ANN UAL REPORT 2025

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Our team at Geneva Benefits Group is deeply thankful for the privilege of serving nearly 12,000 ministry leaders with retirement, insurance, and wellbeing services across our denomination. For the past 52 years, we have been committed to stewarding this ministry to care for church leaders, workers, and families so they can focus on their callings and live generously in every season of ministry.

2025 has been a tremendous year of growth for our organization, and we give thanks to the Lord for all of it.

In March of 2025, our Board of Directors approved a strategic decision to move to a new recordkeeper for our retirement plan. A recordkeeper is essentially the plan’s bookkeeper, helping us maintain accurate records of your contributions and distributions. The decision to move from our previous recordkeeper, NWPS, to Fidelity was a significant one. It allows us to better serve ministry staff and employers. Geneva continues to manage and administer the plan, ensuring your investments align with our biblical convictions and work toward your retirement goals. Our team continues to provide world-class benefit services and one-on-one retirement planning through our financial planning advisors, who are also experienced pastors. We understand the complexities of ministry finances and the challenges of ministry life. We are here to support your holistic wellbeing every step of the way.

This past year, we also launched pastoral wellbeing cohorts—safe, healing spaces where pastors receive care from other pastors. These small groups gather for retreats and monthly Zoom meetings with the goal of providing rest, renewal, and encouragement. We believe the gospel advances and the church thrives when those who are called to shepherd Christ’s sheep are well supported themselves.

Lastly, we continued to care for PCA ministry families through the Relief Fund. The Relief Fund exists to support pastors and their widows in times of crisis. This year, your gifts to the Relief Fund provided financial assistance to dozens of retired pastors and widows. Widows like Crystal, who, after the sudden loss of her husband, receives monthly support through the Relief Fund. Through your generosity, we distributed $718,938 in support of PCA ministry leaders and their families. What a blessing it is to be able to care for those who faithfully serve our churches!

As you review our services and outcomes from the past year, please know how grateful we are for the trust you have put in Geneva. We are thankful for your work on behalf of our Savior and pray for you regularly. Our team is eager to serve and support you and your family with excellence, care, and compassion, so that you can live generously and lead faithfully in every season of ministry.

OUR MISSION

At Geneva, our mission is clear: To support the wellbeing of ministry leaders, workers, and their families, so they can live generously in every season of ministry. Our staff consists of PCA pastors, ruling elders, and a team of others who are actively involved in local church ministry. We can say with confidence, “We know you.”

EMOTIONAL HEALTH

We provide wellbeing services to support ministry workers so they can thrive in every season of ministry. In 2025, we expanded our resources to help ministry leaders navigate the complexities of pastoral life by launching pastoral cohorts and expanding sabbatical programs.

Pastoral Wellbeing Cohorts

This year, we launched three pastoral wellbeing cohorts serving 18 pastors. These small, guided groups create confidential spaces for ministry leaders to process grief, discouragement, fatigue, calling, and hope alongside trusted peers. For many, the experience has been transformative.

A healthy church requires healthy ministry workers.”

Rev. Paul Joiner, Assistant Vice President of Wellbeing

One of the things that was so meaningful for me was having a group of guys who could grieve and lament together in a way that you felt very seen and heard… We’ve been the presence of Jesus to one another—it’s been very powerful. It’s been incredibly dignifying. The things that I feel matter, and, even as a leader called to shepherd others, I never get past needing to be shepherded.”

Sabbatical Matching Grants

Rest remains essential for sustainable ministry. From 2022 to 2024, Geneva granted a total of 32 matching sabbatical grants to under-resourced churches. In 2025, we continued our Ministerial Wellbeing Sabbatical Matching Program and provided $109,850 in matching funds to 15 under-resourced churches, alleviating the financial burden often associated with sabbaticals and enabling congregations to invest in the long-term well-being of their pastors, benefiting not only the pastors and their families but also the entire church community.

Every encounter and interaction I’ve ever had with Geneva has done nothing but continually bless me. I wish I could give all of you a hug and let you know how sustaining you have been in my life.”

What’s Next?

