prices fluctuate. Early booking helps avoid uncomfortable middle seats.
TIP: Pay the small fee upfront to choose your seat, rather than waiting until check-in.
2.
Upgrading to premium economy can be more affordable than paying for extra legroom in economy, offering better seating and service.
TIP: The price difference is often small, especially when booking early, so compare all fare classes before deciding.
In economy, seat positioning can boost comfort. The back rows often have empty seats, and seats over the wings provide a smoother ride and sometimes, if they’re exit row seats, extra legroom.
TIP: Ask your travel management company about blocking or purchasing the seat next to yours for extra space; this is often cheaper than upgrading cabins.
Sign up for an airline’s loyalty program when booking to boost your chances of a free upgrade. Many airlines also offer last-minute upgrade auctions at discounted prices.
TIP: Keep an eye on these auctions for a chance at a cheaper upgrade - worst case scenario, you stay in your current seat.
To avoid being bumped from an overbooked flight, always confirm your seat in advance.
TIP: Get in touch with your travel management company to secure your seat early and prevent lastminute changes.
When booking, compare all economy tiers, not just basic vs. premium. Some offer extra legroom or amenities at a small price difference. Check the cost between these and a premium upgrade for the best value.
TIP: Booking early might unlock special pricing for upgrades. IB
FROM SKYROCKETING ELECTRICITY TARIFFS TO RELENTLESS FUEL HIKES AND RISING EVERYDAY COSTS, INFLATION STATS DON’T TELL THE FULL STORY. AS BUDGETS BUCKLE UNDER PRESSURE, MORE HOUSEHOLDS FACE TOUGH DEBT CHOICES. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE TURNING TO DEBT REVIEW.
Despite what the headlines may say about easing inflation and stable interest rates, many South Africans continue to feel the financial pressure. While loadshedding may have temporarily taken a backseat, the cost of electricity is soaring. Petrol prices remain high, groceries stretch less each month, and everyday essentials, from school supplies to public transport, are becoming more expensive.
For the average household, this isn’t just about trimming luxuries, it’s about financial survival.
ELECTRICITY TARIFFS AND FUEL PRICES KEEP CLIMBING
Electricity costs have surged by a staggering 190% between 2014 and 2024, and that doesn’t even account for Eskom’s most recent 12.75% hike in April 2025. Municipal tariffs are also expected to rise again in July, making it even harder for families to manage basic household expenses.
Fuel prices tell a similar story. Petrol costs have jumped by over 87% in the past decade. With transport ranking as the third-largest expense for South African households, after housing and food, this ongoing surge adds significant pressure to already strained budgets.
Although inflation currently sits at 2.7%, below
the South African Reserve Bank’s 3%–6% target range, the cumulative impact tells a different story. Since 2015, inflation has risen by approximately 56%. What R100 could buy in 2015 now requires R156, illustrating just how far household income has been stretched.
The real problem? Salaries haven’t kept up. As a result, the gap between earnings and essential expenses continues to widen, leaving more families in precarious financial positions.
As the cost-of-living crisis deepens, more South Africans are facing tough financial choices, particularly when it comes to debt. Whether it’s managing repayments or facing the prospect of debt review, the pressure is on.
Thankfully, debt review isn’t the only option. From tightening household budgets and prioritising essential spending to seeking professional financial advice, there are proactive steps that can help prevent long-term financial distress.
Gavyn Letley, Product Head from specialist loan provider DirectAxis, suggests that there are a range of proactive steps to consider before taking this step, saying: “Debt review is a powerful tool but it comes with legal implications and longterm commitments.”
1. Budgeting and tracking expenses: Understanding where your money goes each month and cutting out unnecessary expenses is a sensible first step. There are plenty of free budget templates available online. Alternatively, the FNB Banking App has some free, highly intuitive tools like nav» Money’s Track My Spend and Smart Budget tools.
Thereafter, try to focus on paying off debts that attract the highest interest. Free tools such as www.directaxis.co.za/pulse allow you to check your credit rating and provide a summary of your credit agreements, such as bonds, vehicle finance, cellphone contracts and store accounts.
2. Negotiating with creditors: Informing creditors about difficulties in repaying them may sound daunting, but it’s a responsible thing to do. Some lenders are open to restructuring payments, reducing interest rates or providing payment holidays.
“Speaking to a credit provider and explaining your situation is always better than simply not paying. If you miss payments or stop altogether, it will negatively affect your credit score. This can limit your ability to borrow money in future or mean you’ll be charged higher interest,” explains Letley.
3. Debt consolidation loans: Consumers with a healthy credit score may qualify to merge various debts into one manageable loan with a potentially lower interest rate and single monthly payment. This can also save money on service fees and credit life cover costs.
