At this time, after the success and interest generated by the novelties presented at EuroTier in November, we assess the year we are about to finish positively. The good reception of the wide range of Rotecna products impels us to continue facing the challenges in the sector. Among the 27 novelties that we presented at the world reference fair for the porcine sector, I would like to highlight the interest generated by Phase II of the TecnaPur slurry treatment system, the physicochemical reactor, and the Silometric wireless level control system. We have also expanded our hopper family with two new solutions: the double TR3D dry hopper and the SF3D wean-to-finish hopper.

In the sector, the current situation in the market maintains the trend towards record prices and high activity in the slaughterhouses that was already visible last summer. This upward tendency led us to the highest slaughter numbers of the year during the last week of November.

However, in this context, we cannot forget the problem that most concerns the European Union after the recent outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in Belgium sounded the alarm. In the field of health, we cannot ignore the importance of hygiene on installations to maintain a perfect health status and reduce the use of antibiotics, a challenge that the sector is facing with professionalism.

In short, we ended the year with good feelings and the expectation that the sector will continue to grow in 2019. Our commitment is to continue working to respond to the needs of farmers and maintain our constant improvement.

Thus, Rotecna’s first marketing team emerged, and, little by little, it began to manage the communication and promotion of the brand and its products. Currently, the department has a good team that encourages collaboration between members.

Initially, the communication and marketing tasks of Rotecna were outsourced. It was in 1999 when, with the birth of the magazine Impuls d’Agramunt, it was decided to create the department by hiring a journalist and a graphic designer.

The tradition of making the Christmas tió defecate is linked to children. This character, also known as Christmas log, Cagatió or soca, is one of the main elements of the traditional Christmas celebrations in Catalonia.

It is a trunk, often decorated with legs and pieces that simulate a smiling face. This trunk “defecates” presents.

The Christmas Tió can be bought on stalls at Christmas Fairs, or made at home.

Normally it also wears a red hat, another of the elements of Catalan symbology, as we can see in the image.

We edit three publications The company currently publishes three magazines: Informativo Porcino (1996), a specialised publication aimed at professionals in the pig sector; Rotecna World (2000), designed to keep our distributors informed of the company’s activity, and Impuls d’Agramunt (1999), which symbolises the close relationship of the company with its close surrounding. All of them are available on paper and in digital format.

In the field of communication, we also manage the Rotecna website, which, apart from presenting information about the company and its products, offers valuable content for professionals in the sector with reports, interviews, studies, etc., that we post on the blog and share on social networks.

In this sense, the company’s marketing has evolved in parallel with the market trends, moving from Marketing 1.0 centred on the product, to Marketing 2.0 focused on the consumer, to progressing now towards Marketing 3.0 centred on values. Close communication through

e-mail marketing tools is one of the department’s activities that our customers value most positively, as it allows them to keep up to date with the company’s latest news, price lists, and access to such documents of commercial interest as manuals, technical files and catalogues.

Presence around the world The other great line of work of the department is to promote and position the brand on the market (branding) through participation in national and international fairs, congresses, technical conferences, etc., a presence that has been increasing from to year.

In in the first edition of the international benchmark for the sector, the EuroTier fair in Hannover (Germany), that we participated in, in 2004, we had a 90 square-metre stand. In the last edition this November we occupied 190 square metres. This is similar to our evolution in the national reference event, FIGAN in Saragossa, where we will expand our exhibition area to 400 square metres next year.

For the future, with the recent launch of the new website (www.rotecna. com), we are immersed in deploying our new digital marketing plan.

Òscar Toledano, marketing coordinator With a long history in sales, working for Rotecna since February 2001, Òscar Toledano joined the marketing department last May. His objective is always to foster a collaborative work environment. “We are a team and we manage the department together.

Marketing is to convey value, and this transmission is what I like the most” he explains. In this sense, such as

TIÓ The tradition This custom is to collect a heavy stump or thick branch days before Christmas, usually on the 8th of December, the day of the Immaculate Conception. It is kept somewhere in the house covered with a blanket so it does not feel cold. It is also fed every day until it is made to “cagar” or defecate.

There are homes where the tió is simply a piece of wood (one or more chairs, for example), a piece of cork, or a box, of different sizes appropriate for the presents it will have to defecate.

Then, on Christmas day, the children are is to beat the tió with a stick to make it defecate gifts, while singing a traditional song.

