In its beginnings, due to the sheer number of staff at Rotecna, all the essential human resources functions were carried out from an agency. In 1998, with the expansion of the enterprise, the human resources department was established so that all this work could be done internally, and therefore its competences expanded.

The 6th of January is a day much awaited by many, as it is when the arrival of the Three Wise Men is celebrated. Entire families gather to receive the presents that their

majesties have brought them from the far East. To sweeten this celebration, even more, the “Roscón de Reyes”, the most typical dessert of “Three Kings Day”, is served.

It is a sweet dough roll decorated with slices of frosted fruit and is commonly filled with cream or chocolate. Within, various surprises are added. This delicacy is exemplary

of several provinces of Spain, although it can also be found in Portugal, Mexico and Argentina.

Origin of the tradition This luscious dessert every year becomes the undisputed protagonist of the after-supper of the 6th of January. Still, its origins have nothing to do with the birth of Jesus and the appearance of the Three Wise Men at the Bethlehem Gate.

To find its exact origin, one would have to travel back to the 2nd century B.C. It was then in the middle of December, after finishing the work in the fields, some pagan festivities known as the Saturnals (in honour of Saturn, the god of agriculture and crops) honoured the end of the gloomiest time of the year and the onset of light.

The Saturnals were a time of festivity and recreation in which slaves were relieved from any task. Among the

ROTECNANEWS alternative tasks as well, displaying a clear commitment to excellence and security. As a result, it was settled to focus on crucial aspects such as the prevention of occupational hazards and the training of employees.

In 2016, the safety committee was set up, holding monthly sessions to evaluate the application of the proposed changes by the committee members or the workers. Due to this will to improve the firm, and with better awareness displayed by the staff, the number of accidents has been reduced in recent years.

As long as training, in addition to the instruction given to all employees (immediately relevant to the task they perform in the company), training is also given to people who change departments to enhance some aspect of their duties. This is initiated at the request of the various department managers and according to their distinct demands.

Expansion of the team The constant expansion of Rotecna and the exceeding of 180 employees in 2015, supposed the incorporation of Dolors Cabanillas to the department until then run by Sònia Cano. Dolors thus takes care of the administrative

part and the employee selection, and Sònia issues related to safety, training, personnel costs evaluation, accidents indicators, absenteeism and public relations with businesses.

At first, everything was done manually, even attendance management. Recently, with the including of modern technologies, some tasks have successfully been computerised, and information of considerable statistical value can now be generated for the department. Along these lines, finished June the Presence program was supplanted, which once 100% implemented, will boost tasks such as the control of absences, personnel entries and exits, etc.. that until now were handled manually through Excel sheets. In a nutshell, the present human resources department now provides a better comprehensive viewpoint on the company staff, consistently in aims of enhancing the operation of the company.

Challenges Intending to continue professionalising the department in parallel with the expansion of the company, the future requires implementing reforms in remuneration schemes, career plans and competence management, that

On the other hand, work is also being done on a better Welcome Plan for new employees, so that they feel accompanied in their initial days of work. The implementation of an equality policy is likewise in motion, intending to equalise working conditions and remuneration of employees, ensuring fairness in areas such as selection, promotion and training. Last but not least, the initiative is also set to improve work-life balance and to deal with possible cases of sexual harassment or discriminatory speech.

With now 17 years in the company, Sònia came to Rotecna at 23 and with minimal job background, but with the spirit and enthusiasm of a young person who does not shy from new challenges, took over the management of a vital department such as Human Resources. Presently, at a company that has doubled its number of employees, the experience is her best weapon to confront future projects. “Dealing with employees is what I prefer most about working at Rotecna”, explains Sònia.

It is believed that it was in the 3rd century A.D. that the famous bean was introduced. The bean, in that era, thought to be an emblem of prosperity and fertility, promised those who found it well-being for the rest of the year.

When the XVIII century arrived, a cook who wished to please the French king Louis XV, introduced a gold coin as a surprise in the cake. From that point on, the coin acquired more symbolic importance than the bean, becoming the most desired prize.