In 2026, we will launch 2 additional cohorts that will serve 9 more pastors, expanding this circle of care and strengthening the emotional resilience of ministry leaders across the country. In addition, we are committed to serving an additional 17 churches with sabbatical matching grants, ensuring more pastors experience meaningful rest before crisis or burnout forces it.

We are able to expand upon these programs in large part thanks to a $1 million scaling grant from Lilly Endowment’s initiative to address Economic Challenges Facing Pastoral Leaders (ECFPL).

The grant will allow Geneva to expand and strengthen these proven initiatives, focusing on broader access for historically under-resourced churches, deeper impact, and long-term sustainability.

THE RELIEF FUND

As we seek to care for ministry leaders holistically, we must confront a sobering reality: the spiritual weight of ministry is often compounded by significant financial strain. Many pastors faithfully serve for decades on modest incomes, leaving little margin for long-term savings or unexpected hardship. In 2011, research conducted by PWC on the retirement readiness revealed that 70% of PCA pastors are not confident they have enough savings for retirement. At the same time, the emotional toll is mounting with 25% of pastors nationwide reporting being chronically burned out with another 25% dangerously close1 .

Adding to this urgency, within the next five years, the number of pastors nearing retirement and widows in need of support is projected to double. At the Relief Fund, we are often called into the most difficult chapters of our denominational families’ lives. Whether it’s a sudden injury, the unexpected loss of a spouse, or the financial strain that comes when retirement savings fall short—these are the times when hope feels distant, and the Relief Fund becomes a lifeline.

You often don’t know the struggles and trials your pastor, his family, and other ministry workers endure. They often put on a great public face while having many internal struggles and weariness in the ups and downs of hard ministry work. Being able to provide relief is essential for helping those who serve the Lord openly and, in their calling, when they have extraordinary need.” — Relief Fund Monthly Supporter

Financial Assistance

The Relief Fund provides financial assistance to PCA pastors, widows, and ministry workers facing severe hardship, helping them meet their basic needs during difficult seasons.

The Relief Fund offers monthly assistance for recurring living expenses like groceries, utilities, and medical bills. For unexpected emergencies, general assistance provides one-time or short-term support to cover costs such as medical expenses or funeral bills. The Relief Fund also provides a one-time, $1,000 payment to surviving spouses upon their partner’s death and offers health insurance assistance to families of pastors between ministry calls.

Counseling Services

Cherish is a counseling ministry for wives of PCA pastors. According to a 2018 survey facilitated by Geneva, eight out of ten pastors’ wives reported that they would access Christian counseling if provided with it. Cherish provides free and discounted, confidential counseling sessions with a Christian counselor.

Being a pastor’s wife is a uniquely challenging role in the church. Thank you for lifting the burden through your financial support to Cherish! Your contribution has a ripple effect that can result in healthier women who can pour into their husbands, children, and church communities, thereby enabling the Gospel to flourish.”

IMPACT STORIES

Serve Faithfully, Steward Wisely

REV. TIMOTHY SIN’S JOURNEY TO FINANCIAL WELLNESS WITH GENEVA

Rev. Timothy Sin believed that trusting in God’s provision meant that he didn’t need to budget or financially plan. He recalls thinking, “He’ll always provide no matter how I spend my money.” But after graduating from seminary, being ordained, and getting married all in the same year, reality set in. Between student loans, a mortgage, supporting two young children, and credit card debts, Timothy and his wife found themselves struggling under a substantial financial burden. “We were in a significant amount of debt,” Timothy admits.

I was trying to become more financially aware, but I felt overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start.”

That’s when Financial Planning Advisor, Paul Chi, reached out. Paul explained that Geneva offers comprehensive financial advising as a 100% free service to pastors and ministry workers. Drawing from his own experience as a pastor and training as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, Paul understood the complexity of retirement readiness, financial wellness, and compensation packages that Timothy and other ministers face. Pastors often navigate the tension between advocating for adequate compensation and the fears of being perceived as greedy.

Paul started by helping Timothy and his wife face their financial reality without shame. Together, they created a comprehensive picture of their finances, breaking down every expense, creating a realistic budget, and developing steps toward financial wellness.

This framework helped Timothy and his wife build a plan, and they were able to start practicing intentional stewardship of the resources the Lord had provided. Timothy and his wife were able to budget wisely, as well as use a stimulus package and a pay increase to strategically pay down their debts. They also began contributing to their retirement, taking the first steps toward long-term financial wellness.

