RACE INFORMATION The 2014 Williams Route 66 Marathon covers two days of races. The 5K run and walk, one-mile Fun Run and walk, and the Mascot Dash are held on Saturday. The 5K run and walk is USATF certified and will be electronically timed. The Fun Run and walk is not certified or timed.

START AND FINISH LINE INFORMATION The 5K and Fun Run start and finish lines are both on Cameron Street, north of Guthrie Green. Please plan to arrive early to familiarize yourself with the start and finish areas.

Portable restrooms are located throughout The Brady Arts District and at various points along the course. Please see The Brady Arts District Map on page 15 for exact locations. You should expect lines. Be patient and allow plenty of time to use these facilities prior to the race.

RACE-DAY INFORMATION TENT Please see The Brady Arts District Map on page 15 for the exact location. If you lose your timing tag or forget your race number, please visit the information tent for assistance.

GEAR CHECK Gear check is not available for the Saturday races.

YOUR RACE NUMBER Your race number must be worn on the front of your shirt or shorts so race officials, course photographers and finish line personnel can clearly see it. Race numbers are nontransferable and may only be worn by the participant to whom they are assigned.

GATORADE STATIONS The Williams Route 66 Marathon is proud to serve Gatorade and water at all Gatorade stations on the course. One Gatorade stop is provided for the 5K participants located after the 3-kilometer mark on Sixth Street between Boston Avenue and Main Street. The one-mile Fun Run does not have a Gatorade or water stop.

DROPPING OUT If you are unable to finish the race, please notify someone at the nearest aid station.

MEDICAL AID Medical aid will be provided on the course and at the finish line. Medical aid stations will be clearly marked along the course. There will also be medical personnel in golf carts along the course. Your personal safety is very important. All participants are required to complete the emergency information on the back of their race number and list any allergies for medical personnel.

SATURDAY RACES, CONTINUED FINISHERS’ FOOD AND BEVERAGE AREA

BASED ON ELECTRONIC TIME

Participants will pass into the finishers’ food area after completing their race. Fruit and snacks will be provided as well as Gatorade, water, Muscle Milk, Pepsi and other Pepsi products. Participants will not be allowed to re-enter the food area once they leave.

Age-group awards (male and female): Under 10, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+

RESULTS All results are unofficial until certified by race officials. Participants can check their unofficial results at the Results Tent, presented by WPX Energy. (See The Brady Arts District Map on page 15 for the exact location.) Unofficial results will also be posted online at route66marathon.com as the race progresses. Race officials will post final results at route66marathon.com after certification.

AWARDS Awards will be given to participants in all timed and certified races (Marathon, HalfMarathon, Marathon Relay and 5K). Per USATF Rule 245.1, Open Men’s and Women’s and Master Men’s and Women’s top three awards will be based on gun time (the order in which the athletes cross the finish line). Age-group awards will be based on timing system time (the actual time elapsed between an athlete reaching the start line and finish line).

BASED ON ELECTRONIC TIME AND AGE GRADED Clydesdale awards: 170-184, 185-199, 200-214, 215-229, 230+ Athena awards: 145+ Weight-class awards will be based on age-graded times following USATF guidelines. Participants are eligible for one award. Award winners in the Open and Masters divisions will be excluded from the agegroup and weight-class awards.

AWARDS CEREMONY The awards ceremony will take place at the Guthrie Green Stage at 9:15 a.m. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in the Open Male, Open Female, Masters Male and Masters Female divisions in the 5K. No awards are provided for the Fun Run. Age-group and weight-class awards will not be announced from the stage. Clydesdale, Athena and age-group awards will be shipped to participants after the race. Please make sure that the address on your registration confirmation is correct. Awards will be shipped to the address you provided when you registered for the Williams Route 66 Marathon. Lost or stolen awards will not be replaced.

PARKING RACE INFORMATION The 2014 Williams Route 66 Marathon covers two days of races. The Marathon, Half-Marathon and Marathon Relay are held on Sunday. All Sunday races are USATF certified and will be electronically timed. ◆◆

Participants proceeding at a pace slower than 15 minutes per mile may be asked by the Tulsa Police Department to move to the sidewalk at various points on the course to allow the streets to open to traffic.

The electronic timing system will remain open for 7.5 hours (until 3:30 p.m.).

We do not guarantee that the Gatorade stations or medical aid stations will be open longer than the 15-minute per mile pace.

Ample parking is available on the streets and in paid parking lots in downtown Tulsa. Please see the parking map located on page 31 for more information.

START-LINE INFORMATION The Marathon, Half-Marathon and Marathon Relay start line is located on Main Street at Seventh Street in downtown Tulsa. The races will start heading toward the south on Main Street. Please plan to arrive early to familiarize yourself with the start area. GEAR CHECK Gear check is only available for the Sunday races. For Sunday, gear check-in is located on Boston Avenue between Sixth and Seventh Streets. You can pick up your gear after the race as you leave the secured finish area on M.B. Brady Street just east of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Please see The Brady Arts District Map on page 15 for exact location.