When the Christian religion was established as the official religion in the Roman Empire, pagan celebrations, such as the Saturnal ones, faded. Despite this, customs such as the cake containing a bean (which with time, has taken the shape of a ring) have been upheld.

The tradition of the Three Wise Men’s cake came to Spain through the repatriated soldiers from Flanders and became popular with the reign of Philip V.

Although nowadays we have restored that ancient tradition, some details have evolved. The most noticeable one is that now gold coins are no longer used but instead, a ceramic or plastic figure of one of the Three Wise Men. Over time, the bean, which was originally a token of prosperity, has also acquired a negative significance.

Some sources point out that, for a time, the custom of including a bean disappeared, reappearing again in the mid-nineteenth century. It was thus that the traditional date of Three Wise Men’s Day was appointed to

MULTIPHASE FEED CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A GRADUAL TRANSITION BETWEEN FEEDS THAT AVOIDS DIGESTIVE TROUBLES IN PIGLETS

Zinc oxide limitation in swine feed, enforced by the European Commission from 2022, causes uncertainty in the sector on how to handle the issues of animal adaptation and the appearance of diarrhoea, with the subsequent mortality rise. These issues ordinarily derive from feed changes among piglets during the process of adaptation to solid feed and whose regularity was until now was minimised with this supplement.

Faced with this challenge, Rotecna has designed the Evofeed multiphase feed control system, which eases the steady transition from one feed to another by blending them, therefore improving adaptation and reducing digestive complications.

TECHNOLOGY

ADVANTAGES: • Favours an appropriate adaptation of the piglets, which increases their growth and reduces shrinkage due to low yield, diarrhoea and subsequent mortality.

• The feed curves automation and blends in feed changes saves time and workforce and avoids the inaccuracies of performing it manually.

• There is no fodder waste.

• The fodder mixture is homogeneous so as not to precipitate sudden imbalances in the intestinal flora nor harm the average daily expenditure by administering a too sudden variation in the nutritional level.

At weaning, piglets have to readjust to solid feed, and their nutritional requirements may differ due to their weight increase. Therefore they are fed with up to 4 different types of feed, of varying composition. To provide a correct transition between each one of them enhances the animals’ adaptation, assures an optimal growth and reduces the possibility of diarrhoeas appearing; it also minimises losses by low yield and an increase of the fatality percentage.

Evofeed: How does it work?

• Automatic multiphase feeding system with a sensible and straightforward method.

• No scales or pneumatic valves required.

The Evofeed multiphase feed control system handles the pace of the feed delivery system motors from the silo of each feed to the system that dispenses them in the room. This allows managing the volume itself of the feed that is allocated from each feed to the animals and, in the flow from one type of feed to another, generate mixtures that progressively lessen the ratio of feed to be removed and increase the percentage of feed to be introduced. Besides, it makes it possible to regulate the quantity of each feed dispensed by each room’s system, thereby obtaining a more significant control over the animals’ utilisation and evolution.

The computerisation of the weaning feed signifies essential savings in time and labour, as it avoids the farmer having to go through the corrals daily and mix the feed manually.

• The fodder flows through separate lines until it enters the room. This is why the fodder mixture is made in the room itself, avoiding excess.

• It is not necessary to predict the expenditure of each type of fodder per room.

• Automatic and homogeneous mixing of the different fodder.

• It only dispenses food in places with animals.

• It regulates the output of feed given.

• It will enable applying different curves adapted to the demands of the animals in each room according to age, size, gender.

There is a touch screen with a straightforward and intuitive operating system to configure, regulate and monitor the feed, where the farmer activates the room in which the piglets enter, specifying the number of animals and their age. One can also configure which days the shifts in the type of feed should take place. The system then stores all this data to speed up future entries. Additionally, the touch screen also allows one to examine the speed of the motors, the programmed feeding curves in each room and to control piglet decease. And lastly, there are also functions to modify some basic parameters like the increase/reduction of the quantity of feed to be dispensed per room corresponding to the animals’ development.