Depending on how the loan is structured, it could also improve cash flow by allowing smaller payments over a longer period. Just be aware that this will also extend the interest payments.
4. Using credit life insurance: Consumers are often unaware that their loans could include credit life insurance cover. It’s worth asking, because if they do, and your financial difficulties resulted from retrenchment or disability, you may be able to claim.
Letley advises that if you’ve explored all other options and are still considering debt review, it’s crucial to understand that this is a formal, legal process governed by the National Credit Act. Entering into debt review means you won’t be able to access new credit until the process is completed and you’ve been issued with a clearance certificate.
If you choose this route, be sure you fully understand what it entails. Only work with a reputable debt counsellor who is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR)—this ensures your rights are protected and the process is properly managed.
“When it comes to managing your money, hoping for the best isn’t a strategy,” Letley says. “But neither is making a rash decision that could carry long-term consequences. Rather, calmly assess your financial situation, understand your options, and do your homework. And above all, speak to your bank or a trusted financial adviser before committing to any course of action.” IB
JAMESON STOCKS, AN INTERNATIONALLY CELEBRATED MICHELIN-STAR CHEF, IS BRINGING HIS CULINARY BRILLIANCE TO SOUTH AFRICA AS HE PREPARES TO OPEN A RESTAURANT AND COLLABORATE WITH TOP LOCAL CHEFS THIS YEAR. WITH A CAREER SPANNING THE GLOBE AND A STORY ROOTED IN RESILIENCE, JAMESON IS READY TO SHARE HIS PASSION FOR FOOD AND INNOVATION WITH SOUTH AFRICAN AUDIENCES.
BY MILOU STAUB
YOUR JOURNEY FROM LIVING ON THE STREETS AS A TEENAGER TO BECOMING AN INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED CHEF IS EXTRAORDINARY. HOW DID THOSE EARLY EXPERIENCES SHAPE YOUR APPROACH TO FOOD AND LIFE?
Living on the streets certainly gives you a perspective about food – whether it’s a humble sandwich or a soup, but in truth I get more experiences and inspiration from travelling the world and tasting new things and incorporating it into my style of food.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING MENTORED BY MARCO PIERRE WHITE AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE, AND WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE LESSON YOU LEARNED UNDER HIS GUIDANCE?
Marco is a very well-known figure in the UK and he has trained many well-known chefs, so it was an honour. I have been fortunate to have to learn from the chefs who were in the kitchens with me at that time, like Peter Templehoff and Brendan Collins, Robert Reed… their advice has also served me well.
YOU’RE ABOUT TO EXPLORE SOUTH AFRICA’S RICH CULINARY CULTURE. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC DISHES OR INGREDIENTS YOU’RE EXCITED TO TRY OR INCORPORATE INTO YOUR REPERTOIRE?
I love coming back to South Africa, it’s like a home from home for me. I love the energy, food, culture and the people. If I was to be really picky, I would say that I love to cook with Springbok when I am here and love using the South African braai to do the meat on.
AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE PRINCE’S TRUST, YOU’VE SUPPORTED YOUNG PEOPLE FOR OVER A DECADE. HOW DOES MENTORING AND EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CHEFS INSPIRE YOUR OWN WORK?
I work with many charities as I love to see the young chefs coming up through the ranks, I have had a few lovely chefs who have worked under me go on to earn their own Michelin Stars. I had a young boy who trained with me who now has two Michelin stars!
YOU’VE SUCCESSFULLY RAISED TWO SONS WHILE NAVIGATING THE PRESSURES OF A HIGH-PROFILE CULINARY CAREER. HOW DO YOU STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR FAMILY LIFE AND PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS?
I brought up my two boys since they were babies on my own. To be honest, if I were working in cutthroat restaurant kitchens it would be practically impossible to be a single dad. Working for the celebs, doing TV shows, consulting, and the other work that I do allows me to have a good work life balance for me and my boys. This is part of the reason that I have also launched a new, more casual, dining venture here in the UK that will be rolled out across the whole world, which is less pressure on me, much more fun, as well as being accessible and affordable for everyone.
With Brad Pitt securing the rights to your biopic, how does it feel to have your life story turned into a movie? Do you have any involvement in the creative process?
Brad’s company has purchased the movie rights, but I do not have any sort of involvement as to how it is put together and how the process will work. It will still be a while before production begins so I’m just as excited as you are to see how it all goes [laughs].
IF SOMEONE WERE TO EXPERIENCE JAMESON STOCKS’ COOKING FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT DISH WOULD YOU WANT THEM TO TRY TO TRULY UNDERSTAND YOUR STYLE?