The origins Originally, the tió was a lit trunk from the fireplace that provided heat to withstand the harshness of winter and light the long nights. Traditionally,

it never defecated large gifts, as these were brought by the Kings of Orient. What it gave was candy, nativity figurines and some simple toys for the little ones, as well as food and drink for Christmas and Boxing Day, such as nougat, champagne, dried figs or mandarins.

Water is also given. The illusion of the boys and girls begins with find a place for it and leaving food for it.

Once fed, it is made to defecate on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, before or after the family meal.

However, nowadays, since most houses do not have a fireplace and this element has been lost, it is no longer lit.

Making the Tió defecate

The tió is a ritual of rural origin, and means abundance, an old and dry trunk giving sweet and sour cherries.

It is the auger of nature revival after the winter season.

When it’s time to make the Tió defecate, the children are usually sent to pray or sing carols in another room in the house. Then they return and beat it with sticks one by one or all together to the rhythm of the song or poem, of which there are many variations. This is repeated until the log does not “cagar” any more or it defecates something that says the presents have finished. This can be a salted herring, charcoal, garlic, onion or the Tió “urinates” on the floor.

Beating it with sticks has its origin in the action of stirring the logs in the fireplace to encourage the fire, with a stick or branch. Currently, beating the tió emulates the attempts to beat the trunks burning in the fireplace, since, in the past, the tió was made to “cagar” when lit.

Every family has its own Tió at.

However, there are municipalities in which the Tió is communal and all the people of the town come to the attention to receive gifts, as you can see in the image. Every year children go enthusiastically to make the log defecate!

HELPING TO PRESERVE ANIMAL HEALTH AND REDUCE COSTS Reducing the level of suspended particles in pig installations minimises the risks of infectious diseases. With this aim, Rotecna is increasing its range of products by presenting a full line of covers for its weaning, fattening and maternity hoppers.

The use of covers also helps to conserve the organoleptic characteristics of the feed, while avoiding food losses by preventing the access of insects, birds and rodents.

IMPROVING AIR QUALITY Air quality is characterised by its content of harmful gases, dust and microorganisms, which are directly responsible for both the proliferation of bacteria, endotoxins, fungi and viruses, and the susceptibility of animals to fall ill by irritating their respiratory system.

Preserving the health and welfare of animals is directly related to the technical and economic sciences. The greater the capacity to maintain health we have, the more immunity pigs will enjoy. The fewer the potential pathogens on farms, the fewer the diseases that will spread on farms.

TECHNOLOGY PATENTED

FEEDING BALL THE ‘AD LIBITUM’ DISPENSER FOR PIGS IN FARROWING AND POST WEANING

Seeking the continuous improvement that characterises us, ROTECNA is launching a new version of the successful Feeding Ball, with a renewed system for the adjustment and disassembly of the internal mechanism to ease handling for the farmer.

FAST AND SECURE ADJUSTMENT The big difference compared with the previous design of the Feeding Ball is the substitution of the current system of threaded adjustment handle with a new one that only requires pressing a button to regulate the dosage, making it much faster and safer.

EASY DISASSEMBLY The Rotecna Feeding Ball can be dismantled with one hand from the bottom, without the need to empty or previously disassemble the upper hopper. In addition, in the new design the adjustment handle can be extracted to allow full disassembly of the dispenser’s internal mechanism once it has been removed from the support. The handle can be placed on the same support to avoid losing it while handling the mechanism.

NEW GENERATION DOSITRONIC OPTIMISATION OF THE CONNECTION SYSTEM AND IMPROVEMENT IN THE USABILITY OF THE SOFTWARE. used from the first generation of Dositronic to the present. All this means simpler installation and facilitates the connection between the devices and their accessories with the Dositronic accessories, and the electrical links between the device and the sensor on the feeder, which also improves the accuracy of the Dositronic dispenser.

With the spirit of continuous improvement that characterises Rotecna, we are launching a new version of our successful Dositronic, the electronic system for integral control of feeding for farrowing sows.

This dosing system, combined with its management programme, allows the feeding parameters of the sows to be identified and controlled in-situ quickly and intuitively through the control panel.

