AgreatweekendoffellowshipwashadbyallGeorge30arrivedin forceonFridayafternoon.Tablersand41ersalike.Fridaynightwasa relaxedwelcomingeveningwhereabraaiandrefreshmentswere enjoyed.
Saturdaymorningwasafreshstartwithbrekkiebunsfollowedbya tripintothebushtoenjoyoursurrounds.

InRoundTableSouthernAfrica,thereexistafewunavoidabletruths:thebirthof41ers,the arrivalofCAPFeedeadlines,andtheindispensableroleoftheTableSecretary.
Whilethefirsttwomayevokeexistentialdread,theriskoftakingonthelatteroftentriggers full-scalecollectivemigrationawayfromaTablemeeting.Afterall,whowantstobetheone saddledwithtakingminutes,sendingreminders,andgenerally‘herdingcats’(akafellow Tablers)?
TheTableSecretary'sresponsibilitiesextendfarbeyondsimplytakingnotes Amidstthelivelydiscussionsandoccasionaltangentsofmeetings,theymustdistilthechaos intocoherentminutes,capturingtheessenceofconversationswithoutsuccumbingto editorialisingtemptations.
Beyondthat,theymustactastheTable'scollectivememory,remindingeveryoneof upcomingevents,forgottendeadlines,andlong-lostactionitems.
ThegoodSecretarymustalsopossessauniqueabilitytobreathelifeintoaTable'scalendar, conjuringorderfromthechaosofconflictingschedulesandlast-minutecancellations.It'slike herdingcats,butwithadultcalendarsandatalentforprocrastinationthrownintothemix.
Let'salsonotforgetthelessglamoroustaskofarchivingTablerecords.WhilenotPulitzer Prizematerial,thesedustyfilespreventtherepetitionofpastmistakes(andquestionable choices),makingtheSecretaryanunsungheroofhistoricalpreservation.
WhiletheirfellowTablersbaskinthegloryofsuccessfulprojects,thebestSecretaries(and theydon’tallgetitright)labourdiligentlybehindthescenes,theircontributionsoften overlooked
Theirreward?Alukewarmcupofcoffeeandthefainthopethattheireffortswon'tbeentirely forgotten.Yet,theypersevere,understandingthecrucialroletheyplayintheTable'ssmooth functioning.
TheTableSecretaryisvitaltoanyTable'ssurvival.
Likealighthousekeeperamongstastormyseaofagendasandminutes,theymustdiligently recordtheramblingsanddecisionsoftheirpeers,ensuringnobrilliantideaorcatastrophic blunderislosttotime.
Withoutthem,meetingswoulddescendintoanarchy,deadlineswouldbemissed,andthe Associationwouldgrindtoahalt.Theirnotesandgentleremindersarethegluethatholds everythingtogether
So,nexttimeyouencounteryourTableSecretary,offerawordofthanks,asympathetic smile,orasacrificialofferingofcoffeeandpastries.

Havingbeenatlastyear'swinterconference,Ialreadyknewyouguyshadaknackformaking onefeelrightathome,andthistimewasnodifferent.
Thisyear,wethought,whynotstretchthefunabitlonger?So,weaddedonanextradayand headedtothehomeof“DieWildsFees,”wheretheKirkwood78legendsalmostliterary rolledouttheredcarpet.ThankstotheEPArea’sViceChairman,weenjoyedabitofhunting foragoodcause,hadsomesolidfellowship,andeventriedourhandatgongshooting followed,ofcourse,byatop-notchvintageofRichelieu.JoiningtheKirkwoodteamfortheir businessmeetingwasahonourandaprivilegetoo.It’sclearthey’vegottheircommunity’s bestinterestsatheart BigcheerstotheMannevanKirkwoodforthewarmwelcome!
FridaysawusmakingourwaytoGqeberha,wheresomeoftheOOOP’sheavyhittersgreeted usforalegendarystarttotheOPwinterconatBarney’sTavern.Thenightdidn’tendthere, though—wemovedthepartytotheAlgoa108clubhousefortheEPWintercon.Onceagain, thecamaraderiewasoffthecharts,withTablersfromallwalksoflifesharingstoriesand laughsoveranothergreatvintageofRichelieu.The“aankomsaggressie”hithard,andthe festivitiescarriedonwellintothenight.
Saturdaybroughtusalltogetherforthemainevent.Themeetinghadagreatturnout,evenif thespacewasabitsnug-proofthat“Baiemakskapepasin’nkraal.”JacquesGrootvoelVan Wyk ran a tight ship, keeping things interesting throughout. The sergeant Mr Wayne Stevensonhimselfalsoensuredabsoluteorderinthemeetingwithspreadoftreatsthatis probably not fit for human consumprion, (no Tablers was seriously harmed during the meeting)
Thecelebrityspeakerwasahit,theAimsandObjectiveswereonpoint,anditwasawesome toseeeveryonegivenachancetospeakupandsharewhat’sontheirmind.It’ssoimportant thateveryTablerhasasayinthedirectionwe’reheading.
Totopitalloff,weditchedtheusualWinterconattirefor somethingabitfanciertocelebrateAlgoa108’s60th birthday.
Itwasaspecialnight,lookingbackonsixdecadesof makingarealdifferenceinthePortElizabethcommunity

Inanefforttosupportthefutureoflocalyouth,LadiesCircle29,inpartnershipwiththe EasternCapeDepartmentofEducation,organizedtwosuccessfulsubjectchoiceandcareer guidancepresentationsforgrade9studentsatKuyasaCombinedandNomzamoSenior SecondarySchool.Theeventswerewell-receivedandaimedtoassiststudentsinmaking informeddecisionsabouttheireducationalpathsandfuturecareers.
Heldonthe03rdand6thofSeptember,thepresentationswereattendedbytheHeadofthe DepartmentofEducation,schoolstaffandmembersofLadiesCircle29.Theprogramwas designedtoprovidestudentswithessentialinformationregardingavailablesubjectsand potentialcareeroptions,enablingthemtomakeeducatedchoicesthatalignwiththeir interestsandaspirations.