AITOR INIESTA: “WITH PHASE II, WE REDUCE AROUND 70% OF N, 97% OF P AND 60% OF K FROM THE INITIAL SLURRY” The 3,000 sow farm located in Utiel (Valencia) has equipped a slurry treatment plant with the TecnaPur mechanical separator and physicochemical reactor.

As a descendant of a household devoted to cattle rearing, Aitor Iniesta decided to continue with the family business. However, fascinated by the greater complexity illustrated in the reproductive stage of sows, he chose to be trained in this field and run his own sows farm. Convinced of the need to build an environmentally sustainable sector, in 2019 Aitor has invested in the establishment and set up of a slurry treatment plant, which operates the TecnaPur mechanical separator (Phase I) and physicochemical reactor (Phase II), with outstanding results. After specialising in swine breeding, in 2011 he resolved to set up his breeding farm with 1,000 sows which, after only three years, was able to expand to 3,000, with 13,000 weaning places with piglets of up to 20 kilos.

How is the farm distributed?

In one section I have the core of breeders with 3,000 sows, with replacement (which we do internally in the farm), gestation and maternity wards where we have piglets up to 6 kilos (26 days of life). Besides, about 3.5 kilometres away, we have the weaning/transition section of up to 20 kilos.

Once they have reached this weight, we distribute the animals to fattening farms: one part goes to the family farm, with 7,000 places, and the rest to other farms of the integrator with whom we work.

This year you decided to install the TecnaPur slurry treatment system, with the mechanical separator and the physicochemical reactor.

Why? Mainly because of a personal principle to have an environmentally friendly farm. Although we do not presently have any complications with slurry because we are in an area with low pig density, I believe that for the livestock and pig production to move forward one must invest to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Why did you choose the Rotecna system?

I had been looking for a facility that would allow me to enhance nitrogen management, reduce ammonia emissions and the odours that the farm might generate, even though it is far from any metropolitan centre. Therefore, we considered a couple of options and Rotecna, regarding economic viability and functionality, was the one that best fit our purposes. Thus, in April, we equipped the plant,

Finally, after the first few months, with the advice and support of Rotecna’s technicians, in September, I began to manage the operation of the entire plant myself.

What has the plant performance been in these first few months?

So far the results are remarkably favourable, as I foresaw: reduction of odours and volume, segregation of nutrients, savings in the cost of extending the slurry, decrease in ammonia emissions, obtaining a quality organic fertiliser for our fields from the solids section. We, as well as breeders, are farmers, so the manure we take out of the slurry is used in our fields as an organic complement; it is a much higher quality organic fertiliser than the synthetic or mineral fertiliser that is ordinarily employed. Now, the next test I want to perform is to use the liquid part for fertigation in adjacent plots. The truth is that this plant offers a broad range of possibilities which, from an environmental perspective, we believe is the model to follow for the future of livestock farming.

What would you highlight about the operation of the physicochemical reactor?

It is a wonderfully intuitive system and suited to any user profile. In our case, we utilise the reactor from Monday to Friday, about ten/eleven hours a day, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. In this way, on Monday morning, we prepare the flocculant tank, so that once full, we can let the liquid phase that comes out of the mechanical separator transfer into the reactor. With this very simple start-up, automatically and according to the inlet flow, the reactor starts to work. Then, the only thing we usually do is that every two hours, one of the people who is out dealing with the slurry checks that everything is working correctly.

In any case, the safety systems installed in the machine imply that an incident or the end of a chemical product would make the plant stop.

Finally, on Fridays, at the end of the week, the flocculant tank must be emptied, and the machine cleaned.

The reactor offers the possibility of remote control; what do you think?

A success. Furthermore, it has a very intuitive administration for anyone moderately versed in new technologies. Specifically, the remote control of the reactor allows me to check on my mobile phone from anywhere and in real-time. I can see what state the machine is in if there is any incident, any alarm, monitor how the system is working, how many cubic meters are entering and what the pH level of the slurry coming out is. You can review absolutely everything, wherever you are. It’s a tremendous advantage that also helps you reconcile work and family life.

In numbers, how many cubic metres of slurry do you treat per day?

With an average running time of approximately 11 hours, between 60 and 70 cubic metres of slurry can be processed per day, depending on how dense it is.