This increases the consumption of feed and water, stimulates the production of milk from the sow and improves productivity. Our R+D+i department has simplified the assembly of this product, eliminating some of the elements of the installation system and changing the type of connections

Likewise, the new pin system increases safety, since it avoids leakage problems in the connections inside the farrowing sheds, where the use of high-pressure cleaning systems is very frequent and intense. This way, its proper working, precision and reliability are guaranteed, as well as a long product life.

At the same time, Rotecna is launching a new version (3.0) of its Dositronic user software, in which the control panels have been simplified and the usability improved, with the aim of creating an even simpler, more practical and more intuitive system.

THE KEYS TO COMBATING AFRICAN SWINE FEVER AN SPANISH OUTLOOK African swine fever (ASF) is the biggest concern for the livestock sector. Although there are still no registered cases in Spain, experts believe that this disease could reach farms through wild boar and piglet imports.

What is African Swine Fever?

It is a highly contagious viral haemorrhagic disease that affects domestic pigs and wild boar, but is not transmitted to humans so it is not a threat to the health of the population, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). This disorder can generate very serious financial losses and cause very high mortality rates. It is characterised by the sudden appearance of high fever in pigs, loss of appetite, haemorrhages and, very often, death.

This pathology, also known as ASF, arrived in Europe on September 13th, when it was detected in Belgium. To date, the disease is present in nine European Union countries, in which the virus affects wildlife and there is the possibility of the contagion of domestic pigs. According to OIE data and maps, there are currently some 6,000 active outbreaks around the world.

The ASF outbreaks in Belgium confirmed the presence of 161 boars on November 11th. From September 9th to October 31st, 2018 about 120 dead or slaughtered boars were reported in which the virus has been confirmed in an area very close to the border with France and Luxembourg.

The sector on maximum alert After raising the alarm about the need to control ASF, several technical conferences were held where the action that should be undertaken urgently to avoid the entry of the virus into Spain was analysed. One of these events took place at the headquarters of the Official College of Veterinarians of Lleida (COVLL) on November 6th, with the participation of the Animal Health Research Center (IRTA-CReSA) and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

One of the main ideas discussed, and which all the speakers agreed on, was the need for ongoing training of veterinary professionals, as well as updated data on the disease with a twin objective: to increase the prevention and biosecurity of farms and, secondly, to favour rapid diagnosis in case of infection.

The introduction of the day was given by Dr. Fernando Rodríguez, director of the Animal Health Research Center-CReSA. “When you put a face and eyes on a virus you realize that it is not imaginary, that it has a structure and that it explains many things to you. This is important so people to become aware of biosecurity, which is not nonsense and is based on real data.” In addition, Rodríguez emphasised the qualities of the CReSA and the resources of the centre against AFS.

The second speech was by Dr. Lliliane Ganges, lead researcher into classical swine fever (CSF) in the CReSA, who highlighted the importance of knowing the routes of transmission of the virus and its high environmental resistance. “All objects or installations on the farms can be contaminated with a high virus load. That is why it is important to ensure correct bio-disinfection and use biosecurity measures. The transmission path from wild boar is now a high risk”, he argued.

He emphasised the time needed to diagnose the disease, which should be as brief as possible. “In a simulation of a clinical case of swine fever we carried out during the studies in the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) with the Association of Porcine Veterinarians of Catalonia (AVPC) of 2014, we discovered that the time needed to confirm the diagnosis is 26 days”, he said.

In addition, the researcher described the incubation period of the virus, which ranges from 3 to 21 days, depending on the virulence of the strain, the transmission route and host factors. The elimination (shedding of the virus) begins before the first symptoms appear, coinciding with the incubation period. In acute forms, the presence of the virus in tissues and blood is very high, and the viremia phase (presence of virus in the blood) continues during convalescence. There are four clinical forms: hyperacute, acute, subacute and chronic. In the hyperacute and acute forms, the symptoms are high fever, reddening of the skin, decreased appetite, lack of coordination in mobility, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Prepared to deal with an outbreak

Regarding viral transmission, the direct path is from infected to healthy animals, usually through the oronasal route, although Dr. Ganges pointed out that other paths are also possible, such as the cutaneous, through scratches and abrasions of the skin (applicable in both the African and classical swine fevers).

“From the College of Veterinarians of Lleida we want to keep people up to date and with the necessary knowledge to detect new diseases of African swine fever, so we organise many sessions for prevention and early detection of clinical pathologies,” said Carmen López, president of the group.