YOU MUST USE ONE OF THE CLEAR PLASTIC BAGS WE WILL PROVIDE ALONG WITH THE GEAR CHECK TAG FROM YOUR RACE NUMBER IN ORDER TO CHECK YOUR GEAR. OTHER BAGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. TULSA ROUTE 66 MARATHON, INC. IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST ITEMS.

TIME LIMIT The Marathon course is open for 6.5 hours beginning at 8 a.m. The course closes at 2:30 p.m. If participants choose to continue after 2:30 p.m., they do so at their own risk. Participants proceeding at a pace slower than 15 minutes per mile may be asked by the Tulsa Police Department to move to the sidewalk at various points on the course to allow the streets to open to traffic. No finish times will be recorded after 3:30 p.m. (7.5 hours). Finisher medals will only be awarded to those who finish within 7.5 hours. Finish line medical aid closes at 3:30 p.m. in the medical tent at the finish line. If problems are experienced after this time, please call 9-1-1 or proceed to the nearest emergency room.

IMPORTANT – PLEASE ARRANGE A MEETING PLACE WITH LOVED ONES BEFORE THE RACE STARTS. WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM TO REUNITE PARTICIPANTS WITH THEIR FAMILIES.

START CORRALS The corral system is used at the start of the Williams Route 66 Marathon, Half-Marathon and Relay to provide the best possible experience for all participants. Participants will be assigned to one of four start corrals based projected pace. All race registrants are required to submit past and projected pace information, which will be assessed and verified for proper corral assignments.

Each corral will be designated by a letter (A, B, C or D), which will correspond to a letter on each athlete’s bib. The entries for the corrals are on the east and west side of Main Street in downtown Tulsa, along Boulder and Boston Avenues. Participants are highly encouraged to review the start line map on page 21 and arrive early to make sure they have time to find their corral. Athletes will only be permitted into the corral that corresponds with the letter on their bib. Once in their assigned corral, athletes should line up by pace according to the signs posted in the corral. Athletes that wish to participate with other athletes that are friends and/or training partners may do so. However, if they are assigned to different corrals, they must start in the corral with the athlete that has the slowest entry time. There will be no exceptions to this provision.

SUNDAY RACES, CONTINUED Hand cycle and wheelchair athletes will have their own separate corral at the start line that will be placed in front of the elite athletes, as the hand cycle and wheelchair races start prior to the runners/walkers. Hand cycle and wheelchair participants will start at 8 a.m. Participants in Corral A will start at 8:02 a.m. Participants in other corrals will start five minutes after the corral ahead of them clears the start line.

GATORADE STATIONS The Williams Route 66 Marathon is proud to serve Gatorade and water at all Gatorade stations on the Williams Route 66 Marathon course. Gatorade stations are located approximately every two miles for the first 20 miles of the Marathon and every mile for miles 21 through 25. Please see the course maps in this guide for the Gatorade station locations.

SUNDAY RACES, CONTINUED ON-COURSE FOOD

Fresh oranges and bananas will be available to Marathon participants at the Gatorade station near mile 18. GU will be available just before the Gatorade station near mile 22. Pretzels will be available just before the Gatorade station near mile 24.

Once you cross the finish line, you will enter a secure zone – a fenced-off area for race participants and officials only. Marathon, Half-Marathon and Marathon Relay participants will receive their finisher’s medal in this area. Water and Gatorade are available in the finish area.

Assistance received from any other source than a race official may result in disqualification. In some areas, only the side of the road participants are on will be closed to vehicular traffic. As such, it is imperative that you stay within the cones marking the course. Any deviations from the marked course can result in a disqualification and serious injury. Race officials will be stationed along the course to ensure that each finisher has completed a full race distance.

Please make sure you have received the correct finisher’s medal before leaving the secure area. Participants in the Marathon will receive a finisher’s medal. A special My First Marathon medal is available for those completing their first marathon. Participants in the Half-Marathon and Relay will also receive a finisher’s medal.

ANY PARTICIPANT FOUND TO HAVE RUN/ WALKED LESS THAN THE FULL COURSE WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. DO NOT CROSS THE FINISH LINE IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE ENTIRE COURSE.

MEDICAL AID

DROPPING OUT If you are unable to finish the race, please notify someone at the nearest relay shuttle exchange location. You can ride a relay shuttle bus back to the finish line if you drop out of the race. Refer to the map for relay exchange locations on page 32.