When I was younger, I used to go all out and completely over the top with my food, but as I have gotten older, I have learnt how to restrain myself from putting too many ingredients on the plate. Simplicity is key; let the ingredients do the talking! It’s about making it as simple as possible, so that the consumer can truly understand what they are eating without me confusing them with too many tastes. My dishes now contain a maximum of three or four ingredients – that’s it! My all-time favourite dish is my scallops three ways, three different temperatures – which is a scallop tartar with vanilla, a whole pan-seared scallop without the roe and then we make a roe powder, and then finally, a poached scallop. They are served at three different temperatures preparations, with ginger. These would be the prime examples of Jameson on a plate as they show different skills, they’re modern, and super tasty. IB

Dear Self,
Remember that day you were mindlessly scrolling through Pinterest when a quote smacked you right in the face with its brutal honesty? You know the one, the “choose your hard” post that made you pause mid-scroll and think, “well, that’s uncomfortably spot-on.”
Of course, you have G to thank for introducing you to this whole fitness lifestyle that made that quote resonate so deeply.
It’s not often you cross paths with people who think and behave like you do. You see, you live life and refuse to just exist, and it’s so refreshing to find another person who breathes this principle too. It feels like he just gets it, happiness isn’t about owning more possessions, it’s about all the little things.
Happiness is about being excited about the little things. Making yourself that cup of coffee, enjoying being caught in the rain during a morning run, admiring the sky’s pastel colours at sunset, handing out thoughtful handwritten notes...
So, back to that Pinterest revelation that stopped you in your tracks:
“Marriage is hard. Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Obesity is hard. Being fit is hard. Choose your hard. Being in debt is hard. Being financially disciplined is hard. Choose your hard. Starting a business is hard.
Working a 9-to-5 is hard. Choose your hard.
Life will never be easy. But you can choose your hard. Choose wisely!”
There it was, forcing you into a deep think about all the “hards” you’ve picked as your battles. At the beginning of the year, you were honestly a bit of a sad little puppy, playing Debbie Downer from someone’s thoughtless comment about how “if you were 10 kilos lighter, you’d be beautiful.” Ouch, right?
But look at you now! Thanks to G, who swooped into your life like some sort of fitness fairy godfather. He’s been grooming you into this sporty version of yourself, introducing you to grit, teaching you to dig deep, and most importantly, helping you believe in yourself again. The man turned you into a proper sporty spice!
Crossing paths with G has enhanced your life in ways you can’t even comprehend yet. The universe is kind, isn’t it?
Sometimes it lets you crash and burn spectacularly, just to give you the space to find your way back up; stronger, fitter, and surrounded by exactly the right people at exactly the right time.
Takeaway tip: Choose your hard wisely, and when life sends you a G, embrace the transformation with open arms.
As G always says, “Be good, if not, be good at it.”

By Popina Khumanda R300 (Penguin Books)
In her remote village, five-year-old Popina knew only the simple joys of childhood – climbing trees and exploring the surrounding fields. But in an instant her innocence was shattered when a group of strangers invaded the village, bringing with them a terror she could never have imagined. The Smallest Ones is a profoundly harrowing and powerful account of survival and resilience in the war-torn DRC of the early 2000s. Popina, her family and friends were captured by rebel soldiers and subjected to torture and rape. After several years in captivity, Popina and her older sister managed to escape, beginning an epic journey that took them all the way to South Africa. But their nightmare hadn’t ended...
If you’re interested in the complexity of the human experience, and the effects of colonisation, this one will disturb but also keep you riveted.
By David Africa R300 (African Perspectives)
Over five intense years, a small but skilled team of spies navigated a treacherous landscape of deceit, risks, and setbacks, culminating in the downfall of one of South Africa’s most dangerous terrorist organisations. Narrated by David Africa, the intelligence mastermind behind the operation, the book chronicles Pagad’s transformation from a local anti-gang and anti-drugs movement to a violent terror group, and takes readers deep into the heart of the covert operation, detailing the complexities of intelligence gathering, the internal resistance within the state security forces, and the team’s relentless pursuit of the terror network.

Take one bolshie, OTT, city-slicker Indian woman. One reticent and reserved white husband. And their three children. Place them in a far-flung SA village where mixed-race families are somewhat of a rarity, and you get front-row seats to a lifestyle that is both delightful and discombobulating. Told with that quirky lingo unique to Saffers of Indian origin, and spiced up with hilarity and introspection, The Village Indian is a celebration of identity, culture and food – and of being South African. Expect run-ins with deadly snakes, small-town scams and skulduggery, mischievous pointscoring and attempted coups d’état… all in all, fun on steroids.