Transmission through the intramuscular, subcutaneous or intravenous paths is produced by the bite of ticks carrying ASF. The indirect way is through the clothing of the farm operators, vehicles or biological factors. “African swine fever will be detected by passive surveillance, because it will be the veterinarians who inform the administrations of its existence. But we must not be alarmed; I am an optimist, I do not have the impression that the

Finally, with the aim of having control of all facilities related to the swine sector, Enric Vial, another researcher at the centre, wanted to disclose the Support Service to Slaughterhouses of Catalonia (SESC), whose objective is to provide diagnostic support to the actions of the official slaughterhouse veterinarians in their responsibility for the fate of animals and meat after carrying out the ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections, according to their training and experience, the approved procedures and the legal regulations.

Finally, she stated that “the most important thing is to raise awareness among professionals in the pig sector to favour the quickest diagnosis in case of infection. We are ready”.

THE LIVESTOCK FARMERS, ESSENTIAL FOR PREVENTING ASF The threat of ASF is currently one of the problems that most concerns farmers. The arrival of this pathology would have devastating consequences for the pig sector. Taking into account the preventative measures presented, we spoke to Jaume Bernis, head of the pig sector in the JARC, the young farmers and ranchers association in Catalonia, to know more about their posture.

What risk is there of Spain suffering outbreaks of ASF? The risk is getting closer. We are importing almost one and a half million pigs, of which 3,500 enter Catalonia and are a means of transmission.

What protocol should the farms comply with if a focus is declared?

First, do an analysis. If it is positive, all the animals on the farm and in installations within a radius of one kilometre must be slaughtered. In addition, analyses must be carried out on farms within a 3-kilometre radius. These are the measures that were applied in 2002 when ASF was detected here.

What proposals does JARC have?

level. The second, control of transport: this would let you know if the vehicle meets the standards of documentation, cleaning and disinfection. We would also have a record of the origin and destination of the animals, as well as their state of health.

Another proposal was to make hunters aware of the importance of not touching a dead boar. The first step is always to notify the rural agents.

As for farmers, it is important for them to monitor the movements to and from their farms. We also ask the administration to take care of the service areas of the roads, where the transporters stop to rest. Extreme caution must be taken so that these people do not bring food back from other countries and prevent the meat from transmitting ASF. On the other hand, we request a budget to carry out these controls and more money for prevention.

The last proposal, and we think a very important one, is to achieve a balance between the pigs we

produce and those we import. We have an overproduction of 174%, which is almost two million. Importers and integrating farms must think about what is at stake.

What would the entry of ASF into Spain mean?

Exports would be suspended automatically.

1,200,000 tons of pork are exported from Spain, as it is the world’s third most important exporter, with a value of €5,000 million in 2017. There are slaughterhouses 90% of whose work is for export.

Therefore, ASF would suppose a terrible economic loss, and a collapse of the market would take place, because the value of the meat would fall. This would imply a decrease in the jobs that depend on the sector, which is currently between 15% and 18% of GDP. Farmers must be more aware of these consequences than anyone and start acting, because if we want to raise awareness in the country we have to start with ourselves.

IN DYNAMIC GROWTH The country’s pig population has increased over the last ten years, although it fell by 15% in 2017.

The increase in the production of pork meat in Ecuador is motivated by the implementation of technology in the processes and the demystification of the properties of the meat.

in the Sierra and Costa regions, which account for 79% of the registered farms and 95% of the pig population. In 2007, technified production was 43,500 tons/year. In 2013, this same indicator reached 74,908 tons/year.

PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION The backyard production of pigs in Ecuador is over 30,000 tons per year. The latest farm census in 2017 showed that the swine population of Ecuador was 1,115,473. Estimated pork consumption in 2010 was 7.3 kg/person/year. By 2016, this had increased to 10 kg/person/year.

DEMAND In Ecuador 1.8 million head of pigs were recorded in 2011, 22.9% more than in 2010, according to the results of the latest Survey of Surface and Continuous Agricultural Production (ESPAC) by the National Institute of Statistics and Census.

CFS ERADICATION PROJECT In Ecuador, the Project for the Eradication of Classical Swine Fever, CFS, one of the most feared diseases, is being developed. The main target is to declare the country free of CFS and so increase production and internal productivity.

It also aims to open the possibility of exporting pork to other countries. This project includes a vaccination programme followed by a mobilisation and control.