MEMBERS OF THE MARATHON MANIACS, HALF FANATICS AND 50-STATES MARATHON CLUB WILL RECEIVE THEIR FINISHER’S MEDAL AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE MANIAC CORNER VIP AREA.

Medical aid will be provided on the course and at the finish line. Medical aid stations will be clearly marked along the course. There will also be medical personnel in golf carts along the course. The medical tent at Guthrie Green will be located to your right as you cross the finish line. Your personal safety is very important. AWARDS Awards will be given to participants in all timed and certified races (Marathon, Half-Marathon, Marathon Relay and 5K). Per USATF Rule 245.1, Open Men’s and Women’s and Master Men’s and Women’s top three awards will be based on gun time (the order in which the athletes cross the finish line). Age-group awards will be based on timing system time (the actual time elapsed between an athlete reaching the starting line and finish line).

Age-group and weight-class awards will not be announced from the stage. Race results can be checked online at route66marathon.com. Clydesdale, Athena, age-group and Relay awards will be shipped to the participants after the race. Please make sure that the address on your registration confirmation is correct. MARATHON RELAY INFORMATION

The Williams Route 66 Marathon Relay is a five-leg relay event. The Marathon Relay will follow the same course as the Marathon. One runner can run more than one consecutive leg of the relay. However, each relay team must have between three and five participants. Mixed teams must have at least two female participants. All members of a team must be 40 or older for the Masters division.

RELAY EXCHANGE ZONES The Relay exchange zones will be clearly delineated with cones and fencing. As runners approach the relay exchange zones, relay runners will be directed to the right side of the course and Marathon and Half-Marathon runners will be directed to keep left.

RELAY TEAM MEMBERS MUST KEEP THE EXCHANGE ZONES AND THE MARATHON COURSE CLEAR. IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CROSS THE COURSE TO GET TO EXCHANGE ZONES 1 AND 3. RELAY PARTICIPANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING ACROSS THE STREET SAFELY AND FOR CROSSING THE COURSE WITHOUT INTERFERING WITH ANY OTHER PARTICIPANTS. MARATHON RELAY EXCHANGE ZONES – WHILE YOU’RE THERE Be aware of the conditions and dress appropriately for the wait. There will not be much in the way of shelter at the exchange zones. Water and portable restrooms will be available near each exchange zone. It would be a good idea to have a clothing bag for each exchange zone, so that the runner just finishing will have some warm, dry clothes when he/she is done running. The runner starting out on the new leg can leave his/her clothes in the bag for the teammate to take back to the start. However you work out the logistics, you are responsible for your own gear! Don’t leave it on the bus and don’t expect the volunteers to be able to take care of it for you.

MARATHON RELAY NUMBERS AND TIMING TAG Your MYLAPS timing device is attached to your team’s relay race bib which is attached to an elastic belt. You should wear the belt while running your leg of the relay and give it to your team member to wear when you reach the relay exchange point.


Please note the following: Do not remove the tag from the bib. Wear the bib number visibly on your chest / torso. Do not fold or crumple the bib. Do not remove the foam spacer. The bib and tag are yours to keep. No need to return them. Be sure to cross all timing mats during the race.

RELAY SHUTTLES

The Marathon Relay shuttle buses will leave approximately every 30 minutes as needed. You should arrive at the Guthrie Green Shuttle Hub at least one hour before you expect to start running your leg of the relay. You are responsible for getting to the exchange zone on time. The timing of the Relay shuttle service is not guaranteed.

RELAY SHUTTLES ARE FOR PARTICIPANTS ONLY. SPECTATORS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON THE SHUTTLES. RACE-DAY CANCELLATION, RACE ALTERATION POLICY AND WEATHER POLICY It is the primary goal of the Williams Route 66 Marathon to provide and ensure a safe event for participants, volunteers and community attendees alike. We will be diligent in not exposing the participants, the volunteers or the community at large to any undue risk in the production and/ or execution of the event. We understand the commitment the participants have made in entering the race, however, the decisions regarding race cancellations and/ or alterations will be based on the larger community safety as well as the participants. Moreover, if community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress.

When weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants as a whole, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alteration of the race and/or the race course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions fall under an “Act of God” – and will not result in refunding of any race entry fee or future race credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places large financial burden on the Williams Route 66 Marathon organization prior to the event date. Thus, in

the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable that the financial impact on the race would not be any different than if the race was held without compromise. The Williams Route 66 Marathon officials, along with City of Tulsa officials, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. Prior to the race, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will apprise the participants of the weather conditions and how the on-course flag system designation works. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will describe any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and Tulsa Police and other City of Tulsa officials will communicate throughout the race course to direct participants to safe shelters to await transportation back to the start and/or finish area.