Timothy emphasizes the importance of seeing financial stewardship itself as an act of worship. “It’s the responsible thing to do—to be very cognizant and aware of how you’re spending and what you’re saving.”

“If other people could utilize these services, I think it’d be tremendous,” Timothy says. His hope is that other pastors will find what he didn’t know for years–that you don’t have to navigate financial planning alone.

Crystal’s Story

HOW THE CHURCH SURROUNDED A PASTOR’S WIDOW IN CRISIS

Crystal knows firsthand the weight of loss. Her first husband abandoned her, leaving her to raise five children on her own. Dan, a PCA pastor, had also endured deep sorrow after losing his first wife to cancer. When God brought Crystal and Dan together, they sought to rebuild a life marked by hope.

In 2018, Dan and Crystal moved to North Carolina, where Dan had accepted a call to pastor Harvest Presbyterian Church.

But tragedy struck again: while preparing a sermon at the church, Dan died suddenly. “He was my best friend. Besides the Lord, Dan was my everything,” Crystal recalls.

With no income, Crystal was left with almost nothing. On top of her grief, she now faced the overwhelming burden of paying rent and bills. In a season marked by uncertainty, financial burdens added to the weight she carried.

She applied for disability and Medicare but was unable to get either. “With Dan being gone, I would have had nothing. I wouldn’t even know where to go.” She was being supported by her sons and Harvest Presbyterian until a local pastor and one of her elders told her about the Relief Fund.

“When one of my elders told me about Ministerial Relief, I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock and stunned by it. I applied and started receiving financial assistance within a month. It is truly the Lord caring for me through this ministry... I’ve been able to pay my rent, bills, and get food. I’ve been able to go to sleep at night knowing I was taken care of, even though I don’t have my best friend and my pastor beside me.”

The ministry leaders who serve our churches are often unprepared for these moments of distress. The Relief Fund was created to step in and answer the call for PCA pastors, their families, and their widows in times of distress by providing temporary financial assistance to overcome unexpected obstacles and fill the financial gaps many face in retirement.

Crystal’s story reminds us that caring for widows and ministers is a church-wide calling. Together, we can help provide for widows and ministers in need.

LOOKING FORWARD

We began 2025 with a clear and ambitious set of organizational goals designed to strengthen Geneva’s capacity to serve ministry leaders and their families. Over the past year, we completed several major initiatives that position Geneva for long-term growth and greater impact in 2026.

#1 Transitioned Recordkeeper to Fidelity Investments

This transition improves in-person customer service, enhances the online experience, heightens cybersecurity, and reduces fees for participants. For church administrators, benefits include resources to more easily remit and track contributions, extended call center hours, and reporting to assess the retirement readiness of employees. By partnering with Fidelity, retirement plan participants gain greater access to the tools and resources they need to set themselves up for financial success well beyond their working years.

#2 Launched Pastoral Wellbeing Cohorts

In alignment with our mission of providing holistic wellbeing resources to pastors, we began facilitating pastoral cohorts to help pastors thrive on the long road of ministry. These cohorts give our church leaders the opportunity to build supportive relationships, develop rhythms of rest and renewal, and navigate leadership challenges together. In 2026, we will be launching two new cohorts, which will serve an additional nine pastors.

#3 Completed Organizational Realignment

We have experienced substantial growth over the past five years, resulting in numerous advancements in processing and customer service. These organizational changes are designed to support our sustained, strong growth and underscore Geneva’s commitment to delivering exceptional service and long-term stability to our growing client base.

#4 Initiated a Transition to the Salesforce Platform as our CRM

To enhance how we serve clients and donors, we began implementing Salesforce as our new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. This investment will allow us to improve communication, deepen relationships, and respond more effectively to the needs of those we serve.

These outcomes represent more than operational improvements. They are strategic investments in our mission. The progress made in 2025 demonstrates the Lord’s provision and the faithful partnership of churches, donors, and ministry leaders. As we look ahead, we remain committed to strengthening Geneva’s capacity so that pastors and ministry leaders can live generously in every season of ministry.