And as for the initial volume, what percentage do you get from each portion?

On the farm, we are very mindful of the sensible use of water; every day, the maintenance person checks consumption and checks for possible leaks, so we have a reasonably dense slurry. From there, with the first phase of TecnaPur (mechanical separator) we have a reduction involving the initial volume of 10% that comes out with the solid part, and 90% goes to the liquid portion. Later, in phase 2 (physicochemical reactor), we achieve a solid part

Composition of the liquid phase

of approximately 20-30% and a liquid fraction of 70-80%. As a result, we can reduce nitrogen around 70%, potassium 60% and phosphorus 97% from the initial slurry to the final slurry, with no emissions of ammonia or any other greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

What do you do with each of the separate parts?

We use the solid part for the vineyard fertiliser, which is the prevalent crop in the area, providing plants with more sustainable and ecological

nutrients than the synthetic and mineral fertilisers that are customarily employed. And we use the liquid part to fertilise almonds mainly, as well as dry cereals. In this sense, having separated the majority of solids in suspension from the slurry, the amount of cubic meters that we can apply per hectare increases by 70%, and the amount of total liquid to be transported is reduced by 33%. This means a significant reduction in the extension of crops needed to manage the liquid fertiliser and significant savings in transport.

At the farming level, what is the cost per cubic metre of separation?

We do not have an accurate estimate of all the costs. Still, the estimation we have done gives us an approximate price of about 2 to 5 euros per cubic meter in the processing, to which the cost of distributing the product in liquid to spread on farms or for use in drip irrigation should be added as well.

As a result, since we can deliver more per hectare and less quantity in total, it is possible to do it closer to the farm, which considerably reduces application costs; therefore, the total cost of the treatment plus the application is calculated to be around 2.3 - 2.8 euros/m3.

Is the financial perspective favourable?

Regarding the costs before separation, yes. Initially, a small extra cost is expected when investing, but then you have a yield on the fertiliser that you are generating with the solid part. However, previously we had costs of 20,000 euros per year for our properties. Now we are saving that, and if we manage to have a surplus of fertiliser, we could sell it and obtain a monetary benefit. Therefore, the extra cost that the plant can generate for the treatment of the slurry is justified and covered by the income that can be obtained from the organic fertiliser and the savings in the transport of the liquid phase. This is because we have to spread less and when we do, its closer. From my point of view, this investment is justified. What is more, we are emphasising the importance all farmers become aware of the need to produce in such an environmentally friendly way.

A thriving business The surge in imports, the opening of new markets and the growth in pork consumption have led Costa Rica’s pork sector to expand towards a more ambitious and technical industry. According to the latest agricultural census, there are about 14,600 pig farms in Costa Rica, with about 400,000 pigs.

Of these ranches, over 82% are small farms with fewer than ten pigs; the rest are larger-scale farms, which produce 80% of the country’s pork.

Current trends Over the last few years, Costa Rica’s pork sector has been expanding the size of its farms. This growth has led to more substantial commercial and technological efforts on the part of the country’s pig farmers. A clear example of “technification” can be seen in the investments made by many farmers to improve their animals’ genetics, with a bet on superior genetics that leads to producing higher quality meat. This improvement can be seen by the

This situation has led many pig farmers to petition for actions against imports because of the high costs of local production.

Biosafety, a priority Costa Rica was formally recognised as a classical swine fever (CSF) free country at the 86th World Assembly of Delegates of the World Organization for Animal Health in 2018. This recognition gives the country an official sanitary status, thanks to the fact that the disease does not exist in the country and the conditions for legislation, veterinary services, control and eradication strategy, animal

identification system, movement control and laboratory diagnosis, among others, have been met.

However, pig producers in Costa Rica and the rest of the Central American region are not dropping their guard and, in the last year, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture has reinforced sanitary regulations to ward off the appearance of African swine fever (ASF) in the American continent. Sanitary controls at borders, manipulation of food waste from aeroplanes and ships, attention to clinical signs of pigs on farms for possible reports to official health services, and increased biosecurity measures have been emphasised.