WEATHER In regard to weather specifically, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has adopted the WBGT (Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for participation in endurance events, could result in cancellation of the event. WBGT is considered “the most practical heat


RACE-DAY CANCELLATION, RACE ALTERATION POLICY AND WEATHER POLICY, CONTINUED stress index characterizing the effect of a heat stress environment on the individual.” WBGT was developed because the drybulb temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat, inasmuch as it does not take humidity and heat radiation into consideration. WBGT is so-called because two of its input variables are wet-bulb temperature and a “black-globe” temperature; the third variable is the shielded dry-bulb temperature. The result of the WBGT will be indicated on a flag system that will be displayed at the start and finish area as well as at the medical stations along the race course. The flag color will indicate the safety conditions based on the WBGT readings. They are listed in the table below. At the starting line there will be a banner over the street. Suspended from that banner will be two flags, each 2'x3'. The flag color will reflect the heat stress at that moment. Medical aid tents will be stationed along the course. Each medical aid station will be flying a flag of a color corresponding to the heat stress at that time. The flag colors will change within 15 minutes of a change in the heat stress level. The staff at the aid station will know the meaning of each color flag.

Extreme conditions that are high risk already place a burden on community health care systems, including emergency medical transportation, as well as hospital emergency room capacity. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will not knowingly place the community in any such position that will place burden on overall community safety. The Williams Route 66 Marathon asserts that each participant assumes responsibility when entering an event with the potential risks that a marathon presents. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the Marathon and associated events. Furthermore, it strongly advises all participants to cooperate with directives given by Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and to assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when conditions are less than ideal. As the WBGT lowers in cold weather and EAS alerts go to yellow and/or red, it is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of hypothermia when conditions warrant.

BEST PLACES TO WATCH Everyone can be a part of the race-day excitement by choosing the perfect spot along the course to cheer for their favorite racer. And, since nothing gives racers a bigger energy boost than being cheered on along the way, you’ll want to figure out the best place(s) to spot your runner. With the finish line located at Guthrie Green in The Brady Arts District, fans will enjoy lining the District’s streets from First Street, through the Center of the Universe Detour, along Archer Street near Boulder Avenue to Cameron Street to see racers approach the finish line. This year’s finish line party at Guthrie Green, presented by the University of Tulsa, will be one for the ages. Post-race festivities will include great music from the Guthrie Green stage, food offerings from Tulsa’s tastiest food trucks, a car show, as well as plenty of other sights and sounds for all ages that include the broad range of Brady Arts District businesses that will be open and ready to serve racers and fans. For those looking to get out on the course to cheer, options abound for grabbing a cup of coffee, a bite to eat, or even a festive beverage while you settle in for a great day of road racing. Suggested cheering locations along the various courses are below. Please make note of street closures. We encourage fans to be respectful of area businesses and residents when choosing parking spaces and cheering locations.

ON THE MARATHON AND HALF-MARATHON COURSE: You can feel the electricity in the air as racers gather before the starting gun. Hear the national anthem and the see the confetti fly as participants begin their journey at the start line at Seventh and Main Streets.

Cheer on your participant at Cascia Hall Preparatory School, near 25th Street and Yorktown and Utica Avenues, or Woodward Park at 21st Street and Peoria Avenue, for a truly beautiful fall racing experience. A perennial favorite among locals and visitors is Tulsa’s Brookside area located on Peoria Avenue between 33rd and 39th Streets. There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and the like to ply you with whatever you need to get your pipes warmed up to cheer for your participant.

ON THE MARATHON COURSE (MILES 13–25.5): If a little weekend brunch with a super-hip vibe to match is what you’re looking for, you’re in luck with several excellent spots to choose from. Come to Tulsa’s Blue Dome District on First and Second Streets between Detroit and Frankfort Avenues, the East Village, located near Lansing & Kenosha between Second & Sixth Streets, the burgeoning Pearl District, near Sixth and Peoria Avenue, or the always popular Cherry Street area on 15th Street between Peoria and Utica Avenues, to spot your marathoner and take in the day with a tasty bite, great drink options and swanky environs to keep your day party rolling. The University of Tulsa, especially ‘The U’, located near 11th Street and Tucker Drive, is another favorite cheering location offering fans ample parking and excellent vantage points to spot their favorite marathoners as they hit the all-important 20-mile mark and head toward the finish line. NEWFOUND balance. For years, Williams employee Diane struggled to manage her health and her busy schedule. “I considered myself a workaholic,” Diane says. “I was constantly stressed. I signed up for all kinds of fitness programs to help relieve some stress, but ended up being more stressed.” In 2011 she decided to take control. Diane has taken great strides to improve her well-being. To date, she’s completed seven half marathons, including the Williams Route 66 half marathon, and the Tulsa Run. She’s ready to jump back on the Williams Route 66 half marathon course and hopes to beat her previous race time. Best of luck to Diane and all participants in the Williams Route 66 events.
